Our approach to surgery helped Sue get back to her active life fast. After years of dealing with symptoms that caused severe discomfort and interfered with her work and everyday life, Sue Alford knew she needed a hysterectomy. But she was worried about all the downtime. “My doctor explained that robotic-assisted surgery can mean a shorter recovery time, so that’s what I decided on,” Sue explained. “I received great care at South Baldwin Regional Medical Center. I was up and walking within hours of my surgery, thanks to the robotic procedure. It’s great to feel like myself again.” To learn more about surgical services at South Baldwin Regional Medical Center, visit SouthBaldwinRMC.com/SurgicalServices.

The Wharf Uncorked Wine, food and live entertainment Restaurant Review Thyme. by the bay

ISSUE 10: SEPT. 5 – 18

Hello all! My name is Allison Woodham and I am the new editor for Gulf Coast Buzz. I am very excited to take on this role along with Baldwin People. I was born and raised in Baldwin County, and I look forward to sharing with you the fun, food and entertainment our county has to offer. Hold on to this issue for daily reference using our two-week calender. Learn more by reading our features and our informative columns. For the athletes, the Brett-Robinson Alabama Coastal Triathlon is Sept. 6. Get your family involved with fall sports, like football, with Eric’s Family Fun column. Twelve dollars is all you need to test your dancing skills at the Dance Night at the Gallery at the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance Gallery in Gulf Shores. Or stroll around Foley and appreciate artwork while sipping some vino at Third Friday Art Walk and Wine Tasting. Look for our next issue on Sept. 19, consisting of budding fall events, such as the county-wide Coastal Clean-up, the third annual Delta Dash in Stockton, the Jubilee Festival in Daphne and, of course, the Baldwin County Fair in Robertsdale. Our festival issue, to be released on Oct. 3, will be your guide to festivals in Baldwin County throughout October. No worries — we’ve got all the fun, food and entertainment in one place for you! Fall is almost upon us, and there is much to do!

LA Songwriters Festival celebrates 10 years

T

his year marks the 10th year for the LA Songwriters Festival in Fairhope, and organizers say they hope it will be one of the best yet. “We have covered some ground with writers from Nashville, southwest Florida, Louisianna, Mississippi and right here in South Baldwin County,” organizer Charles Davis said. “Among the talent that has passed through are writers who have had their songs recorded by The Oak Ridge Boys, Hank Williams Jr., Sammy Kershaw, Kenny Chesney, Deanna White, Jason Biggs and Randy Travis. So many people never get an opportunity to listen to the creator of the songs. This is the perfect venue to see that with over 35 songwriters gathered for three nights, on one stage, in one location.” Original songwriters from the Eastern Shore, Lower Alabama, Nashville and beyond are participating in this exciting three day event at the American Legion on beautiful Mobile Bay, so come and catch the music.

must confess I have a weakness for Rita Mae Brown’s “Mrs. Murphy” mystery series. My freshman year of high school, a family friend gave me two of her first books as a Christmas present and I’ve been hooked since. The murder mystery series, set in idyllic Crozet, Va., centers around Mary

Minor “Harry” Haristeen and her pets — the brave cat Mrs. Murphy, the last gray cat Pewter and rough and tumble corgi Tee Tucker. The reader can enjoy the animals’ lively conversations with one another, even if the characters in the tale can’t. Like usual for a “Mrs. Murphy” book, murder and dark secrets long forgotten have once again found their way to the sleepy town, and it’s up to Harry and her pets to get to the bottom of the goings-on. It may not be high literature, but it’s the sort of book that never fails to lift my spirits. Delightful characters, a good pace and talking animals — who could ask for anything more?

he bulls are coming back for a second go-round at the legendary Flora-Bama as Bulls on the Beach returns. “We are very blessed to be returning to this great venue,” said Robertsdale native Cody Harris, event creator and one of its organizers. “Not everybody can host an event like this and I think it’s a big deal that during their 50th anniversary celebration, the Flora-Bama will be part of giving away a gold buckle to the winner.” This year’s event will kick off on Thursday, Sept. 11 with a pair events for the sponsors, Harris said, including a fishing trip at the Yacht Club at the Flora-Bama, followed by a black-tie dinner with the proceeds benefitting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Cowboys from Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Washington state and Colo-

On Friday night, a special concert featuring country music legend Sammy Kershaw will be held beginning at 8 p.m. at the Flora-Bama. FAMILY FUN

Support your local football team! (And band and cheerleaders, etc.)

High school football, especially where we live, is a great way to get your family involved in the community. Every Friday night you can see your neighbors, your pastor, your city council members and your schoolmates cheering for your hometown team. You might even see a great football game as well. The ticket prices are low, and food is affordable compared to high-priced college football games. Here are a few upcoming games to take your family to. Gulf Shores at Baldwin County: These two have played before, but they have never met as region rivals. SEPT. 5 Because of the AHSAA’s realignment over the summer the teams now compete in 6A Region 1. My wife, a BCHS grad, swears by the sausage dogs at Lyle Underwood Stadium. I like the Gulf Shores “Pride of Pleasure Island” marching band. Other Sept. 5 games in Baldwin County: Saraland at Robertsdale, T.R. Miller at Bayside Academy.

Daphne at Robertsdale: The Daphne Trojans visit J.D. Sellars Stadium to renew their county SEPT. 12 rivalry with the Robertsdale Golden Bears. Robertsdale’s head coach, Brian Campbell, is a former Daphne assistant; and Daphne coach Glenn Vickery is one of the most successful coaches in the state.

