AFFAIR compels 21-year-old girl to kill self

B Borooah College student hangs herself inside hostel

W

ith increasing pressure to conform to rapid societal changes and growing isolation among the youth, young students especially, are forced to take drastic steps to hide their frustration and feeling of failure. The recent incident of a B Borooah College student who allegedly killed herself is once again raising questions about the value education aspect in our schools and colleges which the students require to combat any kind of pressure. However, what compelled a 21-year-old girl take such a drastic step like suicide, who forced her to it and who should ultimately be blamed for the rise of such a social problem still remains an open ended question.

The incident

On 1st February afternoon at around 12.30 pm, a B Borooah College, Department of Economics, sixth semester student Arpita Kashyap was found dead in the Lilawati Girls Hostel located at Lamb Road. According to hostel workers, during that time, usually the hostel remains empty as almost all the students are out for their

Rahul Chanda respective classes and regular works. Arpita hanged herself and when her room was opened she was found dead. The hostel workers informed the police and an UD (unnatural death) case (case number – 03/15) was registered in Latasil Police Station. According to police, Kashyap left a suicide note specially mentioning, “Sanju is innocent and it is not his fault.” It was also written in the suicide note that she was not able to fulfil anybody’s expectation and she do not deserves to survive. She also apologised to her parents for not being able to obey them. But the most pertinant link that has emerged is Sanju.

parents recently came to know about Arpita’s relationship with Sanju and were putting a lot of pressure on her to leave Sanju and concentrate on her studies. The parents even threatened her that they will come to Guwahati and take her back to Nagaon if she continues the relation with Sanju.” The close friend further added that since few days Arpita was in depression and did not know what to do. It seems that she was very emotional and did not want to lie about anything to her parents. Finally she committed suicide but no one thought that she could ever take such a step.

The love story

Department of Economics Assistant Professor Manoj Kumar Das said, “Arpita was a regular girl and used to hardly miss her classes. Academically she was a good student and used to actively participate in all the departmental activities. She was a bit reserved but used to mix up with people well known to her. She was a gentle girl and we never thought that she could take such a step in life.” The teacher further added that these days,

According to some of her close friends, Arpita was deeply in love with one Sanju Borbora from the Geography department of same college. They were in a relationship since last one and half years and were making future plans together. Arpita originally hailed from Panigaon Chariali in Nagaon district and her parents live there. Arpita’s close friend on the condition of anonymity told G Plus, “Her

parents do not give freedom to choose career or partners, and when there is no freedom, a pressure gets created. Students undergo a lot of frustration, depression and to get the student out of such situations a proper counselling and guidance should be provided by someone who his friendly to him/ her. According to Das, there might be a lot of social networking sites at present but people have fewer healthy relationships with actual people whom they can share everything. Students do not share their personal problems with others because of which they do not receive proper guidance when re-

quired. A teacher can play the role of a friend, philosopher and guide and build up a healthy relationship with the students where the student can share everything and can get proper guidance when required which will help people from taking such pathetic steps. The teacher also explained that modern day parents should change their attitude and behaviour towards their children and be friendly with them so that if any wrong decision is taken by any kid, the child can be politely explained about the consequences rather than firmly asserting any pressure which will further misguide the child. Especially the youths are to be handled with utmost sensitivity as the modern day youth has to deal with many challenges and competitions which already creates a lot of pressure in their lives. According to B Borooah College Geography department students, Sanju Borbora is a sincere and a good boy and after the incident he is in a deep shock and is not attending college since then.

Two mysterY deaths scare Guwahati

ith passing years the city is witnessing an increase in the numbers of crime reported against women. In 2014, Guwahati reported 431 cases of kidnapping against girls and women, 97 rape cases, 10 dowry deaths, 237 molestation cases and 13 cases of immoral trafficking. Young girls are also committing suicide quite often in the city for various reasons. Recently, mysterious deaths of two girls have rocked the entire city and questions of women safety is also erupting from all corners. G Plus reports both the incidents and looks into the various possibilities of the crimes.

Bamunimaidam incident On 3rd February, a 25-yearold woman was found mysteriously dead near the Amrit Enclave Apartment at Bamunimaidam. According to some local residents of the apartment, the woman jumped from the roof of the seven storied building and she died on the spot. The Chandmari police was informed and according to police, no one in the apartment, including the security guard had any idea about where the woman came from and why did she

jumped from the apartment. An UD case (unnatural death case number – 7/15) was registered in the Chandmari Police Station and after the post mortem, the body of the woman is being kept in the GMCH morgue. The body remains unidentified and the Chandmari police informed all the police stations if they can get any information of anyone claiming the body. On 5th February, the parents of the dead woman reached the morgue and identified the body. The body was of one Ivy Das hailing from Gotanagar area. Ivy’s mother then said that her daughter was missing since October 2014 and the police and their family members were not able to trace her since then. According to Ivy’s mother, Ivy had eloped with a boy named Arpan Deori from Noonmati on 26th July 2014. After two days they returned to Ivy’s house but the family members did not accept them as they had not get married. They left the house and since then they were not traceable. The family realised their mistake and tried to contact them but, it was not possible and in the month of October, a missing complaint was lodged at the SSP office. Ivy’s mother was shocked to know that her daughter was dead and is of the

Kharguli incident A similar alleged suicide case was reported in the Kharguli area on 2nd February where a 19-year-old girl, Ranju Singha, jumped from a six storey building (Sitala Enclave) at Malibagan in Kharguli. The girl was living with one Ram Nath Chamaria’s family who owns a flat in the enclave. After jumping, the girl was severely injured. Ram Nath Chamaria took her to the nearby Borthakur Clinic, but doctors there referred her to GMCH. According to police, the ICU in GMCH was not empty, so, she had to be taken to GNRC where the doctors declared her brought dead. The Latasil Police initially registered an UD case (case number – 4/15) but on 5th February, Ranju’s cousin came from Bongaigaon and filed a complaint in the same police station, on basis of which police filed another case (case number – 46/15 under section 306/34 of IPC).

Unless the cops start getting the postmortem reports on time, the investigation process will never be able to complete in a speedy manner. According to Ranju’s cousin, Sayan Kumar Singha, who is also the President of Chirang district’s All Kooch Rajbongshi Students Union, a person can only commit suicide if he/she is mentally or physically tortured. He said, “Ranju is poor and parentless and was living with her aunty in Bongaigaon. She started working with Chamaria’s family as a domestic help few months back who live in Tezpur. We had invited her during Magh Bihu, but Chamaria said that they will have to go to Guwahati for his son’s marriage.” He further added that on 31st January, Chamaria’s son got married in Hotel Brahmaputra Ashok, and they were still living in Guwahati in the flat owned by Chamaria and on 2nd February the incident took place. Singha said, “We demand justice and only proper investiga-

Organized on the occasion of 26th anniversary of the city based private hospital, the general health camp was attended by over 120 journalists and their family members. Physicians from various departments like General Medicine (Dr Swapnav Borthakur, Dr Nitin Naharkar), Cardiology (Dr Dipannita Mahanta), Diabetology (Dr Rupam Das), ENT (Dr Dhruba Jyoti Dutta, Dr Srikanth Medam),Gynecology (Dr Monti Saha), Pediatrics (Dr Kahkasa Rahman Choudhury), HPB & Liver Transplant (Dr Dibya Jyoti Bora), Dermatology (Dr Saradi Sreemoyee) with physiotherapist Dr Arindam Deb, dietician Ms Tinababy Baruah provided necessary consultations to the participants. Dr NN Dutta, chairman and managing director of down town hospital with his senior colleagues Dr Udayan Barua and Mayurakshi Dutta graced the occasion. Talking to the reports, Dr Dutta, who instituted the popular hospital in northeast India, announced to continue the mission to aware the common people about various heath care opportunities in the country.

tion can solve the mystery whether it was murder or suicide. If it is a suicide, there has to be a reason for such a drastic step taken by a poor young innocent girl.” During the incident Ram Nath Chamaria and his family was in the flat, and according to other residents living in the apartment, since few days Chamaria’s house was being visited by many people, may be because of son’s marriage, but usually during events and functions, many crimes too takes place. According to highly placed sources in the police, there might be a sexual harassment angle to the case, but, only the post mortem report can only confirm the possibilities. The Chandmari police will soon investigate the matter and also look into the living condition of the deceased when she was in Tezpur. But till now no arrests has been made and police is claiming to be investigating the case. The problem which the police usually face in the city during investigating any case is the delay in receiving the post mortem report. Unless the cops start getting the post mortem reports on time, the investigation process will never be able to complete in a speedy manner.

