ust as Beachin’ rolls in waves and basks in rays of Alabama’s Gulf Coast, the areas of Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan inspire each issue with unique events, mouth-watering seafood and Southern dishes, apparel to suit beach bums and country clubbers. Jessica Jones This guide to the Gulf Coast offers insight into local restaurants, nightlife, attractions and events that will ensure time well spent on Pleasure Island. First and foremost, the humid subtropical climate and white-sand beaches provide an oasis for guests. Don flip-flops and Hawaiian shirts or just a bathing suit. Spend hours of tranquility against a crashingocean wave backdrop with a good book, umbrella drink, or a completely blank slate. Dig toes into grains of sand, collect sea mementos or build sandcastles with the kids. Take a refreshing dip or dive into water adventures like parasailing, jet skiing or surfing. The area also offers family fun outings like the zoo, miniature golf, arcades, go carts, outlet, surf shop and boutique shopping. Whether you’re looking for a new cover-up or an evening gown, Pleasure Island’s got you covered. Souvenirs range from shot glasses to seashells — go ahead, make your friends jealous. Or let your inner child out to play with a day filled of bumper boats, foam machines, Tiki huts and waterfalls. Or perhaps Pleasure Island provides playtime for you and your sweetheart. Golf the gorgeous shores of the Gulf of Mexico with lush greens, a golf cart and two cold glasses of sweet tea or head for some relaxation built for two with a trip to the spa for couples massages. Maybe a tandem bicycle ride by the beach or late night stroll on the boardwalk is more your style. Perhaps fine dining and dancing... nothing says “I love you” like cracking crab legs and whisking away for a salty-sea waltz. Or, why not have it all? Rock out to beach-side concerts, get inspired at the Orange Beach Festival of Art, dig in at the Island’s annual Shrimp Festival and jump for moon pies with Mardi Gras goers. Whatever your taste, leave the itinerary at home and let Beachin’ be your guide to Southern hospitality, sandy feet and memories that leave you craving your next opportunity to Beach-it.

Gulf Shores announces Fourth Other holiday activities include: at The Wharf are not allowed to touch the of July fireworks celebration nJulyFourth 4-6, 5-11 p.m. runners, but if they gather By Blake Phelps The City of Gulf Shores will celebrate the 4th of July with a stunning fireworks display, beginning at 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 4. The show will be shot from the Gulf Shores Public Beach and will feature a variety of specialty shell fireworks. “We couldn’t be happier about the opportunity to bring the fireworks show back to our public beach,” said programs and events manager Brigette Reynolds. “This is where the 4th of July fireworks show originally started in Gulf Shores and we look forward to continuing that tradition into the future.” According to organizers, the actual location of the

shoot will be near the water, due south of the West Second Street beach access point leaving the main public beach area as an ideal location for spectators. “The main public beach area will provide spectators with an incredible, front row seat,” Reynolds said. “There will be an appropriate safety perimeter setup around the location of the shoot, but we encourage everyone to come down to the main public beach area to view the show.” In addition to the fireworks, Sunny 105.7 FM will be broadcasting a patriotic musical element that will coincide with the show. For more information, contact the Special Events Division at 251-968-1172 or visit gulfshoresal.gov.

Updates on the bread and butter of jellyfish stings By J. Nolan White n Treatments for jellyfish stings are shrouded in myth. For example, current studies show that baking soda, meat tenderizer and urine are ineffective in treating jellyfish stings. If stung by a jellyfish, first rinse the affected area with hot, fresh water to denature the venom (rinse with sea water if hot water isn’t available).

n

Use a sharp-edged object to scrape over the affected area to remove any lodged stinging cells. Diane Reilly, blogger at gulfshoresfamilyguide.com, says to also treat the area with lidocaine (a local anesthetic) to inactivate any remaining cells. Vinegar may worsen the pain associated with most jellyfish stings. “If stung over a large area of your body, seek medical attention,” she adds.

