When your favorite team hits the road for the big game, it's time for you to hit the beach. Whether you're cheering on your favorite team at a sports bar or hosting your own tailgate with friends and family, the beaches on the Alabama Gulf Coast are a FANtastic place for an away game. Fall brings the beginning of football season. It's what some fanatics have waited all year for, and there are many restaurants, beach hangouts and sports bars to catch the game. Come experience game days and tailgating on the Gulf Coast's beaches this football season. So what makes the ultimate game day experience? Is it the tailgating? Is it the fans? Is it the team spirit? Is it the big screen TV's and the cheap beer and wing specials? It's all of the above. If you're looking for the biggest TV's in town to watch the big game, head to Cobb Theatres in Gulf Shores. Showing all Alabama Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers games and big playoff games for FREE while seats last. Treat yourself to concessions, beverages and adult beverages while rooting your team to victory. “We play the games on every game day and open the

auditorium an hour before kick-off,” said Troy McDaniel, regional operations director for Cobb Theatres. “On top of that, we have the largest screens in Gulf Shores.” The Cobb Theatre welcomes all ages to come view the games. “Instead of going to sit at a bar to watch the game, we have the opportunity for the whole family to come view it on the big screen,” McDaniel said. “We've had a great turn out the past couple of years. It's a different event than a movie. You go in and watch the game, the players are bigger than life on the big screen, and all of the great digital presentation paired with great sound.” There are no outside food and beverages allowed in the theatre, but the concessions stands offer a variety of foods, snacks, beverages and beers that will please any fan. “What makes the ultimate game day experience is great seats, a great picture, and the fact that you can relax and enjoy the game in comfort,” McDaniel said. “It's nice to have stadium seating, air conditioning and food and beverages.” The Cobb Theatre is located at Pelican Place in Gulf Shores.

A TASTE OFTailgating by Destiny Brown

10 Beachin’ ● September 2016

If you're hosting your own tailgate, don't forget these tips for the perfect game-day feast. We asked local caterer, Sarah Bradley of Sarah's Homemade in Gulf Shores how to prepare the perfect game day foods that will please any fan! IT'S ALL ABOUT FINGER FOODS... “I think finger foods that aren’t too messy are ideal because people can still feel like they can eat as well as drink and have a good time,” Bradley said. “At a tailgate, people want to socialize, have a few drinks, and celebrate their favorite team.” • Spread out some chicken salad or pimento cheese on croissants. • Black bean corn dip or beer cheese dip. If having a game day tailgate party at home, I love to have some hot dips on hand, such as pepperoni dip or Mississippi Sin dip. People can’t resist a warm cheesy dip on a salty chip. DON'T FORGET THE SWEETS AND DRINKS... “The other must have is something sweet,” Bradley said. • Chocolate chip cookies • Rice Krispy treats • Cupcakes “For drinks, I love to have a themed cocktail devoted to your favorite team,” Bradley said. “You can make the drinks up ahead of time and pack them for the tailgate. It makes it easier to serve and quicker to pour!”

5 Tips from Sarah How to prepare the perfect tailgate

1. Make sure that you have plenty of food. 2. Have many different things to choose from. 3. Finger foods, that aren’t messy are great as well as any dips that can be served with some chips so that people can graze all the food before watching the big game. 4. Food that is easy to serve and eat are great for both host and guest. 5. Keep in mind that people want to socialize and have a good time when they are at a tailgate or football party. Hosting your own game-day party, but would rather enjoy the party than prepare a feast? Let Sarah do it for you! Check out Sarah's Homemade at 208 W. Fort Morgan Road in Gulf Shores.

Fashion GAME DAY GEAR UP FOR

With each fall, comes new fashion. This year seems to be all about comfort. “Graphic T-shits are big right now,” said Candice Duncan of Wildflowers Boutique in Orange Beach. “Game day graphics such as team logos or other sayings and colored jewelry that matches paired with shorts and skinny jeans are very popular this year.” Team baseball caps are also in style this year to pair with graphic T's. Wildflowers plans to be stocked in these distressed fashionable hats. Making a comeback this year are game day dresses coordinated with plenty of team colored accents. “A lot of college girls want solid color dresses and coordinate it with matching jewelry,” said Terri Long, owner of Wildflowers Boutique. “It also seems that long necklaces are replacing scarves this year.” For the out-of-college crowd, Duncan says flowy tops paired with jeggings are popular for game day. As for shoes, “peep toe shoes,” or open toe shoes with a small chunk short heel are all the rage for game day and can add a little dressup to any outfit.

“Long and tall boots are also back in style,” Duncan said. “As for purses, we are seeing a lot of the grey family this year,” Long said. “Purses that are big this year are backpack purses, messenger bags with a small pouch and suede purses,” Duncan added. With these tips from the experts, find out how to keep it fashionable while dressing up in your team colors for game day. “Dressing in your team colors makes it fun and shows what team you're going for and shows everyone who you're supporting,” Duncan said. Wildflowers also has a large display of game day gear from coolers to drink mixes to hot dog warmers and more! “We also take pride in putting out new items every day and changing it up so you can see something different each time you come in!” Long said. Wildflower Boutique is located at 25910 Canal Road Suite M in Orange Beach.

