ith the busy Christmas season rapidly approaching, shoppers might find a helping hand in area businesses as they offer perfect gifts for widely varied family and friends. From high fashion boutiques to down-home items, get ready to enjoy a wonderful experience as much as loved ones enjoy their gifts. But the area has more than gift items — find fixings for holiday meals, salon styles and even lawn mower service. If the shopping list seems to continue growing, never fear; Baldwin County brims with businesses ready to help you check it twice.
Retailers Backyard Paradise

Cadeaux Caches
Cadeaux Caches’ Donna Ratajczak said the shop has great options and gift selections. “We are a great store to shop if you are looking for that something affordable, unique, different or that one-of-a-kind gift,” she began. “We just got back from a buying trip in New Mexico — where we trade with 12 Indian Nations for the most amazing Indian jewelry, accessories and wall decor. The pieces are all hand crafted by American Indians with sterling silver and natural stones.” But one-of-a-kind options don’t end there. “Another great selling Christmas idea is our Scientific Toys,” she said. “The prices range from $2.50 to $99. We carry Earth Globes that show the city lights around the world, hand boilers, globes that float in mid-air, pet tornados, praxinoscopes (animators), musical ties, disappearing money banks ... just to name a few. We also have an incredible selection of Fair Trade. Our items come directly from communities around the globe. Our Fair Trade selection(s) are never manufactured; all our pieces are handmade
November 2013 with natural products. Our store is fully stocked with a selection of the most exquisite Himalayan Purses, Mexican Weekend Bags, Guatemalan Scented Coasters, Peruvian Bread Warmers, African Masks, Turkish Dishes, Vietnamese Instruments and Dragonflies, a bestseller, and Russian Dolls. This is just a small sample of the global collection we carry at Cadeaux Caches.” The shop also carries items from area artists. “Local art is an essential part of our store’s vision,” she explained. “We carry over 30 local artists. This includes hand beaded water purses, a best seller, handmade beauty products, soap, a best seller, (shea, goat’s milk, honey, loofa), jewelry, paintings, key chains, honey, ornaments (okra, oyster, driftwood, sea glass), Old South art and local photography. At Cadeaux Caches, we pride ourselves on true originality — our items are handpicked from both local and global artisans. We truly embody the vision of thinking globally and buying locally. If you are looking for that truly unique shopping experience, or that one of a kind gift that you won’t find anywhere else — shop Cadeaux Caches.”
Christmas 'Round the Corner
Christmas ‘Round the Corner’s Glenda Courtney, buyer and manager, said the shop has all your Christmas needs. “We have nautical to hunting and fishing, ballerina and fairy ornaments,” she said. “And that’s just a few of the things we carry.” Other ornaments include: Christopher Radko from Poland; Christina’s World from Poland; Brush Fire from Hattiesburg, Miss.; Dickens villages, North Pole villages, original Snow villages and blown glass from Egypt, she said. The store also has Dept. 56 Snowbabies and Byers Choice carolers. “We have something for everybody: the Santas, the nutcrackers,” she offered.

maker needs,” she explained. “We have a wide selection of beer kits, wine kits and ingredients for your special recipe. We stock all the accessories, too, so come by and check us out.”
In the Company of Angels
Diane Douglas of In the Company of Angels said this store helps ring in the holiday spirit. “For 25 years, In the Company of Angels has provided uplifting gifts and accessories to our coastal area. This ‘Go-To’ Shop for locals and ‘Must-See’ for visitors now welcomes all to the true ‘message’ of Christmas. Angels, crosses and lambs share shelf space with shepherds and nativities in a newly expanded thoughtfulness shop anchoring Fairhope’s French Quarter. Specially-themed areas of the shop invite everyone to browse undisturbed throughout the shop with friendly service just a heartbeat away.” Selection and shop design aside, thoughtful service puts icing on this Christmas cake. “’Thinking baskets’ are scattered nearby to collect any selection one might be considering.”
Mossy Oak
Lynn Schubert, store manager of Mossy Oak, said that the store has plenty of Southern charm and sports inspiration for gift givers. “We have camo for the entire family, from newborn to granddad, including the dog,” she said with a laugh. “We also carry an entire line of UnderArmour, and we have Tervis Tumblers that make a great gift. Gulf Shores announces slate of holiday events By Blake Phelps Whether it’s catching a hilarious holiday musical or marveling at the glow of the lighted parade, families won’t have to look very far for a little fun and excitement this season. The City of Gulf Shores has announced a full slate of events planned for its annual holiday celebration and invites locals and visitors to enjoy their Christmas on the Alabama Gulf Coast. “The City of Gulf Shores is proud to be partnering with the Alabama Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce and local businesses in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach to promote the Coastal Christmas campaign,” Grant Brown, recreation and cultural affairs director, said. “We encourage all businesses to participate by decorating for the season to help make our community an unforgettable holiday destination.” Gulf Shores will kick off their holiday festivities at the Erie H. Meyer Civic Center on Tuesday, Dec. 3 with A Christmas Musical Celebration starring pianist, vocalist and musical director Brian Gurl. Beat the Black Friday craze by planning ahead By Jessica Jones Special publications editor JJones@GulfCoastNewspapers.com Dedicated shoppers understand that Black Friday sales come with a steep price tag all their own. There’s waking up in the wee-hours, stumbling through a dark house for clothes and coffee, cold morning air and long lines for door busters. Oftentimes, the day after Thanksgiving brings more negative results than indigestion and surprisingly shrunken jeans. After a morning filled with stress, wanted items are often sold out or unavailable in your needed, size, color, theme ... But a little planning goes a long way. Some internet research or a Thanksgiving evening sitting amid sale papers can mean time well spent and deal dreams, a reality.
Step 1: Create a shopping list
Start by writing down all the names of family and friends for whom you intend to buy Christmas gifts. While you may not know what item to buy them, a list of names will get your wheels turning and help guide your store map.
Step 2: Sale focus
Peruse sale papers and websites to find deals that fit the likes and wants of those on your list. The Bass Pro Shops catalogue might tempt you with incredible discounts, but if your shopping list contains all women, that might not be your best bet. (Save our lovely huntresses and female fishing enthusiasts!) Same goes for toy stores. No matter how cute the wares, focus your attention on the shopping list and avoid toy stores if the children have all grown up.
Step 3: Timing is everything
Once you’ve selected your stores, see which one opens earliest, second, third, etc. Be sure to look for door buster deals, limited availability, early bird coupons and Thanksgiving Day opportunities. Plan your trip based on opening times and most desired items. I’ve been known to make a dash by Old Time Pottery just to secure my early bird coupon, go get other door busters at different places, then come back to shop and use my discount.
Step 4: Early is everything
Arriving at shops early is a good idea since many people are after the same thing you are. Lines can wrap around buildings and parking can be impossible, so get in line and prepare yourself for a long day. Eat a good breakfast, dress according to weather range, be courteous and try not to get trampled.
Step 5: Call in reinforcements
If friends or family members are available, take them with you. Helpers can grab one item while you go for another. Get what’s most important first; there will be time for strolling later. If friends are as enthralled as you are, coordinate your schedules together. Maybe you can grab items for her at one store, and she can grab for you at the next. At the end of the day, take time to soak those tired feet. Eat leftovers instead of slaving in the kitchen. And don’t forget to show off all your deal steals to your everso-interested spouse or call up a friend to brag. Christmas doesn’t have to break the bank, just use those marvelous multi-tasking skills and get ready for some holiday fun.
