Hello there. It’s back to school for some, but it’s prime vacation time for others. The beach starts to calm down in August, which makes it a great time to visit if you’re not into two-hour dinner waits and long, LONG traffic lines. August is a great time to be at the beach and there is still so much to do. Events like the inaugural Reel Hope fishing classic at the Orange Beach Marina, Sandstock at Flora Bama, the Alabama Shakes and Drive by Truckers concert at the Wharf and many more, keep the beach entertaining for the remainder of the summer. Get healthy in August with the harvest of the season. A variety of fruits and vegetables are just right this time of year, and there are places at the beach to get them. Most of all, be sure to enjoy the sunshine, but don’t forget the sunscreen. I’ll see you there in my beach chair,

S

ummer is a great time to get, or stay, healthy. With all of the seasonal harvests, the many activities available during the summertime and of course, the sunshine, it’s hard to stay on the couch this season. Make the most of your summer by keeping a few tips in mind on how to treat your body right during the hottest time of the year.

Enjoy the harvest of the season! Fresh veggies and fresh fruits.

The USDA list informs us that cherries, okra, peppers, apples, peaches, beets, kiwi fruit and many more delicious fruits and veggies reach their peak during the summer months. They're also stocked with vitamins and nutrients your body will thank you for. Add more color to your meals by taking advantage of the local farmers markets and produce stands in the area. There are also a few beachside stores and snack bars that offer healthy, seasonal options. Blonde Johns in Gulf Shores now offers Soul Bowlz, a healthy blend of different acai berries, granolas, fruits and other specialty ingredients. Owners John and Lori McElroy found the idea for Soul Bowlz when they noticed them on every corner in California. “I was eating them every morning for breakfast and my husband suggested we take the idea back to Alabama,” Lori said. “We learned how to make them and he built me a little spot in the shop.” All kinds of people are enjoying the different varieties of Soul Bowlz. From beach service employees to yogis revitalizing themselves after a workout. “It's almost a meal replacement,” Lori said. “Refreshing, but not filling for all the people that are going to

be out in the heat.” Anything can be added to any bowl and Blonde John's now offers peanut butter for those wanting to add an extra kick of protein. The store buys local so nothing is processed. The “super fruit” acai berry is a great source of natural energy that will send your energy levels through the roof. For more information, visit Blonde Johns in Gulf Shores, check out BlondeJohns.com or tag your soul bowl on Instagram @soulbowlz.

Get active outdoors

Paddle board yoga is a unique way to work out while also enjoying the beach.

Take a paddle board out on the still waters in the bay, or if you're ready for more of a challenge — the workout sensation, Cross Fit, now has gym locations on both sides of the beach. Another popular workout that has set up camp all over the Island is yoga. Take a calming class on the beach or a heated class to sweat it out. There are also

yoga classes that focus on a more “gentle” approach for more timid yogis. Paddle board yoga is another popular workout expanding at the beach. Paddle boards and kayaks are a great way to work the arms and core muscles. Luckily, the beach has many options for all kinds of boat goers. If you’re more of a runner, don't miss out on all of the awesome road races in the area. Sign up for the 5K you've always wanted to train for and set new goals for yourself.

Have fun in the sun! But safely.

