SPECIAL
Gifts from the
ISLAND by Destiny Brown
This season, bring holiday cheer to your community by shopping and buying local! Give your friends and loved ones a treasure from the Island and something that is unique to the Gulf Coast. There are many galleries, boutiques and other retailers on the Island that carry special gifts that can only be found in this area. At a time of year where big box retailers offer deep discounts, this is an annual opportunity to show local businesses your support and a great way to score items while benefitting the local economy. Whether you’re shopping for jewelry, original art or browsing for that perfect present, the retailers at the beach invite you to shop local, and shop special. The Prosperous Pelican in Orange Beach is home local gifts that range from jewelry to pottery to watercolors and more. The store opened in 2002 and

has since been a venue for local and regional artists to display their work. “We began with seven local artists and by word of mouth and attending art shows, more local and regional artists began to add to our collection,” said Nancy Wright, owner of the Prosperous Pelican. The store is a gallery of local art and offers a variety of gifts that will only be found on the Island. New artists are always adding to the store's selection. For the Christmas season, painted Santa and sailor oyster shell ornaments by local artist Kathy McLauren are a big seller, but jewelry remains the most popular gift for the holidays. “I have 20 jewelry artists,” Wright said. “A lot of men buy for their wives during Christmas time and they know they can get a good price here on a fine piece of jewelry.”
The store specializes in unique stones and other gems and carries few gold pieces. Visit the Prosperous Pelican for your holiday shopping at 24823 Commercial Ave/ #4 in Orange Beach. Also, specializing in jewelry is Diamond Jewelers in Gulf Shores. Diamond Jewelers has been a local favorite for 70 years. The store specializes in diamonds and offers unique pieces that are special to the Gulf Coast. The store has been getting most of their diamonds from Belgium for more than 30 years and take pride in their variety of jewelry from silver lines to high end pieces. “When you walk in our door, it’s not like any other store,” said Stephanie Gatlin, assistant manager of Diamond Jewelers. “You feel at home. Our staff has been here a long time and we
make you feel like a best friend or a family member.” The store’s welcoming employees make it the perfect atmosphere for holiday shopping. Their biggest seller is top jewelry line, Pandora charm bracelets. “We carry Pandora, which is huge,” Gatlin said. “They are a great price point and the whole family can get involved in buying gifts for their loved ones.” Pandora carries many unique charms, but two that are exclusive to this store are the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach charms. “Those charms are as exclusive as you can get to the area,” said Jeff Goodman, owner of Diamond Jewelers. “It’s been such a draw when people are down here and see those. They are exclusive to our store. Since Pandora
is the number one jewelry line in the world, having those two charms has really done great for us.” From Dec. 1 to Christmas Eve, Diamond Jewelers will be running its Yule Tide with Yeti promotion. For your purchase, you can also get a YETI rambler, hopper cooler or tundra cooler, depending on the amount spent. “It’s a win win,” Gatlin said. “The guys come in looking for their wives or girlfriends and they can receive a piece of jewelry and something YETI. We’re excited about that because being in a fishing area, YETI is huge down here.” Diamond Jewelers has a variety of jewelry pieces that are original to the area. Visit the store at 108 E. 20th Ave. in Gulf Shores to get a special gift from the beach. December 2016 ● Beachin’ 11

Holiday PARTY Venues to celebrate with co-workers, family and friends by Destiny Brown
The holidays are a great time to host a get together for your co-workers and loved ones. Whether you’re throwing a Christmas cocktail party or looking for a place to welcome 2017 on New Year’s Eve, have the party of the year at one of the many venues at the beach that offer large space rentals. THE WHARF, ORANGE BEACH
The Wharf offers three separate venues to host your holiday party. With three different scenes and different accommodations, the rentals at The Wharf can cater to a range of partygoers. One of the most popular times to rent out a party space is the Christmas Lighted Boat Parade on Dec. 10. Groups book in advance to be sure they have a prime view of the parade. The venues also offer a choice of caterers and bartenders from the Wharf ’s restaurants so you can enjoy the party.
“We have several caterers here at The Wharf that can plan everything and have everything from sushi to prime rib,” said Sheena Mizell, Marketing Manager for The Wharf. “We also offer the option of using one of The Wharf caterers or serving your food and beverages yourself. “We only need an easy-toobtain insurance policy and we have bartenders and servers we refer out to help you with the serving. Our spaces can accommodate parties of 40 to 400 with great views of the water.” Groups can set up for their

