Audi A8 - 2018

Crypto is still in its infancy and has an incredibly bright future. Look at the growth of the tech sector from the early 1980s to today. In the 1970s before personal computers became common, there was serious doubt (even within the industry) that consumers would ever adopt the technology. Share prices of tech companies languished for years. But then Microsoft went public in 1986. Microsoft’s stock price exploded, doubling in its first 12 months, and increasing 10x in four years. But by the early 1990s the tech boom once again ran out of steam. Share prices languished again as the market had no idea what was coming next. Then, in the mid 1990s people caught wind of this thing called the “Internet. And so the investment bonanza continued. This cycle has repeated itself again and again… with mobile, social media, e-commerce, etc. This is a pretty reasonable comparison to cryptocurrency. It’s similar to the early 1980s when people thought that these technologies were just fads… or that the tech stocks were already expensive and they had missed the opportunity to invest. Millions of people felt that way about Microsoft stock in 1990, after it’s value increased 10x in 4 years: “I missed it, the opportunity is gone.” But Microsoft’s share price grew by another 10x before the end of the decade. And it’s up 100x today. People are saying the same thing about crypto. Right now, crypto is dominated by small investors. If you want to by $1,000, or even $1 million, worth of crypto, you can.

Bridging the Digital Gap Gulf Insider shares a conversation with Waqfe’s CEO, Ashar Nazim

12

Gulf Insider June 2018

Money & Business

W

aqfe is a digital platform that allows people to bank anywhere and anytime in a fast and friendly manner. Waqfe aims to bridge the gap between banks and consumers by making the banks digitally relevant. With Waqfe, customers will be able to open a bank account within minutes from anywhere in the GCC through a smartphone, tablet or laptop. Just recently, we had the opportunity to discuss a few things with its CEO, Ashar Nazim.

At Waqfe, we work with banks to reclaim that experience space with a moments led approach.

There is a lot of talk about digital disruption in banking but you think that misses a bigger point. Can you explain? Google did a survey about the ‘coolest brands for teens’ last year. Out of the dozens of brands they ranked, not even a single bank was included in the running! One can only find a bank in the most hated list and that too, was because of their business practices. This is not in any way, a reflection of the sector they are in. Does this mean that banks are not cool? Well, not quite. Banks are.... well

they’re just there. Most of the time people do not think about them. Banks have been filed under the category “Not really disappointed because I don’t expect much”. They’re firmly in the purgatory of the customer’s consciousness. Should banks worry about digital disruption? Definitely! But every sector is in digital’s line of fire. For me, the real problems banks face are their untethered connection to the passion and lifestyle of the customer. It is arguably the largest, most unacknowledged crisis in banking. Digitalization is to solve this crisis.

How can Waqfe address this emotional disconnect between banks and customers? This issue is certainly a large reason for why we exist. Banks are very good

at launching products and before the digital age, this kept the banks relevant. However, in the digital age, they lost whatever mindshare they had to digital-first companies obsessed with moments. Companies in retail, video streaming, car sharing etc. became integral to their customers’ lives and turned the customer experience dial to delight, leaving banks out in the cold. They are now directly competing with banks even here in GCC. At Waqfe, we work with banks to reclaim that experience space with a moments led approach. We make banks emotionally relevant to customers. When you consider that emotionally engaged customers can be up to eight times as profitable, the stakes are high. Waqfe manages this with its unique community-banking platform, which allows banks access to Waqfe’s finnovative channel and partner ecosystem. You get to challenge every established norm. Campaigns, communication, engagement, onboarding experience, cross selling, loyalty program – everything has been torn apart and then re-assembled. The market response has been phenomenal from the customers’ lens this time. Transparency has been central to this success. It’s about giving the banks’ customers control over their financial management. It’s about showing respect to the customers. A powerful emotional bond is created as a result, that reinvents how customers feel about their banks. This is especially critical for the comparatively young population in the 50-million GCC market.

We see that you are introducing a unique loyalty program. How does it address the major pain points of Millennial and Gen Z households? For too long, banks have relied on restaurant discounts and air mile incentives to woo customers. This isn’t working anymore; certainly not for the bulk of the market that are younger and more ambitious. The younger, digital savvy population is most concerned about their future. Their loyalty belongs to banks that can help secure their communities and help design their futures. Gulf Insider June 2018

13

Money & Business

Waqfe’s reward program addresses this concern. The personalized purposebeyond-profit angle that Waqfe brings via its unique reward program flips the current paradigm on its head. To youths as well as to their households, this means access to a variety of social benefits such as internship opportunities, scholarships, tuition fee discounts, access to vocational training and international placements. If you look deeper, this is about creating a lifetime relationship with the most attractive segment of the market.

for months to come. Waqfe’s digital platform allows for anytime anywhere banking, opening bank accounts in less than 7 minutes, without the need to walk into the branch. It effectively opens up the GCC market for banks beyond the national borders. The API based open banking system means our partner banks are able to integrate with the world of fintech without worrying about their legacy systems. The platform is at the nexus of three exponential technologies namely, mobility, data and artificial intelligence.

rates and tenor to exponentially build out their customer base. Banks are facing other pressures too. In some markets they need to start meeting strict financial ratios. I see all of this contributing to the perfect storm of consolidation. Simply put, not all banks are going to make it. We believe going digital quickly with Waqfe is part of the strategy of winning in this competitive era.

So how will banks save cost and time with Waqfe’s digital banking platform? We know of banks who have spent years and over 200x what our partner banks have spent to go digital. This is a region rife with over budget and digital projects delivered past deadlines. With Waqfe’s technical and functional expertise, banks can go digital under budget, on time and with same year top line growth. They can increase their deposits, increase profitability per customer, and reduce churn. At the same time, they can penetrate the under-banked younger Gen Z and Millennial generation.

What is your main goal at Waqfe?

What other problems does Waqfe solve for banks? There are two business problems that we solve for our partner banks. One, we make banks digitally relevant again. The Platform as a Service concept is relatively new to the region and only for the bold. It helps banks look beyond their legacy technology system without the need to spend tens of millions of dollars. And it speeds up their time to market. A case in point is a leading Islamic bank in Bahrain where we implemented the digital banking platform in less than four months and at a fraction of the capital expenditure that they had budgeted. The chief executive of the bank is on record saying this is a stellar success story he will be sharing 14

Gulf Insider June 2018

We believe going digital quickly with Waqfe is part of the strategy of winning in this competitive era. The second problem we solve is the low customer profitability for majority of banks in the region. This is about dramatically reducing cost of customer acquisition and creating that emotional connection to remain at the top. The community angle is a game changer. It helps our partner bank to look beyond

We want to change the basic impression of how good is done in our communities. For banks, Waqfe is about bringing purpose back to the core of banking. For consumers, Waqfe is about making it incredibly convenient for them to do good, based on some very simple financial choices they make. The ability to do good is embedded within their digital lifestyle without disturbing their banking convenience.