Mary G. Montgomery at Foley: The Foley Lions host the Mary G. Montgomery Vikings at Ivan Jones SEPT. 12 Stadium. Foley has produced some of the greatest talents in the state’s history, with Julio Jones, Kenny Stabler, Robert Lester and D.J. Fluker all coming from the Forward City’s football program. Foley also boasts one of the best and most exciting marching bands around, the “Mighty Band from Lion Land.”

All Alabama high school football games begin at 7 p.m. For a complete football schedule and overview of each Baldwin County football team, find our 2014 Fall Sports publication at any Gulf Coast Newspaper’s office.

ALL ABOUT FOOD

New books, new recipes By Jill Clair Gentry jillianclair@gmail.com

Fellow foodies: I've got a book you must read. It’s called “Bread & Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table” by Shauna Niequist, and it’s a beautiful book about food, family and real life. I just love her style of hospitality and the recipes she includes in the book, like this one for white bean soup. I've adjusted it just a little (she calls for prosciutto and I'm letting you know it would be just fine to use bacon instead, although prosciutto is divine). Please add this book to your reading list, and definitely give this recipe a try. It’s the first time I’ve ever used fennel, and I was pleased with the results. I can’t wait to explore more recipes with that ingredient. Enjoy!

White bean soup

Start to finish: 1 hour Serves 6 to 8 Soup n 2 shallots, sliced n 1/2 pound carrots, sliced into coins on a diagonal n 1 bulb fennel, sliced n 4 celery ribs, sliced on a diagonal n 6 cans white beans in liquid (cannellini or great northern beans) n Salt and pepper to taste Vinaigrette n 1 tablespoon dijon mustard n 1/8 cup balsamic vinegar n 1/4 cup olive oil Garnish n Crispy prosciutto or bacon, crumbled n Parmesan cheese n 1 tablespoon rosemary, chopped (optional) Preparation In a stockpot or dutch oven, soften the shallots in olive oil over medium heat. Add carrots, fennel and celery, and

allow to soften, 10 to 15 minutes. Add beans in their liquid and chopped rosemary. Cover and cook for 20 minutes at a gentle boil. Taste, add salt and pepper, taste again. Keep in mind the toppings will be salty. Cook for an additional 20 minutes, or longer if you have time. Off heat, mash with a potato masher or the back of a wooden spoon for a chunky texture. If you'd like a smoother texture, run it through a food processor or use an immersion blender. Vinaigrette Mix dijon, balsamic, olive oil and some salt and pepper in a glass jar with a lid. Shake well. Adjust to taste. Serve soup with a small pitcher of vinaigrette and bowls of prosciutto or bacon, Parmesan and rosemary.

TASTINGS

The history of the IPA By Scott Gentry gentrst@gmail.com

I

Scott Ge nt

f you’ve checked out the craft beer section in any retail store, you’ve seen at least a couple examples of a style called IPA or India Pale Ale. The American craft beer community has fully embraced this style, to the extent that we consider the American IPA a distinct style. The history of beer is rich with cultural and political impact. The IPA is a prime example. First brewed by the British dating to the early 1800s, IPA was exported to India. If you recall, India was a British colony until 1947. So there were lots of people in India who wanted beer. There was a problem — beer has a shelf life. Knowing that hops and alcohol will help beer stay fresh on the long journey from England to India, brewers exporting their beer relied on these methods to deliver a good product. The alcohol content was slightly higher than average, but the hop additions were significantly increased. The style became popury

lar then, but the modern craft beer movement has taken it to another level. A good IPA is a lighter color; think golden to goldbrown. Expect an ABV in the 5 – 7 percent range. Hoppy aroma and bitterness dominates with just enough malt to support the acidity of the hops. My favorite IPA is Deschutes Brewery’s Fresh Squeezed IPA. It’s absolutely juicy with citrusy hop flavor. Unfortunately the closest place one can find this beer is the nation of Texas. But thankfully Stone Brewing Company’s IPA is now available, which is outstanding too.

TRY THESE IPAS:

Malt: Pale, Crystal, Munich Hops: Citra, Mosaic, Nugget Juicy, citrusy taste.

Citrus flavor and hop aromas; subtle malt character; crisp and extra hoppy taste.

Brewerys most popular beer; citrusy, floral hop aroma, a strong malt body and a crisp finish.

Alc. 7 percent IBUs 72 Pine and citrus aromas; dark color of a stout paired with hoppiness of an American IPA. ***This beer is currently not available in cans or bottles but can be found at the Fairhope Brewery taproom as well as certain bars and restaurants throughout Alabama.

outh soccer teams from around the country will descend on Foley for the newly renamed Publix Super Cup — where 200 boys and girls soccer teams will compete for the coveted championship and bragging rights for the next year. Started in 2007 as the Flora-Bama Showcase, the event has steadily grown into a family-friendly showcase that highlights the skills and talents of young players from around south Alabama and other states alike. The tournament will be spread across facilities in Foley, Orange Beach and Perdido Key; and event organizers say they hope this year's match will be the largest one yet. “Every year, this event has continued to grow as it brings thousands of kids and parents to our Gulf Coast region,” Fred Garth of Snap Soccer said. Snap Soccer manages the event. The multi-city event will be held on back-to-back weekends — starting with the boys' tournament and ending with the girls.
