ust as Beachin’ rolls in waves and basks in rays of Alabama’s Gulf Coast, the areas of Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan inspire each issue with unique events, mouth-watering seafood and Southern dishes, Jessica Jones apparel to suit beach bums and country clubbers. This guide to the Gulf Coast offers insight into local restaurants, nightlife, attractions and events that will ensure time well spent on Pleasure Island. First and foremost, the humid subtropical climate and white-sand beaches provide an oasis for guests. Don flip-flops and Hawaiian shirts or just a bathing suit. Spend hours of tranquility against a crashing-ocean wave backdrop with a good book, umbrella drink, or a completely blank slate. Dig toes into grains of sand, collect sea mementos or build sandcastles with the kids. Take a refreshing dip or dive into water adventures like parasailing, jet skiing or surfing. The area also offers family fun outings like the zoo, miniature golf, arcades, go carts, outlet, surf shop and boutique shopping. Whether you’re looking for a new cover-up or an evening gown, Pleasure Island’s got you covered. Souvenirs range from shot glasses to seashells — go ahead, make your friends jealous. Or let your inner child out to play with a day filled of bumper boats, foam machines, Tiki huts and waterfalls. Or perhaps Pleasure Island provides playtime for you and your sweetheart. Golf the gorgeous shores of the Gulf of Mexico with lush greens, a golf cart and two cold glasses of sweet tea or head for some relaxation built for two with a trip to the spa for couples massages. Maybe a tandem bicycle ride by the beach or late night stroll on the boardwalk is more your style. Perhaps fine dining and dancing...nothing says “I love you” like cracking crab legs and whisking away for a salty-sea waltz. Or, why not have it all? Rock out to beach-side concerts, get inspired at the Orange Beach Festival of Art, dig in at the Island’s annual Shrimp Festival and jump for moon pies with Mardi Gras goers. Whatever your taste, leave the itinerary at home and let Beachin’ be your guide to Southern hospitality, sandy feet and memories that leave you craving your next opportunity to Beach-it.

Locals enhance NAIA soccer championship experience By Ally Mills Dorrough Gulf Shores and Orange Beach volunteers are set to welcome and help host athletes during the NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship in December. At the heart of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is one sound principle – character. The NAIA strives to help athletes build a strong sense of character on and off the field. To further this mission, the Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Sports Commission (GSOBSC), along with the cities of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, partners with the organization to promote an honorary coaches program as part of the championship experience. During the 2013 NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship from Dec. 2-7 at the Orange Beach Sportsplex, local community leaders volunteering as honorary coaches will serve as community liaisons for each team to make every player feel welcome and special as they discover Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Lee Kramer, director of marketing for Mandoki Hospitality in Gulf Shores, has served as an honorary coach for the past three years. He expressed his admiration for NAIA’s dedicated players, coaches and staff and looks forward to another dose of exhilarating play. “The NAIA soccer tournament is my favorite sports commission event,” Kramer said. “Soccer has been a lifelong passion of mine, and this event brings some of the country’s best collegiate soccer athletes to our little town. It has been an honor to participate in the festivities as an honorary coach. I have been able to form a relationship with the coaches and players and introduce them to this beautiful place I call home.” The NAIA and the sports com-
mission encourage locals to let Alabama Gulf Coast’s spirit of Southern hospitality shine by impacting student-athletes through the honorary coach program. Based on the NAIA’s character-building foundation, Eric Olson, NAIA director of championships, explained the program’s impact on connecting athletes with host communities. “The NAIA’s honorary coach program provides our student-athletes an opportunity for a deeper integration into the host community,” Olson said. “These person touch-points leave a lasting effect on the individual and enhance the student-athlete experience. We at the NAIA pride ourselves in putting the student-athlete first, and this is great opportunity for the local community to join us in that cause.” Beth Gendler, vice president of sales for the GSOBSC, said because of the efforts of committed volunteers, the sports commission along with the local municipalities is able to carry out successful sporting events. “Our beach communities have gone above and beyond to make a difference in athletes’ lives by dedicating time to ensure the girls have a safe, exciting and competitive experience on Alabama’s Gulf Coast,” Gendler said. “It’s encouraging to see locals help further the NAIA’s message of helping these rising stars develop and maintain a strong sense of character.” To learn more about this program, contact the sports commission at 1-800-745-SAND. To get in on all the action, fans can purchase an adult all-tournament pass for $30, a youth all-tournament pass for $15, an adult day pass for $10 or a $5 day pass for children 10 and under. Tickets can also be purchased for the opening banquet on Sunday, Dec. 1 and the semi-finalist
banquet on Thursday, Dec. 5 for $25 each. Both banquets will take place at the Orange Beach Events Center at The Wharf. Only cash and checks will be accepted for all events. For more information, visit bit.ly/SJILNr. To learn more about the NAIA, go to naia.org. For information on upcoming athletic events along Alabama’s Gulf Coast, visit gulfshoresorangebeachsports.com or call 1-800745-SAND.
About Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Sports Commission
Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Sports Commission is a partnership between Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism, the Alabama Gulf Coast Area Chamber of Commerce and the cities of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. In 2007, this commission became a department within Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Tourism. In this role, the commission — along with assistance from both cities — works to bring quality sporting events to Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism is an official corporate sponsor of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). For information, visit gulfshoresorangebeachsports.com.
About the NAIA
Since 1937, the NAIA has administered programs and championships in proper balance with the overall educational experience. In 2000, the NAIA reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the character-building aspects of sport. Through the Champions of Character program, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2010
It was a beautiful summer morning when we left Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and getting a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissatisfied with the last few attempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideration our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on time to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beautiful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a little chicken after the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, after that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condition her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep conditioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of motion, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer
gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the conditioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condition our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all times our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. After we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and conditioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-the-counter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. After shampooing and before conditioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, putting any conditioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. After she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bottle. Anyway our cuts cost us $40 each, best money we ever spent and yes we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.
Well worth a visit!

December 2013
November was a good month with a few days of cold weather and more than enough wind. December will be a little colder, but if you chase specks this will be to your benefit. Specks don’t like water below 65 degrees. When the water temperature drops below 65 degrees, they move in mass to the creeks surrounding Mobile Bay. They also do badly in fresh or even brackish water. They are salt water fish. As all our local creeks are tidal creeks, they all hold a good amount of salt water. As the tides come and go, the salt water is moved up stream every 12 hours or so. As a result, you’ll be surprised how far up stream the salt water goes. As salt water is heavier than fresh water, it sticks to the bottoms of the creeks and rivers. Except for a few days, November was a nice month — some cold nights, but mostly mild and windy. Water will pool and form large areas of mostly salty water, normally staying above 65 degrees. This provides the specks with a safe, livable spot on the rivers. This also tends to bunch up the fish in deeper spots and make it a little easier to locate them. Locating them is the easy part. Placing your bait and recognizing the soft bite of a cold speck is the hardest part. Baits range from live shrimp, to plastics, to other artificials. Even trout fisherman have their special bait. Mine is gulp baits. I use gulps and live shrimp exclusively during both summer and winter months — to each his own. The bait needs to be fished slowly and on the bottom, always giving the fish plenty of time to eat the bait before setting the hook. Have a good trolling motor as well as a fully charged battery on the boat. Relax and enjoy the day. Keep moving and pay attention to your sonar. The inter-coastal canal may not be a creek, but it holds specks during cold weather as well. It also has a great ramp. Keep in mind that your fishing license expired

