Elida – combining the best of tradition and innovation

Elida is a 48’ racer-cruiser, intended to create a modern classic with racing speed as well as room and comfort for family enjoyment. She is capable of performing well in IRC and ORC, with the Fastnet race in mind.

Designed by Thomas Tison, and built in Germany by Jan Brügge Bootsbau, Elida features Gurit materials provided by distributor CTM GmbH. Corecell™, Ampreg™, and Spabond™ were all incorporated into this exceptional yacht. CTM’s ability to provide the materials quickly made the project move along smoothly.

With a lifting keel, water ballast, and retractable propulsion system, Elida has been designed to be equally at home on the race course as providing relaxation for her owners. She is capable of surfing at speeds near 30 knots, making use of her high tech design and materials engineered for the best strength to weight ratio.

Elida launched in late July 2022 - she and her happy owner are ready to take on any challenge.

On track for launch dayMatuku and Wind Spirit

The Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders (LSB) team are on track this month for the launch of the stunning custom 60ft Sports-fisher Matuku, as well as the 24m Expedition Ketch Wind Spirit.

LSB operate from their purpose-built factory in Auckland, New Zealand, with Gurit having supplied technical support and a range of products, including core, carbon reinforcements and consumables for infusion and vacuum bagging, for many years.

It was decided early on to go with an all-carbon build, using a mix of resin infusion and prepreg technologies, to meet the weight target requirements of this high performance project. This allowed the selection of a pair of commercially rated Volvo D11 625 engines, with an output substantially below what would typically be found on other 60ft sports-fishers – yet producing a top speed over 30 knots and a predicted cruising speed of 26 knots.

Stay tuned to see more of Matuku on Gurit social media as we follow the launch and sea trials.

Matuku - Artnautica 60 Sports-fisher

This 60ft (18m) high speed, full-carbon sports-fisher from Dennis Harjamaa of Artnautica Yacht Design, features Gurit Corecell™ M foam for the construction of the hull, flybridge and deck, selected for its excellent slamming performance and dynamic load capacity.

In a departure from the usual method of constructing a launch like this, weight was prioritised from day one. “The boat was built like a race yacht,” explained Lloyd Stevenson. “We weighed every component before fitting.”

Also leaving the LSB shed this month and featuring a range of Gurit materials, is a 24m Expedition Ketch. Designed by Arnaud Yacht Design for short-handed sailing in remote places and high latitudes, this boat has several systems to enable independence, such as solar panels and a pair of hydro-generators. Although the interior design is quite minimalist, a good level of comfort and high level of finish has been maintained.

The hull, made of strip planked yellow cedar with an E-glass and aramid outer skin, will produce the required performance, satisfying the owners’ sail racing background.

“We are delighted to see these boats come to fruition and proud to provide materials and on-going support to Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders, continuing our already longstanding relationship,” said Gurit NZ Sales Manager, Chris Moors.

ETNZ prepares for their recordbreaking land speed attempt

After the 36th America’s Cup victory in 2021, Emirates Team New Zealand set their sights on another ‘quest for speed’, one that brings together their passions for speed, technology, design and innovation. This time the challenge would mean transferring their talents from being the fastest on the water, to the fastest on land.

Horonuku, which means ‘gliding swiftly across land’, is the land speed yacht built by the ETNZ boatbuilding team in Auckland, with carbon prepreg and dry fibre supplied by Gurit. Later this year, in South Australia, the team will attempt to beat the world wind-powered land speed record.

Weight considerations impacting construction choices

The ETNZ build team is made up of apprentices through to some of the world’s most experienced boatbuilders. They build their AC75 hulls from prepreg since a small per-sqm weight saving over a larger area, such as a boat hull, has a significant impact. In the case of the land speed yacht, the use of prepreg is reserved exclusively for components above the main body of the craft.

“We are incredibly weight conscious with this project –we need to keep the mast, the wing and the spar light to increase the righting moment and the stability needed to generate power,” explained Tim Meldrum, Mechanical Engineer, ETNZ.

The body of the land speed record craft is less mass critical: the weight is down low and does not affect righting moment too much. Therefore, the build team opted for dry fibre infusion for the thicker single skin laminates, and wet lamination in other areas.

ETNZ and Southern Spars have been longstanding partners for America’s Cup campaigns and now for the land speed record

Continued partnership with spar and wing expert

The craft requires a relatively small area of sail but the design of the 10 metre-high ridged wing and spar of the land speed craft is critical to the task of exceeding 202.9km/h and breaking the world record. In many respects, this design harks back to previous America’s Cups: the AC72 & AC50 catamarans featured hard wing sails as opposed to the soft twin skin wing sails seen on the AC75s in the 36th America’s Cup.

“Having Southern Spars focus on the production of the spar and wing that we designed has helped us hit our very tight production timelines,” explained Glenn Ashby, pilot of Horonuku. “The result is a high quality rig which will hopefully see us push well towards 250kmph later this year.”

Horonuku has now arrived at Lake Gairdner in South Australia and, once the lake dries out, the team will make its attempt at the world land speed record.

Solar-powered composite racers

The last few months have seen a string of successes for the Técnico Solar Boat team and their innovative prototypes.

July saw the 9th edition of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. The event is supported by the Yacht Club de Monaco and aims to stimulate the creativity of tomorrow’s engineers and the industry to develop propulsion methods using clean energy. Participants can compete in three classes: Energy, Solar and Open Sea Class.

The Técnico team, from the Instituto Superior Técnico, the largest school of architecture, engineering, science and technology in Portugal, had entries in both the Energy Class and the Solar Class.

After a week of hard work and excitement, the team achieved third place in the Solar Class with its São Rafael 03 prototype, and was awarded the innovation prize for the hydrogen propulsion system of the São Miguel 01 prototype.

In August, the São Rafael 03 secured first place on the podium in the Madeira Solar Race. Congratulations to the Técnico Solar Boat team from everyone at Gurit!

Maria Portijo, Design & Composites Director for the Técnico Solar Boat Team says, “Gurit supplied the team with pre-impregnated carbon fibre for the production of São Rafael 03’s new monolithic struts. Once again, the Design & Composites team loved working with Gurit prepreg! These new struts are stiffer than the previous ones, and enabled better performance of the boat when foiling during this year’s competitions!”
