T
he change of lifestyle, rapid urbanisation, food habits and other factors has made the people more prone to cancer but people, in general have become more aware of these in the last couple of years. By the year 2026, an estimated number of 26973 cases related to cancer and 80,919 prevalent number of cancer cases are estimated to be among the state population. But research has proved that cancer can be prevented or cured if detected and treated early. NGOs, members of the civil society and the government are trying hard to create awareness about the disease.

chewing tobacco being the major culprits. Besides, with respect to the number of cancer incidents, Kamrup (M) is positioned second in the country. According to the data available with the B Borooah Cancer Institute, Guwahati, every year about eight to nine thousand cancer patients are admitted and during the year 2009-11, a total number of 4416 (Male - 2508 and female 1908) cancer cases were found in Kamrup urban district. “Cancer is a multifactor disease. Apart from the environmental factors, change of lifestyles towards westernised ways, sedentary work habit, consumption of junk and fast foods, habit of tobacco consumption and migratory reasons are considered to be the major reasons of cancer among the people of Assam. Oesophageal cancer is common among women
nowadays due to changes in lifestyle and high consumption of tobacco and betelnut,” Dr Jagannath Dev Sharma, head of the pathology department of B. Borooah Cancer Institute, Guwahati told G Plus. Sharma also expressed his concern over the increasing cases of cancer in the region, but expressed his hope in dealing with them with proper and timely diagnosis. “There is no sign of reduction in cancer cases in future. But, with the increasing availability of treatment and different facilities, the number of such patients can be reduced. Moreover, through early detection and the increase of awareness through various campaigns on cancer, the disease can be prevented. Age is a risk factor in the occurrence of cancer and preventable cancer occurs generally between the age group of 35 to 65,” Sharma said.

According to the Population based cancer registry (PBCR), Guwahati, 2009-11, a total number of 19,58,077 males and 17,41,716 females living in Kamrup urban area were at risk of the disease. Terming cancer as a lifestyle disease, Dr Monalisa Goswami Sarma, a consultant neurologist as well as member of Deepsikha (Cancer care foundation) foundation, a health NGO, stressed on banning of any form of tobacco in order to control cancer. “Prevention of tobacco consumption is a must for prevention of cancer in the region. Today’s children smoke their first cigarette in class 5 or 6, which is much more addictive than alcohol and the addiction starts right from the first puff. Therefore, the guardians should come forward and talk to them about the bad effects of tobacco consumption with scientific ways instead of shying away from sensitising their children from it,” Monalisa Goswami Sarma told G Plus. As a lifetime member of the Deepsikha foundation, which is contributing towards creating awareness on cancer, Monalisa further spoke about the change of attitude towards the disease over the time. “We have witnessed a change of attitude towards cancer among the people, which has become possible because of the increased awareness about the disease, undertaken by the members of NGOs, societies and the government. Instead of panicking at the detection of cancer, people now hope to live with it and sometimes even ask about the available options,” she said. She further mentioned that medical science is trying to convert cancer to a chronic illness rather

than a killer disease and it has gained success in its effort. Now, more number of patients with cancer are surviving and living on for years. Deepsikha foundation has four ‘Arogya bhawans’ in Mumbai and these are lending help to the cancer patients of the state who go to Mumbai for treatment at the cheapest possible rates.

At first, they became numb and dumbstruck, panicking at the sight of other patients when they went to the hospital for treatment. But, with good fortune and timely detection and treatment, both of them are now leading a happy and normal life with their loved ones. “In the year 2001, when I was in the 9th standard, I had my encounter with cancer. The kind of cancer I was detected with was called ‘Sarcoma Ewing’ and the lower part of my left knee was affected by it. After detection, I hurriedly went to Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai and underwent treatment for the next three years and today, nearly after a decade I am leading a very happy and normal life with routine check-ups. I have even completed my graduation and now pursuing my post graduation in Political science,” Plabita Sharma, a proud mother of a three month old child told G Plus. While dealing with cancer, Plabita, who got married last year, fondly remembers the support and strength shown by her father. “I lost my mother when I was

Unlike Plabita, Gaurav’s cancer was detected in the year 2007 when he was 21. Even, the doctors at the B Borooah Cancer Institute had suggested that his affected leg be removed with no other means to prevent it. “After the suggestions given by

the doctors of B Borooah cancer institute, I decided to move to Tata hospital in Mumbai and there I underwent treatment for a year. I had to go through a major operation. Since, I do not belong to a very rich family, I was concerned about the bearings of the operation. But, with the help of the Deepsikha foundation, I could continue my treatment and now the doctors have minimised the check-up time to once a year,” Gaurav, who hails from Barpeta district told G Plus. He can now walk on his own, but due to some weak nerves, sometimes he needs the help of a stick while walking. “I just want to say that cancer can be survived and anybody de-
Total 25.29 39.22 31.92 3.55 tected with it should not panic. With proper treatment, there are always chances of survival,” Gaurav, who was surrounded by his father and a younger brother and sister, said. Usually, cancer risk is not genetic with only 5% of the cases being so. Apparently it occurs due to exposure to several environmental toxins. While certain risks are unchangeable, some lifestyle factors, if modified may help prevent the occurrence of cancer. A menace that it is, nothing is more apt for this disease than the age old saying: prevention is better than cure. So let’s stop cancer before it starts.

