Take a boating adventure

photo by Chase Brown The waters of the Gulf are special for many reasons. It’s one of the main attractions that lure visitors from all over to our beaches, and it’s one of the things the Gulf Coast takes the most pride in. For your next beach adventure, see the water from a new view; on a boat. Take a charter boat out to catch the big one, sail out on a 53-foot catamaran or take control of your own vessel and test your balance on a paddleboard. Whether it’s for sport or relaxation, there are many businesses at the beach that want to show you a new view of the water that people from all over come to experience. If you’re looking to catch the big one(s), take a deep sea fishing trip and make an unforgettable beach memory. Captain Bobby Kelly takes his boat, Miss Brianna, out for any party looking for the complete deep sea fishing experience. Located at Zeke’s Landing in Orange Beach, Capt. Bobby is one of the charter boats that offer day trips for a fun adventure with your friends and family. Before beginning the trip, Capt. Bobby likes to ask a few questions to his customers. “First thing we do is talk about their idea for the trip such as how many fish they want to catch, if they’re worried about keeping them, etc.,” Capt. Bobby said. “We have some groups that just want to catch and release fish, so it’s nice to know that beforehand so we can try to accommodate the best we can.” Capt. Bobby recommends his parties have a love for fishing (as most trips last a minimum of four hours), but to be prepared to reel one in. “Unlike ponds and lakes, a great thing about deep sea fishing is that the fish usually congregate in one spot so we 10 Beachin ● May 2016

know where they are,” Capt. Bobby said. “They’re going to be at a spot around a structure and we know how to target them.” The catch of the day usually depends on the government regulations of the season. “Due to a lot of government regulations, there are a lot of season openers and closers,” Capt. Bobby said. “If people want to take fish home, we need to target a fish that is in season.” Red snapper season is the most popular time of the year for charter boat fishing. The season opens June 1, and this year is expected to be a longer season. To make your experience even more enjoyable, there is a Big Green Egg grill located on board. Capt. Bobby invites you to bring any meat you would like to be grilled, just give a heads up so the crew can prepare. Snacks, food and alcohol in moderation are also allowed on board. “We have a beautiful fleet here at the marina and everyone is a hard working professional,” Capt. Bobby said. “Nothing is ragged or disreputable.” Capt. Bobby and his mates are dedicated to make sure you have a first class experience. You can now book your charter straight from the website. There’s even a calendar available so you can see what’s available and book your charter then and there at www. gulfshoresfishingcharter.com. You can also visit Gulf Shores Fishing with Miss Brianna for more information. If you’re looking for a less intense boating experience, take a sail boat tour out on the water. Wild Hearts sail boat gives passengers a memorable experience aboard it’s 53-foot catamaran sail boat. Sail Wild Hearts is located across the street form Perdido Beach Resort at their dock on the north side of Perdido Beach Boulevard in gulfvisitorguide.com

Orange Beach, AL. “Sailing is something unique,” said Debbie Sims, public relations, marketing, advertising and booking for Wild Hearts. “It’s a way for people to be outside, but not just be laying on the beach. As opposed to having a loud motor like most boats, the sail boat makes for a quieter and more relaxing boat ride.” The quietness of the sail boat also gives customers a better chance to see wildlife on the water such as manta rays, dolphins and turtles. Wild Hearts offers sail adventures ranging from sunset trips to kayak adventures to morning dolphin cruises. The earliest cruise, the morning dolphin cruise, begins at 10 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday during the time dolphins are the most active. The two-hour cruise is a morning adventure that is a great start to the day for the early birds. The kayak sail begins at 1:30 p.m. and is a three-hour adventure equipped with paddleboards, kayaks and snorkeling. Guests will sail to an island where the beach fun awaits on the sand and in the water. Guests are encouraged to bring beach gear such as towels, sunscreen, etc. “We even have a couple of rod n’ reels on the back to catch and release fish,” Sims said. “People seem to really like the thrill of reeling them in.” The sunset sail is a breathtaking experience for sailors. The trip begins at 6 p.m. and offers a prime time view of the magnificent sunset that we have here on the Gulf Coast. Wild Hearts also has special Dolphin and Blue Angels Sail sail that will occur later in the year. During the daytime sails, the Wild Hearts crew sells soda and has complimentary water during the trip. For the sunset sails both soda and water is complimentary. Refreshments are also served during the sails. Guests are welcome to bring

