With new revelations coming in every hour, the Sheena Bora murder case is getting murkier. But the mystery is yet to come to its conclusion and with the kind of powerful people involved, this one seems like it is going to drag on for a while.

f the reports and rumours are to be believed, the murder of Sheena Bora seems to be revolving around illicit relations, false identities and hunger for power. The Guwahati born Indrani Mukerjea who was once known as Pori Bora, has created shock and sensation all over the country. With gasps of disbelief at the tale of a mother murdering her daughter in cold blood echoing from all corners of the country, the fact that Indrani is the wife of a media tycoon has put the entire story into the spotlights of one and all. Born to a humble family, no one in the locality thought that the Sundarpur girl will once make the city popular for all the wrong reasons. Indrani is accused of killing her own daughter Sheena Bora. Her son and Sheena’s sister Mikhail Bora feels that their mother has killed his sister and was very capable of doing that. But what shocked everyone is that since 2012, Sheena was untraceable and since then, Indrani always claimed that Sheena was in the US, well settled and does not want to talk to any of her family member. Moreover Sheena was introduced to people in Mumbai as Indrani’s sister and no one exactly knew who Sheena and Mikhail’s biological father was.

Indrani studied in Shillong Indrani’s paternal house is located in the Sunderpur area of Guwahati near the Guwahati Zoo, and the elderly people of the locality remember her as Pori, who according to them was the smartest girl in the locality in her age group. A 62-year-old lady who is a neighbour to Indrani’s family said, “Our family came and started living here in 1980, when Pori (Indrani) used to study in Holy Child School and used to be very smart. As soon as we came here, one day we got the news that Indrani had run away from school and if I remember well, she was in class nine then. She boarded a train to Calcutta but as she was in her

school uniform, the ticket collector of the train handed her over to the police. The police informed her father and all the people of our locality went to the police station to bring her back. After a few years, when she passed her tenth exams with flying colours, everyone was very happy. Indrani’s father Upendra Kumar Bora was a very respected and a powerful man in the locality those days. He was also strict with Indrani but she was very ambitious. After class ten, Pori went to Shillong for further studies.” The neighbour further said that she is not sure in which college Indrani studied but she feels it was Lady Keane College. The neighbour said that it was after her graduation in Shillong that everything changed in Indrani’s life and her family.

There are also reports coming in about an illicit relationship between Indrani and Upen Bora, who according to the reports is not her biological father.

The step father angle According to a few media reports, sources in Mumbai police have narrated some of the revelations made by Indrani while interrogation. These are:• Indrani’s father forced himself on her when she was a child • Sheena was apparently born out of a physical relationship between Indrani and her father • Sheena’s birth certificate mentions her grandparents’ names as her parents. Then who is Mikhail’s father? Indrani’s so called father or reported step father, breaking his silence, informed the media that he is Sheena’s grandfather and not father.

He said that Sheena and Mikhail are Sidharth Das’s children and not his. When enquired if Indrani was married to someone from Shillong, Upendra Kumar Bora said, “That has to be explored.”

Mikhail used to beat up his grandparents Though Sheena according to her friends and neighbours was a very bright girl, some neighbours seem to have a different opinion about Mikhail. A neighbour has said that Mikhail used to come home drunk and beat up his grandparents regularly. Mikhail after hearing the news that his mother Indrani was arrested for murdering his sister came out openly against his mother and claimed that he has evidence that his mother had killed his sister. But on being asked about his silence all these days when Sheena disappeared, he said that he had enquired about it to his mother but she threatened him that if he do not stop asking about Sheena, she would stop sending money to him. He claimed he was poor and needed money for survival and hence he did not question her anymore. But, if he was really concerned about his sister why did he stop questioning about her whereabouts? The Mumbai police team reached Guwahati and after questioning him for hours, took him to Mumbai for further investigations. Mikhail also claimed that his life is also in danger as well. A neighbour said, “After Indrani got married to Peter, she used to send a lot of money to her family and to Mikhail. She even bought them two cars (one Esteem and one Verna).They still use the Esteem but Mikhail sold off the Verna.” The neighbour further said that in 2013, Indrani had visited and there was a big fight at the Bora’s house when Indrani

Mother of all murders Given the involvement of highprofile personalities in the murder, Mumbai police are exercising utmost care in the investigations. Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria is personally monitoring the investigations by a team at Khar police station and led by PI Dinesh Kadam. According to him, Sheena was strangulated to death and her body set afire after pouring petrol. The murder took place on 24 April 2012 and the body was found by Raigad police on 23 May. The police had unearthed remains of a decomposed body after villagers at Gagode in Pen tehsil complained of a foul odour emanating from the area. Sheena’s and Mikhail’s school records mention their grandparents Upendra Kumar Bora and Durga Rani Bora - as their parents. Sheena was studying in Guwahati till she came to Mumbai and took admission at St Xavier’s College in 2006. Since the Boras were presented as their parents, it was easy for Indrani to pass them off as siblings. And no one, including

Peter Mukerjea, could smell a rat. The police officials said that Indrani sent both her children to her parents’ house when she married Sanjeev Khanna but according to the local people in Guwahati, both the children were raised by their grandparents only. After she left the children in Guwahati, Indrani did not return for 10 years. However, she used to regularly send money to run the house. That is why Mikhail never raised the issue of Sheena’s disappearance beyond a point. This would have cost him his monthly allowance.

Relation confusion After Indrani’s arrest it was reported that Mikhail and Sheena are Indrani’s children and not siblings. Indrani’s first husband was Sidharth Das, second husband Sanjeev Khanna (another accused in Sheena’s murder) and third Peter Mukerjea who is a former media honcho who headed Star TV network India and also launched other news channels later. Peter’s son from his earlier marriage, Rahul Mukerjea had a relation with Sheena, which Indrani was against and later when Sheena told the truth to Rahul and Peter, it irked Indrani. That might have been one of the reasons for her murder. But, who was Sheena and

Mikhail’s father? According to Indrani’s father, Sidharth Das who is a businessman in Tripura is the father, but Indrani met Sidharth only after going to Kolkata and according to Guwahati neighbours there was someone from Shillong who is the father to both the Children before Indrani went to Kolkata. With newer reports it is also speculated that because Indrani’s step father forced himself on her, Sheena was born. All this while why didn’t the police search for Siddhart Das and if he was the father, why did Mikhail never mention that Siddhart was his father? But till DNA and all other tests are done it would be impossible to solve the relationship mystery.