COMMODITY PRICE RISE
G
uwahati is witnessing an aggressive rise in the prices of some essential food commodities. The situation seems so critical that many Guwahatians have stopped buying these items. While the whole scenario looks bleak, the administration doesn’t look to be in a mood to intervene. Moreover, the huge difference between the price of commodities at the source and in the markets has been hug and with little monitoring, the food and civil supply department too cannot be expected to do much to control the situation. It has also been claimed that the syndicates have started dominating the markets and with no immediate action, the condition is sure to degrade further.
Jona Choudhury, Housewife
The recent price rise that we are witnessing is not only affecting one stratum of people. It has become such a serious issue, that sometimes it seems impossible. Earlier we used to buy four kilos of onions but now we have reduced our consumption to half. To say, it is our responsibility as members of the society that we maintain unity among ourselves and if for one month, we do not purchase the items, the seller would be forced to bring out the hoarded food commodities for sale. The situation sometimes looks so uncertain, that we really get scared when we think about the state and its future.
Priyangshu Choudhury, Government Employee
The department of food and civil supplies must take up the necessary responsibility to tackle the situation. They must make an effort to conduct the required investigation and understand the reasons behind such an unprecedented growth of price. It is also necessary to find out the source that is leading to such price rise. Is it happening here in the state or the price is being fixed somewhere outside it? Today, the syndicate, which has come into existence is also thought to be regulating the price of the commodities. If the shops set up by KMSS (Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti) can sell onions at Rupees 55 per kilogram then why can’t the government?
Trailokya Sharma, Businessman
The recent price rise have created immense problems for everybody as it is constantly increasing. The government must take initiatives to contain the situation, which has placed serious burden on the common man’s shoulder. Now, many people are unsure whether the prices have gone up locally or nationally. In such circumstances, the people must be informed by the authority regarding the matter. Moreover, the rumours that are coming up more often must be checked seriously, as these are started by some unscrupulous people with a motive to gain profit. But the common people too should be aware of such nuisance and do not panic with confusion.
Behind the Curtain and Concrete Walls
“Dada, aajir din tu dar-daam nokoribo” (Brother, please do not bargain today), was the sentence that drew my attention. The voice was very soft and low but yet it could be considered harsh and high and contained a mixture of joy, pain and agony. As I turned to look, I stood shocked. It was Diwali evening and the streets and houses were all lit up. Delicious aromas emanated from the Sweets and Confectionary shops, sounds of bursting crackers broke the atmosphere and people were busy buying sweets, bargaining and haggling. There stood Biju (name changed), a 10-year-old boy, in a confectionary shop in the Beltola Market selling sweets on a Diwali evening, while other children of his same age were busy celebrating. Moina (name changed), 11, employed as a housemaid, complains about sleeping on an empty stomach as all the family members had gone out to celebrate. The employer of Jiten (name changed), aged 9 years, argues that they are instead helping the child by providing him employment while the child complains of being physically abused. The situation of Raju, Riyaz, Puja, Champa, Tusumoni is no different from that of Jiten. These are only a few among uncountable cases in and around Guwahati. When a child becomes a wage-earner, to support himself/ herself or the family and it directly or indirectly interferes with the growth and development of the child, it is child labour. Being largely invisible and silent, child labours face a higher degree of exploitation and abuse in the homes of employers. These children cannot seek help and many live in conditions of absolute bondage. The state of the child is still the same even after 21 years of ratification of the UN Convention on Rights of the Child (1992) by our nation. As per the Census of India 2001, Assam has 3,51,416 child labourers. There are several laws of the land to protect the child from being exposed to the risk and vulnerability of child labour and to ensure them their rights. The most important is the role of the citizen and we, as the concerned members of the community and society, should feel responsible to become proactive to fight this evil. There are instances, when the proactiveness of concerned citizens has helped children get free of this invisible bondage. Guwahati has set a good example by coming forward to the rescue of such children and lending a caring hand. On occasion of the World Child Rights Day 2012, many societies and apartments were appreciated by a leading NGO of Guwahati for being child labour free. On many occasions, a few spirited citizens came forward and reported such matters to the police and the childline (1098). Such efforts, though less in magnitude as compared to the number of child labours existing in Guwahati, has resulted in forming a positive and child friendly attitude in the city. This is an example that humanity has not yet died. Hundreds of children in Guwahati are now able to attend school and enjoy childhood because of such efforts. It is in this context that I urge my friends to come forward to create a protective net in Guwahati for the children. The nation bestows on us to be their eyes and ears to see and eradicate the evil that is occurring as I can hear the scream of many a child behind the curtains and the concrete walls.
Manab Jyoti Kalita, Student
Price rise has landed the common masses in serious trouble. The food and civil supply minister must come up with strong steps that would reduce the problem immediately. The common people are not being able to cope up with the situation and it is only the government, that can act as their saviour. But just a little intervention would not bring the desirable result and so, they must work more efficiently. They should also keep track of the food resources available in the state and must keep themselves aware of any type of shortages that might occur. It is also the duty of the common people to keep themselves aware.

O
ur journey with ward watch, this time took us to the Santipur area, which is one of the oldest localities of the city, still struggling with some of the basic issues. The area is near Kumarpara, famous for its Durga Puja celebration and has been incorporated into ward number 5 during the last GMC election. G Plus talked with a few of the residents of the locality to know more. AREA COVERED: Santi Path (Santipur Hillside East), Aditya Sharma Path and Santipur Main Road (from Pragjyotish College to the point of Aditya Sharma Path)
Dwijen Thakuria, Businessman The developmental work is yet to gather the required speed in this part of the city, as most of the repairs to be undertaken by GMC have not started yet. The main problem that exists here is the pathetic condition of the drain which is gradually narrowing down due to severe blockage as a result of garbage disposal. It would be wrong to say that the GMC personnel are not working because we often see them cleaning the waste bins but the residents have to be more responsible by not throwing the garbage outside these bins and in the drains. Roadside parking is another problem here that needs to be solved immediately. Moreover, many road repairing projects and constructions are given to contractors on basis of mutual understanding and later the engineers on behalf of the authority, do not come to scrutinise the work. Thakuria’s Suggestion: It would be useless repairing the roads without constructing the drains. So, the drains must be renovated immediately.
Sharmila Devi, Advocate There is no water connection facility here. Moreover, the roads, which were excavated for the Guwahati water supply project have not been renovated and are in the same condition. We do have the street lamps but most of them are not working. Taking advantage of the darkness, a few groups of youth consume alcohol in those dark areas. To tackle such a situation, police patrolling should also be made more regular here otherwise it will keep on corrupting the environment. Devi’s Suggestion: Necessary action must be taken to provide the water supply connection, which is getting delayed every time.

Kishore Verma, Businessman There has not been a single change which has happened in the past four months. The responsibility of GMC providing the basic amenities has become a myth as we the common people are still miles away from the benefits that we are entitled to. For instance, the garbage collection system is at its worst. The garbage collectors come for the garbage but only after an interval of two or three days. What are we supposed to do in the meantime and what alternative do we have other than disposing them into the waste bin, which is already full. Moreover, the garbage collectors dispose the waste onto the main road. So, what is the use of taking up such an operation? The overflowing waste bin near the Pragjyotish College is also hampering the beauty of the prestigious institute. Verma’s Suggestion: A plan of action must be made immediately to start the projects which were promised during the initial days of election.
Madhumita Choudhury, Housewife The locality today is very different from what it used to be a decade back. A lot of new families have come and settled here and this has led to more garbage disposal in the lane. Today, the garbage collection system is so unplanned that people here are having hard time to dispose their waste. Also, the collectors do not go towards the end of the lane to collect the garbage. This creates a lot of harassment for the people. The hillside area of Santipur should always have the basic street lights otherwise the area becomes very dark during the evenings resulting in the rise of criminal activities. Choudhury’s Suggestion: I think in most of the wards people are having difficulty in disposing their garbage because of the absence of a well coordinated garbage collection system. So, GMC must come up with effective plans to solve the problem of the failing system.
Dipannita Kalita,
Area Sabha Member, Ward No. 5 (c)
It is true that people are having difficulties in disposing their garbage. It is because RAMKY, which has been appointed for the job has not been performing. The area sabha members of our ward have had a discussion with the councilor regarding the matter and we are planning to come up with an alternative option. But again, the people too have to be responsible by not throwing their garbage in drains. We have also informed the matter to the GMC office of the Bhootnath Division. Moreover, apart from cleaning up the drains weekly, we also carried out a cleaning drive during Durga Puja and EId. Most of the repairing and replacement work of streetlights are complete in the areas of Durgasarabar and in the Masjid Lane and the other areas are under process.

