a letter from the associate

editor

Hello there...

With the summer heat upon us, it becomes a mission to find that shade or body of water to cool off. July offers an abundance of water sports such as fly boarding, sailing, water skiing, parasailing and fishing that are sure to help beat the summer heat. The highlight of July, Independence Day, is one of the most popular holidays for vacationing on the Coast. The holiday draws in beach bound patriots from all over. With the outdoor activities at Tacky Jacks, the Peter Frampton and the Doobie Brothers concert at The Wharf and The Blue Marlin Grand Championship, July is one of the most exciting months at the beach. Summer is in full throttle so bring on the fun in the sun!

New extreme water sport makes waves in the Gulf By Destiny Brown Flyboarding is growing to be one of the most popular water sports on the Gulf Coast. Listed in the extreme sport category, flyboarding is similar to wakeboarding. The difference in the two sports is the two jets under a flyboard that can propel you up to 40 feet in the air. The flyboard is connected to a personal watercraft, such as a waverunner, using approximately a 55-foot hose. Power is generated through the host to the jets, and the take-off be-

gins. The lengthy hose allows the user to take a dip into the water or soar straight into the air like a superhero. The flyboarder is total control of their direction. Flyboarding requires some coordination, but most easily adapt within 10 minutes on the board. Prices for the adventure vary depending on the length of your ride.

Dierks Bentley on the lineup at The Wharf • ADMIT ONE

Dierks Bentley has proved his country, bluegrass and all around musical talent through an abundance of projects throughout his superstar career. His latest album, “Riser,” follows the artist's country chart topping reputation. Bentley is currently touring to promote the new album and will make a stop at The Wharf for a performance with up-and-coming Nashville band Brothers Osbourne. Bentley's 2012 album, “Home,” has three consecutive chart-topping hits, marking 10 career No. 1 songs for Bentley. His five previous studio albums have sold more than five million copies, were nominated for 11 Grammys and earned him a spot at the Grand Ole Opry. The “Riser” tour is rumored to be Bentley's most impressive tour yet, with a flashy light show and effects. “Riser” is Bentley's most personal album, and the songs were written in the year following his father's death. “Riser,” the albums title track, was written by Fairhope artist Travis Meadows. Meadows performed at last year's L.A. Songwriters Festival in Fairhope.

Q&A

with Tom Johnston of the Doobie Brothers By Destiny Brown The Doobie Brothers is a legend in the music business. The band has had numerous accomplishments during its career and is still touring across the country. Tom Johnston, lead singer and guitarist of The Doobie Brothers, gives Beachin’ an exclusive interview on the band’s newest collaboration with a variety of country artists, performing with Peter Frampton and more.

Q: A:

When was the last time The Doobie Brothers had a performance in Orange Beach?

We played in Orange Beach with Peter about seven years ago. We’re playing with him again, which is interesting because we haven’t played with Peter Frampton since then. We’re going to be back touring with him this summer and playing at that particular venue with him again.

Q: A:

What’s it like touring with Peter Frampton?

He is a lot of fun to work with. He’s a great guitar player, a great singer and has really got a lot of songs. The crowd loves him. Put us together with him, and you’re covering a wide variety of not only music style only, but songs people have known for years. And that’s a great thing.

Q: A:

What are some of the band’s greatest accomplishments?

I don’t know if there’s one thing that sticks out. The accomplishment is to be playing all of these years and still be able to have full shows that people come to, are excited to be there and know the songs and the band. The fan base is growing exponentially. It’s a big demographic of people our age to teenagers that discovered the band through streaming or downloading or whatever. It’s really cool to have all of these ages represented out there, knowing the songs and really digging the band. It’s a fun thing to do and we love playing for people so it’s a great combination.

Q: A:

What kind of show can fans expect at The Wharf?

I think what makes anybody happy, speaking for artists, is interacting with the crowd. That’s what our band’s about. We love playing live because we love getting the crowd into the songs, getting the crowd into the set and changing the set up so it’s not the same form every time they hear it. Maybe rearrange some of the tunes. And we have the gratification of them singing along and knowing the songs.

Q: A:

What is the band currently working on?

We have a new compilation album we just finished with all of these country artists for Sony. It’s songs that have been out for a while, and it’s really special to have these artists evolve, singing and playing on the tunes. It makes it a really fun project to do. Country artists include Zac Brown, Chris Young, Toby Keith, Brad Paisley, Sara Evans and more, and they all each did a song.

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014

It was a beautiful summer morning when we left Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and getting a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissatisfied with the last few attempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideration our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on time to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beautiful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a little chicken after the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, after that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condition her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep conditioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of motion, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer

gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the conditioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condition our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all times our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. After we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and conditioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-the-counter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. After shampooing and before conditioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, putting any conditioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. After she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bottle. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

Anthony’s Salon is on the beach road in Orange Beach; their phone number is 251-974-1514. Please say we sent you!

Beachin’

July is a great month along Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Here are some species of fish and tips for fishing at this time of year.

