The Alabama Gulf Coast is the nesting site for several species of endangered and threatened sea turtles. Volunteers with Share the Beach spend countless hours walking the shorelines to rope off nests, remove trash and obstacles and finally clear a path so hatchlings can safely make their way to the sea. April H. Standridge, of Foley, captured this photo last month early one morning of a mother turtle in Gulf Shores. For many people witnessing a turtle leave her nest is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Photo by April H. Standridge

SHARING THE BEACH BY ALLISON MARLOW

Mike Reynolds, director of Share the Beach, points to the center of a sea turtle nest.
Reynolds points out the area where the turtle’s track lead under the beach chair and the mother turtle became trapped. Photos by Allison Marlow
Crazy. Amazing. It’s early morning on Gulf Shores beach and a tourist is repeating those words to himself as he watches two volunteers with Share the Beach rope off what they suspect to be a sea turtle nest buried just below the sand’s surface. The momma turtle’s tracks form a giant y-shape in the sand — one side where she entered, the other where she headed back to sea. The volunteers can easily discern from her tracks where her large shell became trapped against a wooden beach chair and where the turtle struggled to turn because of the obstacle. Luckily, she did turn. She did lay her eggs. She did return safely to the water. What volunteers say is crazier and more amazing than watching these animals in motion is the lengths they have to go to protect them from humans. Volunteers walk the beach each morning during the summer turtle nesting season to look for nests. They often return in the evening to move trash and obstacles. During the day they are called to help rescue turtles that have swallowed plastic floating in the water. The plastic causes the
animals’ digestive tracks to fill with gas leaving them unable to submerge. The plastic can also sit in the turtles’ stomachs, causing them to feel constantly full, skip meals and starve. When the eggs’ incubation time nears its end, the volunteers hold near 24-hour vigils on the sand to make sure the hatchlings’ path to the ocean is clear. The wall of bright white lights that shine down from hotels and businesses confuses the tiny turtles which use the light of the moon to guide them to the water’s edge. Without the volunteers as guides many would end up on the highway. “The whole point for what we do is to help this species survive despite development on the beach,” said Mike Reynolds, Director of Share the Beach. “Come hang out, get a tan, go fishing. But this is also critical habitat for the sea turtle and all your trash, all your equipment has to come off the
beach at nighttime. Our concept is to share this area. “What would be really crazy amazing is if everyone who visited the beach would leave it pristine and dark so the turtles would not bump into anything or get disoriented,” he said. The evening before this nest was found tourists stumbled upon a momma turtle on the beach looking for a place to make her nest. The group of humans harassed the giant animal and it turned around and returned to the sea. Even once the eggs are snugly buried below the sand, they are not safe. Both this year and in 2017, a nest in Orange Beach was dug up by humans searching for eggs. In late July authorities discovered the body of a Kemps Ridley Sea Turtle, an endangered species, washed up on Fort Morgan. It appeared to have been strangled to death by a string attached to a collapsed beach chair.
The whole point for what we do is to help this species survive despite development on the beach ... Our concept is to share this area. — Mike Reynolds, Director of Share the Beach August 2018 ● Beachin’ 13
Three types of sea turtles make their home along the Alabama coast. While loggerhead and green turtles are considered threatened the Kemps Ridley is endangered. Share the Beach has been operating since 2001, not only protecting nests and hatchlings but also keeping track of the number of nests they find. Reynolds said there is not enough data to determine whether the turtle population is growing or falling in this area. “It is still too early to tell which way the trend is going,” he said. “Even this year we are about 100 nests less than last year and 130 less than two years ago.” The drop, he said, is not alarming. “There are cycles within cycles in turtle nesting and we haven’t had enough time doing this to truly understand how each of those cycles rises and falls,” he said. “We are confident that our conservation efforts will prove to be fruitful in the future for our sea turtle population.”