Sunshine and summertime go hand in hand. Though sunlight is loaded with Vitamin D, be sure to take a few precautions before basking all day in the summer rays. Sunscreen is definitely a summer necessity. Sunscreen can range from tanning oil to SPF 100 or higher, and going higher isn’t a bad thing. It’s proven more and more that the sun’s rays have harsh effects on your skin such as premature aging, a higher risk of developing cancer and much more. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the U.S. According to the American Cancer Society, about 3.5 million cases of basal and squamous cell carcinoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and account for the vast majority of cases. Medical Clinic with Infirmary Health, offers some insight on preventing and treating sun damage. “We are in the most intense months of sun exposure because the sun’s rays have the shortest path through the atmosphere during summer,” VanDerwood said. “The single most VanDerwood important step is don’t overdo it. Do not wait until you begin to turn red to stop your sun exposure. When you start to turn pink, you are already burned!” Sun exposure is radiation exposure, which many people do not realize. “As with any type of radiation exposure, the damage continues beyond the period of exposure,” VanDerwood said. “Remember that the sun’s radiation can be ‘trapped’ under a cloud cover and bounce back and forth between the clouds and a white beach to amplify the exposure.” One way to avoid radiation exposure is, of course, sunscreen. “Make sure you use a sunscreen with a high SPF rating,” VanDerwood warns. “Use over SPF 50 if your skin is fair or not yet condtioned to the sun. Reapply sunscreen after swimming or if perspiring. Understand that once you have started to turn ‘pink,’ additional sunscreen can not afford you any further protection!” If you do get sunburned, Dr. VanDerwood has a few tips on how to treat the pain. “All the usual, intuitive things such as cool showers followed by application of a good quality emollient (skin moisturizer) or any product with aloe will help,” VanDerwood said. “If you have intense pain with swelling and bright red skin, this is sun poisoning. Sun poisoning is a form of radiation sickness. You might be nauseated and even have an elevated temperature and need to see a doctor.” Though sunscreen is a very important summer necessity, Dr. VanDerwood mentions a few other precautions

to take for a safe summer. “Remember that not taking safety measures will not make you cool, and it can be fatal,” VanDerwood said. • If you are boating; wear your life preserver. • Be aware of the environment, and see what is in the water before you get in. • Look for hazards in the water when parasailing or using a jet ski, and avoid the temptation to use excessive speed. Even water is pretty hard at 40 mph. • If you work outdoors, be aware we are at peak season for heat related illness including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. • Make sure that you balance water and salt intake — remember, you must replace what you lose — when you perspire, you are losing salt and water. A good rule of thumb is one bottle of an electrolyte solution like Gatorade for every two bottles of water. • Remember that snakes like to curl up in shady flower beds, especially in the evening when you are likely to be working there. Wasps and hornets are active this time of year — so look for their nests before you open gates or move furniture. You will have a lot more fun if you can avoid these common warm weather hazards.

Beach flag safety

It’s a safe idea to be aware of the water conditions before going for a swim. One of the most common tragedies at the beach is people not paying attention to the flag warnings before diving head first into the ocean. Ray Dougherty, creator of a @beachsafetyflag on Twitter and BeachSafetyFlags.com, became aware of this tragedy two years ago after hearing of four local drownings during a two-day period due to rip currents. Dougherty, who was running the Gulf Coast Newspaper website at the time, began to post more updates on water conditions. “It really struck me that so many beach visitors just didn’t pay attention,” Dougherty said. “We need to do everything we can do to create and raise awareness.” Creating his website was Dougherty’s ultimate contribution to help out the problem on the beach. He also suggested warning flags be used on all of the beaches, not just along public beaches. “Resorts, condo complexes and even private beach houses fly safety flags too, coordinated with the flag status posted by local safety officials,” he said. “We’ve been beta testing some vinyl flags, less susceptible to fray, tear and fading. I put a couple of those in the hands of Melvin Shepard, the beach safety chief at Orange Beach,” Dougherty said. ocal musician and philanthropist, Melissa Joiner, is continuously looking for ways to support her community. Raised on the Gulf Coast, Joiner developed relationships with the community from an early age and learned to help in any way she could. Other than playing her music at a plenty of Gulf Coast venues, Joiner also teaches the kids choir program at the John Snook Foundation in Foley. In 2014, Joiner co-founded the Gulf Coast Songwriter Shootout with fellow music lover, Nick Biebricher. The event not only became the largest songwriting competition on the Gulf Coast, it also taught Joiner how to create a successful event that would be appreciated by her community. “I love the shootout and what it did for songwriters,” Joiner said. “But I still wanted to do something more for the community.” Joiner’s most recent endeavor is creating the 2015 Songs That Save concert series. Twelve of the area's most talented female musicians will put on a concert to benefit the Penelope House of Mobile. The mission of Penelope House is to provide safety, protection and support to the victims of Domestic Violence and their children through the provision shelter, advocacy and individual and community education. The concert series will be held at the Listening Room in Mobile on August 14 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and space is limited. Only 50 tickets will be sold before the show. Advanced tickets can be purchased at The Listening Room or from Melissa Joiner. There is a $10 ticket fee at the door, but no guarantee there will be seats available. on fishin’ with Phil Dortch It’s often the little things that get us into trouble. Not paying attention to details or thinking a problem isn’t that urgent and you’ll fix it later. In this article, I want to briefly mention little things that can cause aggravation or even get us in life-or-death situations. Whether from neglect or being totally unaware of the problem, many of the things I will mention are from personal experience or things learned from others.

