ust as Beachin’ rolls in waves and basks in rays of Alabama’s Gulf Coast, the areas of Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan inspire each issue with unique events, mouth-watering seafood and Southern dishes, Jessica Jones apparel to suit beach bums and country clubbers. This guide to the Gulf Coast offers insight into local restaurants, nightlife, attractions and events that will ensure time well spent on Pleasure Island. First and foremost, the humid subtropical climate and white-sand beaches provide an oasis for guests. Don flip-flops and Hawaiian shirts or just a bathing suit. Spend hours of tranquility against a crashing-ocean wave backdrop with a good book, umbrella drink, or a completely blank slate. Dig toes into grains of sand, collect sea mementos or build sandcastles with the kids. Take a refreshing dip or dive into water adventures like parasailing, jet skiing or surfing. The area also offers family fun outings like the zoo, miniature golf, arcades, go carts, outlet, surf shop and boutique shopping. Whether you’re looking for a new cover-up or an evening gown, Pleasure Island’s got you covered. Souvenirs range from shot glasses to seashells — go ahead, make your friends jealous. Or let your inner child out to play with a day filled of bumper boats, foam machines, Tiki huts and waterfalls. Or perhaps Pleasure Island provides playtime for you and your sweetheart. Golf the gorgeous shores of the Gulf of Mexico with lush greens, a golf cart and two cold glasses of sweet tea or head for some relaxation built for two with a trip to the spa for couples massages. Maybe a tandem bicycle ride by the beach or late night stroll on the boardwalk is more your style. Perhaps fine dining and dancing...nothing says “I love you” like cracking crab legs and whisking away for a salty-sea waltz. Or, why not have it all? Rock out to beach-side concerts, get inspired at the Orange Beach Festival of Art, dig in at the Island’s annual Shrimp Festival and jump for moon pies with Mardi Gras goers. Whatever your taste, leave the itinerary at home and let Beachin’ be your guide to Southern hospitality, sandy feet and memories that leave you craving your next opportunity to Beach-it.

Coral-colored crustaceans to tickle taste buds at annual Shrimp Festival Outdoor Enjoy food, arts and crafts, live music, Idol World, kids’ activities, Shrimp Festival By Jessica Jones “It’s one of the best festivals in the US.” Ed Rodriguez, president of the Alabama Gulf Coast Area Chamber of Commerce might be a bit partial when it comes to the 42nd Annual National Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores, but some would argue, he’s got good reason. “There’s something for everybody,” he began. “If you want to go to a food festival, it’s a food festival; if you want go to an art festival, it’s an art festival; if you want to go to a music festival, you’ve got it. It’s all those things.” The festival is held the second full weekend in October, Oct. 10-13 this year, Thursday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. 5 p.m. It is free to the public and is held in Gulf Shores at the intersection of highways 59 and 182. Parking is first-come, first-served and the shuttle service is recommended. An interdenominational church service will be held on the West Stage on Sunday from 9-10 a.m. The festival typically attracts 250,000 visitors and features 250 vendors. A seafood sampling tent offers free tastes, plus cooking demonstrations, in addition to the festival’s many food vendors. Arts and crafts vendors offer original pieces for one-of-a-kind souvenirs and keepsakes, while the Retail Marketplace holds a plethora of goodies for guests to enjoy.
Official merchandise, including the official 42nd Annual National Shrimp Festival poster by Loran Chavez, can be found at any of the “shrimp-colored” tents throughout the festival. Another aspect of the event is the manpower that goes on behind the scenes, Rodriguez offered. “One amazing thing about this festival is there’s probably 400 to 500 volunteers that go into this festival and 80 to 100 on the committee,” he explained. “Without them, we couldn’t do it with only six of us (staffers) full time.” Guests have many opportunities to enjoy entertainment and activities. Here’s a glance at some of the festivities the Shrimp Festival has to offer:
Children’s Activity Village
The young and young at heart can enjoy a variety of entertainment options at the Children’s Activity Village. The area features arts and crafts, games, music and play areas, all under adult supervision, and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The area has moved slightly north and into the street from last year; it is located at the west edge of the festival.