Free The Wharf, Orange Beach Enjoy two days of fireworks, the Spectra light and sound spectacular and a concert. The Family Fun Zone will be open from 5 to 11 p.m. with a patrioticthemed light show at 8:30 p.m. followed by fireworks (on the 4th and 6th) and the water themed light show at 10 p.m.; July 5 the band Alabama will perform at the Wharf amphitheater starting at 8 p.m. n The Shark Adventure Run / INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATION July 4, 7 a.m. Flora-Bama (17401 Perdido Key Drive) Come and enjoy the adventure race or the 1-mile beach fun run. The Alabama

Deep Sea

Fishing Rodeo 80-year tradition

runs deep By Lindsay Mott

D

id you know that Dauphin Island is home to the largest fishing tournament in the world? The Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo is being held for the 80th year and now attracts more than 3,000 anglers and 75,000 spectators over the threeday weekend. This Captain’s Choice tournament and Southern Kingfish Association sanctioned event will be held July 19 to 21. The rodeo site is 531 Lemoyne Drive in Dauphin Island. Fishing begins at 5 a.m. on Friday with weigh-ins each day and an awards ceremony on Monday at 6 p.m. at the Mobile fairgrounds. The rodeo is a project of the Mobile Jaycees. “In the wake of diminishing recreational fishing opportunities, I issued the 80th executive committee a challenge to find new ways to attract new anglers and present returning anglers with new prospects,” said rodeo President Chris Hankins in a statement on the website. Because of this, the committee came up with divisions for this year’s tournament. The tournament will now include The Crown Royal Big Game Cash Prize Divisions. Anglers competing in the Big Game Jackpot may choose to compete in one or more cash division levels and will only compete with the other boats that have entered that level. The Big Game Cash Prize Division will also include a category for Blue Marlin and Catch and Release Billfish. The tournament also features cash prize divisions in King Mackerel and Speckled Trout. In addition, there will now be a Fairhope Boat Company No Motor category inside the Speckled Trout jackpot where anglers compete from kayaks, jon boats or on foot.

These categories and prize divisions create minitournaments within the main rodeo. Fishermen buy into the divisions after buying tickets. Tickets cost $40 per angler in the open division. Tickets are on sale at Academy Sports & Outdoors, Bay Bank, Jemison's Bait & Tackle, Quints Hardware & Sporting Goods, Tackle This, Shoot That, Southern Bama Bait & Tackle, J&M Tackle, Greer's Food Store, Dauphin Island Marina, Sportsman's Marina and Blue Water Ship Stores. The Speckled Trout Jackpot entry has changed from a perboat to a per-angler format for 2013. The total awards package is valued at more than $400,000 and anchored by two boat motor, and trailer packages. The three-day event features 30 categories with prizes awarded in all categories. One Master Angler is also awarded along with cash prizes for King Mackerel, Speckled Trout and Big Game Jackpots. The Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo continues to be conservation minded. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab will be on site again this year collecting valuable scientific data on numerous species of fish. The rodeo has also donated more than $150,000 to the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of South Alabama and academic scholarships.

Kick-Off Event

This year the rodeo will kick-off with the Roy Martin Young Anglers Tournament, on July 13. This event is open to all children 15 years or younger and is designed to encourage participation of young people in sport fishing and to teach and encourage good sportsmanship. The one-day event features 31 categories with prizes awarded for first, second and third place prizes in all categories. One Master Angler is awarded.

at the

july 5, 8 p.m. Alabama concert heads south By Judy Smith It’s a celebration that’s been 40 years in the making, and Alabama is bringing the party to the Amphitheater at The Wharf in Orange Beach on July 5. In honor of their 40th anniversary of touring, Randy Owen, Teddy Gentry and Jeff Cook have returned to the road after an 11 year break, launching their “Back to the Bowery Tour” in honor of their first major gig 40 years ago. The last time the band hit the road was with their 2003-2004 farewell tour, but the legendary group is happy to be back on the stage. The “Back to the Bowery Tour” is sure to be one of the most epic tours of the year by one of the most celebrated groups in country music. “The tour has been laid back and fun,” Owen told Parade magazine. “It’s a celebration of our lives and our career. At this point, everything is icing on the cake.” Although times are still pretty sweet for one of the most respected bands in

