Only when you gather all your strength and empower yourself, thy human; Only then shall you look into the fear’s eyes and watch it bid goodbye. the world shall fall upon its knees and the fortunes shall turn its wheels; Only then shall the Gods bend the fates and make them bow before your grace. Let that fire ignite your heart; Let that fire not sleep you tonight.

The tower subtly stands in the valley next to the epicenter of the city, the MAIN SQUARE. Led to by a skywalk, it is at a distance, much needed to be appreciated from the main city. Through it’s narrative, visitors can relate to the city via experiential spaces that whisper it’s memoir! The journey from the bottom of the tower to the observatory, providing a view to the entire city, is symbolic of transformation , from its genesis to its present. The tower is ever evolving, with the potential to contain the future as it becomes the present. The blank concrete walls are ageless and would forever be a landmark to the city!

Time projects everything in worlds parallel to the one it exists in. Till time travel is a hypothetical concept, the only way to build a relationship between these parallel worlds is through memories. So, for people to perceive the city differently, they need to connect it’s present image in relation to it’s past! Tibetans, while struggling to rebuild their identity in a foreign land, gave it one and yet are unknown for their boundless contribution. Torn between this paradoxical identity crisis in the present and the intimidating potential to become a ghost town, in the future, stands Mclodeganj, a puppet in the hands of time.

three.

The project is based on the concept of biomimetism. The tutor conceived the idea of creating a nature observatory in a very peaceful lagoon located at the Herstrau Lake, by taking inspiration from water-lilly. Structure was built by a team of 13 members. The design is supported by recycled plastic water containers which were fixed below the deck. A puffy chair was installed in the center. The framework was first built and then transported to the lake, where it was further worked upon and finally installed. The project gave practical and hands on experience of working with tools, machinery and various materials.

When the idea of the perfect city of Chandigarh was conceived, the master divided the city into sectors. But, sector 13 was missing from the plans. Upon deeper analysis, it was revealed that the sum of opposite sector numbers was always a multiple of 13 . In simpler words, its there but it’s not!

runner up. location: hall of nations, new delhi requirement: the theme for india international trade fair 2016 was digital india. participants were required to design a pavilion that represented iter-relation between the city and the digital realm.

Similarly, digitalisation in India is not prominent on the macro scale but it is there in the lifestyle of people of the city. Hence, the idea of using sector 13 as a metaphor for the digital Chandigarh. Behind the facade of the Highcourt ,building, lies the sector 13, which is the analogy of digital India. Sector markers marked the entrance of the sector 13 pavilion. The exhibition space is a 3D grid of fibonacci series with exhibition panels on different heights and dimensions. This would engage the user to view in 3D space rather than usual 2 dimensional field of vision.

The pavilion had multiple entrances and free circulation space. Shape of open had was cut out from the grid to mark the primary entrance. Sitting was designed near the exhibition space and a model of Chandigarh was displayed on the wall behind the sitting for people to understand the grid planning of the city.

The trophy, sponsored by UNESCO, involves physical documentation and analysis of a site on which being cited, enters the UNESCO database as a heritage site. The relevant data is finally reproduced by hand, using pen and ink as the medium. The site selected is a stepwell in Gujarat. Built by Raja Bharmal in 1526, in the memory of his queen Jivni, this kund-vav represents a further evolution in subterranean structures. The form is an ingenious adaptation of kund-vav. The steps descend on three sides only, the fourth is a multi-storeyed wall of rooms, opening into the kund.

Symbolic carvings of guardian lions are worshiped alongside water.

The eight-pointed flower represents Lord Vishnu’s Sudarshan Chakra. Entrance doorways on the facade are adorned with carvings of dancing ladies, resembling the “Apsaras” inhabiting heaven. While the rulers exploited the skyline above, innovation and evolution of making structures below the ground level to interact with the energies beneath the earth surface came into picture.

A fine sense of combining the human knowledge and aspirations, in the form, to introduce a retreat pavilion into the subterranean edifice marked distinction in the antiquity.

Concentric circles carved at various places of the edifice is symbolic of the sphere of life and circle of existence. The circles also represent the Buddhist and Jain influence.

The carved serpentine brackets represent of ‘Shesh Nag’ Lord Vishnu’s vahan. The carvings of lotus petals are symbolic of fertility and beauty. A legacy that is embedded in the very fabric of our traditions, awaits revival. It stood the tests of time endlessly because of its innate ability to adapt to the changing scenarios around it.

“Imagine tomorrow, A day, when the sun rises in the west, the world is upside down! All that’s a daily commodity today, will turn into a priceless luxury tomorrow. But the only link that would be a key to an assured future will be our knowledge system.”
