T

he 100 feet tall bamboo idol of Goddess Durga at the Bishnupur Puja will be demolished if safety certificates are not secured before recreating it. The idol collapsed due to a storm on 17th September last. A source in District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) talking to G Plus said, “There are teams formed which will be inspecting the structures of various puja idols in the city and if they do not furnish the safety certificates from various departments, the structures will be demolished.” Specifically discussing about the Bishnupur Puja idol, the source said that the team has not yet inspected the structure which is being reconstructed by the Bishnupur Puja Committee but they have to produce all the required safety certificates failing which the structure will be demolished. Meanwhile Biren

Sarkar, marketing head of Bishnupur Sarvajanani Durga Puja Committee said that the district administration has ordered for safety certificates just two days back (on Wednesday) and so they are trying to procure all the required certificates and are hopeful that the new structure will adhere to all the safety norms. He said, “They should have asked for the certificates earlier.” The storm on 17th September was powerful enough to claim many lives across the state. On being asked why the committee was again taking such a risk, he said, “The structure is almost complete and it is going to be a pride for the city and the state.” He further said that this time there is no basement and the foundation of the bamboo idol is stronger, the height according to him should cross 95 feet this time and around 5500 bamboos will be used in total. He said that he is aware of the DDMA notice but the committee is trying to acquire all the certificates. n

utumn comes with several festivities. But, for jobless people like us, it only brings disappointment. If 99% of the demonetised currency has returned (to the banking system), then why don’t the jobs that demonetisation took away from us come back too?” asked Brij Bihari Mohan, 47, standing in a waterlogged lane outside his home in a slum cluster near Guwahati’s Paltan Bazar station. Mohan was referring to the Reserve Bank of India’s Annual Report released on August 30 that said that Rs 15.28 lakh crores worth of high denomination cash – Rs 1000 and Rs 500 – that were demonetised last November had returned to the banking system within eight months, that is, by June 30. About Rs 15.44 lakh crores was demonetised that accounted for 86% of Indian currency in circulation at that time. It took several weeks to print and distribute new notes causing a cash crunch that crippled the economy for months. The opposition parties led by the Congress have already called for a probe into the Prime Minister’s move to demonetise notes asking that a committee be set up and a white paper be presented in Parliament. The demonetisation move has also hit the pace of announcements of new investment proposals during the quarter ended December 2016. New investment proposals worth only Rs 1,25,000 crores were observed during the quarter ended December 2016 as against Rs 2,36,000 crores per quar-

ter on average in the preceding nine quarters of the Modi government, media reported the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) as saying. Councillor of Ward No 9, Rajkumar Tewari, who is also a businessman and a BJP member, talking to G Plus said, “After demonetisation, businessmen do not see business like before.” He said that earlier in Guwahati, cash used to be available with people and they could easily go to market and purchase whatever they wanted. But now things are different as everyone, including housewives has to deposit all their cash in the banks. Also, people are apprehensive about withdrawing money as they feel there might just be another law in the pipeline which could ask them to explain their cash expenditure. “With lesser liquid cash in the market, the manual labourers are getting hurt. Most of the construction and manual labour works, which are not essential, have been halted,” Tewari said. He said that the Centre might have spoken about cashless economy but there are many traders in Fancy Bazar who are not techno-savvy enough and are uncomfortable with cashless transactions. He said, “People have suffered because of demonetisation.” Another prominent business tycoon of the city, talking to G Plus in anonymity said, “Demonetisation has done no good to Guwahatians.” He explained that in Guwahati there

various business sections along with many others. Traders from Fancy Bazar and GS Road areas, which turn into the epicentre of trade activities days before Durga Puja and Diwali, said that several buyers left without

buying as they did not like the GST implemented higher rates of the products. Even though the demonetisation and GST impacts weren’t that hard on those who belonged to upper-

middle class sections or those who have government jobs, the lower-middle class, daily-wage labourers and those who lost their jobs during demonetisation are still limping and groping at normalcy. n

