hinese New Year, which is also known as the Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival is considered to be the most important traditional Chinese festival. The origin is traced back to about 3,500 years ago and evolved over a long period of time with its customs have undergone a long development process.
Feature
The celebration has been originated from the year end religious ceremony during the Shang Dynasty. The practice was believed to begin during the early period of Emperor Yao and Shun’s reigns. Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty consistently measures a period of the year from the solar base calendar. Hence, he established the first day of the month of the traditional Chinese calendar as the beginning of the year and the New Year is celebrated in accordance to this day. The date of the Chinese New Year changes every year as it is based on the lunar Calendar. The date of the Chinese New Year is determined according to the moon’s orbit around the earth. This normally falls on the second new moon after the winter.

The St. Valentine’s Day contains reminders of both Christian and ancient Roman traditions. Valentine or Valentinus was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. During that time, Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families and outlawed marriage for young men. St. Valentine, who realized this injustice, defended over this idea and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Claudius discovered Valentine’s
actions, he ordered that he be put to death. It is also noted that Valentine sent his first greeting to a young girl who he fell in love with on this day. It is alleged that he wrote a letter signed ‘From your valentine’ which is an expression that is still in use today. Although there has been no definite agreement to any of his stories, Valentine was always portrayed a sympathetic, heroic and romantic figure.

Chinese New Year Home Decorations
O
ne of the most important aspect of the Chinese New Year is decorating the houses with traditional Chinese symbols. Lanterns, take-out boxes, festive table settings, oranges and tangerines are some of the commonly used symbols for decoration. It should be ensured that the bad luck is swept away with a broom and the good fortune is welcomed, before beginning the decorations as per the Chinese customs. People begin to decorate their houses 10 days before the New Year by incorporating the color gold, red, blue and white style chinoiserie in their decorations.
Feature
• Chinese Red Lanterns are considered important as hanging them in front of the doors is expected to drive off bad luck. • Door couplets are usually pasted on the doors as they signify best wishes for the coming year. Couplets are brush works of Chinese calligraphy, in black ink on red paper. They are posted in pairs as even numbers are associated with good luck and

auspiciousness in Chinese culture. • Kumquat trees are used for decorations at home as they symbolize a wish for both wealth and good luck. They are a very popular plant seen around in China during the Chinese New Year holidays.
• Pasting red paper cuttings on doors and windows is considered to bring luck and happiness. The theme used for cutting is associated with an auspicious plant or animal as each of them represents a different wish.