Motive? As of now, the motive is not yet clear. Was it money and property or was it just to protect the truth from spilling out? As the country waits for the answers to one of the most high profile crimes in recent times, the evidence, speculations, statements and contradictions are just adding to the mystery and confusion. ispur Polyclinic is having to face false allegations made by one Bani Devi that the doctors had asked them to buy medicines even after her father’s death, which took place on the 25th August after a surgery for gall bladder stone. Birendra Borkataky (72) who was admitted to the hospital on 17th of August, was suffering from hypertension, cardiac problem and lung problem (COPD). “The patient came to the hospital with Gangrenous Cholecystitis gall bladder which was in a critical stage and before operating, we informed the family members that as it was in a critical stage, anything might happen and we might not save the patient. We asked them to sign a consent certificate that the operation would be conducted with the interest of the family members as he was a heart patient and anything might happen after the surgery,” said Dr. Barman while speaking to G Plus. Dr. Barman said that as the patient was critical, no doctor had the courage to operate the gall bladder for which he suffered from gangrenous cholecystitis and thereafter we decided to go ahead with surgery seeing the condition of the patient. “We proceeded only after the family agreed for the surgery and signed the

After the operation, he was completely fine and shifted to a cabin after two days. But after the shifting, he again suffered from heart problem and thereafter, he was again shifted to ICU. The patient suffered from respiratory distress. We tried to resuscitate the patient and took one and half hour for it and when we come to know that we wouldn’t be able to save the patient, we informed the family members,” said Dr. Barman. The doctor also said that the attendants of the patient who alleged that the doctors had asked them to buy medicines even after the death of the patient is false as the medicines have been used during the time of

resuscitation and those medicines should be paid for by the patient. “I asked them to bring the medicines worth Rs. 2400 and they told the media that it was the medicines worth Rs. 32000,” added Dr. Barman. Moreover, the daughter of Borkataky, Bani Devi lodged an FIR at the Dispur Police station but after investigation, when the body was supposed to be sent for post mortem, the family refused and dropped all the charges against the hospital. The family members thereafter withdraw the case and asked the hospital authorities to release the body. The authorities also informed G Plus, that discussions are on and they might take action against the patients’ family for levelling false allegations against the hospital.

ailure to handle heartbreaks and consequent despair have taken a toll on the youth in Assam. The issue of failure in love and youngsters here failing to cope with the pain themselves has led to an alarming situation as the state recorded the highest numbers of suicides in the country due to the same reason in 2014. In the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) statistics, Assam topped the chart with at least 519 person committing suicide due to failure in love last year. “Among them 335 were male and 184 were female who chose to kill themselves over failure in love affairs,” the figures said. There were 494 such cases in the state in 2011, followed by 401 the next year. The figure shot up in 2013 with 650 such deaths. Manisha Dev Barman, an academic in applied behavioural science, said, “Rejection in love affairs leads to depression and prolonged depression finally increases the risk of suicidal tendencies. Loneliness or alienation is leading to egoistic suicides among people.” The records too revealed that men were prone to such suicides

than women. Similarly, failure in competitive examinations has also contributed to a huge numbers of suicides in the state. In fact, the state recorded the second highest number of suicides with 254 suicides due to it in 2014. Maharashtra topped the list in this category with 359 such deaths. “At least 151 male and 103 female have committed suicide last year after they failed in various examinations in the state,” said the NCRB statistics adding that out of the total suicides some 397 were committed by students. What came as another shocking revelation was that in most of the cases, police investigation could not even find the reasons behind the suicides last year. “Out of the total suicides, the reason behind highest numbers of suicides which was 958 was listed as ‘reasons not known’. Investigation in these cases have so far failed to unearth why these persons had chosen to kill him or herself,” the report said. At least 3546 cases of suicides were registered across Assam in 2014 with a rate of 11.1 percent which is higher than the national average of 10.6 percent.

hile several recent murder mysteries still remain unsolved, another one has popped up for the Guwahati police. On the morning of August 26th, when 26-year-old model and actor, Sweety Baruah, was found dead in her bedroom at Livin Apartments on Jaya Path in the Bora Service area. The victim, who hailed from Golaghat, had been living in her Bora service apartment for over eighteen months along with her two sisters. Whereas, Sweety had been living in the city for the past four years and along with being featured on several calendars and TV serials, she had also featured in a television advertisement produced by NRC authorities to create public awareness about the ongoing activity. Nibarun Lahkar (27) alias Neil, the prime suspect in the mysterious death of Sweety Baruah, is a constable of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and a resident of Guwahati. Neil had met Sweety during a train journey and since then would often come to her apartment unannounced and express his love for her. Neil who is the youngest of the three brothers has also been on sick leave from March 28th and had undergone treatment for certain ailments but has been absent from work since April 8th. According to relatives, around six months ago, Lahkar befriended Sweety and since then had been coercing her to get into a relationship. She turned him down several times and also informed him that she was married. He had earlier slashed his arms and banged his head on the wall when she refused his proposal. Sweety was married and also leaves behind a seven-year-old child. Her husband, a junior engineer in the agriculture department, lives with her child in Golaghat. Even Sweety’s family members have accused Lahkar of murdering her and also suspect the involvement of other relatives as well. Sweety’s relatives alleged that the murder had been pre planned and hinted the involvement of assistance in committing the murder.

The incident Sweety’s body was found in her room on Wednesday morning and since she had the habit of waking up late at times, so she was not disturbed by her sisters who were living along with Sweety in her apartment. Later at around 11am in the morning, when one of the sisters went inside the room in order to serve breakfast, she came across the lifeless body of Sweety and tried to wake her up. At that very moment, the family members were unaware of the fact that Sweety had passed away. According to Sweety’s mother Dipali Baruah, Sweety’s younger sister had earlier that night heard sounds of struggle at one point but ignored it. The following morning the main door of the apartment was also found to be open. Meanwhile, the security guard of the apartment had seen Lahkar go out at around 2am. The guard also added that he

had seen Lahkar coming to the apartment several times before and he was also being accompanied by Sweety on several occasions.

