ust as Beachin’ rolls in waves and basks in rays of Alabama’s Gulf Coast, the areas of Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan inspire each issue with unique events, mouth-watering seafood and Southern dishes, Jessica Jones apparel to suit beach bums and country clubbers. This guide to the Gulf Coast offers insight into local restaurants, nightlife, attractions and events that will ensure time well spent on Pleasure Island. First and foremost, the humid subtropical climate and white-sand beaches provide an oasis for guests. Don flip-flops and Hawaiian shirts or just a bathing suit. Spend hours of tranquility against a crashing-ocean wave backdrop with a good book, umbrella drink, or a completely blank slate. Dig toes into grains of sand, collect sea mementos or build sandcastles with the kids. Take a refreshing dip or dive into water adventures like parasailing, jet skiing or surfing. The area also offers family fun outings like the zoo, miniature golf, arcades, go carts, outlet, surf shop and boutique shopping. Whether you’re looking for a new cover-up or an evening gown, Pleasure Island’s got you covered. Souvenirs range from shot glasses to seashells — go ahead, make your friends jealous. Or let your inner child out to play with a day filled of bumper boats, foam machines, Tiki huts and waterfalls. Or perhaps Pleasure Island provides playtime for you and your sweetheart. Golf the gorgeous shores of the Gulf of Mexico with lush greens, a golf cart and two cold glasses of sweet tea or head for some relaxation built for two with a trip to the spa for couples massages. Maybe a tandem bicycle ride by the beach or late night stroll on the boardwalk is more your style. Perhaps fine dining and dancing...nothing says “I love you” like cracking crab legs and whisking away for a salty-sea waltz. Or, why not have it all? Rock out to beach-side concerts, get inspired at the Orange Beach Festival of Art, dig in at the Island’s annual Shrimp Festival and jump for moon pies with Mardi Gras goers. Whatever your taste, leave the itinerary at home and let Beachin’ be your guide to Southern hospitality, sandy feet and memories that leave you craving your next opportunity to Beach-it.

The limestone discs will attract a wide variety of marine life, including sea turtles and juvenile red snapper.
The decision was made to deploy 6-foot-tall pyramids in the areas. About 240 of the pyramids have been placed in the reef zones by winning bidder David Walter (aka Reefmaker). Blankenship said in the corners of each reef zone additional habitat was deployed. “We placed disc structures with pilings,” he said. “The discs have limestone rocks that are good habitat for juvenile red snapper and smaller fish. This will give them a place to aggregate and have a place for protection as they grow.” Although the reefs have only been out from one to two months, Blankenship said fish were already starting to aggregate around the pyramids. “I’ve already been out to fish the new reefs and there were bait fish around the reefs,” he said. “And I caught some king mackerel trolling above the reefs. We think it’s going to be a great spot for kings, Spanish mackerel and bonita. It will be a good trolling alley, and it will hold red snapper and other reef fish. We also think these will be good locations for sheepshead in the winter and early spring months. These are good size areas with plenty of room to fish.” Blankenship said if the anglers use the near-shore reefs as he expects, Marine Resources will look at other opportunities off Fort Morgan and possibly Dauphin Island. “The problem is we do have a lot more shrimping activity off Fort Morgan, Sand Island and Dauphin Island,” he said. “It could create some user conflict, but we hope to minimize that. “We’re hoping this will be successful and give smaller boats places to fish in the Gulf and diversify our fishery from a red snapper fishery to where we have good trolling alleys for kings and Spanish, species that have longer seasons.” Blankenship said much of the funding for the new
Minton reefs came from the Emergency Disaster Relief Program that the state received after Hurricane Katrina. The project also received contributions from the Orange Beach Fishing Association and the Coastal Conservation Association. Coordinates for the new Minton reefs will be posted on outdooralabama.com soon. Blankenship also said other reef projects are in the works. “We will soon be putting out the first of the 25-foot-tall structures that include a 15-foot pyramid with other structure attached it to it make it 25 feet tall,” he said. “This will be the first 10 of 30 that will be deployed. We’ll put these out in five spots with two pyramids in each. Some spots will get four that are spaced out to try to mimic a large vessel. We’re going to see if that will help to attract more amberjack to try to diversify our reef system for other fish than red snapper.” Speaking of red snapper, Blankenship said the recent red snapper season in June was an obvious success. “The fishing was outstanding,” he said. “The fish were good size, and I enjoyed seeing all the nice fish people were catching. We saw a lot of nice fish on Facebook. I want us to manage that fishery so that people will have more than a month to catch them. It was an awesome month, but it was just too short.” The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council met this week to discuss an expanded red snapper quota because of a recent stock assessment that showed the fishery has improved significantly. “We think we will get somewhere between three and four million pounds,” Blankenship said. “There will be a discussion as to whether we allow fishermen to take the additional quota this year or whether we smooth it out over the next few years so the seasons will be more consistent.”

