Hello there, February is one of the more “easy going” months here at the beach. The restaurants aren’t at their summer capacity, and the beaches are clear for a scenic walk. We are in the midst of Snowbird season here at the beach, and it’s not hard to spot a license plate from a northern state. Keeping northern visitors entertained with happy hours, lunch specials and freebies is something the beach gets better at every year. Treat your sweetheart to a special Valentine’s Day at one of the beach’s many romantic venues. Make a reservation for a four course dinner or simply take a date at a low key seafood spot on the bay. Mardi Gras comes to an end this month, but not before it goes out with a bang on Fat Tuesday. Don’t miss the parades happening on the Island and “Laissez les bon temps roulez.” If you’re already getting into spring break mode, trim off those holiday pounds with the help of the local fitness venues at the beach. Check out the different exercise classes and choices offered to our winter visitors and locals all around the Island. I’ll see you there in my beach chair (and maybe a jacket,)

of the first steps to any healthy lifestyle is to keep active, and how can you do that if you never give the effort? There are professionals and teachers available that will guide you through a smooth workout. “A few tips before beginning a new class are to arrive a few minutes early, speak to the instructor and be familiar with the class format,” said Stephanie Christi, co-owner of MOXIE Lifestyle Fitness Studio in Gulf Shores. MOXIE is a studio dedicated to group exercise and offers workouts for all levels, ranging from beginner to advanced. For each class, an instructor leads the workout for a more safe, effective and complete workout. MOXIE offers spin classes, yoga, pure barre and more. The exercises are completed to upbeat music that provides the fuel needed for a fun workout. “Taking things slow in the beginning is necessary, but that should not be used as an excuse not to push yourself,” Manjone said. Our bodies are capable of much more than we often give them credit for. When you begin to use your body in new ways, you will be amazed!” If you have any medical issues, talk to your doctor before beginning a new exercise program. Another important factor on maintaining a healthy lifestyle is your diet. “Eating healthy begins with a healthy relationship with food,” Christi said. “Eating healthy also involves creating healthy habits, you may have to address emotional reasons/beliefs that have been preventing healthy habits.” Exercise has proven to help many medical issues. disease and blood pressure are a few common health problems helped with frequent exercise “There are so many diseases that can be prevented and healed through diet and exercise and it is time for us to make our health our responsibility again,” Manjone said. “Alabama has one of the highest rates of Type 2 Diabetes. The good news is, we can change that. The best place to start is by taking a really good look at each and every thing you consume: read the labels and question its origins. You only get one body, treat it like a temple!” The options to live a healthy lifestyle are endless, and just waiting for you to discover them. Participate in local yoga class or find a favorite walking trail on the beach. Challenge yourself at the CrossFit gym or attend a group class with music. With finding the right workout, you can have fun being a healthy, new you.

tips for staying on track One of the biggest problems people seem to have with leading a healthy lifestyle is staying on track. Here are a few tips on how to keep motivated throughout the year. 1. Involve your family and friends “No matter what your motivation is, try to involve your whole family,” Manjone said. “There is no need to make one meal for yourself and another for your spouse or children. Being healthy should and can be a way of life for your family. Do you live alone? Share your plans with friends who are also interested in making a change. Share recipes with each other or have a pot luck once a week. 2. Preplanned meals and snacks “Failure to plan is a plan to fail,” Manjone said. “It is imperative that you take the time to plan out your meals and prepare food in advance. Try to take a few hours each week to roast veggies, bake chicken for lunch salads, and write out a menu for your week’s meals. Keep healthy snacking options on hand like hardboiled eggs, raw veggies, and nuts. The more you do it, the easier it will become and you will soon realize that this is something you can stick to all year round.” 3. Accountability “Another great way to stay motivated is to create some sort of accountability,” Manjone said. “For example, this month we have a nutrition challenge going where each day you get points based on your diet and whether or not you worked out. The points are logged on a giant white board hanging on the wall in our