are two types of businessmen - one who are above 50 years of age and comprise the majority and the other are those above 20 years of age and are the minority. He said the majority of businessmen (above 50 years of age) are not technically literate and are apprehensive of relying on cashless transactions. The other section (20 year olds and above) is somehow coping up with the technology but are fed up of regular technical issues, link failures etc and finally have to end up with cash transactions. There are many families in the city who earn just enough to meet their day-to-day requirements and decisions like demonetisation have left them jobless. He questioned, “If the Centre had to spend crores on advertisements just to spread awareness about Swachh Bharat, how much will they have to spend to educate people on digital transactions?” He said the demonetisation has compelled many industries to shut down, unemployment has increased in the city and many other issues are cropping up. “If there’s no job for people or have got a job recently and are trying to meet the losses that

they incurred during demonetisation, we cannot expect them to celebrate festivities,” he added. Mohan, from Darbhanga District in Bihar, had spent 16 years working in a warehouse unit in Fancy Bazar and used to stay in the slum that provides at least 30% of the manual

labourers of the city who hail mostly from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya PradeshandfewfromsouthernIndia. He was one of the 12 workers in the warehouse who were laid off after demonetisation.“We all are struggling to get a job for ourselves,” Mohan added. n Continued on page 3

t was patriotism that encouraged 26-year-old Sudhir Sahani to purchase the slightly over-priced Indianmadelightingsoverthecheaper Chinese lightings last Diwali. However, with the prices of the same rising higher post GST, Sahani doesn’t feel he can afford to purchase those in bulk any more. “The Indian lights are already four or five times costlier than those which aresmuggledfromChinaorMyanmar. Now with the implementation of GST, these are 28% costlier. We cannot afford such price rise. The only choices

we have are either to leave our house undecorated or purchase the Chinese goods. It would feel really bad to have our house undecorated while others will be well lit,” Sahani added. Sahani isn’t the only one who is compelled to make that choice. “Last year, we’ve had a very good sale of electrical goods. But now, since we don’t keep Chinese products, a lot of customers came and left without purchasing after hearing the GST implemented rates,” Rishu Ranjan Deka, a salesman in a electric goods store on GS Road said.

The wired lighting, that includes a series of LED bulbs of different colours, which are used for decoration purposes, are levied with 28% GST while only LED bulbs are levied with 12% GST. Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner, M. Angamuthu, on the other hand said, “Like last year, we will be wielding the axe on the illegal tradersofChinesegoodsandthosewho are selling illegally procured goods.” People’s plight, however, is not confined to electrical goods. Branded clothes accumulate to up to 17% of GST. “The GST on textiles is 5% and that of clothing above Rs 1000 are 12%. This accumulates to about 17%. The GST has brought uniformity in the taxation, but all the prices inclusive of the tax are at a higher rate. The companies have cleared their stocks through various sales last month and this month, with the puja season on, the rates have increased considerably more than what they used to be,” Rupesh Kalita, a salesman in Blackberry showroom at GS Road said. The eateries on the other hand are apprehensive of earning lower profits unlike previous years, as post GST the taxation has shot up to as high as 20%. “Earlier, inclusive of all taxes, we used to charge 14.5% to the people. After Narendra Modi came to power,

we had to add Krishi Kalyan Cess and Swacch Bharat Cess too which used to amount to 15.5%. Now after GST implementation, we have to charge 9% for Central GST, 9% for State GST and

2% more if the customer chooses to pay through card. I think people will eat at homeratherthancometorestaurants,” Bhabesh Kalita, manager of Khorika Restaurant said. n

Concern

SC de-mandates 6-month cooling off period in divorce Nehal Jain jain.nehal@g-plus.in