Police’s say Police said, “Sweety’s sisters slept in another bedroom in the same flat. They said when they entered her room this morning at 11, she was lying dead on her bed. The case is suspected to be of murder from evidence found from the scene and a conclusion will be reached after apprehending Nibarun.” “The blood clot inside her mouth and light abrasions on her arms could be signs of a struggle. From all these, it seems to be a murder,” a police source said adding, “It is suspected she died of internal haemorrhage but only the post-mortem report can confirm the cause of death.” The post-mortem report is awaited that is being conducted at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital meanwhile, a case (764/15) under section 302 has been registered in this connection at Paltan Bazar police station.

Nibarun Apprehended The primary suspect in the Sweety murder case was arrested from Hajo on the 28th of August, from Hajo. Nibarun Lahkar was suspected to be having an affair with Sweety. However, people close to the victim say that Nibarun was obsessed with Sweety, who kept turning down his proposals for love and as a result, he might have killed her. City NRC Cell to take up special drives for Institutional Homes

No citizens will be drop out from filling up NRC forms be it orphans or people living in old age homes. 87.22% submitted NRC forms as on 25th August. Verification of forms will be started from 1st September and mobile NSKs will be carried out for the people who keep on moving from place to place.

The orphans, old people and child labours’ who lives in institutional homes and private households names will also be included in NRC. 87.22% forms submitted in Kamrup (M) till 25th August.

he National Register of Citizens (NRC) updation process will take up a special drive by visiting the orphanages and old age homes to complete the NRC process to include each and every citizen from 31st August. The Government has taken up the initiative to visit the Institutional homes, orphanages and old age homes to fill up the NRC forms. “The district NRC cell will visit each and every institutional home so that no citizen would be left out from filling up the NRC form. The heads of the home have been instructed to take up the responsibility to fill up the forms of the children and elderly people living in the institutional homes,” said Mukta Nath Saikia, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Kamrup (M) while speaking to G Plus. Saikia also informed that if a child or a person does not have any reference of their parents and don’t have any identity regarding whereabouts of their parents, the head of the institutions will have to provide their signature as their guardian. Similarly, the district NRC cell will also take out a special drive for the people who work in the households and they too will be included in NRC. Their owners will be ones to sign the NRC form as their guardian in case of absence of their parents. “There are many people who are not permanent residents of Guwahati

On the other hand, some employees also staged protests stating that they were not being paid the amount which was fixed at the time of appointment. This led to a lot of misunderstanding between the employees. “The state government has made two centres and appointed 900 employees as data entry operators. These employees

do not have any link with the NRC work. The contract has been given to WIPRO and they handed over the work to ISS and the employees have been told that they will be given Rs. 5000 and an extra remuneration will be provided to them depending on the work. But a private firm has leaked an advertisement in the newspaper that the employees would be given salary of Rs. 10,000 and based on the advertisement, the employees had come for the job. But when they were paid Rs. 5000 they protested demanding for the full amount,” said an official of NRC.

Saikia also informed that each NSK consists of one LRCR, one local officer, two operators and field level officers. Each NSK should cover 25003500 households and if there are a larger number of households in any area, say 6000 households, additional officers are being deployed in such NSKs. One of the employees of a city NSK when asked about the kind of problems they have faced, said that they had not faced any such problem and they are being paid on time. She said that they had nothing to do with the incident that happened in

Hatigarh Chariali on 25th August regarding salary. Regarding selling and filling up of NRC forms by charging money from people, which is against the rule, Saikia said that they have not received any such complaint in the city and if they receive such complaints, stern action would be taken against such people. he Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems project that was launched in the year 2014 is on the verge of being introduced to the public and is expected to be launched anytime within the next two months. The project has a target of connecting 20,000 locations, 14,000 police stations and 6,000 higher officials through networking with the support of network service provided by BSNL throughout the country. The Phase I of the project that includes entry of data 466 locations in the state of Assam out of 20,000 all over India, out of which 370 locations have been initiated with data entry through SAT link provided by BSNL. So far, 5.6 lakhs diary entries and approximately 1 lakh FIRs have been entered and has recorded progress in comparison to 57% completion in 2014. Except for 92 locations including 83 police stations that have been provided with VSAT connectivity, the remote areas such as Karbi Anglong, Harmen and the Dima Hasao districts could not be connected. City bus stoppages to be decreased for free flow of traffic

Number of city bus stoppages to be withdrawn for free flow of traffic. 774 buses are running in the city under eight associations and only 8 routes are functional out of 32 routes. The stoppages should be situated within a distance of 1 to 1.5 km.

The city bus stoppages should be situated after every 1 or 1.5 kilometres, but it is seen that a number of bus stoppages in Guwahati are separated by just a 100 metre distance.

he Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic will withdraw most of the city bus stoppage as it creates nuisance in traffic flow and has suggested the creation of a bus stoppage near the Barman Diabetes Center, GS Road or near Amway. Speaking to G Plus, DCP, Traffic P.J. Goswami said, “We have taken up a new project to remove the closely located city bus stoppages as it creates problems in the free flow of traffic. The bus stoppages should be within distance of 1km to 1.5 km, but in Guwahati, especially in the Chandmari route, the bus stoppages are within a distance of 100 to 150 metres distance. Within one month, the project will be started as there are many unnecessary bus stoppages.” Goswami said, “The way that city buses are being operated in the city is unlike anywhere else in the country. There are 774 city buses out of which 197 buses run on route No 6 (Narengi to Lankeshwar) and more than 100 buses runs on route No 1 (Adabari to Basishta Mandir). There are 32 routes and buses run only on 8 routes and the other 24 routes are non-functional. For the 774 buses, there are eight associations and they are least bothered about the operation of buses. Rather they only want the profit at the end of the day.” He further stated that the regulatory body RTA doesn’t have

any role as the buses are operating through private parties and this is the main problem. The entire bus operation should be brought under an umbrella body or else it cannot be brought under control. “The manpower is less and we cannot spare two people at each stop to control the buses – preventing them from halting here and there, which they usually do. The buses that stop near the end point of the flyovers create nuisance and I myself face the problem of traffic jam when I come to office. This happens when the buses stop near the Suraj Nagar bus stoppage, which is not actually a stoppage. The buses also stop whenever anyone waves their hand anywhere on the road. By collecting Rs. 100-200 as fines, we cannot bring the buses under control,” said Goswami. “There are many important things to do than to control the city buses and as there is lack of manpower and we have to deploy our men for other work as well. As long as the police officials stand in a specific location along with the interceptor, it goes well but the interceptor too has other duties. Stringent punishment should be imposed and the MV Act which is a reformatory Act should be implemented,” added Goswami. He also stated that there is a route on the VIP road but not a single bus runs on that road although the road is a busy one.

