he pitiable condition of the children travelling to their schools everyday by buses provided by their respective school authorities can be well known from the number of buses found violating the Supreme Court directives. During routine inspection conducted by the district transport office (DTO), Kamrup (M), it has come to the fore that most of the school buses plying in the city do not comply with the standard safety guidelines. Out of 524 school buses inspected by the transport officials, fitness certificate of 403 school buses have been suspended. During the inspection which started in the month of October last year, the transport officials visited 84 private schools in the city. “The recent inspection of the school buses has revealed that most of the school buses are f louting the Supreme Court directive on school bus. Till the first week of January this year, we have visited 84 private schools in the city and suspended fitness certificate of 403 school buses,” an official at district transport office, Kamrup (M) told G Plus. According to the Supreme Court guidelines, every school bus has to be equipped with minimum one emergency exit on right side of the bus. “But during our inspection, we have found that apart from a very few buses, not other buses have followed this rule,” official at DTO, Kamrup (M) told. Mentioning other SC norms violated by the school buses, the Official of DTO, Kamrup (M) told that there is no provision of seat belts attached to the seats of buses for both the students and the driver. Besides, the overall condition of the cleanliness of most of the school buses is not good and most of the buses do not have any fires aid box or fire extinguishers. “According to the SC norms, the school buses should have seating capacity of not more than 35 students. But, most of the buses are carrying students above the permitted limit. Moreover, we have to face a lot of trouble while inspecting the buses on road. They are always in a hurry and give various excuses whenever we stop the buses to check whether the driver is under the inf luence of alcohol or other safety norms. Therefore, we have to visit each and every school to inspect the condition of the school buses,” official at DTO, Kamrup

An important revelation which came out during the recent inspection was that authorities of some of the schools did not have any knowledge about the buses running using their school names.

(M) added. Another important revelation which came out during the recent inspection was that authorities of some of the schools did not have any knowledge about the buses running using their school names. “Renowned schools like Kendriya Vidyalaya do not have any school buses, which we came to know only after our inspection, but there are lot of buses plying on the road bearing the name of Kendriya Vidyalaya. Some of those buses do not even bear the name of the school, name and contact number of the owner on the body of the bus

as per the mandate of the SC, forget about other safety norms to be used by the school buses. They just paint the body of the buses with yellow colour which is the permitted colour of the school buses,” stated an official of DTO, Kamrup (M). When contacted, authorities of the Kendriya Vidyalaya, Khanapara, when inquired about the inspection report of the DTO, Kamrup (M), the principal (in charge), I S Buragohain told, “We do not have any school bus of our own and the parents are looking after the vehicles used to transport their children though, it is a responsibility

of the school authority to look after the safety of the students. Therefore, we have circulated the safety guidelines to the bus owners which carry our children and asked them to remove the name of our school from the buses.” She also added, “All the decisions of all the Kendriya Vidyalayas are taken by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and we implement them accordingly in the schools. If the KVS decide to run school buses on its own, then we will implement the decision.” mrinmoyee.hazarika@g-plus.in

City spas under scanner for immoral activities RAHUL CHANDA

N

ews about massage parlours and beauty spas getting raided by police in metro cities like Kolkata, Mumbai etc and girls being rescued from prostitution rackets therein have been making headlines across the country intermitently. In recent years, the trend of beauty spas and body massage parlours became quite popular in Guwahati too, and a recent raid conducted by the police at some Thai spa parlours has now raised serious questions about the legal aspects of such relaxing points. Whenever such raids take place, one cannot help but wonder whether there are any illegal business running in city spas, the reason for such police raids, the treatment of employees by the management, the probable involvement in any illegal business or it’s just a mindset.

The raid A joint team of city police crime branch and Bhangaghar police conducted a series of verification drives in spas, mostly located on GS Road last week. DCP (Crime) Swapnanil Deka said, “We had an input that some foreigners are working in some Thai spas violating visa norms, so we raided the spas to verify the visas and other documents. On the first raid in a Thai spa we found five Thai nationals working on tourist visas, and similarly in another raid in another spa we found four Thai nationals working on tourist visas. We deported the foreign nationals and filed a case against the first spa we visited. During our raid we found some used and unused contraceptives as well which made us doubt that there are some illegal business running in the spa.” According to the Bhangaghar police, a caseof illegal trafficking has been registered against Glam Thai Spa and Salon (case number -09/15 under section 370 (A)(2) IPC R/W section 3/4/5/7 IT (P) Act). The owner of the spa and the security in-charge of the spa were arrested and send to judicial custody. A senior police official said that foreign nationals coming on tourist visas (up to six month) need not report to the police, so sometimes it is difficult to keep their track. Sources in the police said that there might be some more foreign nationals either overstaying in the state or staying on in violation of visa norms. So, it cannot be ruled out that more such foreign girls being engaged in business establishments. After this recent raid and the arrest of two in relation to illegal trafficking and immoral activities, city spas are under scanner for such illegal business and different spa owners and managers are claiming to not be involved in such business.

The claim The Thai Spa manager Nepal Panda said, “People invest a lot of money to set up such business and any illegal activities, if detected can ruin the entire establishment. Immoral activities can only happen if the management is not strict and the therapists

are not guided well and exploited.” He further said that a person comes to a spa when he is very tired and it is the duty of the therapist to make sure that the muscle get energised, body is nicely stretched, blood get circulated and the mind is totally refreshed. According to him, the therapists working in The Thai Spa are well trained and are mostly from Mizoram and Gangtok. Enquiring that as it is a Thai Spa, they do not have therapists from Thailand, he said, “We had two Thai nationals working as therapists but they left as soon as they heard about the recent raid which took place in some city spas.” He further clarified that the nationals working in his spa had proper working visas and were verified before they joined. But, the question remains why did they leave if they had proper working visas. Another city spa manager said, “Some incidents which came into light recently where people were involved in immoral activities should be stopped. Only because of such spas, the entire spa business is looked at negatively which is not correct. There are spas which are decently serving its customers and are brand names in the industry. Such illegal business should be thoroughly checked and if detected the culprits should be strictly dealt with.”

The blame A regular city based spa visitor said, “I have been to spas where I was offered such services but very discreetly of course. There are different kinds of intimate services which can be availed in the city but definitely just a handful of them are involved in such activities.” Similarly, a highly placed source in the police said that it is very difficult to prove immoral activities and the spa which was sealed recently made the mistake of not removing the contraceptives during the raid. If the spas are involved in such business and if the police does not receive any inputs or complaint about such activities, it is tough for them to always act against such spas. It is possible if the public helps the police by providing information. The Thai Spa manager said that they make sure that when a customer is getting body massage, the doors are not closed. The customers are also not entertained if they are drunk or intoxicated. The therapists have strict instructions of leaving the room if any customer misbehaves and even the customers can complain if any therapist misbehaves. It is true that the management is entirely responsible for such illegal activities and to avoid

such things the management should make sure that the employees are not exploited. Average salary of a therapist is around Rs 15,000 per month, but it is not alwys easy to survive on that amount in a city like Guwahati. There are other options of earning decently without indulging in immoral activities, but if the management is forcing people to such business then it is a different question. But, till then, spas will be under the scanner of the police and activists working in favour of women rights. rahul.chanda@g-plus.in

lthough the habit of registering someone’s birth or death officially, one of the most important exercises required to be done in order to maintain records of the people born and dead every year is less among the public, yet the practice is increasing at a slow pace over the years. This could be noticed from the rate of birth and death registration registered in the office of the joint director of health services, Kamrup (M) in the last four years. The office has recorded 10 per cent increase in the registration of birth in the last four years, starting from 2011 to 2014. In the year 2011, altogether 19,952 numbers of birth cases had been registered in different centres of the city. After a gap of three years, the number has been increased to 22,000, registering a 10 per cent growth. On the other hand, a total number of 19,041 and 16,072 birth cases have been registered in the year 2013 and 2014 respectively in the city. Meanwhile, the city has witnessed registration of 4,016 numbers of death cases in the year 2011. The number has been increased to 5740 in the year 2014, registering an increase of around 43 per cent. Altogether 3,531 and 4,755 death cases have been registered in the year 2012 and 2013 respectively in the city. “Though, we have not achieved 100 per cent coverage in terms of registration of birth and death in the

