New Bahrain airport passenger terminal set to open in first quarter of 2020 The new Bahrain International Airport passenger terminal will open during the first quarter of 2020. Transportation and Telecommunications Minister Kamal Ahmed made the announcement as he chaired the meeting of the national committee, which was tasked by HRH the Crown Prince to undertake preparations for the new terminal opening. The meeting was attended by main strategic partners, including the civil aviation affairs, the airport passports and immigration, the customs affairs as well as the companies working at the airport and the Bahrain Airport Company (BAC). The minister stressed the crucial importance of the Operational Readiness and Transition (ORAT) phase which requires highest level of coordination with all main strategic partners at the Bahrain International Airport, representatives of the public and private sectors. “The transformation of a newly-built terminal into a fullyfunctional airport is a multi-layered process that requires coordination and time to ensure the advanced systems and equipment of the new building work without any errors before its soft opening”, he said.

The comprehensive development project of the water park will be completed by May 2020, announced the Ministry of Works, Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning. The ministry’s statement stated that the development, with a cost of more than BD2.5 million on an area of 6.57 hectares, included a complete rehabilitation of the park including the re-establishment of green and water surfaces, establishment of service facilities, car parking and a botanical garden. Minister of Works, Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning, Eng. Esam Khalaf, has earlier stated that the first stage of the project included building an outer wall, construction of a power station, a guard room and some services. He noted that the second phase of the project would be completed in the last quarter of 2019. He assured that the Ministry gives priority to increasing the number of parks and entertainment venues and ensure their spread in various governorates as part of Bahrain’s Vision 2030. He pointed out that the water park project was unique baring in mind its historical value. He explained that its design takes into consideration the historical features of the park, which are represented by walks and perennial trees. The park, he said, was divided into family spaces, children’s play areas, a wooden bridge, a space for sports, as well as green grasslands that cover the park. The park, he added, also contained a number of investment buildings, such as a cafeteria and a restaurant with an area of 946 square meters, in addition to a number of service buildings such as administration building, room, hall and public facilities.

Jewellery Arabia 2019 13 Luxury Watches for Men Reviewed

J

ewellery Arabia will be held this year from 19th – 23rd November at the Bahrain Exhibition and Conference Centre. The event is the largest and most prestigious jewellery exhibition in the Middle East. Held under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain, Jewellery Arabia consistently attracts over 550 exhibitors from 30 nations; whose exhibits range from incredible finished jewellery to luxury time pieces, to precious stones of every size, shape and cut. To commemorate Jewellery Arabia 2019 we are reviewing some of our favorite luxury watches for men, many of which are available to buy at the exhibition. The old saying “you are what you wear” is still true. It is not just shoes which make the man, it’s also his watch. A man’s watch is far more than just a way of keeping track of the time - a well-chosen timepiece is an accent for his aesthetic. Needless to say, selecting just 13 watches from a choice of many hundreds is a subjective process and opinions will differ about our selection. However, our review team have done their best – based on their own prejudices of course - and believe all of these luxury men’s watches are exceptional from a functional and material perspective, while also looking impressive – sometimes, even artistic.

Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Diver Chronometer US$ 5,999.00 The face of the watch is a striking deep blue with analog arms maintaining the minute and hour count. Bad news for Saudi economy, says IMF

Roads and streets of Bahrain ranked 25th globally The Kingdom of Bahrain ranked third in the Arab world and 25th globally in the Road Quality Index according to the Global Competitiveness Report 2019, published by the World Economic Forum (WEF). The report showed progress in the Kingdom’s ranking in the road quality index as it has advanced six places compared to last year, indicating that Bahrain is one of the eight best countries in Asia in the quality of highways. Bahrain pays great attention to the development of roads and public streets projects. allocating 24% of the GCC support scheme for the development of the road construction sector. The budget included 11 projects, most notably the Bahrain North Highway project, with a budget of BD 94 million, and the construction of the road leading to the city of Salman worth BD 75.18 million. In addition to the project of developing Sheikh Jaber Al-Sabah Street – the intersection of Alba and Nuwaidrat- and the project of the exits of the East-Hidd Housing Project. It is worth mentioning that the Global Competitiveness Report is one of the most important global reports that monitor the performance and competitiveness of the economies of the world countries in terms of strengths and weaknesses, and their repercussions on the living standards, the prosperity of their people. Oman ranked first in the Arab world and 14th in the world, while Saudi Arabia was fourth in the list with a global ranking in 34th place. The fifth-place went to the first non-Gulf Arab country, Morocco with a global ranking in the 43rd place, while Kuwait ranked sixth in the Arab world and 63 globally, and Jordan ranked seventh at the level of Arab countries and 68 in the world.

