Foundation Board and Festival Committee The Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival committee is comprised 100 percent of volunteers that have executed the festival for numerous years. In 2016 the volunteers formed the Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival Foundation that is now a recognized 501c3 organization. The proceeds from the festival are used to award scholarships and donations to various groups in the Fairhope community. In 2017, nearly $20,000 in proceeds were awarded to area students and groups benefiting Fairhope.

Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival: Be a Part of the History! Welcome to the 66th Annual Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival. Can you believe how far our hometown festival has come? Not only is this festival widely known amongst the locals, but it is also known across the entire state of Alabama and recognized throughout America as one of the oldest and most prestigious art festivals in the country. Would you believe this cultural festival started more than 65 years ago as a tour? According to records held by the Eastern Shore Chamber as well as newspaper articles, the Arts and Crafts Tour started on Feb. 22, 1953 and lasted until Feb. 28. Back then, these seven-day art exhibits were set up in store windows. The tour schedule also included entertainment and craft demonstrations. Some artists and exhibitors did sell items, but the majority of the exhibits were for viewing purposes only. The tour was planned to coordinate with Mobile Jaycees’ Azalea Trail and Mobile Mardi Gras celebrations with hopes that the locals and visitors attending these festive events would also attend the tour and bear witness to the many talents of the Eastern Shore residents. The Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival has certainly changed throughout the years; the event is now only three days and held in booths on the streets instead of store windows, exhibitors are no longer only locals and charged an entry fee instead of commission on sales, the number of visitors is now in six-digit figures, awards, such as the Mary McGrath award, have been established, and the activities surrounding the festival have grown
as well. The most recent change has been the formation of the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Foundation, started just two years ago in 2016 by the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Committee volunteers. The Foundation takes opportunities such as the festival to give back to the city of Fairhope and residents by supporting arts in the community. This year, be a part of the history yourself and join other visitors as well as wonderful artists and crafters from all over the United States on the flower-lined streets of picturesque Fairhope as we promote artwork and craftsmanship, good will and festivity in the most charming and magical area of the world — our hometown.
Did you know?
The Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival has been awarded several times by Sunshine Artist Magazine as one of the top 200 festivals in the U.S. starting in 1997. Other awards include No. 10 in 2007, No. 26 in 2011, No. 2 in Alabama & No. 23 in the U.S. in 2013 and No. 9 this past year in 2017.
The Eastern Shore Arts Association The Eastern Shore Art Association was founded in 1954 by a group of local artists and art patrons who recognized the importance of art to a meaningful and full community life. Construction began that same year on a one-room gallery on the site of the former Pinewood Pottery Studio that had operated in Fairhope for over twenty years making functional ceramics from local clay. The Art Center (first dedicated in 1965) has continued to grow in that same location over the past 50 years to a facility that houses five exhibit galleries and four teaching studios. ESAC now includes among its activities the Annual Outdoor Art Show; monthly exhibits; quarterly classes for adults and children; monthly Art Walks; outreach programs for assisted living residents as well as programs for 10 2018 Fairhope Arts and Crafts
children and adults with disabilities and chronic illnesses; and extensive programs for both public art and arts education in local schools.

Poster Artist
The 66th Annual Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival poster artist, Linda Scott, has captured the charm and bustling life of Fairhope in her painting. “I think this painting represents the absolute charm of Fairhope. It represents the life of its people and businesses for all the residents and visitors to this lovely southern city,” said Scott. Although a native of Chattanooga, TN, Scott thinks of the Eastern Shore as home. “We couldn’t be happier here on the beautiful Eastern Shore,” said Scott. Scott was fortunate enough to study under local Chattanooga artists and has continued to attend various workshops in recent years. “My original medium was oil, then watercolors, and now I’ve fallen in love with the vibrancy of acrylics,” said Scott as this year’s poster art shows. Scott began painting as an outlet for creative expression but says that now she is excited to go to her studio to paint almost every day. And when it comes to the Festival and being chosen as this year’s cover artist, Scott is equally as enthusiastic. “I am still in awe and so honored to be selected

to create the artwork for this year’s festival. For the last 12 years I have been involved with the Festival: seven years as a committee chair, and the last five years as a participant,” said Scott, “It’s been an amazing joy for me to be able to give back to this community.” Posters, Prints and T-Shirts displaying Scott’s wonderful work can be purchased at the Festival Merchandise Booth.

Judges Adam Eikamp
Adam Eikamp is an artist and craftsman. He liked to doodle and make a mess painting as a little boy while building and flying model airplanes as a teenager. Adam worked in theming studios and art galleries at the beginning of his career. Always in discovery mode, this small-town Iowa kid now has his dream job. He values good art for technique, engineering, and emotional connection. Wood and paint are his primary media, but any material that works best for the art can find its way into a project. Adam graduated from Iowa State University and now lives and works in Dubuque, Iowa. Adam loves the exploration that comes with each new project and client. “Yes, it’s still work, but it’s my life.” Visit his website at www.eikampart.com.

Many artists would argue that the most coveted honor is when visitors stop by their booth and purchase their works. The Patron Award Program allows businesses or individuals to honor their favorite artists and craftsmen by committing to purchase at least $100 from one of the festival vendors. When they find that special piece and buy it, they present the artist with a ribbon and placard bearing their name or the name of their business. Patrons may purchase works from any exhibitor they choose and the money goes directly to the artist. For more information visit www.fairhopeartsandcraftsfestival. com.