Specks

Specks are all over Mobile Bay. All of the inshore reefs will be holding specks early mornings before the traffic picks up. I try to never drop my hook on these reefs. I’ve lost too many to ignore that lesson. I often tie off up current on one of the pilings around the reef and let some line out. Go to where the concrete is stacked the highest. These stacks will hold most of the bait, so try those spots first. If some loud fishermen got there before you, the specks may have been spooked. Give these spots an effort and if you get no bites, move on to some other spots on the reef. I often use live shrimp under popping corks on these reefs. If you can catch some corkers, they will work even better than shrimp. Bait fish make for a clean bite. If plastics are your choice, use them as you would shrimp under the corks. If you feel the need to work the plastics, just remember there are snags on the reefs.

White Trout

Around the outside of the reefs, you may find some white trout. These fish come in a huge schools and are very hungry. I use live or dead shrimp, squid, cut bait and sometimes cut gulp baits. They work very well. The bag limits on white trout allow for one person to keep one ice chest full of fish. If the reefs are void of trout, hit the local oyster bars using the same systems as you did on the reefs. As you move from spot to spot, keep an eye open for gulls diving on bait. That usually means there are fish under the bait pushing them to the surface. If the bars don’t work for them, move to the inshore gas rigs.

Inshore Gas Rigs

GulfVisitorGuide.com

July 2014

Anchor up current so you line up on a pilling or rig support. These gas rigs will hold huge numbers of specks as well as flounder and sheepshead. The rig legs catch logs and such and will create a large tangle around the rig. While you may be able to fish the bottom around the rig, it may work better for you to use

a slip cork, which allows you to set the depth of your bait. Rig fishing require a lot of casting, but the results can be really rewarding for you and your fishing friends.

Bull Red Fish

After you’ve had enough trout fishing, and if the tide is running out, then you might buff up your tackle to around 30-pound test and at least a 5/0 kahle hook and you can catch or buy some pogies. I would move to Alabama’s Dixey Bar. The bull red fish should be on the bar feeding on the pogies as they move off shore. All you need to do is drift your bait on the bottom across the sand bar and hold on. These red fish are real bulls when hooked and will fight to the end. You could hook jacks, kings, sharks, black drum and sometimes cobia. Remember the limits on red fish. If you catch more than your limit of oversized red fish, be sure to revive them before dropping them head first into the water. To revive them, grab the tail end and pump the fish head first up and down in the water forcing the water to wash over their gills. When they start to kick their tail, lift the fish up and drop it head first into the water. This allows the fish to torpedo down deeper in the water and eases the pressure on their body so they can work fresh salt water over their gills on their own. It’s a great time to fish in the bay and the Dixey Bar. Fish are everywhere, and given a little practice and watching other fishermen, you should have some good success on the water. Just remember to know and obey the game and fish laws. The fines can be stiff and will surely ruin a good day on the water. Also be sure to know the rules of the road; watch your wake, have the life jackets needed, have a valid license and keep only what you are allowed to keep. Life is good and so is the fishing. Stay safe, use sun block and call if I can help. 251-550-5418

Capt. Mark asks,

‘Who’s on the Island?’

Born and raised in Alabama, Susan Sizemore is a true southern Lady who is pure class. I had the privilege of meeting her a few years ago at a function of the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber of Commerce and was impressed by her back then. Now that I’ve gotten to know her, I am even more impressed. She’s hard working, dedicated and believes in going out of her way to help others. Susan was born in 1949 in Tuscaloosa. While she was still young, her parents moved the family to Montgomery. Her dad, Otis “Joe” Goodwyn, was a lawyer and served in the legislature for 16 years. So moving to Montgomery just seemed right. As Speaker pro tem of the State Senate, he became lieutenant governor when Lurleen Wallace died. Susan’s mom was the assistant tourism director for the State of Alabama. Since Susan’s parents moved to Montgomery when she was still baby, she went to school there. She then went on to Tuscaloosa to attend the University of Alabama. She double majored in education and human and environmental sciences. She graduated in 1970. Susan was a commercial sewing instructor at a technical vocational school and later taught home economics and human and environmental sciences at Baker High School in Mobile. Her family made several moves before moving to Lake Guntersville, where her three children grew up. While ther,e she tried her hand as a sales agent for a real estate company. Susan then inherited and operated a Rodeway Inn Lodge, finding it both challenging and fun. In 1975, the family purchased property in Orange Beach. She had no trepidations when they finally moved to the island for her husband to start Vision Bank. She could live here full time. As she says, “We finally got it right!” They had purchased a house on Ono Island and lived there until it was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan. After her divorce, Susan needed insurance, so she started looking around for a job. Buddy Skipper, a family friend, told her if she came to work for him at Tacky Jacks she would be eligible for insurance under their group plan. She was hired as the marketing director, and it fit right into her work experience. She was great with people and had good business sense as well. That was six years ago, and Susan still loves what she does. Her job is to work with the public. She does all of Tacky Jacks’ ads for radio, magazines, flyers and newspapers. She goes to businesses, promoting the restaurants with coupons and other promotions, and she represents Tacky Jacks where a rep is needed. “If you want to get something done, find a busy person and ask them to do it.” Apparently, a lot of people have asked Susan to help. She’s involved with the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber as the chairman of the Board of Directors and has served as the vice president of its Membership Council, vice president of Retail and Business Services, Chamber Ambassador and on the Shrimp Festival Committee. Susan is also involved with the American Heart Association and has served as its Art for Heart Event Chairperson and on the Art for Heart Board for the past eight years. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Lighthouse