Even in a year that’s shaping up as a disappointment for the global economy, Saudi Arabia will stand out. The International Monetary Fund, which just lowered its 2019 global growth forecast for a fifth straight time, is turning far more downbeat on Saudi Arabia’s prospects, cutting its outlook for this year to just above zero. Among the biggest economies, only Italy will fare worse, it said. The kingdom’s gross domestic product will expand 0.2% in 2019, down from the fund’s earlier estimate of 1.9%, according to its World Economic Outlook published on Tuesday. The IMF also expects a more modest pick-up next year, with a gain of 2.2%. “While non-oil growth is expected to strengthen in 2019 on higher government spending and confidence, oil GDP in Saudi Arabia is projected to decline against the backdrop of the extension of the OPEC+ agreement and a generally weak global oil market,” the IMF said. Despite an acceleration in non-oil growth this year to the fastest since 2015, output curbs negotiated by OPEC are increasingly a drag on an economy where the energy sector accounts for about 50% of GDP. The attack on Saudi oil infrastructure last month also put the spotlight on risks ahead. “The impact on growth of the recent attacks on Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities is difficult to gauge at this stage but adds uncertainty to the near-term outlook,” the IMF said.

Why privacy laws are serious business Keypoint Senior Director, Srikant Ranganathan, argues that data protection laws are here to stay – and will impact how all of us treat data.

T

he recent announcement that Bahrain’s Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments will monitor and regulate compliance with Bahrain’s Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL) finally puts to bed any suspense on who would take on the role of regulatory watchdog for legislation which came into effect on 1 August 2019. Introducing a strong privacy and monitoring framework should significantly strengthen Bahrain’s efforts to lead digital adoption and growth – at least across the GCC - through initiatives like its cloud first policy, the open banking framework, the digital sandbox and eKYC (electronic know your customer) - and many others. A stable, secure and reliable data privacy

platform should give people sharing personal data information comfort that their data will be protected. According to the Economist, the world’s most valuable resource is no longer oil, but data. This is, admittedly, quite a hard argument to win: although five of the largest global businesses may well be data-driven, crude oil is a tangible liquid that is refined into many of the products that we can no longer live without (Bahrain in summer without AC is not as appealing as it used to be) whereas data – while it may be personal – tends only to have value to its owner(s). The PDPL includes restrictions on direct marketing activities, the sharing of information and the retention of information beyond agreed timelines.

Any entity or person that acquires and processes data - either directly or through a network – will now be held accountable for how that data is processed. Compliance means technical and organisational controls need to be defined, implemented and monitored – by both the ordinary man or woman in the street and functions within organisations - to protect the personal (and sensitive) data that they manage. Of course, organisations in Bahrain should already have implemented data controls to protect the data they hold. From this perspective, rather than increasing controls, the law clarifies responsibilities, further protecting data owners. In the future, it should be easier and quicker to assign responsibility and accountability for

privacy violations. However, readers shouldn’t automatically assume that the law is a panacea for all data issues – and nor should they simply assume that the law will always find in favour of the individual. In Europe, organisations which have suffered data leaks or some other form of privacy violation but were able to prove that the privacy controls required by the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) were in place were found not to be liable. Recently, Google – which has faced a number of data protection issues –

misused – although it has delisted over 1.5 million web addresses in response to almost one million requests. The ECJ ruled that there is no obligation under EU law for a search engine operator that de-references a data subject to de-reference all versions of its search engine. On the other hand, the significant fines - €110m against Marriott International for insufficient technical and organisational measures to ensure information security which led to the exposure of the personal data of approximately 340 million hotel guests globally or €204m against British Airways after the data of 500,000 customers was compromised – should be more than enough to persuade most CIOs and CFOs that data protection – whether here in Bahrain or globally – should be an immediate, high priority focus. Bahrain’s PDPL – unusually – includes both financial and criminal penalties. Data protection laws are not going to go away – and we should all be very glad about that. Adoption of the spirit of data privacy – and the understanding that data needs to be protected - by all stakeholders should usher in an era of better transparency, trust and sharing all round.