Besides, the Right to Public Service Act has made it mandatory to issue a birth or death registration certificate within a period of 10 days (from the date of the application) time to the applicant,” Saikia told. Highlighting the complicacies while registering a death, he stated, “There are various components under which a death case has been registered. If the cause of a death is unnatural (accident or suicide etc) or where the body of the deceased has not been found, it creates trouble for us to detect the cause of death. It also delays the registration process.” The joint director of district health department has also revealed that registration of birth cases is less complicated than death registration. “There are complicacies in the process of birth registration process as well, but it is less complicated compared to some cases of registration of death,” Ganesh Saikia told. In this regard, he also mentioned, “Most of the time, people tend to ignore registering a birth or a death case. They only do it whenever they need to show the proof of birth and death in cases of claiming insurance or getting admission in an institution etc. But, now people have become more conscious and come forward to register a birth or death instantly.” mrinmoyee.hazarika@g-plus.in

54 cases related to crime

against children registered in 2014

Mrinmoyee Hazarika

A

t a time when protection of the child and child rights has become a major challenge to the law enforcing agencies, the state of Assam has registered as many as 54 cases related to the crime committed against children in the year 2014. The newly published annual report (fifth annual report, 2014) of Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has revealed that last year a total number of 54 cases related to crime against children have been registered in Assam. Out of those cases, 10 cases were related to the children in need of care and protection, five were related to child right violation, nine were related to sexual abuse, seven were on child trafficking, 16 cases were related to right to education, two were related to child abuse, two were on child marriage and three cases were related to child labour. On the other hand, the report also says that out of the 54 cases registered last year, a total number of 38 cases have been disposed. Moreover, seven such cases are still pending and nine cases remain sub-judice. The poor rate of conviction in cases of crime committed against children has also revealed the pitiable condition of the justice delivery system of the country for needy persons. The recently published annual report (fifth annual report, 2014) of Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has revealed that a total number of 564 cases of crime have been reported to be committed against children between the years 2011-July 2013 but conviction has happened only in two cases. conviction rate is 4.4 per cent only. “There is lack of special courts to look after cases related to crimes against children. The district and session courts in Assam have been designated as special courts for trial of cases related to children which is not sufficient to address the grave issue of crime against children. We do not have any infrastructure to address the issue, therefore, the rate of conviction in cases related to the children is very low,” said Runumi Gogoi, Chairperson, Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) on the sideline of a two day consultation on ending violence against children. In this regard, the newly appointed police commissioner of Guwahati, Jyotirmoy Chakrabarti told G Plus, “Though I have not seen the report (fifth annual report, 2014 of ASCPCR) yet, I am aware that the rate of conviction in cases related to crime against children is low in

The annual report of ASCPCR also stated that out of 624 persons arrested for crime committed against children, 76 were released before trial, 236 were charge sheeted and 312 were under investigation within the same period. the city. Police is only a part in the criminal justice delivery system. There is court to prosecute the criminals. But, of course in order to expedite the system, we, the police officials, have to be more aware and sensitised.” Emphasising the need of bringing about a sensitive approach towards dealing with both the accused and the convicted persons, Chakrabarti also stated, “The police have to be sensitive while dealing with both the

accused and the convicted persons, specially when the person is minor. For long, the law has been with the accused persons and now it has started working with the victims as well. Because, while delivering justice, hearing both sides of the incident is important.” The annual report of ASCPCR also stated that out of 624 persons arrested for crime committed against children, 76 were released before trial, 236 were charge sheeted and

312 were under investigation within the same period. Besides, out of the 1,716 reported cases of rape, five victims were within 10 years of age, 151 between 10-14 years and 177 within 14-18 years of age. “The state average for overall infrastructure availability rate is 60.56 per cent. It is highest in Sibsagar (71.92 per cent) and lowest in Hailakandi (43.18 per cent). Only 532 schools (0.86 per cent) comply with all norms for building under RTE. In the state, only 80.87 per cent schools have drinking water facility, only 76.23 per cent schools have separate toilet for girls and 25.6 per cent have boundary walls,” the newly published ASCPCR reveals. It also mentions that the ASCPCR had received the highest number of complaints (15) related to children from the district of Kamrup (M), followed by BTAD (four) in the year of 2014.

Magisterial probe ordered into custodial death T

he Kamrup (metro) district administration today ordered an magistrate level probe into the incident of alleged custodial death of one Abu Taleb, a murder accused, who died at the Noonmati police station lock up on Tuesday. He, 30, was arrested by city police on Sunday and then remanded to 10 days police custody before he died mysteriously. “Executive magistrate Mukul Kathar will conduct the probe and submit a detailed report within 15 days,” said the administration order. The Assam Human Rights’ Commission (AHRC), too has taken a sou-moto cognizance and ordered a ‘magistrate level’ enquiry into the incident earlier. Following the death, city police claimed that Taleb complained to the police of an abdominal pain on Tuesday morning. “He was taken to Guwahati Medical College Hos-

pital where he was declared dead. The inquest was done as per guidelines of National Human Rights Commission on such deaths,” said Guwahati central zone deputy commissioner of police, Amitabha Sinha. However, hospital sources said that they have found injury marks on Taleb’s back. “There were bruises and blood stains on his body when brought to hospital,” a hospital official said. Police said that Taleb and his associates killed the driver of a truck and then ran away with the truck and its goods on January 16. Taleb who hailed from Dolgaon Kharpuri chapori in Darrang district was arrested from Sixmile area on charges of kidnapping, vehicle lifting and murder. The deceased’s family alleged that Taleb died due to police atrocity during the interrogation. (eom)

The court asked the companies to pay the amount within 45 days. As per the complaint, Dutta owned a SBI credit card which he used from September 2006 to December 2006. With no further use of the credit card, Dutta then returned it to SBI card and payment services ltd. After receiving the policy, Dutta objected and sent a letter for cancellation of the policy in December 2006. Then on behalf of Dutta, Consumers’ Legal Protection Forum (CLPF) filed a case before the district consumer disputes redressal forum, Kamrup in July, 2010 against the SBI

USGRAVIKA

providing unique solutions for economic growth

KALYAN DEB

W

hile many of us often feel disheartened and outraged at the dismal condition of the underprivileged section of our society and blame the state machinary for their sufferings, others take it upon themselves to emerge as pathfinders to guide this section towards self-reliance. One such organisation is the Uma Sarma Graamya Vikash Kendra (USGRAVIKA). The brain child of its C.E.O Putul Sarma, Uma Sarma Graamya Vikash Kendra (USGRAVIKA) is named after his father Uma Sarma, as the inspiration of providing a platform for the development and uplifting of the underprivileged is what Putul Sarma received from his father. It also took the support of few like-minded people to initiate the different developmental programmes for the underprivileged section of the society. It was on 13th of September, 1995 when USGRAVIKA finally came to existence after an extensive survey that revealed that a large number of population were not able to fulfill their needs as they neither had fixed capital to start I.G. (Income Generation) activities. The same resulted in the innovation of and proving asset based microfinance with the package of financial and social security to the unemployed and render them a stake to start I.G. activities on their own.