Live Music
Entertainment is offered on two different stages and runs 12 hours a day on each stage Thursday, Friday and
GulfVisitorGuide.com
Saturday, plus Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. “There will be classic rock, 90s rock, we have country, R&B, a little of everything,” Rodriguez divulged. The East Stage is sponsored by Wind Creek Casino and the West Stage is sponsored by Organized Seafood Association; entertainers include: Everclear, the Adam Holt Band, Lisa Christian, the Tip Tops, Willie Sugarcapps, Ryan Conner, Yankie & the Hellz Yeah, Sugarcane Jane, Dr. Zarr’s Amazing Funk Monster, the Beach Billy’s, Greg Fells, Buring Cypress and Kyle and Karl.
Cooking Demonstrations
Renowned chefs will offer insight into their culinary creativity with cooking demonstrations and sampling at the Zatarain’s Seafood Sampling Tent at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. daily near the West entertainment stage. The Restaurant Challenge winner will be recognized at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday.
10k/5k Run
This officially-sanctioned run has been a part of the Shrimp Festival since 1977. Taking place at Orange Beach Sportsplex, 4385 William Silvers Parkway, the 10k will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday and the 5k will begin at 8:30. Registration information and applications are available at myshrimpfest.com.
Shrimp Festival Idol
According to Rodriguez, this is the first year for Shrimp Festival Idol. High school students throughout all of Baldwin County will compete. Vocal talents will be displayed on the west entertainment stage on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Shawna P. of “The Voice” will emcee the contest. Students and schools will win as selected singers earn cash prizes and scholarships. “There’s a huge focus on having something for all ages,” Rodriguez revealed.
Sand Sculpture Contest
The Sand Sculpture Contest at the Annual National Shrimp Festival will be held on Saturday on the beach at the southwest corner of the Festival grounds at the public beach access. Registration begins on the beach at 11 a.m. and building occurs from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. when the Sand Sculptures are judged by a carefully selected panel of judges. A building team is allowed a maximum of four members. All participants will receive a plastic sand bucket and shovel. The four team categories are: 5-10 years age group; 11-15 years age group; 16 years and up; and Family (All ages). If adults wish to help their child/children, enter the Family category. Prizes will be given for first, second and third places and honorable mention in each category.
Outdoor World
“We added some activities for people who are outdoor enthusiasts — exhibits on hunting and fishing and things you can do outdoors on the Gulf Coast,” Rodriguez said. “It’s brand new this year.” Peruse vendors specializing in outdoor activities and sample the best of what the Gulf has to offer.

The Pink Event marches to a different beat: Zumbathon, activities raise funds for breast cancer
By Lindsay Mott Contributing writer
T
wo local groups have come together to host an event focused on the awareness and prevention of breast cancer while also working to raise a little bit of money for the cause. The Pink Event has much to offer in the way of fun for the whole family and is also for a good cause. Mel Thomas, local fitness instructor, held a “Party in Pink” zumbathon last year alongside her fellow coordinator Sherie Coyne. This year, they wanted to make that event even bigger, so they joined with the Guardians of the Ribbon Lower Alabama Chapter on their annual Pink Heals event, which is in its fourth year, and brought the two together. Zumbathon participants will receive a bag of goodies and do zumba for an hour. But, there is plenty to do for those who are not prepared for zumba. There will be a silent auction, photo booth, entertainment, massag-
es, vendors, refreshments including barbecue plates from the Smokin Hot Tatas barbecue team and more. Local hospitals will provide speakers and health screenings. There will also be a balloon release for survivors. There’s a little something for everyone to enjoy. Another key event for the day will be the fire truck parade. This kicks off at the Wharf and will showcase fire trucks from all around the area, including Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, Mobile, Escambia County and other floats. The parade will end at the recreation center and then the firemen will be available to interact with the children and run the Kid’s Zone at the event. Leading the parade will be the pink fire truck, Cindy, named for a local lieutenant’s wife who passed away from breast cancer, according to Thomas. The fire truck is signed by survivors and is a sight to see. Thomas said that she wanted to do a breast cancer event because some of
her fitness students are breast cancer survivors and she sees them as “heroes.” “We have all been touched by breast cancer,” she said. Some of Thomas’ students continued to exercise through their treatment, and they believe this helped them get through. She’s trying to help spread this message. And, if they raise a little money in the process, they’ll be happy too. According to Thomas, the money the fire department raises will go back into its Pink Heals tour that honors local breast cancer survivors. The money raised by the Zumbathon will go to the Joy to Life Foundation, which she said provides mammograms for those who cannot afford it and builds awareness. All the money stays in Alabama. The Pink event will be held Saturday, Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Orange Beach Recreation Center Complex. Tickets for the zumbathon are $10.