Special courts

Schedule of special courts for Guwahati circle

hile owning a house of one’s own is the heartiest wish of everyone, the never ending hassles attached to registration and other formalities often rebuff many of us from going ahead with our dreams. The inordinate delays in registration and the seemingly ever changing rules often act as hindrances to acquring that perfect dream home. “I bought a 2BHK flat one year back in the Kahalipara area, and since then I am running pillar to post to fully register it at the DC office. I am from Shillong and do not get enough time to keep visiting Guwahati for the work. I have paid an agent to do the job, but, he is asking me for various documents every second day. When I go, either I do not get the officials who are expected to register the property or some or other correction is required in the documents I provide. I am fed up of the system”, said a businessman from Shillong who bought a flat in Guwahati last year. People face a lot of similar problems after buying immovable property registering them or getting them transferred in their own name. There are five revenue circles under Kamrup Metropolitan district (Dispur, Guwahati, Chandrapur, Azara and Sonapur) which has around 5000 pending immovable property mutation and partition cases. The district administration has planned a strategy to dispose all these pending cases within two months which will provide a great relief to the general public.

The reason

Over the period, frequent transfers of land have been done in all the five revenue circles, and because of the many upcoming apartments, people are also buying flats in the district. ADC BB Dev Choudhury said, “In view of the scenario of land transfers and property purchase, the land records need to be corrected. Large numbers of people have approached circle officers for registration of the flats and registration of the lands that they have purchased from others. Over the period the number of such prayers for registration has accumulated and now it has reached a significant number.” He further added that the district administration has felt that such a huge number of pending mutation cases cannot be disposed off, unless special initiative is taken. The most important problem the revenue officers face in the disposal of the mutation/partition cases is that the identification of the plot or the flat of the owners is not easy unless the applicant shows it on his own and it may also happen that when

The district administration has planned a strategy to dispose all these pending cases within two months the individual approaches the circle officers, the officers may be busy in various other duties like the eviction operation, election duty etc. Choudhury said that the circle officers have also not been able to give justice to the prayers of the applicants.

The plan

Under these circumstances the present Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (metro) M Angamuthu has fixed up a special programme for disposal of the pending mutation and partition cases of immovable property in the district.

Choudhury said, “The special campaign will start from 6th February and will continue till the end of March. More than 60 different venues have been fixed in different areas under Kamrup Metropolitan district where officers and revenue staff will be available on scheduled dates. The officials will dispose the pending mutation/partition cases on the spot as per legal provisions.” He further added that only pending mutation (registration) and partition cases will be dealt with, and the crowd turnout during the initial days will decide whether the administra-

tion will take fresh applications or not in the special field courts. When an applicant applies with mutation or partition issue, the circle officer issues notices against the application to check if anybody has any objection within one month. So, the special field courts will hear cases which are already applied for and the notices are already issued. If in the first twothree days, the administration is able to cope up with the gathering, then fresh applications for mutation and partition grievances will be entertained.

ADC Choudhury said, “Revenue administration is the main function of the DC office and such special drive in the interest of the public in the city will go a long way in strengthening the relationship between the administration and the public which is very crucial for the development of the city.” He further added that the functioning of the special field courts will be monitored by the ADCs and the DC himself will keep a check on the daily activities happening in the courts.

jeda Begum, wife of Abu Taleb, a murder accused who died at the Noonmati Police Station lock up on 27th January, has claimed that her husband was innocent and said, “Police killed my husband in the custody.” The district administration after the death ordered a magisterial level probe into the incident of alleged custodial death and executive magistrate Mukul Kamat is conducting the probe and is expected to submit his report within 15 days. The family members of the deceased have a different story to the incident and are recording their statements in front of the magistrate. Taleb’s wife talked to G Plus and narrated her part.

Begum’s story

25-year-old Ajeda Begum said, “My husband bought a vehicle last year on loan (WagonR, Number- AS 01 –AU-2846) and he used to drive that vehicle earning bread and butter for the entire family. We belong to a decent family hailing from Dolgaon Kharpuri in Darrang district. My husband got a trip to come to Guwahati on 26th January, and he was arrested by police on the same night. On 27th January we were informed by Dolgaon police that he died on that morning after complaining of abdominal pain, but, when he left for Guwahati, he was perfectly well and did not have any sickness.” She further said that when they

received the body, there were bruises and blood stains on entire body and there were marks of injury. The left knee according to her seemed broken and the face was swollen because of blows. Begum said, “My husband was brutally tortured to death.” She slammed the Noonmati police saying, “On 29th January when we went to Noonmati Police Station to register a complaint, the police initially was not registering a case and were behaving badly with us saying my husband was a murderer. Later, when media came to the police station, they registered a case.” She said that they are poor so, various organisations and bodies are not backing them to get justice for her husband, and if a same incident would have happened to someone who is well connected, there would have been protests organised everywhere.

The inaction

The complainant’s lawyer Advocate Atabur Rahman said, “A case was registered in Noonmati Police Station (case number -44/15 under section 302 of IPC) after a lot of pressure against the officer on duty on the night of 26th January SI Nilomani Malakar.” He further said that whenever a murder case is registered, the accused needs to be arrested, but, police did not take any departmental action till now, and they did not even suspend the accused. According to sources in the po-

lice, ACP (Crime) Suleman Ali is investigating the matter, and the Joint Commissioner of Police is also probing the case, so, any action can be taken against Malakar, only if the enquiry report finds him guilty. Malakar is on duty now, and if he is not suspended will not he be able to manipulate the case? Police claimed earlier that while in custody on 27th January morning, Taleb complained of some abdominal pain and he was taken to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital where he was declared dead. Police had said that Taleb and his associates had killed the driver of a truck and then ran away with the truck and its goods on January 16. 30-year-old

Taleb was arrested from Sixmile area on charges of kidnapping, vehicle theft and murder. According to media reports, the State Police Accountability Commission has given a very poor report card to the state police recently. A daily reported that the commission’s latest report said that police in Assam have extorted, black mailed and detained people arbitrarily and failed to register FIRs. The report also said that police has many a times violated the Supreme Court guidelines while dealing with cases. According to the report, in 2013, a total of 93 cases of serious misconduct by police have been registered by the commission. 36 cases were of delay in registration

of FIRs as well as inaction after registration of the complaint. 33 cases of blackmailing and extortion were registered against police officials and 17 cases were registered were police did not register any FIR at all. It is true that there lack of man power in police department which is one reason of high number of pending cases in various police stations. Just after formation of police commissionerate in Guwahati, Commissioner of Police Jyotirmay Chakravarty had said that he will try to build better police-public relation, but incidents like this somehow keeps scaring the public.

FIR lodged against KirAn Bedi for terming NE people as ‘immigrants’

T

he Assam police CID police station here has registered a FIR against five top BJP leaders including the party’s New Delhi chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi for terming people from North East living in New Delhi as immigrants. The other accused persons were BJP’s Delhi unit’s president Satish Upadhyay, chairman of the vision document Harsh Vardhan, spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor and party’s Pradesh in-charge Prabhat Jha. A local businessman Arun Pathak lodged a complaint with the agency against the saffron party leaders this morning after BJP in its vision document for Delhi polls referred people from northeast as ‘immigrants’. “The word ‘immigrant’ was dis-

tinct and the document surely was printed after thorough proofing. It is a deliberate racial act against the people of the region,” said Pathak, the complainant. In his FIR, Pathak said that BJP, by putting the offensive contents in the document and circulating it have intentionally promoted and attempted to endorse racial disharmony between the people from NE and other parts of India. He was even irked to find out that the changed version of the vision document was derogatory for the people of the region. After huge protests erupted in the region, mostly in Assam, against the use of the word ‘immigrants’, the party’s national and state leaders have apologized for

the act and termed it as a ‘clerical mistake’ and changed it. “The saffron party issued a clarification saying it was a printing mistake and then changed to ‘people from the NE in Delhi’. It is equally offensive in the sense that northeast doesn’t belong only to the people of NE origin. There is no statutory expression in law like this. By using such phrase, the accused persons have further alienated the people of the region on racial and geographical origin,” he alleged. The FIR slapped the top saffron leaders with criminal charges of promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony.