How does the future look for Waqfe? Market response to Waqfe’s finnovation has been tremendous. At current pace, we will sign up an exclusive set of 10 partner banks across the GCC and help them go digital with certainty. Over next three years, the plan is to work alongside our partner banks to help them acquire 1 million customers and USD 10 billion in deposits. This, we believe, will be the point of inflection. The journey would then begin.

Personal info scam culprits to be fined up to BD20,000 The fine for exposing personal information of individuals against their will using the Internet may be increased to BD20,000, which is 400 times the existing BD50 fine. The proposed amendment increases the existing punishment for publishing photographs or comments relating to individuals private or family lives from serving an imprisonment sentence not exceeding six months and/or paying a fine not exceeding BD50. Submitted to the council’s Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee on March 14 this year for approval, the bill stipulates replacing the punishments mentioned in Articles 354 and 370 of the Kingdom’s Penal Code with tougher penalties. Article 370 stipulates that “a prison sentence for a period not exceeding six months and a fine not exceeding BD50, or either penalty, shall be inflicted upon any person who publishes by any method of publication news, photographs or comments relating to individuals’ private or family lives, even though they are true, should the publication thereof be offensive thereto”. As for Article 354, it reads that “a punishment of imprisonment for no more than three months or a fine of no more than BD20 shall be inflicted upon any person who is found in a public road or in a place frequented by the public inciting pedestrians, by words or signs, to indulge in vice”. If implemented, the proposed law would punish those proved to commit the crimes mentioned in both articles by imprisonment not exceeding three years and paying a fine not less than BD10, 000 and not exceeding BD20, 000.

Bahrain commutes prison terms to community service & special programmes The jail sentences of 11 women in Bahrain have been commuted to community service and participation in a rehabilitation programme, Attorney-General Ali Al Buainain said. The women were found guilty by a court of law, but with the Alternative Punishment Law being ratified in Bahrain last year, the judges commuted their sentences. The law was first applied in October when a septuagenarian had his two-month jail sentence commuted to house arrest. The defendant was found guilty of claiming he was working in a lawyer’s bureau and took 2,200 Bahraini dinars from an individual as fees for legal services. A court of first instance sentenced the elderly man to two months, but his lawyer requested the sentence be commuted to community service, given his advanced age. The judge accepted the plea and initially ordered that the defendant work as a gardener at a ministry for two months, but later changed it to house arrest after the lawyer argued that his client was suffering from poor health.

Expat caught selling fake jewellery walks free An Asian salesman who sold fake jewellery to a customer convincing him that the product belonged to a renowned brand, was acquitted by the High Appeals Court citing lack of proof. The defendant was earlier held guilty by the High Criminal Court which fined him BD500. The initial ruling was cancelled by the High Appeals Court in the process. The defendant was working as a salesman for a local company which was caught selling fake jewellery and was charged with collaborating in crime. However, his lawyer Ibtisam Al Sabagh argued before the court that her client wasn’t aware that the products weren’t genuine, stating that he was a mere salesman in the company. “My client maintained his innocence since the moment he was questioned and there is no proof that can hold him guilty.” The High Appeals Court agreed with the lawyer’s argument, confirming that there weren’t sufficient pieces of evidence to convict the defendant. The case was filed against the defendant on May 8, 2013, almost five years ago.

Bahrain cleared to buy 3,200 US bomb bodies for $45 million The U.S. State Department has cleared Bahrain to buy as many as 3,200 bomb bodies to arm its fleet of F-16 fighters. The sale could be worth as much as $45 million, but DSCA notifications do not represent final sales. If cleared by the Senate, the potential sale enters negotiations, meaning dollar totals and quantities can change. The U.S. would provide from its own stocks the bodies of 1,500 MK-82 500-pound general purpose bombs; 600 MK-83 1,000-pound bombs; 600 MK-84 2,000-pound bombs, and 500 BLU-109 2,000-pound penetrator warhead bombs, according to a Defense Security Cooperation Agency announcement. The U.S. considers Bahrain, a major non-NATO ally, an important partner in the Mideast. The purchase of these munitions will bolster the Royal Bahraini Air Force’s ability to conduct and sustain air operations with its F-16 combat aircraft. Bahrain will use these munitions to deter regional threats, strengthen its homeland defense and execute counter-terrorism operations, according to the announcement. The announcement also says there will be no adverse impact to U.S. readiness or the balance of military balance in the region. Bahrain is to become the first country in the region to operate Lockheed’s F-16 Block 70 aircraft, expected to boost the Falcon’s production line.

Female dentist fined for running clinic without licence A female dentist was fined BD2000 by a Bahraini court for operating a dental clinic in Muqsha village without a licence in the Kingdom. The court also ordered police to shut the clinic and seize all medical equipment used by the woman, who is an Asian by nationality. According to the National Health Regulatory Authority norms, all medical personnel in the Kingdom are obligated to fulfill its licensing requirements. Investigators also found that the owner of the property, a Bahraini female dentist, has had her license expired three years ago. “I applied for a license for her (the Asian dentist), but I wrote her passport number wrong in the application. Thus, it got delayed,” the owner of the clinic told prosecutors before she was caught for holding an invalid licence. 18

MPs propose to grant coastlines open for public Bahrain, the island with no public coasts as described by some MPs, may not have completely private coastal projects anymore if the country’s MPs vote for a controversial proposal. This comes as a parliamentary committee recently approved a bill that instructs to allocate 50 percent of each private coastal project on the island to serve the public. Services Committee in the Council of Representatives passed the bill after conducting 24 meetings over a span of three years and despite several reservations from the part of the Government. The bill stipulates that half of the coastlines of private investment, housing, industrial or commercial projects established on natural or artificial islands in the Kingdom must be developed and open for the public. According to the five MPs who submitted the bill on April 6, 2015, implementing it would end any monopolisation of coasts on the island and grant citizens and residents the opportunity to enjoy the shorelines of Bahrain.

How to get strong FAST! If you are a beginner to strength training and want to know if it’s possible to get strong fast, then I have good news for you.

S

ignificant strength gains in beginners should be very fast. During the first couple of months of correct training – and proper nutrition, it’s not unusual to see increases in strength of at least 20–30%, even up to 100% in the first 3 months. Maybe that’s too good for you to believe, but there are hundreds (actually thousands) of official studies from respected sources that prove this, and I see it proven daily with my own students. So why do beginners make such rapid progress? It’s because most development during the first training months is due to neural adaptations. The nervous system learns to activate more muscle fibers and the firing rate of neural impulses increases. There are also improvements in muscular coordination as muscles learn more efficient ways to work together. All these changes in muscle activation contribute to strength gains – meaning that your muscular coordination gets better.