party the day before and have until noon the next day to remove decorations. The Wharf is also already decorated throughout with its festive holiday lights. “We let the groups decorate the space any way they wish and The Wharf has a 30-foot Christmas tree and decorations all around the property,” Mizell said. “We have a special Spectra light show two times a night that is amazing.” With all of the activities surrounding venues at The Wharf, it makes the perfect location for a holiday get together. “We have so much to offer here at The Wharf with our ice skating rink, mini golf, the Breakout team building facility and our Ferris wheel,” said Mizell. “Holiday parties are the one time of year you can get to really know your co-workers. The Wharf is the one place where there is shopping, water front venues for the boat parade, and lots of activities that the whole group will enjoy.” The Wharf is also home to many restaurants that have enough space for large party dinners. 7 TIPS FOR HOSTING Before you swing into full party mode, there are a few things you need to keep in mind in order to have a smooth and well-planned get together. 1. Send out invites early Let people know about your party! If you give your guests a heads up, they’ll have the event marked ahead in their calendars and you can make sure you have a complete guest list. Be sure to book a venue that accommodates enough people.
‹THE GULF›
THE GULF, ORANGE BEACH
If you’re looking for an outdoor venue right on the water to host your holiday get together, check out The Gulf in Orange Beach. The Gulf can accommodate a large number of people in its large open air space. The venue overlooks the Perdido Pass and beyond that the Gulf and has an unforgettable, laid-back atmosphere. “The open landscape, beauty and flexibility of the floorplan makes The Gulf the ideal place for a family get together,” said Wiley Underwood, Assistant Marketing Manager for The Gulf and The Hangout. The Gulf recommends booking holiday parties in advance as soon as possible. They also provide decorations, caterers, and other special services needed to throw the perfect party. “We are happy to orchestrate all of the needs for the party,” Underwood said. “We also work closely with party organizers to ensure that all of their services are well executed. We will work with you to make your event just perfect.” Book your party in the evening and watch the sun go down on the Gulf, or book at night and enjoy the string lights twinkling on the water. The scenery at The Gulf provides the ultimate Gulf Coast evening experience. “The holiday season is a wonderful time to reconnect with family, and catch up,” Underwood said. “The Gulf is all about getting together with loved ones and friends, and relaxing in a beautiful setting. This makes it even better for large groups that can enjoy the various activities we have for kids as well.” For more information on booking your holiday event, email kimberly@thegulf.com. If you want to host something a little more low-key, there are plenty of restaurants and venues in the beach area that take reservations for large parties. Book your night out in advance to be sure everything goes as planned!
2. Have plenty of food Whether you’re bringing food in or having it catered in, food is key to a successful party. Keep your guests, and their bellies happy with a variety of snack foods and appetizers throughout the evening. 3. Prepare your drink menu Some venues allow you to bring your own alcoholic beverages while others have bartending services catered to your event. Either way, be sure there are plenty of options and plenty of variety in mixer and alcohol choices. It’s a good idea to also add some non-alcoholic beverages to the mix and keep waters stocked! 4. Decorations If you have a decorator, be sure they know what time guests will be arriving. If you’re the decorator, this is the perfect time to show off your holiday spirit! You also need to find the time the decorations need to be taken down, either after the party or the next day, so you can make arrangements for clean-up. 5. Get a musician or a playlist To avoid any silences, invest in a musician, a DJ or just plug in your IPhone to get some music going. Live music is also a way to get the crowd involved and many musicians can even perform holiday sing-a-longs. If making a playlist on your phone, be sure to add a few holiday tunes! 6. Prepare a few short announcements or a slideshow Let everyone know that you appreciate their attendance by making a statement about the purpose of the party and thanking them for coming! 7. Keep a cheerful holiday spirit A successful party is a stress-free party. Enjoy yourself!