NDFB(S) ultra to be quizzed for 12 days

T

he National Investigation Agency (NIA) court here has extended the remand period of National Democratic Front of Boroland’s Songbijit (NDFB-S) faction militant Bikunas Narzary alias Birlangbai for another 12 days. He was in NIA custody for a week already. Birlangbai, a self-styled commanding officer of the outfit’s 13 battalion, was suspected of having direct connection to the attack on Adivasi people in Sonitpur district in December last year. The carnage by the outfit over Adivasis claimed at least 39 lives in Sonitpur district alone in only two days.

“He is a vital member of the outfit and we believe further interrogation can reveal more about the outfit’s movement in the jungles of Manas National Park and AssamArunachal Pradesh bordering areas,” NIA sources said. The sources said that Birlangbai being a top leader was close to the outfit’s elusive leader G Bidai. It added that Assam police and Army troops have succeeded in busting several hideouts of the outfit and seized huge cache of arms and ammunitions on NIA leads. Acting on a similar lead in January, Assam police arrested Birlangbai from Paglanala in Udalguri district.

City buses The biggest

traffic violators KALYAN DEB

City Buses stop for passengers right on the edges of the flyovers, blocking the traffic and causing traffic jams

V

iolation of traffic rules on the streets of Guwahati has become a regular phenomenon. Despite traffic awareness campaigns run by both government and public bodies, traffic violations seem to be unstoppable. Such violations are so rampant in the city that the traffic department detects several cases of traffic violation each single day. Drivers of city buses are among the biggest traffic violators on city roads. One of the significant violations that can be seen on a daily basis is the stopping of buses where there is no stoppage allotted. Apart from the private city buses, the mammoth sized city buses run by the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) have also emerged as a major source of traffic violators in the capital city. Areas such as the ends of flyovers are used as bus stoppages around the city. Six mile, Walford and the Ulubari flyovers are among the selfprompted bus stoppages by the commuters and the bus drivers of the city, where making such stops a violation of the traffic norms. Moreover, the buses turn in such a spot which makes it prone to accident for vehicles travelling via underneath the bridge. At every such stop, the bus takes an unapparent sudden halt of which the light moving vehicles travelling through such routes have no clue. Commuters, following the mindset ‘while in Rome, do what Romans do’ gather at such self-prompted stoppages, which in a way promotes and encourages the bus drivers to continue such violations.

“It is upto the bus drivers whether to or not to make stops in such areas. People generally gather around waiting for the bus and make a run to grab the best seat available, ignoring the fact whether or not the bus stopped at the prescribed stoppage. Also a bus generally stops where the driver sees most number of people gathered, so if the driver, ignoring the crowd, makes the stop at the authorised bus stoppage, it would also encourage people to wait at the bus stands”, said H. Doley, a commuter waiting to board a bus at the Six mile stand. “It is often seen that the city buses do not operate on the specified routes and also do not produce tickets to the passengers. Such buses should be fined by the traffic department, which is the only way to straighten the offenders,” he added. “The traffic authorities should tighten their grip on the city buses of the city and the bus associations, which has given rise to such situa-

tions. City buses here never give tickets to passengers, the staff don’t wear uniforms and, moreover, misbehaving with passengers is a common occurance,” said Naren Gogoi. D. Barman, member of Greater Guwahati United Motor Transport Association (GGUMTA) asserted, “The private bus owners’ association organise road safety meetings that is held in the presence of the bus drivers and conductors where they are made clear about the traffic norms and safety measures that are required to be observed by a bus driver. Despite such initiatives, the bus drivers violate the traffic rules which result in rendering

of fine to such buses. But, these days the drivers are only cautious about the presence of a motor vehicle inspector (MVI) who is the only authorised personnel to charge fines to a bus violating traffic norms, so regardless of the presence of a traffic constable, bus drivers continue making such stops.” “It is also due to the competition among the bus drivers when one bus avoids making a stop in such stoppage where there are people gathered, another bus will, that compels other buses to follow the same footsteps. In view of the inconvenience to the people, there are several stoppages in the city that are located in a further distance and are inconvenient for people to walk to. Such as the distance from Lachit Nagar to Ulubari, where the bus stoppage is located near the Apsara cinema hall, thus for an elderly person to walk to such a distance is severely inconvenient,” Barman added. Though the authorities constitute several check points within the city and impose fines on the buses that violate traffic norms, but the same has not sufficed in favour of the department. Although, the in-

sistent call of severe punishment over the violation of the traffic norms is a cry by the citizens of the city, the traffic department seems consistently failing to deliver. “In a meeting that was held on January 31 in the presence of the police commissioner of the city, a discussion was conducted over the issue of enforcing of traffic rules and regulations upon the buses running in the city. The bus owners’ association should also take the responsibility of the bus drivers and provide them with proper knowledge of following traffic rules and regulations”, asserted Pranab Jyoti Goswami, DCP, traffic department in a phonic conversation with GPlus. “Moreover, steps will be initiated to interact with the bus drivers. Most of the city bus drivers lack in basic education so, through such interactions it would make the drivers more aware of the traffic norms. Also the traffic department has been handicapped in keeping tally of data of the imposed fines on the violators. Since, the fining process is carried out manually and such occurrences take place in different parts of the city which are under the jurisdiction of different police stations, so keeping a tab of a particular vehicle would require separate workforce”, Goswami added. “A proposal of e-chalan has been forwarded to the transport office, which is I believe has been forwarded to the state ministry. An offender has to be involved in three offences for one’s licence to be cancelled. Initiation of the process would make keeping tally of any particular vehicle that has violated traffic norms simpler. If sanctioned, the entire process would take an approximate time of four months to set up”, the DCP informed. Meanwhile, a city bus carrying ten passengers flipped over at Hanuman Mandir, Noonmati on Thursday, February 5. The speeding bus in a pursuit to over-take another bus tried to move to the wrong lane during which the rear wheel brushed against the road divider causing the bus to flip over. Eight out of ten passengers were injured in the accident that took place on Thursday morning and were rushed to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital. Following the incident, city traffic police has tightened the grip over buses in the city since MVIs can be seen keeping track of buses indulging in violation of traffic norms. Rash driving among the bus drivers is a common view on the city roads, where trying to over-take each other to get more passengers, buses get indulged in excessive speeding.

Mrinmoyee Hazarika

‘Organic Love’ -another name has just been added to the natural and organic market scenario of the city very recently. With the brand new start up located at Zoo road, Supriya Khound and Lain Heringman have tried to inculcate the idea of eating and living clean and fresh among the people. Keeping all these things in mind, Supriya, a young Assamese lady and Lain, a Spanish youth moved here in Guwahati a few months back and started pursuing their dreams together. In an exclusive chit-chat with G Plus, Supriya, originally belonging to Dibrugarh spoke about the concept behind the opening up of ‘Organic Love’ while Lain, who grew up in UK and did his studies in US shared his multifaceted interest in the fields of classical music, magic etc and making adjustments in moving to Assam to be with his wife Supriya and their effort to unveil the untapped potential of the state in general and the city in particular.

First of all, say something about yourselves. LainThough I am originally from Spain, I grew up in UK mostly and my background is actually that of a classical musician as well as a magician. I went to specialist music for a year and went to music conservatory. I did complete my undergraduate studies in US and started searching for other academic areas and that is where I grew an interest in international development. Then, in 2008, I went to Mexico to work on developing a start-up there and we developed a model using micro credit and responsible tourism. Then, I went to pursue masters’ degree in LSE and that is where we (Supriya and Lain) met (laughs). I was doing masters in development studies and following that on sort of social enterprise, we took a similar sort of model to Vietnam (Supriya also joined later) and had a start-up in Vietnam and stayed there for two years. I was doing a bit of development consulting and after that I came to India and this was the first project that we have started here. SupriyaI did my schooling from Dibrugarh and then went to Tezpur and Delhi for higher studies, after which I went to LSE where I did my masters in social policy and development studies. Well, after my masters from LSE, I worked with UNESCO for a bit, then I went to work with Oxfam and then I decided to join Lain in Vietnam.

When and how did you

“The pace of work is slow here, which makes it tough to work”

conceptualise the idea of ‘Organic Love’? SupriyaI used to keep coming back here and wanted to be in Assam and I thought ‘Why be anywhere else, but your home state?’ Because, there is so much work to be done here. So, I came back here and started a NGO ‘Jonak’. We were doing lot of training for unemployed youths and working with women in interior places. It was in 2012. Besides, for economic reasons, I had to take up a job in an NGO called North East Network, which I loved to do. While working there, I came to know about grants and loans given by NEC and Ministry of DoNER to women and I took some help from them. During the time, I was travelling a lot. But, when I was living here I was upset about the kind of food available in the market. I had not lived in Assam for a while and I never lived in Guwahati. Whenever I was having anything, I have to be sure about where it is coming from. I realised that there is so many chemicals and pesticides in our food we are consuming it on daily basis. Then, Lain joined me here and we thought of initiating a start-up on clean and natural goods.

