ust as Beachin rolls in waves and basks in rays of Alabama’s Gulf Coast, the areas of Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan inspire each issue with unique events, mouth-watering seafood and Southern dishes, apparel to suit beach bums and country clubbers. Jessica Jones This guide to the Gulf Coast offers insight into local restaurants, nightlife, attractions and events will ensure time well spent on Pleasure Island. First and foremost, the humid subtropical climate and white-sand beaches provide an oasis for guests. Don flip-flops and Hawaiian shirts or just a bathing suit. Spend hours of tranquility against a crashing-ocean wave backdrop with a good book, umbrella drink, or a completely blank slate. Dig toes into grains of sand, collect sea mementos or build sandcastles with the kids. Take a refreshing dip or dive into water adventures like parasailing, jet skiing or surfing. The area also offers family fun outings like the zoo, miniature golf, arcades, go carts, outlet, surf shop and boutique shopping. Whether you’re looking for a new cover-up or an evening gown, Pleasure Island’s got you covered. Souvenirs range from shot glasses to seashells—go ahead, make your friends jealous. Or let your inner child out to play with a day filled of bumper boats, foam machines, Tiki huts and waterfalls. Or perhaps Pleasure Island provides playtime for you and your sweetheart. Golf the gorgeous shores of the Gulf of Mexico with lush greens, a golf cart and two cold glasses of sweet tea or head for some relaxation built for two with a trip to the spa for couples massages. Maybe a tandem bicycle ride by the beach or late night stroll on the boardwalk is more your style. Perhaps fine dining and dancing... nothing says “I love you” like cracking crab legs and whisking away for a salty-sea waltz. Or, why not have it all? Rock out to beach-side concerts, get inspires at the Orange Beach Festival of Art, dig in at the Island’s annual Shrimp Festival and jump for moon pies with Mardi Gras goers. Whatever your taste, leave the itinerary at home and let Beachin’ be your guide to Southern hospitality, sandy feet and memories that leave you craving your next opportunity to Beach-it.

Zipping right along:

Gulf Adventure Center zip

line to open soon

By Lindsay Mott

The new Gulf Adventure Center’s hummingbird zip line hit a little bit of a snag late last year, but construction on the adventure-based addition to Gulf State Park started back in February and the Center is set to open early March. Center officials misunderstood what type of license was needed, according to a statement from Andrew Hudson, general manager, but this has been resolved and they are moving ahead with the project. Construction has been going on since October 2012, as the high towers for the zip line had to be added to the location. The Gulf Adventure Center is located on the Gulf highway with the beach front on one side and a large fresh water lake behind it on the north side. The center provides “outdoor adventures” through cycling and kayaking and paddle boating on Lake Shelby. The zip line is a course of approximately 1 mile of zip lines with towers ranging from 48 feet to 90 feet. Participants “zip” from tower to tower in a circuit while strapped in a harness and attached to the line. The course takes approximately two to two-anda-half hours to complete including a class that teaches a required skill set for the course. Every tower has two guides – one that catches you and one that sends you off to the next tower. According to Tom Schlinkert, managing partner, a number of the lines go over water and this is the only course in the country like that. According to Schlinkert, they call it a hummingbird zip line for a few reasons. “You will feel like a hummingbird, move like a hummingbird,” he said about the motion on the zip line. “Also, the Alabama Bird Trail is close by and the area sees a migration of them in August and September, so

they are paying homage to the ecology of the area.” Schlinkert said that he believes tourism on the Gulf Coast has ignored an entire paradigm that is seeking an adventure and educational edge when they visit. “I believe people want to learn something when they come here,” he said. “We feel that (the) consumer is out there and we have not been able to serve those people.” The Gulf Adventure Center and its zip line hopes to alleviate that and add an adventure option. The area around the center is still part of the Gulf State Park and open to the public. Many of the kayak and paddle boat tours will take visitors into Wolf Bay and other back water areas that some visitors rarely know are here, according to Schlinkert. “We view it as an educational, experiential and skill-building opportunity,” Schlinkert said. He will see the new facility as a success “if you leave the Gulf Adventure Center and say this was the coolest thing with the coolest people that we’ve ever done at this beach.” The Center is set to host Relay for Life on April 6 and offer the first ever Zip for Life during the night as well. The zip line course runs on a reservation system, sort of like a golf course, but he said people can walk up too. Barbecue and Blues Cook-off to satisfy foodies and music lovers By Jessica Jones

If March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb, then there’s plenty of room for pork and chicken, too, at least in Foley. March 16 will bring the Barbecue and Blues Cook-off with teams competing in chicken, ribs, just butt, sauce and anything butt categories. Leave white shirts at home and get ready for some finger-licking good food. There are several ways to enjoy the festival:

Cooking Teams

Teams can join the competition up until March 5; the $100 entry fee includes all competition categories and up to six team members (additional members may enter for $10 per member) along with six tickets to the Friday evening VIP party and two event T-shirts. Download the application at southbaldwinchamber.com. Teams may begin setup at 9 a.m. March 15 and should see the website for rules and further information on fire safety. Bragging rights as well as prizes will be awarded, so show off grandma’s best recipes or some of your own experiments with flavor. According to Terry Burkle, vice president of the South Baldwin Chamber Foundation, pit-master titles will be considered by a large judging team. “We have a team of approximately 30 volunteer judges,” she divulged. “Most of our judges (local folks) return year after year, we will have a few new judges atmosphere.” this year.” Guests can enjoy wafting scents of smoke, spices and seasoning, but they can listen to more than Guests sizzles from meat over the fire. Spring’s getting close…great month to get on the water. Just stay on top of the forecast and keep your equipment salt-water ready and your day could be one to remember. March holds some great chances to load up on some catches of one of my favorite fish. The Sheapshead start to stack up on the close-in gas rigs sometime in March. This month, the bay will be muddy, but the dirty water is often only 3 or 4 feet deep. Try all the near-shore rigs for some great fighting fish. Fish close to the legs of the rigs and stay on the bottom. Use fresh, dead shrimp, live shrimp, or fidler crabs. The crabs are the best to me, but everyone has their preferred bait. Catching these crabs can be the best part of the day. I try to catch an ice chest full so I only have to go after them one day a week. I hit Fort Morgan road near Gulf Shores Marina. You’ll find tall, thin grass near the Bay water. I then locate the crabs which may be in herds of hundreds. I’ll lay 2-by-4’s in a funnel shape ending in a 10-gallon bucket. Then I beat the grass with a stick and push the crabs to the bucket. As I am well over 60 years of age, I am sure that I present a comical image for the locals and tourist driving down Fort Morgan Road. I also use 1/0 circle hooks and braided line on a stout rod and good reel. These fish can run to 8 pounds often, and can go to 10. They fight like a bull dog and fry up like a snapper. Their nick name is Bay Snapper. Fish all around the rig as they will school to one leg sometimes, then move to the next one. Use a quality net to land them and be careful of the top fins. They can cause a serious wound. To clean them I find that fileting is best. Use a sharp quality knife to save you some time. If the Sheepshead are slow, there will be White Trout and Whitting around the same rigs. Both fish are easy to clean and taste great. The state is trying to put a limit on Sheepshead, so read the rules before you set out. The Whiting and White Trout don’t have limits. Catch all you need and eat all that you catch. This month can be a great month for Slot Reds, as well. There’s nothing like a 6 pound Red Fish, really angry with your gulp baits. Hit all the shallow water cuts, rocks, bulk heads and sand bars. Work the light house rocks

GulfVisitorGuide.com

as well. Fish all the boat launches, outside edges of the marina and Fort Morgan boat ramp area. If you want to chase Specks, try all the Eastern Shore rivers. Fish up river in the deeper water and any structure in deeper water. If it stays warm for a few days, try the three rivers area near Fort Morgan. The run off in these small, shallow rivers will be warmed quickly by the sun. Get there early and give your top water plugs a shot. You may be a little surprised. If you have a boat with a little substance, hit the Gulf and look for those early Ling-Cobia. Some come through in March and they will be hunting. All in all, March is a good month to fill your fish box. Stay on top of the wind forecast and tighten up your boat before hitting the Bay. As you know, Mobile Bay will hurt your feelings if you’re not careful. Towards the end of the month, Sheepshead will get in the canal and hang around the bridges. You have to get up close to the pilings. Watch your gel-coat. Use braided line and good lead to go straight down. Let me know when you go after the crabs. I’d like to watch someone else do it. Have a great and safe day. Know the laws and practice the rules of the water. Contact me, Capt. Don Holloway, at backbayfishingwithdon.com or 251-5505418.