in August — time to renew. Also know that as the fish bunch up on the creeks and rivers, so do the fishermen, and so do the law enforcement folks. Stay legal. The state works hard to keep our wild life in great shape and they need our help to keep it that way. If a speck is not your cup of tea, keep in mind that red fish love fresh and brackish water. They are tough fish and do very well during the Gulf Coast winter. Use the same baits as you use for specks. You can fish the baits a little faster if you feel better doing that. Cut baits will work as well. Red fish feed by sight and smell. Always fish all the stumps, logs, piers, bulk heads or any other structure you can find. Most of the large reds are off shore but its not uncommon to catch red fish in the 26-inch range so keep your equipment and line in good shape. If you find yourself on the water during a no wind and sunny day, don’t be afraid to take some heavier tackle and larger chunks of cut bait and head to the Dixey Bar on the south end of Mobile Bay. You can drift or anchor on the bar and set numbers of lines on the bottom with fresh cut baits. I net mullet in the creeks and cut the filet off. Then cut the filet long ways in half at an angle making two triangle shaped strips of bait. Hook it on the pointed end and drop it to the bottom. The filet will flap in the current flashing the fish scales as well as making a scent line. The red fish will be looking for food on the out going tide and they’ll be very hungry. As always, stay safe and most especially, stay dry. Know our laws and rules of the road. The best fishing trip is one that you return from with all your passengers and equipment. Gulf Shores announces slate of holiday events By Blake Phelps Whether it’s catching a hilarious holiday musical or marveling at the glow of the lighted parade, families won’t have to look far for fun and excitement this season. The City of Gulf Shores has announced a full slate of events planned for its annual holiday celebration and invites locals and visitors to enjoy their Christmas on the Alabama Gulf Coast. “The City of Gulf Shores is proud to be partnering with the Alabama Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce and local businesses in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach to promote the Coastal Christmas campaign,” Grant Brown, recreation and cultural affairs director, said. “We encourage all businesses to participate by decorating for the season to help make our community an unforgettable holiday destination.” Gulf Shores will kick off its holiday festivities at the Erie H. Meyer
Civic Center on Tuesday, Dec. 3 with A Christmas Musical Celebration starring pianist, vocalist and musical director Brian Gurl. This five person production features a wide variety of Christmas melodies and holiday favorites — performed like you’ve never heard them before — with a taste of rock n’ roll, Broadway, jazz and a little bit of comedy. “The audience better get ready for a jazzy, rocky, white hot, rollicking good time,” Gurl said. “Greensleeves will never be the same and Jingle Bells better hang on for dear life because we’re going to melt Frosty faster than a balmy Gulf Shores afternoon.” Free tickets for the show are available at the Activity Center box office on a first come, first serve basis. The box office is located at 260 Clubhouse Drive and office hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The holiday fun continues on Friday, Dec. 6 with the Gulf Shores Lighted Christmas Parade and Beach
Brian Gurl will kick off the holiday festivities with “Christmas Musical Celebration” at the Erie H. Meyer Civic Center.
Celebration. The evening parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature festive lighted floats from around the region. Large crowds of spectators looking to soak up the holiday spirit are anticipated along Highway 59 as parade entries make their way from Clubhouse Drive to the Gulf Shores Public Beach.

Have a white Christmas at The Wharf By Theresa Corbin Contributing writer Here in The South, our dreams of a white Christmas may not involve snow, but they can involve the white sands of Orange Beach. The Wharf at Orange Beach has a spectacular line up for this holiday season. And the season has already begun to ring in the cheer at The Wharf. On Nov. 16, The Wharf’s Sound and Light Spectacular kicked off the Season of Joy with nightly light shows at 6 and 7 p.m. on Main Street.
Spectra
Spectra light and sound shows are always unique, and that is no different for The Wharf’s holiday show. It’s free for all to come and experience the celebration in a new way. The Orange Beach Community website, orangebeach.ws, says the Spectra show “will create a special holiday setting for customers to enjoy shopping, dining and entertainment with family and friends.”