Boat maintenance

I purchased my Sea Hunt from a friend who had just had it serviced. On my first trip out on Thanksgiving Day with all the family, I made it about 100 yards from the dock when the engine quit as if it was out of fuel. I knew the tank was full, but I couldn’t pump the bulb to get gas to the carbs. It was a new boat on its first trip out, and I called a friend to tow me back to the dock. When the engine was serviced, a new fuel filter was installed and the little gasket did not properly seal thus making it impossible to pump fuel. Same boat a little later, I got water in the gas. Long story short, I had a bad gas cap which let water in every time it rained. Be sure to check your gas caps every few outings. Recently my GPS quit working. After trouble shooting with technical people, I ordered $300 worth of antenna parts, but it still didn’t work. I finally found a blown fuse, which only cost $1 to replace. Another little thing not to forget is to put in the drain plug before launching your boat. I recently had a second automatic bilge pump installed for a backup in case my main one quit. I recently noticed lots of water pumping out when I tripped the main bilge pump switch. I discovered the automatic one I was taking for granted to be working, had quit. False sense of security could have sunk my boat. Be sure to check and double check everything before launching.

Trailer maintenance

Keep your boat trailer wheel hubs greased. Wheel bearings going out on the way to an anticipated fishing trip can ruin your day. Occasionally, loosen and grease the lug nuts in case you have a flat. Lugs are just little things, but if you can’t get them off due to rust it becomes a big thing. If your tailor lights don’t work and you’re getting home after dark, it’s probably just a little corrosion due to salt water. It may seem like just a little thing, but it could land you a ticket or worse, cause an accident. Have you ever pulled your boat from home to the launch and realize you forgot to secure to trailer hitch latch? Thank goodness for heavy tongue weight and smooth roads. Just a little mistake.

Medial awareness

Just a little cut from a fish, crab, leader wire or dirty

knife can become seriously infected if untreated due to some bacteria in the water. I always carry a bottle of peroxide and a first aid kit. Always carry a good pair of wire cutters in case someone gets a hook in their hand. Just a little hook, but it still caused pain.

Reel maintenance

Fishing blunders are little things that cause you to lose that trophy fish known as “the one that got away.” A little fray in your line or a bad knot can’t be good when the big one is hooked. It’s just a little thing, but it’s the weak link between you and supper. Hook set is important. I always ask my charter customers if they bass fish. Usually they say ‘yes,’ to which I reply, “forget everything you know.” Saltwater fishing is different especially when using circle hooks. Fluorocarbon line versus mono. Another important thing is sinker size. Too little and your bait may be above the fish. Too much and it may sink completely below the strike zone. Just a little thing, but it often means success or failure. If you forget to wash your reels with fresh water, they may not even turn tomorrow. Also be sure to check the screws in your pole. I had a tiny little screw fall out of my spinning reel making it totally useless. Another little screw once came out of a casting reel and I had to pull line in by hand.

