Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014

It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets 10 Beachin’ ● November 2018

very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

Anthony’s salon is at 23175 Perdido Beach Boulevard in Orange Beach & their phone number is 251.974.1514. Please say we sent you! www.anthonyjonesinc.net

ride into the

SUNSET

In Gulf Shores, just miles from the rows of fast food joints and stacks of plastic beach knick knacks that beckon to tourists, there is quiet. Bicyclists pedal their way past forests where migratory birds, alligators and even bobcat live. Waves wash gently over the peaceful Navy Cove Oyster Farm as the creatures gurgle and grow under the water. Tiny mom and pop owned restaurants are filled with laughter as regulars stumble in from work and the sea for a coffee. This is life on the island, away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist scene, down Fort Morgan Road where the days are long and warm and nights are breezy and the stuff memories of made of. Take a Saturday and head west on Fort Morgan Road. Pause to listen to the sea breeze float through the trees of Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. Stop in at Behind the Pines Restaurant where the staff will fix you a cold one. Drive until the end where you can watch fishermen bring their last catch in for the day as the sun sets behind them. This is life on Fort Morgan Road. Enjoy.

The Fort Morgan Road Trail Why drive when you can walk? The Fort Morgan Road Trail begins just outside the western border of Gulf State Park and travels more than 5 miles west along Fort Morgan Road. The paved trail is open to runners, bicycles and strollers and is a gentle hike that winds past quiet neighborhoods and the Peninsula Golf Club. Parking, restrooms and a water fountain are available at Lagoon Park, 18068 Fort Morgan Road.

Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge Not far from the trail’s eastern end, you can continue your adventure by hiking one of several trails that are part of the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. Here you can enjoy another gentle, paved walk. This time, however, you will feel as though you’ve stumbled into a secret forest nestled far from the glowing restaurants and tourist attractions of the beach. The roughly 6,500 acre refuge is home to bobcats, coyote, alligators, migratory birds and endangered sea turtles. The staff offers regular guided tours or you can park at the trail heads and start out on your own.

The Pines The further you travel down Fort Morgan Road, the less development you see. Eventually, you feel like you are enveloped by trees water and clear blue skies. If you need to make a last-minute stop to fill up on gas, ice, snacks or alcohol, duck into The Pines. For great food and even better live music drive around back to Behind the Pines where a bartender who calls herself, “The Witch” can cure whatever ails you with her cocktails and brews.

Sassy Bass and Tacky Jack’s The towering pine trees are deceptive. It may feel desolate on the furthest points of Fort Morgan Road but there is a thriving night life and great restaurants. Drop in at Sassy Bass where the enormous menu can accommodate sea food lovers and the pickiest of children. The fresh oysters grown nearby at Navy Cove Oysters are worth more than one stop. The easy going atmosphere is inviting and family friendly. Further down the road at Fort Morgan Marina near Tacky Jack’s you can sit in the shade and watch the boats come and go or chat with Coast Guard crews who sail across the bay from Dauphin Island to stop in for a meal too.

Fort Morgan and the beach The forests have thinned. You can begin to see water on both sides of the highway. Large brick structures to your left can mean one thing, you have reached Fort Morgan itself and soon, the end of your drive. Stop into the fort to learn its history. You might be surprised to learn that troops served here long after the Civil War. Nearly 2,000 soldiers were stationed here during World War I. After you’ve climbed the steep steps of the fort and explored its nooks and crannies head outside and sit near the fishermen finishing their hauls for the day. The sun is beginning to set and the water glistens. Orange butterflies skip between the tall swaying sea grass and, if you are lucky, will land gently on your outstretched finger. Relax and enjoy the sea breeze before you head back to civilization. This is true island living and life on Fort Morgan Road is grand.

Weaving magical experiences on the Gulf Coast BY CRYSTAL COLE Tucked away under tall, mature oak trees on County Road 10 is a hidden gem of Baldwin County textile artisanry. Clara’s Loom and Coastal Textile Center sits unassuming just inland of the Bon Secour River, but the artist inside is the true draw. Celia Dionne, owner and artist, has been sewing and working with textiles since she was a young girl. 16 Beachin’ ● November 2018

“My mother sewed, and I would go through the fabric shops and feel everything while she chose a pattern,” Dionne said. “You weren’t supposed to touch anything, but I was small and loved fabric.” When she graduated school, she was given some hand-woven items whose texture appealed to her. “I said ‘I want to do that one day,’” Dionne said.

Dionne has been going after that dream for decades now. From selling her work in a local coffee shop in Tennessee while working with sheep on her farm to owning her own shop on the Gulf Coast, she’s come far in the business. Although her name is Celia, she went with the name Clara’s Loom for a few reasons. “I wove on an antique loom in

Franklin (Tennessee),” Dionne said. “My name didn’t lend itself to a business name. The previous owner’s name was Clara, and a lot of people would come see the antique loom as well as me.” Clara’s Loom offers different yarns for purchase as well as completed crafts, scarfs and shawls. Dionne also provides classes for those interested in learning the skill. Taking anywhere from half a day to three whole days, participants can come and learn how to weave by hand on a frame loom. Although her location is off the beaten path, Dionne says she still gets

a lot of traffic to her shop. “It is a destination,” Dionne said. “People who are interested come, and it’s sort of self-selecting. If they hear about what I do, they will come here, and I get people from everywhere. I have people who come to town just to take a class, and they’ll spend a night or two.” Dionne said she’s constantly surprised by what her students come up with after they’ve finished her class. “I present a technique; it’s not cookie cutter,” Dionne said. “Then you can do what you like. I’ve had people bring stuff back to the shop to show

me, and it’s always interesting how creative they can be. It’s not always stuff I would have come up with, but it’s all beautiful.”