Ice Skating Rink
But the holiday cheer doesn’t stop at the light and sound show. On Nov. 22, The Wharf’s Holiday Skating Rink opened. The rink of ice will be chilled to the perfect skating temperature for young and old to come and experience an iconic tradition many southerners miss out on. Remember to wrap up in your warmest sweater and scarf, but don’t worry, The Wharf will provide the skates. For $8 you will be able to hop on the ice for two hours and glide away with you skate rental in the style of Union Square in New York without the hassle of air travel. For another $2, a total of $10, you will get your skate rental, time on the ice, and a Ferris wheel ticket. Skating will be open from Monday through Friday 4-10 p.m., and 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Hours may vary on Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Pictures with Santa
Be ready to swing back by The Wharf with the kids
in tow because Santa Clause is coming to town. Santa has begun his special appearances at The Wharf for pictures from 4-8 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, and Saturdays 12-8 p.m. through Dec. 22. According to The Wharf’s website, pictures, including a Wharf souvenir picture frame, will be available for purchase for $10 and portion of the proceeds to benefit the Christian Service Center of Orange Beach.
Tree Lighting
No holiday season would be complete without a traditional Christmas tree lighting, and The Wharf has scheduled its ceremony for Dec. 3 at 5:30 p.m. in Marlin Circle for all to come share in the yuletide cheer.
New Year’s Eve street party
And when Christmas is wrapped up, The Wharf will continue the celebration for its annual New Year’s Eve street party. Everyone is invited! Don’t worry, no one will miss the game. It will be playing on a number of big screens at The Wharf. “The New Year’s Eve festivities include live music, fireworks and the traditional Marlin Drop at midnight,” says the Orange Beach Community website.” Guests can also purchase the Palms VIP experience. The package includes an exclusive VIP lounge area located at the Palms, premium views of the fireworks, bands, Marlin Drop and revelers and includes hors d’oeuvres, beer, wine, soft drinks and a cash bar is available. Tickets are $75 and available for purchase at the Amphitheater at The Wharf Box Office or through Ticketmaster. Live band performances and VIP access kick off the night at 7 p.m.. Come reel in the New Year at The Wharf.” All through the season, many shops and restaurants will be offering special seasonal promotions. Make all your White Christmas dreams come true at The Wharf where there may not be white snow, but there is always white sand. Representatives from the U.S. Marine Corps will be in the lobby of the Civic Center to collect the toys. The Baldwin Pops will perform many of the holiday favorites for which they are known, including carols from the British isles, “Greensleeves,” “Christmas Holiday” and their show-
piece, the “Nutcracker Suite.” “There will be a special guest appearance for all the kids to meet and greet during the first half of the concert …so bring the little ones,” said Brooks. The Foley Civic Center is located at 407 East Laurel Ave. (U.S. Hwy. 98), just west of downtown Foley. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and seating is limited to 430. For more information, go to www.VisitFoley.org or call 251-943-1300.
BCHM offers holiday blessings with celebration, memory tree Submitted by Tammy Kinney You are cordially invited to a Christmas Celebration at the Baldwin County Heritage Museum on Sunday Dec. 8, from 2-4 p.m. Join us for our
Christmas Tree display as we celebrate the many different cultures that helped shape Baldwin County. During this celebration, we will also host the Angel Memory Tree and lighting with entertainment and light
refreshments. This tree is filled with tributes in memory or in honor of friends, family and loved ones. For a donation of $10 each, an Angel will be named and placed on the tree for the one you want to remember or honor.
South Baldwin Community Theatre’s ‘Nuncrackers: The Nunsense Christmas Musical’ opens Dec. 6 Submitted by Michelle McCambridge South Baldwin Community Theatre will present “Nuncrackers: The Nunsense Christmas Musical” on consecutive weekends beginning Dec. 6. “Nuncrackers” is the fourth show in Dan Goggin’s beloved series of Nunsense musicals, and is directed by Jan Hinnen. The show’s choreography is directed by Jamie Parks and Jackie Dahlman is musical director. The “Nunsense Christmas Musical,” “Nuncrackers,” takes place in real time in the basement of Mount Saint Helen’s Convent. It is the first TV Special being taped in the Cable Access TV Studio built by Reverend Mother. It stars the endearing nuns, the tipsy Father Virgil and some of Mt.