The Gauhati Artists’ Guild Has Been An Important Part Of The City’s Art Scene GARGEE BARUAH
F
rom an artist’s perception, everything in and around us is a divine paradigm, and therefore, art. Art is not just the work of some artist on the canvas but it is the expression of the soul of his imagination coloured with the intricacies of life that the observation of the artist captures. Everyone has an artist within them. Artists are those who recognise that and develop it to their fullest potential. Art and artists therefore, represent the connection between the Divine and its creation. The city boasts of its many artistic talents and the Artists’ Guild serves as a great platform for artists across the region. G Plus tries to catch a glimpse of this oldest association of artists. The Guwahati Artists’ Guild (GAG) was initiated in the year 1976. From a humble beginning to becoming a leading premier art organization, the Artists’ Guild has come a long way. It currently has 65 members, 7 life members and a whole set of talented young artists and students. The GAG has been a platform to the fresh talents and artists of Assam as well as the Northeast. It strives to provide innumerable opportunities to the students and the students have taken up art with great enthusiasm to create a niche for themselves.
ART & ARTISTS A short glimpse at the history of GAG
The Guwahati Artists’ Guild was established on 11th July, 1976. There wasn’t an active foundation for the artists to come up together as a unit before the Artists’ Guild was set up. There were many talents in the region but there wasn’t a proper platform to promote or showcase the talent in front of a wider audience. With the establishment of the Artists’ Guild, an environment began to take shape. “The Artists’ Guild came into being under the influence of the eminent artist Benu Mishra. Benu Mishra himself was a pass-out of Shantiniketan. Asudev, Rajen Hazarika, Sashi Bordoloi, Biren Singha are some of the names that have been an integral part of the Guild among others. Poets, Sculptors, Painters and artists from various fields have PHOTOS: PRATIK DHAR
contributed to the Guild in their own way. The Guild was encouraged by veterans like Nabakanta Barua, Hiru da, Jugal da etc. The initial days were a struggle as the Guild was started with seven students initially at a rented house in Silpukhuri, Guwahati. The house belonged to Biren Dutta”, says veteran artist Jyanendra Barkakati. There wasn’t much exposure those days as there is today. However, many developments were taking place one after the other and with the advent of technology, the Guild started being recognised. It became a platform for the talented artists of the entire Northeast. On August 6th, 1976 the State Art Gallery was founded. So, it was the first art gallery in Northeast and along with the Guild, exposure became handy than it was previously. Also, the Jorhat Fine Arts Society joined the league. With the course of time and its tide, Assam today has gained much ground in the art scenario of India. “Today, Assam is not a separate entity from India in the art scenario because Assam has made a place for itself in the national and international platform with the advent of technology”, says veteran artist and ex-President of GAG, Mr. Jyanendra Barkakati. On being asked about the recent developments that Artist Guild has seen, Mr. Aminul Haque says that the infrastructure is the new development and added to that, it is situated in a prime location. Haque, on being asked to express his views on the difference (if any) in the art scenario then and now says that art was emotional and devotional earlier. Much emphasis was put on teaching students how to create. Now, those students have come up to achieve laurels and they are members of the guild. He adds that there was much enthusiasm towards the guild earlier. He says
that artists are individuals first and therefore, an artist will definitely try to promote himself first and then, the guild. Also, there is a lot of exposure today once you step out of the region and make your work known in other places like Delhi, Kolkata or Mumbai. There are even prospects now of going abroad and gaining exposure.
says Mr.Aminul Haque. On styles of painting and its audience, Mr. Aminul Haque says that there are more customers for classical art/paintings than there are for modern/post-modern art whereas; the modern/post-modern art paintings are more expensive than the classical ones.
Art and commercialisation of art
With the grip of Modernism and Post- modernism spreading its influence all over the world, the art and literary scenario began to take a new turn when the conventions in the fields started being questioned and experimentation in the form of Surrealism, Progressivism, and Dadaism prevailed. While the layman might take some time to understand the different strands of art, an art lover continues to be overwhelmed at its individuality. Art is an integral part of the world at large and society in particular because, what the eyes fail to notice and understand, the heart of the artist captures in the eyes of the imagination. Art is in that sense a mirror of the society. In the modern world, art has survived many difficulties and prejudices. The presence of a foundation like Guwahati Artists’ Guild has done greater good in communicating the necessity of art and providing a platform for art and artists to bond and promote the region’s art to a wider audience.
With globalization, capitalism, technology and science, the world has become a market. Art, from being an aesthetic presence and creative excellence has now become a commodity. With this commercialisation of art, maybe the emotion attached to art has become nullified. However, looking at the brighter side of things, this process has helped artists pursue art as a full-time career. Gone are the days when artists had to make a living through quicks and fixes and struggle for a living. Nowadays, there are ample opportunities for an artist to showcase his/her talents to a wider audience and earn much appreciation and money. “This has impacted art and artists to a great deal but, this should not take away the emotional content of art as it is the crux of art. There is a world market today and individual effort is being recognised. The creative aspect should not be lost in the process of commercialisation of art”,

HEADHUNTER IN THE CITY MRINMOYEE HAZARIKA
I
f you have any unwarranted notions about tattooing, a visit to Headhunter’s ink situated at Bora service will surely change your perception. After meeting Mo Naga, the owner of the studio, you would do well to consider tattooing as an integral and aesthetic form of art. Mo is one the leading names in the tattoo industry of the country and also owns Mo Tattoos in New Delhi. Talking exclusively to G Plus, Mo speaks about his research on different tattoo art prevalent among the various tribes of the Northeastern region and his future plans.
THE BEGINNING
I graduated in fashion designing from NIFT, Hyderabad in 2009. In the year 2008, Lee Jeans (V.F Corporation), invited me to become their tattoo artist and I eventually became the local brand ambassador for their iconic store in the NCR area. I have been doing tattoos for them since my college days and in the later part of 2008, I established my first tattoo studio, Mo Tattoos, in New Delhi. But my main plan was to come back here and explore the Naga culture and identity. I handed over the studio in Delhi to someone else. Last year, I came back to the Northeast and opened a tattoo studio cum school Headhunter’s ink in Guwahati. Here, we are a team of four designers and we want to educate not only about the art of tattooing, but also its significance
Inspirational tattoo artist Mo Naga recently launched the logo of Headhunter’s Ink, his exclusive tattoo studio in the city.
of it. So far, I have trained 3 students and two of them are from outside this region. It is a very long process and you can’t learn the art within a week or two.
THE RESEARCH
Out of my 8 years as a tattoo artiste, I have been researching on Naga tattoo art and culture for the last 4 years. My research is not confined to the Naga community only, but since I am a Naga, it is easier for me to choose our tattoo culture as a starting point. I started my research trip into the interiors of Nagaland from around April-May and met people from various tribes. It is not just about the face tattoos and headhunting, which mainly pertains to the Konyak tribe and apart from them, only one other tribe practices of tattooing. Moreover, with the onset of Christianity and the ban on headhunting, the tattoos of the headhunters lost their significance. I want to revive this art and restore it to its old glory through revival programmes. Moreover, the tattoos drawn on the Naga women were more
elaborate, but the Naga people themselves do not know about it, which is very sad. Every tattoo has its own significance and these tattoos have been passed on through generations. You can identify various phases of a Naga woman’s life through the tattoos on her body. Maybe, at the end of my research, I will publish my research in a book form. I have also seen shawls and other crafts with the arts of various communities including the Naga imprinted or designed onto them. But these do not carry the complete and original meaning. There is misinterpretation of designs and lack of proper information.
MISINTERPReTaTION?
What has become a concern is that the Nagas or any other tribal communities of the North east are not researching. Whenever a foreigner visiting Nagaland suddenly sees these tattoos, he investigates through the immediate sources available and starts writing about it. They interpret it in their own way because of which the basic identity and the lifestyle of Naga people are getting distorted. Sometimes, the distortion also
happens due to the community themselves, which was the case with the Apatanis. There is misconception regarding the history of the tattoos on the Apatani women and they wear it without knowing the true meaning.
TATTOED CAREER
Many students from Guwahati come to my school and enquire about tattoo art. They are very eager to learn, but their parents do not support them. Therefore, the youngsters save money on their own and come to learn. But I believe that there is a big gap needs to be filled. In Kohima, there are many students, who are not allowed into school, because they have a tattoo. The tattoos are considered evil and the Christian schools discard the students who have tattoos. Even, the army and the society at large, do not want to include a tattooed person. It is very sad that the whole world is now recreating tattoos and the people who have a rich tradition of tattooing are discarding it. Instead of taking away their children from drawing tattoos at the very first place, the parents should teach them the proper time and age of drawing tattoos on their skin. The parents are wrong, the schools are wrong, the society is wrong but the kid is not wrong. I want the parents to say their kids that, “You are too young to get a tattoo. If you get a tattoo now, your skin will expand and look ugly later. So, you will have to wait till you are fully grown up.” There is a need to educate the elders about the tattoo culture as well.
WHAT GUWAHATI WANTS In Guwahati, the popular tattoos are dragons, the names of the lovers and the tribal tattoos, which have nothing to do with tribal folks of the region or the country. People also get the western patterns from internet and draw it on their bodies, which has nothing to do with their identity.
future
I do not have to compete with others, because the stage is already ready for me. We have a rich history and heritage of tattoo art. It is very strongly imbibed into our culture. I need to research properly and revive those art forms. I will also try to contemporaries those designs and recreate them from the beliefs, folktales, lifestyle and the surroundings of the community with the help of the government and the civil society.

