Luke Bryan, Thompson Square head south for the winter By Jessica Jones

The Wharf amphitheater’s first show of 2013 will be a March appearance by Luke Bryan, Thompson Square and Florida Georgia Line. Bryan’s tour, Dirt Road Diaries, began Jan. 17 and will reach the Gulf Coast at 7 p.m. March 14. But he’s no stranger to Alabama’s music-loving audiences. The country star performed at BayFest 2012 in Mobile and delighted audiences with his performance and light-hearted personality. The 36-year-old father of two is known the songs “Do I” (2009), “Country Girl” (2011), “Drunk on You” (2011) and “Kiss Tomorrow Goodnight” (2011). Albums include “Tailgates & Tanlines,” “Doin’ My Thing” and “I’ll Stay Me.” During December’s American Country Awards ceremony, Bryan earned nine awards: Artist of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Single of the Year, Male Single of the Year, Music Video of the Year, Male Music Video of the Year, Most Played Radio Track and Most Played Radio

While the air waves and iPods seem full of tunes from this country boy, he admits that live music holds a special place in his heart. “I always dreamed of coming to Nashville and putting music out that drove people to come to a live show and join in the live show experience,” Bryan said during the Luke Bryan Farm Tour, according to his website. Bryan’s energetic, hit-filled live show was filmed before 14,000 of his closest friends at one of his Farm Tour stops in Athens, Ga. and was aired by the Great American Country (GAC) channel. As the tour’s charitable endeavor, proceeds from the Farm Tour went to college scholarships for students from a farming family within the communities the tour played. Ticket prices for his upcoming tour, Dirt Road Diaries, are $45.25 for general admission, $35.25 and $45.25 for reserved seats. Baldwin County Heritage Museum held its Annual Angel Memorial Tree lighting on Dec. 9, 2012. The St. Markâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lutheran Church handbell choir performed before the lighting ceremony in the museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1908 church building. This building was donated and moved to the museum by St. Markâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lutheran Church in 1988. Inside the main museum, visitors enjoyed refreshments, touring the Christmas Tree Display and the musical talents of Robertsdale High School band member Brandon Williams. If you were unable to attend the Open House Christmas Celebration you still have time to see the Christmas Tree Display. The Trees will be on display until 2013. Wow, it’s been a great year for me. January’s here and it’s time to start again. This would be a good month to start your ledger of fishing days. Just keep track of when you catch what and include the weather info as well as bait and tackle used. Hard to remember all this stuff as the years go by. This will provide you with loads of information when it comes time to plan a day of fishing. I’ve heard so many people say “It’s called fishing,” and that it’s okay if we don’t catch fish. I agree with that, but to me, it’s better if we do catch fish and just release them. If you plan and know what you’re doing you can increase the number of days that you do catch fish. January is another one of those months during which most people are controlled by the weather. Strong winds, cold fronts and rain has kept plenty of boat ramps empty. That can be changed. Just pick a different fish to chase, dress warmly and use wind/rain proof top coats. I fish the near shore or inshore gas rigs this month for Sheepshead, White Trout and Whiting or Ground Mullet. I use small live Shrimp, dead Shrimp and cut bait on the bottom most of the time. The gas rigs all have structure bunched up around the legs so you don’t have to get in real tight to them. Next time, tie up as close as you can and fish straight down. Let your sinker hit the bottom and then crank up enough to get the bait close but not on the bottom. Your bait will be more exposed to a strike and you’ll hang up less often. Small Trout and Whiting can also be used as bait for the large Red Fish that cruise our bay in the winter looking for food. White Trout are great to fry. Just scale the small ones and fillet them. Leave the skin on. The larger ones can be filleted and skinned. Whiting and Ground Mullet should also be filleted and skinned. Have a good net ready as the Sheepshead will range to 10 pounds or more. A great fight and a real treat at the dinner table. I use a large knife to fillet and skin them. The Sheepshead bite is light so you must pay attention. The Trout and Whiting are easier to hook as their bite is more aggressive. Large Red Fish can

still be caught on the Dixey Bar. You’ll do good to try bottom fishing at anchor with cut Mullet for bait. A chum line will help, too. Keep in mind that you’ll not only be fighting the fish but you’ll also have to fight the tide. You may pick up some pompano in the surf on warmer days. Speckled Trout will be up most of the eastern shore rivers still. The key is to fish at or near the bottom and fish really slowly. On Fish River, I’d run almost to Highway 32 and fish back using live Shrimp and plastics with a slip cork on one rig. I’d also be throwing plastics or shrimp to the bank, all piers and bulk heads, stumps and any other structure that I could find. Red Fish have to eat, too, and they should be in good numbers on the river. The larger Bull Reds will be there, also. Be ready for a long fight if you hook one of them on 10 or 12 pound test line. Just watch the boat traffic and you’ll able to tell where most of the fish are being caught. Lots of traffic on this river so be careful. Also be respectful of the home owners on the river and wave with your hand, not your boat. I’ll fish often on Bon Secour River this winter. It’s much more shallow with loads of structure and shallow water. It also has less traffic on it and more Red Fish than most rivers its size. The inter-coastal canal also holds Specks and Reds. If you can deal with the wake of larger boats, you can bounce Shrimp and plastics on the bottom while drifting with the current. Remember the “bigger boat has the right of way” rule and stay away from the tug boats. All in all, January is a great month for inshore fish. I have customers that fill their freezers with Sheepshead for the year this month. Specks will provide you with a fun and easy challenge this month and White Trout plus Whiting offer the chance to catch all the fish you care to clean. Stay safe and dry. “Among the Diving Butterflies” She was all right angles and wrong-headed notions, in love with the ocean in theory, but leery of anything that licked, and smacked, and clung to the fine hairs on the backs of her legs as she flung her dirndl skirt to the sand. A man? Whatever for? Adored from her borning to the dawning of her womanhood, how could she be any less complete for lack of a ring on her finger? Still, lingering on the tingle of foam’s glancing lips, she watches bivalves abandon the sea for the companion uncertainty of sand, and, hands outstretched to offset the chance of one-legged curiosity, she holds her breath and slips her toe among the diving butterflies.

