ust as Beachin’ rolls in waves and basks in rays of Alabama’s Gulf Coast, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan inspire each issue with unique events, mouth-watering seafood Jessica Jones and Southern dishes, apparel to suit beach bums to country clubbers…. This guide to the Gulf Coast offers insight into local restaurants, nightlife, attractions and events will ensure that time well spent on Pleasure Island. First and foremost, the humid subtropical climate and white-sand beaches provide an oasis for guests. Don flip-flops and Hawaiian shirts or just a bathing suit. Spend hours of tranquility against a crashing-ocean wave backdrop with a good book, umbrella drink, or a completely blank slate. Dig toes into grains of sand, collect sea mementos or build sandcastles with the kids. Take a refreshing dip or dive into water adventures like parasailing, jet skiing or surfing. The area also offers family fun outings like the zoo, miniature golf, arcades, go carts, outlet, surf shop and boutique shopping. Whether you’re looking for a new cover-up or an evening gown, Pleasure Island’s got you covered. Souvenirs range from shot glasses to seashells—go ahead, make your friends jealous. Or let your inner child out to play with a day filled of bumper boats, foam machines, Tiki huts and waterfalls. Or perhaps Pleasure Island provides playtime for you and your sweetheart. Golf the gorgeous shores of the Gulf of Mexico with lush greens, a golf cart and two cold glasses of sweet tea or head for some relaxation built for two with a trip to the spa for couples massages. Maybe a tandem bicycle ride by the beach or late night stroll on the boardwalk is more your style. Perhaps fine dining and dancing... nothing says “I love you” like cracking crab legs and whisking away for a salty-sea waltz. Or, why not have it all? Rock out to beach-side concerts, get inspires at the Orange Beach Festival of Art, dig in at the Island’s annual Shrimp Festival and jump for moon pies with Mardi Gras goers. Whatever your taste, leave the itinerary at home and let Beachin’ be your guide to Southern hospitality, sandy feet and memories that leave you craving your next opportunity to Beach-it.

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit!

Voted The Best Salon In It was a beautiful summer morning when Pam and I left Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, an Englishman, Anthony Jones, who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach. My hair is very important to me and getting a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for. Excellent hair color to boot! We have both been very dissatisfied with the last few attempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles. Most of the so called stylists did not take into consideration our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on time to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and he ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beautiful. Pam went first since I was a little chicken after the last experiences. He directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape explaining that there are five face shapes and her face shape was oval; Next was bone structure, head shape, the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, and then what sort of condition her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, including cow licks; then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Anthony started with a relaxing shampoo and deep conditioning. For the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of motion, ending with a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn. My hair, especially in the summer, gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different than professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the conditioners are based on petroleum oil. Professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair. He went on to say that we should wash our hair every day and condition the same. Anthony explained that at all times our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it, the same as our skin. We

Baldwin County In 2010 should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin by moisturizing it every day, which made a lot of sense to me. My last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because, in her mind, it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. After we went through the ten rules he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and conditioning my hair had ever. While shampooing he explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over the counter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. After shampooing, and before conditioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, putting any conditioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinsing the excess off, no more. After he explained to me the how & whys I understood. He is like a hair doctor, if we listen and do what he says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful. I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous... I bought a bottle. Anyway our cuts cost us $40 each, best money we ever spent and yes we are definitely going back, he is a true professional. Well worth a visit!

Anthony Jones’ Salon is located on Perdido Beach Blvd. in Orange Beach; the phone number is 251-974-1514. Please say we sent you!

inspires helping-hand style book series

Did your mother ever tell you that you could be whatever you wanted to be when you grew up? Do you remember feeling larger than life, up to any task and an overall sense of energy and motivation? One aspect of childhood that many adults which to recapture is that very attitude, that non-jaded self. While adult problems become increasingly complicated, we often feel overwhelmed. We feel pulled in different directions, and that there simply aren’t enough hours to accomplish all that needs to be done. But one children’s book series has tackled that sense of self-worth and can-do spirit of childhood, while helping children understand and cope with a complicated and emotionally-charged issue. Co-author Ilene Baskett explained that “The Boat House Buddies Deal With the Big Spill” is a series of 10 books. Each book stands alone and does not need to be read in order. However, books one and two set the tone and go hand in hand. “Book one, ‘Coming Together,’ explains who the Buddies are and what they are all about,” she began. “Book two, ‘Facing the Facts,’ is the most educational as to what actually happened with the oil spill.” “From there, books three through nine feature each in-