Deepor Beel

While the Deepor Beel is gradually being destroyed due to the lack of serious conservation efforts, the once abundant migratory birds too are slowly disappearing

ituated amidst lush greenery, Deepor Beel is an extensive wetland formed by a channel of the Brahmaputra River and is the only major storm water storage basin for the city of Guwahati. One of the largest and most important Beels in the Brahmaputra valley, it is a representative wetland found within the bio geographic province, ‘Burma Monsoon Forest’. Deepor Beel has also been known to attract bird-watching enthusiasts. The wetland has been home to several birds and during winters, it attracts different species of migratory birds. In a census carried out by Dr. Parimal Ch. Bhattacharjee in the year 1989, 219 bird species were recorded while in the same year on a particular day over 20,000 birds of different species were sighted. Following which, in the same year Deepor Beel was declared a wildlife sanctuary. However, only preliminary notification had been issued back then, the final notification was only issued in the year 2004 by a team consisting of members viz. P.C. Majumdar, deputy director, state fisheries, Gautam Ganguly, former ADC Kamrup, Dr. Anil Kr. Goswami, secretary member, WWF, Moloy Baruah, President, Early Birds, Ritesh Bhattacharjee then DFO, State Zoo and a member of Paspara Samobai Samiti who represented the fishing community. Deepor Beel had also been designated as a Ramsar site in November 2002. Previously, the core area was 41.4 square kilometers as per which the wet land was notified as Deepor Beel Bird Sanctuary. “The species of migratory birds

started decreasing from the year 1992 after Deepor Beel was declared as a wild life sanctuary as several communities in the surrounding areas got intimidated and started hunting down of the birds. Also due to industrial growth, human interference and several other

factors, the sightings of such birds has drastically gone down. Pollution of the water due to several mills in the surrounding areas and different river sources is also among the key reasons for the numbers of species of birds having gone down,” asserted Moloy Baruah, President, Early Birds. “In 2006 when the city’s dumping ground was shifted to Boragaon it hammered the last nail into the coffin. Although, the land route from the dumping site would be around 7-8 kilometers but the aerial distance is merely half a kilometer which polluted the Deepor Beel. Due to the same, not more than 3,000 birds can be sighted on a particular day whereas, the figure once had been over 20,000. However, last year the figure went

down even more, when only 1500 birds were sighted,” Baruah added. In the year 1987, a census was carried out under the Asian Waterfall Census where census was carried out in several water bodies including Deepor Beel, which showed that the number of migratory birds have gone down and it is gradually decreasing over the years. One of the major reasons for the low turnout of migratory aquatic birds this year is the high water level at Deepor Beel. Aquatic birds, especially ducks and waders prefer shallow water. In 2007 a contract was provided to Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC) for the overall development of Deepor Beel but the scheme was scrapped midway. During the process several changes were made to the Beel for de-siltation due to which certain ecological changes took place and water level also went higher which hampered the growth of aquatic weeds, favoured by migratory birds for food. “Among other reasons for the disturbance in the ecological balance of the Beel is that during the 1980s, several lands around and within the Beel were sold unethically and myadi patta were also provided to certain plots. out soil off the Beel saying that it was from their part of the land. It was suggested that the Government should buy those lands back at government value and keep them with Deepor Beel,” Baruah said. In 2002 the Supreme Court declared Deepor Beel as an ecosensitive zone according to which, no unnecessary developmental procedure such as construction of buildings, use of high voltage electricity or generators would be allowed within a 10 kilometer radius of the wild life sanctuary. However, it is being opposed by several parties such as Paribekh Sambedonshil Khestra Birodhi Mancha. In order to revive the ecological system of Depor Beel, the formation of the Deepor Beel Development Authority was also suggested on the lines of the Chilika Development Authority formed in Orissa for the conservation of the Chilika Lake. But nothing has moved in that direction yet. The most notable bird species found in the sanctuary are Kingfishers, Fishing eagles, plethora of ducks, Greater Adjutant Stork, Whistling Teal, Open Billed Stork, Shoveler, Pintail, Garganey and high concentration of Pheasant tail jacanas etc. The Greater Adjutant Stork and several prey birds are among the threatened species. Some of the largest congregations of aquatic birds in Assam can be seen here, particularly in the winters. Besides its rich fauna, the sanctuary is ideal for an encounter with other wildlife including hoolock gibbons, the only ape species found in Indian subcontinent.

opular classical dancer, Menaka PP Bora is trying to promote Sattriya outside the state and abroad and being a classical dancer she is attempting to introduce the beauty of dance, which is missing in the city. Both Menaka PP Bora and her guru Indira PP Bora have introduced an authentic concept of classical dance and how the body needs to be maintained in order to perform the actual dance form. “Dance means body and it needs to be maintained well to perform quality dance. The beauty of the body expresses the beauty of dance and it is seen that if the dancers are not carrying their body well and there are a lot of expressions in the dance form, then one cannot dance easily,” said Menaka P P Bora while speaking to G Plus. Menaka inherited a rich artistic heritage and understanding of the art world in general from her mother and guru Indira PP Bora (national awardee of Sangeet Natak Akademi). She has played an instrumental role in the research, development and popularisation of the 15th century Indian classical Sattriya dance and music as ‘world music and dance’ while working with traditional mentors and musicians at grass root levels in the Hindu monasteries of Assam. Menaka further stated that a strict discipline should be maintained in order to perform quality dance. “Last year when I visited the city, the ICCR (Indian Council of Cultural Relations) had provided a dance troupe and we took artists from the Barpeta Satra. is not for entertainment. “I am trying to bring the culture of dance through workshop and training programs so that the people understand the reality of dance rather than to perform it in the way they want. Sattriya is not too popular among the people in the other parts of the country, as much as it should have been. People have the wrong concept of the movements