October 2013
I’m glad to see it cool down a little. So far we’ve had lots of rain, but no big storms. October is a really great month on Alabama’s coast for fishing, hunting and just enjoying nature. There will be some kings and cobia as well as spanish around the Dixey Bar this month. There are fewer people on the water, so it should be easier to set up the perfect drift out over the Bar. To me, the best fish on the Bar is the red fish. Some are up to 50 pounds and most of them are around 20 pounds. It’s really basic fishing, too. Get there during an outgoing tide. I use 30-pound test line with a 40-pound leader with a 2-ounce sinker and a 5/0 or 7/0 kahle hook. My baits are pogies, crockers or pin fish. All work well, but the pogie is best. Just cut your motor off before you go past the last red marker, and put your bait on bottom; then just drift. The red fish usually stack up on the sand bar waiting on the bait fish to drift over them. If you have a few friends and a couple of lines in the water, you will often have a double or triple hook up. As you fight these fish you’ll dance the ever famous Dixey Bar Shuffle trying to keep your lines from getting all tangled up. The large red fish can be eaten and are pretty good when grilled on the half shell. If you can do without them, it’s always a good idea to release them, being sure to revive them first. The limit is one per person and remember, you cannot have red fish on board if you go into federal waters (three miles off shore except for the bulge south of the light house). Be sure to know your position. If smaller fish are your target, Mobile Bay has a number of fish to pick from. One real good eating fish that will be on fire in October is flounder. They move off shore this month and most often follow the shore line from the Delta south to the Gulf. The best bait is bull minnows, but shrimp or gulp baits work well. Just bounce them on the bottom near any structure you can find, including piers, oyster bars, sand bars, sea walls and even boat ramps. I use 15-pound mono with a Carolina rig using 1/4-ounce and 40-pound test braided line for a leader with a 2/0 or 4/0 kahle hook. Set the hook pretty hard and keep all slack out of the line. If you have a flounder, try to net it head first. If you touch the tail with the net, their strong attempt to swim away combined with their very sharp teeth may end the fight real quick. Remember that the size limit is 12
GulfVisitorGuide.com
inches and the bag limit is 10 fish. October also will have some really large schools of white trout off shore under the close-in rigs. Squid, salted shrimp, or cut bait will work fine, as will gulp bait cut in two pieces. White trout schools can be really large, and it’s easy to pull 100 of these guys in. They do eat well, but it takes a choir to clean 100 fish after being on the water all day. Best to keep only what you can eat tomorrow. Leave the rest for the next trip. Specks start to move as soon as the water cools just a little. The specks will tend to stack up near the mouths of all the creeks and rivers that flow into Mobile Bay. Live shrimp, plastics or hard lures work great. My go-to rig is a slip cork with a 1/4-ounce slip sinker so as to fish at any depth. Pop the corks as often as you can. The size limit is 14 inches and the creel limit is 10. Always check the limits before you hit the water. A game and fish citation can cost a chunk of change and will ruin a good day of fishing. Plus, you don’t get to keep the fish. No win. October is also a good time to ease up to the delta and try to locate some hogs on the bank. In the lower Delta (below Interstate 65) you can use any weapon legal at that time of the year to shoot hogs. Hog season is when anything else is in season. All this means is that Oct. 1, squirrels are in season and you can use a shotgun with small shot or a rim fire rifle, but in the lower Delta, you can shoot hogs with your deer rifle as well. I hunt from a boat. I also use a single shot 45-70. The reason is simple — the banks are way too muddy, so I float in my boat, which is legal if the boat is not under power. If your trolling motor or gas motor is in operation, you not only can’t fire your weapon; it’s not even legal to have it loaded. Thus, the reason to use a single shot — easy and quiet to load or unload. Again, check with the local game and fish wardens to be certain you’re not breaking the law. I was once told that to get the absolute truth about game and fish laws, always ask the people with the blue lights and the game and fish ticket book. They are the enforcement folks and they do know their jobs. All and all, October is a great month around here for hunting or fishing. Hope you enjoy this month as much as I will. Always know the law and stay safe. Feel free to call me at 251550-5418.

Golf Gulf Shores' Fab Five:
1.
Go Fish: Winter is perfect for Bull Redfish and charters will continue daily in Gulf Shores. Jump on an early-morning charter and be on the links by afternoon.