WHO WAS FRANK BROWN? The festival is dedicated to the late Frank Brown, who was night watchman at the Flora-Bama for 28 years, and whose moral values, integrity and strength of character still endure. Mr. Frank, as he was known by all, (was 91 years old when he retired) was featured on Paul Harvey’s syndicated radio show, “The Rest of the Story.” At the club, Mr. Frank wore a pair of matched revolvers, slung low, but he didn’t have to use them. Usually it was enough to say, “Now, you boys don’t have to be like that. What would yo’ mamma say?” All the regulars knew and respected him. He was as much a part of the Bama as the sunrise was a part of the night. He didn’t worry too much about material things. He thought: success is when a man gets what he wants; happiness is when a man wants what he’s got. He was in his glory, just staying around listening to the music. He was the last person the performers saw at closing time. Mr. Frank was 93 years old when he passed away in 1988, and he left a legacy that we can all share. Some say his spirit still lives on in the celebration of the music. He still lives on today in the memories of those who were fortunate enough to have known him. It is those fond memories that drive all of us that are involved in the festival to ensure that it continues year after year. The atmosphere here just seems to inspire collaboration and inspiration. A lot of the songwriters are not household names, but their songs are. It is impossible to list or describe the songwriters, musicians and performers that participate in this festival. It’s a living museum, that’s what it is.” — Frank Brown Music Festival

Décor on the Shore HOLIDAY DECORATING ON THE COAST

I

BY MARY MESSER

’m often asked what the Christmas decor trends are for the year, to which my usual reply is “Whatever you wish it to be!” The Traditional Red and Green of Christmases Past, while still honored, finds itself nestled in amongst as many different designs as can be dreamt. Rich colors from across an imaginary rainbow join an array of glittering lights, garland, ornaments, ribbons and bows. “A photo is worth a thousand words” was my thought as I selected these ideas to share. As I write this article, we are in the disheartening throes

of the aftermath which Hurricane Michael left across our neighbors’ lives. Abundant will be the opportunities offered us to abound in what the Christmas Season is about. Perhaps look toward the east to those who are fortunate enough to have a home, and offer them some Christmas decorating Messer items and share a little holiday cheer! A nationally acclaimed Interior Designer, Mary’s talent is displayed in recognizable designs of residential and commercial properties across the Southeast.

Crazy Sista Cooking with Lucy Buffett

Coastal Crab and Corn Bisque

This bisque features two of our region’s sweetest delicacies: Silver Queen corn and blue crab. It’s only natural that they would pair so beautifully together in this rich, silky soup. Crab and corn bisque is a standard on the menu of many local restaurants and in-house holds year- Buffett round. Tourists can’t wait to get her to order it and locals can’t get enough of it either. What a lot of our visitors may not realize, however, is just how easy it is to re-create, so don’t wait to come see us to try this classic favorite. Serves 6 5 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 2 cups finely chopped onion 2 tablespoons finely chopped garlic 1 cup finely chopped celery 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 cups seafood stock or chicken broth 2 cups heavy cream 2 cups milk 2 bay leaves ¼ teaspoons LuLu’s Crazy Creola Seasoning or other Creole Seasoning 1 teaspoon sea salt ¼ teaspoon white pepper ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon liquid crab boil 2 cups fresh corn kernels (or frozen if necessary) ½ cup chopped green onions 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoons sweet white wine such as sake 1 pound cooked fresh lump blue crabmeat, picked through for shells, handled carefully to keep meat in big chunks ½ teaspoon seasoned salt Pinch of ground nutmeg 1. In a medium stockpot, melt 3 tablespoons of the butter with the olive oil over low heat. 2. Add the onion, garlic and celery. Cover and cook over 34 Beachin’ ● November 2018

medium heat, stirring occasionally, for three minutes or until the vegetables have softened. 3. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons butter and cook, stirring, until the butter has melted. 4. Add the flour and cook, stirring, as the vegetables begin to brown. 5. Add 1 ½ cups of the stock, the cream and the milk and stir well. 6. Add the bay leaves, Creole seasoning, sea salt, white pepper, black pepper and liquid crab boil. 7. Cover and simmer over low heat, being careful not to let it boil. 8. Add the corn, ¼ cup of the green onion, the Worcestershire, and the wine. Simmer for about five minutes. 9. Add the crabmeat and seasoned salt. Cover and simmer for about 20 minutes. 10. Stir in the nutmeg, the remaining ¼ cup green onion, and the remaining ½ cup stock. Simmer for five minutes more, remove and discard the bay leaves, and then serve.

LuLu’s Crazy Creola Seasoning Makes ½ Cup 1 tablespoon sea salt 2 tablespoons granulated garlic or garlic powder 4 teaspoons granulated onion or onion powder ¼ cup paprika 1 ½ teaspoons freshly ground black pepper 2 teaspoons cayenne pepper 2 teaspoons white pepper ½ teaspoon dried thyme ½ teaspoon dried oregano Combine all the ingredients and store in an airtight container