GoGulfCoastNow.com

dividual Buddy and their action plan on helping with the spill. Book 10, ‘Happy Endings New Beginnings,’ brings it all together with hope for the future.” She divulged that the books deal with helping others, and that they actually do help others, as well. “The main message for all is that no effort is too small, everyone can help in some way,” she said. “We also donate a portion of our proceeds from the sale of each book to various community organizations; each is identified on the front inside cover of the book.” Co-author Karen Thomason explained that the project began with a buddy-system of sorts—basically a group of women who wanted to help. “I worked part time with and amazing group of ladies—we were all terribly upset about the oil spill; each one of us loves the Gulf Coast and we desperately wanted to do our part,” she began. “I woke up with a strange dream early one morning and I can't explain how all of the details just spilled out of my head , but I know exactly where the ideas came from—I will always believe that this ministry was heaven sent.” Thomason recalled the beginning of the Buddies. “When I got to work that morning, my dear friends Ilene Baskett, Melanie Houseknecht and Elva Simpson were all there and I couldn’t wait to tell them about my weird dream,” she recalled. “I had no idea how they would respond…ideas were flying around so fast that Melanie yelled, ‘Stop! We've got to write this down.’” “I call her ‘Organized Buddy.’ Melanie is a retired elementary school teacher and Elva is a grandmother of four. With their help as editors, Ilene and I felt like we were able to try to educate and comfort children who were affected by the tragedy. As the project began to unfold, we realized that children everywhere have to deal with problems, no matter how serious the problems might be. We tried to map out a simple approach to deal with whatever might be frightening to them. We try to stress finding the facts, communication and positive planning.” Just as each woman had a role in making the book series a reality, different children within the books come up with their own problem-solving offerings. “Each character in the book series comes up with a positive plan to try to put others first and aid in the recovery.” Baskett agreed that coming together was made easier when the group was presented with such a significant event. “The Deepwater Horizon oil spill was history to our area and it must never be forgotten,” she declared. “Oil has stopped flowing, but the long term environmental, economic, health and psychological effects are yet to be seen.” “We encourage our readers to become an Environment PAL (Protect Appreciate Love). It is not just the beach life that we focus on, but the bayou as well. Book eight, ‘Trouble on the Bayou,’ shows our readers how the whole seafood community of Bayou La Batre was effected. These people's livelihoods and way of life were brought to a halt.

September 2012

Beachin’

11

Through our work there, we realize that the bayou has a long way to go for full recovery. To this day The Bayou Recovery Project is helping all aspects of the community to just survive. Boat People SOS and Project Rebound are working with us to have book eight translated in to Vietnamese. She said that she has always felt a closeness to this particular ecosystem, and felt driven to help the environment, as well as those effected. “Cindy and I are from the New Jersey shore; She and I grew up in a small town called Wall Township,” she explained. “We both grew up loving the beach and waterways.” “Oil rigs are not something you see on the New Jersey shoreline, but pollution, ocean garbage, people and industry ignorance are common to every beach area. This whole experience on the Gulf coast makes everyone realize how precious and fragile all coastal environments really are.” Thomason admitted that seeing helping hands joined toward a common goal has touched her life. “We are very fortunate to have already donated $2,000 to various community organizations—this has been a very rewarding blessing to us. While teaching children about the power within, Thomason learned that lesson for herself. “Unlike Ilene and our fantastic illustrator, Cindy Allen, I never really thought that I would ever become an author,” she said. “I'm a retired math teacher and mother of three grown children; this adventure came to me quite by surprise, but it has been such an amazing part of my life.” “The places we have been, the people we have met and the things we've been able to do are such a blessing to me. My hope is that no one will say, ‘I always wanted to do that or I wish that I’d done this.’ You can do it, but it's a lot easier and a lot more fun if you do it with your buddies!” For more information, or to order books, visit boathousebuddies.com. Gulf Shores’ new logo is “small town… big beach.” Small towns across America have at least one barbershop that most every guy in town visits once a month. How fortunate we are to “return to Mayberry” and talk to our very own “Floyd the Barber.” Our “Floyd” is Wayne Johnson at Wayne’s Barber Shop just off Canal Road and a block from Gulf Shores’ Tacky Jacks. MARK ROBINSON If you are running for office, have other political aspirations, or if you just want to be up on the local news from around town, then you want to have Wayne on your side. He’s a good listener and an even better talker. You get the impression that you can ask Wayne anything, and he’ll give you back some Wayne wit-i-cism in return. He is never short on answers, or on good advice and most of the time, while in the shop awaiting your turn or in the chair, you’ll be laughing. On my last visit, he was on a roll about the legend of “Railroad Bill” McCoy. That story was a long one, but by the time my haircut was over, I’d heard most of it. It was a story that was worth looking up when I got home to fill in the gaps. The Encyclopedia of Alabama describes “Railroad Bill” as a “’Robin Hood’ character, a murderous criminal, a shape shifter, and a nameless victim of the Jim Crow South” around 1895. It’s quite a tale. As for Wayne’s tale, he was born in Nokomis, Ala. on Feb. 16, 1942 of an Irish father, and a Creek Indian mother. He was a 12 and-a-half pound baby and he’s now a big, tall, physically-fit man. He grew up near Atmore, but attended school in Davisville, Fla. because at the time, they had a better education system, and his dad wanted the best for him. He went to high school at Walnut Hill, Fla. and his size and strength led him to football where fans still talk about his senior-year winning catch of a Hail Mary pass in the end zone in the last seconds of the biggest game of the year—against the school’s biggest rival. After graduating from high school, Wayne joined the Army and served honorably for three years. He was a patriot then, and he’s a patriot now. When he left the military, he went to Barber School in Montgomery. He said that back when he was 10 years old, he worked in a barber shop shining shoes at ten cents a shine. He watched the barbers cutting hair at a dollar a cut and decided that barbering was what he wanted to do. It wasn’t just the money; it was that he liked people and loved the interaction and “fireside chats” people had while getting their hair cut. He also understood that the barbers were making ten times what he was making shining shoes. Upon completing Barber School in 1965, Wayne got a job in Spanish Fort. He liked the area, but he loved the beach. At every opportunity, he drove down to Gulf

