Dear Reader, Diwali or Deepavali is the festival of lights celebrated every year in autumn, mainly in India. It conveys the essential message to illuminate the inner light of the Self that requires the triumph of virtue over vice; honesty over treason, and of Atman (Self) over Aham (Ego). We wish our readers to merge yourself in this light of lights and enjoy the supreme Diwali. Best wishes,

ahrain is home to a diverse society which fosters religious and cultural understanding. Bahrain’s values of pluralism, multiculturalism and tolerance are emphasized on each year with the celebration of Diwali when even the Royal family visits the Indian families to join the celebrations. The multi-cultural environment of Bahrain has been welcomed by most of the families as they get to enjoy their favorite festive seasons. The Indian families of Gajria, Kewalram, and Bhatia have generations of roots in Bahrain and they unanimously agree with the efforts of His Royal Highness Majesty King Hamad to ensure moderation, tolerance and pluralism within the Kingdom. These values have contributed to create multicultural environment, which continues to promote cultural awareness and respect of universal values. Diwali

Deepavali

Unlimited Fun and Unlimited Joy

By Anand Nair

Anand R Nair, Vice Principal of Indian Embassy School Bahrain, shares his fond memories of Deepavali and the relevance of the festival on the present day.

T

he lights brighten our path and life always. A source of light is energy redefined! The first impression of Deepavali or Diwali is that it is the festival of lights and only lights. When we watch a traditional lantern lit on a Diwali day, the glow emancipated from the lantern is a blissful treat to watch. No other Indian festival matches the colour and pomp of Diwali. Diwali celebrations in the North India and the South India have a lot of difference. The unifying factor is the happiness associated with the celebrations. A heap of mouthwatering sweets -Chakli, karanji, sankarpali, chivda, peda, barfi, mawa, laddoos, rasgulla, gulabjamun14

come into the mind as soon as you think of Diwali. The bright clothes, prayers, the crackers, scents of incense sticks, colorful rangolis and the sparks of fire; this day has it all. ! With due respect to the Supreme Court of India and the environment, crackers are the pride of Diwali. The sursuris, sutli bombs, rassi bomb, nag goli, rockets (don’t mistake it to be firearms) are all varieties of crackers available. One variety that brought fun to all was the so called apti bomb. It was a small ball with chemicals wrapped in a silver foil. Throw it hard on the ground and a spark and sound comes, to the delight of all children. Still fresh in my memory how every

Bahrain101.com | October/November 2018

household would be cleaned in the neighborhood and ladies took turns to go to each other’s house to make Diwali eatables and delicacies. Some of the places in Maharashtra see the same pattern of homemade lanterns hoisted on the rooftops and buildings. It seemed that the world is decorated for ushering in happiness and peace. Can this Diwali be a contributory Diwali; contributing to the society around? Let us contribute to the world from the share of the blessings of Lakshmi Pooja that happens on Diwali day. Historically Diwali signifies the triumph of the good over the evil. Let us spread unlimited happiness and compassion in this process and illuminate the world around. p

Diwali

Diwali

in India and Bahrain

The first day of Diwali is Dhanteras which is believed to bring wealth and prosperity into the house which is why women traditionally buy gold & silver coins, and jewelry on this day. The second day is known as Chhoti Diwali which is celebrated by worshipping Lord Krishna. The third day is the main Diwali day, which is celebrated by wearing new clothes and performing pooja. The fourth day is known as Govardhan Puja and the fifth day is Bhaiya Dooj which is celebrated by brothers and sisters. Even in Bahrain, the streets of Manama is filled with people during Diwali. A glimpse of how Diwali is celebrated in India can be seen in the Manama temple. All the five days, people gather there for the pooja and for burning crackers. People light diyas outside homes. The elders make delicious sweets in the kitchen and children prepare beautiful & colorful rangolis. In the evening, relatives and friends gather for the party, exchange

Akrity Jain, The Indian School student details her experience in celebrating Diwali in India as well as in Bahrain.

T

he festival of lights -Diwali is the most important and awaited festival celebrated by Hindus across the globe. The festival derives its name from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, which means an array of diyas. Preparations start with a month in advance in India. Elders clean and whitewash their houses and offices and decorate with electric lights. The market places are decorated just like a bride and beautified with colorful ribbons and scintillating lights. Diwali also attracts many foreign tourists to India as the festival of Diwali adorns the beauty of the country all the more. 18

gifts, have dinner and enjoy the night with dance and music. I’m eagerly waiting for this Diwali to have lots of fun and create beautiful memories. I wish you and your family to have a jovial and lighted Diwali. p

Diwali

Essence of

Diwali

Nandini Rajesh, the Indian School student sketches the beautiful image on the celebration of Diwali.

T

he year’s most resplendent revelry, Diwali has finally arrived. The term Deepavali originate from the Sanskrit words, Deep- which means lamps and Avali- which means row and thus meaning rows of lighted lamps. Ironically, this festival of lights, hope and goodness is celebrated on the darkest night of the Hindu month of Ashwin. In this festival, Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess of wealth and prosperity is given prominence to and worshiped and Diwali marks the beginning of the Indian financial year. Diwali celebrations spans over five days starting with Dhanteras occurring two days before Diwali and ending with Bhai-Dooj occurring two days after Diwali. There are many tales associated with Diwali but one commonly believed legend is that Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama from his fourteen 20

By Nandini Rajesh year long exile and vanquishing the demon-king Ravana. In joyous return of their beloved King, the people of Ayodhya illuminated the Kingdom with earthen lamps and fire crackers. The finest and brightest illuminations can be seen in Amritsar and Mumbai. Dark blue skies are embellished with firecrackers, air smells of delicacies as people unite to celebrate the victory of good over evil, hope and life. The city of dreams comes to life during Diwali. Hanging lanterns, lighted lamps, designed floors with colourful rangoli, sweets being prepared, guests swarming in and about being the typical traits of a Mumbaikar’s house during this festival. Sweet shops prepare a variety of sweets originating from the length and breadth of the country. Mumbai becomes shopper’s paradise during Diwali.

Bahrain101.com | October/November 2018

In the olden times, lanterns were made and diyas were painted by the children of the house. Rangoli designs were made from the scratch. All the members of the house were actively involved in some activity or the other. Diwali is not just about food and clothes, but it is one of the few festivals which revolves around creativity, spirituality and euphoria. Diwali is truly a festival that celebrates the spirit of India. Dates of celebration differ, the tales behind Diwali varies as we move from north to south of the subcontinent, but the dazzling lights, the heartfelt prayers and the coming together of families are the essence that makes this darkest night the brightest occasions of the Indian calendar. Religion is forgotten, boundaries are set aside as people unite to celebrate undying hope and the joy of life. p