Sony completes 20 years in NE
Two Decades Of Make Believe KOUSHIK HAZARIKA
I
t feels good when something makes a mark with perfection in the hearts and minds of its targeted people. Sony has successfully completed 20 years in the northeast region and in the process, has created a brand name, which makes people proud to own a Sony. It has set a benchmark in the market, which is tough for other competitors to achieve and therefore, Sony is considered as a premier brand.
Sony India
One of the most recognised brand names in the world today, Sony Corporation, Japan, established its India operations in November 1994, focusing on the sales and marketing of Sony products in the country. In a span of 16 years, Sony India has exemplified the quest for excellence in the world of digital lifestyle, becoming the country’s foremost consumer electronics brand. With relentless commitment to quality, consistent dedication to customer satisfaction and unparalleled standards of service, Sony India is recognized as a
benchmark for new age technology, superior quality, digital concepts and personalized service that has ensured loyal customers and nationwide acclaim in the industry.

According to Pritam Sen, manager, Sony Center, G.S. Road, when Sony India did not exist, the products of Sony were marketed in India through Olympia India. Sen, who started working with Sony 13 years back, said, “In Northeast too, before the origin of Sony India, the company’s products used to be marketed by Olympia India. The first distributor in Northeast region was Rajiv Jain and the name of his firm was Eastern Vyapar limited. Congratulating Eastern Vyapar Limited on its 20th Anniversary, Mr. Kenichiro Hibi, Managing Director, Sony India said, “Eastern Vyapar Limited was our first distributor in Guwahati and ever since, has been the face of Sony in the region. The distributor has been among our valued partners and we are happy to be associated with the company. Though the industry is constantly changing, we are confident that Eastern Vyapar Limited will continue to hold true to the foundation that helped set the tone for the Sony brand in North East India.” Sony India started 15 years back approximately and they opened the Guwahati office 10 years ago at N.H. Tower opposite Bora Service.”
Sony has 30% market share in TV sales in the region
“Sony is one of the leading brands in the Northeast and the
In the year 1996, Sony India was founded in Delhi and came up with the famous Trinitron television. That was the year when Sony actually came to India and entered a market which was ruled by Onida, Philips and BPL. This was basically the start of the MNC business in India. Since that time, till today Sony has been considered as the most loved brand among the consumers. It’s an aspirational brand. Everybody aspires to buy a Sony and it doesn’t matter whether they are able to do it, but everybody loves to buy a Sony. In fact, you would come across families where even the grandfathers have heard about the brand and might have had a Sony radio or a recorder. Worldwide, Sony is a company, which is loved for its products. I, as an associate of Sony got the opportunity to start the only exclusive Sony store in Guwahati in the month of July 2000 and that was the time when the G.S. Road revolution had started. It has been 13 years now and it has been a very happy and enriching journey for me as a young businessman. It’s been now 20 years with the brand. It has really progressed well and is available in every nook and corner of Northeast. People of northeast love the brand and they really have Sony as the top brand in their minds when they go to the market. This Diwali and Durga Puja season, it has done fabulous business. The Sony Xperia series is also doing well. Though Sony had a tough time in between when the CRTs and LCDs were not really selling well, but now it has come back again strongly with the mobile phones as well as the play stations. Recently we heard that Play Station 4 was launched and in one single day 1 million pieces were sold which is quite an achievement.

brand value is very high. It is considered as a premier brand with better quality products. It is also backed by good after-sales service”, said Bharali Brothers limited director, Aloy Bharali. He explained that his retail outlet is one of the oldest in Guwahati established in 1934 and in last 20 years, Sony has kept up the consistency in its quality by producing premier products. When Sony came to the Northeast, it had competitors like BPL, Videocon, Onida and Panasonic, and if we look at today, Sony is the best company, added Bharali. He said, “Over time, it has provided steady profit to its trade partners.” Vimal Bharali of Tech Shop, Rajgarh (Sony service station), feels that Sony is the premier brand in the region. It is the pioneer in converting normal TVs into LCD and LEDs.
“While buying electronic products, I trust only one company and that is Sony”, said a proud owner of a Sony Xperia Z, Amit Bhattacharjee. He also has a Sony Plasma TV at his home and many other products of the same brand. He expressed that Sony is a quality product and it has never let him down. “Yes, sometimes I hear my friends saying that the service they got from some models like Xperia
Neo etc was not good but after all, it is electronics and sometimes there might be some problem if you do not handle the product with care. I have never faced a problem with any of its product and I’m content with its services.” Another proud owner of Sony owner, Chiryojyoti Chakravorty said, “It is expensive to buy a Sony product, but once you buy it, you are satisfied with its performance and service. When I see something new from Sony, I save money for a few months and then purchase the product. It hurts my pocket, but my soul is happy.” The craze for Sony exists and the 20 year journey by company was effective in building a brand in the NE and providing customer satisfaction.

TEA PARK
A
ssam has fast tracked the process of setting up of Northeast India’s first Tea Park. The park will come up in Chaygaon in the outskirts of Guwahati. To promote tea tourism the state government has also decided to set up a tea museum of international standards in the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC). The pre-feasibility report of the tea park has already been prepared. Assam Industry minister, Pradyut Bordoloi said that the government would come up with an integrated tea park in Guwahati. He added, “Already a project management consultant is engaged for the project and 500 bighas of land has been allotted for the park which will have integrated retailing, blending, packaging and township. The park is expected to come up in the next three years time.” Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi during his meeting with the Deputy Chairman of the Planning commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia apprised that although tea is the biggest industry in Assam, there is not a single integrated tea park in the state, which can cater to needs of the tea industry in a holistic manner. Tea export from the state will increase substantially with the operation of the park. Based on the Techno economic feasibility report, Assam Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC) has recasted the project cost from Rs 39.67 Cr to Rs 23.40 Cr. The fund is expected to be generated from the leased out space and assistance to the state for developing export infrastructure and allied activities