in the dance form, which needs to be rectified. We need to show the actual dance form of Sattriya, which most of the people are not aware of,” added Menaka. She also stated that there is a lack of quality in dance among the people of the city and state. “Students are so involved in various activities, they can’t concentrate on a particular one. The parents need to be conscious and after a certain point of time, they fail to proceed as they concentrate mostly on the competitions rather than the art.” Menaka is the first Assamese artist to be invited to perform a solo Sattriya dance and conduct lectures and seminars at the world renowned Edinburgh Festival and Oxford Literary Festival in the UK. Her performances have received top star ratings in top dance review magazines and journals. She produced, managed and presented the first ever 5 city national British tour of Sattriya dance, Sattriya Dance Series in 2007 where she promoted Sattriya culture in key mainstream British arts venues and museums in London, Leicester, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool. In 2008 Menaka launched

an innovative project entitled ‘Dance in Museum Project’ for interpreting South Asian material culture (Indian textiles, sculptures, musical instruments, paintings, artefacts, Sanskrit and Assamese manuscripts) through site-specific Indian classical dance and Sattriya dance in particular. Talking about the scenario of dance in the city, Menaka said that the government is not taking art and culture seriously and therefore, the culture of the state is not being promoted. She said that art and culture have been taken up as a business and there are some people who are not concerned about the quality. According to her, if this is the scenario, then 20 years down the line the culture of the state will be in danger. “We should try to expose the talents and the artists so that the art and culture could be given a proper platform. In other parts of the country, people follow their culture, which is missing among our people. We also don’t have proper auditoriums to stage a quality performance, we are lacking specialisation which needs to be fulfilled,” said Menaka. juthika.baruah@g-plus.in

Residents remain critical despite of GMDA officials’ affirmation of concluding the project within a month’s period

he ongoing water supply project by GMDA/JICA that has been a matter of dispute, after several areas around the city have been damaged, has raised concern among the residents of Krishna Nagar. The process that has been carried out in the area since the month of June is still under process and 100 meters of the pipes are yet to be installed. Local residents remain critical of the completion of the project with satisfactory results. Krishna Nagar is a locality situated in the Chandmari area on the Assam Engineering Institute Road adjacent to the popular ‘u-turn’ of the Chandmari flyover. While one side of the road houses the quarters of AEI employees, the other has private residences. Like the surrounding areas that are welldeveloped, locals of Krishna Nagar did not have much to complain about either until the inception of the water supply project in the area.

People’s say The pipeline project that started in the area of Krishna Nagar in the month of June is being awaited for completion while the people are having to suffer due to the problems created by the project. Meanwhile, rainfall also played a spoilsport in the brisk conclusion of the process.

Along with the pipeline project due to which the road and drainage system is in a dilapidated condition, people also expressed concern over the lack of a few basic amenities. “Since the road is sloped, the rain water running down the surrounding areas such as Amaya Nagar passes through the particular area. Prior to the pipeline project being initiated, the road and drainage system was in good condition but since its inception in the area, the road condition has not only been hampered but it is also troublesome for locals to commute via the road,” said Labanya Dutta, a local resident. “Rain has also been a problem due to which the project has also been delayed and even after work started in the month of June, the installation of pipeline has not been completed yet. Even after it being carried out for over two months, the installation has not been finished and some parts of the area still remain incomplete. The officials have assured rebuilding the road after the project is complete,” Dutta added. Dipjyoti Lahon, a local resident expressing concern over the condition of the road said, “As seen in other parts of the city and surrounding areas, the project had hampered several roads and they

were not properly restored. Even the speed at which the work is carried out is erratic, and so it cannot be expected that the process is ending anytime soon.” Local residents also pointed out the lack of street lights in the area, which has raised concerns over the security issues. “Over the past few months several incidents of chain snatching has taken place in the area. Let alone the evenings, such incidents has also taken place in broad daylight where women had fallen prey to chain snatchers while visiting the Naamghar. Although,

complaints have been made, but no recovery has been made yet. So in such cases the requirement of streetlights is a priority in such areas”, Lahon added.

Modus Operandi According to GMDA officials, rain has played the spoilsport during the process and the area being close to the water tank that will be constructed atop the Chandmari hill, pipes of larger size have been installed in the area. The installation process generally takes a week to ten

days followed by a process of hydro testing of the installed pipes. “During the process the installed pipes are tested with water pressure for twenty-four hours in order to check for any kind of leakages. Since repeating the same process will be tormenting and time consuming so entire operation is observed in the first step itself. After the installation process, the road will be restored with concrete plaster along with the drainage system that will also be constructed,” an official said. “The installation of pipes have already been concluded following which hydro testing of the pipes will be carried out. While the testing process is expected to be concluded within a week, if rainfall doesn’t hamper the work the road should also be constructed within a month’s time,” the official added. It can be mentioned that the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority has tied up with the central government, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Asian Development Bank for total funding of Rs 2,713 crore for undertaking four water supply projects, which will cover the whole of the city and will provide round the clock water supply by the end of 2016. kalyan.deb@g-plus.in

As HBS’s switch from Congress to BJP was welcomed on August 28th with festive fervour throughout the city by BJP supporters, the Assam Pradesh Congress celebrated the day as “Ullas Divas” (happy day) for ‘getting rid’ of Himanta Biswa Sarma. The switch prior to the elections has raised several questions and many remain critical about the surprising move. G Plus asked a few Guwahatians about their view on the switch.

I would like to ask him where the party was lagging behind. The defaming statements made against Rahul Gandhi will not be tolerated either. It is in HBS’s nature to change parties and Congress will not face any loss due to his move. Earlier, during his AASU days, he got embroiled in a controversy of having connections with ULFA and extortion following which he went to Hiteswar Saikia. Similarly after being embroiled in the Louis Berger scam he has pleaded Modi.