for Abused Women and Children of Baldwin and Escambia counties, and a volunteer for their Annual Sunset Supper event. She’s been MARK president, vice president, and treasurer of the Ono Island Ladies Club, treasurer, historian, ROBINSON and Emblem of the Sirens of the Sea Mardi Gras Krewe, has served on the board and been the Mardi Gras Queen of the Bon Temps Cabrix Mardi Gras Krewe. She’s a member and former board member of the South Baldwin Newcomers Club. Susan presently serves on the SPR committee of Orange Beach United Methodist Church. Susan has traveled all over the U.S. as well as to England, Greece, Italy, France and places in the Caribbean. A few years ago, she organized and took a trip with 39 other ladies to Spain, Portugal and Morocco. She loves to travel and would love to see more of the United States. At the end of the day, her therapy is her garden. She loves working in her yard and spends much of her precious time at home out puttering around the plants.

Susan Sizemore Her latest adventure was recently when she got to take a ride in a hot air balloon. “What a thrill,” she says. The experience allowed her to put a check next to RIDE IN A HOT AIR BALLOON on her bucket list. Susan is a remarkable lady. What an honor to know her, and what a privilege it is to be able to call her a friend. We ON THE ISLAND are very fortunate that she is here. She is a valued member of the island community.

GCAA Summer Fine Arts Camp promotes youth creativity

“While pottery classes continue to be ‘hands down’ the most popular activity of both past and upcoming fine arts camps, students are also always delightfully surprised to learn just how much fun the world of opera is,” said GCAA performing arts coordinator, Pam Winstead. This year's GCAA Summer Fine Arts Camp, Kaleidoscope, will be no different. Singers from Mobile Opera's CReATING

Singers

Among those singing will be baritone, Andre Chiang, a Manhattan School of Music graduate, who has sang in opera houses across the country. Chiang Chiang has also been the recipient of numerous awards, including Regional Finalist for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the La Grange Symphony Orchestra Young Artists Competition Winner and the Verdi Award winner in the Orpheus Voice Competition. Also singing will be soprano, Tjaden O’Dowd Cox, who made an early debut at Carnegie Hall with the Mobile Singing Children. She later received a bachelor of music from James Madison UniverCox sity and has

Stacey Driskell is the Director of Education and Community Outreach for Mobile Opera. In her role as educator, Mrs. Driskell manages choral programs for schools and produces numerous events for Driskell audience development as well as handling marketing for Mobile Opera. Known to Central Gulf Coast audiences as a popular singer, actor and musician, she has performed in opera and musical theatre throughout the area. Stacey was recently recognized for her community leadership as one of Mobile Bay’s “40 Under 40.” The camp is a partnership between the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance and the First Presbyterian Church of Gulf Shores. The goal of this camp is to give young people a unique glimpse into the world of fine arts by participating in both hands-on classes and viewing several professional performances. The camp encompasses all realms of the fine arts, including several mediums of visual art (pottery, pastels, acrylics and

Offered to those entering second through eighth grade in the fall, students will be able to indicate class preference, but will also be exposed to all of the arts through the performances. Other performers will include Gulf Shores native Basch Jernigan on guitar, Gulf Coast favorite Kayla Dowling, pianist and teacher, nationally acclaimed storyteller, Pat Nease, and more. The Gulf Coast Arts Alliance serves as an umbrella organization for the fine arts in our community. In addition to the Summer Fine Arts Camp, programs and events now include the Art Market, which is held on the first Saturday of almost every month at Meyer Park, the Hettie “Tutta” Memorial Scholarship Program, visual art classes, and more. The Gallery, filled with artwork representing artists from all over our region, has recently opened its doors on East 24th Avenue, across from Acme Oyster House in the new Waterway Village. Both full and partial scholarships are available for the camp; please inquire. For those up for a more challenging water exercise, paddle board yoga is offered in clear Lake Shelby at The Gulf Adventure Center. “The classes are great for beginner and experienced yogis,” said Hanna Radcliff, Glow yoga instructor. “Neither paddle board or yoga experience are necessary.” Bring sunscreen, a swim suit and a towel, and prepare for a morning on the water. “I encourage everyone to try it out,” Radcliff said. “It’s such a unique experience being out on the lake and in nature. It challenges you physically and teaches you to bring a playful aspect to your yoga practice. It also brings you out of your comfort zone if you’ve never been on a board or practiced in a studio.” The instructors are Hanna Radcliff, Brooke Nisbet and Jackie Trimble.