WOMAN BANK
A
unit of the all-women Bharatiya Mahila Bank has started its functions in the city recently. Guwahati is among the seven cities across India to host the first branches of the all-women Bharatiya Mahila Bank. “Seven branches, one each at Kolkata, Guwahati, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Lucknow and Mumbai have been opened simultaneously. It is the first commercial bank established exclusively for women,” an official statement said. The Bharatiya Mahila Bank will offer special products designed for women customers. BMB, a pioneering initiative to empower women, was launched with a corpus of Rs 1,000 Cr to function as a universal bank.
Assam Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC) has recasted the project cost from Rs 39.67 Cr to Rs 23.40 Cr. (ASIDE). Presently, Guwahati has around 14 lakh square feet warehousing facilities scattered in different locations, which according to industry is not adequate. There is hardly any packaging and blending activity presently. Assam produces around 550 million kgs (mkgs) of made tea. This park will also assist other Northeastern states. Tea plantation is expanding fast in non-traditional areas and the park is expected to assist the tea growers from nontraditional areas. While Assam and Tripura are traditional tea growing, states like Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram and Sikkim are nontraditional tea producing areas. Tripura produces 7.5 mkgs annually. The non-traditional areas together produce 2.98 mkgs annually. Arunachal Pradesh produces around 2.34 mkgs, Nagaland produces 0.20 mkgs per annum. Sikkim accounts for 0.16 mkgs, Manipur 0.11 mkgs, Meghalaya 0.10mkgs and Mizoram produces 0.07 mkgs.
NEW MODEL FOR BANKING
H
Abdur Raqeeb, Convener, National Committee on Islamic Banking & General Secretary, Indian Centre for Islamic Finance (ICIF), New Delhi made a strong plea for introduction of interest-free banking in India as it would usher in a momentum in the inclusive growth programme of the Government. He was of the opinion that it may not be correct to call this form of banking as ‘Islamic banking’ as it may send a wrong signal to people that it is ‘by the Muslims and for the Muslims’ – which it is not. He said, “Call it Islamic Finance or alternate finance as in UK, participatory finance as in Turkey or interest free finance & banking, as in many other countries. But it would be based on principles of shariah-risk sharing and on real economic growth and not financial engineering. It would stay away from the investments in businesses dealing with alcohol, drugs, gambling, armaments etc which are considered unlawful or undesirable.” He informed that interest free finance and banking has emerged as a viable alternative world over after the financial meltdown of the West in which many multinational banks went bankrupt at the end of the last decade. Today, this concept is being implemented in over 75 countries across the world and growing at a rate of more than 15 per cent. Not only Muslim countries but modern, secular and industrialised countries such as UK, France, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong have become hub of interest free Islamic finance and banking. Even World Bank is considering it as a priority area.

Health Dr. Bikash Rai Das,
Consultant Cardiac Surgeon
M
any a times, patients ask me- “Are stress and heart disease related?” Does stress increase the risk of heart disease? Stress is a normal part of life. But if left unmanaged, stress can lead to emotional, psychological, and even physical problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, chest pains, or irregular heart beats. Human beings have always been subject to stress. We evolved under stress that must have far exceeded the levels most of us face as urban workers. However, the type of mental stress we face as office warriors is of a different flavor than the physical stress our ancestors faced when they fought for survival. This suggests that our bodies may not be best suited for the type of stress we deal with now, and the maladaptive result may show up as a disease. According to an article published in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, heart attack risk after bereavement is much higher for several weeks after the loss. The day the loved one dies; the risk of a heart attack is a stunning twenty one times higher.
How Does Stress Increase the Risk for Heart Disease?
Medical researchers aren’t sure exactly how stress increases the risk of heart disease. Stress itself might be a risk factor, or it could be that high levels of stress make other risk factors (such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure) worse. For example, if you are under stress, your blood pressure goes up, you may overeat, you may exercise less, and you may be more likely to smoke. What damage does stress do? Scientific evidence also indicates that mental stress can adversely affect the cardiovascular system. Tasks like complex mental arithmetic and public speaking can produce
HEART BREAK WRECK!
Stress can be caused by a physical or emotional change, or a change in your environment that requires you to adjust or respond. Things that make you feel stressed are called “stressors.”Stressors can be minor hassles, major lifestyle changes, or a combination of both. Being able to identify stressors in your life and releasing the tension they cause are the keys to managing stress.
anxiety in almost anyone. They can lead to surges in heart rate and blood pressure. Stressful tasks can cause an actual decrease in blood flow to the heart, mimicking what happens during a heart attack, though to a lesser extent. Studies by scientists have documented reductions in blood flow in response to stressful situations. The decrease in blood flow in the arteries of the heart that occurs with mental stress can be as great as with physical exertion. In patients who already have coronary artery disease, these effects can be problematic. Probably in someone who is young and healthy, the effects will be minimal. However, in people with a predisposition to heart disease, the additional burden that stress places on the heart could, in extreme circumstances, precipitate heart attacks. If stress itself is a risk factor for heart disease, it could be because chronic stress exposes your body to unhealthy, persistently elevated levels of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. Studies also link stress to changes in the way blood clots, which increases the risk of heart attack.
What Causes Stress?
Stress can be caused by a physical or emotional change, or a change in your environment that requires you to adjust or respond. Things that make you feel stressed are called “stressors.”Stressors can be minor hassles, major lifestyle changes, or a combination of both. Being able to identify stressors in your life and releasing the tension they cause are the keys to managing stress. Some common stressors that can affect people at all stages of life are like illness, either personal or of a family member or friend, death of a friend or loved one, problems in a personal relationship, work overload,
starting a new job, unemployment, retirement, pregnancy, relocation, daily hassles, legal problems, financial concerns etc.
What Are the Warning Signs of Stress?
When you are exposed to long periods of stress, your body gives warning signals that something is wrong. These physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral warning signs should not be ignored. They tell you that you need to slow down. If you continue to be stressed and you don’t give your body a break, you are likely to develop health problems like heart disease. You could also worsen an existing illness. Some common physical warning signs and symptoms of stress are-dizziness, general aches and pains, headaches, indigestion, muscle tension, difficulty sleeping, racing heart, ringing in the ears, stooped posture, sweaty palms, tiredness, exhaustion, trembling, weight gain or loss, upset stomach etc. Similarly one can have mental signs like constant worry, difficulty making decisions, forgetfulness, inability to concentrate, lack of creativity, loss of sense of humor, poor memory etc. Emotional changes are also common like- anger, anxiety, crying, depression, feeling powerless, frequent mood swings, irritability, loneliness, negative thinking, nervousness, sadness etc. Some behavioral signs can also manifest in the form of bossiness, compulsive eating, critical attitude of others, explosive actions, frequent job changes, impulsive actions, increased use of alcohol or drugs, withdrawal from relationships or social situations
How Can I Cope With Stress?
After you’ve identified the cause of stress in your life, the next step is to learn techniques that can help you cope. There are many techniques you can use to manage stress. Some of which you can learn yourself, while other techniques may require the guidance of a trained therapist.
Some common techniques to cope with stress: Eat and drink sensibly Abusing alcohol and food may seem to reduce stress, but it actually adds to it. You do not have to meet others’ expectations or demands. It’s OK to say “no.” Stop smoking Aside from the obvious health risks of cigarettes, nicotine acts as a stimulant and brings on more stress symptoms. Exercise regularly Choose non-competitive exercise and set reasonable goals. Exercise has been shown to release endorphins (natural substances that help you feel better and maintain a positive attitude.) Relax every day Choose from a variety of different techniques. Take responsibility Control what you can and leave behind what you cannot control. Reduce causes of stress Many people find life is filled with too many demands and too little time. Effective time-management skills and taking time out for yourself is always helpful. Examine your values and live by them. The more your actions reflect your beliefs, the better you will feel, no matter how busy your life is. Set realistic goals and expectations It’s OK, and healthy, to realize you cannot be 100% successful at everything all at once. Get enough rest Even with proper diet and exercise, you can’t fight stress effectively without rest. You need time to recover from exercise and stressful events. The time you spend resting should be long enough to relax your mind as well as your body. Some people find that taking a nap in the middle of the day helps them reduce stress. Maintain a positive attitude and self-esteem They are good defenses against stress and heart disease because they help you view stress as a challenge rather than a problem. A positive attitude keeps you in control when there are inevitable changes in your life. A positive attitude means telling yourself there are things you can do to improve certain situations and admitting that sometimes there’s nothing you can do.