The French privacy regulator, CNIL, had ordered Google to remove search result listings to pages containing damaging or false information about a person. In response, in 2016, Google introduced a geo-blocking feature that prevents European users from being able to see delisted links. Saudi Arabia

is now open to tourists

S

audi Arabia’s recent decision to open its doors to international tourism has created quite some excitement throughout the travel industry. A vast and until now largely closed country is now there to be experienced. This is all part of the kingdom’s push for economic reform in order to decrease its dependence on oil.

The kingdom has pledged to relax its strict dress codes for female visitors, and to allow women to travel to the country unaccompanied. But, women will still need to dress modestly in public, and non-Muslims will still be forbidden from visiting the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. • Visas can be obtained online for nationals of 49 countries

• Women are only required to dress “modestly” and do not have to be veiled • Unmarried couples can now share hotel rooms, breaking a longstanding taboo in this religiously conservative Islamic society So what can Saudi’s new tourists expect to see?

Al Wahbah volcanic crater In the middle of the desert, some 250 km (155 miles) away from the city of Taif, is Al Wahbah - a large volcanic crater with a salt field in its centre. Al Wahbah has become popular with hikers in recent years, although it is a challenge. As the crater is 820 ft deep, it takes competent hikers about two to three hours to get down to the bottom and back up again. For those hoping for something a bit less active, it is also a popular camping spot. 30

Masmak Fortress in Riyadh Masmak Fortress in the Saudi capital Riyadh was first built in about 1865 - but it is most well known for what happened 37 years later. In 1902, the exiled royal, Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman bin Faisal Al Saud, returned to his ancestral hometown Riyadh and seized this fortress. Saudi reforms meet resistance

Some businesses in Saudi Arabia are not following through on the government’s liberalization plans.

S

ome business owners in Saudi Arabia are refusing to follow out the Crown Prince’s relaxation of laws, according to reports from visitors to the kingdom. A 42-year-old female teacher from Canada, who recently visited the country, said that a security guard at Dhahran mall in Dhahran, northeast of Riyadh, stopped her friend from entering because she was not in full Islamic dress. The guard said that he would follow

his employer’s rules and not those of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. ‘No abaya, no entry,’ the guard was reported as saying. Malls and other private businesses are able to set their own regulations for what they consider appropriate dress. This can include adhering to the absolute Shari’ah that was - until the end of last month - applied to both foreigners and locals in the country. The Saudi Commisson for Tourism responded to a request for clarification

of the law by confirming that businesses are able to decide what is worn on their premises: ‘As is the case in businesses across the world, businesses may set their own dress codes. ‘The new guidelines are being issued to businesses clarifying public policy and encouraging them to provide clear information to their employees and customers,’ they said. At the end of September, Saudi Arabia announced it would throw open its doors to foreign tourists from 49

countries, including the UK and US. The introduction of the Saudi E-Visa for 49 countries is an attempt to diversify the country’s economy and to prepare it for a post-oil future. Up until recently, men and women caught mingling in public, even foreigners, faced severe punishments. Further announcements in the following days promised a series of dispensations to relax foreign women having to wear Islamic dress in public.

for a post-oil future. He hopes to achieve 100 million annual visits by 2030. At present, the country relies on oil for 70 per cent of its export earnings. A 28-year-old IT developer from Riyadh, who has spent 10 years of his life living and studying in France and the UK, said that the older, more conservative generation, are those who are resisting the ‘badly needed’ reforms.

This, paired with allowing unmarried foreign couples to sleep in the same bed in hotel rooms, hopes to attract people who may have been put off in the past. Premarital sex falls under the category of adultery according to Shari’a law and, for unmarried Saudis, having sex outside of wedlock risks imprisonment, stoning or the death penalty. Up until the recent announcements, these laws also applied to tourists. For decades Saudi Arabia has been a closed country with visas only awarded to those on business or attending pilgrimage to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. In line with MBS’s 2030 vision plan, the de facto ruler of the country aims to diversify Saudi’s economy in preparation

‘People who are opposing it [the new laws] are old people who have no idea what’s happening now,’ he said. ‘And they better accept the new changes and not disagree with it because it is badly needed.’+5 The Saudi source added that Muslim clerics - the source of religious guidance for many Saudis - have ‘acknowledged that we were too extreme’ and are modifying their prescriptive sermons to ‘stay in power’ and keep favour with the royal family. This has included preaching that it is okay for tourists to ignore some religious customs because they are not Muslim. To achieve the staggering number of visits needed to move away from oil-dependence, MBS is trying to brush up Saudi’s reputation to make it more appealing to the rest of the world.