How do you cope up with issues like procuring organic food or marketing the same etc? SupriyaWe have done extensive research from where to get our products. Most of the brands available here in our store are organically certified, because, the people who want to buy from us want assurance on the products. So, first we have to gain the trust of the customers and make them understand that these products have been made or produced in a natural environment. We procure products

from all over the country. Now, we are also focusing on local procurement of products. LainA lot of products have been coming from Uttarakhand. They do a lot of organic farming. SupriyaYes. We are far behind than some of these states which is very unfortunate.

Your experience in starting a start-up here SupriyaWorking in Assam and starting a start-up is a tough job here. There should be more start ups and young people should be doing things for themselves. It is actually impossible to start a start up here. The bureaucratic hassles and layer and layers of running around and red tapes make the process very slow. LainIt is very slow here. I think things will change. There is so much potential in the entire North east in terms of economic development. It has lagged behind. That can also be explained in context of certain things that has happened in history of modern Assam. Now is the stage when the market is ready to take off. There is exposure to lot of new technologies and things are developing very quickly in Guwahati and other cities of Assam.

So far, how is the response you are getting from the people? Supriya We are happy and we are doing this because we are passionate about food and love to eat. Right now, our mission is to build a consciousness about how people eat and how they live. Because, we are becoming so

chose to move here in Guwahati?

Supriya and Lain

distant and trying to ape the west so much that we are forgetting our own indigenous clean sources of food. For instance, millet, which is a very healthy grain now is out of production. It has been more than a month since we opened the shop and so far and we are optimistic that we will be able to bring a change. LainThere is a lot of things to do. We are just enabling our people and that is one of the future projects for us. I think there are large group of people who want to learn the importance of clean food. They also understand they are investing on their health. It is very heartbreaking to see that lot of people in the food business do not care about what they are feeding to people. It is all about making money. The fact is that our food system has fragmented to the point where it is ok to sell anything even to neighbours.

Why have you (Lain)

Of course, Supriya is the biggest reason. Besides, I have spent some time in other parts of India including Bihar and I see so much of potential here. From a development perspective, there is a lot to do in such wide range of issues and I am excited to work on it. Right now, we are working on clean food. But, there are lot of other things I am interested in, such as clean energy, clean cook stoves, sanitation, clean transport and the list is endless.

So far, how is Your (Lain) work experience here in Guwahati?

It is definitely the hardest city I have worked in the world. Just because the work pace is slow here, it makes it tough to work here. Maybe, I am used to doing things very quickly. But, otherwise, it is very exciting and challenging. I have been here for only eight months. I sort of have a love-hate relationship with Guwahati. I love a lot of things about it but the traffic really irritates me. I have to fight for very basic things. People try to rip me off. SupriyaPeople try to cheat him all the time. Even when I was with him, some people try to cheat me as well and it was like ‘oh my God, you are trying to cheat me in my own place’! mrinmoyee.hazarika@g-plus.in

A

mong the several major roads around the city that remain in the worst of conditions even after over a year of the GMC elections, is the H.P.Brahmachari Road. The last construction of the road was carried out by Biraj Sharma, former vice-president, Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) around 22 years back. Prior to the GMC election, the road was constructed with stone dust that temporarily relieved the residents and passersby from the water logging and poor road condition. Being located near the Paltanbazar area, the H.P.B Road is a business hub and has outlets of several business organisations such as Blue Hill, Deep Travels and several other offices. The road is also a major way of transportation since the same connects the G.S.Road to A.K.Azad Road in Rehabari and remains busy for most part of the day with all kinds of vehicle, heavy or light, passing through. The principal reason of the road being in such poor condition is also the lack of permanent residents in the area that only counts up to eight numbers of families. Thus, the same resulted in the lack of initiative taken up for the development of the area that has trailed behind the proprietors of the business organisations. During monsoon, the road gets flooded with the water level rising upto two feet. Meanwhile, the business houses have been suffering losses due to the substandard condition of the area. “Though the area remains busy throughout the day, it is only the vehi-

cles that have to travel from Rehabari to G.S. Road. Since, it cut shorts the route of the passersby, it is one of the major way of transportation for most vehicles but the same has worsened the condition of the road over the years. In the recent past, three days prior to the GMC elections, the road was constructed, which did not even last for days. A rainfall on the same day caused the stone dust to drain away restoring the road to its previous condition”, asserted Akan Das who runs a shop in H.P.B.Road. “The below standard condition has majorly hampered the business of the proprietors of the area. During monsoon, the flood water runs into the shops and the storage facilities which also cause in loss of goods. The major reason of the area remaining underdeveloped is that there are not many residents, thus no initiative has been taken up so far for which the business owners are being victimised. Even when DC, M Angamuthu visited the place few days ago, none of the residents came forward to discuss the problems faced in the area”, Das added. Among other major reason that has been of concern of the people of the area is the ill construction of one of the building beside the drain that has illegally covered a major part of the drain leaving the drain upto only four feet in breadth. “The property has been a matter of conflict among the buyers and sellers since its faulty construction. The building has been illegally constructed beside the drain that has

A temporary solution was carried out by soiling the road with stone dust, which did not last long due to the heavy vehicles travelling on the route for most part of the day. Also to avoid the water logging during monsoon, regular cleaning of the drain is being carried. Ashima Bordoloi, Councilor

also taken up a major part of the drain. It is still a matter of debate how was the permission issued by the authorities to carry out such construction”, said Hari Beriwal, a resident of H.P.B.Road. Even though the cleaning of the drain is being carried out on a regular basis but the garbage collected from the drains remain stacked beside the road. Besides, the GMC officials as alleged by the people of the area do not carry out with the work sincerely.

Councilor’s say Talking to GPlus councilor Ashima Bordoloi asserted, “The road has been handed over to FDR (Flood Disaster Relief) fund which is due to be sanctioned. The below standard condition of the area is in my consent attention regarding which a temporary solution was carried out by soiling the road with stone dust, which did not last long due to the heavy vehicles travelling on the route for most part of the day. Also to avoid the water logging during monsoon, regular cleaning of the drain is being carried.” “Although the road has been handed over to FDRF, the development process would not be delayed and would be constituted as soon as a fund is sanctioned as areas such as H.P.B.Road and Solapara are on the priority list. Moreover, departments such as GMC, GMDA and PWD are working their best towards the development of the city as their central concern is to reach more people at all levels of society”, Bordoloi said, adding “Also a major drawback in the development process is the lack of initiative from the people of the area. These day the authorities can be easily reached and through an initiative from the people boosts the authorities to work better in their consent.” kalyan.deb@g-plus.in

UMANANDA

A HERITAGE SITE STILL LACKING BASIC AMENITIES

KALYAN DEB

T

he Umananda temple, located on the Peacock Island, is one of the important temples of Guwahati and a popular tourist destination. Situated in the middle of River Brahmaputra, this temple is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. During the festival of Shivratri, every year, a large number of devotees from all parts of the state as well as the country visit this place to seek blessing from the blue throated god.

Legend

Legend has it that Lord Shiva executed Kamdev (God of Love) at the Bhasmachala Hill and turned him into ashes with his wrathful eyes, when he and his wife Rati tried to disturb Lord Shiva during his deep meditation. Hence, the hill where the temple is located, came to be known as the Bhasmachala Hill. The Kalika Purana states that Urvasikunda is situated here and here resides the goddess Urvasi who brings Amrit (nectar) for the enjoyment of Kamakhya and hence the island is also called Urvasi Island. The temple also has representations of Surya, Ganesha, Shiva and Devi (with a scorpion as emblem) in addition to those of Vishnu and his ten incarnations.

Brief history

It is said that during the Dwapara Yuga the hill was connected to Guwahati, then known as Pragjyotispur when a local merchant first build a temple here. The merchant, owned several cows, one of which was named Kamdhenu. The cow used to roam about without the consent of the merchant and returned home every evening. Out of sheer curiosity, the merchant traced the whereabouts of the cow and found that it used to visit the Aegle marmelos tree, commonly known as bael tree and used to milk it. After digging out the tree the merchant found a Shiva Linga underneath. On the same night, the merchant had a dream where Lord Shiva visited and instructed him to reconstruct a shelter at the same place since he interrupted the lord’s meditation in the form of a Shiva Linga. The same night a massive earthquake took place which causes the transfiguration of the Bhasmachala Hill to the smallest river island as the world knows it today. The next day the merchant travelled to the island and constructed a temple at the exact spot where the Shiva Linga was found.