Nothing says fall in the South like game day. Dress in your team colors and dress to impress to show off your team spirit!

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

George O’Neal Fish Prints by George Gyotaku Artist by Destiny Brown

“I feel blessed to be able to take my hobby and make it my livelihood. It’s very special for me to be a part of first-time catches.” “I was introduced to the area by my wife and fell in love. The goal was to eventually come down and not have to drive back” Local artist, George O’Neal has done his share of traveling. The Atlanta native and Vietnam Veteran lived in 23 states and three countries before finding his permanent home in Orange Beach. George and his wife, Marilyn, have been visiting the Alabama Gulf Coast since 1973, when Marilyn said she knew of a good fishing spot where her family vacationed. George doesn’t consider himself an artist. George was at his wife’s art show more than 20 years ago when a fish print on display caught his eye. Being a fisherman himself, George could tell the print came from a real fish and was impressed by a form of art he learned was called Gyotaku. Gyotaku is the ancient Japanese art of fish printing or rubbing. A fish is inked and its image is transferred onto linen or rice paper. George says he

20 Beachin’ ● September 2016

prefers linen because it doesn’t tear as easily. It was originally used as biological study to record the size of a fish. George began his own take on the ancient art form. When he went fishing, he would bring back his catch, ink it and get it ready for display. He was encouraged by his wife to try colors and pastels, which was a success. George was formerly a youth pastor and used to teach his vacation bible school students about Gyotaku. He did more than 200 classes for the Orange Beach Art Association. Currently, O’Neal has set up shop at Zeke’s Marina in Orange Beach. He prints fish off the boats and also takes requests for people who want to bring their own fish in. He’s proud to be called part of the Zeke’s Marina family. Zeke’s Marina is located at 26619 Perdido Beach Blvd in Orange Beach. Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014

It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets 22 Beachin’ ● September 2016

very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

Anthony’s salon is at 23175 Perdido Beach Boulevard in Orange Beach & their phone number is 251.974.1514. Please say we sent you! www.anthonyjonesinc.net

Alligator Alley 30 Beachin’ ● September 2016

If you take a drive to the Cypress swamp in Summerdale, you’ll find Alligator Alley. Alligator Alley is an exciting experience for the whole family and allows real interactions with these kings of the swamp. Let owner, Wesley Moore and his crew teach you all about the gators in the park. Moore has been around alligators all his life and the park property has been in his family since 1939. Opening in 2004, Alligator Alley was designed as a properuse of habitat for these reptiles. The park is currently home to 200 adult alligators and more than 500 alligators total. Most of the gators are imported from Florida. If you wonder how these beasts like to chow (or chomp) down, feeding times are every day at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Moore hand feeds the gators as the crowd watches from a safe distance. Ribs, hams, and other large chunks of meat are fed to the gators as they congregate on the banks of the swamp. If you want to see the gators

up close, participants are given alligator food to tour the 1,800 feet elevated boardwalk that takes you to the center of the swamp “The boardwalk gets people up close and personal in a safe setting,” Moore said. If you’re more of a dare devil, make a stop at the supplemental reptile area. “We have reptiles from all over the world. Tortoises, snakes, lizards, it’s more of an encounter. People can hand feed the tortoises, hold the snakes and more,” Moore said. The number of customers that come through the doors daily is weather dependent. The busiest time of the year for Alligator Alley is June through August and spring and fall break. There are picnic tables on the premises and onlookers are encouraged to bring a picnic to make a day of it! There are refreshments also available in the park. Coolers are welcome, but no alcoholic beverages.

If you’re looking for a little more than sand and sea to take up your vacation time, load up and take a day trip! There are many places for the all ages and the whole family that are just a drive away from the beach and offer new memories that you never even thought of!

on fishin hooked

with Phil Dortch

Fort Morgan, historic civil war fort, built between 1819-1834 is the launch site of a typical fishing trip for me. We first drive past a yellow buoy at the mouth of Mobile Bay where the Ironclad southern boat was sunk when Gen. Farragut shouted, “Damm the torpedoes, full speed ahead.”

Three miles south in the Gulf proudly stands Sand island Lighthouse now on a small rock island. The lighthouse was built in 1871 and offers great fishing along with irresistible photo opportunities. As we cross Dixie Bar, a sand bar running out toward the lighthouse and just east of the ship channel, the water is generally a little rough, but offers great Bull Red fishing especially on an outgoing tide. We travel southeast to what locals call the “Guitar Rig”, one of many Natural Gas rigs in the Gulf. Underground lines actually run all the way from Tampa Florida. The rigs make great habitat for fishing.

We look off into the distance and see a couple of Shrimp boats anchored. They usually shrimp at night and sleep during the day. If you get there early when they are shoving the bycatch overboard, get ready for some real action fighting big Jack Cravelle and Bonita. Fishing does not always involve catching fish, even though that’s the goal. Our beautiful Gulf Coast offers great scenery to enjoy, and catching fish is often a bonus.