country music, it wasn’t always smooth sailing for the musicians, especially in the beginning, until they happened upon a pretty lucky break. In 1973, the boys from Fort Payne landed a job at the Bowery, a beach bar in Myrtle Beach, S. C., playing for tips. Times were pretty tough for the band, but they quickly learned how to work a crowd — a skill that has benefited them through the years. This is the perfect opportunity to hear all those old favorites and even a few new tunes. Alabama returned to the studio earlier this year to produce their upcoming album, “Alabama and Friends,” featuring two new songs from the legendary group along with tributes from some of the hottest stars in country music as they take on their favorite Alabama songs as a tribute to this pioneering group. With so many hits to choose from, Owen knows that fans might not always hear their favorites, but he is trying to create a different type of atmosphere

for the tour — one in which they might be taking requests from the crowds. “It will be a different approach, maybe a little bit more personal with people than when you’re doing stadiums,” Owen told The Boot. “It will be just a coffee house kind of thing, very different.” As Alabama makes its return to the road, Owen and his band mates are putting the spotlight on the fans and are grateful for this opportunity to dust off those great old songs for fans that have been so faithful through the years. This tour is all about the fans. “I just hope they (the fans) understand how thankful I am to be here and to have these songs to perform,” Owen told The Boot. For Alabama, it was important for them to honor this major anniversary of their first big break in the music industry, and this tour, “Back to the Bowery,” is their chance to do that. The band opened their tour at Myrtle Beach, and the group has been traveling around the country, grateful for

the chance to bring their songs to fans one more time. This is one opportunity that fans of Alabama and country music simply can’t miss. The chance to see the boys from Fort Payne return to their home state to sing their classic hits and some new tunes is priceless. Alabama will hit the stage at the beautiful Amphitheater at The Wharf in Orange Beach at 8 p.m. This promises to be a magical night of great music, memories and fun for both the boys in the band and the fans. Don’t miss out on the chance to hear some sweet “Mountain Music” one more time.

Life’s good and so is the fishin’

I hope June was warm enough for you and bet July proves to be fierce. One good thing: specks love it. July’s hot weather will have specks moving in almost the exact same route every day. Makes it easy to track and load up on speck fillets. Early and late in the day specks will move to shallower water to feed. That makes them suckers for top water fishermen and popping cork guys like myself. Popping corks with croakers or good size summer shrimp are the perfect summer meal for specks. If you like tight lines, no sweat. Try croakers on tight lines and large shrimp on hook, line and small split shot just to sink the bait to the bottom. Fish oyster bars, piers, pilings, ledges and man-made structures in shallow water near shore. During the heat of the day, go to your favorrite inshore gas rig. Use a slip cork and fish near the bottom or tight line to put it on the bottom; it will work great for those 3 pound trout that are thick in Mobile Bay. Also fish the channel markers, range markers and red/ green light markers. Don’t be afraid to ease up to the structure and use your rig hook. Then just fish straight down. Sometimes dropping an anchor can be a real job in the heat. Hooking on may be a little easier for you. Remember that noise will spook trout in a second. Also try all the inshore reefs. There’s a new one in the bay and the rubble should still be stacked up. It is, or will be, a good spot. While you fish these deeper spots you should be able to pick up many white trout. When filleted and skinned, these fish can be real tasty with some good batter and pan fried. You’ll sometimes pick up a few slot red fish around the inshore rigs so be prepared for that fight with your tackle. Flounder may be hanging around the same areas looking to nail themselves a small fish or two. You can also hook some small sharks in Mobile Bay. Black tip are the most common for me, but I have caught