There are also improvements in muscular coordination as muscles learn more efficient ways to work together. So, if you’re not gaining strength very fast in the beginning you can only be making some serious training, nutrition and/or recovery mistakes. Obviously, as you get stronger your gains slow down. For intermediate level trainees, with correct training and nutrition, studies show that strength increases of up to 10–15% are typical. The more experienced you are, the more important it becomes to customize your training to suit your

own particular needs and body type. For maximum gains, correct training must be combined with good nutrition and adequate rest periods to enable your body to recover between training sessions.

After a successful amateur career where he achieved a +4 handicap and represented England, Chris turned pro in 2007. Having moved to Egypt in 2009 Chris began a six-year tenure at Stella Di Mare Golf & Country Club in Ain Soukhna, where he graduated the PGA and worked his way through the ranks including a stint as a teaching professional to become Director of Golf before joining Troon in 2016. After almost 9 years in the region, Chris is near-fluent in speaking Egyptian Arabic.

What first attracted you to golf? My father was an excellent golfer – he had a +1 handicap. He used to take me to play when I was nine years old, but I didn’t take the game too seriously as I was into other sports. When I reached eighteen I became a lot more interested in the game.

What are your plans for the club? I want to increase recognition for the club and what we offer. I think there’s a fantastic team working here and that

After successfully working in Egypt for 9 years, what made you decide to come to Bahrain? My nine years in Egypt was a happy time for me, but I believe change is healthy. I had already visited Bahrain in 2010 and liked what I saw, so when the opportunity came to transfer to Bahrain through the Troon network I decided to go for it.

How does Bahrain compare to Egypt? There are similarities between the two places. Bahrain is hotter. Egypt is nosier and there’s too much traffic. That said, being based at beautiful golf courses you hardly notice it, far from all the noise and hustle. To be honest, I haven’t had much chance to really explore Bahrain yet, but I’ve received a warm welcome from everyone I’ve met here.

You learned to speak Arabic while living in Egypt – Mabrook. How does it compare with the way the language is spoken here in the Gulf? The way it’s spoken here is very different. Most people can understand me, but unfortunately I can’t understand them. Fortunately, everybody here speaks English. But people have told

I look forward to enhancing the work they are already doing. I really want to get the message out that the club is open for everybody. I also want to keep adding to the guest experience, which involves a constant and relentless attention to detail.

Any fun events coming up? How is the Royal Golf Club different from other clubs you have visited? The Royal Golf Club is open to all, and has less stuffy rules than many clubs. It’s the only grass course in the country and offers a five star hotel type experience for visitors. Families visit and while the father is out on the greens the rest of the family will

So far I’ve had six sessions over two weeks and I haven’t seen any weight loss; however I’ve lost an inch from my waist and am feeling much more agile, stronger and dare I say it, fitter. I’m also sleeping better and feeling great. If that’s what’s happening after a mere two weeks then I can’t wait to see where I’ll be in another two weeks. I love the feeling of rewarding myself by using the luxurious swimming pool, sauna and steam after a session as it somehow makes going to the gym feel indulgent and not a chore. More than anything though, I’m feeling proud that I took that first step and signed up. It’s not easy, but it is worth it. See you in July!

It was made much easier by being in what can only be described as a five star luxury setting. Visions of myself gently luxuriating in the stunning indoor and outdoor swimming pools, relaxing in the garden hammam’s sauna and steam rooms followed by a Jacuzzi were soon superseded by the formidably wonderful Grace, my new personal trainer. So what’s happening at Bahrain Islamic Bank (BIsB)? The bank is launching various innovative initiatives, services and products, along with a state of the art information and communication technology infrastructure. 34

“New technology is fast changing Bahrain, and not only in banking.” I salute what the bank has been able to do this past year. I only joined the bank 6 months ago. I have a background in international banking and in my last position with another financial institution, where I was for sixteen years, I viewed BIsB as growing

competition. Three years ago BisB management, under their new CEO, initiated their current strategy and recently we have come with a new promise, banking re-imagination, asking what could we do as a proposition for our customers alongside their individual banking needs.

Tell us about BisB’s digital innovations If I look on what happened this past year, digitalization is a prominent pillar. We have been revamping our current online banking alongside the introduction of BisB Digital, our mobile app. We have also recently opened

New technology is fast changing Bahrain, and not only in banking. We now have online stores, online delivery, and even online groceries. I think Bahrain is still behind but I see the government supporting ventures that keep up with the advancement. There is definitely a change and I’m glad that we are going in the right direction. On digitalization, we are aggressively going forward. Our app is constantly being improved and now has voice recognition which can strengthen both accessibility and security for its users. We believe that we have a strong advantage over most other banks in our ability to grasp new digital opportunities.

Any new innovations for your high net worth customers? We have just signed up with Peacocks, the international personal concierge service. This enables our clients to take advantage of an increasing range of luxury services for example, we now have an exclusive

Bahrain is the next distressed-debt target: US hedge fund

Chinese Oil giants eye Bahrain Bahrain is reaching out to global investors to help the country explore its recently found oil and deep gas resources, located off the country’s west coast. Bahrain so far is not sure how much oil and gas can actually be recovered from new assets. Chinese oil giants are in talks with Bahrain over developing assets in the country, but China should be cautious about overdependence on oil imports from the Middle East, an expert said. Bahrain has invited Chinese companies to invest in the country’s oil assets, including a newly discovered oil field that reportedly contains up to 80 billion barrels of tight (or shale) oil, Bahrain’s oil minister said. Bahrain is also talking with Sinopec, another major oil and gas producer in China. “But most of the discussions so far have been with CNPC… We are very positive about the opportunity to do business with CNPC in Bahrain,” he said. Neither CNPC nor Sinopec commented as of press time. As well as the new discoveries, the Bahrain government is also inviting overseas companies to invest in the country’s traditional oil and gas assets like the Bahrain Field, a major oil source for the country. In 2016, Bahrain exported about $104.3 million-worth of refined petroleum to China, down from $163.3 million one year earlier, according to the latest available data from the Central Informatics Organization in Bahrain. Bahrain’s invitation comes as China is speeding up oil investment in the Middle East. According to a report by Reuters on March 21, PetroChina, a subsidiary of CNPC, will take a 10 percent stake in two of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company’s offshore concessions under a 40-year agreement. Lin Boqiang, director of the China Center for Energy Economics Research at Xiamen University, said that China’s oil imports from the Middle East currently account for about 40 percent of the country’s entire oil imports. “I think the Middle East, particularly Iran and Saudi Arabia, will be China’s largest source of oil imports for a long time to come, not only because they have ample oil resources, but because of their relatively complete infrastructure network and the fact that China has been a long-term partner with them,” Lin said.