Saint Helen’s most talented students. Watch and enjoy as the sisters plan a special version of “The Nutcracker” and laugh at the hysterical diversions they encounter along with their on-air advertisements for the Catholic Home Shopping Network. The uplifting holiday music includes some traditional holiday carols and a sing-along as well as some Christmas Carol spoofs including: “Here We Come-a-Waffle-ing;” “The Holly and the Ivory;” “Twelve Days Prior to Christmas;” “Santa Ain’t Comin’ To Our House” and “We Three Kings of Orient Are Us.” The show will make you laugh and maybe tug at your heartstrings as you take an adventure with the imperfect and lovable sisters and maybe receive
a message from above. “Nuncrackers” is the perfect way to insure your holiday season is merry and bright. Performance dates are Dec. 6, 7 and 8 and Dec. 13, 14 and 15. Friday and Saturday shows start at 7:30 p.m. and the curtain rises for Sunday shows at 2 p.m. Tickets, priced at $18 for adults and $15 for students, can be purchased at sbct.biz and at the theatre box office. Tickets go on sale online Monday, Nov. 25 and the box office opens on Wednesday, Nov. 27. Box Office hours will be Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and one hour before each performance. Credit cards are accepted. SBCT is located at 2022 W. 2nd St. in Gulf Shores. For more information go to sbct.biz or call 25-968-6721.

Foley Celebrates Christmas By Barbara Warthen

t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Foley’s Heritage Park, as the park transitions into a winter wonderland in preparation for Foley’s annual Christmas celebrations. Festivities begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6 with Foley’s Christmas in the Park, which includes the lighting of the city Christmas tree, Christmas carols and a visit from Santa, complete with elves. “Christmas in the Park is a festive celebration where our local community and visitors alike come together to enjoy the season in our beautiful, decorated park,” Linda Hula, events planner with the city of Foley, said. Local businesses, churches and civic groups decorate live trees with a theme of their choice to create a “Christmas Tree Lane.” “The mayor lights the official
Christmas tree, local school groups sing carols and the Foley Caboose Club provides free train rides around the park for children of all ages to enjoy. Folks can stroll through a miniature Christmas village and the Christmas Tree Lane, while enjoying free treats and sipping on hot cocoa,” Hula said. Saturday, Dec. 7 is the annual Foley Christmas parade, sponsored by the Foley Kiwanis Club. The parade begins at 10 a.m. from the Armory on Violet Avenue, and proceeds south on Ala. 59, west on Verbena Avenue, north on S. Oak Street and east on U.S. 98, ending at the intersection of Ala. 59 (McKenzie Street) and U.S. 98 (Laurel Avenue). No matter the official weather prediction for the day, there will be snow, and lots of it, in Heritage Park on Saturday, Dec. 7. Foley’s annual
“Let It Snow” event lasts from about 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. “The snow is created from 40 tons of ice that are ground into shavings and blown over roped off areas reserved for the children to play in,” Hula said.” There are two separate areas for playing in the snow — one for younger children and one for the larger children. “Let It Snow” is a free event and involves much more than snow. The festivities include live entertainment, a children’s art village, food vendors and inflatable bouncy houses. “The gazebo in Heritage Park is an excellent backdrop for taking those special Christmas photos with family and friends,” Hula said. Mrs. Claus will also be on hand to read Christmas stories to the children.