Shores/Orange Beach to fish, camp, or just watch the girls. Wayne met and became friends with Syd Begal, who owned the very first barbershop on the Island. In 1967, Syd, leased the building to Wayne and, in 1969, Wayne bought the building. Forty-five years later, Wayne is still operating the landmark, which is now an integral part of the Island. For 40 of those years, Wayne was married to B. J. Fuqua, and they had a daughter, Michelle—a beautiful young lady who came to work at the barber shop after attending the University of South Alabama. Michelle greets customers with her radiant smile and big country “hello.” Two years ago, Wayne’s wife passed away, and he now lives alone on his 40-acre farm up in Summerdale. He loves to garden, and when there’s a good crop, he’ll bring his vegetables in to the shop and give them to his customers. This year, Wayne turned over his barbershop to one of his barbers, Larry Ryan. He said he gave Larry his very first haircut, and when Larry decided to be a barber, Wayne took him under his wing and trained him in the art of cutting hair. Larry has been with Wayne for 13 years

and is an excellent barber. He especially loves working with small children. Wayne says that although he has turned over the business, he will continue to work there two days a week. Nothing changed except that Wayne won’t be dealing with the business of the shop. Larry’s smile and quick wit are a complement to Wayne’s super personality. Larry’s ties to the Island go back to when his grandfather was the last lighthouse keeper on Sand Island, adding to the long-term connection between the shop owners and the community. Wayne’s shop is an institution, a living monument on the Island. Wayne has cut hair for 45 years in the same shop, and will continue to do so. For his customers, nothing has changed. Wayne’s barber shop still has that warm, friendly, inviting feel that one would expect to find in a “small town” with a “big beach.” For locals and snowbirds alike, Wayne is a part of the beach experience. It’s a pleasure, and an honor, to have him ON THE ISLAND. Thank you, Wayne, for what you give back to all of us.

Hooked with Don Holloway

September waters By Don Holloway

Time to cool down a little and hope the storms miss us this year. September is a month that a lot of South Alabama fishermen wait for. It does get a little cooler, the Specks are still around in deep water and may even start to move to some creek and river heads, Slot Red Fish can still be caught up the creeks and rivers, Bull Red Fish are still on the Dixey Bar. Flounder will start their move south, and you can catch really large numbers of White Trout at the near-shore and off-shore gas rigs. If the tides are moving and it’s early in the day, fish all the piers and docks and sea walls along the beaches of Mobile Bay. Also hit all creek heads as well as marinas and channel edges. Use top water , grubs, DOAs and the like, live shrimp, and most of all, small live croakers under a cork. There have been a bunch of 5-pounders and a few at 7-plus pounds this summer. Remember, that a 10-pounder is still out there. Plastics and top waters have had good days with 2- to 4- pounders. After it heats up, head for the in-shore reefs and inshore gas rigs. Fish slip corks near the bottom or tight line on the bottom. Or use split shot and drift your shrimp down current towards any structure that you may fish. For Slot Red Fish, try all structures in the brackish parts of our inland bays and all piers or bulk heads in the same water. Plastics work well on Slot Red Fish as well as live shrimp on a cork. For the Bull Red Fish, the Dixey Bar is still the best spot that I have ever fished. We caught them up to 40 pounds this year and as many as 38 in a four-hour trip. All were caught by drift fishing live pogies on the bottom using 30-pound test main line, a 50-pound test mono leader, a 7/0 circle hook, and a 2 oz. slip sinker. If you are unable to locate pogies, then use live croakers in the same manner. Please be sure to release all that you can and be sure to revive them when released. If you see one floating belly-up, stop and try to revive it. This month, the Flounder will start their move south. All bulk heads, piers, sea walls, boat ramps, marinas, and any other structure will hold good numbers of Flounder this fall. Slip sinkers with a number 4 kahle and a Live Bull or Tiger Minnow will work great as well as all plastics bounced on the bottom. If you use plastics, make it sweeter by hooking a croaker belly behind the plastic. Try not to net a Flounder tail first. They are strong and will pull off if you net them the wrong way. If the day is calm and the water is flat, try a little off-shore rig fishing for White Trout. They will gather in large schools around some of these rigs. Fish on the bottom with shrimp, cut bait, or plastics. Keep what you want to clean and have a

great fish fry that night. All in all, September can be a really great month in the Bay, if the storms stay away. If the storms do come, then good luck. Be careful and stay safe. Always know the fish and game laws, be aware of other boats, and catch and release when you can. You can reach me at backbayfishingwithdon.com or 251-550-5418.