After completing her graduation, Mandakini started working for Verawang and later for Donna Carrie, New York till the year 2012 but since she was only involved with the business part of the fashion industry, she always had the urge to do something more creative. “Although I was associated with the fashion Industry, I was into the business side of it. Meanwhile, I realised that I need to do something more creative and since I had always enjoyed baking and was in love with food, especially desserts, it made me rethink. I quit my job and enrolled in the Institute of Culinary Education (ICE) in New York and went in for pastry and baking arts. I also did an internship with Kate Sullivan, one of the top cake artists in New York and also my inspiration. However, it was not easy to get in touch with her and required a lot of persuasion but finally managed to land the internship in the year 2014,” said Mandakini. Mandakini also went on to pursue another degree i.e. in professional cake decora-

tion under the very famous Toba Garrett. She then decided to move back to Guwahati, her hometown. Moreover, the idea of coming up with something new for the people of the city appealed to her and so the baker shifted back to the city in November 2014 and pursued after her venture. The Banking Ombudsman Scheme, 2006 enables inexpensive, expeditious and transparent resolution of complaints of bank customers relating to certain services rendered by banks. The Banking Ombudsman is an officer of the Reserve Bank of India in the rank of Chief General Manager/General Manager appointed by the Reserve Bank of India to redress customer complaints against certain deficiencies in banking services under the Banking Ombudsman Scheme 2006.

ince February 2013, Anand Prakash has working as the banking ombudsman of northeast region and is based in the Guwahati RBI. Prakash exclusively talks to G Plus and explains about the importance of banking ombudsman scheme for the public.

How many Banking Ombudsmen have been appointed and where are they located? How does Banking Ombudsman function? As of date, 15 Banking Ombudsmen have been appointed with their offices located mostly in the State Capitals. The addresses of the Banking Ombudsman offices have been provided on the RBI website (www.rbi.org.in). The Banking Ombudsman shall receive and consider complaints filed on certain grounds mentioned in the Banking Ombudsman Scheme 2006 and facilitate their satisfaction or settlement by agreement or through conciliation and mediation between the bank concerned and the aggrieved parties or by passing an award (order) in accordance with the Scheme. Banking Ombudsman also considers complaints from Non-Resident Indians having accounts in India in relation to their remittances from abroad, deposits and other bank-related matters.

Which are the States coming under the territorial jurisdiction of Office of Banking Ombudsman, Guwahati? Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura

Which banks are covered under the Banking Ombudsman Scheme, 2006? All scheduled commercial banks, regional rural banks and scheduled primary co- operative banks are covered under the scheme. Financial companies and post offices are not under the scheme.

What sort of disputes can the Banking Ombudsman consider? The Banking Ombudsman can receive and consider complaints such as non-payment or inordinate delay in the payment or collection of cheques/ drafts/bills, non-acceptance without sufficient cause, also of small denomination notes/coins tendered for any purpose, and for charging of commission for this service, non-payment or delay in payment of inward remittances, failure to provide or delay in providing a banking facility (other than loans and advances) promised in writing by a bank or its direct selling agents. Also delays, non-payment of deposit or nonobservance of the Reserve Bank directives, if any, applicable to rate of interest on deposits in any savings/current or other account maintained with a bank, refusal to open/close deposit accounts without any valid reason for refusal, levying of charges without adequate prior notice to the customer, non-adherence by the bank or its subsidiaries to the instructions of Reserve Bank on ATM/ debit card operations or credit card operations, non-disbursement or delay in disbursement of pension, forced closure of deposit accounts without due notice or without sufficient reason, deficiency

in internet banking services, non-adherence to the provisions of Fair Practices Code for lenders as adopted by the banks or Code of Banksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Commitment to Customers issued by BCSBI and adopted by banks etc.

What is the procedure for filing a complaint before the Banking Ombudsman? A complainant can file a complaint with the Banking Ombudsman by writing on a plain paper or file it online (at www.rbi.org.in) or by sending an email to the Banking Ombudsman. There is also a prescribed form for filing a complaint, which is available with all the branches of the banks. The complainant should, however, incorporate all the required information such as his/her name and address, the name and address of the branch or office of the bank against which the complaint is made, facts giving rise to the complaint supported by documents, if any, the nature and extent of the loss caused to the complainant, the relief sought from the Banking Ombudsman. The complaint can be filed by an authorised representative (other than an advocate) of the complainant.

Is there any cost involved in filing complaints with Banking Ombudsman? No. The Banking Ombudsman does not charge any fee for resolving

customersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; complaints.

What will the Banking Ombudsman consider for passing an award? For passing an award, the Banking Ombudsman is guided by the documentary evidence placed before him by the parties, the principles of banking law and practice, directions, instructions and guidelines issued by the Reserve Bank of India and such other factors, which in his opinion are necessary in the interest of justice.

Is there any provision for making appeals under the Scheme against the award/ decisions given by the Banking Ombudsman? Yes, a complainant can file appeal with the Appellate Authority (Deputy Governor, In charge of the Consumer Education & Protection Department in Central Office, RBI) against the Banking Ombudsmenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision given under certain clauses of the scheme.

What are the main grounds of rejection of complaints? The Banking Ombudsman may reject a complaint at any stage if it appears to him that a complaint made to him is not on any of the grounds mentioned in the scheme or demanding compensation in excess of rupees

ten lakhs, demanding compensation in excess of rupees one lakh in case of credit cards operations, requires elaborate examination of documentary/oral evidence and is not pursued by the complainant with reasonable diligence.

In Guwahati the banking ombudsman was established in 1997, so, how many complaints do you receive and from where? What is the awareness level among the public? For the last many years we have been receiving the maximum number of complaints from the State of Assam. Last year the percentage of complaints received from Assam stood at 71%. In our jurisdiction, we received less number of complaints from semiurban and rural areas as compared to the urban areas and metros. Apart from issuing advertisements in the newspapers/magazines regarding the BOS 2006 we have been organising awareness camps/town hall meets in various parts of all the seven states under our jurisdiction. As a result of our awareness campaign, the number of complaints received under the scheme has increased from 528 in the year 2009-10 to 1054 in the year 2014-15. It is now 10.30 am, Mrs Afrin, a wife, a mother, a daughter-in-law and HR executive in an urban busy hospital has already been awake for five hours, having left breakfast for her children and inlaws and taken two buses to reach her office. She is standing with a phone cradled on her shoulder, a patient sitting in front of her desk to clear few doubts, two staffs standing with few questions, , two calls on the hold and a buzzing intercom. On her desk are several forms to be completed and a boss who has just walked out of his office and asked for something to be copied.