Five activities to combine with your golf trip to Gulf Shores this winter By Steve Donahue The arrival of winter doesn't mean golfers in northern climates must stow their equipment until spring. In fact, golfers are encouraged to escape Nor’easters and lakeeffect snow with a snowbird vacation to Gulf Shores — a 32-mile stretch of Gulf Coast beach that offers mild, offseason temperatures. Rates starting as low as $70 per golfer, per night (based on a group of four) for room and golf on any of nine golf courses and stays in a wealth of condos and hotels with great views, are just a few reasons why Gulf Shores was named a Top 10 Best Winter Retreat by Yahoo Travel. “The Gulf Coast's winter weather is very pleasant, especially for folks who otherwise would be shoveling snow in bitter wind chills,” said Duncan Millar, executive director of Golf Gulf Shores. “The attractive rates on our nine courses, great food and beverage options and a host of area activities make Gulf Shores the perfect winter golf destination.”
2.
Eat Local: Royal Reds — deep-water, locally caught Gulf shrimp that are sweet and tasty are the favorite in Gulf Shores. If you're visiting for a few days, try one of the area restaurants to find a sample. Staying longer? Try a local seafood market and cook them in the condo.
3.
Shop for Deals: Golf couples can finish Christmas shopping at the Tanger outlets in Foley — a popular place to find deals and specials. Gulf Shores also prides itself on local boutiques and galleries.
4.
Scenic Drives: Driving along the water's edge is fun, but don't miss the 10-mile slow drive through the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. The slower time and smaller number of tourists returns this ecosystem back to life in the winter.
5.
Pub Crawl: There are plenty of bars and restaurants in Gulf Shores. Start your trek at one end of Beach Boulevard and make your way to the other end. Other great winter activities to blend with Gulf Shores golf include the Blue Angels Homecoming on Nov. 1112; the New Year's Day Polar Bear Dip; visiting historic Fort Morgan, which celebrates its anniversary on Jan. 29; and the nightlife, including The Wharf's 10-hour happy hour. Elberta German Sausage Festival set for Oct. 26 By Lindsay Mott Contributing writer The Elberta Volunteer Fire Department is at it again as it gears up for the second German Sausage Festival of the year on Oct. 26 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festival is held twice a year, always the last Saturday in March and October, and showcases Elberta’s famous German sausage and sauerkraut. Other foods at the festival include German-style filled cabbage, potato salad, goulash, red beans and rice, hamburgers, hot dogs, barbeque sandwiches, ice cream, popcorn and peanuts. There will be baked goods for sale as well. Besides the food, the festival has continuous entertainment for adults and children, including approximately 250 arts and crafts booths. Entertainment includes the Bellview Stumpfiddle Band, performing with the North End Stompers and cloggers. There will also be polka, country and German music and carnival rides. The festival has been a fundraiser for the Elberta Volunteer Fire Department since 1978, and the proceeds are used to improve the fire department and the town as well. Local nonprofit organizations see success through their booth sales and parking lot fees. Now, the festival attracts approximately 30,000 people each time, and approximately 7,000 pounds of Elberta German sausage are prepared.

According to the event’s website, the recipe has changed some over the years, but the original secret recipe for Elberta's famous sausage is credited to Alfred Stucki, who managed Elberta's Locker Plant from 1953 until his death in 1973. The festival is free to the public to attend and is located at the Elberta Town Park at the intersetion of Main and State streets (County Road 83 and US Highway 98). The park is located directly across from Town Hall. If you are using a GPS, use the address 13052 Main St., Elberta, AL, 36530. rom the loveable “Wizard of Oz” character who wished he “only had a brain” to the looming figure that gives us a fright in nearly every Halloweenthemed scary movie, we have a complicated relationship with scarecrows. We love scarecrows for their practical use in saving crops from predatory birds and for their power to evoke autumnal cheer, but they also represent spookiness.
Photos by Mark Robinson Tim Wilson and his family enjoy last year’s Fall Scarecrow Festival.
Our fear of the figure dates back to a time when scarecrows were brought to America by German settlers in Pennsylvania. Then they were called the bootzamon, or bogeyman, and they stood guard over the fields. The boogeyman has since made his way out of the field to under the bed and in the closet to scare small children. But whether you feel warmth or terror toward the scarecrow, they are coming to an Art Center near you. On Friday, Oct. 4, individuals, families and businesses will flock one and all to the steps of The Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach to paint the town a ghoulish orange and black. That’s right; it’s time once again for the annual Fall Scarecrow Festival. From 2:30 to 7:30 p.m., Orange Beach's young and old will race to shape fearsome creatures or friendly figures to bring in the fall and send away the crows. The Coastal Arts Center recommends that you “arrive after school on Friday and be a part of the mad dash to design and build your Scarecrow,” all for the fun or fame of it. And don’t leave too soon and miss out on all the extras this year’s Fall Scarecrow Festival has to offer including the best in show scarecrow awards. A beloved tradition on the Alabama Gulf Coast, this year’s festival has been expanded to include so much more than the scarecrow build.