Years later in the Dwapara Yuga, King of Kamrup, Narakasura constructed the temple with stones but was later demolished by Kalashandha, son of a Brahmin. Kalashandha was banished by the Hindu community after he married a Muslim girl. An outraged Kalashandha, out of sheer anger demolished several old temples of Assam including the Lord Shiva temple in Bhasmachala Hill. In the year 1616, while there was Mughal rule in Delhi, Ahom King Gadadhar, the ruler of Assam constructed the temple from its demolished state. “Since there were no priests in the temple, King Gadadhar called in Sadanand Acharya from Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh and entrusted upon him the responsibility of the temple. Later, the Acharya beckoned priests from Heloka village in Nalbari and another family from Pasoya in Kamrup district. The legacy of the Brahmin families has been carried out since then.

Current scenario

Although the temple infrastructure has been developed over the years, there are several inconveniences such as poor electricity supply and drinking water that has been causing problems for the visitors and the priests. According to a state government norm, the tax collected from the allotted land to the priests would be implemented for the maintenance of the temple, but though the tax collection on a yearly basis is still initiated, the fund is not received by the temple committee. Apart from the

rightful amount, since the past 12 years, no fund has been received from the government for any development purpose. The Assam Energy Development Agency had implemented a project to light up the temple using solar energy few years back, but the solar batteries and lamps supplied to the temple management have now become almost defunct and the temple plunges into darkness soon after the sunset.

In the recent past, the Kamrup (metro) district administration said that several measures would be initiated to give a facelift to the Umananda temple and the island to make the place more tourist-friendly. The Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), with the assistance of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and the Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) was directed to take steps

to clean up the area around the temple, repair routes and beautify the place with ceramic tiles and greenery, which are yet to be executed. “DC (Kamrup) M Angamuthu visited the island and interacted with people here and came to know about the long standing lack of drinking water on the island and indicated the development of the island,” said Bipin Sarma, a priest of the Umananda temple. “Also G.V.K.N. Bhanu, Principal Secretary to chief minister of Assam visited the place in the recent past and indicated towards solving the problem of drinking water and water tanks have been installed in the backyard of the temple”, Sarma said, adding, “Only one GMDA official has been allotted for the maintenance and cleanliness of the temple premises.” The island is under maintenance of a union body which includes several members of which the secretary is elected among the priests of the temple. The president of the committee is the deputy commissioner himself but has allotted a circle officer who has been given the responsibility of the committee president. The only way to reach this temple is to board ferries to cross the river. These boat services are available from the Kachari Ghat. The ferry services remain available from 7 am in the morning to 5 pm in the evening but vary during the winter season depending upon the sunlight.

Money

Categories of Retirement Savings Ensure your money work as you ease into your golden age

ROHIT SARAWGI Independent Financial Advisor

M

any people, who belong to the happy generation who started earning in the post 1991 era, are financially well placed but unsure about financial planning. Several have built wealth over time, and navigated the world of investing to the best of their abilities. What should one know about personal finance at this stage of their careers? First, it is important to recognise the peaking of one’s income. A middle-aged professional should recognise that the return on the human asset is subject to risks, which can increase with age. Retirement is the most obvious risk, but economic cycles can create issues of job loss, retrenchment and lower increments etc.. Professionals like sportspersons, film stars, doctors, architects etc. may find that younger people encroach into their domains and render them less valuable. Poor assessment of future income has led many yesteryear such professionals to live in oldage penury. While some professions may be based on reputation built over a lifetime, others may not be able to attract a consistent clientele with age. Not everyone finds an alternate profession easily. Second, one should clearly understand the damage inflation can inflict over long periods of time. The key thing to remember is that the ‘safe’ bank deposit will provide a fixed and flat interest income, while expenses will compound over time at the rate of inflation. If the calculations are too complex to comprehend, a simple thumb rule can be applied: at an estimated inflation of 7-8 per cent, expenses will double every 9-10 years. This means the targeted corpus should double every 10 years for one to stay above water. A proper financial planning can only help in reaching the target. Let us analyze certain key ways to overcome this: First, save as much as possible in your income generation period as in this period one’s income is higher than the expenses. Second, the savings has to be invested in such a manner that it grows at least at the rate of inflation. At 50, one has already accumulated a sizeable wealth and have also reached the peak of his / her career. Put this accumulation to work for a later date when income falls and expenses move up. Third, take a hard look at the assets and allocate them for future use. If you have a house that you live in, and a few deposits, shares and mutual funds, map these assets to your

I

t’s never too late or early to start planning for retirement. Regardless of the type of plan you choose, review your plan regularly and understand all the terms. If you are currently employed, you’re probably already contributing to your retirement. Employer retirement plans can also decrease your taxable income. Even if your employer provides a retirement savings plan, it might be beneficial to open your own personal account to increase your available funds.

Defined Benefit Plans

Defined benefit plans are common in the public sector and were common for many years. Employees who have these plans receive a certain amount of money per month during their retirement, called a pension. In a defined benefit plan, the amount of money you receive during retirement depends on how long you work for the company and your total earnings before retirement.

Defined Contribution Plans

needs. The house will save you rental expense in the future. The other assets should also have an identified use like, child’s higher education and marriage, personal holidays etc., your need for investment income when regular income falls, and your need to leave behind assets for your children. Every asset should have an identified purpose and a possible time at which it will be liquidated or given away. If you leave your spouse with a large house and no income when you are gone, you may not have provided sensibly, even if that was your intention. Write down what you own and how you plan to use it. If the rent from your second house is supposed to fund your travels, put it down. Fourth, investments can be divided into three portions. The core portfolio is something that will be required during the living period, and its only purpose is to satisfy one’s needs. After estimating the expenses, adjusted for inflation, as given in the above-mentioned steps, one should ensure that the funds that generate this core expense are put in this bucket. Land and property, ornaments, the PPF, PF, Bank Deposits, Saving Certificates, SCSS and every other safe asset that will generate an income should be here. If you need an income that grows with inflation, this component should double every 10 years. Since it is safe and generates income, it won’t appreciate in value. You have to invest in it and augment

If you leave your spouse with a large house and no income when you are gone, you may not have provided sensibly, even if that was your intention.

add, the investment here depends on how well the investments in the other two components have been allocated. Fifth, planning should be done for every 10 years of life. At 40, consider the above four points and a periodic review is required on the above. Proper mapping of income, expenditure, savings and investments has to be done till the age of 50. One should always look for scope for saving more and more. At the same time reducing or eliminating borrowings.

this core component as long as you live. After all these, the requirement of the next bucket comes — wealth portfolio. This represents the risky portfolio. Investments here grows in value over time, but may be volatile in the short term. Equity shares, mutual funds and second property come in here. Without this portfolio, the core portfolio will struggle to fight inflation. If the PPF account earns 8 per cent and returns from equity investments is 15 per cent over a 15-year period, the equity component helps the investments last longer and enables to save lesser than that needed were you to depend only on the PPF. Another investment bucket is the fancy portfolio. This holds exotic or rather more riskier investments. Equity, Derivative and Commodity Trading, Buying and Selling assets tactically, or indulging in private equity and art, and other such asset class forms the part of it. Needless to

One should try to build assets that will cover at least the current expenses until the age of 50. Whatever is excessive, should be parked in the wealth portfolio. If everything goes well at 40, core assets will protect from job loss, and further the investments in wealth portfolio have enough time to grow in value. Enhancement in the wealth portfolio can be done periodically as and when any surplus is there. From 60 onwards, one can start transferring funds from wealth to core portfolio to maintain day to day lifestyle. By the time one reaches 70, proper evaluation of the wealth portfolio is required. By 80, proper accumulation of all the spread out investments has to be done. Conclusion, all the ways and means mentioned above to reach one’s financial target are based on hypothetical data. However, one should try to have disciplined and informed investments with proper guidance under an expert.

Unlike a defined benefit plan, the amount of money you receive from a defined contribution plan depends on how much you contributed to your investment account. Types of defined benefit plans include the 401(k), 403(b) and 457 plans. Employees have a good deal of freedom with a defined contribution plan and can usually choose among mutual funds, bonds and stocks provided by the plan administrator.