Volunteers dig down to the eggs in a sea turtle nest in Gulf Shores. Photo by Allison Marlow
And their efforts have helped to sway a few hearts and minds too. The city of Gulf Shores now requires all equipment and trash to be removed from the beach in an effort to clear the path for the turtles. By 2022 all the heavy wooden chairs that currently dot the beach will be gone as well, replaced by folding chairs that can be removed each evening.
And when the eggs finally hatch and the tiny turtles head to the waves to take the next dangerous step of their journey, alone, the gathered crowds are there to celebrate and respect. “We explain to the crowd that this is an endangered species and we have to maintain some decorum,” Reynolds said. “They are usually very mindful and appreciative of what we’re doing.”
ALABAMA SEA TURTLES Loggerhead – Threatened Loggerhead sea turtles have large heads and blunt, powerful jaws. The turtle’s carapace and flippers are reddish-brown in color and the plastron is yellow. These nesting neighbors can grow to an average weight of 200 pounds and an average length of three feet. The eggs are eaten by ghost crabs, raccoons, skunks, foxes, and dogs. Hatchlings and young turtles are preyed upon by mammals, sea birds, crabs, and carnivorous fishes such as groupers, snappers and jacks. Sharks are a formidable predator throughout the life cycle of sea turtles, although larger turtles can often avoid a shark attack by presenting the flat side of the plastron or carapace to prevent biting. Total estimated nesting in the U.S. fluctuated between 47,000-90,000 nests annually over the past two decades. REASON FOR CONCERN: There are numerous reasons for concern, including the loss of nesting habitats due to coastal development, nest predation and marine pollution. In addition, hatchlings become disoriented by beachfront lighting, preventing them from reaching the water. Strikes from watercraft is also a cause for concern. Because of their feeding behavior and their habit of wintering in shallow waters, Loggerheads, along with Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtles, are more likely to be caught in large shrimp trawl nets and drown. Today, Turtle Excluder Devices (TED’s) pulled by shrimp boats help reduce mortality from net entanglement by allowing many turtles to escape from the nets. HABITAT: Loggerheads are capable of living in a variety of environments. They can be found hundreds of miles offshore or in inshore areas including bays, lagoons, salt marshes and even creeks. Eighty-eight nesting beaches make up the loggerhead’s terrestrial critical habitat. These includes beaches in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and North Carolina. LIFE SPAN: Thirty to 50 years or more. 14 Beachin’ ● August 2018
Kemps Ridley – Endangered Female turtles lay the majority of their eggs on beaches along the east coast of Mexico. It is the only known major nesting beach in the world for this turtle. Females nest in large groups called “arribazones.” Groups of females move onto the beach to lay their eggs over a period of a few days. Each turtle digs a hole in the sand, deposits her eggs and returns to the sea. In 50 to 55 days, the eggs hatch and the baby turtles (hatchlings) rush to the water and out to sea. After at least 10 years at sea, adult females return to nest at the same beach where they hatched. Male turtles never leave the water. They appear in waters near the nesting beach during the breeding season to mate with the females. In 1985, there were only 702 nests reported. However, that number has risen significantly. In 2011, 20,570 nests were reported in Mexico and 199 nests were recorded in the U.S., primarily in Texas. Scientists think baby sea turtles may remember or “imprint” on the particular smell, chemical make-up, or magnetic location of the beach where they hatched. REASON FOR CONCERN: Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles are endangered primarily because of human activities, including harvesting of adults and eggs, as well as incidental capture in commercial fishing operations. HABITAT: Adults inhabit nearshore and inshore waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico that contain muddy of sandy bottoms where prey is found. However, hatchlings and small juveniles swim to the open ocean where they drift with floating Sargassum seaweed. This can last up to two years, or until the turtles reach a carapace length of approximately eight inches. LIFE SPAN: Individuals surviving to adulthood may live 30 years and possibly up to 50 years.
