OVERVIEW The Air Traffic Control Department (ATC) at the Qatar Aeronautical College provides training for students who wish to pursue a career in air traffic control. As a member of ICAO Trainer Plus, all courses provided by the ATC Department follow criteria set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Furthermore, the courses are regulated and approved by the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA). Upon successful completion of the selected course, students are awarded with a College Level National Diploma in Air Traffic Control. The Air Traffic Control Department utilises many facilities for training purposes, including a simulator equipped to accommodate training for Tower and Approach procedures. The 3-D Control Simulator is used as an integral part of the Aerodrome Control course that is based upon ICAO 052 requirements. The course is designed to introduce students to air traffic control procedures, ICAO and its associated regulations, navigation, meteorology, aviation law, aeronautical information services, human factors, aircrafts, and equipment and systems. Having completed the course, the student is qualified to start On Job Training in a live ATC operational environment. The classrooms are equipped with Wireless Internet Connection and many multimedia facilities. Computer laboratories equipped for practical applications of course material are also available to the students.


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS >

Applicants must have successfully completed High School education, with competitive grades in Mathematics, and English to the level of IELTS 5.5

Applicants must meet the medical requirements as specified in ICAO Annex 1

Applicants must pass an ATC aptitude test, which determines whether one has the capacity to perform as an air traffic controller

To obtain a Diploma in Air Traffic Control, the student must successfully complete at least a basic course, an aerodrome control course, an approach control course.

These courses cover all the regulations, practical techniques, and skills required by ICAO for ATC licensing. The simulator supports this part of the training where students begin to appreciate the complexity of controlling in a live environment. This allows a close-to-real-life experience for the students. The department also offers short courses in Air Traffic Management, including but not limited to: Supervisor courses, Instructional Techniques, Human Factors in ATC, Search and Rescue, CNS/ATM, RVSM. The department also offers Radio Telephony certificate of competency for HLO and CAT 3-AVOP, as well as other Airport and Ground Safety courses.

SUMMARY To be an Air Traffic Controller is to be involved in one of the most thrilling and dynamic careers. It requires a large amount of discipline and talent, as controllers operate in a highly safety critical environment, and as such, are privileged with excellent job opportunities globally, and are entitled to respect only a handful of professions claim. In the ever-expanding field of aviation, Air Traffic Controllers are truly the unsung heroes.