The Fish Cart

USGRAVIKA has its own manufacturing unit to develop and manufacture the designs. The project concept being named ‘Employment on Wheel’, which also roofed the project, have financed 400 cycle rickshaws (on road) and 2,500 cycle rickshaws have already been delivered after the recovery of cost.

The Functioning Uma Sarma Gramya Vikash Kendra, which is working in the field of generating of alternative employment for the thousands of underpriviledged people, carried out its own research to obtain a required and valuable strategy for the implementation of the programme of providing employment. Grounding the concept of ‘Employment on wheel’, USGRAVIKA started the first innovative idea to start on-wheel asset based micro finance initially proving two different options for the unemployed. The cycle rickshaws and Momo vans being the two different options provided to the beneficiaries of said section of society helped aid them to raise their own income and relieve them from the daily hardship of financial hardship. “There is a large numbers of educated and uneducated youths, who, due to lack of capital are not being able to start any kind of business. Moreover, the target group could not rent out space in prime business location as it demands more

Brief history about Uma Sarma: Spending most part of his life as a Lower Primary school teacher from the year 1951 to 1982, Uma Sarma was born in the district of Nalbari. He used to spend the early mornings in the farm and the rest of the day among students. Uma Sarma also spent his adolescence as a freedom fighter participating in the Quit India Movement alongside Lokopriyo Gopinath Bordoloi and Nabin Bordoloi at the age of 14 in the year 1931. For this he was denied admission in a Christian missionary school in Kochbihar. Lesser known fact about Uma Sarma is that he was also awarded with the Srestha Krishak award by the state government for introducing the cross-breeding of cows.

capital as advance and rent. So, as the business will be on wheels, the vendors will be able to sell at different markets at different point of sales. Even in crowded situation, it will be easier for a vendor to move his van”, asserted Putul Sarma, C.E.O, USGRAVIKA. “With the option of the two categories, we have started to finance cycle rickshaw ‘Uma Rath’ where one can generate good income by giving service to passengers and the other option being the tricycle cart, which are named depending on the commodity of sale like ‘Momo van’ for selling momos or the newly introduced ‘Fish cart’ for selling fish. People of this category can provide commodities on desired locations, doorsteps or other marketable locations”, Sarma added.

The current trend of door-todoor selling of fish in the city and in several other places is unhygienic and catches everyone’s eye. The vendors apply a very outdated fish carrying process in a large aluminium pot, but fish consumers have no way but accept the way they are supplied with the commodity. However, USGRAVIKA’s latest innovation in collaboration with National Institute of Designing introduced a hygienic fish cart that has many provisions to provide fresh fish to customers. The fish cart has eight chambers, six of which are meant for keeping fish in water in order to keep them live longer, while the other two are meant to keep fish waste such as scales and elementary canals. “The entire idea of the project is that of designing an innovative and user friendly fish carrying cart, which also creates avenues of employment and also develops a vehicle service system for the present fish vendors in which they would be able to carry living fish from the source to the sink and will be able to cater the need of the people as per their interest and desire at their doorsteps”, said Sarma. “Since the scope of the project is too large, hence it will be a benefit for the government fishery department and as well as the NGO if they can tie up and work in a much broader perspective”, Sarma added. The cycle rickshaws are provided to the beneficiaries on the deposit of up front amount of Rs 6,700 and Rs1000 per month until the recovery of Rs 16,700. USGRAVIKA has also financed 55 momo vans to the unemployed beneficiaries who now live with dignity. The NGO is also looking forward to come up with new ideas and are also consulting with the NID on vegetable vending shop, on-wheel pan shop with several other projects still in pipeline and expected to be launched in the near future.

connecting road from the Guwahati Club area to B.Borooah road, Hedayetpur has been deprived of the basic requirements of constructed road and proper drainage system, which results in flood and several other inconveniences for the people living in the area. Even after over a year of the GMC elections and amount of funds sanctioned to each ward for development purpose, several roads remain completely neglected by the authorities. The P.D.Chaliha road in Hedayetpur that connects B.Boorah Road from Lakkhi Service, although partly developed, a major part of the area still suffer the inconveniences caused due to poor road and drainage system. The area under the bridge also is choked with waste dumped by the residents of the area that has turned the place into a dumping ground overwhelming the area with stink from the unattended garbage for the passersby. “The area has been in this condition for the past 2 to 3 years. Though some part of the road has been recently developed, the road that connects the B.Borooah Road has been turned a blind eye to. Even after several applications been forwarded to the GMC and also MLA Robin Bordoloi, no initiative has been taken yet for the construction of the road and the drainage system”, asserted Akkas Ali, a resident of P.D.Chaliha Road, Hedyatpur. “Drainage is also a major problem in the particular area. Though there

were drains built on each side of the road and also an underground drain through the middle of the road, with passing time both the drains got filled with the soil eroded from the road due to flood and the one in the middle of the road is also probably filled because the gaps within the road meant for the logged water to pass by has been blocked. The water that runs down the Nabagraha hill clears off via this road to the drain that is connected to the Borchala Beel and since the road bed is at a lower level and the absence of proper drainage system, it keeps the water from clearing off and remain logged for hours that raises to a height of almost 3ft. It also makes it impossible for the vehicles of those who visit the NCP office, to be parked on the road side”, Ali added. Garbage being a major problem of the area, people complain of irregularity in the door-to-door garbage collection process. “GMC officials do not visit regularly to collect the garbage from the homes, thus many of the residence dispose the garbage under the bridge. It is also the responsibility of GMC to clear off stacked garbage and once the area is properly cleaned, even the people will hesitate to dump any kind of garbage. Rather, the authority personnel only visit when the condition gets worse”, asserted Eliza Begum. Beside the P.D.Chaliha Road, the entrance of the road through Guwahati Club is also damaged, creating inconveniences for the vehicles that has to travel through the area.