Saudi Arabia aims to turn red sea ‘green’ Key ecological targets are driving Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea tourism megaproject, its leader has told Arab News. The project is taking shape in a 28,000 square kilometer region of lagoons, archipelagos, canyons and volcanic geology between the small towns of Al-Wajh and Umluj on the Kingdom’s west coast. Nine islands are deemed to be so crucial to the ecology that they will not be built on at all, and access will be carefully controlled. One island, Al-Waqqadi, looked like the perfect tourism destination but was discovered to be a breeding ground for the hawksbill. The Red Sea has warmer sea temperatures and higher salinity values, yet the coral thrives. Scientists are also working to explain why the area’s coral reef system — fourth-largest in the world — is thriving when others around the world are endangered. On-site construction will be kept to a minimum by the use of prefabricated units built elsewhere in the Kingdom and then shipped to the Red Sea for assembly and installation on the islands. He will have to have 3,000 hotel keys by 2022 when phase one of the project is complete and ready to welcome the first of 300,000 annual visitors.

Jackie Chan says he wants to make films in Saudi Arabia

Martial arts movie star Jackie Chan has announced that he wants to make films in Saudi Arabia after being honoured with the Joy Excellence Award in Riyadh. Chan, along with Jean-Claude Van Damme, Aquaman star Jason Momoa and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, made his first visit to the kingdom which lifted a decades-old ban on cinemas last year. The Joy Entertainment Industry Forum was a two-day event organized by the Saudi Arabian General Entertainment Authority (GEA) and brought together leading global entertainment personalities and executives interested in investment and growth opportunities in the kingdom’s entertainment sector. The forum highlighted Saudi Arabia’s developing entertainment sector, one that is expected to generate 200,000 jobs and attract local and global investment exceeding $69 billion by 2030. “It’s my first time in Saudi, and I know it’s a big country. After only a few hours [travelling] here and looking at locations I know there’s a good place for car chasing, explosions, action; so, next time, I hope to come back with my crew,” he was quoted as saying.

Saudi considers women to perform Hajj without male guardian

Bahrain: ‘Ensure the accuracy of ewa meters to avoid billing errors’ A lawmaker has urged the Electricity and Water Affairs (EWA) Minister to ensure the accuracy of EWA meters following complaints. MP Isa Al Dosari said meters provided by the EWA should be subjected to technical tests before being installed. His questions were addressed to EWA Minister. “When will the new meters will be completely installed? And what would be its additional costs on the citizens?” the lawmaker asked the minister. Absurdly high water and electricity bills had been received by many citizens and residents a few months ago, owing to a technical glitch. Some residents have received preposterously high bills, much to their surprise, sources said. It is learnt that the errors were caused by water meter readers following the digital updation process. Speaking to Tribune, a citizen, who doesn’t want to be identified, said his electricity bill was in the normal range while the water bill was absurdly high. “The water bill was extremely high and I contacted the authorities regarding this. I was told that the issue arose due to a technical glitch, which will be rectified soon. The bill I received was for my office. Later, I would find that all the offices in the building received similar amounts in water bills,” he said. “I found out that the issue was due to a glitch in the water meter reader. Apparently, it counted the units, not in a linear manner, rather in a haphazard way. This led to a massive uptick in the water bill.” Another Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) customer said that he received a high bill despite being outside the country. “I was not at all at home during that month and in spite of this I received a huge bill. I can’t believe this as I am someone who keeps control on the use of electricity and water,” the customer said.

Women of all age groups could be allowed to perform the Hajj without a male guardian with the government studying various visa options. Marwan Shaaban, chairman of the Haj and Umrah Committee at the Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), said this was agreed upon during a meeting he held with Minister of Haj and Umrah Mohammed Saleh Benten. Deputy Minister Abdul Fattah Mashshat, investors in the Haj and Umrah sectors, hoteliers and many other concerned officials attended the meeting, which discussed the difficulties the sector faces and the future of the Umrah visas to electronic tourist visas. Umrah firms have raised their concerns about the impact of regulations, saying they are losing out and warning around 200 companies will be leaving the market if authorities do not step in. Shaaban said during the meeting the minister agreed to study the cancellation of the condition of Mahram for women of all ages in order to issue them with Umrah visas.