Novel features Gulf Shores scenery “Running Back” by Dr. Freddy Grant captures the essence of life in the South and takes an insightful look at one man’s journey of the heart and his lifelong search to find what matters most. Is it ever possible to get a second chance? Dr. Keith Miller thinks he has found the secret to crafting a second chance for himself. One that will allow him to recapture a lifetime of sweet memories he selfishly walked away from. In his first novel, Meridian gynecologist Dr. Freddy Grant creates a rich group of characters – the handsome former high school football star who is now a driven, successful research physician, his loving young wife and new baby. But lack of moral character leads him away from his commitments. Grant says he was first inspired to write the novel when he returned to
watch a high school football game the year after his son Doug graduated. He loved watching his son play football and thoroughly enjoyed all the experiences of parenting his two children, Doug and Emily Joy. As he looked into the stands and saw a couple watching their son play that night, he noticed the intensity of love and concern on their faces. He then began to wonder, “What if I had never experienced it? What would my life be like if I hadn’t been a part of my children’s lives?” With that thought in mind, Grant set about starting his novel, a work that took him almost 10 years to complete. With support from his wife, Linda, children Doug and Emily Joy, and close friends who encouraged him, “Running Back” was finally published. The novel starts in the northeast but quickly moves to Gulf Shores, then Meridian. Grant describes his work as fictional drama with a bit of
science fiction. Readers will enjoy the pace of the book as well as the familiarity of the characters and places in east Mississippi and west Alabama.
About the author
A native of York, Ala., Grant has practiced OB/GYN in Meridian since 1988. He now limits his practice to gynecology. He says that growing up and working in an area where family ties are so strong, he couldn’t imagine what his life would have been like if he hadn’t been a father (and now a grandfather).
About the book
“Running Back” has a Facebook page and is available for sale on Amazon.com, and these Meridian locations: The Atrium, Loeb’s, Harry Mayer Clothiers, the Rush Foundation Hospital gift shop/The Pear Tree and Southern Accents. The paperback edition is priced at $9.95 and the hardcover edition is $27.95. Photo by Bob Nemens

Jason Aldean tickets on sale now for March show By Judy Smith Contributing writer
C
ountry superstar Jason Aldean is bringing his highly anticipated Night Train tour to the Amphitheater at The Wharf in Orange Beach on March 15, and you definitely need to get a ticket to enjoy this amazing ride. Aldean will be performing with one of the hottest groups in country music, Florida Georgia Line, and rising star Tyler Farr, making it one stellar night filled with lots of great talent and sweet country music. Tickets just went on sale Nov. 22 and are sure to go fast, so don’t delay. Go ahead and pick up your tickets for this mega show. Aldean has been selling out arenas all across the nation, and when he hits the Amphitheater at The Wharf this spring, you simply don’t want to miss this dynamic performance. This promises to be one of the most explosive shows of the year. As a performer, Aldean never disappoints. With five albums and 16 chart-topping hits under his belt, Aldean has plenty in his musical arsenal to entertain any crowd. The 2012 ACM Male Vocalist of the Year will bring songs from his criticallyacclaimed latest album, “Night Train,” including “1994,” the fun and catchy tribute to Joe Diffie, and No. 1 chart toppers, “The Only Way I Know,” “Night Train,” and “Take a Little Ride.” Fans can also expect this Georgia native to bring some of his greatest hits, such as “Hicktown,” “Dirt Road Anthem,” “Johnny Cash,” “Tattoos on this Town,” “She’s Country,” “Big Green Tractor,” “Fly Over States,” and many more. Aldean already has nine No. 1 singles, and there appears to be no stopping him, much to the delight of fans who can expect more great music from this hardworking entertainer. This is “My Kinda Party” that you don’t want to miss. Growing up in Macon, Ga., Aldean fostered a love for all the country classics, learning to play them from his dad. After his dad would come home from work each day, Aldean would receive a guitar lesson from his father. Aldean’s love for traditional country music al-