Greylock Capital Management, a hedge fund that holds the distressed bonds of Mozambique and Venezuela, says Bahrain is its next potential target. Bahrain will have to revive its financial fortunes to prevent its debt from slumping to distressed levels, according to Bashar Zakaria at the California Public Employees’ Retirement System, the largest US pension fund. “There’s been a lot of chatter around some of their fiscal stresses,” said Hans Humes, the chief executive officer of New York-based Greylock Capital Management, which specializes in emerging-markets distressed debt. The central bank’s foreign assets dropped in March to the lowest level in seven months and the International Monetary Fund expects the island kingdom’s debt to exceed 100 percent of economic output in 2019. Bahrain has enough net foreign assets to last it for up to three years, fueling concerns it may struggle to keep its currency’s peg to the dollar, according to Bloomberg Economics. Still, Central Bank Governor Rasheed Al-Maraj said the country has enough foreign reserves to maintain the currency’s peg, as a recovery in oil prices help ease pressure on its public finances. Bahrain’s dollar-denominated bonds plummeted this year, with the debt maturing in 2029 touching 87.2 cents on the dollar. Bahrain, the Gulf’s smallest economy, has been relying on debt sales to finance budget and current-account deficits. It scrapped an offering in March after investors sought higher yields, but raised $1 billion from Islamic securities. The nation’s debt is rated junk by the three major rating companies.

Bahrain set to grow in international stature Be it the Saudi’s diversification strategy away from oil embodied by Saudi vision 2030 or UAE’s smart city developments and EXPO 2020 plans, these two coutnries are making the headlines. But Bahrain is now claiming its own stake after literally striking oil, at least in theory, and now its plans have taken a new direction: Compete for a large stake of GCC business. And truth be told that Saudi and UAE’s accelerated implementations of their visions are helping fuel Bahrain’s high spirits and own ambitions. Bahrain is well positioned to benefit from an expected trade boost brought about by the liberalization and economic growth of Saudi Arabia, Zayed Al Zayani, the country’s minister for industry, commerce and tourism told CNBC recently. “By having a more liberal and accessible Saudi Arabia we all stand to benefit from that,” said Al Zayani. “We already have a large industrial base in Bahrain that’s predominantly orientated to Saudi Arabia and the rest of the region.”

Bahrain’s National Oil and Gas Authority (NOGA) announced the launch of an energy fund that looks to raise $1 billion from institutional, domestic and international investors to develop the country’s energy assets, Kallanish Energy, an industry site, reported. The fund will be open to investors in Bahrain, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and internationally, according to Kallanish Energy. Bahrain recently announced an oil discovery off its west coast, estimated to contain some 80 billion barrels of tight oil. Good news for Bahrain’s budget deficit which reached as high as 17.8% of GDP in 2016 and would be no less than 12% of GDP in 2018 as predicted by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Bahrain’s hydrocarbon-related revenue accounted for 75% of government revenues in 2017 and 55% of exports, figures sure to increase when exploration concludes. Rating agency Moody’s reported that Bahrain has an oil output of around 198,000 bpd of which around 150,000 bpd comes from an offshore field that it shares with Saudi Arabia, a country that produces just around 10 million bpd. Bahrain’s current account swung from surpluses averaging 8% of GDP in 2012-13, to deficits averaging 3.7 percent of GDP in 2015-17,” analysts told CNBC. “The reserves have since recovered somewhat on the back of large sovereign external bond issuances, including $3 billion in international bonds in September 2017 and $1 billion in international sukuk (Islamic bonds) in April 2018.” Bahrain’s dwindling foreign reserves stood at $2.8 billion at the end of November covering only 1.4 months of imports of goods and services and less than 10 percent of Bahrain’s short-term external debt, according to CNBC.

5,000 expats deported for violating labour laws According to the latest statistics released by the Supreme Judicial Council, 5, 294 expats were sentenced to deportation after they were convicted in various cases related to the violation of the work titles mentioned in their residency permits between the years 2015-2018. This was unfolded within the reply of the Supreme Judicial Council to queries of the Services Committee in the Council of Representatives, which is planned to vote this week on a bill that shows more leniency towards convicted expats by scrapping compulsory deportation and the prohibition of re-entry either permanently or for a temporary period of not less than three years as a penalty. Submitted by MP Mohammed Al Maarifi last January, the bill aims to amend a clause in Act 19 of the year 2006 with regard to the regulation of the labour market. The proposed amendment scraps the existing text which stipulates compulsory deportation of foreign workers found guilty of “engaging in any work in the Kingdom without a work permit issued in accordance with the provisions of this act.” The proposed amendment suggests fining convicts BD100 and granting judges the jurisdiction to deport the convicts in accordance with their offence, instead of mandatorily deporting them as per the instructions of the current law.

MPs attempt to tax expats rejected AGAIN

Bahrain’s oil minister warns of a potential ‘supply crunch’ Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Bahrain’s oil minister, warned that investment in the sector is still not quite at optimal levels, which could cause supply concerns in the future. Speaking to CNBC’s Hadley Gamble at the Gateway Gulf Investor Forum in Manama, the Bahraini oil minister discussed the challenges that remain since the global oil price drop in 2015. “One of the risks we have to be careful of is investments. Since the prices dropped in 2015, they have not really come back,” Al Khalifa said. “And if you don’t invest, you might face very soon a supply crunch.” “It was quite responsible for OPEC to try and get the level of investment back,” the minister went on. “So the question remains: is the investment back? And I think the answer is not quite. That still might suggest a potential supply challenge in the very near future.” But in terms of where the markets are, “they are quite balanced,” he said, describing shale oil production in the U.S. as the enduring disruptive factor. “The unknown remains how quickly U.S. shale will react. But the worries about natural decline of conventional oil since no investments have come are probably the real concerns that OPEC will probably have to focus on.” The tug-of-war between U.S. shale and OPEC has been an overarching narrative in oil markets this year, with shale production expected to curb the upward push in oil prices despite an OPEC-led deal to limit production and other market disruptions like Venezuela’s economic crisis and the recentlyannounced reimposition of U.S. sanctions on Iran.

