a letter from the associate

editor

Hello there...

It’s the season for summer to kick-off — the season we’ve all been waiting for. Annual events like The Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival in Foley and Shindig in the Sand at Flora-Bama make June an exciting time here on the Coast. June draws in thousands of beach goers who plan their vacations around the summer season to get in a little family time, relaxation and of course, a tan. The condos are at full capacity, the nightlife is at its peak and the beaches are busier than ever. I’ll see you there in my beach chair!

hree days of music, sun and fun don't come close to summing up the Flora-Bama's Second Annual Shindig on the Sand Beach Concert at the Flora-Bama. More than 50 musical acts and 200 musicians will set up on the Flora-Bama stages for a weekend sure to get the summer started off right. Sponsored by the Perdido Key Chamber, the event will celebrate the Flora-Bama's 50th Anniversary. Last of the “Great American Roadhouses,” the FloraBama partners with American Family Care each year

to provide the Gulf musicians access to affordable healthcare and other social services. The effort is called Flora-Bama's Gulf Coast Musicians' Assistance Fund (GCMAF). “Last year, they put together an effort to raise money for Gulf Coast musicians who don't have health care,” Jenifer SurfaceIvey, marketing director of the Flora-Bama, said. “We partnered with American Family Care, which is an urgent care hospital/ walk-in clinic. There are plenty of them around the Gulf Coast and they have donated $100,000 over the last 20 years to our Gulf Coast musicians.” The Flora-Bama does its part in raising money for the cause. “Each year, we set aside $5,000 of FloraBama's own money to go toward Gulf Coast musicians,” Surface-Ivey said. “We hope every Gulf Coast musician, if they need a

hether children are ready to cool off with underwater basket weaving, dig elbows deep into clay sculpting, play with poetry or paint a masterpiece, there’s something for everyone at the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach’s Summer Art Camp. “Find Your Flair,” the camp’s theme, is meant as an opportunity for budding artists to test out a broad range of art mediums and fall in love with one or more kinds of creative expression. The camp will provide expert instruction in a summer fun atmosphere. Students will attend classes in visual arts, poetry, pottery, drama, art in nature and recycled art each day, along with biweekly dance classes and glass-blowing demonstrations. Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014

It was a beautiful summer morning when we left Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and getting a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissatisfied with the last few attempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideration our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on time to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beautiful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a little chicken after the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, after that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condition her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep conditioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of motion, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer

gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the conditioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condition our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all times our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. After we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and conditioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-the-counter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. After shampooing and before conditioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, putting any conditioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. After she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bottle. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

June 2014

It’s hard to imagine that it’s June already. I was afraid the cool air and hard rain would last all summer. Now that the weather is in a normal pattern, the fishing should also change to the normal patterns. This month, if you work at it, you should be able to limit on specks, red fish and a lot of times, flounder.

Specks

Specks are going to feed when the tides move the water and move the bait. It’s often better speck fishing when the tides are during the neap patterns. This also makes it easier to anchor your boat near the inshore gas rigs, inshore reefs and sand bars/ oyster bars/drop offs located all over Mobile Bay. I almost always use live shrimp on kahle hooks under slip corks. Cast up-current with your depth set around two feet off the bottom, and let the cork drift very close to the structure. If you don’t get a bite, reel in and cast again with only a slight change in the spot you cast to. When you get a bite, set your hook, but remember the spot you cast to. Try to make as little noise as possible, and never drop or slam the hatch covers on your boat. Trout spook easily.

Flounder

If you have some bull minnows on board, you can fish the bottom on the down-current side of the structure for flounder. Flounder lay on the bottom and ambush their lunch. If you’ve hooked a flounder, be sure to use your net when he gets to the boat, and try to never net the tail first. Go for the head first because the flounder can flip hard if spooked by your net hitting its tail. If they flip away hard, the teeth will cut your line, and away he goes. It’ll break your heart if he was a doormat size flounder.