Whether Traditional, Victorian, Country, Coastal, or a blend, enjoy making it personal! I’m often asked “What are the colors for this Christmas Season?” The simple truth is; What is your favorite thought for color this year? It will be the number one color for you, your family and friends!
Selecting a Tree
Real or artificial? Don’t give up your love for the look and scent of a real tree, just monitor dryness throughout the season. Thanks to the convenience and range of artificial trees, they can also take on the look of the real thing.

Pre-lit LED Trees
Save time and the effort of stringing lights with prelit LED lights. Place any tree on a timer so they glow on your own personal schedule
5
Crafty DIY Decor
If you’re crafty, try making an artsy tree from one of the following: • Reclaimed shipping pallets. For a rustic look, you can leave natural or you can paint according to desired design. • Plywood with a wood base and single support. Perhaps make three different sizes for a grouping. • Tree Limbs (2” or 3” diameter) placed on a dowel and rotated to different angles. All strung with your favorite ornament theme.
Create Depth
With any tree decor, create depth by layering ornaments beginning on the inside and working out.
Wishes for you and yours to enjoy a wonderfully blessed and joyful Christmas season! 16 Beachin’ ● December 2016

Use All of Your Special Ornaments
Wondering what to do with that box or boxes of hand made or hand me down ornaments? Perhaps you want to put up a choice of design that doesn’t embrace them? Simply put up another tree, size determined by number of ornaments, find that special location for it and Wha-Lah!
Add a Mirror
For small space expansion, invest in a floor mirror and place it behind your tree. This will create an expanded double look. It can become a welcomed addition of permanence to the living or bedroom area afterwards. Note: This can also be created by placing tree next to a glass door or floor to ceiling window (as in condos.)
Decorate a Children’s Tree
Using their personal favorite theme, decorate a small tree for the children in the house and place in their bedroom or play area.
9
Add Glitter!
Throughout your home, add glitter to anything! Deck the halls! The nooks and crannies! A little touch here and there will create festive and joyful emotions for all who enter!
10
Safety First Last, but most important! Throughout the holiday season, remember safety first. Don’t overload outlets and create a possible hazard for your family.