Personal Retirement Savings

You can also use your own funds to set up a retirement plan. Opening an IRA is a common way to save for retirement. A traditional IRA lowers your taxable income and grows tax-free until you retire. A Roth IRA is similar, except that it does not lower your taxable income. Unlike a traditional IRA, contributions to a Roth IRA are taxed during the year you earn the income, while distributions are not taxed after retirement as long as they meet certain conditions.

Social Security

Social Security is not voluntary or able to be changed, but it does add some money for retirement. Although Social Security may provide some of your retirement income, you shouldn’t depend on it as a complete funding source. It has been observed that significant changes are needed to be made to the current Social Security system to account for longer life expectancy, later retirement age and slower investment growth rates.

You’re a Beautiful Person

Tom Walsh

I

wish that I could tell every person that I meet that he or she is a beautiful person--and have them believe it. I wish I could look them in the eyes and tell them of their beauty and have them accept the words for what they truly are-the truth, plain and simple. You know what I mean, don’t you? You and I both know that most people will deny their beauty, expressing what they feel is modesty or humility. It’s easier for us to be told that we’re talented or intelligent--our own beauty is something that we don’t want to face. You could help me to convince people of their innate beauty. You could agree with me in an effort to reinforce the message. You could give a few specifics to illustrate just what we’re talking about when we say the person is beautiful. You could reassure the person that I’m not saying it to flatter or to try to win the person over or get something out of the person, but just trying to express in words the beauty I see when I look into that person’s eyes and see the human being there, the person who gets happy and hurt and who laughs and who cries. You can help me by reminding the person that beauty isn’t about comparing ourselves with

others, but about the part of us that shines when we love others and love life. It’s not all physical and it’s not all spiritual, but a tender combination of all that we are. And when that person says, “No, not me,” you could argue the point and ask him or her not to talk down about him or herself, to admit to the beauty that’s there, to accept it, to thrive in

it. Because you know just as well as I do that this person can hurt his or her own self-image and feelings by denying the beauty. So I ask you: Please help me to convince people of their own beauty. Will you do that? Thank you. And we’ll start right here, with you: You’re a beautiful person. The rest is up to you.

I AM ANGELICA

M

y name is Angelica, though this is not my real name. It’s a name given to me by the man who I love very passionately and who loves me more than I do him. I was born in a small hospital in a small town run by a dedicated Anglo-Indian doctor, or so my mother said. Mother said it was a cold January night of pain and angst when she delivered me and she could see patches of blood splayed all over the doctor’s white coat, even though the lights were dim and she was almost passing out, while he deftly tried to wriggle me out of her. The doctor and the nurses assisting him kept telling her that everything was fine when actually it was not. Mother didn’t deliver me normally. No, you shouldn’t think it was a Caesarean but it was a breech delivery. A Wikipedia definition of a breech delivery means the birth of a baby, in which the baby exits the pelvis with the buttocks or feet first as opposed to the normal head-first presentation. This process presents some hazards to the baby during the process of birth. Mother thought she wouldn’t live to see me but she fought a war raging in her head; a war of voices telling her that if millions of women have become mothers, why not her too? And she survived. Father was elated the next morning when he saw me, cuddling me close to his heart when his turn came. All this is just besides the point of what I want to say. I love the colour red. I have always loved it. Red has attracted me like no other colour. It’s beautiful. I can almost always touch the beauty of red as it radiates energy, love, elation, passion

and so much more. It is life itself. A radiance, a shine I find in no other colour. I love the fact that red is the colour at the end of the spectrum opposite to violet, next to orange. But my loving the colour red was always looked at dispassionately by mother, who never ever stitched me the red pinafore I wanted to wear. When I asked her what was her justification for not letting me wear red, when every other friend from class has been wearing something or the other in red, she promptly told me that it was ‘too bright’ and ‘not good’ for me. However, at 16 she stitched me a red blouse with a flouncy chiffon skirt. I was elated. My affinity for red grew as I grew older, though this time around, I didn’t feel the happiness I attached the colour with when I was small. I had never seen the colour of blood. Is it black, blue, pink or yellow? I wish I knew. The other day someone told me, “Don’t be silly! Don’t you know the colour of blood? It is red?” But is it? I always associated red with life. Red means love. Red was the colour of the sun in my painting which I especially did for Dad when I was four years. Red was the colour of my ribbons I wore in my hair to school. Red is the colour of the gown I have been dreaming to wear for that dance with my beau. Red is the bindi I wear on my forehead. But ofcourse, red is the colour of life. Red is the colour which courses through everyone’s veins. Red is the colour of my glass bangles. Red is the rose blooming in my neighbour’s garden. But recently, I have been seeing too much red. A red which I didn’t like at all!

Since when has red started pouring from the throat of a Shia as a Sunni slits it open? Is it the same colour which was splayed all across the floors and walls of the school where terrorists wearing suicide jackets gunned down more than a 150 students in Peshawar? What was the fault of all those innocent people in Mumbai who were randomly and recklessly gunned down with AK-47s by terrorists in 2008 where more than a 170 lay in pools of red? What was the fault of my people who died in red all across the state of Assam in 2008, planned by the very same people who call themselves Assamese? Did Damini know she would be defiled in red when she was raped in a moving bus in Delhi? And this is not the end of the story of red. It continues everyday between friends, families, neighbours across the world inside their very homes. Boko Haram, ISIS, Taliban, terror groups working closer home and all your comrades around the World, if you’re listening, I want to tell you that I love the colour red. It is the most beautiful colour ever. But I like it on my forehead, on the dresses of beautiful girls, on my shoes, on the cheeks of little children, on flowers and cherries. I definitely don’t like it on a gaping wound of a helpless child, on the mutilated body of a young girl and on anyone who is at your mercy. My name will always be Angelica and I will always love the colour red!

Know Yourself to Experience Joy

H

ave you ever thought what the purpose of your life is? What is life all about? These questions are very precious. When these questions dawn in your mind, only then your life begins. These questions help you improve the quality of your life. But, when these questions come into your mind, do not be in a hurry to get an answer. Those who know will not tell you and those who tell you, do not know. These questions are the tools by which you can dig deeper and the answers come from within you. To know what you are on this planet for, find out what you are not here for. You are not here to grumble, you are not here to complain or blame. This will help you learn how to be happy in life. Life involves ups and downs which is very natural. Do not be afraid of this. Make your smile cheaper. Learn to smile more. You know what happens when you smile? All the muscles in your face relax. The nerves in your brain relax, and you get the confidence, courage and energy to move on in life. Enthusiasm is the nature of life. Take every opportunity to praise others and support their enthusiasm, this makes life lively. If you put down other’s enthusiasm, the same may happen to you. Become one whose enthusiasm never dies. Any joy you experience in life is from the depth of yourself, when you let go all that you hold on to and settle down. If for the whole day, you are engaged in only gathering information; you do not take out time for yourself to think and reflect. You feel dull and tired. The quality of your life deteriorates. So during the day, take out some moments for yourself. Sit for a few minutes, get into the cave of your heart, eyes closed, and kick the world away like a ball. Only when you are calm and pleasant inside can you spread it in your outside world. The higher goals in life can only be realised through a few minutes of meditation and introspection. The deeper you are able to rest, the more dynamic your performance will be and the more dynamic will you be in activity. All our struggles in life are to know more. There’s always something to share, learn and teach. Always be open to learn. Do not restrict and limit yourself. Communicate with others, share ideas, share information and seek the same. When you are centered, you become a powerful communicator. And when your communication improves, your life improves. You should plan your short and longterm goals. Then, life gets a direction to flow. Give yourself the freedom to dream and think big. Have the courage and determination to achieve those dreams that are dear to you. This world is varied and beyond our imagination. We are all born in this world to do something wonderful and unique; do not let this opportunity pass by. Start ‘living’ life rather than just existing.