Foley Art Center offers a variety of classes for children and adults.
Center shapes beginning artists, offers variety of classes By Lindsay Mott Contributing writer
T
he Foley Art Center focuses on giving everyone an opportunity to find the type of art they love and are good at. To help with this, the Center is offering a number of beginner classes this fall. The “Beginning Oils & Acrylics” class is taught by the Center’s director Bonnie Blaylock with two different time slots for the class. She is holding a weekday class on Tuesdays from noon to 2 p.m. beginning Sept. 3 and running through Sept. 24. This class is $80, with a discount for senior citizens and students, and supplies are needed. Blaylock is also offering the class on Monday nights from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for $120 running from Sept. 9 through Sept. 30 for those who work or can’t come during the day. The class starts out with
very basic principles of the art form, showing students how to set up their easel and palette, mix their colors, what surfaces to use and how to prepare them and more. Blaylock said she throws a lot at the students in a short period of time. She said the course can also be a refresher for those wanting to get back into the oil and acrylics medium, but she prefers new artists who have “never picked up a paintbrush and are nervous as a cat.” She likes the chance to teach new habits rather than trying to break bad ones. In the class, she also teaches color, shape and design and students will finish two paintings in the class and be prepared for the intermediate level. Blaylock said the class is fast-paced, but it is also relaxing and light-hearted. “I don’t put a lot of pressure on people,” she said. “A mistake is just something you learn by; if you don’t
make a mistake you don’t learn.” The Foley Art Center also hosts an after school art class for children on Thursdays, starting right after school until 4:15 p.m. These classes are $5 per session. The Center also hosts “live model open studio” days on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon where artists can come in and use whatever medium they'd like for a live model. Thursdays are also open studio time. “Our goal is to bring art to people who have never been able to experience it before,” Blaylock said. “Just come in and try it. You don’t know if you’re going to like it until you try it, so we want you to come in and try this.” The Center schedules new classes year-round and tries to have a class ready for anyone to join at any time. Check foleyartcenter.com for new classes and schedules throughout the year.