Bahrain oil investments hit $8 billion Oil investments in Bahrain have reached $8 billion over the past few years, Oil Minister Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa said on the sideline of the 5th Middle East Process Engineering Conference and Exhibition (MEPEC 2019). The National Oil and Gas Authority (NOGA) has signed an exploration and production agreement with Italian company “Eni”, which is expected to start drilling bloc (No 1) of the first oil well in the northern maritime by the end of this year or early next year, the minister said. He said that the oil and gas development projects include Banagas expansion project, LNG terminal project, oil pipeline project, Bapco expansion project and airport tanks project.

How to convince anyone of anything in 10 seconds By James Altucher

Y

ou’re on the most important elevator ride of your life. You have 10 seconds to pitch — the classic “elevator pitch.” And you may never get this chance again. There are books about this. But don’t waste your time. They are all garbage. I’ve been on both sides of this equation. The ideas below have worked for me in the times I have had to be persuasive. I hope variations on it can work for you. You decide.

Who are you?

People want to know they are talking to a good, honest, reliable person whom they can trust and perhaps even like. You have to do method acting. Imagine what your body would feel like if they already said “Yes” even before you open your mouth. You would be standing up straight, smiling, palms open. You have to method act at the beginning of your

Relax

Think about how you breathe when you are anxious and nervous. So do the reverse before a 10-second pitch. Breathe deep and in your stomach. Even three deep breaths in the stomach (and when you exhale try to imagine your stomach almost hitting your back) has been shown to totally relax the mind and body. People sense this. Again, this builds trust and relaxes you. Now, even though you haven’t said a single word, you’ve probably done the two most important things for convincing someone.

Uhhh. Yeah. Uhhh. Mmmm-hmmm. Uh-huh

I have a hard time with this. It seems natural to say, “yup” or “right” or “uhhuh” or whatever. But here are the facts (and, again, there have been studies on this): People perceive you as stupid when you do this. Just keep quiet when someone is talking. Then, when someone is done speaking, wait for two seconds before responding. They might not be done yet. And it gives you time to think of a response. If you are thinking of a response while they are talking, then you aren’t listening to them. People unconsciously know when you are not listening to them. Then they say No to you.

The 6 u’s

FINALLY, now we’re getting to the heart of the matter. THE ACTUAL NUTS AND BOLTS OF PERSUASION This is not BS. This is not a way to persuade someone to do something they don’t want to do. This is a way for you to consolidate your vision into a sentence or two and then express it in a clear manner. Think about these things when talking: 1. Why the problem you solve is URGENT. 40

Gulf Insider November 2019

Experts Reveal Life Secrets

2. Why is your solution unique. 3. Why is your solution useful to the lives of the people you plan on selling to. 4. Ultra-specific - This shows there is no fluff 5. User-friendly -Make it as easy as possible for someone to say “yes.” Like a money-back guarantee. Or a giveaway. Or testimonials from people you both know. 6. Unquestionable proof- This can be in the form of profits. Or some measurable statistic.

Desire

As much as we would like to think otherwise, people primarily act out of selfinterest. The less they know you, the more they will act of self-interest. And what are their desires? n recognition n rejuvenation n relaxation n relief n religion n remuneration n results n revenge n romance If you can help them solve these URGENT problems or desires, then they are more likely to say “yes” to you.

Objections n

No time

(That’s OK. They have elevator-length time. The key here is to stand straight and act like someone who deserves to be listened to.) n

No interest

(You solve this by accurately expressing the urgency of the problem.) n

No perceived difference

(But you have your unique difference ready to go.) n

No belief

(Offer unquestionable proof that this works.) No decision (Make their decision as user-friendly as possible.) With great power comes great responsibility. Most people don’t have the power of persuasion. They mess up on each of the points I have outlined above. It takes practice and hard work. But this is not just about persuasion. It is about connection. It is about two people, who are probably strangers, trying to understand each other and reach common ground. n