Lawmakers in Bahrain have resisted two attempts to make expatriates pay new taxes for owning cars and for sending money home. A draft law submitted by MPs said that every foreigner who owned a car should pay BD40 in annual registration fees, double of what Bahrainis pay. The lawmakers who presented the draft said that 90,000 foreigners owned cars in the kingdom and that doubling registration fees would mean extra cash annually for the state. The proposal, supported by MPs Ahmad Qarata, Ghazi Al Rahma, Jamal Dawood, Jameela Al Sammak and Abbas Madhi, had been earlier rejected by the foreign affairs committee as unconstitutional. However, the lawmakers went ahead with it and sought to convince their peers of its merits for generating extra revenues. Other lawmakers said that foreigners sending money home should be made to pay a remittance fees for the state. However, the proposal was rejected on the ground that it would be discriminatory on the basis of nationality and could cause the emergence of a parallel financial market that would harm Bahrain’s reputation as a commendable financial centre.

Bahrain has the 2nd highest employment rate – Report At 59%, Bahrain has the second highest employment rate among full time working adults, according to a new Gallup global job figures, released recently. The UAE ranks as the world’s number one country with the highest percentage of adult population in “good jobs” and is third among countries with highest percentage of adults in “great jobs”. According to Gallup’s new global job figures, 59 per cent of adults in Bahrain work full-time for an employer – the second highest rate in the world. However, a much lower percentage, 9 per cent, have full-time jobs that “engage” them, defined as great jobs. Other three among the top five countries providing good jobs include Estonia (49 per cent), Russia (49 per cent) and Singapore (48 per cent). According to the report, good jobs are full-time work for an employer, while great jobs are full-time work for an employer that engages the employee. The new report examines the distribution of quality jobs across the world. While the percentage of adults with good jobs averages 28 per cent, no country has more than 13 per cent of its adult population in great jobs. Great jobs are especially valuable to employees and employers alike because they boost workplace productivity, safety, retention and well-being. Figures on good and great jobs worldwide are collected by the Gallup World Poll, a global initiative to measure the quality of people’s lives worldwide.

Take the time to learn what we reveal each month and you will be rewarded a thousand times over!

5 Reasons Getting Up Early Could Make You More Successful

I

t might be time to change your sleep patterns and see what greeting the day earlier can do for your career because it’s been proven that the most successful people tend to be early risers.

Why are some people early risers?

Our sleep cycles are regulated by circadian clocks, which is an internal mechanism letting you know when to wake and when to tuck in for the night. Modern technology and artificial lighting has played a bit of havoc with the circadian rhythms. If you just can’t seem to drag yourself out of bed in the morning, don’t feel too bad. It’s possible you’re just a natural night owl. Research has discovered about 10% of people are early birds, while about 20% are night owls.

What’s the link between early mornings and success?

While studies show evening people can often be more creative — and sometimes even smarter — than morning people, our working lives naturally cater to early risers. 42

Gulf Insider June 2018

The success secrets early risers already know - While about 50% of your chronotype is due to genetics, it’s not impossible to change your attitude towards the sunrise. Here are a few reasons to do so:

1. There are less distractions in the morning - A typical day can get crazy,

fast. You have family obligations, friends, your career, your expanding inbox, and a to-do list a mile long. It’s easy for the personal items to fall off your list, like that book you’ve been dying to read or the jog you’ve been meaning to take. These personal items, however, can help you de-stress and carve out some time for yourself. For most people, it’s easier to carve out this personal time in the morning then it is after work. When the rest of the world is quiet it’s easier to find the time and space for some much needed “me” time.

2. Successful people are already doing it - Early birds know greeting the

day early is the key to success, which is why morning people tend to be so successful. Apple CEO Tim Cook is known for sending emails at 4:30 a.m., while both Richard Branson and Vogue Editor Anna Wintour get up around 5:45 a.m., which is when Wintour plays a round of tennis. Successful people have limited time in their day to accomplish tasks and take personal time, which is why they get an early start.

3. You’ll be more productive - In 2008, Harvard biologist Christoph Randler discovered morning people were also more proactive. They were more likely than their night owl counterparts to agree with statements like, “I spend time identifying longrange goals for myself.” Early risers know to keep an eye on the future, and to never stop looking for ways to better themselves and keep their abilities sharpened. 4. You will have time for breakfast

- Everyone says breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but how often do you really have time for a good breakfast? Early risers have more time

Experts Reveal Life Secrets

in their mornings, which means fewer excuses not to eat a healthy breakfast. A survey from the Harvard School of Public Health recently found skipping out on breakfast may increase coronary heart disease risk, so having the time to schedule in a good breakfast is more important than you might think.

5. You’ll be happier - Not to knock night owls, but research has actually shown morning people tend to be both happier and healthier. According to a University of Toronto study, morning people also self-report higher levels of happiness.

6 Business Skills We Can Learn From Attorneys

L

awyers possess a skill set and an array of talents that are actually in high demand by many businesses. Let’s see how.

1. Client Management - In a business, any business, whether it sells a product or provides a service, there are people it sells to or works closely with that need to be managed and attended to (call them customers or clients or partners or stakeholders or shareholders or advisors or any number of other descriptive terms). These real, live, human customers need to be understood, coddled, directed, serviced, up sold, excited and reigned in. Working with clients is something we lawyers do day-in and day-out. This skill is essential to a company’s relationship building, reputation growth, client retention and customer support.

2. Upselling - If a business provides value to its customers, the customers will naturally come back for more. But oftentimes, businesses need to proactively suggest and highlight potential products and services and future projects to their captive customer base. This of course helps the business grow its revenue, and also provides a valuable service to a

customer by (sincerely) suggesting other products and services to which the customer can avail him or herself. Whether we realize it or not, we attorneys are always upselling. Attorneys with close client contact will often suggest other courses of action, other defenses to approach, other research and analysis angles, other agreements to put in place, other services to consider, other advisors to contact. Upselling new ideas is instinctual for us.

3. Issue Spotting - In business, there are always issues, messes, projects, and things to figure out. Something always goes wrong, and a solution to fix it needs to be hatched. Or something goes phenomenally right and this new opportunity presents a multitude of new options. As such, decisions need to be made, strategies need to be devised, communications need to be delivered, next steps need to be agreed upon, and teams need to be created to execute. This is what we do daily; assess the mess of options and gradually spot the issues that affect the business most, objectively prioritize actions, and then make educated decisions on what to do next. 4. Clear And Concise Prose Attorneys write. A lot. And we write well. We write clearly, precisely and in a thoughtful, informative manner. And we can do all of this in less time and with less confusion than many non-lawyers can. So much of business nowadays is also about writing: People from all types of companies write … emails, proposals, reviews, and reports. And it’s a sad fact, but across many businesses, so much of this content is not written well: It’s unclear, grammatically incorrect or just plain indecipherable. People go back and forth trying to understand each other or send multiple versions trying to come to a final result. Time is wasted, important issues are misunderstood, frustration grows, productivity is reduced. 5. Dependable and Disciplined Things need to get done, fires need to be put out, projects need to be

kickstarted. The person that just gets stuff done on time, even if it’s not perfect, is of immense value. We lawyers are solid people. We meet deadlines. We are used to keeping confidentiality, professional ethics, and fiduciary duties. In short, we have been regulated our whole lives as practicing lawyers, it has distilled in us a distinct sense of responsibility and duty that is indispensable for businesses.