Problems Poor road condition, drainage system, flood, garbage bin Says the Area Sabha Member Talking to GPlus, area sabha member Satyan Doloi mentioned about the development measures taken by the authorities and the drawbacks that are keeping the area from development. “The drain behind the P.D.Chaliha Road is one of the major sources for the flood water to pass by and since the water that runs down the Nabagraha Hill clears off through this area, so unless the drain is cleaned on a regular basis, the same will always remain a problem. Recently, the cleaning process was carried out but unless one remains present, the GMC labourers are not sincere enough with their job. The working hours meant for the labourers is from 7am to 1pm and during that period the labourers do not carry out with their job sincerely. Also, some of the residents of the area lack in civic sense. Since some of the buildings in the area are under construction, the material are unloaded beside the street itself and remain there for days, which also create inconvenience for the people”, asserted Satyan Doloi. “Moreover some of the houses on the road are wrongly constructed. As a passerby can see, some of the houses stand on the sidewalk

of the road itself and most of which do not have septic tanks of their own and the drains being right behind their houses, the waste is directly disposed on the drain itself. On several occasions, the labourers have complained and refused to clean the drain after finding out the condition”, Doloi added. Satyan Doloi, who is also the general secretary of Safe Guwahati Clean Guwahati, regarding the development of the road mentioned, “Although, proposal for the development of the remaining part of the road has been forwarded, the lack of support from the GMC is also a major drawback. Lack of interactions through mass meeting among the councilors and the area sabha members is also one of the reasons

that stand as drawbacks of any particular area. In recent past, an amount of Rs 30 lakh was sanctioned to each of the ward, though the amount was equally divided and entirely used for development purpose but not all the areas can be covered through this amount.” “Recently, the M.L.B.Road, Rajbari Road and most part of the P.D.Chaliha Road has been constructed and the required measures will be initiated. For garbage collection a cart has also been built with the support of the councilor. Also the people have to be co-operative and more aware regarding the dumping of garbage and maintaining cleanliness in the area”, Doloi added. rahul.chanda@g-plus.in

It’s satisfying that people have started showing interest in adventure sports after our success Tarun Saikia

Tarun Saikia had to undergo tremendous hardship before he could achieve the dream of his life to scale the world’s highest peak– Mount Everest in 2013, becoming the first ever Assamese to do so. In an interview the champion mountaineer shares his experience with G Plus. ADITYA GOGOI

How is your life after achieving the ‘dream’ in reality? I always try to be as simple as possible but life has changed to a great extent. I have become busier than the earlier. People have started to recognize me but what is more satisfying is that people in general have started showing interest in adventure sports and mountaineering after our success in 2013. Now various schools and institutes invite me to train them in adventure sports. So, it’s a different life what it used to be before 2013. I’m glad to be a part of the process to popularise the adventure sports in the region.

How was the feeling when you reached the top? It was amazing as I realized that I was the first person from my state to reach the top. I was so happy and proud to pose with our traditional ‘Gamocha’ at the top. The hard work which I put really paid off. I will cherish the moment for the rest of my life.

How long did it take to reach the top?

It was 72-day trip altogether. From the base camp we were on the mountain for 54 days. There are four camps altogether on the route. It took almost nine hours to reach the top from the summit camp.

Tell us a bit about your preparations.

It was pretty tough. We had to follow certain heavy schedules. Besides the technical stuff, we had to give special attention to fitness. Manish (the other mountaineer from Assam who scaled the peak) and I used to tie 15 kg bags on our back and

In fact the government has been very helpful. The expedition was sponsored by the North East Council (NEC). The NEC gave us Rs 2.7 crore though we needed Rs 3 crore. The rest were managed by the members of the team. I’m also thankful to all my well-wishers and friends for helping me in this regard. we walked on a hill at Bonda in the outskirts of the city every day besides rigorous workouts for seven to eight hours. We also went to Tawang for meditation and yoga besides doing night march on snow covered areas. Diet also played an important role during the preparation.

What help did you receive from the government? In fact the government has been very helpful. The expedition was sponsored by the North East Council (NEC). The NEC gave us Rs 2.7 crore though we needed Rs 3 crore. The rest were managed by the members of the team. I’m also thankful to all my wellwishers and friends for helping me in this regard. It’s difficult for people like me who are financially not very sound to go for such expedition. The state government also rewarded us after the successful completion of the expedition.

Do you think the mountaineering sport is a bit underrated? Yes. It’s a different kind of sports to have spectators or followers unlike other sports. This sport does not have rivals or opponents as such. We all compete against ourselves. So, it’s

obvious that there not much craze among the people.

that the schools and institutes have realized the importance of adventure sports.

What are the possibilities of adventure sports in Assam?

What new activities are coming up?

There are plenty of potentialities in adventure sports in the northeastern region. It can also add new avenues for the promotion of tourism like the states of Himachal and Sikkim have done. It’s a good sign

ssam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s major reshuffle in his three and half-year old ministry for the first time introducing some new faces and keeping some old ones have raised many an eyebrow, with just about a year before the state goes for fresh polls. The performance of the government has always been questioned by political observers and the general public and with the new ministers of council being inducted only about for one year, the major question that arises is how the government will perform. Although Gogoi had claimed that performance was the only criteria for the reshuffle, political pundits were left scratching their heads about the exact strategy behind inducting new faces just a year before major elections.

couple and their son lost their lives in a road accident at Narengi on Wednesday evening. The deceased were travelling on a motor bike when they were hit by a truck at Narengi Tinali. “The family was coming from Panikhaiti towards Noonmati while the truck was coming from Sixmile side to BG Yard. The truck has been seized by the police but the driver ran away from the scene.” Deputy Commissioner of police, traffic, P.J. Goswami said.

The chosen ones

Eight new members—Khumtai legislator Bismita Gogoi, Dholai MLA Girindra Mallick, Abhayapuri South legislator Chandan Kr Sarkar, Barkhetry MLA Dr Bhumidhar Barman, Dhemaji MLA Sumitra Doley Patir, Tingkhong MLA Atuwa Munda, Sonari legislator Sarat Borkataky and Chenga legislator Sukur Ali Ahmed are inducted as ministers. Besides, six ministers of the previous ministry, Ajanta Neog, Rockybul Hussain, Khor Singh Engti, Nazrul Islam, Ajit Singh and Basanta Das were retained in the ministry. Gogoi might be trying his best with the high command to come up with strategies to retain his chair post 2016, and this reshuffle may be a part of the game plan. For the time being the CM is the winner as Himanta Biswa Sarma and gang have been thoroughly routed by the new ministry formation.

The performance

NE Focus Executive Editor Bhupendra Nath Bhattacharyya said, “Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi after three years of hesitation, reconstituted his ministry and the way he reconstituted it clarifies that he has inducted ministers with his political aim only. In 2016 there may be a change in the functioning of the government and the CM may be calculating equations around his son, so, he inducted ministers who do not have any future. Whoever is inducted will only work for their son, daughter and close ones. So many MLAs in their old age found a berth in this ministry whereas across the world, there is a clamour for the

school students and shared information about the educational programmes ongoing in Canada. This visit was an initiative organized under the Canadian Government’s Edu-Canada initiative. The delegates especially briefed the students about the ongoing undergraduate courses. “The students interacted with the representatives and were briefed on the education opportunities, requirements and the admission process in Canada”, school official said.