The Coastal A r t s Center says, “due to the kindness and generosity of the Friends of the Arts, this event will be expanded to include exciting family activities reminiscent of our heritage and the classic fall festivals of the past.” Some of these activities will include live music, food and beverages; pumpkins, gourds and other fall vegetables; Hot Shop and clay shop demonstrations with the Coastal Arts Center’s Artists in residence. The smallest scarecrow builders can also participate in traditional seasonal revelries. Activities for kids will include hayrides, an artists’ alley, a children’s costume contest, apple bobbing, cake walks and other festive fall fun. Admission is free, but if you want to craft your own cuddly or terrifying scarecrow or gather your friends, family, or coworkers in a team for group scarecrow crafting, be sure to make reservations for a scarecrow frame. Visit orangebeachartcenter.com to reserve your frame — they go fast. Join Coastal Arts Center for the Fall Scarecrow Festival on Friday, Oct. 4, from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. on 26389 Canal Road, Orange Beach. For questions, contact the Coastal Arts Center by phone at 251-981-2787 or check out more information on their website at orangebeachartcenter.com.

The Second Annual Festival of Flavor By Theresa Corbin Contributing writer The Festival of Flavor is back for its second year and set to fill Foley with Alabama style, flavor and fun. On Saturday, Oct. 19, the beautiful streets of historic downtown Foley will be paved with taste with the Second Annual Festival of Flavor. The Festival couldn’t come at
a better time. With summer winding down, and the cheer of the holiday season too far off, the Festival of Flavor is a bright spot in October. For the second year, all those near and far are beckoned to come and sample Alabama’s new and fresh recipes alongside our tried and true favorites. “Alabama Festival of Flavor features one of Alabama’s greatest treasures, our abundant
fresh, local fare. Guests can sample food prepared during cooking competitions, learn about traditional Southern recipe secrets from our locally famous chefs, attend a food and wine pairing or acquire tips on creating your own organic garden at home. Stroll through scenic Heritage Park exploring artisans and crafters or catch the relaxing sounds of regional jazz performers,” says the South Baldwin Chamber of commerce’s website. It promises to be more of a festival of the senses than just a festival of flavor. Even though

Three Dog Night
and Little River Band hit The Wharf By Judy Smith Contributing writer You know words to all the songs and can’t help bobbing your head to the laid-back groove. The music of Three Dog Night has formed the soundtrack for many a summer, and every season for that matter, for generations. The timeless quality of their music never goes out of style, and they are bringing all their hits for your listening pleasure. On Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m., Three Dog Night will be joined by the Little River Band as they bring their special brand of classic rock and roll to the Amphitheater at the Wharf in Orange Beach. You don’t want to miss out on a night of great music by these legendary and highly celebrated bands. From 1969 to 1974, Three Dog Night had more Top 10 hits than anybody in any musical genre, sold more records, and sold out more concerts than any of their musical counterparts. Without a doubt, Three Dog Night has made a name for itself in the music industry and is clearly a fan favorite. The band Beachin-august-3329 (no shrimp).indd 1 has 21 consecutive Top 40 hits and 12 straight gold albums, and they sold almost 50 million records by the end of 1975. Danny Hutton, Jimmy Greenspoon, Cory Wells, Michael Allsup, Paul Kingery and Pat Bautz, the members of Three Dog Night, have continued to tour and rock crowds night af-
ter night and have no plans of retiring any time soon. Their music continues to receive heavy radio airplay and generations are still digging the sweet sounds of those great classic songs, such as “Mama Told Me Not to Come,” “Black and White,” “Out in the Country,” “Never Been to Spain,” “Eli’s Coming,” “An Old Fashioned Love Song,” “Easy to be Hard,” “One,” and of course, their most popular — the anthem of peace and love, “Joy to the World.” Most recently, Three Dog Night joined with the London Symphony Orchestra to re-record some of their classics in the 35th Anniversary Hits Collection. The album has been on the BillBoard Top 200 Album chart for an impressive nine months, and the record has been certified Platinum. But the celebration of sounds from the ‘60s and ‘70s doesn’t end with the record-setting greatness of Three Dog Night. One of Australia’s most prolific bands from the 1970s will be opening the show at the scenic Amphitheater. During the 1970s, the Little River Band enjoyed great success in Australia and the United States, selling more than 25 million 8/19/13 records and charting 13 Top 40 hits in the United States while garnering a host of Australian music awards. The band first met with success in Australia for its single “Curiosity Killed the Cat” and soon found fame in the US with the Top 30 hit “It’s a Long Way There.” The band hit the touring circuit fu-