GulfVisitorGuide.com

facility. You are much less likely to binge eat all day knowing everyone will see how you did!” Tell your friends and family what you are doing. Use a tracker like MyFitnessPal and connect with friends. If your goal is weight loss, nutrition plays a much larger role in the equation. Do not fool yourself into thinking you can exercise off a bad diet. 5. Set small, achievable goals. “Don’t set yourself up for failure. For example, instead of setting a goal of beginning an exercising routine of 50 minutes a day, begin with 15 minutes per day and gradually work up to 50 minutes,” said Stephanie Christi, co-owner of MOXIE in Gulf Shores. “Remind yourself that extreme measures cannot be sustained and long lasting changes in diet and lifestyle require patience.” 6. Find something you enjoy doing! “Wellness isn’t a bout a one size fits all,” Christi said. “Learn about your body and seek out what works for your amazing body. This is key to successfully meeting your goals.” “Identify what or who motivates you (plug in your favorite playlist or go to your favorite instructors class to get moving.)” Do not set yourself up for failure by telling yourself you must be perfect. No one has a perfect diet or works out every day. “Focus on how your healthy choices make you feel rather than the number on the scale. Most importantly, stick with it. When you wake up in the morning feeling energetic, it will be all the motivation you will need!” Manjone said.

City of Gulf Shores continues tradition of

Mardi Gras Parade in 2016

The City of Gulf Shores is excited to announce its expanded role as lead organizers for the Gulf Shores Mardi Gras Parade. This history of the Gulf Shores Mardi Gras parade dates back to 1978 when a group of locals decided Gulf Shores needed a parade. Those locals formed the Pleasure Island Players and thus Mardi Gras began in Gulf Shores. A year later the Mystic Order of Shiners joined the Pleasure Island Players to become what is now the oldest parading order in Baldwin County. In 1984 Judy Kaiser volunteered and joined the parade committee as a member of the Mystic Order of Shines. For the last 31 years she has worked diligently to cultivate a successful event and long standing tradition in Gulf Shores. When the time came to choose her successor Kaiser chose the City of Gulf Shores. Kaiser explained the city has always participated with the parade and had a good working relationship with the committee. “Over the years the City’s events program has 20 Beachin • February 2016

grown and they put on quality events,” she said. “31 years has been a lot of fun and I will continue to volunteer and be a part of the parade.” Kaiser has been named the Grand Marshall for the parade in honor of her service and years of hard work. “It really touched my heart,” said Kaiser who further expressed her excitement and gratitude for the opportunity. “We’re happy to carry on the long standing tradition of the Gulf Shores Mardi Gras Parade,” said Mayor Robert Craft. “This family oriented parade has become a favorite of residents, children and winter visitors,” he said. “We look forward to continuing it in the years to come.” The Mardi Gras Parade will take place on February 9 at 10 a.m. Anyone interested in entering the parade can do so by registering online at www.gulfshoresal. gov/mardigrasparade or by contacting Erica Bassett at 251-968-1434. The deadline to register for the parade is January 28. GulfVisitorGuide.com

Capt. Mark‘Who’s askson the Island?’

Seeing as this will appear in the February “Valentine” issue, I thought I’d write about two people that have been happily married for many years. After checking with a few friends, it was unanimously agreed upon that I should talk to my old friend Elmer Jarvie, a wonderfully classy, and talented, gentleman who has been married going on 63 years. With a grin that lights up a room, he says, that if he could turn back the clock, he’d do it all over again. Elmer first saw daylight on his grandmother’s farm in Bellaire, Michigan on May 18, 1929. Back then, people couldn’t afford doctors, so his mom drove 90 miles down to his grandmother’s farm in a 1929 Whippet when it was almost time to deliver. Her mom was a midwife, and his mom was comfortable going there for help. Elmer was the third oldest in a family where he had 11 siblings, each was born approximately 14 months apart. In 1935, his dad had saved enough to buy a small farm located about 8 miles from Rudyard, Michigan. Elmer remembers walking 1 ½ miles to school from first grade until the eighth grade. The children carried their lunches in the old gallon tin cans that had originally been full of peanut butter (a bit of memorabilia). He said that often his toes would be freezing by time he got to his one room school. His teacher would take their shoes off, pack their feet in snow, and then put the children near the wood burning stove to let their feet slowly warm up. At 14 years old, Elmer went to work at a gas station. The money he earned went into the family kitty to help with costs. He had a special chauffeur driver’s permit to drive the GulfVisitorGuide.com