ost of us need little introduction to the phenomenon of stress, formally defined as the response to events that threaten or challenge a person. Whether it be a paper or exam deadline, a family problem, or even a cumulative series of small events such a those faced by Mrs Afrin on the job, life is full of circumstances and events, known as stressors, that produce threats to our well-being and hampers our quality of life. Even pleasant events and during happy moments - such as planning or celebrating a party or beginning a sought-after job – can produce stress, although negative events result in greater detrimental consequences than positive ones. More or less all of us face stress in our lives. Some health psychologists believe that daily life actually involves a series of repeated sequences of perceiving a threat arising from the so-called stress and anxiety, considering ways to cope with it, and ultimately adapting to the threat, with greater or lesser success. Although adaptation is often minor and occurs without our being aware of it, in those cases in which the stress is more severe or longer lasting, adaptation requires major effort and may produce physiological and psychological responses that result in different types of health problems. The High cost of Stress. Stress can take its toll in many ways, producing both biological and psychological conse-

quences. Often the most immediate reaction to stress is a biological one. Exposure to stressors induces a rise in certain hormones secreted by the adrenal glands, an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, and changes in how well the skin conducts electrical impulses (Mason, 1975; Selye, 1976). However, continued exposure to stress results in a decline in the body’s overall level of biological functioning due to the constant secretion of the stress-related hormones. Over time, stressful reactions can promote deterioration of body tissues such as blood vessels and the heart. Ultimately, we become more susceptible to disease as our ability to fight off germs is lowered. In addition to the major health difficulties, many of the minor aches and pains may be caused or worsened by stress. These include headache, back ache, indigestion, fatigue, constipation, insomnia, impaired sleeping etc. Furthermore, a whole class of medical problems, known as psychosomatic disorders, “a physical disease that is thought to be caused or made worse, by mental factors” often results from stress. On a psychological level, high levels of stress prevent people from coping with life adequately. Their view of the environment can become clouded, their emotional responses may be so extreme that they are unable to act or react at all. Techniques That Zap Stress, Fast

Relax. You deserve it, it’s good for you, and it takes less time than you think. You don’t need a spa weekend or a retreat. Each of these stress-relieving tips can get you from OMG to om in less than 15 minutes.

Meditate A few minutes of practice per day can help ease anxiety. “Research suggests that daily meditation may alter the brain’s neural pathways, making you more resilient to stress,” says psychologist Robbie Maller Hartman, PhD, a Chicago health and wellness coach. It’s simple. Sit up straight with both feet on the floor. Close your eyes. Focus your attention on reciting -- out loud or silently -- a positive mantra such as “I feel at peace” or “I love myself.” Place one hand on your belly to sync the mantra with your breaths. Let any distracting thoughts float by like clouds.

Breathe Deeply Take a 5-minute break and focus on your breathing. Sit up straight, eyes closed, with a hand on your belly. Slowly inhale through your nose, feeling the breath start in your abdomen and work its way to the top of your head. Reverse the process as you exhale through your mouth. “Deep breathing counters the effects of stress by slowing the heart rate and lowering blood pressure,” psychologist Judith Tutin, PhD, says. She’s a certified life coach in Rome, GA.

Be Present Slow down. “Take 5 minutes and focus on only one behavior with awareness,” Tutin says. Notice how the air feels on your face when you’re walking and how your feet feel hitting the ground. Enjoy the texture and taste of each bite of food. When you spend time in the moment and focus on your senses, you should feel less tense.

Reach Out Your social network is one of your best tools for handling stress.

Talk to others -- preferably face to face, or at least on the phone. Share what’s going on. You can get a fresh perspective while keeping your connection strong.

Tune In to Your Body Mentally scan your body to get a sense of how stress affects it each day. Lie on your back, or sit with your feet on the floor. Start at your toes and work your way up to your scalp, noticing how your body feels. “Simply be aware of places you feel tight or loose without trying to change anything,” Tutin says. For 1 to 2 minutes, imagine each deep breath flowing to that body part. Repeat this process as you move your focus up your body, paying close attention to sensations you feel in each body part.

Decompress Place a warm heat wrap around your neck and shoulders for 10 minutes. Close your eyes and relax your face, neck, upper chest, and back muscles. Remove the wrap, and use a tennis ball or foam roller to massage away tension. “Place the ball between your back and the wall. Lean into the ball, and hold gentle pressure for up to 15 seconds. Then move the ball to another spot, and apply pressure,” says Cathy Benninger, a nurse practitioner and assistant professor at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus.

Laugh Out Loud A good belly laugh doesn’t just lighten the load mentally. It lowers cortisol, your body’s stress hormone, and boosts brain chemicals called endorphins, which help your mood. Lighten up by tuning in to your favorite sitcom or video, reading the comics, or chatting with someone who makes you smile.

Crank Up the Tunes Research shows that listening to soothing music can lower blood pressure, heart rate, and anxiety. “Create a playlist of songs or nature sounds (the ocean, a bubbling brook, birds chirping), and allow your mind to focus on the different melodies, instruments, or singers in the piece,” Benninger says. You also can blow off steam by rocking out to more upbeat tunes -- or singing at the top of your lungs!

Get Moving You don’t have to run in order to get a runner’s high. All forms of exercise, including yoga and walking, can ease depression and anxiety by helping the brain release feel-good chemicals and by giving your body a chance to practice dealing with stress. You can go for a quick walk around the block, take the stairs up and down a few flights, or do some stretching exercises like head rolls and shoulder shrugs.