GulfVisitorGuide.com

some small bull sharks that are feeding on the schools of white trout which are always around during the summertime. All sharks bite hands, feet and fingers, so be careful. Also, you have to know how to identify them as a lot of them are not legal to keep. Those that are ok to keep have different size restrictions. Just know the laws. A game and fish law violation can ruin an otherwise good day on the water. If you choose to fish the beach from a boat you can expect to find some ground mullet, also known as whiting. There are great food fish along the Gulf Coast that are fun to catch. Use light tackle and fresh dead shrimp, sand fleas or salted shrimp. Don’t be surprised to hook a pompano or two. Know their size and creel limits as well. It’s another great food fish. Keep a good anchor on board. The surf can sometimes push your boat high up on the beach and then break your boat apart. If the water allows and you try the Dixey Bar on an outgoing tide for bull red fish, then be ready for a really fun day. I used 7.0 kahle hooks with a 2 ounce sinker and live porgies on 30 pound test line with 50 pound or so mono leader. It has always worked well for me, but to each his own. Mixed in with these red fish may be black drum, cobia, kings and jack crevalle. All but the jacks can be eaten. The black drum may have parasites along the back bone, but they can be cut out. Most likely, there will be some small sharks on the bar as well; mostly small ones but you never know. All and all, July is a great month on the water. Watch for storms and always stay ahead of them. Know your rules of the road and know the game and fish laws. Show a little respect for other boaters. Don’t litter and always release the fish you won’t eat. The red fish will float belly up if you don’t revive them. It only takes a minute. Have a great day and I hope you enjoy Alabama waters and fishing. Always call if I can help. Stay safe. I can be reached at 251-550-5418.

Blue Marlin Grand Championship set for July 10-13 By Jessica Jones

W

hen it comes to salt water fishing rodeos, a new day has dawned. In addition to traditional fishing and weighins, the sport has become an event encompassing days full of fun and entertainment. Scott Burt, Blue Marlin Grand Championship tournament director, explained that he and Rocky Jones were inspired to hold the event when they found the perfect setting. “It's probably the best venue I've ever seen,” he said about The Wharf's facilities. “It's probably the best venue to host this new style tournament. It's high energy with lots of social events, parties … it's more

of a festival, a happening.” He said big crowds require lots of room and lots of options during a fourday event. “It takes a big venue with a lot of amenities, places to stay, multiple restaurants, nightclubs, stuff for the kids to do … parking, parking is a big deal,” he offered. “We land helicopters there. The type of people who fish this event are the type of people who might bring a helicopter in. The weigh-in area can accommodate 10,000 people and there's a huge fashion show.” He also said organizers must work in harmony. “Rocky does a large event in the Pensacola area; there's good synergy with the two of us togeth-

er.” Folks can expect the venue to fill up with lots of fun, he said. “It's a different type of event than what you're used to seeing,” he divulged. “In addition to some of the events in last year's premier event, visitors can expect a VIP team owner reception, a Bimini start that will be filmed from helicopters … new, innovative, inspiring things. We do come up with new things that intrigue people.” The website offers extra information like who's entered so far, how few places are left, rules and regulations, plus details of scheduled events. Grill tips By The Electronic Security Association

Enjoy the summer season safely

The long-awaited summer season is here. Kids are out of school, store shelves are lined with grilling supplies and the smell of sunscreen permeates the air. The sunny, warm weather provides ideal conditions for relaxing outdoors with friends and family.

Grill Safely

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), grilling is a major source of home fires during the summer months. Each year, there are nearly 8,300 home fires caused by gas, charcoal or solidfueled grills. To ensure the results of your cookout are delicious, not disastrous, remember these tips:

1.

Only light propane and charcoal grills in a wellventilated outdoor area. All grills produce carbon monoxide, a tasteless and colorless gas that can be lethal when inhaled.

2. 3.

To prevent burns or accidents, keep three feet away from the grill.

Always read your grill’s manual before using. Each grill is different and may have unique operating instructions.

4.

If you smell gas while cooking, immediately move away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not attempt to move the grill. It is likely that there is a gas leak, which can be very dangerous.

5.

