To Perform
Potentials of Timber in Architecture
The Idea of this project is to capture the Life of an Artist. Intepretaed as a Live Performance, we translated 3 different gestures relating to perform into Architecture. 3 Big movable Waderobes are born. They are placed inside the Office Courtyard of Villa Panza and is held together through an upper Roof-Structure made of light industrial Steel elements & dynamic Membrane Elements.

According to Giorgio Grassi, the first thing to learn is the form, followed by observations and work. Conditions such as social, cultural, and historical characteristics are important in describing the form. Second, the synthetic characters should be examined using impressions, explanations, and translations. Another explanation he gives is that the old buildings have “regula,” which means that the form is repeated as some rhythms of that day and the perfect symmetry of the forms in daily life.
The scene in each space is different, and it is followed by different functions that architecture leads to. Even in the same space, a small detail of an architectural material can have different meanings and unique usage, changing the overall perception of the project’s understandability.
Wood, as a natural element, is a fundamental architectural material that has been used since the beginning of time. As the main construction element derived from old building techniques, it has been a solution to many problems. Traditional construction techniques aided in the development of the various project scenarios.

To meet the architectural terms in the projects, wood acts as an element to support the lightness visually and statically, openness with more natural light coming inside the complexes.
The following design project depicts the use of the same material with various touches and the creation of a variety of design solutions.
Minimal Dwelling For An Artist
The project area was at the Villa Panza in Varese, Italy. Villa is a 18th-century mansion with contemporary American art collection, surrounded by vast parkland. Villa Panza has been home to a con temporary American art collected by its owner. It has been used as a home also for Giuseppe Panza and his family before. The project aim was to change the back garden of the villa and create a space according to theme.
The main goal for the project was to create a minimal dwelling for the artist who would come to the villa and create an art at the villa while interrupting with the visitors and the people of Varese. For the final design, we chosed mobile home for the artist. Using timber and wood elements, we could accomodate artist while his stay in the villa.
Connecting three elements; steel, concrete and wood, we created a space as a stage for the artist to make his art. So that artist could be able to move between units and create a unity between them. Each unit has their own purpose of accomodation. Each unit has different forms of function. In those units, wood was the dominant material for structure and furnitures.
The Idea of this project is to capture the Life of an Artist.

We used the slope towards the Via Ponti Street to createe a height difference.

Segal Method
The second project of The Design Studio 2 was a study of the Segal Method, which was carried out in a project field in the Politecnico Campus. The study of the method and the design of a new building using this wood construction method in accordance with the original and traditional ideas.
The simplicity of the project, as well as the combination of each space, are important in the Segal Method. The project is kept simple with wooden materials, and elements are reduced to their essentials to achieve maximum economy and affordability. The Segal Method benefits from the open system building’s speed and economy while avoiding the monotony and inflexibility that can result from a closed system. The planning and construction processes are given special attention.
The method is very open because it uses readily available materials and techniques. The structure is organized in a regular grid determined by standard material sizes. The simplicity continues with adaptability and ease of maintenance. The Segal Method is a way of thinking about architecture rather than just building it. The quality is not monumental or massive, but there is a concern for comfort and unity, which corresponds to the people who live inside, and it is easily adjustable.

Winter Olympics
The project area was in the neighborhood in city of Milan. The project was to build a dormitory for the athletes who were gonna participate in the Winter Olympics which was gonna take place. For the structural element we decided to use Clt Timber Panels. Because of its natural and innovative side it was easy to build on construction process.
Clt panels can be supplied for larger dimensions. It can endure hard conditions and fire proof. We applied this structural method for the walls, facade and roof. In the meantime we used concrete foundation. Where we have stairs and fire escape; concrete was used to support the structure.
We can see that using different materials can be innovative and supportive. Using clt panels let us to dwell into the usage of pro gressive side of the timber. Except from traditional methods, new methods are also emerging in the field of timber architecture. It leads us to think different.
Building
Building
In these three projects, the same material has been used as a furniture, structural and roof material. The structural elements started from Mobile home which is the minimal dwelling. Additional to that interior furnitures were made of wood elements. We can see the unity within the structure and materials used for different purposes. The complexity of the project was not using the architectural element of walls but using functional elements such as furniture. Using timber for a mobile house can show us the potential of wood usage in different areas of architecture. Our aim was to create serenity with nature while protecting mobility of the dwelling since our aim was to accomodate an artist in his visit in the villa.
Segal method has followed with its traditional and simple structure. Quality, according to Christopher Alexander, is the harmony of form. Serenity is a respectful term in Japanese culture, and it has been applied to architecture. The light materials and simplicity of the Segal Method adhere to this tradition. The natural element is used as the main element in the method of repetition, openness, and simplicity. The fine serenity within the order of the wooden element in the building’s structure. The segal Method is a Japanese wooden building technique.
At the project of Dormitory for The Winter Olympics, we explored the innovative side of the timber. As timber has multiple potentials in architecture let alone it is a naturel element, technology enable us to open new doors towards usage of timber. With the clt timber panels, we are now able to build larger and stronger buildings. As it is also proved in Japand that timber structures can endure heat and earthquakes. Timber has many potentials in architecture. Its usage is coming from times since man has the power to create from wood. From furnitures to structures to simple gadgets...