Grayson Capps & The Lost Cause Minstrels will play Gulf Shores New Year’s Day Polar Bear Dip Submitted

Grayson Capps & The Lost Cause Minstrels will rock the post dip party during The second annual Kiwanis Club of Gulf Shores Polar Bear Dip at Gulf Shores Public Beach on New Year’s Day 2013. Participants are encouraged to come in costume and celebrate the New Year at the family-friendly event. The plunge into the Gulf will take place at high noon, directly in front of The Hangout, at the south end of Highway 59 in Gulf Shores. David “Hornman’’ Jones will entertain at the pre-dip party beginning at 11

a.m. A Slip-n Slide for kids young and old will also be open for business on the beach beginning at 11 a.m. Representatives from the Law Enforcement Torch Run will be at the event with their Torch Run Tahoe along with caps and T-shirts, which they will sell to raise funds for Alabama Special Olympics. In addition to the Lost Cause Minstrels, the post-dip party will feature a costume contest and a special cash award to the “loudest” Snowbird Club. The Hangout will provide free chili (while supplies last) with voluntary donations to the

Kiwanis Club appreciated. Event Tshirts, priced at $15, are on sale now at The Hangout. Scouts visit Baldwin County Heritage Museum

A group of Tiger Cub Scouts from the North Mobile and their families visited the Baldwin County Heritage Museum recently as a place for their first "Go-SeeIt" outing. The boys and their Den leaders stop for a photo with their tour guide Joe Salzmann on the steps of the recently completed General Store Exhibit. The Scouts also enjoyed a Blacksmith and Cane Squeezing demonstration. BCHM is located at 25521 Highway 98 E., Elberta. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday. ‘Who’s on the Island?’

daughter, who was a pilot and flying another plane at the time, locked up with his and refueled from his plane. As a reservist, one of his more interesting assignments was circling overhead of Air Force One when President Nixon was in Florida, he said. Another was when a Cuban MIG landed next to him at Homestead. In 1973, Rich and Merry K. sold everything and went to Arkansas to visit family with their four children. While there, they bought a 500- acre farm/ranch on a lake. The farm had a runway, 30,000 chickens, 150 cattle, and 10,000 bales of hay. In 1975, Rich set up a flight school, chartered planes and rented space to owners with their own planes. After nine years, he sold the school and became a flight engineer/simulator instructor for American Airlines. The company sent him to Marsh Air Force base as an instructor, so he and his family moved there and stayed for several years. Finally, he made his way to Memphis, Tenn. and got a job with Fed Ex as a simulator instructor. Fed Ex had four jets, and Rich flew the planes on days off to get time in. In 1993, at 57 years old, he became a Fed Ex pilot. He was in the air headed for Washington when 9-11 occurred. Upon receiving instructions to divert and shut down, he remembered that it was a terrifying day in the lives of most Americans. In 2001, he retired. His children were all grown and were successful. He now had 4 children, 6 grandchildren and one great grandchild. His oldest son, Jim is a librarian at Faulkner in Montgomery. His son Mike works for NASA, and is retired from 20 years in the Air Force. Third is Tracy, a graduate of University of Arkansas, who is an accomplished artist, and the forth is Dawn who lives in California and is a Lt Col. In the Air Force Reserves (active) and a Liason officer for the U. S. Air Force Academy. Rich and Merry K. bought an RV and traveled, spending winters in Key West, and the rest of the year in Arkansas, or other parts of Florida. One day while sipping a drink in Key

Dauphine Rich and Merry K. Womack West, he heard about “America’s Great Loop,” and decided he wanted to do it. The America’s Great Loop Cruisers website says, “Have you ever dreamed of leaving it all behind, hopping on your own boat, and casting off for an adventure like no other?” The site describes the Great Loop as, “the continuous waterway that encompasses the Eastern portion of North America including the Atlantic and Gulf Intracoastal Waterways, the Great Lakes, the Canadian Heritage Canals, and the inland rivers of America’s heartland … and is considered one of the safest long distance cruising routes in the world. To travel all, a portion, or any of the magnificent side trips of the Great Loop is an adventure of a lifetime.” Rich bought an old yacht specifically to make the trip, refurbished it and set out to do the Loop. The Great Loop Cruise is “the circumnavigation of eastern North America by water.” Rich and Merry K. made the trip, which turned into a wonderful adventure. They arrived in Gulf Shores at the beginning of the Shrimp Festival, and made time to visit with their daughter. They said they loved the area and hoped to come back. They took time to check out a few condos while here both to rent and to buy. They were very pleased to be here in Paradise, just as we Islanders are pleased to have them ON THE ISLAND.

Measurements depend on how many bottles you’d like to make. Boil vinegar. Carefully drop peppers into bottle so that bottle is full, but peppers aren’t crushed. Don’t touch your eyes or face until you’ve washed your hands. Use a funnel to pour vinegar over peppers; fill bottle to just shy of the rim or cork. Seal bottle and store for 1-2 weeks before using.