A

fter declaring triple talaq unconstitutional, now the apex court, in a judgment, has cut the waiting period for divorce by six months under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. In a big reprieve to couples who have approached courts for divorce, and who have no hopes of reconciling with their life partners, the Supreme Court (SC), in a path-breaking verdict delivered on Tuesday, September 13, said that the courts can, depending upon individual circumstances, waive the cooling-off period of six months after the couple file for divorce with mutual consent. Currently, under the Hindu Marriage Act, after a couple files for divorce claiming mutual consent, it has to wait for 18 months to actually get the divorce: 12 months of separation has to be established, followed by a six-month “cooling off” period that is intended to allow for reconciliation. Ruling that it is pointless to “perpetuate a purposeless marriage and to prolong the agony of the parties”, the Supreme Court today made a big change to the rules for Hindu couples looking to divorce. However, the SC has stipulated that this waiver is applicable only in case of mutual divorce applications, and under situations in which the couple find it impossible to live together. While some individuals are rejoicing over the decision calling it a good move, others feel that the six month coolingoff period is very essential and it should be waived off under special circumstances only. Advocate Baharun Saikia, talking to G Plus regarding the recent verdict said, “In my

File photo of Supreme Court of India

opinion, if a couple has come to court for mutual divorce, it means that they do not want to stay together and there’s no chance for them to reconcile. But still, the divorce should only be finalised after following legal procedures and it must be ensured that neither party has been forced to file for mutual divorce.” The High Court lawyer further added, “I’m in support

married off to a US-based boy without her consent. The girl expressed her views to the boy on their first night itself and they filed for a mutual divorce. The divorce was finalised within 3 days due to the special causes involved in the matter.” Meghali Kalita, a divorce lawyer at Family Court, Guwahati informed G Plus about the current trend of divorce in Guwahati saying, “There has

From January 1, 2017 to September 15, 2017, a total of 814 divorce cases have been registered at the Family Court, among which 215 cases are that of mutual divorce. of waiving off the 6 month long cooling period, but there must be a special cause for doing so. In a recent case registered in Family Court, Kamrup Metro, the 6 months’ waiting period had been waived off due to the circumstances – the Guwahati girl, settled in London with a desire to become a nun, was

been a tremendous increase in the number of divorce cases in Guwahati. Couples with petty issues that can be resolved over a short span of time have also started to file for divorces. But the most common reason behind divorces in Guwahati is extra-marital affairs. Apart from that, the common reasons

include economic condition of the husband, women’s infidelity and incompatibility.” It should be noted that between January 1, 2017 and September 15, 2017, a total of 814 divorce cases have been registered at the Family Court, among which 215 cases are that of mutual divorce. The numbers are expected to exceed 1,200 by the end of the year. These numbers do not reflect the total number of cases in the city, but only those registered in Family Court. The data is for Kamrup (Metro) only. Advocate Meghali Kalita further stated that the six month cooling-off period is very important because many a time the divorce is filed based on misunderstandings. In those six months and after the three sessions of counselling, the misunderstandings can be removed. “Unlike other cases where each lawyer wants his or her client to win, in divorce cases, we try to unite the couple. Even in front of the judge, we provide counselling to the couple,” she elaborated. She gave further reasoning as to why the six months period mentioned in section 13B (2) is important, “I’ve seen cases when the couple files for divorce over petty issues; they do not pay attention during counselling nor do they understand the importance of the cooling-off period and the divorce gets finalised. But after a few months or years of separation, they again get back together. Apart from that, I’ve also received cases where the couple writes a certain reason in their petition, but it’s during counselling, investigations and evidence period that we get to know of the real issues.” G Plus got in touch with another lawyer at the Family Court, Advocate Priyanka

Hazarika, who expressed her views over the verdict stating, “It’s high time that the laws for divorce are revised. The common mentality has become such that the citizens find divorce the easiest solution to get over with their fights. Marriage is a lifetime commitment, not a