Know what fish are legal

During this past snapper season, a friend caught a nice triggerfish. Upon getting stopped by authorities and proudly showing off his catch, he made one little mistake; he was unaware that triggerfish season was closed. A more than $400 error. In the Bible, the Song of Solomon 2:15 tells us that the little foxes spoil the grapes and in Ecclesiastes 10:1, we read about a fly in the ointment. Just a little thing, but as we have all experienced, “little things” often turn into really big problems. Remember, take a kid fishing, obey the rules and get home safe. Any day on the water is fun and catching fish is always a bonus.

GulfVisitorGuide.com

Vince lights up. One daughter is about to attend the University of South Alabama, the other is successful in marketing and his son, who lives in Oregon, works in a greenhouse supply company. Vince worked for the city of Montgomery for about seven years. During this period of time, Vince who loved scuba diving, opened a dive shop and scuba school. He often brought his students to the Gulf to dive, and saw the need of dive reefs. At one point he met his former partner, Tom, who had his own company. He needed some help, and Vince joined forces and together they had a successful engineering firm. They decided in ’98 to expand. They heard there was a demand at the beach for engineers, and he knew there was nowhere they’d rather live. They answered the call. “Gulfgate Lodge was gone by the time we opened our office. Kerri and I, while dating, would patronize different cultural attractions such as the “Lodge,” Judge Roy Beams and the Flora-Bama. We have always been in love with the area.” They opened an office and ventured out on their own knocking on doors. Over time they became established as a premier civil engineering/surveying firm. They built subdivisions, installed the streets, did the site designs and did whatever necessary to prepare for the construction. Vince enjoys diving, but there were not many dive operations out of this area that would cater to the dive instructor with a boatload of novice divers, unlike the dive operations in Pensacola, Panama City or Destin. One day, Dave Walter and Leonard Kaiser brought to the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber a project of acquiring, and sinking, a ship for a diving and fishing reef (the LuLu project). Vince saw a need for this area, and became involved in, and later chairman of, the reef committee. He knew the Alabama Gulf Coast could offer as much to divers as other Gulf Coast areas. The committee met and over a short period of time, formed the Alabama Gulf Coast Reef & Restoration Foundation and raised money to sink the LuLu. The community got behind the project and it took off. The foundation later decided to set a goal of making three reefs by the year 2015, and this was recently accomplished. The first was the sinking of the Lulu, the second was Poseidon’s Playground and the third and most recent, was the sinking of the Capt. Shirley Brown. Vince wants to build snorkeling reefs off the coast of Orange Beach, Gulf Shores and Dauphin Island if the residents want one there. Poseidon’s Playground is in the Vern Mitten East reef zone that’s located three miles offshore. The state has allowed the foundation to put statues, built by Walter Marine, in one corner of the zone. The statues

are in about 40 feet of water. There are tie in points for boats so they won’t anchor and damage the reefs. There is even a cross underwater which opens the playground up for underwater weddings. The committee has also had requests for memorial reefs, and there are several of them already located in the area. The committee will put out statues, small memorial structures and items with plaques purchased from the foundation. Dave, together with Vince, hope to make the Alabama Gulf Coast a premier diving location. Dave came up with the Lulu project and brought the idea to the chamber. Vince and the committee and lots of community support, made it happen, and Dave did the turn key operation to make it a reality. Most of their projects are for public use. The reefs are custom made and some contain underwater art. Talking about the Lulu, Vince says that David sank it such that it’s sitting on the bottom upright. An impressive sinking viewed by interested people in a couple hundred boats. Vince says on a busy weekend, there can be 50 to a 100 divers on the reefs. The reefs are covered up with fish to see. Fish like amberjack, king mackerel, snapper and grouper can be seen on any good day. Vince said he’d seen a Leatherback sea turtle recently, and some of the charter fishermen have even reported seeing an Orca out in the Gulf. Vince is chairman of the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber and that, along with work, keeps him pretty busy. He was elected to the Orange Beach Water Board, and feels as an engineer, he can be of help to the water system. Vince is a man that enjoys being involved. Vince says he plans to stay until he qualifies to be buried in the Orange Beach cemetery. It’s down behind the old volunteer fire station in the Bear Point area. It’s not well known except to locals. Smiling, Vince said you have to live here for 20 or 30 years to be buried there. Recently Vince repurchased his engineering and surveying company back from the large engineering company he sold his firm to seven years ago and is working on establishing himself locally as a civil engineer and land surveyor of choice. He’s proud of his accomplishments and rightly so. He’s a remarkable individual who’s an asset to the Island. The Island is fortunate to have him as a resident, and I feel fortunate to be able to call him a friend.