Sara Evans to add variety to Pensacola Fair By Judy Smith Contributing writer To help celebrate the 79th anniversary of the Pensacola Interstate Fair, highly acclaimed country superstar Sara Evans will hit the stage, bringing her beautiful voice and heartfelt songs to fairgoers on Oct. 19. The Pensacola Interstate Fair is known for always bringing the best in entertainment, and this year is no exception. “The Fair always tries to secure big names to appear on our stage,” said Don Frenkel, Pensacola Interstate Fair general manager. “To have been able to sign Sara Evans was a tremendous asset and joy. Fun and memories is what the Fair is all about, and we are sure that giving the great people of Pensacola the opportunity to see and enjoy such a great talent as Sara will be a great opportunity for us all.” Known for such hits as “Born to Fly,” “Suds in the Bucket” and “Perfect,” Evans first burst onto the Country music scene in 1997 and soon became a favorite of Country radio. With six records to her name, this Missouri native has always brought a sense of quiet strength and passionate vulnerability to her music. Her first Number One hit, “Born to Fly,” was just the beginning of her chart-topping ways as she saw her next two singles, “I Could Not Ask for More” and “I Keep Looking” break into the Top 10. Evans’ third album, “Born to Fly,” was certified double Platinum and marked Evans’ rocket into superstardom. Evans’ third album debuted at number three on the Top Country Albums chart, but it was her third single, “Suds in the Bucket,” that became her most successful song, reaching Number One status on the Hot Country Songs charts and became a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. It also became Evans’ first single to be certified gold. With the release of her fifth album, “Real Fine Place,” Evans reached number one again with the album’s first cut, “A Real Fine Place to Start.” The album was certified gold and sold 130,000 copies in the first week of its release. In connection with the album’s fourth single release, “You’ll Always Be My Baby,” Evans became an author, cowriting a gift book of the same name. In 2006, Evans received her first ACM
for Top Female Vocalist and opened to sell-out crowds across the country. Although her career was at an all-time high, her personal life took quite a hit in 2007 when she filed for divorce from her husband, Craig Schelske. Taking some time to regroup her personal life and career, Evans came back even “Stronger.” After marrying former University of Alabama quarterback Jay Barker, Evans continued to tour and added two more books to her resume. In 2010, Evans released “Stronger” after a six-year hiatus from the recording studio. The first single, the song of heartbreak with hope on the other side, “A Little Bit Stronger,” rocketed up the charts to Number One and became Evan’s first platinum-certified single. The anthem of survival has become Evans’ most popular single to date, selling close to a half-million digital sales. “‘A Little Bit Stronger’ is definitely something that I can relate to, and everyone else can, too,” Evans was quoted in her biography on her official website saraevans.com. “Time really does heal everything. You come out on the other side, and you always are stronger from it.” Evans said she cannot wait to bring her songs of strength and hope to her adoring fans, and this enchanting songstress will treat the Pensacola fair crowd to all her hits in a magical night of beautiful music that will inspire and uplift. Don’t miss out on your chance to see this awardwinning beauty bring her talents to the Pensacola fair. “Without a doubt, Sara will bring excitement and anticipation to Pensacola and the Fair in particular,” Frenkel
said. “Entertainers like her are very rare and the opportunity to see Sara free, as opposed to having to pay $30 to $40 a ticket, always creates an excitement in us all.” Once again, the Fair is sure to bring lots of fun for everyone, he said. “The Fair celebrates its 79th year this year and has always been the numberone family attraction,” Frenkel said. “It not only offers fun and entertainment for the whole family, but offers the opportunity for young and old alike to exhibit their talents and special treasures that they are proud of and want to share with others. The Pensacola Interstate Fair offers the largest variety of exhibits of any fair (large or small) that we have visited throughout the country.” The fair, which brings 11 fun-filled days to the Pensacola area, will open on Oct. 17 and will run until Oct. 27. More information about the Pensacola Interstate Fair can be found at pensacolafair. com.

‘Who’s on the Island?’
God Bless America, and God bless those men and women that have defended this great nation and kept us safe. One such person is a gentleman I recently met named Whit Johnson; he and his wife, Carol, were eating breakfast at the table beside us.
Family and Early Life
as we did it peacefully. He then went to Washington, D.C. to the Naval District Washington Staff at the WashMARK ington Navy Yard. He was Public Affairs ROBINSON Officer for the Commandant. It was one of his most rewarding assignments. He was involved in processing our POWs returning from Vietnam at Bethesda Naval Hospital. “Privacy was our main concern,” said Whit. “Reuniting with family, individual treatment and attention to their needs was our top priority.” He asked many, “What was it you missed most during those six years in a Vietnam prison?” and was surprised that their universal reply was “color.” Everything was gray in confinement. From Washington, he was sent back to Pensacola, where he was on the staff of the Chief of Naval Education Training. Finally in 1975, he retired. He bought a house on the Island and settled down.