Alternative Realities By David Galland

T

here’s a unique tendency of us humans to create alternative realities. In fact, with seven billion people on this planet, it might be said that there are seven billion different realities. Of course, many of those realities are of no real consequence - for instance, if you believe that the colour blue is somehow lucky. Other alternative realities, however, have far broader acceptance and therefore, profound consequences. In the case of the sciences, the effects of alternative realities can often be quite serious. As just one of a billion possible examples, a friend of mine, having been diagnosed with prostate cancer, travelled the world far and wide in the pursuit of alternative remedies, just like Steve Jobs did following his diagnosis of liver cancer, wasting precious time and, in the end, needlessly costing him his life. It never fails to amaze me how two people can receive the exact same input and come to diametrically different interpretations. While much of this sort of thing can be harmless, the shores of planet Earth are stacked high with the dried bones of broken relationships, ruined mega-bands, shattered marriages, collapsed business partnerships and more - all due to alternative realities derived from viewing the same events through different lenses. The unscrupulous, which among others includes mass media, rentseekers and power grabbers alike, well understand the buttons on human emotions and push those buttons relentlessly in the pursuit of their self-interest. In today’s world, anyone - no matter how ill-informed - is capable, with the right amount of window dressing, of appearing knowledgeable on any topic.

And with an imaginary typhoon looming large on the horizon, the unscrupulous with their newly fooled constituency of useful idiots in tow leap into action, each with their own self-serving agenda. When it comes to separating hard realities from those that are substantially less so, you really have only your own powers of observation to fall back on. But there are some broad guidelines I would mention. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Enough said! Be sceptical of dire predictions for the future. With the more or less steady advance of human progress, why should we now expect that progress to shift into reverse? That’s not to say there aren’t going to be periods of crisis we’re in one now. But most people will muddle on through, and in no time at all, in time, things will be humming along, better than ever. Don’t believe anything a politician tells you. It’s in their interest to tell you what you want to hear, and that can be a wide margin away from reality and most likely is. Follow the money. If someone, or some company, tells you something the solution to which directly or indirectly benefits them, be cautious. That’s not to say that a company that offers products or services that solve various real problems won’t be truthful and genuinely helpful. Find trusted sources, but even then keep your sceptic’s hat close at hand. It’s your life and your money - and that means you have the most to lose by picking the wrong path forward. Saudi Arabia plans to develop the largest logistics zone The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) has announced the launch of Al Khomra Logistics Zone, the kingdom’s largest such integrated logistics area. The first phase of the project is set to cover a land area of more than 2 million sq m, with over 1 million sq m of grass flat area that will be made available to investors under a lease model. The logistics zone seeks to provide enhanced infrastructure to help the kingdom being increasingly competitive in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. Mawani’s president, Saad bin Abdulaziz Alkhalb said that Al Khomra was a “major leap” in Saudi Arabia’s logistics sector, adding that the zone is expected to open up a number of new investment and business opportunities. The Al Khomra Logistics Zone is particularly significant due to its proximity to international trade routes and ample road connections to Jeddah Islamic Port and King Abdulaziz International Airport. Al Khomra’s location on the Red Sea coast – in which 13 percent of global maritime trade passes – will make it a vital hub on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Alkhalb added. Additionally, Mawani has launched a plan to optimise the potential and capacity of Saudi Arabia’s ports by offering integrated logistics services and banded and re-export zones.

Saudi Arabia expands tourist visa system Saudi Arabia has moved to expand a recently-launched tourist visa system aimed at drawing holidaymakers to the kingdom. Following an announcement last month, citizens from 49 countries were initially eligible for online e-visas or visas on arrival, including the United States, Australia, several European nations, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, China and Kazakhstan. This has now been extended to nationals of other countries holding a valid commercial or a tourist visa issued by the US, the UK or the European Union’s Schengen visa, reported leading Arabic daily Okaz. Others looking to visit Saudi Arabia can approach Saudi missions for a tourist visa provided they attach to their applications a return ticket, a residence booking in the kingdom, financial status and address in the home country, according to the report. Saudi Arabia announced on September 27 it would start offering tourist visas, opening up the kingdom to holidaymakers as part of a push to diversify its economy away from oil. The government, reeling from low oil prices, says it hopes tourism will contribute up to 10 percent of the gross domestic product by 2030, compared to three percent currently. It says by 2030 it aims to attract up to 100 million annual visits by both domestic and foreign tourists.

n October we flew to the beautiful French Rivera to experience the new Bentley Flying Spur. Bentley is a brand that stands for sporting luxury, and with the new Flying Spur Bentley have surpassed themselves. It offers the performance of a Super Car, the comfort of a gentleman’s private club, and the appearance of a muscular work of art. Bentley wanted us to experience the new Flying Spur first as passengers, and only afterwards as drivers. Therefore, upon arrival at Nice International airport we were escorted to an awaiting Flying Spur, with chauffeur. Seeing the car for the first time is an impressive sight. Bentley have somehow managed to make the Flying Spur both retro and futuristic. This is a big, luxurious, opulent, car. It has a huge, wide and imposing front grill between large matrix LED headlamps.