Be Grateful Keep a gratitude journal or several (one by your bed, one in your purse, and one at work) to help you remember all the things that are good in your life. “Being grateful for your blessings cancels out negative thoughts and worries,” says Joni Emmerling, a wellness coach in Greenville, NC. Use these journals to savor good experiences like a child’s smile, a sunshine-filled day, and good health. Don’t forget to celebrate accomplishments like mastering a new task at work or a new hobby. When you start feeling stressed, spend a few minutes looking through your notes to remind yourself what really matters.

f you think nobody loves you, know for sure that you are loved. The earth loves you; that’s why it is holding you upright. The love of the earth is its gravitational force. Someone’s company cannot fill your loneliness. Even if it does, it is very short-lived. You can still feel lonely in spite of being in company. In the real sense, loneliness can only be filled by being alone. If you could be comfortable being alone for some time, then you will not feel lonely. When you don’t feel lonely, you can spread joy to people around you. People run after parties and celebrations, but for the one who does not run after them, parties and celebrations follow him wherever he or she goes. If you run after parties, loneliness comes to you and if you are in the solitude of the Self, parties surround you. If you enjoy being with your Self, you will not be a boring personality. If you are lonely, then you can be boring to others. And that will make you lonelier! And if your own company bores you, how much more boring must you be to someone else? Do you think there was nobody to give them company? There were hundreds waiting to take care of them and all they did was to be useful to people around them. When you make service your sole purpose in life, it eliminates fear, brings focus in your mind, purposefulness in action, and long-term joy. Every time you are unhappy, miserable or lonely, you are just coming in touch with your own boundaries. Boundary is the real cause of your disturbance as it brings limitation. You are peaceful and happy till you come in contact with your boundaries. The moment you come in contact with it, then the mind goes on a trip and you move out of your centre. At that moment you can just be grateful and pray for peace. That very moment, you will start smiling and however hopeless the situation is, you will walk through it.

fter debacles such as Humshakals and Happy Ending last year, it’s possible Saif Ali Khan will now have a box-office hit with Thursday’s release, Phantom. Phantom refers to a Rambo-style operation conceived by the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), the primary foreign intelligence agency in India, which is struggling to bring the perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks to justice but without being blamed for it. For this reason Daniyal Shaikh (Khan), a reclusive dishonoured Indian army man is recruited. Abandoned by his parents, and not just by friends and the army, Shaikh wants to simply stop existing. But when

ames Bond, Sherlock Holmes and even Bertie Wooster have all made dramatic returns to the page with contemporary authors such as William Boyd and Sebastian Faulks resurrecting them for new adventures. After Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy sold more than 80 million copies it was inevitable that its protagonists – investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist and leather-clad punk hacker Lisbeth Salander – would return, and the author’s death in 2004 would prove little impediment. The books that started with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and

became a global phenomenon now have a fourth installment – The Girl in the Spider’s Web – written by Swedish journalist David Lagercrantz. The book has been sanctioned by the author’s father and brother and fans of the original trilogy need not fear. Its careful handling of the characters and plotting feel hugely deferential to Larsson’s originals – perhaps too much so. We find Blomkvist facing brickbats from rival journalists criticising him that he has lost his edge and laughing at him as he dismisses online journalism. He feels, like the James Bond of Skyfall, a man out of

the opportunity to “redeem” himself comes along in the form of Phantom, he accepts it. What follows is intriguing political plotting from both sides of the border that concludes with a thrilling end. Yes, some may argue that due to its extensive international shoot, the film was “just a holiday for the cast and crew”, but the events depicted in the film force that. But if Bryce Dallas Howard running from dinosaurs in high heels in the grass didn’t stop Jurassic World from being one of the biggest films of the year, I guess we can allow our Kaif to dodge bullets with her gorgeous hair flying all over the place. Even though the protagonists fall in love, the good thing about the film is that it avoids degenerating into a romance with unnecessary displays of love and meaningless songs — though Arijit Singh’s Saware at the end of the film is a good listen. Even the one wedding song was made an essential part of the mission. The action and thrills stay right through to the end.

pon its initial release in 2006, few games could match the pure visual grandeur of Gears of War, and the cover-based shooting mechanics were similarly novel. Cut to 2015, and the remake may not have the graphical chops to compete with the very best in the business, but The Coalition’s loving recraft is certainly pretty enough to feel at home on Xbox One. A head-totoe visual and audio overhaul is as comprehensive as anyone could hope for. Gameplay sees a more minor adjustment, but franchise fans on console should also be attracted to the

presence of PC and DLC content that never before made its way to Xbox. Multiplayer is chock full of maps and offers lots of great mode options, but your enjoyment will be tempered by how much you liked the original. Here is a quick starter’s guide to making that party a success You have to first decide on a gas or a charcoal barbecue grill. There are pros and cons for both. Charcoal grills are inexpensive, but a little more butch and complicated to clean up afterwards. Gas burners are more expensive but however, within a limited spacing a Gas based grill would be a better investment. Plus with Gas based grills, you can skip the 20 minute pre heating and com-

plicated cleanup process afterwards. Don’t light your charcoal with lighter fluid. It seems like a quick fix, but it can make your food taste “chemical.” Let the gas grill heat up for at least 10 minutes, and your charcoal grill for at least 20. A good domestic grill can be purchased within Rs. 3000, but if you’re looking for a good size and get all your meat together, you will have to shell out about Rs. 6000 and maybe more. Keep a brass wire ready to scrape the charred goo and gunk off of the

Kun?’ is a new Assamese suspense thriller by a Guwahati based sociocultural group called Youthzkorner, which is a student’s group. The film is based on a new concept and they believe that it will bring a lot of change in Assamese film industry. The story and direction of the film has been done by Anuprash Das, and produced by Upamanyoo Das and Ronney. The notable thing about this movie is that each and everyone in this film are amateurs with zero experience in this field and yet they’ve taken on

this endeavor to give promote talented youth through this film. The venture has a very small budget and the equipments like slider, lights and shoulder grids have been made using available materials locally, by themselves. The key roles in the film ‘KUN?’ have been played by Kamal Lochan, Nilaksi Deka, Babul Koch, Himakshi Kalita, Nishi, Rwittick Sharma Tamuli, Sangeeta, Sazzad, Bhaskar etc. The film’s dialogues have been written by Kamal

he Nakkata Pukhuri near the Panbazar area has been in existence during Ahom rule. Lesser known fact of the lake is that it is also known as Nak phuta Pukhuri. However, with passing time and lack of initiatives from the authorities the heritage site is losing

its embellishment. The surroundings of the lake are being used as parking space and due to a restaurant operating near the lake which is one of the prior reason of polluting the lake. The lake is also the only source of reservoir during any kind of fire emergencies.

Modelling is very important to me and so is my education. I hope to achieve success in both these fields.
