H.E. MR. PIYUSH SRIVASTAVA AMBASSADOR OF INDIA TO THE KINGDOM OF BAHRAIN H.E. Mr. Piyush Srivastava, Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Bahrain talks to Gulf Insider about Indo-Bahrain relations, the Indian community in Bahrain, and future outlooks for the two countries.

T

he trade relations between India and Bahrain can be traced back 5,000 years to the Dilmun Civilization of Bahrain and Indus Valley Civilization of India. Ancient Bahraini traders are believed to have carried out flourishing trade of Bahraini pearls with spices from India. Since then, India and Bahrain have enjoyed an unbroken link of engagements and interactions with each other. The merchant Indian families who settled in Bahrain more than two centuries ago and the 200-year-old Shreenathji temple in Manama are a testimony to this fact.

A Multifaceted Contemporary Relationship

India and Bahrain enjoy excellent multifaceted bilateral relations characterized by cordial political, economic, cultural and people to people contacts.

India and Bahrain enjoy excellent multifaceted bilateral relations characterized by cordial political, economic, cultural and people to people contacts. Regular high-level political interactions have been a hallmark of our close bilateral ties. The landmark visit of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, to India in 2014 had set the roadmap for our present bilateral engagement. Our bilateral relations got further boosted and diversified to new and emerging areas during the historical visit of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi to Bahrain in August 2019. Earlier, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s visit to India in 2012 gave further impetus to the relationship. The high foreign policy priority that India attaches to Bahrain was reflected in the recent visit of Hon’ble External Affairs Minister of India, Dr. S. Jaishankar, in November 2020, which was among his first physical visits abroad as soon as the opportunity opened up for the same in these COVID-19 pandemic times. Foreign Minister of Bahrain H.E Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani visited India in April 2021 for the 3rd meeting of India-Bahrain High Joint Commission which reviewed and discussed ways to further push the diverse areas of our bilateral cooperation. Our two sides have robust institutional mechanisms in trade,

economic, cultural, education, security and defence sectors. Despite restrictions imposed by COVID-19, the relationship at all levels have remained stable and strong. Bilateral trade figures have remained stable at around USD 1 billion. Total investment from India to Bahrain, including that of Indian community in Bahrain, is over US$ 1.25 billion-making India the 6th largest investor in Bahrain. Similarly, investments from Bahrain to India have also increased to around US$ 180 million in 2019.

Improving the COVID-19 Situation in India and Bahrain and the Opportunities Our two countries have had excellent collaboration in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic - be it the support of the Government of Bahrain for medical and other care of the Indian community, facilitating their repatriation by ‘Vande Bharat Mission’, the ‘Air Bubble’ arrangement between the two countries for facilitating travel of people of both sides, supply of oxygen, or the supply of medicines, vaccines and facilitating travel of doctors and paramedics to the Kingdom by India. Bahrain is among the most successful countries in dealing with the pandemic, as well as for providing medical, financial and other support to its people. The Kingdom has also taken exceptional care of the Indian diaspora in Bahrain in terms of providing medical and other support, in addition to free vaccination at par with its citizens. I would like to express our gratitude to His Majesty the King, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and Prime Minister and the Government of Bahrain for ensuring welfare of the Indian community, particularly during the difficult times of COVID-19 pandemic. One of the most important parts of maintaining this cooperation between Bahrain and India is connectivity. Bahrain is the only GCC country that never banned flights from India. India also kept its supply lines open for trade, food products, essential commodities, medicines and medical supplies. India had successfully handled the

first wave of the pandemic and has also now swiftly recovered from the severe second wave. By providing speedy medical care to the infected people, enhancing the existing medical infrastructure and creating new ones as well as accelerating the pace of vaccination, we have now been able to contain the spread of the virus. As of today, over 490 million people have already been vaccinated in India, and the daily rate of infection for the whole of India has drastically come down to around 40,000. India’s recovery rate of 97% is among the world’s highest.

Economic and Trade Opportunities As both countries are gradually and cautiously opening up, the focus of both Governments is again on the economic revival and to open up further opportunities for both bilateral trade and investment. Today, the main exports from India to Bahrain include food and agro products, engineering goods, machinery, IT, polymers, jewellery, etc. The main imports from Bahrain include urea, aluminium, iron, steel and other metal products including items for reprocessing. Indian investments in Bahrain are 8

Gulf Insider August 2021

in IT, construction, health, and finance sectors; while Bahraini investments are in sectors of health, real estate, etc. We are working closely with concerned authorities and the private sector of the Kingdom of Bahrain to expand bilateral cooperation into the new and emerging areas of space, fintech, IT, renewable energy as well as existing areas of hydrocarbon, infrastructure, health, education, and agro/food security.