Dying Light Movie review

Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Dhanush, Akshara, Rekha Director: R. Balki

A

mitabh Sinha (Bachchan) is a cantankerous alcoholic in Mumbai who once harboured dreams of becoming an actor, there’s Danish (Dhanush), a deaf and mute small-towner, who dreams of becoming a Bollywood superstar. He doesn’t have a voice, but what he lacks in vocals he makes up with his spirited approach. Bachchan has nothing going for him except his rich baritone. With the help of technology from Finland and a kind-hearted assistant director (Akshara Haasan), the two combine forces for a shot at stardom. They re-christen themselves as Shamitabh, a name with a gravitas that befits a star. What works in their favour is their bond that’s laced with jealousy and one-upmanship. It’s entertaining to watch them spar, especially Sinha who never misses an opportunity to belittle Danish with taunts like “it’s not your face they love, but my voice.” He even points out that Danish’s weight (all of 59kgs) is lighter than his voice and that there’s a disconnect between his bass and Danish’s face. The blows come fast ad powerful, but

Dhanush ducks it all with impressive earnestness. His transformation from a conductor to a matinee idol might seem all too easy, but his performance makes for a riveting watch. Bachchan, who is the picture of sobriety in real life, has no problems embracing this potty-mouthed, grimy, egotistic, whisky-guzzling geriatric. He even pulls off the idea of living in a shack in a graveyard with aplomb. Even Akshara Haasan does a commendable job of playing a feisty, ambitious assistant director who often acts as their mediator. The scene in which she sits them down like two school kids in a nursery room and convinces them to put their egos aside puts a smile on your face. While the performances is what makes Shamitabh engaging, there are moments in the film that seem to drag and drive home the ego-clashes again and again. It gets tiring and the climax gets unnecessary convoluted. At some point, the focus of the film becomes a commentary on the state of Bollywood films and how mediocrity thrives there.

G

oing out at night in Dying Light seems like a bad idea. Everyone warns you against it, and as the sun begins to set, your fellow survivors radio in to let you know it’s time to come home. Nighttime is something you “get caught out” in, not something you actively seek out. For braver runners, however, the rewards far outweigh the risks; for one thing, exploring at night imparts a huge XP boost, giving you quicker access to skills that can make fighting and parkour much easier. For another, it radically changes Dying Light’s feel, adding a stealth element as you work to avoid the attentions of the agile Volatiles (or “nightmares,” as one survivor calls them) that roam the streets of Harran after sundown. Now that I’m on my second

day of playing Dying Light and have gotten far enough for the day/ night cycle to become dynamic (instead of dictated by the story), testing the Volatiles is irresistible. For me, the core appeal of survival horror isn’t in jump scares, gore, or getting mauled by horrific creatures - it’s in the simple thrill of being chased by something hungry, dangerous, and tough (if not impossible) to kill. The Volatiles check all those boxes, and if you’re spotted by one, they’ll be at your heels in seconds, howling to attract more of their friends. The ensuing chases are fantastic, because trying to weave a high-speed path across Harran’s tall rooftops and dark alleys while your pursuers pant and scream behind you is a crazy, desperate rush that few games offer.

Security bug in WhatsApp shows private pictures to strangers

A

new security flaw has been discovered in WhatsApp that allows strangers to see users profile photos, even when set to be viewable to friends only, according to security researchers. The security bug was discovered by 17-year-old security researcher Indrajeet Bhuyan, and is a result of the phone app not being properly synced with the new web interface that WhatsApp launched recently. The bug allows people to see the profile photos of strangers, even after they have added the security settings for friends only. The web app also allows users to see photos that they would have deleted, while on the phone app, those photos get blurred out. Bhuyan had earlier found bugs in WhatsApp that made the app to crash on Android phones by sending a small message to users.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp has been ensuring users privacy and security remain a priority with the company. The popular messaging app recently introduced end-to-end encryption for its 700 million users. The company also introduced the web client in January this year. Many users were excited to respond to messages from their PC, but also received backlash for its limited compatibility and functions. Security expert Graham Cluley stated in a blog post, “Sure, it’s not the most serious privacy breach that has ever occurred, but that’s missing the point. The fact of the matter is that WhatsApp users chose to keep their profile photos private, and their expectation is that WhatsApp will honor their choices and only allow their photos to be viewable by those who the user has approved.”

All apps come with a limited set of features suited for students and occasional Office users. These new Office apps will also let you collaborate with coworkers or friends in real time. Later this year these new Office apps will come pre-installed in devices running Windows 10. In addition to this, Microsoft also announced that it is simultaneously working on the next version of its Office suite, ‘Office 2016’ which will coming later this year as well.

icrosoft has released touch friendly universal Office apps for Windows 10. These apps are now available for Windows 10 Technical Preview and are available as free download from the Store (beta) app. Word, Excel and Powerpoint preview are available as separate downloads. Microsoft has also assured that the same apps will be coming to tablets and phones running on Windows 10. RGV tweets in support of Karan T Johar he AIB Roast controversy has been gathering steam with the Maharashtra government and the Mumbai police, both initiating separate investigations into the event and its content. Meanwhile, the organizers of the show have been at the receiving end. In fact, the host of the show Karan Johar too had to face the music with comments being made on his intentions of doing the show. However, as a silver lining, his one-time ‘twitter’ enemy, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma surprisingly came out in support of Karan Johar this time. In fact RGV took to twitter posting a series of tweets in support of AIB and Karan Johar saying, “The AiB show is final proof that India has finally come of age

on the show, RGV added, “What everybody knows, everybody feels Karan had the guts to spearhead and also that he did it in that kind of style and intensity I am blown. What books, sociologists, scholars couldn’t do in decades, Karan Johar did in 2 hours in a highly entertaining show and that too so simply.” In conclusion to his show of support, RGV went on to express his views about the show saying, “For me AIB is not a comedy show..its a k j’s philosophical treatise on uprooting a hypocritical society and to grow an all new one. Whoever reacting negatively on AIB r just 2 bit dirt cheap publicity mongers who r Just trying 2 get in their own 2 bit reflected light of AIB.”

and I truly appreciate Karan for taking the plunge or more correctly the leap.” Further talking about Karan, RGV added, “Karan took the lid off of a volcano of lies and hypocrisies and history will remember him as the guy who invented a new india. Anyone who condemns Karan’s AIB Show whether from government or various organisations are just the figure heads of repressive regressions.” Later talking about the show itself, RGV posted, “The sheer popularity of the AIB also shud b a call to the censor board to wake up smell the coffee and look out of the window at a new India. I feel what Karan did in AIB in time will most certainly have an irreversible Before Karan/After Karan effect on the way India looks at itself.” Expressing his views on the guts Karan Johar had to appear

Shocking AIB members double crossed the authorities

A

s per the recent reports pertaining to “AIB Roast” investigation suggest that after going through the script of the filthy show cops have found that the script which AIB submitted to the Maharashtra Stage Performance Scrutiny Board wasn’t the one which was enacted on the stage during the live performances. MSPSB is a monitoring en-

tity which keeps a check on the quality of content to be served during the stage performances and as per protocol every stage performer needs to have around 14 permissions from this statutory body before going ahead with any live show. And as per reports AIB sought all those permissions before going ahead with the show, but on some different script.

After comparing the two scripts, the one which AIB people submitted to MSPSB, and the one which roasters performed on the stage investigating agencies have made some really shocking revelations which up till some extent are hinting that AIB intentionally changed the script during the live show and kept MSPSB in dark about the content of the Roast show.

sourced ingredients, all lovingly created by the chef and his team whose passion for their gourmet art is obvious. Apart from the truly outstanding food, a trademark of every Barbeque Nation food festival is the ambience. A lot of effort goes into coming up with the perfect setting that can creatively capture the mood of the event. For the sea food festival, the décor

would be designed in such a way to give feeling of actually being submerged in an underwater world. So the ambience will be as much of an inviting proposition as the food itself. Barbeque Nation also offers an amazing selection of wines and liquors, to get into the spirit of things. Starters will be served on the table, with a live grill. The rest of the sea food will be as a buffet. The dessert table will leave the sweet-toothed satiated, with a choice of nine delicious items including kulfi, icecream, rasgulla, pastries, cheesecakes and more. What’s more, the recipes behind the signature dishes will also be available at the table. So after having had the fill of the choicest seafood offerings, one can try their hand at them at home. However, looking at the popularity of the event, the management has hinted it advisable to make bookings in advance. Visiting Barbeque Nation for dinner before 7pm from Wednesday to Sunday may get a special early bird offer.

Your weekly dose of Aries

TIMEPASS

Taurus

This week you’ll be in sync with a relaxed and carefree energy that includes time spent with friends. Turning on the charm helps you promote your personal interests. Yet no matter how much socializing you do or how much time you spend with a love interest, you may cherish time spent alone. You’ll benefit from relaxing and the chance to reflect on what’s ahead. Friday might see you out and about and eager to enjoy yourself as the weekend mood takes over.

Leo

Sagittarius There’s plenty of opportunity to beautify your home and invest in items that add to its character and atmosphere. With Mars currently in Pisces, think about clearing out clutter and creating more space for creative activities. Avoid signing important contracts or deals right now, as Mercury continues retrograde. Research your options and do the groundwork in the meantime. Should you find yourself in communication overload with calls to make and e-mails to write, switch off and take it easy.