gas truck out to the farms to fill their tanks with gas and/or diesel. The farm was a blessing to the family. As children, they learned to share. They learned responsibility, and to be accountable for their actions. Their mom baked 9 loaves of bread every other day for the family. He remembers getting up at 5 a.m. and going out to help his dad milk the cows. They survived the depression in tact by growing their own vegetables (storing them in the cow bins in the barn), getting the milk from their own dozen or so cows (selling the cream from the milk), and getting eggs from their 300 chickens. They sold the eggs and occasionally a chicken or two in his uncle’s store in town. High school was tough for Elmer. Between doing his choirs, working a part time job at the gas station, and finding time to study his homework with only candlelight to see his books, he still managed to graduate with honors. From high school, he went to Michigan State and graduated with a degree in education to teach Industrial Arts specializing in woodworking, and working with metal. While at Michigan State, Elmer met Junia. She was a freshman and he was a senior. Elmer was a dorm counselor and the dorm sponsored a dance. He saw this “gorgeous woman” who was there with her date. Junia says it was a blind date someone had fixed her up. A week later, Elmer called her. He saw her at the dance, but she hadn’t seen him. She kept turning him down for a date till she got tired of him asking, and said yes to shut him up. When she agreed February 2016 • Beachin’ 30

to go out on Saturday, he’d ask her to go out on Friday also, just to tie her up on date nights so no one else could ask her out. One of his courses was ROTC. Upon graduation, he had to serve out his two years commitment to the Army, and was told to report immediately to Fort Bliss, Texas. While Elmer was there (Junia’s junior year in MS), she came down to Fort Bliss, Texas, and Elmer and Junia were married May 20, 1953 in El Paso. Elmer laughs when he remembers that before Junia left Michigan, Junia’s mom gave her $100 just in case the marriage didn’t work out and she wanted to come home. She still has the $100 stashed…just in case. While in the army, Elmer was a platoon leader. He was sent to Korea and then up on the 38th parallel, but didn’t see any action. From there to Japan as a Mess Officer, and then a PX officer. After the army, Elmer went back to Michigan to teach, but after 14 years he’d had enough. Having grown up on a farm, he soon went back to his roots, and started raising baby pigs. He had about 30 sows, and 300 piglets. He remembers on the extra cold days he would bring the pigs in the house where they could sleep next to the heat registers to keep warm. Occasionally he’d go out and sleep with them so he could keep an eye on them. After raising pigs and barely making a living, he went to work for E.W.Bliss where he worked 12 years making heavy duty presses for industrial plants, mostly from the Auto Industry. He also worked making up the service manuals for the presses. The foreign competition for the presses was immense. Japan, Korea,

and other foreign countries had companies that could produce presses so much cheaper that it put E.W. Bliss out of business. Deciding he’d done that long enough anyway, he applied to the Post Office to be a rural Mail Carrier, then a clerk, then promoted to Postmaster where he served the community for the next 14 years. After retirement, Elmer and Junia decided to make a trip down to Key West. After discussing it, they decided to stop in Gulf Shores to see some other friends that had retired to Sailboat Bay. While waiting to leave Michigan, they spotted an ad in their local Michigan paper for a rental at the townhouse condominium, The Sand dollar, for $500 a month. They came and liked it so much, that they started checking around to come back again. They rented at the Phoenix the next year, and each year a different Phoenix as it was being built. In 2002, they decided to buy here and stay. He loves the area and became very active at the United Methodist Church. He volunteers his talents at the church and you cannot walk in there without seeing his work. He’s 86 this year and says he has slowed down some, but still never says no when asked to help. Junia plays bridge twice a week, and they both eat lunch 5 days a week at DeSotos, their favorite restaurant. His favorite thing to do is to sit out on his deck, enjoy the sunshine, and smoke a good cigar. How very fortunate we are to have Elmer and Junia on the Island, and how fortunate I am to be able to call them my friends.