6. Working Long Hours - Attorneys work into the evenings throughout the work week. We come into the office around noon on Sundays. We work around the clock when the deal or the trial requires it. Going the extra mile (and miles after that) is expected as a lawyer.

9 TimeManagement Tips We list some of the best timemanagement tips there are. 1. Prioritize - If you didn’t finish something by the time it was due, it’s because you didn’t consider it urgent enough to prioritize over other things. Know the one thing you really need to get done that day and focus your energy into getting that done as soon as possible.

2. Know that days fill up faster than expected – We’re always more

4 Strategies For Remembering Everything You Learn

focused and productive with limited time, so set shorter time limits for tasks.

3. Set deadlines for everything

- Don’t let tasks go on indefinitely, which only leads to stagnation. Get things done and move on.

4. Create blocks of uninterrupted work - Schedule meetings/emails/

phone calls back-to-back to create blocks of uninterrupted work - You’ll disrupt your flow if you’re reaching out to people throughout the day.

5. Plan on 4-5 hours of real work per day - Don’t kid yourself into thinking that sitting at your desk will somehow extract work from you. Do whatever you can to finish your current task by the end of regular work hours instead of working late.

6. Work more when you’re in the zone. Relax when you’re not -

Some days you’re distracted, some days you’re focused. Take advantage of those days. Studies reveal the brain expends energy as it readjusts its focus between different tasks. If you’re spending your day multitasking, you’re exhausting your brain.

7. Break down tasks into manageable blocks - Instead of

focusing on results, focus on actions that will lead to them. Start with small tasks to get your mind on the right path. Gen. George S. Patton said, “A good plan executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week.”

8. Delegate - Learn to make use of

other people. To be truly efficient, get over the fear of handing work off to someone else – delegate!

9. Take notes - Don’t assume you’ll

remember every good idea that comes into your head during the day. Write stuff down.

Gulf Insider June 2018

I

f you’re going to learn anything, you need two kinds of prior knowledge: knowledge about the subject at hand, like math, history, or programming, and knowledge about how learning actually works New education research shows that low-achieving students have “substantial deficits” in their understanding of the cognitive strategies that allow people to learn well. This suggests that part of the reason students perform poorly is that they don’t know a lot about how learning actually works. It’s a culturewide issue. Henry Roediger and Mark McDaniel, psychologists at Washington University in St. Louis and coauthors of “Make It Stick: The Science Of Successful Learning,” say that “how we teach and study is largely a mix of theory, lore, and intuition.” So let’s cut through that lore. Here are learning strategies that really work.

1. Force yourself to recall - The

least-fun part of effective learning is that it’s hard. In fact, the “Make It Stick” authors contend that when learning if

difficult, you’re doing your best learning, in the same way that lifting a weight at the limit of your capacity makes you strongest. It’s simple, though not easy, to take advantage of this: force yourself to recall a fact. Flashcards are a great ally in this, since they force you to supply answers.

2. Don’t fall for fluency - When you’re

reading something and it feels easy, what you’re experiencing is fluency. It’ll only get you in trouble. Example: Say, for instance, you’re at the airport and you’re trying to remember which gate your flight is waiting for you at. You look at the terminal monitors — it’s B44. You think to yourself, oh, B44, that’s easy. Then you walk away, idly check your phone, and instantly forget where you’re going. The alternative: You read the gate number. Then you turn away from the monitor and ask yourself, what’s the gate? If you can recall that it’s B44, you’re good to go.

3. Connect the new thing to the old things - “The more you can explain about the way your new learning relates

Experts Reveal Life Secrets

to prior knowledge,” the “Make It Stick” authors write, “the stronger your grasp of the new learning will be, and the more connections you create that will help you remember it later.” When you’re weaving in new threads into your pre-existing web of knowledge, you’re elaborating. One killer technique is to come up with real-life examples of principles you’ve just uncovered. If you’ve just discovered heat transfer, you could think of the way a warm cup of cocoa disperses warmth into your hands on a cold winter’s day.

4. Reflect, reflect, reflect - Looking

back helps. In a Harvard Business School study, employees who were onboarded to a call center had 22.8% higher performance than the control group when they spent just 15 minutes reflecting on their work at the end of the day. “When people have the opportunity to reflect, they experience a boost in self-efficacy,” HBS professor Francesca Gino tells us. “They feel more confident that they can achieve things. As a result, they put more effort into what they’re doing and what they learn.” While reflecting may seem like it leads to working less, it leads to achieving more.

7 Ways To Have Incredibly Productive Mornings By James Clear

H

ere are eight strategies that I’ve found to be most effective for getting the most out of my morning:

1. Manage your energy, not your time. - You are better at doing certain

tasks at certain times. For example, my creative energy is highest in the morning, so that’s when I do my writing each day. By comparison, I block out my

afternoons for interviews, phone calls, and emails. I don’t need my creative energy to be high for those tasks, so that’s the best time for me to get them done. And I tend to have my best workouts in the late afternoon or early evening, so that’s when I head to the gym.

2. Prepare the night before. - If you only do one thing each day then spend a few minutes each night organizing your to–do list for tomorrow. When I do it right, I’ll develop a short list of the most important items for me to accomplish. It takes 10 minutes that night and saves 3 hours the next day. 3. Don’t open email until noon. Nobody is going to email you about a true emergency (a death in the family, etc.), so leave your email alone for the first few hours of each day. Use the morning to do what’s important rather than responding to what is “urgent.” 4. Turn your phone off and leave it in another room. - Or on your

7. Develop a “pre–game routine” to start your day. - My morning routine

starts by pouring a cold glass of water. Some people kick off their day with ten minutes of meditation. Similarly, you should have a sequence that starts your morning ritual. This tiny routine signals to your brain that it’s time to get into work mode or exercise mode or whatever mode you need to be in to accomplish your task. Additionally, a pre–game routine helps you overcome a lack of motivation and get things done even when you don’t feel like it.

The Power of a Morning Routine

- Just as it’s rare for anyone to experience overnight success, it’s also rare for our lives crumble to pieces in an instant. Most unproductive or unhealthy behaviors are the result of slow, gradual choices that add up to bad habits. The good news is that exceptional results are also the result of consistent daily choices. Nowhere is this more true than with your morning routine. The way you start your day is often the way that you finish it.

colleagues desk. Or at the very least, put it somewhere that is out of sight. This eliminates the urge to check text messages, Facebook, Twitter, and so on. This simple strategy eliminates the likelihood of slipping into half–work where you waste time dividing your attention among meaningless tasks.