On March 19, the Erie H. Meyer Civic Center will play host to “The Wedding Party,” an interactive dinner theater experience. City of Gulf Shores encourages public to report oil, tar balls By Grant Brown continued cleanup efforts could potentially

Recent concerns over the continued cleanup efforts resulting from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill have prompted the City of Gulf Shores to ask for help from its residents and visitors. “We are asking everyone who finds tar balls on our beaches to call the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802,” said Gulf Shores Mayor Robert Craft. “It is imperative that the public understands and engages in the reporting process that has been established to verify reports and activate all cleanup efforts.” While City crews continue to monitor beaches daily, according to Craft, the greatest priority for response is given to public reports and

hinge on the number and frequency of those reports. “To be sure cleanup efforts continue, residents and visitors should call the NRC to report oil deposits or tar balls found along our coast,” said Craft. “While oil washing ashore is minimal, it is still a concern that it not be allowed to accumulate over time.” While recent tourism numbers and the appearance of clean beaches has been encouraging along the Alabama Gulf Coast, Gulf Shores officials recognize the threat of additional deposits washing ashore and understand the importance of having crews nearby to respond. “We don’t want to become naïve to the potential threat that still exists,” said Craft. “Keeping our beaches clean is our highest priority and having continued, long-term support from the U.S. Coast Guard is vital for us.”

These photographs, taken in July 2010 after the oil spill, show oil that washed up on Orange Beach. While most of the oil has been cleaned up, there are still small deposits that wash up on shore.

Swift-Coles Home hosts Edie Lamotte Berner art exhibit By Paula Tillman

Beautiful works of art by local artist Edie LaMotte Berner will be on exhibit at the Swift-Coles Historic Home, located in Bon Secour, through March 29. The exhibit will display a variety of pieces from Berner’s acrylics, figures, pastels and southern reflections galleries.

About the Artist

Berner was born and raised in western Kentucky, where she began the study of art at the age of 12. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in studio art and art history from Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., which included studying art abroad in Europe, Spain, Mexico City and San Miguel Allende. She later earned her Master’s degree in studio art from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. Following her formal education, Berner taught art in the public and private sectors for more than 10 years. Her art is influenced by her early study and travel abroad, especially from the expressionist and fauvist movements. She uses pastels, acrylics and oils to express use of colors, landscape or figures to create complex and abstract compositions. She has three children, four grandchildren and she and her husband divide their time between Alabama, Pennsylvania and Sweden. Currently,

Berner’s work can also be seen at the Patina Gallery in Fairhope, Bottlebrush Gallery in Pennsylvania and at Brooklyn Southern in Brooklyn, New York.

The Swift-Coles Home

The Swift-Coles Historic Home is located at 17424 Swift Coles Lane, Bon Secour, and is open every Tuesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (last tour is held at 3:00 p.m.). to thinking about it. The thought consumed her until finally she decided to give it a try. Peggy, who had been driving a city bus in Salisbury, N.C., gave Reta tips on how to drive and how to make turns on a tight corner in order to pass the test at the bus company. After applying for the job as the first woman to drive for a large national charter bus company, she was hired. Her first trip ran from Mobile to Fort Walton. It was fun, challenging, and a little scary; she loved traveling and meeting interesting people as well as going to many interesting places. Some of her favorite drives were to Washington D.C., Williamsburg, Va., and Branson, Mo. She said driving a bus was exciting for her, but not easy. She quickly learned, as a female cross-country driver, what sexual harassment was all about. At that time, people did not identify such inappropriate behavior as sexual harassment, and many considered such behavior as the norm. Maintaining her dignity and standing up for what was right gave her a reputation as someone not to mess with. She gained strength from her experiences, and this strength carried her through life. She proudly bragged that she never missed a trip – always fulfilling every assignment. When the time came, she refused to join the union, but continued to demand a fair judgment. In 1993, Reta retired and life slowed down. In 1996, missing her daughter, grandson and son, she moved to Foley. Still not close enough, in 2009 she started looking for a place on the Island. Coming from a large family, she missed the family ties she had enjoyed while when she was growing up. She wanted to be part of her children’s lives, and part of her grandson’s life as he grew. Her grandchild, Kyle, is now attending Auburn University. Finally, in 2010, she moved to Gulf Shores to be closer to her daughter, her son, and the beach, of course. Living here, folks learn to love the Gulf and enjoy the white sand of the beaches. Each day at lunch, her daughter stops by to

Reta Smith visit, and they share a meal together, and each evening on her way home her daughter stops again. She says she wouldn’t want to live ANYWHERE else. She loves the outdoors. She stays active by walking about three miles a day, fishing off the beach or a pier and loves catching flounder. She enjoys cooking fish, deep fried or broiled. She also loves making memory bears. She started creating memory bears when she bought a teddy bear at a yard sale for ten cents. She obtains clothing or some item to use on the bear from a person who has lost someone close to them, and Reta makes the bear to help keep the person’s memory alive. In any spare time that’s left, she enjoys quilting. It’s all about therapy and food for the soul. It’s all about doing something nice for someone that you may or may not know, she says. On top of all of that, she loves living ON THE ISLAND, and we love having her here.