Q AND A WITH PATTERSON HOOD OF THE DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS

T

he Drive-By Truckers have made a statement in the music industry with their southern rock sound and lyrics that speak the minds of their fans. Listen to any of the bands songs, and you’ll hear a story. Patterson Hood, American singer, songwriter and co-founder of the band, gives Beachin' an exclusive interview on upcoming tour dates with the Alabama Shakes, the live album the band is about to release and much more. Q: Is this your first time performing at The Wharf in Orange Beach? PH: Yes this is our first time there. We'll be playing with the Alabama Shakes, this will be our fourth show together this tour and it's a great thing to get to play with them. They’re such a killer band and our bands have a lot of history together. It will be a really special concert. Q: What can someone expect the show to be like? PH: Well ... it will be hot as hell, but we're going to raise hell also and have fun. The show will be a pretty good cross section between new and old stuff. We never have a set list and we decide the first song as we’re about to walk up. I think that keeps us on our toes and keeps it exciting and makes for a better show. I'm sure it’ll be a good one, ya know? Q: Have you been writing anything new? PH: I’ve been writing a whole lot. We don't have much time right now to think about our next studio record, but I've been writing a lot of it with a lot of new songs. Q: What's next for the band? PH: Our next record will be the band putting out a live album called “It’s Great To Be Alive!,” which will be released later this year. I think this live record

will be our best one and I'm very proud of that. A lot of bands get their best work at an earlier period of the band and just keep playing songs from their heyday period and I'm glad we've continued to grow. We have a pretty different band than we started and I'm proud of that. Q: What are a few of your biggest accomplishments in your career? PH: Just having a career. Honestly, it’s a hard way to think of living. We managed to to do it for awhile and we've had this band for 18 or 19 years now. We’ve made a living at it and even spent the last 13 or 14 years making a pretty decent living at it. It's great that people still want to come see us.

Foley’s annual rodeo comes to town

I

t’s time to rodeo! The 18th annual Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation Professional Rodeo, sponsored by the South Baldwin Regional Medical Center and Gulf Chrysler Dodge Jeep, will be celebrating its 18th year at the City of Foley Horse Arena. The rodeo is a great time for a great cause, historically attracting more than 9,000 spectators during the course of the three-day event. From bull riding by professional cowboys to bouncy houses in the Kids’ Zone, there’s fun for the whole family. The rodeo also features exciting events including barrel racing, bareback riding, calf roping, team roping, steer wrestling, break away roping and much more. The pre-rodeo festivities include “Hometown Heroes” on Thursday night, a tribute to military and emergency services personnel; “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” on Friday night, a national rodeo movement in support of breast cancer awareness; and “School Spirit” on Saturday night, an opportunity for young and old to support Baldwin County schools by wearing their team colors. There’s fun for the whole family and it’s a great time for a great cause. The JCMF Professional Rodeo is the primary fundraiser for the Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation, a nonprofit organization providing training, funding and support of Peer Helper Programs in 46 schools across Baldwin County.

The JCMF Peer Helper Program model is a certified curriculum based upon teaching communication, coping and problem-solving skills in order to equip students with the knowledge to support their peers through daily issues and life obstacles. These Peer Helper programs empower students to serve as tutors, mentors, mediators and friends to their fellow students, supporting them through academic or personal struggles including preventing bullying, avoiding dropout, leaving destructive relationships, helping new students adjust and much more.

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014

It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair.

Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no overthe-counter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

Anthony’s salon is at 23175 Perdido Beach Boulevard in Orange Beach & their phone number is 251.974.1514. Please say we sent you!