5. Work in a cool place. - Have you ever noticed how you feel groggy and sluggish in a hot room? Turning the temperature down or moving to a cooler place is an easy way to focus your mind and body. 6. Sit up or stand up. - Most

people sit hunched over while staring at a screen and typing. When you sit hunched over, your chest is in a collapsed position and your diaphragm is pressing against the bottom of your lungs, which hinders your ability to breathe easily and deeply. Sit up straight or stand up and you’ll find that you can breathe easier and more fully. As a result, your brain will get more oxygen and you’ll be able to concentrate better. Gulf Insider June 2018

What’s Euro Motors doing for Ramadan? We are making things easy and transparent for our customers with a special Ramadan offer that is the same regardless of any car they choose, with the only exceptions being the BMW M5 and I8. All our cars automatically come with a three year manufacturer’s warranty

Once someone is a BMW customer then they should remain a BMW customer because of the quality of the car and the way it drives, and because of the excellent way we look after customers. as standard, and for Ramadan we have boosted this to five years. We are also including a full five years’ service package, a years’ free insurance, and with some cars we are even throwing in an Apple i-phone X and free paint protection that usually costs BD400.

Everyone already knows that BMW is a great brand, but what’s your biggest challenge specific to selling BMWs’? The only negative comments we ever get about BMWs is many people fear the cost of ownership. This is why we are promoting this Ramadan offer. We appreciate these are difficult times for many so we are removing the risk and expense of ownership by offering guaranteed trouble free motoring for five years. Customers only need to put fuel into their new car and they can drive away. I suppose another challenge, which is specific to Bahrain, is that it’s difficult

to establish a used market as many of our customers tend to keep their BMW for life, for example passing it from husband to wife after a few years, and then a few years later passing it on to the kids. These motors are reliable and have status, so people often want to keep them in the family.

everything to potential customers so they can make the choice that best suits them.

Finally, what BMW would you recommend to a young person? I like nothing better than seeing a new customer driving a BMW for the first time because it’s good for me, and

You’re coming up to your first year as Euro Motors GM. What do you seek to achieve?

I believe that once someone is a BMW customer then they should remain a BMW customer because of the quality of the car and the way it drives, and because of the excellent way we look after customers. My aim is to win back customers who have defected to other brands. I also want to share with people the advantages of leasing a car instead of buying it outright. Leasing takes all the risks out of car ownership but not many know about this option in Bahrain. I’ve been involved in the UK motor trade all my life and almost all sales are now from leasing because it enables people to drive the sort of car they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford. People should certainly learn the advantages of leasing before they buy their next car. Our professional sales team can explain

y first experience of the new A8 was in the back as a passenger. Reclining in the spacious and comfortable back seats while being chauffeured I felt like a sheikh. From the back seat I was able to change the colours of the subtle interior strip lighting – ice blue was my favorite, closely followed by orange. It’s as technically advanced as any car on the market, including offering advanced levels of automated driving. There’s all sorts of luxury options. There’s even an optional foot massager for back seat passengers – unfortunately the car I was in didn’t have this option fitted. Pity, I would have loved to try it out.

noise cancellation through the audio system’s speakers. I kept checking the rev counter when the car was stationary to make sure the engine was still running. The build quality of both the exterior and the interior is superb – the word ‘craftsmanship’ comes to mind. Of course, all cars at this level are superb. Still, the A8 ticks every box. It’s comfortable front and back, crammed with technology, near silent, has huge amounts of power, looks impressive, and can almost drive itself! It poses a very real threat to the MercedesBenz S Class, which of course is its intention. For engines, you have a choice between a 340 hp turbocharged 3 liter V6, or a 460 hp twin turbo 4 liter V8. And a 449 hp hybrid will be launched soon. Acceleration is impressive – the V8 provides zero to 100 kph in just 5.9 seconds with a regulated top speed of 248 kph. For such a big car it has relatively good fuel economy according to the specifications. All-wheel drive, eight-speed, and air suspension are standard. An optional active suspension system scans the road ahead for imperfections and then automatically adjusts the car’s suspension accordingly. To be honest, I thought some of the gadgetry unnecessary, such as the remote parking function which only works in spaces so big that only the most insecure driver would consider using it. But this is the same for every

car I have so far tried. No doubt in a few years’ they will improve this particular technology so it becomes something genuinely useful. I could hardly hear either the engine or anything outside while driving. This is thanks to a combination of excellent sound insulation and active

Is YOUR car’s AC a health hazard? Scientists discover dangerous bacteria living and breeding in systems

Motorists are being urged to clean the air conditioning units in their cars after researchers found potentially dangerous bacteria living and breeding in systems. With the weather warming up, the study shows drivers may be putting their health at risk when they reach for the cool switch. Bacteria associated with meningitis, urinary tract infections

and septic arthritis were among the many types discovered in air conditioning filters. Swabs of 15 air conditioning filters were taken from cars and sent for laboratory analysis. Micro-organisms were detected in all of the filters tested at London Metropolitan University. The most common was Bacillus licheniformis, a bacteria most commonly associated with birds and soil. Eight out of 15 of the filters tested positive for this micro-organism, which is among a type of bacteria known to cause food poisoning. Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus were the second most common micro-organisms found. Bacillus subtilis are normally found in the gastrointestinal tract of humans and some mammals. They generally do not cause disease but have been known to cause septicaemia in a patient with leukaemia. Bacillus is more dangerous and has links with a wide range of infections including meningitis, abscesses and septicaemia. A car’s air con works by mixing fresh air from outside with a refrigerant and the mixture turns into liquid as it is cooled. It is then turned into vapour as it travels through evaporation coils and blown into the cabin as cool air. It is the evaporator in the system that provides perfect conditions for bacteria, mould and fungi to build up and thrive. Although the car filter will prevent many pollutants entering the passenger compartment, it will not stop all micro-organisms. On average, the test found 1.6 different strains of micoorganisms within the filters.

Dubai Police crackdown against illegal modification of cars The Dubai Police launched a month-long campaign to spread awareness among the youth about dangerous impact of modified vehicles. The campaign themed Our Youth, aims at spreading awareness among community members and parents about the harmful impact of driving modified cars. The police have seized 89 vehicles which breached modification standards in 2017, compared to 101 in 2016. However, in 2017, there was no accidents caused by car modification, compared to four accidents in 2016. The UAE already has rules against illegal modification of vehicles. The mechanical department of the police will check the cars that are involved in accidents to confirm whether they were modified. Counsellor Salah bu Froushah said that parents will be held responsible if the driver is under 18 years of age and will have to pay compensations in addition to blood money in case of accident deaths. Garages will be closed if they do not heed to police 54

warnings and are found to be modifying exhaust systems or adding devices to boost the vehicle’s speed without prior permission from the police.