How and whom does this apply to? 1. New rule affects couples seeking divorce through mutual consent only 2. 6-month waiting period after one year of separation not mandatory (necessary to establish 12 months of separation) 3. Judges can decide whether to waive off the 6 months coolingoff period after divorce petition has been filed with mutual consent 4. The same will not be applicable for contested divorce petitions

temporary phase and the court shouldn’t finalise the divorce unless and until the cases are such that they just cannot be resolved. We need stricter laws, especially for contested divorce (one-sided divorce).” Looking at the high number of cases being reported on a daily basis, indeed, stricter laws for contested divorce are needed. And now that the SC has ordered to ease the procedure for mutual divorce, wherein it’s for the judges to decide whether six month cooling-off period should be waived or not, we can only hope the waiver is given only after every effort has been made to save the marriage. n

Noonmati residents bracing up for another round of Visarjan-induced pollution G Plus highlights the Sector I residents’ trials and tribulations that recur annually at the idol immersion location and finds that the Visarjan leaves the area polluted on all fronts Avishek Sengupta avishek.sengupta@g-plus.in

Annual affairs with long term repercussions

artha Bora, a resident working in a private firm, does not mince words in expressing his displeasure over the existing state of affairs. “We have to install air purifiers in our houses and change the filters every two or three months. Harmful as it may be, but over time, we have somehow come to terms with the refinery’s pollution. But what we can resist, and we all should, is the pollution created during the immersion. Devotees, most of whom remain drunk, recklessly throw away plastic and other pollutants in and around the immersion site,” he said, anger writ large on his face.

He added, “Last year, after the BJP came to power, we hoped that the Swachh Bharat Mission would be strictly enforced but there has hardly been any effect here during the Visarjan of Durga Puja. And the same situation is found to get repeated.” The district administration, every year, unfailingly issues notices and guidelines to be followed during the Visarjan which are hardly followed by the devotees. Dhrupod Rajbongshi explained how the debris left behind causes a stink in the neighbourhood for several days. This apart, scavenging birds feed on the garbage for several days after the Visarjan. n

nce regarded as one of the most developed localities of the city, this ward is now synonymous withpotholedroadsstrewnwithstones and boulders that are yet to attract the attention of the administration.

Administration confident of lesser pollution this year verzealous devotees during the Visarjan, who have been a nuisance for many localities in Guwahati, could be greeted with a surprise if the administration really means what it has said. Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner, M Angamuthu, informed that all organising committees of the different Pujas in the city have been instructed to collect the garbage deposited during the immersion and dispose them at other designated locations on their own. “Officials from the deputy commissioner’s office will also accompany the processions to the immersion site. Anybody found flouting the guidelines will be penalised. The committees have been told not to play music during procession beyond the permissible range of loudness.” Ward Commissioner, Rajen Das, is upbeat that all steps would be taken to ensure that the guidelines are followed. He told G Plus that the issue was broached at a recent meeting with the deputy commissioner

However, like many wards in the city, Ward-22 has a long list of glitches that range from dilapidated roads, illegal encroachment by floodaffected people from Lower Assam to water crisis. The most distressing aspect in the locality

where the Mayor, Mrigen Sarania, was also present. “We will also keep a tab on the number of idols that are immersed in our locality. The registration of the puja committees will give us an estimate and it will help in enforcing the guidelines issued by the administration,” Das explained. He said that a few NGOs would also join hands with the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) to clean the immersion site after the event. On the pitiable condition of the roads, Das pinned the blame on the trucks but also said that he was in touch with the PWD for their repair. “This is one of the busiest routes in the city. Unlike in most parts of the city that witnesses a gradual slowdown of traffic activity in the evening, trucks keep moving throughout the night in Noonmati. So, putting a halt to the vehicular movement would make the refinery come to a standstill with no alternative route. That is why repairing the road in patches is the only solution.” n

The unsavoury experience of the road starts about a kilometre from the Public Works Department (PWD) office in Bamunimaidam towards Noonmatiwhichaggravatesatthearea near the refinery. “Approximately 300 to 400 oil tankers use this route every day. And

this has taken a heavy toll on the road. Since this refinery is a money spinner forthegovernment, itshouldalsobegin investing in roads and infrastructure. So far however, the government’s only activity seems to be to fill up the potholes when they grow too large,” Karim Ahmed, a shop owner said. n