In addition, the Bellingrath Home is decorated in its holiday finery and enhanced with beautiful poinsettias. “This is a light show that has been specifically designed for the gardens,” said Dr. Bill Barrick, Executive
Director of Bellingrath Gardens. “It is fabricated by our maintenance staff and then we have a light crew that works on the show during the entire year.” Magic Christmas in Lights takes you on a two-mile stroll through the lit gardens. All of the set pieces are hand-made and installed by Bellingrath’s staff. “One of our scenes is the Emerald Forest. It’s a series of blue and green and teal lights in the live oaks. Kerry Parks & Dan Rush
Glassblowers
“Glass shops in the southeast are few and far between,” Parks said. “Dan and I are very lucky. We teach classes, we do production work with our own techniques and try new things all the time. We have fun.”
by Destiny Brown Dan Rush and Kerry Parks are rooted at the Coastal Arts Center. Dan Rush has been volunteering at the Coastal Arts Center for three years, and Parks has been at the Coastal Arts Center since 2013 and began full-time last year. Parks has been a part of the Gulf Coast for 17 years and says she was lucky to get this job. “Glass shops in the southeast are few and far between,” Parks said. “Dan and I are very lucky. We teach classes, we do production work with our own techniques and try new things all the time. We have fun.” The glassblowers teach many classes throughout the week, sell their art in the gallery and host field trips. They think it’s special to see the children’s reaction to the technique. “We do a lot of field trips for the kids and they are such a fun class,” Parks said. “They’re excited and inspired and seeing it for the first time, they’re mesmerized. It’s cool to share with little children and they think it’s such a cool thing.” Each artist uses different techniques and have different favorites when it comes to the colors they use. Throughout the shop, you’ll find a variety of pieces the artists have designed and completed for sale. “I’m a fan of bright colors,” Rush said. “All art, whether your painting or glass blowing, draws light and glass is such a great medium for that because the light bounces off of it, and can reflect it and the light and the colors play off each other.” Rush enjoys working with many colors together. Parks leads more towards a green and blue palette while creating her work. “Eighty percent of my work is all blues and greens and I think it’s from living on the Gulf,” Parks said. “Oddly enough, all the things I make live in the Gulf like turtles, jellyfish, dolphins, tentacles and mermaids. My favorite colors are the water so that’s what I make when I have time to do my own 24 Beachin’ ● December 2016
thing.” The pair recently completed two major projects within the city of Gulf Shores. “Recently, we did a big project that we spent all summer on for the Gulf Shores Welcome Center,” Parks said. “It’s 39 big spin out plate pieces that are on the walls where a lot of light comes through. We did all shades of blue, like the water and in the shape of the wave. We started with the dark cobalt and then the marine turquoise all the way to white. It took a long time and a lot of planning and designing and it worked well.” “We did about 50 so we could get the perfect 39,” Rush added. For Big Beach Brewing, the duo made four glass beer tabs that resemble a tentacle, a mermaid tail, a jellyfish and a crab claw. “I had never done those before so it was cool to figure out how to do it, but it was tedious to figure it out.” Parks said. “I didn’t get them all on the first try, I had to make several.” The process of glass blowing begins with a 2,080-degree furnace that is filled with molten glass. Parks calls the furnace “the heart of the gallery.” A stainless steel rod is then used to gather the glass from the furnace like honey from a jar. “We start with introducing a bubble to the glass and from there you can add your colors, then “frit” ( fresh cut glass in different sizes and colors,)” Parks said. The glass is then reheated to make any changes, and slowly cooled. “You can blow glass, sculpt glass, we do lamp working classes and use a torch, there’s a lot of things you can do,” Rush said, “It makes it fun because there’s so much to learn about glass itself and how to work with it. It’s a huge field. It’s a teamwork thing. There’s very little you can do by yourself.” Check out The Hot Shop at the Coastal Arts Center in Orange Beach. Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014
It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets 26 Beachin’ ● December 2016
very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.
Well worth a visit!

Moonfish
2016 Highlights
The 2016 fishing season has almost come to an end. The highlight of the year was the 65-day Red snapper season for Alabama state waters. This allowed inshore charter fisherman and recreational fisherman an opportunity to harvest some good catches over the summer since federal waters were only open 10 days for snapper. The highlight for December, especially for kids, is Christmas which is always full of surprises. Not to be outdone, the Gulf offers a variety of surprises in the fish that are rarely seen. Three of these are the moonfish, tilefish and barrelfish.
MOONFISH
While fishing around the nearshore rigs, we spotted large schools of oddlooking silvery flat fish. We were actually trolling for kings and Spanish mackerel when we hooked a moonfish. At first, it appeared to be a lookdown fish but the profile of the face was a dead giveaway. The moonfish are said to be edible but it takes some work to get a decent size filet off such a thin fish.
BARRELFISH
The barrelfish was caught while deep drop fishing on the Red Eye Charter boat with Capt. Gary Bryant.
Tilefish
Deep drop fishing has become quite popular with some of the offshore charter boats. The technical name is “Hyperoglyphe perciformis.” They are usually caught using electric reels in water thousands of feet deep. The barrelfish makes excellent eating with its white, firm, flakey meat.
TILEFISH
The tilefish, another highly sought after fish is also caught using the deep drop fishing method in thousands of feet of water. This Tilefish was also caught on the Red Eye Charter boat with Capt. Gary. The Tilefish is excellent to eat.