coolers along for any trip, but the crew recommends leaving behind glass. Bottles of wine are acceptable. “We have heard from customers that they think our sail is everything they wanted at a great value,” Sims said. “The boat is very comfortable with cushioned seating, but you don’t have to sit down on the boat the whole time, you can walk, move around or even lay out in the sun.” For rates and to book your sails today, call or 251-981-6700 or visit www.sailwildhearts.com. If you want to be your own captain, try out a paddleboard or a kayak on the water. There are many businesses on the water that offer rentals for less than an hour or the whole day! The bay, freshwater lakes and even the Gulf are popular locations at the beach where people either rent or bring their own paddleboard or kayaks to go out on the water. Keep in mind that the waters on the Gulf are rougher than freshwater and the bay. Lake Shelby Water Sports at the Gulf Adventure Center in Gulf Shores invites both beginners and experienced paddle boarders and kayakers to glide on the waters of Lake Shelby. “Freshwater is a calmer environment for beginners,” said Lake Shelby Water Sports, “You’re still in site of the beach, but without the rough surf and rip currents in the ocean.” If you’d rather kayak with a partner, most businesses offer double kayaks. If you’ve never paddle boarded before, no worries. Guides are on hand to give you instructions before you go out on your own. Book a dolphin cruise or if you’re more of a risk taker, sign up for a parasail trip. A boating adventure will help you discover the beach in a new way. With so many options in the area, be sure to make the most of your time near the water. Whether you’re looking for a thrill or a time to relax, the beach has just the boat for you.

The Hangout Music Festival 2016 Where Hwy. 59 ends and the party begins Thousands of music lovers are drawn to the beaches of Gulf Shores every year for a three day festival in the sand. This year marks the seventh year that The Hangout Music Festival has been hosted at The Hangout in Gulf Shores. With an extraordinary beach backdrop, multiple stages to choose from, and a variety of vendors, this ultimate beach festival is one you don’t want to miss. The festival, which organizers call “Disney World for music lovers”, takes place on Friday, May 20-Sunday, May 22. The lineup was announced early to showcase big name headliners (Alabama Shakes, Florence and the Machine, Lenny Kravitz, The Weeknd, and Calvin Harris) alongside criticallyacclaimed indie artists (ie: Jason Isbell, Haim, and Leon Bridges). Hangout Music Fest began post BP Oil Spill, to showcase the healthy, thriving Gulf Coast. The event has grown tremendously; last year over 40,000 people

gulfvisitorguide.com

attended, infusing $31 million into the local economy. Unlike other music festivals, Hangout has no mud, campsite showers, or unrelenting heat. Hangout Music Fest is downright luxurious, with stages situated on white powder beaches, beachside bars and dining, poolside viewing areas, shaded lounges, and more. Most attendees spend up to a week in Gulf Shores to experience a beach vacation and the Gulf of Mexico’s many aquatic offerings (swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, birding, etc.) Tickets and packages for The Hangout Music Festival vary. Attendees looking to splurge can spend up to $1,599 on Super VIP Packages for gourmet meals prepared by James Beard Award winning chefs, air conditioning, hot tub viewing areas, golf cart shuttle services, complimentary drinks, and more. At first her life is happy, but news arrives that her father has died and her fortune is lost. Sara is forced to become a servant, scrubbing cobblestones and washing cooking kettles. She must live in a miserable attic room that seems no better than a prison cell. When a mysterious gentleman from India takes the house next door, some strange and curious things begin to happen. In time, Sara even discovers that her fortune has been retrieved. The enchanting story is filled with fascinating characters, both good and bad: greedy Miss Minchin and her timid sister, Amelia; Becky, the kitchen slave; snooty and jealous Lavinia; and Ermengarde, who hates to read and can’t spell. There’s even a Hindu servant named Ram Dass, whose monkey is always up to mischief. You’ll never forget Sara’s birthday scene, nor the odd tea party she conducts in the cold attic. This show is filled with comedy, drama and, most of all, charm. When things turn out splendidly for our clever Sara, it’s no wonder she feels just like a little princess. 251-968-6721, www.sbct.biz