What do the 10 hands of Goddess Durga symbolize? In the Hindu mythology, Goddess Durga is considered as one of the most powerful sacred figures. The prowess of Durga is depicted with her 10 hands holding different weapons and symbolizing various shaktis that humans possess. Her three eyes, signifying sun, moon and fire and the lion as her vehicle showcase her strength further. The form of Goddess Durga assures protection and safety to the devotees. Goddess Durga is ferocious to the demons and at the same time benevolent to her devotees. The ten arms of Goddess Durga symbolize that she protects her devotees from all directions - the eight corners and from the sky and the earth. The symbolisms of these weapons are as follows –

Sudarshan Chakra (discuss) - The beautiful Sudarshan Chakra (discus) which spins on the index finger of the Goddess symbolises righteousness or dharma. It is believed that the world is controlled by Goddess Durga and She uses this unfailing weapon to destroy evil and protect righteousness. Half bloomed lotus - The lotus in half bloom in the hand of Goddess Durga symbolises that though success is certain, yet it is not final. It also symbolises that as the lotus grows amidst mud, humans need to learn to evolve their mind spiritually even in the mud of the materialistic pleasures of the universe.

Thunderbolt - The thunderbolt in the hands of the Goddess symbolises firmness. It inspires the devotees that when faced with challenges, one must have the conviction of the thunderbolt to strike it without being affected. The Goddess empowers her devotee with unshaken confidence and will.

Abhaya Mudra - Abhaya Mudra means that one of the ten hands of Goddess Durga is always in the position of blessing her devotees. It emphasizes on the fact that She will always keep an eye on her devotees and never let them get trapped in fear.

Nehal Jain jain.nehal@g-plus.in

Sword - Sword symbolises knowledge and keen intellect. The glittering and shining power of the sword represents knowledge which is the most potent part of human existence and the fact that knowledge never gets rusted. You can win all the battles of the universe with the sword called knowledge.

Trishul (trident) - The ‘Trishul’ or the trident is the symbol of three qualities – Satva (salvation), Rajas (peace) and Tamas (serenity). One must have a perfect balance of all the three qualities in order to attain peace and salvation. It is believed that if any imbalance arises between the three, Her grace will give one the courage to fight the dark qualities.

Snake – The Snake is symbolic of moving from the lower state of consciousness to the higher state with an urge to experiencing bliss. Conch - The sound emanated from the conch shell is believed to be the most pure and sacred of all the sounds in the universe. The conch emanates the root sound of the universe “Om”. Therefore, the conch symbolises that the sound of God is dominant among all the sounds of this universe. Mace - It symbolises that humans should be loyal to the devotion of Goddess Durga and should make love, loyalty and devotion the touchstones of their lives. Whatever we do in our life we should put love and devotion to it and let go of the outcome as almighty’s will. Bow and Arrow - The bow and arrow are the symbols of energy. While the bow represents potential energy, the arrow represents the kinetic energy. As Goddess Durga holds both the bow and arrows in Her hands, it shows that She is the one who controls all the sources of energy in the universe.

Goddess Durga’s depiction in itself is the explanation of how humans should act in their lives in every situation. The presence of various weapons in her hands teaches us the way of life. From knowledge to wisdom to love and loyalty, she provides her benevolent assistance in every aspect of life. The celebration of Durga Puja is not merely limited to the gigantic stalls and statues of Goddess Durga. One needs to understand and implement the path that she urges to follow in the walk of life.

Themes take precedence to create awareness on various issues; pandals decorated accordingly Avishek Sengupta avishek.sengupta@g-plus.in

D

urga Puja, the 4-day festivity that earlier used to remain confined within the pandals of the local organizers and people hopping from one pandal to the other

to enjoy the festivities, has today evolved into a virtually commercial event, all thanks to people’s heightened expectations, deep pockets of a few contributors and

continued efforts of the organizers. In a bid to grab attention like last year, the organizers of several localities have lined up pandals based on various themes. Only this

time, the pandals are grander and the budgets higher. G Plus has compiled a list of the top five such Puja pandals that are a must visit.