All fans will enjoy access to extraordinary amenities including: the comfortably shaded relaxation area, Hammock Beach; the Sky Bar tower, which offers 360-degree views of the festival; a plethora of amusement rides and games; varied dining options in the fresh Alabama Gulf Seafood area; and water stations with free refills for all guests. Big Kahuna pass-holders enjoy all of the above, as well as on-stage access for many performances at the main stage; and headliner-status transportation. Gulf Shores offers a wide range of accommodations, from luxury to budget to family-friendly, many within walking or biking distance of the site. Lodging and travel packages are available on the website, as well. Festival attendees are strongly urged to avoid traffic by taking advantage of the easy and fun way to get in and out of the festival, the Hangout Music Fest. Due to overwhelming demand, the Golden Shuttles will be back and offering even more exciting prizes than last year.

Manatee Sighting Network to hold naming contest for tagged manatee By Jill Clair Gentry

Few people who live on the Gulf Coast are aware of the presence of manatees in Alabama’s waters, and even fewer realize they have an opportunity to officially name one.

Manatees in Alabama?

The Dauphin Island Sea Lab’s Manatee Sighting Network has been researching manatees in Alabama since 2007, and through tagging technology and consistent reports of sightings, researchers have determined that Mobile Bay is a big part of this endangered animal’s habitat. So far, research shows Alabama’s manatees live near Tampa Bay during the winter months and move into Mobile Bay for the summer. “Not a lot of people know they’re around here,” said Allen Aven, a Ph.D. student at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. “But we definitely know Mobile Bay is an important summertime habitat for manatees because we are seeing the same individual animals return here ever year, making the 405-mile trip from Crystal River, Fla.” The researchers at the Manatee Sighting Network believe Mobile Bay is important to manatees because of its access to freshwater streams and the abundance of food — aquatic plants like turtle

How you can help: The Manatee Sighting Network and the Alabama Marine Mammal Stranding Network rely on locals and visitors to be their eyes and ears. •

Report Sightings immediately, even if you see the same group of manatees every day. To report a manatee sighting, call 1-866-4935803.

Boat with caution. Stay 100 feet away at all times.

Don’t feed, water or touch. Manatees are federally protected, endangered animals.

Help financially by purchasing Manatee Sighting Network gear, buying a MSN license plate or making a tax-deductible donation. You can do all of this online at www.manatee.disl.org.

grass and water hyacinth. Although manatees live in salt water, they must drink fresh water every few days, Aven said. Manatees should only be in Alabama from May to mid-November, said Ruth Carmichael, founder and director of the Manatee Sighting Network. If they are here during colder months, they risk sickness and death from cold stress. Boating accidents are also a huge threat to manatees, and MSN hopes its research will raise awareness among boaters about the presence of manatees in Alabama waters. “Obviously if people aren’t aware that the animals are there, then they can’t do anything to try to prevent that,” said Elizabeth Heib, manager of the Manatee Sighting Network. “We’re a little different from a strictly advocacy group because we’re mainly interested in the animals and what they’re actually doing here and what they’re relying on here, but ultimately, a lot of this will be used in conservation. We get the data, do the research and then hand it off to the advocacy and conservation managers.”

Aug. 13, 2012, Ph.D. student Allen Aven attaches a belt and satellite tag to manatee TMA006 (Serge), who was captured in Dog River.

The Manatee Sighting Network is the only formal manatee sighting network in the U.S., and it conducts the only manatee research in the northern Gulf of Mexico outside of Florida. It is currently monitoring five tagged manatees. “But we have one manatee who doesn’t have a name yet,” Heib said. “Basically, when they capture these animals, they have a photo identification database. manatee is given and number and is catalogued by their photo. But when you’re working with even five animals and trying to remember which number is which — names work much better. The unnamed manatee is a male, 9.5-foot animal that was captured in the Delvan Bay area in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. He spent part of the fall in Wakulla Springs, Fla. before moving further south to Crystal Bay, Fla. for the winter. Because the Manatee Sighting Network relies on the public to report manatee sightings and to be cautious when boating, the MSN researchers decided to give people the opportunity to name a manatee. The naming contest is also a fundraiser. Between now and April 1, with the purchase of an MSN T-shirt, a Tacky Jack’s gift card or a taxdeductible donation, anyone can enter a name into the contest. Visit www.manatee.disl.org to make your purchase and submit a name. The staff will narrow the names down to a group of finalists, and April 10–17, MSN’s Facebook fans will vote for the winner. The winning name will be announced on Facebook and at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab’s annual Discovery Day, April 20.