hooked on fishin’ with Phil Dortch

For years, people have used a variety of methods, some quite creative, to lure game within shooting range. Probably one of the most popular is the modern electronic calls, but hand and mouth calls are also very effective. The Robinson family, better known as Duck Dynasty, has made a fortune making duck calls. Predator calls for coyote, fox and bobcat are a growing sport. Deer hunters use grunt calls and rattling antlers in hopes of killing that monster buck. I guess you’re wondering by now, what does this have to do with fishing? Actually, in a practical sense, all the afore mentioned techniques are considered “attractants.” This is big business to a hunter. However, in the world of fishing, it’s known as “chumming.” Like with hunting, there are a variety of methods, depending on your target species of fish. For instance, the best way to entice stubborn Sheepshead to bite is to use a long handle floor scraper blade and scrape barnacles off the gas rigs or local piers. This will often ignite a feeding frenzy. A great way to catch Spadefish is to catch a Cannonball Jellyfish, thread a wire thru its body and hang it over the side of your boat. Cut pieces off the Jellyfish to use as bait. This type creature does not sting. Many years ago, I lived in Jacksonville Florida. We would buy cans of dog or cat food, punch holes in the can, attach a string, hang it off a pier at night around lights and use a cast net to catch shrimp. If there are King Mackerel in the area, tie your boat to the rig and cut up small pieces of pogie or Croaker. Better yet, use a “chum churn” which is a pvc device about 4-inches around, with a blade inside to chop up the bait and release small pieces into the water creating a chum slick. The same can be accomplished with chopped fish in a bucket with holes drilled in the side and hung over the side of the boat. You can also purchase frozen blocks or bags of chum. There are various chumming gadgets on the market. If you have ever watched a shark fishing TV show, chumming is done by hanging lots of scrap fish over the side causing a slick. 36 Beachin • February 2016

With all that being said, probably the most ingenious method of chumming I have ever witnessed was done by one of my fishing buddies, Larry Kling. We were offshore Snapper fishing when he dragged out a large plastic tub filled with what looked like mud. Not wanting to appear ignorant, I kept bottom fishing, pulling up small snapper. Before long, he was catching huge snapper only 20 feet down. My curiosity finally got the best of me and I blurted out “What in the world are you doing?” His response was, “I’m using a Chum Ball.” So in case you have never tried such a method, he was gracious enough to share his secret recipe which was learned from fishing in the Florida Keys years ago. So here we go.

CHUM CHURN RECIPE: (Not to eat) Purchase a plastic tub about 2 feet by 1.5 feet and 6-8 inches high. Buy a 25 pound block of frozen Menhaden. GulfVisitorGuide.com

You must have an electric or hand cranked meat grinder. Defrost the block of Menhaden and grind. Get ready for quite a smell. Masonry fine sand. Beach sand is too coarse and will not mix properly. Start the mixture by putting about one inch of chum in the tub with 6-7 handfulls of sand. Mix thoroughly. The mixture must be such consistency so that you can make a softball size ball, toss it into the air and catch it without it breaking apart. Continue the process until all the chum us used. Next, put your tub, filled with the chum mixture, in the freezer until ready for use. To use, thaw. Take alewives bait or half a cigar minnow, hook it, then make a softball size ball of the chum, packing it around your hooked bait. Use a spinning reel. Trip the bail, ease the bait ball into the water, (do not toss it) allowing it to sink slowly while stripping off line by hand. You can measure the depth the ball will sink as you pull line off the reel. When the chum ball reaches the desired depth that you see fish on the depth finder, trip your reel bail closed and quickly jerk the line. This will break the chum ball apart, causing a smelly slick and expose your bait and hook. Hang on for a bite. It will be necessary to have a bucket of clean water nearby to wash your hands before handling you reel. You may start out fishing 50 feet or more, depending where the fish are, but gradually you should be able to

catch them possibly near the top because they will tend to follow the scent trail. An option for determining how deep you bait is going would be to load your reel with color coded line. This line is a different color every 5 or 10 feet. Another option is to install a line counter on your rod. Fishing with a chum ball works best on a slack current. Free line with no weight. Let it naturally sink. Hopefully, we will have a decent Red Snapper season this year. Be aware of the 9 mile state water change instead of the previous 3 mile limit. My understanding is that this only applies to Reef Fish and only when that species is in season. Always best to check with Marine Resources before going. Here’s a new little twist on pan frying fish. Mix one egg, a little buttermilk, a little mustard. Coat fish filets. Roll in a dry mixture of Panko and Zatarain’s New Orleans Style Fish Fry. Skillet fry in a little olive oil till done. Place cooked filets on a wire rack, not paper towels which causes the bottom to be soggy. Enjoy. Remember to obey the rules and get home safe. Teach a kid to fish and create memories that will last a lifetime. For more info contact Capt. Phil @251-223-3682 or Email ISLANDWESTCHARTERS@YAHOO.COM or WWW.ISLANDWESTCHARTERS.COM or see me on Facebook.