Latasil Durga Puja Puja theme: One of Guwahati’s oldest and the one that receives the highest footfall, Latasil Druga Puja, in Uzanbazar, has gone gigantic this time. With a total height of 85 feet, the pandal depicts Lord Ganesha lying on a large hill over whom Goddess Durga can be seen standing. The idol, built on single structure, will be inside the pandal. Legacy: 35 years, Budget: Rs 16 lakhs

Santipur Sluice Gate Puja theme: The pandal in Santipur near Pragjyotish College will resemble the Pal Durga Bari (residential Durga Puja of the Pal family) in South Kolkata of West Bengal that will complete 140 years of organising the Puja. The pandal is being built in the form of the Pal’s bungalow and the Idol is also in the same way as they do. Also, as part of special attraction, the battle between Goddess Durga and Mahishasura will also be shown mechanically at the Pragjyotish College field. Legacy: 18 years, Budget: Rs 18 lakhs

Triangular Colony Theme: The Triangular Colony of Pandu has decided to bring up the Manipuri tradition, one of the oldest in northeast, in their artworks. The Idol will be 40 feet tall and accompanied by four other smaller (20 feet) idols of the other Gods. Besides that, other smaller idols, all adorned in Manipuri traditional clothing, will be seen in the mandap. There will also be several inscriptions of Manipur mythologies inside the pandal. Legacy: 18 years, Budget: 18 lakhs

Nayantara Durga Utsav Puja theme: In Nayantara, between Athgaon and Santipur, the organisers have chosen to address the perennial problem of floods and rhino poaching through paintings. The entire pandal will be adorned with massive oil paintings about people’s plight during floods in Assam and how rhinos are getting more endangered with unabated poaching. Legacy: 10 years, Budget: Rs 12 lakhs

Athgaon Durga Puja Puja theme: Having bagged the Best Jury Award last year, the Athgaon Sarvajanin Durga Puja Samiti, located adjacent to the Mission Hospital, has taken the concept of going green. The pandal is built with used bamboo to avoid pollution and the Idol will have such lighting arrangements that it will change colours that will give a 3D impact to the viewers. Legacy: 35 years, Budget: Rs 6 lakhs

In case the time to reach the scene is more than fifteen minutes then EMT will keep the caller informed about the expected time to reach. Areas under the corresponding police stations where accidents took place last year are provided and ambulances catering to those areas will be kept on maximum alert during the period of Puja. Mukherjee also said that they received many prank calls and therefore requested the people not to make any such calls which keep the line busy unnecessarily and people in emergency do not get the line for which they have to face many problems. n

nspired by the initiative taken up by the citizens of Mumbai to clean up Juhu beach post Ganpati Visarjan, two sisters from Guwahati have taken the initiative to clean Brahmaputra Ghat after Dashami in Guwahati. The two sisters, Pooja Poddar and Isha Poddar will be starting the cleanliness drive from MG Road, Brahmaputra Ghat Kinar at 7 am on 1st October. They’ll be cleaning the Sukreshwar Ghat and Kachari Ghat, with assistance from officials of the district administration. Talking to G Plus about the initiative, Isha informed, “Since it is an environment-friendly project, we plan to segregate the biodegradable and non biodegradable objects, including the dresses, jewellery and plastic wrappers. For that, we’ll be providing everyone with gloves, brooms and other materials required to clean up the area properly.”