his restaurant is a new find and G Plus takes a sneakpeek at it. It has Indian cuisine as well as Italian. A good place to hang out with friends or colleagues. This place has a terrific menu and is a must for pasta and pizza lovers! The family size pizza suits two very well and if one’s conscious of putting on weight, a medium- sized one is okay too. Grilled chicken pizza is great here. The layer of cheese, the veggies and the chicken fillings are proportionately put together to make the pizza more satisfactory. If you’re a pasta lover, go hit this spot because you won’t regret it. The veg-pasta is so delicious that even a non-vegetarian would want to change places for a day. If you’re a fan of white-sauce pasta, let me tell you that the pasta has corn, mushroom, capsicum and more to delight your senses. Choose your preferences accordingly. It is a place for vegetarians and nonvegetarians alike. For two people (non-veg), the price shouldn’t be more than 500 bucks to a thousand (If you guys are going to hog over the platter). The mustard sauce is a must while you’re lost in relishing the pizza! It is my current favourite for pizzas and pastas. Try the starters if you do not want to gobble up something heavy. The ambience is good and suits for personal or professional meetings. It is not a crowded place and therefore, a good place for even a bookworm or a cranky office-goer to enjoy there alone. The price range of the items is pretty reasonable given the quality of the menu. They have a mock-tail section too which is yet to open.
A winter’s treat As the winter announces its arrival, the city dwellers seek to find refuge in food hubs. Now is the time to stop thinking and start eating and don’t worry, the jackets and sweaters will take care of your extra weight. There’s a craze for Italian cuisine and the most familiar food items are pizza and pasta. This winter, try the Italian cuisine!

Tressed to Kill GARGEE BARUAH
If clothes define your personality, hairstyles define your mood! While one’s closet has an important role to play in one’s social life, hairstyle too has been a significant fashion statement. G Plus spotted some exciting and interesting hair trends to try out. So, pick up your style and flaunt it.
I
f you are a pretty little damsel with those highlighted cheek-bones then you would look fantastic with almost any hair-style. However, for the others, you can analyse your face type and then, figure out what suits you the best.
THE CHUBBY ONES THE RECTANGULAR MUG • If you have a rectangular frame, straight hair would suit you best. Remember the lead actress from ‘Ghosts of Girlfriends Past’? The heroine has a rectangular facial frame and she sports straight hair below-the shoulder level length. The straight hair with the fringes parted sideways highlights her strong jaw-line and her awesomely chiselled cheekbones. She looks great in that as not any other usual hairstyle would make her look that good. • Most of you must have been ardent fans of the Hollywood hotness Eva Green. Did you notice her in ‘Casino Royale’ or in ‘Perfect Sense’? She is another pretty woman who has a rectangular frame and she too looks best in straight hair with her fringes. However, we’ve seen her portray curls with equal ease too and that adds another dimension to your look since you’d want to experiment with your hair as much as you can. Don’t forget the fringes as they will be an icing on the cake! Curls break the monotony of your organised life, oops, hair! • If you have a nearly oval face, the above-mentioned hairstyles will do just fine However, you are blessed with the choice of more experimentation because your facial structure can carry a wide variety of hairstyles. You can sport short hair with soft curls and fringes covering your forehead (if your face is not tiny, or else it’ll be unnoticeable). • You can carry long locks with grace as well but try leaving your hair a little wavy and make sure your hair is silky in texture or else it would become unmanageable (good if it’s naturally wavy and silky). Priyanka Chopra has often portrayed this look. • Long straight hair would look trendy if you try a good hair cut to leave your hair a layered cut, or a ‘v’ or ‘u’ cut towards the end. If you plan to leave your long hair straight, then do not go for much experimenting because it looks classy and very much Indian on its own. Remember Aishwariya Rai in ‘Devdas’? • If you have wavy hair, you can sport the ‘uncombed hair’ look. You have nothing to worry if some people cannot comprehend your messyhair avatar because the rest of the crowd knows that you stand out! • Also, check out Uma Thurman’s hairstyle in ‘Pulp Fiction.’ She looks stunning with the hairstyle she dons as her sharp features are enhanced by the look.
• If you have an oval face or a pointed one or any other type, do not go for a Plain-Jane look because your face would look dull. For an oval face that is chubby, you can sport shoulder length straight hair with a hair-cut that makes your hair strands pointed and longer towards the sideways of the face than the portion at the back. • Go for soft curls towards the lower strands if you have long or shoulder length hair. Remember Drew Barrymore in ‘Charlie’s Angels’ or in ‘Music and Lyrics’? She is one woman who is chubby and looks all the more prettier even without trying to look skinny.
ACCESSORISE You can also add dazzle to your hair by wearing suitable accessories to go with the look you’re carrying. Some hair-dos and accessory tips:
The great Indian plait
Once I say ‘plait’, it shouldn’t bring to your mind the disciplinarian tactics of school life when some of us had to be confined to tying plaits. The plait you tie (outside school life) should be done in a casual way by tying it loosened a bit so that some of the hair is left out to dance to the wind as you can imagine in your little Bollywood hearts. Unless it is a formal occasion like weddings, you can wear a tiny pretty hair accessory like a fancy cute clip, which come in varying designs. Check out Pantaloons for such accessories.
2) The head-gear
THE SMALL ONES • Victoria Beckham is popular as a fashion sensation for the way she carries herself. She’s always on a fashion adventure ride and no matter what hair-do she decides to pull up, she ends up looking only stunning. The boy cut or the blunt cut with a few bangs rolled up in the front or parted sideways looks smart and totally hot! • Even Natalie Portman and Katie Holmes have small face frames and the usual hairstyle they flaunt is straight or wavy hair let loose frequently being tied into a messy bun or a knot pinned up with a clutch. They have flaunted elegant curls as well while wearing formal dresses as well as maxi dresses.
The head-gear looks fantastic. It has been donned by many heroines from the Retro era to the present times as it can never look wrong. From ethnic wear to fusion, the head-gear stands tall in its individuality. You can choose the right head-gear to team up with your look
Some signature hairstyles include the one the girl dons in the movie ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ (the American version). If you’re crazy and open to experimenting, go ahead. She is petite and has a small, round and rather pale face but her unusual and ‘I don’t give a damn’ hair style has fans in the feminist crowd!

here is something about stereotypical Bollywood heroes, the notions of which are constantly shifting contours these days. Earlier they used to reek of idealism and were heavily moralistic. Interestingly, Singh Saab The Great reprises the same flavor of righteousness in the film and gets preachy without hitting the wrong note. It is the return of the desi hero on screen after a good long time. The villain is an overbearing evil spawn of a human being who destroys Karanjit Talwar’s life with a

ori Tere Pyaar me is a crazy love story of Sriram (Imran Khan) and Diya(Kareena Kapoor). Born in Bangalore, Sriram Venkat is a laid-back, young architect who doesn’t value relationships. While Sriram is careless about everything in world, his girlfriend Diya Sharma, a social activist, wants to change the world. Though, they start a casual relationship, with time they get emotional. But finally complex circumstances, different ideologies and mindsets drive them apart. However, Sriram realizes that his love for Diya is something more than carnal lust and he can’t live without her. But Diya has moved on and get settled in an interior village Jhumli, Gujrat. When Sriram lands up to Jhumli and tries to woo her back, Diya strongly refuses him. But this time Sriram can go to any extent to get his love back. Sriram tries to impress Diya by helping the people of Jhumli. But Sriram is not accustomed to the thought of helping others. He puts his efforts to make Diya believe that he is changed and now he is like any other villagers of Jhumli. Will Sriram be able to win back his love? Will he be able to bring about the change in Jhumli? This is Bollywood candy floss at its best - fluffy, sugary, pretty and pink. You cannot go to watch ‘Gori Tere Pyaar Mein’ and take it seriously. What you will take seriously is that Punit Malhotra cannot make romcoms. At all. He aims for Karan Johar-ish material, but falls short hopelessly. Too many songs and dances that are not peppy enough. Many costumes changes and dressed up backdrops that fail to mesmerize. Metatextual references fall too. The lead pair of Kareena Kapoor and Imran Khan is goodlooking, but look uninterested and passionless. They smile, serenade and smirk without any conviction. Punit’s crab-consulting Romeo is fair-skinned