emergence of young leaders. I am apprehensive whether Gogoi will ever succeed and people who had aspirations that the new ministry will do something for development within this one year already had their hopes dashed because of the way Gogoi reconstituted his ministry. So many inducted ministers have a lot of allegation against them. The ministers who are re inducted are also popular for their failure in their respective departments. This ministry is formed not for the people of Assam but only to safeguard his political interest.” He further added that Sarat Borkotoky was earlier also an education minister and at that time there was a huge controversy in teachers’ appointment. Bhumidhar Burman was also earlier a minister but he was never a successful minister. Chandan Sarkar found a berth in the ministry after 24 years as he was first elected in the Assam assembly in 1991, but he too always had allegations against him. Atuwa Munda was parliamentary secretary for home affairs before and during his tenure, a lot of violence took place in Assam. A highly placed source in the Congress party said, “In the newly inducted ministers, Dr Nazrul Islam is the oldest minister and known as the most corrupt one in the Gogoi government. Islam never performed well during all his tenure and has just eaten up money meant for

development.” The source also said that Dr Bhumidhar Burman and Sarat Borkotoky are very old who cannot even recognise people because of their age and it is confirmed that they will not do anything for the development of the state. According to the source Rockybul Hussain was inducted again just because he is the man behind the making of Gaurav Gogoi as Lok Sabha MP. Hussain worked hard to make junior Gogoi a parliamentarian. Hussain was always a corrupt minister. Chandan Sarkar is a well known coal mafia and can only increase illegal business in the state. Similarly, Khor Singh Engti has never worked previously and will not work now too. With ISL and national youth fest held in Assam, Ajit Singh seems like the only minister who can work with Bismita Gogoi having a lot of expectations from the public, but overall, the new ministry will not be able to retain the 2016 elections. Himanta Biswa Sarma might be a Gogoi rival now but according to Congress party workers he is the best performer till date in Gogoi government but at present he is just an MLA and will remain outside till Tarun Gogoi is removed from the post of chief minister. Assam seriously lacks good leaders and Gogoi has proved it again. rahul.chanda@g-plus.in

The deceased were identified as Birendranath Sarma (45), his wife Nikumoni Sarma (38) and their minor son aged around 12 years. Sarma and his son died instantly on the spot while Nikumoni died soon after reaching the hospital. Soon after the incident, the public blocked the road protesting against the increasing number of accidents in the area. Vehicular movement was halted for more than an hour which caused a heavy traffic jam in the VIP road from Narengi to Sixmile.

Life

O

ne of the first things successful people realize is the old adage, “if it is to be, it is up to me.” That is, for you, the fact that your success and your course is up to you. This doesn’t mean that you do it all alone. It simply means that you take responsibility for your life and your career. Too many people today look at opportunity and figure it is up to someone else to make sure they get it. They look at financial security and hope that the government will make sure they live safely in retirement or in case of disability. They wait and wait, figuring that it is up to someone else. And then the wait is over, and it is too late to do anything. Their life is over and they are filled with regret. This isn’t true for you however. You know that you must take responsibility for your life. It is up to you. The fact is that nobody else is going to do it for you--you must do it yourself.

I

n 1905, the year following the composition of another popular song, poet and composer, Mohammad Iqbal, recited “Sare Jahaan se Accha” at the Government College, Lahore, on an invitation from his student Lala Har Dayal. So, instead of presenting a speech, Iqbal sang this song, which he composed in 1904 and which was published in the weekly journal Ittehad on 16 August 1904. The song, in addition to embodying yearning and attachment to the land of Hindustan, expressed “cultural memory” and had an elegiac quality. In 1905, the 27-year-old Iqbal viewed the future society of the subcontinent as both a pluralistic and composite Hindu-Muslim culture. Sare jahan se accha hindostan hamara Hum bulbulain hai iss ki yeh gulsitan hamara Sare jahan se accha Ghurbat men hon agar ham rahta hai dil vatan men Samjho vahin hamen bhi dil hain jahan hamara Parbat voh sab se uncha hamsaya asman ka Voh santari hamara voh pasban hamara Godi men khelti hain is ki hazaron nadiya Gulshan hai jin ke dam se rashk-e-janan hamara Aye ab raud ganga voh din hen yad tujhko Utara tere kinare jab karvan hamara Mazhab nahin sikhata apas men bayr rakhna Hindvi hai ham vatan hai hindostan hamara Yunan o misr o roma sab mil gaye jahan se Ab tak magar hai baqi

Now, some people may say, “Jim, that’s a lot of responsibility.” Friends, that is the best news you can ever hear. You get to choose your life. Hundreds of millions of people all around this world would give anything to live in the situation you do--just for the chance to have the opportunity to take control of their destiny. “It is up to you” is a great blessing!

IT IS UP TO YOU Jim Rohn

Here’s why

You get to chart your own destiny. Maybe you want to start a small business and stay there. That’s great because you can choose that. Maybe you want to create a small chain of stores. Maybe you want to have a net worth of $100 million. That’s okay, too. The idea is that you get to choose. You can do whatever you like. Different people have different dreams and they should live them accordingly. You can reap what you sow. Sleep in and go to work late and reap the return. Or get up early and out-

work the others and earn a greater return. Place your capital at risk and earn a return--or place it at greater risk and perhaps reap a greater return. You decide what you will sow and thus what you will reap. No one else can stop you from getting your dream. Yes, there will always be things that come up and people who may not like what you are doing, but you can just move on and chart your own course. There is great freedom in that.

You experience the joy of selfdetermination. There is no greater pride than knowing you set your mind on something and accomplished it. Those who live with a victim mentality never get to experience the joy of accomplishment because they are always waiting for someone else to come to the rescue. Those who take responsibility get to live the joy of seeing a job well done. Let me ask you a question: Where will you be in 5 years? 10 years? Or 25 years? Do you know? DO you have an idea? Have you ever dreamed about it or set a goal for it? Are you willing to take responsibility and recognize that, “It is up to you?” You will be wherever you decide to be in those timeframes. You decide. It is up to you. And that is very exciting!

I pledge my allegiance to thee nam o nishan hamara Kuch bat hai keh hasti milati nahin hamari Sadiyon raha hai dushman daur e zaman hamara Iqbal koi meharam apna nahin jahan men Malum kya kisi ko dard e nihan hamara Sare jahan se accha hindostan hamara Ham bulbulain hai is ki yeh gulsitan hamara

English Translation Better than the entire world, is our Hindustan, We are its nightingales, and it (is) our garden abode If we are in an alien place, the heart remains in the homeland, Know us to be only there where our heart is. We have no confidant in this world What does anyone know of our hidden pain? A poem, a song picturising the true spirit of an Indian committed to his motherland. Every word, every line romanticising the Nation, none other than our Bharat Mata, our Hindustan. So, why wasn’t this song taken up as the National Anthem? There could possibly be many angles to answering this most vital question. Could it be that Iqbal had his roots as an Indian from Lahore? This could be one plausibility. Iqbal incidentally was also an architect with Jinnah for a separate Muslim state. Then, there is the other reasoning that Pt. Nehru chose Jana Gana Mana over Sare Jahan se Acha, because it had the word “Bharat” in the lyrics instead of “Hindustan”, which was more appropriate for the secular nature of the country. In spite of its creator, Iqbal’s disavowal of it, when he pledged his al-

legiance to Pakistan, Saare Jahan Se Achcha has remained popular in India for over a century. Mahatma Gandhi is said to have sung it over a hundred times when he was imprisoned at Yerawada Jail in Pune in the 1930s. The poem was set to music in the 1950s by sitarist, Ravi Shankar and recorded by singer Lata Mangeshkar. Stanzas (1), (3), (4), and (6) of the song became an unofficial national song in India and were also turned into the official quick march of the Indian Armed Forces. Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian cosmonaut, employed the first line of the song in 1984 to describe to then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, how India appeared from outer space. Former Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, quoted the poem at his first press conference. But having said this, my heart is forever heavy that though we are still offering our Bharat Mata flowers at her feet; these flowers are stale, dry and without that aroma befitting a country , which has given us and still continues to do so, the 1.2 billion population, more than we have asked for! Couldn’t we have offered Mother India, our country, flowers which were fresh, aromatic and resplendent with the many hues of a copious poem? Just a thought!

