That’s what Christmas is all about BY ALLISON MARLOW “Quiet on the set!” the young director shouts as cartoonlike characters buzz around him. Life is imitating art on stage at the South Baldwin Community Theatre. Children are giddy and dancing between the curtains. One young actress shouts, “I have to braid my hair!” and leaps off stage. Another follows her into the darkened, empty rows of seats. In the center of the ring of noise stands Young Artist Director Alex Campbell. With a smile and a wink he looks around at the children spread across the theater and teases, “If you think I won’t yell you are wrong.” Some roll their eyes, others giggle as they snap to their 10 Beachin’ ● December 2018

assigned positions on stage. Campbell is the director of A Charlie Brown Christmas, one of three teenagers tasked to bring the storied Peanuts characters to life. But unlike Charlie Brown’s problem plagued production, in this Christmas play the children have not just taken the helm but are producing and staffing the entire show with a professionalism that makes their mentors’ hearts glow. On stage, Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus — the entire gang — is portrayed, as Charles Schulz demanded in the original television special, by children. The sets behind them were built by children. The lights above their heads are being controlled by children. Even

the costumes and the interview for this magazine were handled in part, by children. But unlike the battered and worn Charlie Brown, when Campbell says, “cut” his cast is on cue. His crew moves like a well-oiled machine. He reminds them between scenes that by Nov. 15, “we are off book.” They nod in compliance. “We are all friends and I want to work hard for them and they for me because we are good friends,” Campbell said. “We have a talented and hardworking cast. It’s a great time.” Each year the theater offers two performances in their Young Artists Series. For the 2018 – 19 season those shows are Disney Aladdin Jr., performed in August and The Pied Piper of Hamelin, coming in May. While other productions through the year may include children in the cast, the Young Artists Series is intended for an all children ensemble. Frank and Brandi Wittman, the mentor directors for A Charlie Brown Christmas knew when 70 children auditioned for the 11 roles, a lot of kids would be left out. That’s when they were inspired by the Christmas television special they were about to perform. “We thought, what if we took it one step further,” Brandi Wittman said. “Peanuts never had any adults and that idea ties in really well.” The pair found mentors in each area of production to work with the students and then organized a job fair to interview interested kids for crew positions. Their adult mentors have taught them to operate stage lights, choose costumes, speak with the media and prepare the front lobby for opening night, among other tasks. Even the four-piece musical ensemble and the choir is completely composed of, you guessed it, children. “It’s been great. The kids have just jumped in and are excited to be doing this,” Wittman said. “We knew the older kids weren’t going to have a part because all the characters had to be kept around the same age. This way they still get to be involved.” 12 Beachin’ ● December 2018

The show is Campbell’s directorial debut and the seventh show he has worked on at the theater. He said South Baldwin Community Theatre’s willingness to hand the keys to the kids has helped to foster a growing love of theater in the younger set. “Sometimes kids can be swept under the rug by adults and you get the feeling that kid shows are less important than adult shows,” he said. “We want to show that kids can do awesome things. This program is inspirational.” Campbell said the Young Artists Series has helped to grow an entire community of kids who love theater. “This is a really good community that we’ve built,” he said. “It gives so many opportunities to kids to meet people and socialize and have a supportive community in their lives.” Wittman, whose own children have participated in the theater’s shows for years, agreed. “For these kids, their sport is theater and they need a place to do it,” she said. “What they learn here is astounding. The older kids take the younger kids under their wing and they work together to make this happen. “This is an awesome team, it’s just a different kind of team,” Wittman said. Back on stage, Marshall Egbert who plays Charlie Brown, wants to know the meaning of Christmas. The theater goes dark. A single light shines upon Linus, played by Joseph Huffaker. He holds the character’s easily recognized, blue blanket close and recites the Gospel of Luke. In the background a children’s choir practice the gentle, soothing sounds of the song, Christmastime is Here. Campbell said his crew aims to keep their presentation of the Christmas classic true to Schulz’s intent: to celebrate the true meaning of the holiday. “It’s not about commercialism but we get away from the true meaning in the whole mess of getting gifts and doing all that stuff in the rush of the holiday season,” he said. “We want to stay true to that message.” Merry Christmas Charlie Brown, indeed.

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014

It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets

very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

Décor on the Shore COASTAL CHRISTMAS TREASURES AND WHERE TO FIND THEM BY MARY MESSER

A

ccording to psychologists, holiday décor creates that neurological shift that can produce happiness, spiking dopamine - a feel-good hormone. Anything that takes us out of our normal habituation, the normal day in and day out signals our senses. Hopefully this article will bring encouragement as you create holiday joy for your family and friends. I thrill at the question, “Mary, will you help me with Christmas Decorations?” Tis my favorite time of the year! My thoughts turned to sharing with you some locations and resources in our area. From searching for an annual add-on for your 28 Beachin’ ● December 2018

already established Christmas decor to new beginnings. Hopefully you will discover places you may find your very own unique treasures.

LET’S START WITH THE TREE Nothing sets off Christmas more than the Messer scent of a live tree. One of my early childhood memories are of my sisters and I with Daddy traipsing through our lands searching for the perfect Christmas tree. Baldwin County is so blessed to have Fish River Trees where this childhood memory can be yours to share. It is actually an

experience within itself: from an amazing farm of live trees, to a raffle which supports Trees for Troops, Santa visits, free train rides and much more. This place enlivens the child’s heart in each of us. Several of the locations mentioned below offer artificial trees as well, which are wonderfully accepted into our fast-paced lifestyle this time of year. While spending a Christmas season in Germany, I became even more enthralled with the traditions created by my ancestral lineage like decorating trees with wooden ornaments and candle replicas of the original “real lit” ones, displays of nutcrackers, hanging wreaths and filling fireplace mantel stockings with yummy treats. While silver tinsel on tree branches is almost obsolete, it was first used to decorate Christmas trees in Germany as far back as 1610. Holiday decorating isn’t restricted to just red and green. Broadened color schemes are festive and refreshingly unique. Enhanced with lights, garland, ornaments, ribbons and bows, the list goes on and on. In the South, Magnolia leaves, pine cones and holly berries, along with cotton garland, sticks & wreaths, are often added to decorating ideas for trees, mantles, front doors, and mailboxes. Of course, on the coast we tend to add sea life to our Christmas decor. And don’t be skittish about hanging ornaments — even from a chandelier or two! Best wishes for a most joyous holiday season!

Listed are area locations that will surely help you fill your part of the world with wonderment from the outside to the inside, making every room look as festive as possible with jolly holiday decorating ideas!