Food, Fun and

Music at LuLuPalooza By Destiny Brown destiny@gulfcoastmedia.com

gulfvisitorguide.com

This Memorial Day weekend, head down to LuLu’s in Gulf Shores for some family fun and bands in the sand. On May 28, LuLuPalooza will celebrate its 10th year at LuLu’s. The day is filled with food, music and events for the entire family. Throughout the day, 4,000 people are expected to attend LuLuPalooza. “LuLuPalooza began in 2006 with an idea from Johnny Fisher,” said Gabrielle Barnett, marketing and communications manager for LuLu’s. “The idea was to have a great Memorial Day and bring something special to guests. It also became a great way to highlight a few of the up and coming artists and bands in the area.” LuLupalooza is known to bring in well recognized bands also, which is the main thing that draws people to the festival. “Ultimately, what brings most people in is the music,” said Mike Butler, general manager at LuLu’s. “It’s a perfect spot to hang out. A great property with plenty of room.” Bands performing this year are Sauce Boss, The Mulligan Brothers, and George Porter Jr & His Running Pardners. Sauce Boss is a blues guitarist who actually cooks gumbo onstage throughout his set. He has a shout out in a Jimmy Buffet song and is sure to add entertainment to the day. The Mulligan Brothers and George Porter Jr. will play until 9:30 p.m. Another special addition to the festival is a book signing by the “crazy sista” herself, Lucy Buffett. She will be signing her new cookbook beginning at 1 p.m. at the restaurant. WABD will be on site for a live Remote and will be giving away prizes. There will be plenty of games, including the ropes course and arcade. Munchkin mountain, the new ropes course for toddlers, will also be open. “ People will really enjoy the atmosphere, the fun, the music,” Barnett said. “It’s a great place to kick off your flop flops, relax in the sand with a jet ski killer and listen to the music while enjoying your memorial weekend.” May 2016 ● Beachin 29

Many fisherman express a difference of opinion as to the best way to do certain things pertaining to any phase of the sport of fishing, regardless if it’s catching, cleaning, cooking or a host of other topics. One thing is for sure, there is usually more than one way to accomplish the task at hand. One topic, less discussed, is how to get the fish on board once it’s hooked. Ask any fisherman and they will agree that the biggest one they ever caught got away at the boat while trying to get it from the water to the ice chest. Some choices are a gaff, net or boga-grip. With that being said, let’s look at different fish and ponder different ways to successfully land them.

Cobia

May is a good time to catch cobia, also known as ling or lemon fish. They migrate from Florida along the Alabama beaches traveling as far as Texas. Many remain in the area all Summer into early Fall before returning East. Once they are hooked, the fight is on. They often bite live eel, pogies, croaker or even some artificial baits if you’re real lucky. Now comes the challenge of actually getting one on board. Last year, we lost three at boat side all due to attempts using a gaff. Therefore, the question arises; which is better, a gaff or a net? There are pros and cons for either. If you stick a green cobia with a gaff, you better have a plan. One person to hold the rod, another to hold the gaff and quickly sling it on deck and yet another to knock it in the head several times with a bat. Seriously, they will literally tear up a boat if not brought under control. The legal size limit is 33 inches min fork length and bag limit is two per person. It is often impossible to accurately determine legal size when the fish is thrashing around in the water, so there arises the potential problem. No one wants to gaff and kill a shorty. Now we have the option of using a large deep net. While the fish is still hooked in the water, carefully lead it’s head into the net and bring it on board. Some people contend that when caught in a net, it has a calming effect. A large net takes up lots of space if on a small boat, but could possibly be the safest option in case a release is required.

King Mackerel

King mackerel should be in abundance since the water is well above 70°. We generally gaff kings because of their razor sharp teeth which creates a mess when tangled up in a net. Once again, be aware of the size limit which is 24 inches min fork length and two per person. If you suspect one is too small, 38 Beachin ● May 2016

very carefully bring it on board for a measurement.

Bull Reds

Bull reds, also known as red drum should not be gaffed. Their scales are like guitar picks plus they are the breeding stock for future generations. Not only that, a 20-25 pound bull red will yield a surprisingly small amount of good meat. Use a large net, boga-grip or gently lift it from the gills. Quickly take a photo and release.

Spanish Mackerel

Spanish mackerel are fun to catch, but are too small to gaff and easily get their teeth tangled in a net especially if you are using treble hooks. They are usually small enough to just lift into the boat.

Red Snapper

Red snapper should be brought aboard using a net to avoid injury to the fish. Since the limit us probably only 2 per person, handle the fish responsibility in case it is to be released. A gaff should never be used on snapper. Remember to obey the rules and get home safe. Teach a kid to fish and create memories that will last a lifetime. Capt. Phil at 251-223-3682 , islandwestcharters@yahoo.com islandwestcharters.com. Also on Facebook.

It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. gulfvisitorguide.com

Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!
