Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival: Be a Part of the History!
The first Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival was started/ formed in February of 1952 by Ms. Barbara Gooden, who was at the time the Manager of the Fairhope Chamber of Commerce and her good friend Ms. Gay Caffee. In Ms. Gooden’s own words, “I was trying to find something to pull in tourists. Gay Caffee and I decided on an art festival featuring local artists.” From there, the Arts & Crafts Festival was born and continues to grow to what we know today. The first years of the Festival featured local artists and crafters displaying their works in storefronts along Fairhope Avenue and lasted a week. By the late 1960’s, artists from outside of the area were invited to participate. In 1980, the sidewalk format for the festival was so crowded that the City decided to block the intersections to allow art displays to be set up in the streets and it was condensed to a three-day festival to be held after Mardi Gras on the third weekend in March. Ms. Gooden and Ms. Caffee’s original idea was to pull tourists over from Mobile that came to celebrate Mardi Gras and felt an arts festival would do just that. Little did they know what their “little” idea would become 67 years later. 12

The Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival has been awarded several times by Sunshine Artist Magazine as one of the top 200 festivals in the U.S. starting in 1997. Other awards include No. 10 in 2007, No. 26 in 2011, No. 2 in Alabama & No. 23 in the U.S. in 2013 and No. 9 in 2017. In 2018, the festival was ranked No.38 for the Sunshine Artists’ Best.
The Eastern Shore Arts Association Many people do not realize that the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival is actually made up of two separate shows. Now in its 47th year, the Outdoor Art Show hosted by the Eastern Shore Art Center is located north of Magnolia Avenue along Section Street, on Equality Street and on Oak Street in front of the Art Center. The show includes up to 125 booths of fine artists and craftspeople, attracting more than 350,000 visitors each spring. The Outdoor Art Show is a major fundraiser for the Art Center, allowing free admission to the public all year round.
Gallery and gift shop hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, visit www.esartcenter.org.
Festival Foundation
The Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival committee is comprised 100% of volunteers that have executed the festival for numerous years. In 2016 the volunteers formed the Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival Foundation that is now a recognized 501c3 organization. The proceeds from the festival are used to award scholarships and donations to various groups in the Fairhope community. To date, over $41,000 in proceeds have been awarded to area students and groups in the Fairhope community

Poster Artist The 67th Annual Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival Poster Artist is Georgie ‘Gigi’ Hackford. A local fixture in Fairhope for twenty years, Gigi says she was always an artist at heart. “My mother was an accomplished artist. When I was growing up my parents instilled in me the importance of visual beauty and its appreciation. Our first boat was called ‘Optical Illusion’. Mother always had her sketchbook with her and was constantly drawing and painting. My childhood was surrounded by visuals (my father was the creator of aviator sunglasses), and I would say my childhood was a charming visual experience and taught me to look for the artistic and beauty in everything.” Gigi has a M.S.Ed from Sarah Lawrence college. After a teaching career she became part of a group of street artists who would paint in front of Page and Palette. The group evolved to a gallery and eventually became the Fairhope Artists Gallery on Section Street. “I especially enjoy creating water scenes,” Gigi shares. “One first Friday Jodi Keating visited the gallery. She saw this painting, pulled me aside and whispered it would be perfect for this year’s poster. I

was humbled and honored. The offer was completely unexpected. “I believe art needs to be authentic and pure – it comes from somewhere deep inside of you. Although as artists we also need to make money, it is important to paint for more than the money. That is why I am so proud to have been chosen as the artist representing the Arts and Crafts fair this year. The art came from a deeper, truer purpose.” The Love of art. Posters, Prints and T-Shirts displaying Gigi’s wonderful work can be purchased at the Festival Merchandise Booth.

Patron Award Program
Many artists would argue that the most coveted honor is when visitors stop by their booth and purchase their works. The Patron Award Program allows businesses or individuals to honor their favorite artists and craftsmen by committing to purchase at least $100 from one of the festival vendors. When they find that special piece and buy it, they present the artist with a ribbon and placard bearing their name or the name of their business. Patrons may purchase works from any exhibitor they choose and the money goes directly to the artist.
