After months of cold weather and empty beaches, it’s finally time to welcome back the season of sunshine and sunscreen: the spring. This means more live music at venues on the coast, more seafood specials at beachside havens and of course, visitors that seem to outnumber the grains of sand. The promise of fun in the sun draws students of all ages from across the country to our Gulf sands during spring break. This time of year brings a boom to the local businesses, but those busy days and nights — along with the traffic — may leave some wishing it were back to the slow-as-molasses winter months. But with travelers impressed with the white beaches, the acclaimed seafood and the constant fun, locals can’t help but get a sense of pride when they get the chance to reply with, “I live here.” I’ve had my share of the seasonal slump, and even if it means a little more (or a lot more) traffic, I’m welcoming the spring with open arms. It’s that time of year when spring breakers replace snowbirds and the snow days are replaced with sandy, sunburned days on the beach. I’m headed to there to get a spot.

The Wharf Boat and Yacht Show anchors in Orange Beach
By Destiny Brown
T
he Wharf Boat and Yacht Show, the largest in-water display of any boat show along the upper Gulf Coast, returns to Orange Beach and is sure to lure in boat owners and boat lovers alike. The event will kick of with a special VIP “Stars over Alabama” red carpet preview on Thursday, March 27 at 2 p.m. Guests are welcomed with a red carpet, champagne, photo ops and are invited to see the show before it opens to the public. “It’s really a fun afternoon, and it’s a way to kick off the weekend of the boat show in style,” said Chris Miller, operations manager of The Wharf Boat and Yacht Show. “So get dressed up, come out with your friends, find the hot deals and see what’s out there in the marine world.” Marine artist Larry Rackley will provide kids’ art classes during the red carpet preview so parents can enjoy the show. Organizers of the display expect more than $90 million in boats and marine products to be in the show this year. “That includes custom order Back Bay Skiffs, the hottest off-shore Viking Sportfish and everything in between,” Miller said. “We’ve got more than 125 boats in the water and we’re getting close to 250 boats on land. We’ve got some of the hottest new boat lines, the best dealers and the top brands. There’s a little bit for everyone. Nowhere else can you go and see this wide of a variety of the top brands in the country.” Most of the boat show is supported by local dealers from Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Displays from Viking, Bertram, Contender, Jupiter, HydraSports, Everglades, Yellowfin, Edgewater, Tiara, Sea Ray and more big names in the boating world will be showcased, and prospective buyers are welcome to test-drive the boat of their dreams. Every type of vessel will be shown, ranging from luxury yachts and sport fishing boats to center consoles, cruisers, pontoons and runabouts. Boat retailers will also have a variety of pre-owned boats for sale. In addition to the water sports, this year’s event will have an air component. urday, March 29 with the idea to coincide with the boat show. “By air and by sea is kind of what the weekend is focused around,” Miller said. The airport will have airplanes and different exhibitors that will tie in with the boat show at its field. “There will be Cirrus Aircraft on property in the middle of the boat show. Cirrus Aircraft is the leader of private aviation sales in the world right now,” Miller said. “They’re on top of their game and they’re a great asset to have here at the boat show.” Although the show focuses on the marine industry, it will also feature unique apparel companies, artists, stand up paddle boards and other water sports, ATV’s, high end custom golf carts and wave runners, outboard and inboard engines, fishing equipment, the hottest marine electronics, fishing tackle and outdoor equipment. “Not all of it is 100 percent boating,” Miller said. “It has a boating focus, but also shows a little bit of a well-rounded side of the marine and accessory side of the industry.” With its floating in-water wet slip marina and central location,

Miller says The Wharf is the best place to host the boat show. “The Wharf is by far the best venue in the South for this type of show,” Miller said. “Everything about coming to the Wharf is the perfect formula. It’s really easy for the companies exhibiting here to get their product here, and it’s easy for them to fly in, drive in, however they want to get in.” “It’s a very affordable area to come to so it’s great value. Having the parking, the facility, all the restaurants and things going on on Main Street, along with people being able to stay here in the condominiums, there’s really nothing else like it.” Because the boat show is the week of The University of Alabama’s spring break, Miller expects a larger turn out than last year’s event. “We’re really looking to a much higher attendance level than last year because last year it was the last weekend of April,” Miller said. “People are looking to buy their next boat and want to have that done early in the season so they can have it on the water in the month of April.”