Indian Community in Bahrain The Indian community constitutes almost a quarter of the population of Bahrain and plays a significant role in the economic development of Bahrain. They are a key link of our relations with the Kingdom. Our vibrant community in Bahrain plays an important role in promoting our bilateral ties and further strengthening the existing goodwill between our two countries. It is a matter of pride for all of us that with their professionalism and high standards of work ethics, our community has made a name for itself in Bahrain. This is a fact which has been acknowledged by the leadership of both countries. This has been possible due to

the Kingdom’s rich tradition of diversity, tolerance, co-existence and harmony. The Kingdom has provided an environment where the Indian community enjoys their cultural and traditional celebrations the same way as they do in India.

The Future Path The two countries have a tradition of regular high-level interaction and exchanges, which has been a key for our ever expanding and diversifying bilateral cooperation. With the improved COVID-19 situation in both countries, we hope to see increased visits to each other’s nations of the high-level political and official delegations. Several measures taken by both governments for economic recovery are expected to lead to increased collaboration in trade and investment, particularly in the segments such as health and pharmaceutical, energy including renewables, education, tourism, IT, financial services and infrastructure. Both sides are also working to expand the new and strategic areas of cooperation in space, fintech, defence & maritime security, IT and food security.

J

ust recently, the American University of Bahrain (AUBH) launched two Alexa Skills, adding voice technology to its campus. This is aimed towards providing the students, parents, and educators alike with the ability to use their voice to deepen the learning experience and enrich university life whilst also providing critical academic and campus information. The AUBH Campus Alexa Skill offers convenient ways to navigate the campus. It also provides help in learning 14

about what the University has to offer by asking questions to Amazon Echo devices installed inside the campus buildings. Students will also be able to connect to campus information and events through the AUBH student Alexa Skill. It also integrates with the University’s system, allowing students to access coursework, grades, and other school communication through the Alexa smartphone app. Committed to their promise to offer an innovative, high-tech experience to their students and faculty, AUBH launched these Alexa Skills in confidence that they will provide a unique, customized, and unmatched campus experience. The launch of the new Alexa Skills represents another milestone for the University in driving innovation, not just

locally, but also regionally. It is in line with their “borderless” approach to shaping globally competent and techsavvy leaders. Bahrain has been pioneering in the MENA region on innovation by ranking first for ICT readiness by the UN. The Kingdom is also one of the first in the region to roll out 5G, enabling new technologies like AI, cloud computing, and fintech. The implementation of Alexa Skills at AUBH came after the launch of the region’s first AWS data centers in Bahrain back in 2019. This played an integral role in delivering Bahrian’s cloud-first policy and adoption of cloud technologies by the public and private sectors, especially during COVID-19.

It has a sevenspeed dual-clutch automatic, and the Quattro fourwheel drive system provides outstanding traction.

A

udi’s new S3 is a premium hot hatch that’s both sporty and perfect as a daily driver. There’s a turbo charged 2.0-litre engine under the bonnet that delivers an impressive 290 HP and 400 Nm of torque. This means it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in only 4.9 seconds! It has a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, and the Quattro four-wheel drive system provides outstanding traction. The S3 rides 15mm lower than the regular A3 on its standard suspension set-up, which makes it feel sportier. Twin exhausts on each side indicate that this is no normal Audi. There’s also the option of 19-inch alloy wheels. The S3 looks beautiful on the outside, and the interior is no less

impressive with its high quality, stylish, and luxurious fittings. S-specific front sport seats with rhombus pattern offer outstanding lateral support, and it comes with a Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium Sound System. The infotainment is well-displayed thanks to a 10.1-inch central display. There’s also plenty of space front and back – and I say that as a well-built 6’2’ man (188 cm). The back seats can easily be folded down if you need additional cargo space. I thoroughly enjoyed driving the S3 around Bahrain for the couple of days I had it.

For more information or to arrange your own test drive, call Audi Bahrain at 1745 9933 or visit the Audi showroom in Sitra. Gulf Insider August 2021

HOW TO WIN IN BUSINESS AND LIFE Every month Gulf Insider publish 2 pages that reveal brilliant secrets for winning in business and life. The techniques are provided by top international experts and we will often summarize an entire book into a single page so you can learn the essence of their wisdom in minutes instead of hours. Take the time to learn what we reveal each month and you will be rewarded a thousand times over!

has assistants, chefs, and handlers. You may not have the entourage that Bill does, but you can still stretch your time simply by not wasting it. There are tons of ways to “create” time to focus more on the things you really want to do. Here are a few: Shut off the TV, Exercise at home (save the commute time), Hire a personal assistant, Delegate tasks, Hire a maid. The next time you are about to do something, ask yourself the following questions: n How long will this task take me to do? n Is that the best use of my time? n Am I the best person to do this? n How much would it cost me to buy this rather than make it? How much would it cost me to have someone else do this rather than do it myself?