DC Court disruptions

T

he haste with which we are plunging towards digitisation in all aspects and at the behest of the government often makes me wonder if the government itself is at all prepared for it. If recent incidents are to act as vouchers of my claim, I am inclined to say that the government cuts an extremely sorry figure. The DC Court is a case in point where all kinds of deed registrations are done digitally. The process involves scanning of documents that will be registered, scanning individual proofs of identity, biometric identification of signatories and capturing their images on a webcam. Manned by competent operators, registration of one deed normally shouldn’t take more than 20 minutes. And so, we Guwahatians have happily accepted this digitisation which allows us the liberty to take an efficient process for granted. Having parked our vehicles a fair distance away and having taken a long walk under the blazing sun, we indeed expect our work to get done within 30 minutes max. But sadly, that is where we go wrong. The huge footfall at the DC Court is often left sorely disappointed by the very digitisation which is

supposed to make life easier. Tuesday last, for example, was “link failure” day. People from the nooks and corners of Kamrup Metro reach the DC Court taking all the pains of travelling for their allimportant registration work – huge distances traversed through the traffic bottlenecks et al. These people, when leaving their homes, have no inkling that there might be a day-long link failure. Consequently, it results in the total wastage of one valuable day in their lives for no fault of theirs. The plight of the newly-weds wanting to register their marriage having secured that appropriate date on that fateful Tuesday was indeed pitiful; superstitious souls would call it a rather inauspicious start to their wedded life. Adopting technological advancement is a progressive thing to do. It’s the way forward. But the government needs to first shed its utter apathy and ensure proper functioning of this digitisation drive when forcing it on the unsuspecting citizen. For the moment, DC Court is nothing but a sad mess. Swapnil Bharali Editor

Art without Heart

tarting with an observation, it is sad that the excitement around the Bishnupur Puja idol is temporary. When I say temporary, I mean that the future generations in Assam will never get to experience this again. The weather played its part in generating some extra buzz for the artist and the entire project. But on hindsight, the artist will realize that this wasn’t a great piece of work, simply because ‘art is permanent’. The artists’ attempt at entering the Guinness World records is tragically unoriginal, something clearly derivative of a project executed at Kolkata last year by a cement brand. As the audience, I would have expected something more original and sustainable from him (even if it were smaller). Not discarding the fact that Nurudin Ahmed has set a wonderful example for communal harmony in such a polarized environment, I believe that it is the spirit of festivities that blurs the lines that we so clearly draw between people in other times. If the project aims to put Assam on the map, then I believe this is the laziest idea even I could have conjured myself. I believe that there are better (and smaller) things that could have been created and could have had a more profound impact by standing the test of time. Unfortunately, this could not even stand bad weather. Moving forward, I hope that artists (across all disciplines) work to create ideas worthy of national media coverage instead of cooking up things and beckoning people just for some...let’s say ‘footage?’ SIDHARTH BEDI VARMA

he word refugee literally means people who are displaced from their own home state and seeking asylum in another country. The reasons for fleeing one’s country may vary but generally it is seen that people mostly flee from their motherland due to torture and brutalities by the government. Presently, Rohingiya refugees fleeing from Myanmar to Bangladesh are making the headlines. There are instances in history books of Jews seeking refugee status in Nazi dominated Germany during WW2. The displaced Jews, after being settled in barren land of Israel post WW2, made Israel a powerhouse of the world. While the issue of giving shelter to Rohingiya refugees in India was rejected by the central government, the opposition Congress asked the government to look at the current plight of these people in a sympathetic light. One senior leader of APCC, Abdul Khaleque, through a press meet requested the government to show mercy to Rohingiya people by giving them shelter in India and he was even open to giving those people shelter in his constituency. But the same Congress objected to giving refugee status to Hindu Bangladeshis who too are suffering immensely in Bangladesh from the current government. These minority Hindu Bangladeshis too are seeking asylum in India. But the Congress leaders are firm in their opposition to giving any shelter to these people. Why is the Congress differentiating so much between the two sets of refugees? The answer is of course not that hard to seek as we all know the Congress party’s minority appeasement policy. n last week’s G Plus, I found an article on a drug peddler who was arrested. Drug abuse among the youths is increasing and this is the most unfortunate situation that the city is witnessing. But the government is silent on an issue that is silently killing the youths. The article published in your esteemed newspaper was very informative on the rising demand for heroin and brown sugar. It was good to highlight the issue but it might also prove dangerous for the youths as they now know the places from where the drugs come which will make it easier for them to access. Through this letter I also want to convey the message to the government that it is high time to take action on the drug menace. Also, schools and colleges should have counselling centres to help the students stay away from drugs. Arun Das, Kahilipara