No doubt you may not follow it 100% but you cannot deny that your life has changed and you are following it at least 80%. So even if you are not following the course points or the knowledge a 100%, you look into the 80% of the points that you are following. There are people who have not even understood or started their journey. For them you can be a real help. One more thing, when you teach others, you also learn, so don’t say that I am a hypocrite. As you are teaching, you are also learning and you are refreshing the knowledge. Instead of sitting and blaming yourself and others, it is better you start teaching. Otherwise you will sit and blame yourself, ‘I am weak, I am unable to follow the knowledge, I am bad’, and then you go into guilt and selfblame. This is the worst thing that can happen to you on the spiritual path. That is why on this path, you always have a guru or a master. You leave your weakness to your master and go with the strength that you have and move as much as you can. So don’t be hard on yourself, and at the same time, recognize that you don’t follow all the knowledge but you have the intention to follow and that is good. So just move on. Don’t get off the path and blame yourself. If you feel that way, just come and sit in an advance course, or a blessing course and it will wash it all off, because this life is a journey and you have to keep moving till you find perfection. And slowly and steadily you will definitely get it. Just turn back and analyse. Suppose you had not followed any of the points in life, where would you have been? It will be utterly scary, that is why know this and walk ahead. Leave your shortcomings to me.

Investment plans for working women ROHIT SARAWGI Independent Financial Advisor

T

he general perception that women are shopaholics who love to spend and are very bad investors could very well be a thing of the past with more and more women taking responsibilities for their earnings and investing their surplus savings. This is critical nowadays, where single incomes are no match for a bloating inflation! A well- planned double income often becomes essential to plan investment goals effectively for a secured future and comfortable retirement! However, when saving, women need to keep the bigger picture in mind and save for themselves as well as for their family. It is simply not enough just to save money but they have to invest in order to get more returns. Think of your long term and short term goals in life. For example, retirement planning, your child’s higher studies, a dream home, world tour etc. could be your long term goals and your short term goals can be doing a part time course, closing your educational loan, marriage etc. Remember, inflation is always going to reduce the value of your money. Let inflation be an important factor in mind before you plan your investments. Women need to master the art of investment, in order to stay financially independent and to plan for retirement. There is no particular age to start saving for your retirement. The earlier you start the better it is.

Investment for teenagers It is obvious that women will not have much cash in hands as teenagers, but one can still cut down on unwanted expenses and save some amount of pocket money. You can save the money to reach your short term goals such as buying gifts for your friends and parents, for your own birthday party and so on. It will also help you build your savings habit.

Investment in your 20s In their 20s, women decide their career and their future. Equities can be a good investment choice as you can take more risk when you are young. You can choose to invest in mutual funds for your long- term goals, as mutual funds will give you the benefit of professionals managing your money. Take up suitable health insurance plans at this age; this will

P

lanning is very important in order to keep the functioning of a house streamlined. Systematically thinking about financial planning can help a household immensely. Running a household is a collective effort. So when you are thinking of savings, it becomes important to jot down things that matter most to your financial wellbeing. Here is a quick look at how you can plan your budget well:

Investment in your 40s take care of your medical emergencies. Make sure you have sufficient liquid funds to help you during emergencies. This should be the right stage to decide your long -term goals. Planning has to be in such a way that the long-term investments give you good returns at the appropriate time.

Investment in your 30s At this stage of life, women are generally married and likely to have children. They become responsible for their family, and they have to secure their children’s future. It is advisable to choose suitable term insurance plans and mutual funds that perform well. You have to choose educational plans for your children and tax plans for yourselves. You can also choose to invest in real estate for long term growth. Investment in gold is another good option; always buy gold in the form of coins or bars or invest in gold funds, never consider gold ornaments as an investment. Gold in the form of jewellery is only going to cause loss in the form of wastage and production/making charges.

5 tips to managing your monthly budget

You will generally be earning more money at this age.So try to increase your retirement savings and savings for your children’s marriage and their higher education. If you were planning to buy or build a house, this would be the appropriate stage.

Investment in your 50s As you will be nearing your retirement, better invest in funds that involve lesser risk. Try to transfer a portion of your investment in equity to debt because in case there is a fall in the market at the time of your daughter’s marriage you will have to face a loss and will not get sufficient money. Therefore, if you are planning for your daughter’s marriage, shift your funds from equity to debt one year prior to the wedding planned. Investment in senior citizen savings scheme would be appropriate for women who are above 60 years, as you will receive more returns compared to other schemes. Bank deposits and FDs will give you decent returns and your money will be safe. You can also rent a part of your house and earn money out of it.

1. Before withdrawing the

salary from the ATM as soon as it arrives, just make a list of must do things for the month that may include your home loan EMIs or any other investment commitments.

2. Keep some money extra (even Rs 500 a month can yield you good results after couple of months) so that whenever you are required to pay your insurance premium, you have some surplus amount in hand. 3. Give priority to children’s health and education related expense. At the same time, think about your expenses too. 4. Try not to get too tempted by offers in the market. Satisfy yourself with window shopping if you do not really require any product or service for that matter.

5. Plan your vacation well in advance so that you can save on your air travel fare. This really acts as a motivator. And enjoy life while saving.

Ranbir’s ‘Bombay Velvet’ a `100-crore mess?

A

nurag Kashyap’s ambitious project ‘Bombay Velvet’ starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma seems to have hit a rough patch as the makers are apparently mighty worried about its length and constantly soaring budget Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Bombay Velvet’ has been a subject of gossip and rumour for quite

a long time now. Even though Kashyap took to the social media network to put the rumours to rest, they kept coming back. The latest whispers in the industry circuit suggest that the makers are losing sleep over the post production work. The film starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Raveena Tandon and Karan Johar is slated for a May release. Sources say the film’s running time has apparently turned out to be inordinately long, prompting Fox Star Studios, part producers of the film, to outsource the editing job so that they cut it down to size. The new editing team has apparently decided to chop out three or four songs, featuring Anushka and Raveena, so that they don’t interfere with the flow of the film. “When the producers realised that the film’s duration is over four hours even after editing was done, they decided to get the scenes chopped off further. As of now, it looks like the songs featuring Anushka and Raveena will not see the light of the day”, mentioned a source Recently, Vikas Bahl shot a special promotional song with Anushka. “They are also hiring various people to complete the editing work. A lot of money is at stake,” the source adds.