Green Turtle - Threatened While adult green sea turtles have a smooth, keelless carapace with dark mottling, hatchlings have a black carapace, white plastron and white margins on the shells and limbs. Green sea turtles have a worldwide distribution, primarily in tropical and subtropical waters, including the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. During the day, Green sea turtles feed in the sea grass beds that grow in shallow waters. At night, they sleep on the shallow bottom and sometimes out of the water on rocky ledges. Although sea turtles are subject to predation throughout their life cycle, predation is particularly high during the first two years of life. The eggs are eaten by raccoons, skunks, opossums, mongooses, coatis and dogs. Hatchlings and young turtles are preyed upon by mammals, sea birds, crabs and carnivorous fish. Sharks are a formidable predator throughout the life cycle of the Green Sea Turtle. The color of the hatchlings, black above and white below, is probably an adaptation to life near the surface in the open ocean, making them less conspicuous to fish and bird predators. It is estimated that 5,000 females nested in 2010 in Florida. In 2005, more than 10,000 females are estimated to have nested on beaches lining the Indian Ocean resulting in approximately 44,000 nests. REASON FOR CONCERN: The meat and eggs of the Green Sea Turtle have long been a source of food for people. Although international trade of wild Green Sea Turtles is against the law, capturing turtles for local consumption still persists in many central Pacific Islands, Southeast Asia and Indonesia, Indian Ocean islands, east coasts of Africa and Arabian peninsula, in Central and South America, and in Mexico. Exploitation of the nesting grounds either by human interference or pollution poses the greatest threat to these turtles. In the past, Green Sea Turtles were often killed in large shrimp trawl nets. Today, Turtle Excluder Devices (TED’s) pulled by shrimp boats help reduce mortality from net entanglement. HABITAT: Green Sea Turtles feed in shallow water areas with abundant sea grasses or algae. The turtles migrate from nesting areas to feeding grounds, which are sometimes several thousand miles away. LIFE SPAN: At least 30 years and up to 50 years or more.

Turtles on the shore and on parade through Gulf Shores BY ALLISON MARLOW In 15 years, experts say more than 50,000 tiny sea turtles have hatched along Alabama’s coastlines and made their way to the sea. Hundreds of volunteers have spent countless early mornings on the sand helping to monitor and protect them as they made the journey. Visitors come from hundreds of miles away to see their story unfold. The public art project, Turtle Tracks, pays homage to the turtles, their human protectors and local artists. The program began in 2015, cosponsored by the city of Gulf Shores, Gulf Coast Arts Alliance and Coastal
Alabama Business Chamber. Organizers wanted to support environmental conservation and give local artists a chance to shine. Now, seven fiberglass loggerhead turtles dot the city, each crafted by Mardi Gras float builder Kern Studios in New Orleans. Local businesses sponsor and pay for a turtle, and in turn, choose the artist and the design. Several local artists have submitted designs that they can choose from, or the company can choose their own artist. Current turtle designs feature mosaic like shells, painted tropical
flowers and even a beach scene of hatchlings making their way to the sea. Organizers hope that visitors and locals alike will take the time to follow the turtle trail and find each turtle. The goal is to erect one turtle a year, and Turtle Tracks is always looking for new businesses to sponsor a turtle.

Et cetera!! LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION! BY MARY MESSER The new home is built. Selections of the furniture accomplished. Now it’s time for the Et cetera!! Usually we find some items in the same locations we’ve found your furniture, such as lamps, rugs, decor items, but, oh! How I love to shop for unique items created by local artists. This month we will focus on area locations where we can find such items and in the following months I’ll Messer break out with some interesting individual stories.
Fairhope A drive through Fairhope brings the realization that Trip Advisor would be the best source to check off the list of local art distributors ... hmmmm we need more than a day to visit all of them!
Point Clear: The Garage Bill Harrison’s art used to be the main theme at this location. Jean Marie along with other artists’ creations are displayed there now. The store front is deceiving as an amazing amount of other design items are available.