Bahrain: Car sales hit by hike in oil price The increase in petrol prices since the beginning of this year had its toll on the local automobile market, according to car showrooms owners and managers. They say the prices of vehicles with bigger engines, usually consuming more petrol, have dropped by around 15- 20 per cent since the prices of gasoline were hiked. These cars were among the top-selling categories in the Kingdom before the oil price rise. The petrol price rose following Oil Minister Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa’s Resolution 1 of 2018. The resolution was announced on January 8 and ever since, the prices of Jayyid (91-octane) has been increased from 125fils/ litre to 140 and Mumtaz (octane-95) from 160fils/litre to 200. A similar decision was announced in 2016 by the former Energy Minister Dr Abdulhussain Mirza, raising the prices from 80fils/litre for the Jayyid fuel to 125 and from 100fils/litre to 160 for the Mumtaz. It was the first petrol price increase in Bahrain in three decades.

Bahrain: Vehicle Registration to be made easier The Kingdom of Bahrain is eyeing the adoption blockchain technology in bid to cut the cost of maintaining the country’s vehicle registration data. Bahrain’s General Directorate of Traffic (GDT) announced on Thursday a new plan to develop a blockchain-based vehicle registration system in the country and is now looking for a technical partner to focus on the system’s design and implementation. Shaikh Abdulrahman bin Abdulwahab Al Khalifa, director general of the GDT, said in a statement: “This registry will be a vital advancement in reducing the overall cost of maintaining critical vehicle information, offer greater efficiency in terms of supply chain management, and ensure a high level of transparency for all stakeholders in the vehicle registration ecosystem.”

Saudi authorities have clarified that women will be permitted to drive motorcycles, vans and trucks in addition to cars. (They also cleared up a question over whether vehicles driven by women will have special number plates. They will not.) The decision to lift the driving ban, announced seven months ago, is one of the most prominent moves by the ambitious young crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, as he presses ahead with a much-trumpeted process of modernizing the kingdom. It is a historic step, female activists say, but they point out that Saudi Arabia remains one of the world’s most restrictive countries for women. Meanwhile, a shortage of driving schools for women, the high cost of classes and Saudi authorities’ alleged intimidation of women who campaigned for the right to drive have dulled some of the initial euphoria. Hanan Abdulrahman weaves through traffic cones on her black Suzuki motorcycle on a deserted motor-sports circuit on the outskirts of the Saudi capital. The 31-year-old in a yellow learner’s jacket has one word for what this feels like: “Freedom”. The scene is new for conservative Saudi Arabia, where, as of June, women will finally be allowed to drive. Abdulrahman learned to drive at age 14, taught offroad by her father in the hopes that one day she would be able to get a license of her own. He was particularly happy at the news that women would finally be allowed to drive. She said she is nervous about the reactions she might encounter on the streets in June. But she doesn’t think much about the notion that she is making history.

Twitter user @Laam_92 simply and defiantly captioned her contribution to the trend: “I will drive Others suggested that the men who “give themselves the right to interfere in something that concerns women” were “losers”. While many of the responses to the hashtag were light-hearted, some shared a more serious analysis of the trend. Sarah Al-Otaibi wrote that “this disgusting hashtag” was being used “to threaten women who might even think of driving”.

Saudi: Traffic signs redesigned to address female drivers

With only weeks remaining before Saudi women take to the road, the Kingdom is preparing drivers for one of the most dramatic reforms in the country’s history. The Kingdom has called on women with overseas licenses to have them replaced with a Saudi license. Women drivers will undergo a driving test and be evaluated on their knowledge of the Kingdom’s road rules. If successful, women drivers will be given their Saudi driving license on the same day. Women in Saudi Arabia who have a foreign or international driving license recognized by the Kingdom will be

exempted from the driving test for beginners. Some men have taken to social media to vent their dissatisfaction with the change in the law, using an Arabic hashtag that translates as: “You won’t drive.” However, the hashtag went viral when Saudi women began hitting back at the sexist remarks. Lots of women posted funny pictures and videos to accompany their response to the hashtag. A number of women decided to use the phrase to post pictures of their dream cars. One user shared a photograph of a

Saudi social media users were widely sharing pictures of redesigned traffic signs that address both men and women drivers. The signs carried messages that read: “My brother driver, My sister driver, abiding by traffic regulations protects your own life and the lives of others from danger.” The traffic signs grabbed wide attention because they are for the first time directed at drivers from both genders.

Is it smart to BUY

Instagram followers? Social Media Tactics - Part - 3 View more Insider Tactics FREE by visiting Fabianca.com

Y

ou can grow your Instagram following the honest way- crafting a thoughtful strategy, sharing great content, and engaging your audience. Or you could take the quick and easy path and join the dark side of Instagram marketing by buying followers.

Why buy Instagram followers? Brands, celebrities, and influencers have been known to pad their social media stats by adding fake followers. Why do they do it? It’s about perception. The number of followers is something that many people look at when sizing up an account. If you’re thinking about buying Instagram followers, it might be because you’re looking for a quick thousand followers to get the ball rolling, hoping that will encourage real people to check out your brand.

But you get what you pay for. In most cases that’s bots and zombie accounts.

Real life case study Hootsuite, the company behind the leading social media dashboard created a dummy account to test whether or not it’s worth buying followers. They opted for a tool that promised 1,000 “quality” followers for $9.95 USD. Within a day their audience grew from zero to 1,000 followers. They then posted a photo to see how engaged their new followers were. The result was zero – not a single Like or comment. Even months later, not a single follower had engaged.

Is it worht it?

How buying followers works

An easy way to measure a page’s engagement is to take the number of Likes and comments the last 10 posts receive, then divide that by the number of followers. Multiply that number by 100 and you’ll have the engagement rate and know if followers are connecting with a page.

Buying Instagram followers is cheap and easy with many services charging around $3 USD for every 100 followers.

Anyone taking a close look at your follower list can spot a stretch of fake and inactive accounts. If you buy

followers and your real customers find out, can you expect them to trust you? What’s more valuable to your business: having 10,000 fake followers or 100 real followers who comment on your posts and potentially share them with their own networks?

How to grow your Instagram the right way Know your audience, engage them, use relevant hashtags, and share great content. Those are the key ingredients of a winning Instagram strategy. Instagram also has various paid advertising options to drive brand awareness, website traffic, product sales, and app downloads.