If the flame on a propane grill goes out, immediately turn off the grill and the gas, leave the hood open and wait at least 15 minutes before re-lighting it. Propane is heavier than air and it takes longer for the gas to dissipate. An explosion could result if re-ignited too soon.

Hot time for burglars

You aren’t the only one with a jam-packed schedule for the next few months; burglars tend to be busier, too. The FBI reports that during June, July and August, burglaries increase by as much as 16 percent. Many homes are seen as easy targets because homeowners tend to take vacations and spend more time outdoors during the summer season. But you don’t have to be a part of the statistic; here are a few ways to safeguard your valuables whether you’re 1,000 miles away on vacation or just down the street at a pool party.

1.

Keep your whereabouts under wraps. Hold off on posting pictures and updating your status on social networking websites until you get home. Burglars are notorious for trolling these websites in search of information that can lead them to an empty home.

2.tored security system. A recent study

Discourage burglary at home with a moni-

proved that security systems and surveillance equipment are effective deterrents against burglary.

3.

Deny easy access to your home by locking doors and windows anytime you exit your home. Most burglars enter a home through open windows or doors or by forcing them open.

4.

Keep an eye on your home by enlisting help from technology. Enhanced security systems give you the power to set the alarm, lock doors, receive alerts and view live video all from your smart phone.

No matter what’s on your agenda this summer, the safety of your family should always be on the top of your list. With these tips, you can spend quality, worry-free time with your family and friends all summer.

Grapefruit Games 1 Shot vodka 1 Shot citrus flavored vodka 1/4 Ounce ruby red grapefruit juice 1/4 Ounce Sprite Zest of 1/2 grapefruit Place all ingredients in a shaker with 4 to 5 ice cubes. Shake and serve in a martini glass rimmed with a grapefruit zest and sugar mixture.

RED velvet, WHITE icing, and BLUEberry cheesecake Cheesecake 16 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature 23 cup white sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 large eggs 1/3 cup sour cream 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Red Velvet Cake 1 box red velvet cake mix 1 1/4 cups water 1/3 cup vegetable oil

3 large eggs Cooking spray or 2 tablespoons shortening and 2 tablespoons flour 2 tubs cream cheese frosting 1 pint fresh blueberries Cheesecake Preheat oven to 325 degrees and place a large roasting pan on the lower third shelf of the oven. Boil a kettle of water on the stove. Spray a 9-inch spring-form pan with cooking spray or coat with shortening and a layer of flour. Line the bottom with parchment paper. Wrap two layers of foil around the bottom and up the sides of the spring-form pan so that the water bath won’t seep into the pan. Add cream cheese to a large bowl and beat with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Add sugar and salt and blend for 2 minutes, scraping sides of bowl as needed. Add eggs one at a time, blending after each. Mix in sour cream, whipping cream and vanilla and beat until smooth. Pour batter into prepared pan. Set the pan in the roasting pan that’s in the preheated oven. Pour kettle water into roasting pan on all sides of the spring-form pan up to 1 inch up the sides of the pan. Bake for 45 minutes, until cake is set to the touch and doesn’t jiggle. Remove from oven and from roasting pan and let cool on wire rack for at least one hour, then place in freezer for the cake to freeze completely, several hours or overnight. Red Velvet Cake Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and spray two 9-inch round cake pans with cooking spray or coat with shortening and a layer of flour. Prepare the batter according to the box directions and bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Cool on wire rack for 10 minutes, then run knife along edges and invert onto

rack to cool completely. Assembly Once cooled, place one round cake on the cake plate, and place the cheesecake on top of it. You may need to trim the sides of the cheesecake to fit. Place the second round cake on top of the cheesecake. Frost with cream cheese icing; be sure to apply thick layers and wipe between dips into the frosting so that red crumbs don’t appear in the icing. Top the cake with rinsed blueberries. n See the photos below for visual instructions on assembling the cake. Photos by Jessica Jones

RIGHT: These summertime-tinis are great for a hot day. Whether you are a fan of raspberry, left, or grapefruit, right, these fruity cocktails are sure to delight.