White Trout

While you’re around these rigs, reefs and other structures, you may catch a fish thats looks a lot like a speck, but has no spots on it. This would be a white trout. He’s related to a speck — just not as big and without specks. White trout are still a great fish to fry and are fun to catch. Some trout grow to 18 inches and give a good fight. Cut bait and cut up gulp baits work well.

Sheepshead and Red fish

During the summer around the rigs, you may also

catch a sheepshead. Sheepshead are great eating fish that fight like pit bulls. Some call sheepshead a bay snapper. Red fish will also hang around the same areas. Red fish are my target fish almost every the time. They fight hard and eat great; not to mention around here they grow to around 50 pounds. The best way to catch the big ones is on the sand bar at the mouth of Mobile Bay on the east side. Fish on falling tides using at least 30-pound set and 2-ounce slip sinker with a 5/0 to 7/0 kahle hook baited with a live 4 to 6-inch corker or live pogies around the same size. Drift out of the pass on the east side, and you’ll drift over the sand bar. Have your bait on the bottom and hold on. If there are other boats drifting just watch their rod tips.

Newspaper Fish

During the summer months, you may also catch kings, spanish, black drum and a cobia or two. Most likely, the best fish in the bay are a triple tail, also known as the newspaper fish. People used to spread newspaper over the water on the up-wind side and follow it as the paper drifted across the bay. These fish seek floating structures at the surface, hang around under it and feed on the bait. These days, I think floating newspaper might result in a conflict with the Marine Police. Therefore, it’s cheaper to fish with anything you find floating on the bay, as well as crab traps, float markers, channel markers or anything else you find standing in the water. Use some stout equipment, as they guys can put up a serious fight and will wrap you around anything they can to slip the hook. There have been some changes to the size and creel limits, so be sure to get a marine resource chart that has calenders and tide charts. The charts also explain any and all requirements and limits. It’s better to be sure about the law and it’s also nice to be polite to other boaters and fishermen while on the water. Stay safe and enjoy your time on the water. Call if I can help or answer any questions. Call me anytime, 251-550-5418. Life is good and so is the fishing,

Capt. Mark asks,

‘Who’s on the Island?’

If you worked for an airline and had the opportunity to fly and live anywhere in the country or the world, where would you choose to live? Bill McGarry and his wife Sharon chose Gulf Shores. Bill was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on May 20, 1943. Bill went to school at Grove City College and majored in economics. After graduating college, Bill tried to enlist. The Vietnam War was going on, and he wanted to help. Even though he was an athlete, he flunked the physical because of an asthmatic condition. At that time, Atlantic Richfield was looking to employ, and he went to work for them in sales. He stayed with them for about a year and a half. From there he took a job with Allegany Airlines, starting in Philadelphia and working as a district sales manager. His job was to call on big commercial accounts, travel agents, groups and charters. He also handled public relations and civic affairs pertaining to the airlines. The company changed it’s name from Allegany to U.S. AIR in 1979, and in 1996 it was changed to U.S. Airways. Bill traveled constantly. He had a large territory and was in charge of several stations. He opened several stations, handling the marketing. When opening a station Bill saw that it was done right. While living in Nashville, Bill met Sharon, a school teacher living in his apartment complex, and they eventually married. They’ve now been married for 35 years. Bill retired after working for U. S. Airways for more than 30 years, and after a short time of not working, he got a job at the airport in Nashville with Southwest Airlines. He worked for them for another 10 years. In 2010, he called it quits and took a second retirement. Bill’s sister-in-law had bought a condo in the ‘80s in Phoenix 3, and Bill and his wife and children visited often. They loved the area, and when an opportunity presented itself, he bought a condo at Phoenix 7 even before the construction started. Bill bought with the intention of eventually retiring here, and his dream started heading in that direction about four years ago. They were spending so much time down here that about two years ago, he sold his Nashville home and came south to be part of the local establishment. At that time he bought two more condos for investment purposes, and when not rented, his extended family comes to visit and has a nice place to stay. The McGarrys absolutely love it here. Bill and Sharon volunteer at the Christian Service Center in Gulf Shores. Sharon is active with the DAR and the Gulf Shores Women’s Club. They feel good about helping others. When the snowbirds are here, Bill leads a water aerobics class at the pool in his condo. He’s a natural born motivational leader that people seek out and want to follow. Bill and Sharon love to sail and own a 35-foot Catalina sailboat. They’re members of the Point Yacht Club at Pirates Cove, where Bill serves on the board. Sailing is one of his passions, but then again, he has so many. He