Foley: The Foley Art Center Local artists and craftsmen display fine artwork and other hand crafted items to be sold on consignment. The funds created from sales enable the Foley Art Center to serve the Gulf Coast area with Cultural Enrichment Programs. We must watch for the featured artist of the month! 28 Beachin’ ● August 2018
Foley: Big Fish Trading Company One of the most interesting showrooms in the area embraces a variety of Coastal Designs. Along with paintings and other handcrafted art by locals, Jason and Amy’s design creations take our breath away as we browse through room after room.
Gulf Shores: Gulf Coast Arts Alliance Gallery The GCAA Gallery displays More than 50 local and regional artists, so versatile design is easily accomplished. The Gallery gift shop contains unique hand crafted items. Extended browse time is a must!
Gulf Shores: Tino’s Fine Art and Frames Located in the Gulf Pine Shopping Center, Rick’s gallery exhibits art by himself and other award winning local artists. He is a self-taught artist who draws inspiration from the surrounding area. His works are created on canvas, paper, board or glass, primarily with watercolor, gouache or acrylic. He also provides custom picture framing on location.
Orange Beach: The Prosperous Pelican A visit with owner Nancy Wright is the most enchanting thing about visiting her gallery - quite the Southern Belle. You just kinda feel like she may hand you a glass of mint julep to sip on while you shop. Her display of works of art in all mediums, including local and regional pottery, reveal her unique embracement of the arts. You will probably leave with a lovely piece of one-of-kind jewelry you can’t resist!

T ’ N O D E H T FEED S N A C PELI ARLOW BY ALLISON M
Pelicans are smart. Real smart. They know the fishermen will fillet their fish and throw the unwanted guts back into the water. They know others will leave their bait buckets open and unprotected. They will dive in to take both. When one pelican sees his pelican friends hanging out at the pier eating an easy dinner, he will join in too. Soon, there’s a whole flock of birds living the easy life on the pier. That life of ease can lead to injury and even death. “When they are fed by people they are no longer afraid of humans or really anything so when a fisherman reels in a catch they will try to take that too,” said Kelly Reetz, Gulf State Park naturalist. The birds play a nautical version of fetch that can easily cause them to become entangled in fishing line. Reetz said birds become ensnared in lines or have hooks embedded in their flesh several times a week during the summer. The problem comes to a fever pitch in August when pelican chicks are learning to fish. 32 Beachin’ ● August 2018
“It’s a lot easier for them to take bait off of a person than to catch a fish on their own,” Reetz said. “At some point the parents will stop feeding them and then they don’t know how to fish on their own if they’ve been eating off
the pier.” According to pelicanlife.org, less than 30 percent of brown pelican hatchlings survive beyond the first year. While pelicans have been known to live up to 19 years, the

average age is 10. Reetz said young pelicans that never learn how to search and catch fish underwater as the light bends the image beneath the waves, will live a life of hunger. “They will beg non-stop for food from people,” she said. Do-gooder humans are only fueling the problem. “If I’m a pelican and I see my best friend being fed, I’m going to want some of that because that’s a lot easier than getting food on my own,” Reetz said. “It just gets more and more of them trying to beg on the pier.” Fish cleaning stations cause problems too. Reetz said the pelicans try to eat the bones and skins the fishermen throw away. The bones, now no longer coated with meat will
tear the bird’s stomachs or become lodged in their throats. If they do swallow it, now they are full but have received no nutrition. “If I have a peanut butter and jelly
WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND AN INJURED PELICAN: Orange Beach Wildlife Management Program says, Coastal Resources staff answer all complaints or calls for service regarding wildlife with the supplemental assistance of our public safety departments. All calls about wildlife issues should be directed to our dispatch office non-emergency line 251-981-9777. A dispatcher will take your information and contact the appropriate staff. Please understand that working with wildlife requires appropriate training, equipment and permission. We have a limited number of trained and equipped staff so occasionally response after hours or on weekends can be delayed. Our staff will always make every effort to contact you by phone shortly after the issue is reported to collect more information and inform you of any possible action we plan to take. When it comes to wildlife there are times when the best course of action is no action at all. 34 Beachin’ ● August 2018
sandwich and peel all the crust off and give it to you, you will be filling your belly but not getting protein. You’re going to get weaker and weaker even though you’re filling your belly,” she said. “It’s the same for the pelicans. They are eating a lot but not getting any nutrients.” Staff members at the Orange Beach Wildlife Center care for the pelicans that are injured. Melissa Vinson, Coastal Programs Coordinator, said about half of the birds can be quickly tended to on site and released into the wild. However, for many, the lines and hook cause infection and swelling. Often they are unable to fly and hunt and have grown weak by the time the staff finds them. Those birds are brought back to the Wildlife Center to be rehabilitated through nutritional and physical therapy. Many can eventually be released back into the wild. For a few, the damage is so severe the only option is to euthanize the animal. Vinson said the city urges people to fish responsibly: cover bait and catches, don’t live lines or hooks out and don’t dump unused bait into the water. “A lot of people might think since they didn’t use the bait the might as well give it to the birds. That’s a nice thought but that actually does a lot of damage,” Vinson said. “The pelicans make the same association. This area is for free hand outs.”

Crazy Sista Cooking with Lucy Buffett
Red Snapper Veracruz If you follow the coastline of the Gulf of Mexico from South Padre Island in Texas south, you will find yourself in the port city of Veracruz. The region is renowned for its cuisine, especially its sensational seafood. This recipe has migrated across the Gulf of Mexico from its original roots and found Buffett its way into the Southern repertoire. It celebrates the beautiful red snapper, although you can use any variety of white flaky fish. I love to make it for a small dinner party using tomatoes from my garden. It’s an easy baked dish using only one pan, and it is light and healthy while still boasting the beautiful flavor of Mexican fresco cuisine. Serves 6-8 4 red snapper fillets, 6 to 8 ounces each 1 teaspoon sea salt ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil 2 yellow onions, cut into ¼-inch-thick slices 6 garlic cloves, sliced 1 teaspoon finely chopped seeded jalapeño 4 ripe tomatoes, peeled and chopped, or 1 (28-ounce) can whole tomatoes, drained and coarsely chopped 1 teaspoon orange zest ¼ cup fresh orange juice 2 bay leaves ¼ cup sliced pitted Spanish olives ¼ cup sliced pitted Kalamata olives 3 tablespoons capers, drained 40 Beachin’ ● August 2018
3 tablespoons golden raisins 1 teaspoon dried oregano ¼ cup white wine ¼ cup finely chopped fresh parsley 2 lemons, cut into wedges, for garnish 1. Preheat the oven to 425°F. 2. Season the fillets with ½ teaspoon of the salt and ¼ teaspoon of the pepper. Set aside. 3. In a large heavy skillet (10 to 12 inches), heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté for 5 minutes, or until it is translucent and soft. 4. Add the garlic and jalapeño. Cook for 2 minutes. 5. Add the tomatoes, orange zest, orange juice, bay leaves, olives, capers, raisins, oregano, the remaining ½ teaspoon salt, and the remaining ¼ teaspoon pepper. Cover and cook for 10 minutes. Remove and discard the bay leaves. 6. Add the wine and cook for 5 minutes more, or until the onion is soft. 7. Ladle a cup of the sauce into the bottom of a 9 x 13inch baking dish. Place the fish fillets in the dish on top of the sauce. Ladle the remaining sauce over the fish. Sprinkle with the parsley and bake for 15 minutes. 8. Remove from the oven and serve immediately. Garnish with the lemon wedges.

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014
It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets 44 Beachin’ ● August 2018
very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.
Well worth a visit!