and polished enough to remove any trace of his Tamilian bloodline, while his Juliet is (also) fair-skinned and spirited to make a social makeover in a rustic village.Their skin tones, which would’ve otherwise gone unnoticed, is often highlighted, some times in the most inappropriate manner, to drill home the point that South Indians and the downtrodden can only be dark-skinned.They fall in love, over one wedding song and numerous social revolts. Their parents play the stereotypical mom-dads, each emphasizing Bollywood’s North-South divide. The Punjabis are loud, while the Tamilians speak in a weird twang with a white powder smeared on their foreheads. The only liberating change, if you can call it one, is that both are rich. The lovers split because their ideologies do not gel. One’s a hardcore socialist, while the other a selfconfessed lazy-bum. After a few hiccups, which unfold in a rustic village separated from the world by a shaky rope bridge, they unite in “happily ever after”.Imran Khan does either of the three things in the movie – sleepwalks, use his eyebrows to emote or take to his Ray bans to make up for his lack of performance. Kareena Kapoor Khan breezes through as the feisty Dia Sharma, who picks any, and every, issue to revolt against. How she manages to fight for issues and still look like million dollars in her snazzy outfits and manicured nails is anybody’s guess. Probably that’s why she believes that merely building a bridge will solve an entire village’s problems.Newbies Shraddha Kapoor and Esha Gupta are part of this messy affair, but no one’s got time to look at their mistakes in the grander scheme of things. Overall, you can watch it if you are love sick in life and feel that Bollywood cliché love stories relates to your lifestyle. All the best.

seething brutality. The film makes a comment of how the worst of evils can’t overshadow the kindness and goodness in the world. The last movie which came closest to this theme was Prakash Jha’s Satyagraha which lost plot despite being well intentioned. Anil Sharma, however, uses a more layman method to reach out a similar message to the public. Singh Saab The Great wasn’t a sermon as from time to time the director remembers to give its audiences judicious dozes of action and masala. Sunny Deol syncs himself in an all powerful and strong avatar. In the role of an intense and upright man, Deol fits perfectly with his gentle eyes that reflect goodness. I would take the cue to mention that the film has awfully believable stunts. When Sunny Deol thrashes someone with that intensity it sounds more plausible unlike a lanky looking hero beating goons to pulp. He is solemn is his role which becomes one of the film’s strongest highlight points. Anil Sharma’s direction doesn’t get overtly heavy handed as it manages to leave by a good impact, though it is important to chide the director for making us bear through the statutory romantic track that acts as an initial catalyst in creating the skeletal framework of the story. It is a given that you’ll have to sit through the exhaustive chemistry of Urvashi and Sunny to deserve the combustible teaming of Prakash Raj and Sunny Deol. The film’s tacky camerawork and terrible music with songs called ‘Palang Tod’ can all be excused for its flavorsome nifty action scenes. The film’s over familiar story with the family angle and social welfare theme doesn’t quite wear you out due to its satisfactory ending. This isn’t Anil Sharma’s best work but it is watchable. Singh Saab The Great is far from an impeccable film. Rather it is an exclusively loud film but in an era where Bollywood is becoming unusually predictable, here is a story which shows flair of rare novelty. For Sunny Deol and Prakash Raj’s pummelling duels, I found the film satiating for its potent message. It is way better than the ranks of awfully mediocre masala film we are compelled to watch week after week. A strict not-to-missed for Sunny Deol fans who are sure to have an enjoyable time.

has come up as one of the most sought after careers among the youths. A career in fashion designing helps to enhance the creative flair of the people who possess a sense of style. The major work of a fashion designer is to design garments, cutting the cloth, sewing the pieces together and finally merchandising it. While for marketing and familiarizing the various styles and products, it is done through ramp shows and fashion write-ups. The youths who have their own style of dressing (but should be creative) and believe in setting a trend rather than following a trend set by others must join fashion designing to showcase their creative side to the vast world outside.

Your weekly dose of HOROSCOPE ARIES
Your amazing personal energy is crying out for exercise of some kind on Monday, so try to indulge it. Even a brisk walk should do the trick! You need to really listen to people this week, though it may be hard to avoid the temptation to criticize flaws as soon as you spot them. Encourage the people in your life to look at things with fresh eyes and critique their own work — they should learn more that way. The weekend is a time of emotional turmoil for you, though the odds are good that you don’t know exactly what’s going on down deep.
TAURUS You start the week still fired up from something that happened recently, and might be able to use that energy to get payback of some kind. Turn on the charm midweek, though — you need to make the most of your connectedness to other people while it lasts. You might be able to land a new friend or romantic partner. Health issues may dominate your mind on Thursday and Friday, but they can be dealt with using positive measures and help from friends and family. You’re a bit more sensitive than usual this weekend, so try to avoid folks who rub you the wrong way.
GEMINI You don’t back down on Monday, even in the face of overwhelming evidence. You may not take your opinions all that seriously, but you defend them tenaciously! A new understanding comes your way midweek, and while it might be a bit disruptive, you can accommodate it eventually. Have fun on Thursday and Friday — you deserve a break, and you and your people are all filled with great social energy! Volunteering or community service (however you decide to define that) is perfect for your mood this weekend.
CANCER
Monday is a great day for shopping — within your limits, of course! You are more attuned to quality than usual and might find some deals. In the middle of the week, you need to reopen lines of communication that have been down for some time. That may start out tricky, but it gets easier. Let your schedule fill up on Thursday and Friday, as it’s better for your mood to keep busy rather than puttering around aimlessly. The weekend brings some heavy emotional business, but you are completely ready for it!
LEO You feel like a rock star as the week gets going, so live the life! If you want to skip out of responsibilities and do your own thing, you should. Money problems take you back to reality on Tuesday or Wednesday, but you should be able to wrap your mind around them without too much trouble. Call on support if you need it. As the week draws to a close, consider a date, even if you’ve been with your partner for decades. Your romantic energy is strong! The weekend is perfect for deep thought — at least one big issue in your life needs serious attention.
VIRGO Your big heart is a major player on Monday, and it might be hard for you to walk by any scene of suffering, however minor it may be. Rack up some karma! The middle of the week sees you at your most energetic, and it’s a great time to finish up a project or go for a victory of some kind. Don’t expect it to last forever, though — by Thursday or Friday, you should run into some small setback that would discourage anyone else but you. Keep moving forward, and see if you can figure out what’s really going on over the weekend.
TIMEPASS
LIBRA
You and your best friends are in perfect sync as the week begins, so it’s a good time to resolve old confusions or make plans for later. Tuesday and Wednesday are almost shockingly slow moving, and you shouldn’t worry if you don’t make any progress on work or home projects — they really can wait! Your romantic energy is fully engaged later in the week, so be sure to make time with your sweetie or go looking for someone new if you’re single. You may feel a little antsy this weekend, but making a few changes should soothe you.
SCORPIO You should do whatever you can to resolve disputes in a friendly way on Monday, because it’s all too easy for egos to get wrapped up so tightly they can’t budge. New information comes in midweek that intrigues you and almost certainly sets you off in a new and exciting direction — make time for it. A challenge comes your way on Thursday or Friday that appears to be daunting but should actually prove to be rather easy to overcome. Your amazing energy this weekend should help you get past anything that has been holding you back.
SAGITTARIUS You can’t help but speak out as the week begins, even if your opinion isn’t the most popular — yet. Keep talking and you should convince folks. Slow down on Tuesday and Wednesday, as rushing only sets you back farther. If other folks pass you by, you know you’ll do the same to them later on. The legal system is important later in the week, but maybe in a rather unexpected or beneficial way. Every now and then, the system works! Pay attention to your dreams and daydreams this weekend, as they are much clearer than usual.
CAPRICORN Monday is just like Mondays are supposed to be — slow, bumbling and best seen as just a bridge between Sunday and Tuesday. Once it’s past, your good energy starts to flow back and you find it easy to educate yourself on all sorts of new topics. It’s a great time for you to get to know people better. You might make a career move on Thursday or Friday, though it could be so small that others might not see it for what it is. It all ties into your ambitions, which are much more obvious and easily accessed this weekend.
AQUARIUS Your imagination is your best guide on Monday, and you should try to avoid censoring yourself or sticking with the plan if a better opportunity presents itself. Shopping and financial issues at work could be stressful in the middle of the week, and you ought to make sure that you’ve got as much information as you can handle. That brainpower you are so famous for is fully active on Thursday and Friday, so you ought to be able to impress folks with your quick wit. The weekend is a good time to think about your job and career as a whole, and maybe to think about making changes.
PISCES There’s a lot going on this week, and if you can get focus on Monday, it might last long enough for you to handle it all. Try to keep from straying too far. A project you’re working on midweek is more important than it appears, so you should try your best to apply yourself to it totally. Resentment might build up on Thursday or Friday if you let yourself obsess over some debt owed you by a friend or family member. See the big picture! You ought to be able to separate the good from the bad with greater ease this weekend, so get to it!
JUST FOR LAUGHs An old farmer had owned a large farm for many years. He had a huge man-made pond out back with a beautiful picnic area. For years it was the perfect place to unwind or hold a family get together. As the farmer grew older, his “Oasis” was used less and less. It eventually became the local swimming hole and while his neighbors occasionally took advantage of the pond, he rarely made an appearence. One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond. He hadn’t been there in a while and felt the urge to pay a visit to check on things. As he neared the pond,