Wild Bill brings
the heat
to the Gulf Coast
Bill Howard is bringing a different kind of heat to the beach. Leaving wing lovers licking their fingers, Wild Bill’s Wing Sauce has spread locally and is working its way onto wings and drumsticks everywhere. Howard admits the creation of the sauce was an accident. “About seven years ago, I had a restaurant in Gulf Shores and we were always experimenting with wings,” Howard said. “People said they were tired of the same thing I was, which was usual sauces that are made with pepper, name brand sauce and then adding oils and fake butter to change it. They all ended up tasting the same, so I was trying to do something different.” Howard began a search for the perfect wing sauce and found a favorite from a restaurant in Atlanta, Ga. When he attempted to make the sauce, the copy cat recipe didn’t work out as planned — it was better. “When you copy things, normally it’s not going to work out for you and it didn’t at all,” Howard said. “It didn’t work out to what I was trying to copy, it turned into something totally different. It turned into something classically original and what we now call Wild Bill’s.” Bottling was never a plan, until friends and fans of the sauce began suggesting it.
“I really just got tired of the same thing,” Howard said. “If you read on the back of other bottles, it’s soy bean oil, canola oil, butter, alternative flavoring and things like that. I just went a different direction.” The only thing artificial in Wild Bill’s Wing Sauce is the artificial color, and Bill didn’t add any butters or oils. The sauce is made from full-bodied, vine-ripened cayenne peppers with vinegar, tomatoes and a special spice blend. “Our flavor is classic original, which is a little bit less than your normal market hot,” Howard said. “If people like it hotter, this is a good base. I have some ways to change it if people want it hotter.” Howard wanted to keep his products manufacturing in-state as much as possible and found co-packer Kyleigh Farms in Chancellor to help with the mixing, pouring and bottling. “We should be spreading quickly into other states,” Howard said. Currently, Wild Bill’s Wing Sauce has been distributed to 17 states. “The hardest part is getting it in people’s hands — getting people to taste it and truly to figure out the best place to get audiences.,” Howard said. “ The more people you

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2010
It was a beautiful summer morning when we left Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and getting a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissatisfied with the last few attempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideration our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on time to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beautiful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a little chicken after the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, after that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condition her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep conditioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of motion, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer
gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the conditioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condition our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all times our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. After we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and conditioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-the-counter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. After shampooing and before conditioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, putting any conditioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. After she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bottle. Anyway our cuts cost us $40 each, best money we ever spent and yes we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.
Well worth a visit!

I’m glad to see March get here. It gets a little warmer this time of year. I love it, trout love it, shrimp hate it. Trout should be on the spring move looking for good food and warm, salty water. March is also the top water lure time of the year. Unless it gets warm quickly, I would try all the lower ends of the creeks and rivers that you fished this winter. After that, I would move to all the inland reefs that are closest to rivers. The prime bait for these areas is live shrimp under popping corks. Other than shrimp, try plastics in both shrimp and bait fish. One really good spot this time of the year is the deep water in mooring areas off Mobile Bay. Live bait and plastics will work here as well as top water. Try the top water around or near all the pier pillings and/or rock walls. Red fish will hang around these areas as well. If you fish the lower end of creeks and rivers, never pass up those small shallow creeks, as they will hold some great trout in the deep parts of the creek. If the banks are two to three feet deep and the channel is four feet, then the deepest part of that area is a great spot for fish popping corks and top water. Trout will be at the south end of Mobile Bay this time of the year as well. During mid to late March and most of April, try the Fort Morgan Point on the beach due south of the fort. The water has less current than on top of the sand bar and holds bait fish and therefore may hold specks. Pompino may also be there as well as ground mullet and whiting. The mid-bay lighthouse and surrounding channel markers may work as well. If you are unsure where to fish, start at the mouths of the creeks and rivers and expand your search from there. Don’t ignore the canal as it holds trout in the spring as well as some serious sheepshead. The bull reds will be on the Dixey Bar, as well as black drums and even cobias or kings. If you fish for trout, I would use a popping cork with a split shot under that with a small swivel, all on 10-pound test main line and some real clear and flexible line in the 15-pound test range. Trout have some sharp teeth and the line will break off. Be sure to have a landing net on board. Gaffs may come in handy, but please don’t gaff bull red fish, cobia or kings. They may not be of legal length and if gaffed they will not survive. All of our local bait shops and marinas should have live shrimp and some will have small live crabs for the sheepshead. If you fish for them, you’ll need to be up close on some serious pillings, like under the bridges on the canal or under the gas