SUDOKU

HOROSCOPE

Gemini

If you have a certain relationship issue on your mind now, you’d do best to put it aside and focus on your work and career goals. There’s a good chance that things will straighten themselves out by the weekend. Meanwhile, your social life amps up a notch. You may find that getting out this week helps to clear your mind of worries, especially if a pal has some advice. Later, a domestic project may need a little push to get it going.

Virgo

Inspiration, creativity, and snappy ideas can’t fail to ignite your passion for your particular skill or ability. The current alignment encourages you to brush up your talents, particularly as they may earn you some extra cash. Later, you’ll be eager to discover new outlets for entertainment and pleasure. As the week gathers pace, your “lucky” feeling is probably quite real, so take a chance and see what turns up. Sunday could be intense, though, so avoid petty arguments if you want to relax.

Fun

You start with plenty of energy to put into social- and career-related options. It seems your calendar is filling up, making weekend plans and your anticipation of them rather exciting. One relationship in particular could take a turn for the better, perhaps because you’re willing to work hard on it. Even so, the presence of Saturn in Sagittarius hints that where business is concerned, a stable partnership is now very possible, contributing to your success.

Cancer Financial concerns might slow you down, yet the urge to explore new options and expand your horizons is strong. Where finances are concerned, this is a great time to look into ways to make your money work harder for you. Bright and inspirational ideas could be lucrative if you’re willing to try. However, you’ll also be eager to sample new experiences, which might mean you’re open to travel plans. If you need a chance to relax, then make a start.

Libra

Apply yourself at work and regarding your daily routines and you’ll reap your reward. Mercury’s retrograde phase in your lifestyle sector hints that it’s a good time to review your diet and exercise regimen. If you’re not getting the results you want, think about hiring a personal trainer or joining a gym where you can get expert advice. Avoid taking on too many other responsibilities this week. Give yourself a chance to think things through and make a few decisions.

Capricorn

Scorpio

This week’s Full Moon in your social sector can kick-start this Valentine’s month, bringing sizzle and fun your way on Tuesday. Feelings may be very intense, with a lively vibe showing up, too, so don’t be surprised if a delightful encounter knocks your socks off. However, at work it might be hard to distinguish flattery from sincerity, so weigh someone’s words up carefully before you respond or commit. Your creativity can net you many assignments if you’re looking for new clients.

Progress is now possible in the public arena, whether it involves a career objective or other high-profile project. This week’s Full Moon in Leo encourages you out of your shell. It’s time to let people know what you think and make a stand. Look into repairs at home, housework, and generally setting things straight, especially in preparation for any upcoming parties or celebrations. Romance looks cozy, too, so enjoy the potential that’s showing up for you right now.

Aquarius

Your imagination can be a valuable asset this week. However, temper your creativity with the facts when communicating with neighbors, family, or friends, as a misunderstanding is possible. It also helps to go easy if buying big-ticket items while Mercury continues its retrograde phase. If you don’t need that new computer or car right now, it might be best to wait until Mercury pushes ahead once again. You’ll have a smoother purchasing experience. If you can’t wait, keep receipts and paperwork.

You’re entitled to your opinion, as are others. But this week make sure you have your facts straight or you could end up in an unpromising tangle. As Mercury continues its retrograde phase, this is no time to give yourself the benefit of the doubt. This week’s Full Moon could send shivers of delight through a relationship as feelings spill out into the open. Friday holds potential for a date night with a difference, especially if you’re seeking excitement and camaraderie.

Pisces Luck seems to come out of nowhere, as an opportunity to prove yourself or show what you can do could enhance your image or bring recognition. At any rate, you have reason to feel good! When it comes to your love life, feelings are deep and complex, which is why you might have trouble communicating with a significant other. If you don’t make this into a problem, you can go on to have a lot of fun with that special person.

Useful Life Hacks USE A POST-IT NOTE TO CLEAN YOUR KEYBOARD No matter how clean you think you are, dust and crumbs always manage to find their way onto your computer or laptop keyboard. A simple way to clean these up is by using the glue on the back of post-it note. Just dab the glue side on your keyboard and start lifting away all the little dust particles from in between your keys. A loop of tape would probably work well for this too.

JUST FOR LAUGHs A husband and wife are trying to set up a new password for their computer. The husband puts, “Mypenis,” and the wife falls on the ground laughing because on the screen it says, “Error. Not long enough.”

A policeman pulls a man over for speeding and asks him to get out of the car. After looking the man over the policeman says, “Sir, I couldn’t help but notice your eyes are bloodshot. Have you been drinking?” The man gets really indignant and says, “Officer, I couldn’t help but notice your eyes are glazed. Have you been eating doughnuts?”

Catching Up

Your make-up products can be riskier than you ever thought

T

his is your worst nightmare coming true. Your make-up products can put you at risk of early menopause! Chemicals in lipstick, face cream and nail varnish can speed up the process by four years, according to a study. The study examined the effects of 111 chemicals on 31,575 women. As many as 15 different chemicals were identified as harmful by a team of researchers at Washington University and among them were phthalates, which are used to soften plastics. They are found in food packaging and household products, including perfume, lipsticks, body wash, hair care products and nail varnishes. The scientists analysed the levels of 111 chemicals in the blood and urine of the 31,575 women who took part in the study.

Diet pill that tricks body into losing weight

G

ood news for all those who want to lose weight this year. Scientists have made a diet pill which tricks your body into thinking you just ate. Salk researchers have developed a more effective pill that makes the body

feel like it has consumed calories, causing it to burn fat. The compound effectively stopped weight gain, lowered cholesterol, controlled blood sugar and minimized inflammation in mice, making it an excellent candidate for a rapid transition into human clinical trials. Unlike most diet pills on the market, this new pill, called fexaramine, doesn’t dissolve into the blood like appetite suppressants or caffeine-based diet drugs, but remains in the intestines, causing fewer side effects. Ronald Evans, senior author of the new paper said that the pill is like an imaginary meal, and sends out the same signals that normally happen when a person eats a lot of food, so the body starts clearing out space to store it. But there are no calories and no change in appetite.

Buddhists claim mummified monk is ‘not dead, just meditating’

T

he senior Buddhists have claimed that the mummified monk found in Mongolia on 27 January is in a deep meditative trance and not dead. The body was found wrapped in cattle skins and sitting in a lotus position, after being stolen by a man hoping to sell him on the black market. Scientists have yet to determine how the monk was so well-preserved, though some think Mongolia’s cold weather could be the reason. Ganhugiyn Purevbata, who is the founder and professor of the Mongolian Institute of Buddhist Art at Ulaanbaatar Buddhist University, said: ‘Lama is sitting in the lotus position vajra, the left hand is opened, and the right hand symbolizes of the preaching Sutra. ‘This is a sign that the Lama is not dead, but is in a very deep meditation according to the ancient tradition of Buddhist lamas’.

Mila Kunis

‘Amazing’ New Cleavage

M

ila Kunis is amazed by her new postpregnancy figure. The ‘Jupiter Ascending’ star - who gave birth to her and partner Ashton Kutcher’s daughter Wyatt in October admitted its taking time to get used to her curvy postpregnancy body as the formerly “flat-chested” star has started receiving attention over her cleavage. “I don’t know how to deal with them, because I’ve never had them. I always dressed for a flat-chested girl, and all of a sudden I’m busty... This is amazing to me. It’s like a whole new world. Men actually look at my boobs! I’ve never had that before”, she said in a talk show.

Addicted to TV? You might be depressed, lonely

B

inge-watching TV series such as “Game Of Thrones, “Breaking Bad” or “Broadchurch” is linked to depression and loneliness, says a recent study. People who suffer from low moods are more likely to spend hours or days viewing multiple episodes of their favourite programme online or on DVD. But by doing so they could neglect work, relationships and even their family. Researchers from the University of Texas in Austin said that binge-watching should no longer be considered a “harmless addiction” and that people should think twice before settling in for a long session in front of the TV as it can affect your health. They studied 316 people aged 18 to 29, asking how often they watched TV and how often they experienced negative emotions such as loneliness and depression. The team’s full results will be presented at the Conference of the International Communication Association in Puerto Rico in May.

However, lead researcher Yoon Hi Sung said that the findings should be a wake-up call. “Physical fatigue and problems such as obesity and other health problems are related to bingewatching and they are a cause for concern. When binge-watching becomes rampant, viewers may start to neglect their work and their relationships with others. “Even though people know they should not, they have difficulty resisting the desire to watch episodes continuously,” added Sung.