2. Family - Rich people, if they are

smart, decide how they want to spend their time. And more important, they choose who they want to spend their time with. People who are happy and fulfilled tend to be those who surround themselves with people they love, and that often ends up being family. You may think you don’t have the time to spend you’d like to with people you really love, but you really should question that. Is it really REALLY true?

3. Vacations - Vacations do not need

to be pricey to be fun. But they do have to be meaningful. You can have great vacations as long as you are with the people you want to be with and you enjoy yourselves.

4. Debt - Smart millionaires have

HOW TO LIVE LIKE A MILLIONAIRE, EVEN IF YOU AREN’T ONE

I

t’s true that sometimes the rich have pricier homes, cars and vacations. But when it comes down to the really important things — like health, family, general level of happiness, and sense of well-being, being mega-wealthy just doesn’t matter. If you want to live a millionaire, make 18

Gulf Insider August 2021

sure you focus on those things that will bring you and your family the greatest return on your investment:

1. Time - More than money, time is

your greatest asset. You and Bill Gates have the same 24 hours in a day. Bill is able to leverage his time because he

almost no debt. That creates a wonderful sense of security and wellbeing, which is priceless. If you are in debt, do whatever possible to squash it.

5. Career - The smart well-to-do realize that they must enjoy the way they spend their day. That means they are very conscious of the work they take on. If it’s not satisfying, they make a change. You have more power than you think to get a different job or even change your career if your current situation leaves you less than satisfied. Don’t settle.

Experts Reveal Life Secrets

The ‘procrastination demon opportunity detector’ works for big-picture projects, too. If you’re

all-consumed with $10 per hour busy work, you have no time to stop and ask yourself, “What salvo should I launch next week that will double sales next year?” That question makes you squirm. The more disconcerting, the better. It challenges the status quo. Whatever gives you a queasy feeling - that plan probably belongs on the top of the stack.

Make constructive use of the time you liberate. I urge entrepreneurs

to hire house cleaners and personal assistants to free themselves up from mundane activities. What do you do with the extra two hours a day you free up? You could fritter it away - or go nuclear on your business strategy.

Perfectionism is the root of all evil. Most of us soothe our anxieties

and stay mediocre by perfecting things that don’t need to be perfect at all. You spend 15 minutes editing that email before you press send. Most procrastination isn’t doing nothing, it’s doing what’s comfortable and mediocre.

THE 80/20 RULE And Listening to Your Inner Procrastinator By Perry Marshall

I

’m a passionate advocate of the 80/20 rule, which says 80 percent of your sales come from 20 percent of your customers. It applies to most other aspects of business and life as well, like how you spend your time. I’ve discovered that your inner procrastinator -- if you pay close attention to him -- tells you exactly what you should be doing. The top 20 percent activities that produce 80 percent of your results are the very same things that trigger you to procrastinate. Eventually I had to cloister myself in a library with no Internet to craft the marketing for a business move that scared me deep down. Whenever my inner procrastinator tells me to check Twitter or iron my shirts, instead of

what I’ve planned, I know I’m on to something good. I switch it around. It’s not that we don’t want to work. It’s that we’re afraid of doing work that will move the needle. Most of us are afraid of success. Here are tips on how to direct your inner procrastinator to your advantage:

Flip your daily to-do list. You wake up and list the 10 things you need to do today. Odds are, one item is worth 10 times more than the rest. Our natural human tendency is to put it off until later, diverting into mundane tasks like Facebook. We invent devilishly clever reasons not to get that one thing done. Do it. Now. (Or at least after you finish reading this article.)

Weekends off. I’m a huge advocate of taking the weekends off. Instead of wasting time on busy work such as checking email, everyone should create space where they pray or meditate -- or simply do nothing. Your best business ideas will come when you’re not working. When you’re having fun doing what you enjoy doing, whether it’s reading novels or tossing a baseball with your kids, that feeds your creativity. I learned this the hard way. I spent years with the pedal to the metal, working seven days a week. It got me nowhere because I was not doing what I needed to do most. Use your “procrastination demon opportunity detector.” Choose the thing that makes you most anxious. Then head straight into the wind, because those anxieties are merely birth pangs of a larger success.