he heard loud playful voices giggling and laughing. As he came closer he was astonished to see that a bunch of young women had decided to skinny dip in his pond. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end of the pond. One of the women shouted to him, “We’re not coming out until you leave!” The old man replied, “I didn’t come down here to watch you ladies swim or make you get out of the pond naked. I’m here to feed the alligator.”

Should the law intervene in sexual harassment cases on its own? Santanu Kumar Sarkar
Bedatrayee Mitra
Advocate, Gauhati High Court
S
POINT
exual harassment includes such unwelcome sexually determined behavior as Physical contact and advances; A demand or request for sexual favours; Sexually coloured remarks; Showing pornography; Any other unwelcome physical, verbal or non-verbal conduct of sexual nature Tarun Tejpal’s alleged sexual misdemeanor triggered a massive debate on Friday over the safety of women at the workplace and led the government to reverse its decision to nominate Tejpal to the Prasar Bharati Board. Cries for justice flooded the public and social media space following Tejpal’s description of his crime as “a bad lapse of judgment” and his decision to “atone for it by recusing himself from Tehelka’s editorship and office for six months”. Tejpal is accused of assaulting the victim twice during the magazine’s ‘Think’ conference at Goa recently, despite the latter reminding him that she was his daughter’s age. “I needed time to process the fact that Tarun had assaulted me… my father’s ex-colleague and friend… someone I had so deeply respected,” the victim said in her email to Tehelka. She sought a probe under the Vishakha judgment and a written apology from Tejpal with an acknowledgement to be circulated in Tehelka. Under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Workplace Act, 2012, victims can choose to press a criminal charge in a court or a probe by the sexual harassment complaint cell. The Goa Crime Branch, meanwhile, took suo motu notice of the cognizable offence (as per SC judgments) and sent for CCTV footage of the elevators in a Goa hotel where the alleged assault took place on November 7-8. In Delhi, the National Commission for Women wrote to Press Council of India and Hon’ble chief Justice of India Markandey Katju demanding an inquiry into the case. The Vishaka case of sexual harassment at workplace is a landmark judgment by the Supreme Court of India.
“
In case of sexual harassment the victim can lodge FIR at a Police Station or can file a criminal complaint petition before the Judicial Magistrtate’s court and as well as can file complaint before the Woman Commission.” Not because it was an attack on working women’s fundamental right to work without fear and prejudice. Not because it is a saga of immense torture of a naïve working woman. It is a landmark case because for the first time ever it was officially recognised at such a high level of need for laws for sexual harassment and laying down of guidelines of sexual harassment of working woman. In case of sexual harassment the victim can lodge FIR at a Police Station or can file a criminal complaint petition before the Judicial Magistrtate’s court and as well as can file complaint before the Woman Commission. But after disclosure of the sexual harassment Court can take its own course for the ends of justice and to punish the offender. Therefore, the law should be allowed to take its own course in sexual harassment cases as there are Guidelines and norms laid down by the Hon’ble Supreme Court in “Vishaka and Others Vs. State of Rajasthan and Others” in the year 1997. But Hon’ble court can take the legal actions in camera for the best interest of the victims of sexual harassment.

exual harassment is bullying or coercion of a sexual nature, or the unwelcome or inappropriate promise of rewards in exchange for sexual favours. In most modern legal contexts, sexual harassment is illegal. It is unlawful to harass a person (an applicant or employee) because of that person’s sex. Harassment can include “sexual harassment” or unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favours, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature. But, again in every case, there are always two sides to a story. There is a film by Akira Kurosawa of 1950, where the plot revolves around about how a rape case has three different interpretations by three different people. The accused, the victim and the witness, all three of them had a different story to say about the incident. Finally, the judgment of the case was kept unexplained. The irony is that those
the law can also be misused by anyone because in a rape case, medical tests can prove the claim of the victim, whereas in harassment cases, everything depends on how powerful the argument, witnesses and evidence are.
COUNTERPOINT days scientific technique was not fully developed and there were no medical tests done to find out the truth. Similarly, there are other complicated cases, where judgement is not easy. After the December 16th Delhi gangrape case, the law for crime against women was reworked by the Indian government and implemented. The law is stricter now, but after the law was enacted, many cases of rape and sexual harassment were reported. Some experts even say that the sexual harassment cases started getting reported more after the incident. But then, the law can also be misused by anyone because in a rape case, medical tests can prove the claim of the victim, whereas in harassment cases, everything depends on how powerful the argument, witnesses and evidence are. In a country like India, buying witnesses and creating evidence is not that tough. So, if a woman perceives a situation differently and feels that a male’s approach towards her was abusive or harassing, she might be inclined to file a charge. But, maybe the man had meant something else, maybe the approach of the man was interpreted wrongly - they can always have a discussion and sort it out before the law interferes into the case and stretc the situation. Sometimes open discussions are better to sought out differences rather than going to the law and defaming people who could also be innocent. There are many cases when females have reported false cases to defame people as an act of revenge. There are also cases where females indulge in sexual activity with consent and then go on to change their stance to gain favours or blackmail or when the intentions are not completed as expected. They go out in public to defame the partner. Is that not unethical? So, I feel law can take its course, but only when it is required, it’s not necessary for them and the media to poke their nose everywhere.

The ongoing close down of Cinemax: Guwahati anyway does not have too many good movie theatres and whatever was there is also plagued by problems.
