DE MEY 60: high-end power catamaran coming to life

Under construction at Nic de Mey Yachts are two spacious 60ft (18.3m) power catamarans, designed as passagemakers with the range, handling and comforts expected from a cruising boat. They boast large open plan living spaces, four generously sized cabins, the equivalent toy storage volume of an 86ft monohull, and a tender garage to fit a 4m tender. There are plans to expand the aptly named ‘Spaceship’ range to include 16m and 20m versions.

Valuable benefits with prepreg or infusion solutions

de Mey is an experienced boat builder of both race boats and pleasure craft and is well versed in advanced composites and the benefits they offer.

“We only work with prepreg or infusion and the main structures of the DE MEY 60s are an infused carbon sandwich laminate,” explains de Mey. “To us, the extra cost of the materials is worth it. You make a significant weight saving, plus there are labour savings as you generally need to lay down less fibre. The lamination team appreciates the cleaner workspace and I that find this whole approach leads to high quality workmanship and lower staff turnover, which is hugely valuable.”

Structural core as critical success factor

Nic de Mey Yachts are a long-time user of Gurit Corecell™, using it on the exterior of the 60s to minimise outgassing. It is also their preferred core in their many high-speed projects where slamming loads are extremely high, such as their 21ft race boats, which feature Corecell™ 130 on the planing surfaces.

IN OUR OPINION, IF YOU HAVE A COMMON-SENSE APPROACH TO WEIGHT SAVING, THE CUSTOMER ENDS UP WITH A VERY HIGH-END PRODUCT AT A REASONABLE PRICE.