rigs on Mobile Bay. I try to scrape off some of the growth as soon as I get there for chum. Wherever you may fish, be sure to always know the laws and rules of the road. The Marine Resources Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has a tide calender that also has fish limits and legal sizes. Rules of the road are just good behavior and common sense for boaters. Always watch your wake and don’t litter. If I can help in your fishing plans in any way just call 251-550-5418. Stay safe. Q&A with CMT’s
Ryan “Daddy” Richards

By Destiny Brown Fans know him by his party lifestyle, his southern charm and of course, his beer funnel. Ryan “Daddy” Richards, Orange Beach local and CMT superstar, stars in the first season of CMT’s newest series, Party Down South. Daddy gives us a look into the reality TV world with his thoughts on the fun in the house, the friendships made and his future plans for a reality TV career.
Q:
How did you get the nickname Daddy?
I’ve been called Daddy pretty much my whole life. It’s the reason I say it so much. I’m addicted to saying Daddy. I’m bad with names, so I call people Daddy a lot and I throw it on the ends of names. It’s just one of those things I’ve always done. I earned the nickname Daddy and people will call me that everywhere. My own mother even calls me Daddy.
A:
Q:
How were you selected to be on CMT’s Party Down South? It all started probably three years ago when I went to my first casting ever. I had some friends from L.A. and went and met them, and from that point on it just blew up. I had multiple calls to be on different shows, and I made friends with the casting company. Three years later, they called, and next thing I was in L.A. and next thing I was in the house.
A:
Q:
Was it difficult being in a house with that many people? No, it wasn’t at all. There’s more than you see there, and what I couldn’t believe the whole time was that there were eight of us in the house, but there’s really a lot more in the house at all times. There’s lot of production walking around the house and people ducking and diving trying not to get in the way of the shot. Right when I got there, production told me “Whether you know it or not, you’re going to become a family and we’re all going to become a family,” and I remember sitting on the floor that day thinking “Yeah right.” But they were right — I do consider those kids my family and that production company my family. I love all of those people.
A:
Q:
Did you ever have second thoughts about the show and want to leave? No, not one minute did I ever want to leave the house. I was upset when we wrapped it up and I had to leave the house. For me, I wanted to stay another month. It was so much fun. If you like to party like I do, that place was like Disney world to me. A non-stop blast.
A:
Q:
What were some of your favorite things to do on the beaches in Myrtle Beach, S.C.? My favorite thing probably to do there was the Marsh Walk and how close it was to the house we lived in. I mean, there’s a string of bars that are just walking distance from us, so I love that atmosphere. It kind of reminded me of Orange Beach, the place I’m from. It was a beach town and just a lot of stuff going on.
A:
The cast of CMT’s Party Down South
Q:
How do its beaches compare to our beaches?
They’re very similar. In the episode of Lyle’s birthday, when we got to go out to the Point, that was one of my favorite days because that was something that I would do on a normal weekend down here. We would get on a boat, everyone goes to Robinson Island and parties, and for me, that day particularly felt like home.
A:
Q:
Did you develop friendships on the show? Did anyone get annoying? There was absolutely nobody in that house that got on my nerves. I was different from all those kids — we had three Louisiana people in the house, and then we had Murray and Walt, who were country boys. I was the only beach kid in the house. Being around different personalities, I laughed at everything they did because I had never seen that before.
A:
Q:
What thoughts did you take home with you after being on Party Down South? The best thing I got out of the experience was the friendships I made there. 100 percent.
A: Q:
How did your friends back home in Orange Beach react to you being on a reality show? They think it’s hilarious and they’re not surprised about anything they see on there because everything I do there I do here in front of them, so they laugh at it.
A:
Q:
Do you have any future plans to further your reality TV career? I want to keep doing Party Down South. I would love to do this five more years. If it’s not in a party house, I’m really not interested in reality TV. The only thing I want to be in is a wild party house — I really don’t want to do any other kind of television because it’s the only thing that interests me.