He was born in Hartford, Conn. in 1929 and was brought up in Torrington, Conn. His dad graduated from Cornell University in 1921, and was a residential architect. His older brother lives in Bradenton, Fla. and is a building contractor; his younger sister has passed away. After graduating from high school, Whit spent the next two years at Montana State College, and then two years at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was to receive his degree in architectural design. However, it was a five-year course, and the Korean War was cranking up. Knowing he would be drafted, he enlisted in the Navy. He was accepted to the Naval Cadet aviation program (NAVCAD) and graduLife on the Gulf Coast ated in 1954, receiving a commission On Feb. 13, 1978, he walked into as Ensign USNR. the Mustin Officer’s Club at Penscola Whit Johnson dresses in costume for the Navy base and spotted Carol at the Polar Bear Dip on New Year’s Day. Van Gogh & Vino, the social side of painting By Judy Smith Contributing writer

ooking for something fun to do and maybe connect with old friends or make some new ones? Searching for a fun night out that’s not the same old, same old? No, this isn’t an ad for a new dating site, but this event is guaranteed to be social. The PAA Foley Art Center is proud to announce a very fun party headed your way. On Thursday, Sept. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m., you are cordially invited to the Van Gogh & Vino Painting Party. It’s a little bit of Impressionistic art thrown in with a whole lot of fun. You can tap into your creative side and have a great time with some pretty lively company. For the cover charge of $25 per person, you’ll be furnished with art supplies to create that masterpiece of your own, and you’ll be treated to some pretty tasty hors d’eouvres. It’s B.Y.O. wine, so bring along whatever libations you’d like to compliment the evening. The class is great for beginning painters, those that dabble in the paints, and seasoned professionals. So don’t think that you need talent to join the party. Everyone is invited to come and try their hand at creating their own work of art that’s worthy of Van Gogh status (or pretty close). All participants in the class will get instruction and guidance from some of the most talented art instructors around. Ranging from color mixing, brushstrokes, technique, and a variety of other lessons, these areas will be covered by the teachers as they give plenty of hands-on support and assistance. By the end of the evening, you’re sure to take home a masterpiece of your very own that you can show off to friends and family. The evening will also include lots of fellowship and fun with great company, delicious delectables, fine wine and lots of enjoyment. Plus, you might even walk
away with a door prize. This guarantees to be a charming evening of fun and fellowship that you don’t want to miss. Although you might think your work doesn’t compare to the legendary Dutch Impressionist master, Vincent Van Gogh, don’t let that fear stop you. The talented instructors at the PAA Foley Art Center are there to guide you through this exciting assignment. Helping instruct the essentials of this famous era of art, the staff will help each participant construct a piece of art that is sure to be mistaken as a Van Gogh original. It’s a guarantee that you’ll walk away from the evening with a fabulous piece of art and lots of great memories. Groups are always welcome, and the PAA Foley Art Center’s motto is always “the more the merrier.” Plus, private parties of 10 or more participants can be booked with a group discount. If you’re interested in reserving a date, you can contact the PAA Foley Art Center staff at 251-943-4381. The Van Gogh & Vino painting parties are always lots of fun and are a great and original way to host that bridal shower, baby shower, birthday party, or whatever your social gathering. If you’re looking for a unique bachelorette party, this is a great time for the bride-to-be to share some special time with other members of her wedding party while creating a piece of art that they will cherish forever. These classes are a great way to bond with friends, family and coworkers and are a wonderful way to mark any major (or minor – hey, we love to celebrate everything in our family, from learning to tie your shoes to school graduations) milestone. Plus, you get to take home a memento of this special occasion. So get those creative juices flowing and tap into your Impressionistic side with this very entertaining and exciting event. There’s never a dull moment here. For more information on the classes, you can check out the Foley Art Center website at foleyartcenter.com.