eled on by several chart-topping hits, including “Help Is on Its Way,” “Cool Change,” “Take It Easy on Me,” and “Reminiscing.” The band made history when it charted Top 10 hits for six consecutive years, becoming the first band to ever achieve that success. Today, its worldwide album and CD sales top 30 million. In 2001, the Australian Performing Rights Association selected “Cool Change” as one of the Top 30 Australian songs of all time, and the original members of the band were inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame. Three Dog Night and the Little River Band have solidified their legacies as some of the top vocal bands of all time. Their tight harmonies, soulful guitar licks and heart wrenching songwriting skills helped these bands to create the signature smooth, grooving sound of the 1970s. Capturing the soul of peace and love that the world was searching for during these turbulent times, these bands have created the signature sound of a generation, and the immense power of their work continues to reach every generation of music lovers. While these legendary bands bring a lot of hardware in the award category, their greatest attribute is the power of their music and the fun they project
October 2013 Beachin’ 41 to the audiences every time they hit the stage. The power of their music is represented in the many generations of fans that the bands perform to every night, helping some listeners recall the days of their youth ,while creating new memories for generations to come. “The music of Three Dog Night and the Little River Band really take me back to my childhood,” longtime fan Neil Nicholson said. “Hearing that music makes me remember a simpler time and still captures that free-spirited age. Their music really brings back a lot of memories.” Music lovers of all ages are invited to relive memories or make new special moments with children and grandchildren. The music of Three Dog Night and the Little River Band is still as relevant and powerful today as it was when it first hit the airwaves. To see these legends perform live is an experience that you do not want to miss. On Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m., Three Dog Night and the Little River Band will bring their chart-topping hits to the Amphitheater at the Wharf in Orange Beach. For more information on ticket options, you can check out the Wharf’s official website at amphitheateratthewharf.com.

WILLIE SUGARCAPPS
to perform at first-ever fall Music at Meyer Park By Blake Phelps The members of the newly formed “super group,” Willie Sugarcapps, have been making their rounds throughout the Southeast over the summer months. On Thursday, Oct. 3, the group will make its way to Gulf Shores for the first-ever fall Music at Meyer Park concert. Now in its third year, Music at Meyer Park has grown into a fan favorite for locals and visitors, alike. While this collection of free springtime concerts has been a huge success, Programs and Events Supervisor Lesley Dethloff says fans have consistently asked for more. “We have seen an overwhelming response to the Music at Meyer Park idea,” said Dethloff. “Each year we hear fans begging for more concerts, specifically a concert in the fall. We feel like the time is right to expand into another season and Willie Sugarcapps is the perfect band to help us do so.” Way down in lower Alabama, almost every weekend for the past two years, folks have been coming together for a music gathering called The Frog Pond at Blue Moon Farm. One part house concert, one part Levon
Helm's Midnight Ramble, the affair has hosted some of the country's finest songwriters, pickers, bluesman and troubadours. It was here that frequent encounters between reoccurring artists — Grayson Capps, Will Kimbrough, Corky Hughes and the duo Sugarcane Jane featuring Savana Lee and Anthony Crawford — led to the birth of a band, the aptly named Willie Sugarcapps. “Willie Sugarcapps is a homecoming for all of us,” explains Will Kimbrough. “It’s coming full circle back to the beginning of why we do this in the first place and the joy of what happens when you play and sing with people who are alike in spirit and mind.” Their collective musical experiences mingle together to create a new kind of organic and artisanal music. It's laid back, it rocks, it comes from classic country, from the blues, from New Orleans and from the best kind of rock 'n' roll. It tells a story through five individual voices full of character and experience with humanity, energy and soul. It's comforting to know that music in the hands of these five artists still happens for no other reason than purely the sake of the music itself. Willie Sugarcapps will take the stage at Music at Meyer Park at 6 p.m. For more information, call 251968-1172 or visit gulfshoresal.gov.