loves to cook and claims to have a gumbo that will rival any Cajun variety. He challenges anyone from Louisiana to make it MARK any better. When possible, Bill plays golf, and al- ROBINSON though he is not a scratch golfer, he says he can keep up with a better-than-average challenger. Bill also enjoys reading and has read every Tom Clancy book published.

Bill McGarry They also love to travel, and one of the hard earned perks of working for the airlines is to be afforded the opportunity to fly anywhere in the world at discounted fares. They’ve been all over Europe, to Alaska, Canada, New Zealand and Mexico. Bill is a wonderful gentleman, and it was a pleasure to meet him and his family. I feel like I’ve made a new friend, and I feel that we all are fortunate to have the McGarrys ON THE ISLAND.

Q&A with Robby Takac, bassist for Goo Goo Dolls By Destiny Brown Robby Takac, bass player and longtime member of Goo Goo Dolls, offers some insight on the band's accomplishments, current plans and its first performance at The Wharf. The punk rock band is scheduled to perform with Daughtry and The Plain White T's on Saturday, June 21.

Q: A:

What’s the band currently working on?

We just finished an acoustic tour in the northeast. We had an opening band for the show with a couple of violins, mandolins, percussion and vocalists that would come out and join us during the show. We just finished that and then we start the production for the summer tour with Daughtry and the Plain White T’s that will be going on until November.

Q: A:

What are some other bands Goo Goo Dolls has toured with?

The Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi, Motorhead, The Replacements, Matchbox 20, Sugar Ray, Third Eye Blind, the list goes on and on and on.

Q: A:

What are some of the band’s accomplishments?

We’ve done so much. We’ve played at the Olympics, on an air craft carrier in the Persian Gulf and on the top of a volcano in Spain. We’ve done a lot of stuff over the years for sure.

Q: A:

Is this your first time playing with Daughtry and The Plain White T's?

We have had some shows with him in the past. For ESPN I believe it was. Daughtry seems like a really nice guy and we talked about him joining up with us this summer and those conversations led to this tour. We played with Plain White T's not too long ago in Golden Gate Park.

Q: A:

What kind of show can the audience expect?

A few new songs. There's a few songs that we're not going to get out alive without playing. It'll be a big rock show, man, and we've got a lot of plays on the radio and excited to bring it back this summer.

Q: A:

Is this your first time to the Gulf Coast?

It's our first time at that venue (the Wharf). I think we're playing at a place that's a little special and will give off a great vibe.

Cait’s Tater Salad Compliments of Hog Wild BBQ in Gulf Shores Ingredients n 4 pounds red potatoes n 2 cups mayonnaise n 1 cup sweet relish n 6 boiled eggs n 2 teaspoons salt n 1 teaspoon pepper n 1/2 cup mustard Preparation Cut potatoes and boil until tender. Boil eggs at a rolling boil for 10 minutes, cover and set aside. Combine mayonnaise, mustard, relish, salt, pepper and sliced eggs into a bowl. Drain potatoes and cool potatoes and add to mixture. Cool in the refrigerator if desired, and serve.

MEET THE CHEF Caitlin Glosson Glosson is a Gulf Shores native. She attended the University of Alabama, where she studied nursing and worked at Moe’s Original BBQ. There, she realized the restaurant business was her true calling. Glosson and co-owner T.J. Allen knew they wanted to open their own restaurant, but just didn’t know what. “Hog Wild was a huge blessing that fell into our hands, and we were able to create some amazing homemade barbecue,” Glosson said. “Potato salad is one of our favorite sides and is a classic addition to barbecue.” Glosson’s potato salad is a mixture of family recipes made into her own.