N

ewbie actress Arjumman Mughal who appeared with Ajaz Khan in message-oriented movie Ya Rab last year, feels that Bigg Boss has been unjust and unfair towards Ajaz. “The way Ajaz was unceremoniously removed from the show, it seemed that the Boss was hell bent on destroying his own prodigy,” she feels. It is no secret that the reality show picked Ajaz from near obscurity, and propelled him to instant national fame as the entertaining ‘Ek Number Manas’ when it introduced the brazen actor in an earlier season. But after giving him a re-entry along with Rahul Mahajan, Mahek Chahal, Sana Khan and Sambhavna Seth as a Challenger in Bigg Boss Halla Bol this year, the Boss humiliated Ajaz and threw him out of the House. Ajaz had got into a fight with co-participant Ali Quli Mirza after which Bigg Boss disgraced and removed him from the show. “He could have been given another chance; an opportunity to reconcile or justify his stance,” says Arjumman. “It was disheartening to note the way it all abruptly ended for Ajaz on the show, which he had given so much to in the past,” Arjumman points out.

ith the season of award shows on, actor Arjun Rampal says such functions are money making businesses except the National Award. “I think it’s a money making business. National award is the only award which is not a commercial event and it’s the only award function which has got any weight,” said Ar-

jun, who received the National Award for Supporting Actor for his role in “Rock On”. The actor who hails from a non filmy background says he doesn’t feel like an outsider. “I don’t feel as an outsider in this industry. I have immense respect for the Industry and will do anything and everything in my power to contribute back to it,” he said.

Ajay return from Canada without shooting a single scene

A

jay Devgan, who was in Canada for the shoot of his directorial venture, Shivaay, had to apparently return to Mumbai without shooting a single shot. The script required them to shoot during heavy snowfall. Devgan was not too happy with the amount of snowfall and expected it to be heavier. After waiting for some days and counting the inches of snowfall in vain, the unit decided to return home empty-handed. Perhaps going to Shimla or Srinagar to check if the locations fit his requirement would have been easier on the pocket.

trangely, Shahid Kapoor preferred to avoid ex-flame Priyanka Chopra at a recent event. The two, who stay in the same housing complex in Versova, just missed crossing paths recently. PC was preening and pirouetting on the red carpet for the shutterbugs in her cape-and-hood dress. Shahid happened to arrive immediately after, but when he saw Priyanka ahead of him, he stopped in his tracks. He then did a U-turn and began talking shop with director Milan Luthria who was behind him till she moved away.

mysterious yet enticing wife, a demon husband, a young novelist and dark silences are packed and transported to a rambling house in the snowy Kashmir. They all converge in Khamoshiyan and bring out terrifying elements to spook you out. What makes this Karan Darra’s directorial different from recent obnoxious horror-tales is that besides having not so unfamiliar plot, the movie’s culmination is compelling, which is so vital for a horror-mystery. After a series of avoidable fares, the horror cinema is back with a vengeance. It may not be the most eerie experience, but it has its share of terrifying moments that one expects from a film that deals with psychological ways leading to paranormal events. A young novelist Kabir (Ali Fazal) is a one-book wonder and is on an inspirational journey to find himself and write his book. He meets a young and beautiful lady Meera (Sapna Pabbi) who runs the isolated guest-house in Kashmir, which he

finds weird. Meera is married to the owner of this guest-house Jaidev (Gurmeet) who was once a rich paper mill owner. Jaidev under the disguise of his charming persona is a controlling demon. Kabir soon begins to encounter unusual things and discovers secrets about the house and its owner Meera. Meera is evasive about these suspicious incidents that are taking place. The more Kabir interacts with Meera about these strange incidents the more he gets drawn towards her. What are the secrets that are hidden behind her silence? Khamoshiyan gives you gripping answers to those questions. Without doubt, the movie will help Bhatt’s to regain the place in the horror-genre. In fact, it’s after a really long gap that they seem to be in a complete command. The writing by Vikram Bhatt, is well structured while director Karan builds and sustains the required mystery around it until he thrills us all with its convincing climax.

he bite-sized Captain Toad stages in Super Mario 3D World were a wonderful side dish, offering a very different type of challenge from the rest of the game. Little did we know at the time that the compact, puzzle-like levels would eventually find new life in a full-fledged game, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Now, Captain Toad and Toadette, his partner in plunder, have hit the road on a quest of their own, and it’s one of the most charming and enjoyable games to grace the Wii U. The two tiny explorers squawk and trot to all corners of the Mushroom Kingdom in search of golden treasure, and occasionally to rescue each other from danger. While it has a gleeful exterior, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker’s also a decep-

tively challenging romp, especially if you attempt to uncover all of the game’s hidden items. The Toads’ outing is distinct from other adventures in the Mario universe for many reasons, but one in particular stands out: their abilities are pared down to the basics. They can’t jump, and they don’t take on any superpowered transformations. Such simplicity may sound boring, but it works because you’re more reliant on elements in the world than your abilities to get from A to B. Ladders, ramps, and moving platforms may yield an avenue to the stage’s goal, a golden star, or they could be false leads. Deciphering all of the interconnecting parts of each stage requires a fair amount of abstract thought and mental coordination.

he first thing you notice is that voice: Dahlia, 24, sings in a deep, throaty vibrato and raps the same way. Sometimes it’s smooth and rich; more often, it’s sharp and angstridden, each word intentionally rough-edged. (This approach takes its toll: In 2014, Dahlia was treated for a career-threatening pseudocyst on her vocal chords.) She’s at her best somewhere in between, as on twinkly single “Crazy,” a stadium-size soul number on which Dahlia marvels at the absurdity of infatuation. Elsewhere, her softer side shines: “I Think I’m in Love Again” is a sun-dappled power ballad that should find radio success with the right push; “Lava” is breezy, brown-eyed soul reminiscent of Amy Winehouse.

roundbreaking, thrilling and revealing, The Reaper is the astonishing memoir of Special Operations Direct Action Sniper Nicholas Irving, the 3rd Ranger Battalion’s deadliest sniper with 33 confirmed kills, though his remarkable career total, including probables, is unknown. Irving shares the true story of his extraordinary military career, including his deployment to Afghanistan in the summer of 2009, when he set another record, this time for enemy kills on a single deployment. His teammates and chain of command labeled him “The Reaper,” and his actions on the battlefield became the stuff of legend, culminating in an extraordinary face-off against an enemy sniper known simply as The Chechnian. Irving’s astonishing first-person account of his development into an expert assassin offers a fascinating and extremely rare view of special operations combat missions through the eyes of a Ranger sniper during the Global War on Terrorism. From the brotherhood and sacrifice of teammates in battle to the cold reality of taking a life to protect another, no other book dives so deep inside the life of an Army sniper on point.

Hike Messenger adds voice calling feature

HTC Desire 526G+, octa-core dual-SIM phone launched at `10,400

ike messenger has officially launched voice calling feature called ‘Hike Calls’. The introduction of this feature will allow hike users to call each other for free, over 2G, 3G and Wi-Fi and across the globe in over 200 countries. The introduction of hike calls has come in within a month of hike making it’s first acquisition - a free calling app – Zip Phone. The free hike calling feature has been launched in beta on Android, which contributes to over 90% of hike’s user base. The iOS and Windows versions are slated to release by the end of this quarter. Hike says its calls are optimized to consume very little data, giving its users more calling minutes per MB of data. Given that a majority of the

mobile-internet users of India are still experimenting with data and are not on a high-bandwidth connection, this optimization becomes critical for the Indian market. Commenting on the launch of the calling feature, Kavin Bharti Mittal, Founder and CEO, hike messenger, said “While building free hike calls, we kept two things in mind. Firstly, India is a very cost sensitive market and as a result we’ve ensured that our service is extremely efficient on data. It means our users can pack in more minutes per MB when calling on hike. Secondly, we’ve made hike’s free calling service available globally in over 200+ countries. Hikers from India can now speak with their loved ones in India and across the world for free.”

