To organize an area of land to fit a residential program for its development which is efficient, expresses the character of the site & provides attractive spaces to use. O B J E C T I V E S

To analyze various aspects of site planning and stages in the site planning process for a residential area using pre-designed residential flats as a basic unit. To study the location, linkages, physiographical features, and Infrastructure facilities for basic understanding of site for further development which would how be to handle the the smallest 2 representative of a larger unit – The City 3 To envisage the understandings bye laws, FAR, ground coverage, of basic regulations such as building development control regulations etc To deliver a planning proposal analyzing how natural factors (landscape), socio-economic forces (planning) & technological functions (architecture & engineering) interact in the design process deriving the form, space, and scale to the site .

► De novo Urban Fringe of Kolkata ► Exclusive Location ► Developing region with a blend of Residential, commercial cum retails complexes, corporate parks and institutional entities. ► Proximity to public transport facilities ► Potential Residential Cluster zone NEW TOWN KOLKATA: This is fastgrowing planned satellite city of Kolkata encompassing an area of 93.9 Sq.kms , New town is the new definition of Urban life in Kolkata. This new land of possibility provides an adobe to over 15 lakh people(1612/sq.km). The wide range of modern-day infrastructure facilities like schools, health care centres, commercial plazas, IT Hubs and eco-parks make New town a preferred address for the people.

KOLKATA SEISMIC HAZARD MAP

Land form: located on the western fringe of composite HooghlyPadma-Meghna Delta region.

Seismic zone:

The site lies over the Bengal Basin and lies at the boundary of the seismic zones III and IV of the seismic zonation map of India.

Hydrology

Surface Water: The selected site is 10.2 kms far from Hooghly river and there are no rivers or streams in the immediate vicinity of the site. Eco park lake 3 kms far is the nearest surface water area. Ground water: post monsoon depth 9 metres bgl to pre-monsoon 15 metres bgl required to extract ground water. Major ground water issues: KMC has reported sporadic occurrence of Arsenic beyond permissible limit (0.05mg/l) in ground water in a few places. Ground water tapped by open wells in the marshy/ swampy lands is hydraulically connected to the surface water bodies and is biogenically polluted.

Clay / sand

Soils Characteristics

SLITY CLAY WITH

DECOMPOSED WOOD

SLITY CLAY

SLITY SAND WITH TRACES OF MICA CLAY

The area is blanketed by an Younger alluvial soils deposited by the Hooghly and its tributaries. These alluvial sediments are of quaternary age. The average infiltration is about 1.5 cm/hour, which is very low

Geotechnical Characteristics of Soil:

The soils are slightly alkaline with average pH 7.21, average concentrations of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium are 0.18%, 0.74%, 0.36% and 5.12% respectively. The levels of phosphorous, nitrogen and organic matter are low to medium.. they are

immature and have slightly weak profiles for bearing capacity and stability for shallow foundations. So Pile foundations are needed as soil is porous by its loamy (equal parts of sand and clay) nature.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

Radiation rose diagram

Sun Path Diagram refers to the apparent significant seasonaland-hourly positional changes of the Sun through out the year. As per this diagram, orientation of buildings of selected site states North-west to south east orientation of buildings.

Building Positioning:

Perfect positions and angles for the most economic and sustainable energy use - These diagrams investigate the perfect positions and angles for the most economic and sustainable energy use

Building Orientation

FLORA & FAUNA

There are only 8 canopies within the site. As per Indian Forest Act, 1927, 5 samplings for each cutdown has to be replanted in the site. The selected site precincts consists of low level agricultural and barren land. Only one crop of paddy with kharif used to be cultivate with poor production. Regarding Fauna, only common domestic animals are found nearby. The selected site doesn’t habitat any endangered species of flora & Fauna. No wild life sanctuaries are located within 25 kms. Chintomani Kar Bird Wildlife sanctuary is 28 kms from the site

NOISE LEVEL DIAGRAM Design Considerations based on Climatic conditions

Staggered placement of the building blocks can help in proper and efficient movement of winds and can also help in Sunlight Distribution

Use Light colored and locally available Building materials to cool roofs to minimize conducted heat gain Design Consideration based on Topography & Hydrology:

WINTER SUMMER Hot winds can be blocked by planting Deciduous trees which have high foliage in summers and shed in winters can be used

Massive openings and Open courtyards can reduce Humidity levels, Windows in eastern & western side can promote natural heating and lighting of the building

Site has 1.6 metres slope variation and Aspect map can be utilized for laying of Water Supply, sewerage & Storm water utilities. Due to arsenic content & site proximity to STP(220m), ground water consumption can be avoided. Design Considerations derived from Geological and Soil characteristics:

1.Create a Flexible Foundation 2. Counteract Forces with Damping using pendulum power or Vibration control devices - Tuned Dampers attached to beams . 3. Shield Buildings from Vibrations - Concrete and plastic rings are placed underneath to channel shockwaves around the building 4.Reinfroce the Building's Structure 5.Use Earth Quake Resistant Materials