The famous flying B mascot illuminates and is fully retractable at the press of a switch. So we got into the back seats, the chauffeur loaded our luggage into the boot, and we were whisked to the Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo. The journey took 45 minutes and, after a long flight, we got to experience the luxurious comfort of the car’s huge leather seats. They were far more comfortable than the airline Business Class seats we had occupied for many hours. They also offered plenty of leg room, a choice of various massage sessions, and there was even a cooler for champagne (or water) located between the back seats. The next day we got to drive the car, but before we could drive on the open roads we first had to navigate our way out of the slightly chaotic streets of Monaco. There are so many details that cater more to luxury and art than to actual driving needs. The massive 6 liter engine offers 620 hp and 664 lb ft of torque, enabling zero to 100 khp in just 3.7 seconds. This is Super Car performance. Top speed exceeds 330 kph. I very much enjoyed driving this car. It’s quite inside with little road noise, yet the sound of the powerful engine is still audible, and in a satisfying way. Driving mode options are Comfort – which certainly lives up to its title as you hardly feel the bumps in the road, Sport – for when you want to drive it like a Ferrari, and Bentley Mode – which is a combination of Comfort and Sport. There’s also a Custom Mode which enables the driver to create their own unique driving mode. 46

MG - Thinking big Gulf Insider visits the Lebanon to drive the latest SUV’s from MG - the HS and RX8.

M

G was a famous English car maker renowned for its inexpensive 2 seater sports cars such as the MG Midget and MGB GT. The company, now under Chinese ownership, stopped manufacturing sports cars like those the brand was once famous for and instead focused on producing high volumes of family friendly affordable motors. We were delighted to have the opportunity to visit the Lebanon to find out about the latest SUVs to the MG range – the HS and RX8. Each is an attractive vehicle, with big front grills proudly bearing the MG badge, and decent amounts of boot space inside. There’s lots of built-in storage spaces and cup-holders, and thoughtful additions such as a big center arm rest, central air vents, reading lights, and USB slots for passengers seated in the back.

48

Gulf Insider November 2019

Both the HS and RX8 share the same engine, a 220-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine that develops maximum torque of 360Nm mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. Driving up into the mountains south of Beirut with four adults onboard, these engine was perfectly adequate.

MG RX8

Both the HS and RX8 handled well on both highways and twisting mountain roads, and have lots of interior room, front and rear. The panoramic sunroofs made the cabins feel even roomier. The smaller HS comes in 3 options levels; Explore, Excite, and Exclusive. All offer alloy wheels, LED headlights,

Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto and electric folding door mirrors. Excite models have 18in wheels (instead of 17”), a reversing camera, rain-sensing wipers and sat-nav. Exclusive models have diamond-cut 18” alloys, leather interior, sequential indicators front and rear, electrically adjustable front seats, and a full-length sunroof. All versions of the HS come with MG Pilot, a range of electronic safety equipment that includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot detection… and more. Moving on to the RX8, this is the company’s first 7 seater model and MG claims it has the largest wheelbase and the roomiest third-row in its class. It offers a real-time 4x4 Torque on Demand system with six different driving modes:

Auto, 4L, Off-road, Snow, Sport and 2H. Features include matrix-style LED lights, 20-inch alloy wheels, and premium interior finishes including wood grain, chrome and soft-touch trim in a choice of three colour schemes. My only complaint about these SUVs is there’s a lag in power when driving in low revs. I’ve driven other current model MG cars and I’ve noticed the same lag in all of them. It’s not serious, but some people may find it annoying. But, the overall quality felt good for the price. These are decent valuefor-money SUVs and come very well equipped. The company has ambitious plans, so expect MG to sell well in the price conscious Bahrain market. Prices in Bahrain start at BD 7,349 (inc VAT) for the HS, and BD 8,925 (inc VAT) for the RX8. We were lucky with our timing - it was only when we returned to Bahrain that we discovered we’d left the Lebanon within hours of the huge public protests against government corruption and incompetence that had highways to the airport blocked with burning tires and protesters, and many flights being cancelled or delayed. The Lebanon is such a beautiful country, and the Lebanese people are terrific. We hope things are soon resolved positively. Gulf Insider November 2019