ways shines through. When Aldean made his debut at a musical showcase in Atlanta in 1998, he performed a few original songs and blew the crowd away. After the show, Aldean was approached by Michael Knox of the Warner-Chappell song publishing company, and the rest, as they say, is history. Aldean moved to Nashville and began bombarding the country music scene with his upbeat, energetic songs with a deep country beat. On the Night Train Tour, Aldean is excited to have one of the hottest acts in music joining him, Florida Georgia Line, and he has been quick to praise this powerhouse duo. Aldean has called the duo “a shot in the arm for country music” and has described them as a “kind of new age of Brooks and Dunn sort of thing.” Bandmates Brian Kelley from Ormond Beach, Fla., and Monroe, Ga. native Tyler Hubbard were humbled by the praise from this country music superstar. “That’s obviously a huge honor,” Kelley told CMT News writer Alison Bonaguro. “That’s a huge compliment from Aldean because we look up to him. He’s an amazing artist and great guy.” Florida Georgia Line first came onto the music scene in 2010, but really didn’t make a splash until their megahit, an anthem to summer fun, “Cruise” crashed onto the airwaves in the spring of 2012. A remix version of the song performed with Nelly crossed over into all
genres and hit at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Since then, they’ve climbed the charts with the fun, energetic tunes, including “Get Your Shine On,” “Tip It Back,” and “Round Here.” Rounding out this super tour will be Tyler Farr. Although he is a newcomer to the performing stage, he’s definitely not new to the music scene. This Garden City, Mo. boy cut his teeth in the music industry as a teenager as he followed his stepfather around who just happened to be lead guitarist for the iconic George Jones. Farr has toured with Colt Ford for whom he penned the song “Hey Ya’ll,” but he’s starting to make a name for himself in the industry. Farr’s song of slightly obsessive love, “Redneck Crazy,” has been burning up the radio waves, and he always puts on a show with lots of energy and emotion. So, we are offering a little reminder for those that might not have purchased their tickets yet: You better get them fast. And if you’re wondering what to get that music lover in your life for Christmas, these tickets will be the ideal gift. Fans of Aldean, Florida Georgia Line, or Tyler Farr would definitely love for Santa to leave tickets to this show in their stocking. For more information on purchasing tickets, check out the official Amphitheater at The Wharf website or Ticketmaster.com. Tickets are sure to go fast, and this high energy show is one that you do not want miss.

Traditional favorites
Italian Mostarda (marinated fruit salad, with a kick)
Holiday Apple Pie Moonshine 1 gallon apple cider 1 gallon apple juice 3 cups white sugar 8 cinnamon sticks 1 liter of 190 proof moonshine or grain alcohol like Everclear In a large stock pot, combine the apple cider, apple juice, sugar and cinnamon sticks. Bring to a boil, then allow it to cool. Add the liter of liquor. Pour this into mason jars, put the lids on, and let it mellow out. You could drink it right away, but it gets better after a couple of weeks. Yields 9 quarts. Can easily be halved for a smaller batch.
12 ounces pears 6 ounces cherries 8 ounces apricots 10 ounces figs 8 ounces, peaches 3 tablespoons, powdered mustard seed 3 1/2 cups, sugar 2 cups white wine vinegar Keep fruits separated. Wash the figs. Wash the cherries and apricots and make slices in them to extract the pits; peel and cut peaches into quarters, removing pit. Peel, core and quarter the pears. Heat a quart of water in a large pot to simmer, slowly stir in the sugar. When the sugar has melted and the syrup is clear, add the pears. Five minutes later, begin adding the peaches, apricots, and cherries and figs, adding each new variety of fruit at five minute intervals. When you’ve added all the fruit, simmer the mixture for 10 minutes, then turn off the flame and allow the mixture to cool. In the meantime, heat the vinegar in another small saucepan, and stir in the mustard; then allow the mixture to cool. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the fruit from the syrup to sterile jars. Mix together the syrup and the vinegar mixture, pour the resulting sauce over the fruit, seal the jars, and store them in a cool dry place.