By Jessica Jones For 40 years, the Orange Beach Festival of Art has been our city’s first rite of spring — and this year, you can expect even more artistic wonders, stunning performances and family fun. The Orange Beach Festival of Art is set for March 8 and 9, and will feature more than 100 local and regional fine artists of visual, performing and culinary arts. The Festival is a fine arts, juried event held every second weekend in March on the grounds of the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach and Waterfront Park on Canal Road. Festival hours are Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is completely free with public parking located at The Wharf. Shuttles will be provided at a rate of $2 per way, to and from the festival. No public parking will be available on site.
With more than 100 artists working in a dazzling variety of mediums, festival-goers always have plenty to see, hear, touch, taste and smell as art vendors, musical performers and artist demonstrations deliver a multitude of sensory experiences. Visual artists were specially selected for this show and present only the highest quality art in their respective mediums. Works in acrylic, oil, watercolor, glass, pottery, wood, jewelry and more will be displayed and sold during the event. Selected musicians will include Roman Street, Sugarcane Jane, Three Bean Soup and Brent Burns. Performing artists in multiple genres will be included in the lineup. For a full list of performers, visit the festival website at www.orangebeachartsfestival.com. Sunny 105 FM will also hold a remote broadcast during the festival. With no winners or official times, The Color Run celebrates healthiness, happiness and individuality, bringing the community together to create a five-kilometer canvas of colorful fun in which thousands of participants are doused from head to toe in different colors at each kilometer. “We call The Color Run the ‘happiest 5K on the planet’ because our events bring together friends and family in a unique, healthy and fun environment,” said Travis Snyder, founder of The Color Run. “Our only rules are that people wear white and prepare to be covered in color at the finish.” Demonstrating the beauty of motion and change with its new 2014 Kaleidoscope Tour, participants will experience novel course attractions, fresh gear and new store merchandise. Whether it’s new runners experiencing their first 5K or seasoned athletes remembering what it feels like to run for fun, the Kaleidoscope Tour promises to be an unforgettable event filled with 5K magic. The Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Sports Commission (GSOBSC) hosts this event along with the City of Orange Beach and The Wharf. Beth Gendler, the GSOBSC’s vice president of sales, says The Color Run is distinct in that it eliminates the pressure of competition and adds variety to the selection of athletic events along Alabama’s beaches. “The Color Run allows anyone the opportunity to have a blast while developing a healthy lifestyle,” Gendler said. “Wellness is something we strive to promote in everything we do as an organization, and we encourage beachgoers and locals to embrace this concept and participate in this colorfully fun event.” Participation in and buzz for The Color Run has

exploded since its debut in 2012. It has more than 2 million "likes" on Facebook and more than 8 million views on YouTube. In addition, The Color Run has been recently featured on ESPN, Runner’s World, Sports Illustrated and the Wall Street Journal, to name a few. In 2012, The Color Run visited more than 50 cities with more than 600,000 participants, a feat following its first event in January of that year. On the heels of that success, 2013 was a monumental year, launching more than 170 events with more than 1 million participants. “Color Runners,” as they are called, vary in demographics and reasons for running. With no winners or official times, The Color Run caters to anyone — firsttime runners to professional athletes. More than 60 percent of Color Runners are first-time 5K runners and participate as a celebration and capstone of their healthy living accomplishments. Additionally, The Color Run, a for-profit company, values the opportunity it has to partner with charities to help shine a light on their work within society and highlight the causes they stand for. Part of the proceeds from the Orange Beach event will benefit the Coastal Baldwin Education Enrichment Foundation, which is dedicated to meeting the needs of the public schools in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach by providing scholarships for graduating seniors as well as educational and programming enhancements for all local public school students.
