Welcome to our Second issue of Bahrain 101 – and our First Ramadan issue. For this issue we have cut out our listing of Friday Brunches, Business Lunches, and Ladies nights – as well as the Nightlife section, but they will be back next issue with a vengeance (… more listings, more useful info). Bahrain 101 focuses on just 3 things – Dining, Nightlife, and Events! And, we do not try to include every single outlet – there are hundreds out there, rather we just list the best according to ourselves and our readers.

Introduction to Ramadan What is Ramadan? Ramadan is the Islamic month of fasting, but it’s about much more than refraining from eating and drinking from dawn till dusk - giving to charity is also a very important aspect of the holy month. During Ramadan, working hours at government institutions and for all Muslims are reduced from eight to six hours. Many businesses will operate different hours. Shops and malls will typically close for much of the day and be open until late at night instead.
Fasting And Etiquette It is expected that all Muslims fast during the holy month. Exceptions are made for pregnant women and those suffering from a medical condition that could be aggravated by fasting. While non-Muslims are not expected to fast, they are not

supposed to eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum in public. Also, avoid listening to loud music and dress modestly. To engage in any of these activities in public during daylight hours is not only considered offensive, but it is illegal.

Iftar
Eid Al-Fitr marks the end of the month of Ramadan, when the entire community comes together for special prayers and celebrations. There is also the second Eid - Eid Al-Adha - which commemorates the completion of the Hajj pilgrimage.
Iftar is the Arabic word for the meal served at sunset when the Muslims break their fast.
Ghabga After Iftar, Ramadan can be celebrated by engaging in the local custom of ghabga, which translates as “meal at late night”. These are sociable occasions where family and friends gather in often large groups to feast and enjoy the company of each other.
An Islamic term referring to the meal consumed just before sunrise by Muslims – the last meal before starting their day’s fast.
Eid
Dates Ramadan in 2015 will be from around 17th or 18th June until the 16th or 17th July Eid al-Fitr will be from around 17th July Eid al-adha will be from around 22nd September