With a flurry of activity at the top of your chart, this is one of the better times to move ahead with plans or make that career change you’ve been considering. Connecting with the right people and being willing to lend a hand where necessary could endear you to those who make the decisions. You’ll also be eager to explore opportunities that are a little outside your comfort zone. And with Mercury retrograde, the past could inspire action in the present.

Cancer While you can’t always get what you want, you can benefit from talking about it this week. A lovely lineup in your travel and adventure sector hints at a desire to escape for a long vacation or perhaps a short romantic break. If you’ve been working hard, you may need a little time to kick back and indulge. However, such thoughts could conflict with work that needs to get done. With a little planning, perhaps it isn’t out of the question after all.

Libra

Some lively energies encourage you to keep going regarding your goals and tasks. But you’ll really make progress when you think outside the box and let your inspiration lead you on a journey of discovery. Meanwhile, your love life rocks! Whether you’re single or already smitten, this week’s blend of energies will inspire you to let your inner romantic out - with delightful results. There’s also a chance of mixed signals, so avoid doing or saying anything that could be taken the wrong way.

Capricorn

Scorpio

Health and wellness issues come into focus, encouraging you to look at your everyday habits to see what works and what doesn’t. Meanwhile, obstacles to progress at work may need some careful handling. Don’t immediately give in to others’ demands, as this is the time to fight for what is right. With Venus moving into Pisces this week, you could be tempted to overindulge. While a little of what you fancy does you good, it helps to go easy.

Though the presence of Jupiter at the top of your chart hints that you’re ready to toot your own horn, you may have more success if you employ subtler methods of getting your message across. In contrast, there’s a lot going on in your home and family sector, with many opportunities for get-togethers, celebrations, and fun. And with your romance zone in focus, it might be time to arrange a special treat for the one you love. It will really be appreciated!

Aquarius

With Mercury retrograde in your personal financial sector, it helps to be cautious when purchasing big-ticket items or buying online. Though you may think you’re getting a bargain, there’s a chance you may not be. It helps to keep receipts and paperwork, as there’s a good chance you’ll need them later. Your compassionate side may be out in full force when Venus sashays into Pisces. While you may want to volunteer your time to help, use some discretion.

You may feel you’re taking one step forward and two steps back this week, especially as Mercury continues retrograde in your sign. But an opportunity to review a decision or rework a project could bring benefits in the long term. Where finances are concerned, you could be tempted to indulge in a few luxuries. But rather than buying items, you might get more satisfaction out of purchasing experiences, such as a spa day, a soothing massage, or special beauty treatment.

Pisces The presence of Venus in Pisces on Tuesday only adds to your mystique. You may attract attention without doing anything to encourage it. You’ll also be a lot more compassionate and sensitive to other people’s needs and likelier to spend time listening to their problems and stories. While this is very commendable, you need to be firm with certain people who may try to take advantage. On another note, this is a great time to enhance your image and boost your confidence.

Useful Life Hacks CONVERT CHEAP PANTS HANGERS INTO BAG CLIPS This is an easy way to have a few extra chip bag clips around the house. Just look in your closet and you’ll probably find some extra pants hangers f loating around. Break off the ends to turn them into chip clips and keep your chips fresh for longer.

JUST FOR LAUGHs Two factory workers are talking. The woman says, “I can make the boss give me the day off.” The man replies, “And how would you do that?” The woman says, “Just wait and see.” She then hangs upside-down from the ceiling. The boss comes in and says, “What are you doing?” The woman replies, “I’m a light bulb.” The boss then says, “You’ve been working so much that you’ve gone crazy. I think you need to take the day off.” The man starts to follow her and the boss says, “Where are you going?” The man says, “I’m going home, too. I can’t work in the dark.”

Facebook implicated in a third of all divorce cases over cheating

A

new survey has examined that Facebook is now considered as a third of all divorce cases as it provides evidence of infidelity and new relationships unwittingly. A survey of legal firms’ caseloads revealed the social network is increasingly relied upon as proof of inappropriate behaviour, the Mirror reported. Specialists at the firm examined over 200 cases and found Facebook was used by legal teams in just over a third of cases. Julian Hawkhead, a managing partner at Stowe Family Law, said that photographs and comments made on these

forums can be used as evidence of relationships or of a lifestyle which contradicts what people will otherwise try to portray. Hawkhead said that they regularly find clients coming to them with information they have found which is available in the public domain with proof of a relationship.

The 29-year-old model - who has son Phyllon, three, and daughter Myllena, four months, with husband Sunnery James - tries to keep her beauty regime simple when she isn’t working and has learned some quick shortcuts to keep her looking her best with little time or effort. She explained: “I keep my skincare and makeup as easy as possible. In the morning I shower and rinse my face, then use a L’Oréal BB cream - I don’t have to worry about moisturiser, foundation or concealer when I use a hydrating BB cream. “And curling my lashes makes such a big difference. Even if I’m not wearing mascara, I always give them a quick curl to open up my eyes. But usually I wear a little mascara and just keep the lip natural with a balm.

Scientists have successfully un-boiled an egg

Skint Japanese air hostesses sleeping with pilots for money

apanese air stewardesses in need of money have reportedly started their own prostitution business and are sleeping with pilots, charging them for sex. According to an air hostess, stewardesses who have seen wages cut by as much as 6000 pounds, charge between 300 to 450 pounds for romps, and women under the age of 30 demand the highest fee, the Daily Star reported. She added that there was a system where the stewardesses who were willing passed their number to a senior stewardess, who’s a female pimp, and if the pilot’s are interested in someone, they use hand signals to convey the same and tell how much they will pay. Reports of such cases had first emerged in 2007, and a woman claimed that the stewardesses were lined up in front of the pilot and co- pilot before pre-flight safety checks.

“always” curls her eyelashes even when not wearing make-up because she finds it makes a big difference to her appearance.

S

cientists have been able to unboil an egg with the use of chemicals. They achieved this by adding urea to a hardboiled egg to break down its proteins and thus return it to its liquid form. The then used a machine to re-assemble the broken pieces. The experts are adamant that this could one day help to lower the cost of cancer treatment as well as the costs involved in cheese making. When an egg is put in a pan to boil the proteins become tangled to form the solid yolk. The chemists from the University of California Irvine and the University of Western Australia have found that an egg can be unboiled if the urea is added into the mix.

‘Yes, we have invented a way to unboil a hen egg,’ said Professor Gregory Weiss, a biochemist at UC Irvine. ‘In our paper, we describe a device for pulling apart tangled proteins and allowing them to refold.’ The team boiled the egg whites for 20 minutes at 90°C (194°F). They then added the urea to work on the whites to liquefy the solids and break down their proteins. Urea, is the chemical compound that is found in urine, however it can also be made artificially as well. The loose proteins are still merged together somewhat and cannot be used so they are put in a vortex fluid device to separate them. The machine stresses the tiny bits of protein making them reverse back to their original liquid form. The scientists have not confirmed if the eggs are edible after they have been un-boiled. The aspiration is that i could ‘transform industrial and research production of proteins.’ There has been a struggle among scientists to create or recycle molecular proteins which can be widely applied- they generally distort into the wrong shape- which ultimately makes them useless.
