WORKS OF GURSEHEJ SINGH OBEROI
The visual arts have never been something I can describe, or something I can explain-even to myself. There’s that element of mysterious romance that is always left between the end of my brush and the surface of the canvas. That ‘romance’ is what holds all the meaning of art for me. And maybe that’s why I go back to the Art School every day to make a mess of my clothes and lay a pot of emotions on the canvas. This file includes some of my recent works in various media. Though my art’s changed significantly over the course of my life, every phase of the journey has left bits and pieces of evidence and emotion in the sieve. And it’s all here. Though the pencil, pastels and clay remain the best of my buddies, I’ve befriended various other media that my school has to offer and some that it doesn’t.
My recent photography remains a little uncanny to the people around me, especially since I see beauty in things that most others feel are ordinary-and some sure are. Over the passage of time, I’ve tried not to let society affect my art (and I mean society and not critics). Every time I’ve experimented with being influenced by others, I’ve seen an artwork that just doesn’t represent me nor the emotions I try to portray. My audiences have reciprocated the same feelings, and I know for sure that art is somewhere inside. The real challenge is to bring it out. I hope you enjoy my pieces of art. I’d be obliged if I can receive healthy criticism from you, as that would be the best perspective from which to see my defects. Thank you.