In Focus

What are your expectations from government and society this Durga Puja? With pandals being set up at every major Puja venue, the city is gearing up to celebrate Durga Puja in full swing. Readers speak about their expectations this Durga Puja. Kalyan Deb Any festival, be it holy or of a different genre, has become a platform to stage hooliganism and public nuisance these days. Eve teasing, passing derogatory comments, honking, rash driving, these are a few things that we often become witness to during any festival. Since law keepers can only try to contain the situation, it is up to the people to try and be civilised - at least. Festivals are meant to be celebrated and it definitely should not be a tough task not to intrude into someone else’s peace. Meanwhile, proper maintenance of traffic will be a welcome move. Dibyajyoti Kalita From the government, I am expecting the proper, justifiable and equally applicable laws along with the effective traffic control measures. From society, my expectation is not to litter the city with waste materials but keep the city clean.

BK Mahanta Expectations from the government: Increase in public transport facility. I appeal to the public to use public transport instead of private vehicles. Proper traffic control is another expectation. Temporary shops should not to be allowed within a radius of 100 feet from each pandal. Expectations from the society: Use public transport and avoid private vehicles. Please maintain decorum. Please maintain strict discipline while entering pandals and keep the surroundings clean.

Mayur Singha No alcohol please! Strict action should be taken against drinking and creating unwanted and anti-social scenes. This is a common problem seen every year and it disturbs the Puja environment. Such situations often ruin the Puja mood and people often leave the Puja pandals due to the scenes created. So, proper action should be taken.

Dubori Deka This Puja I want people to enjoy to the fullest and not create scenes in public by drinking and behaving inappropriately. Moreover, I also want the police to look after the safety issues and the most important is the traffic problem. Huge numbers of vehicles are seen on the roads during Puja and parking is one of the major problems. So, proper management should be done to avoid any problems.

Sandeep Tiwari Congestion-free roads, ample parking spaces, better policing is expected from the administration. Seriously, this is the need of the times. Every year during Puja these are the major issues that local people have to face.

He has also been the artistic brain behind the Assam tableaus taken out during the Republic Day parade at New Delhi, from 2001-2005. He has been the art head of the team that represents Assam at the India International Trade Fair, from 2011. This artist has designed Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s statues at Lakhimpur, Sadia, and Bongaigaon, the statue of Lakshminath Bezbaroa, at Guwahati and the structure of Sukapha and Chilarai at North Lakhimpur. He made his first Durga idol at Lakhimpurin1975.Today,Nuruddin Ahmed is arguably the most talked about person in Guwahati, for his 100 feet tall bamboo structure of Goddess Durga that is all set to place the name of Assam in the Guinness Book of World Records. In his 7th year of association with the Bishnupur Puja committee, the excited artist said, “I am very happy about the kind of reaction and recognition the idol has been able to fetch. This work of mine is dedicated to the people of Assam.” In an unfortunate event, the idol, which was nearly 75% complete, collapsed due to a massive storm on 17th September. But that didn’t deter the confidence of the artist or his team. What followed thereafter was something that the city did not expect. Incessant hours of tireless work, determination to make the region shine and prayers of the people from across boundaries did

wonders – the idol is being rebuilt. Ahmed said, “We took every possible safety measure. But the cyclone was not expected. However, we have rebuilt the structure and this time we have tied the joints with belts, so that the idol doesn’t shake in anyway.” Thanking the Bishnupur Puja Committee he said, “The committee has become an integral part of my life now.” Not many cities are rich enough with talents like Nuruddin Ahmed. Longest street ‘Alpana’ brightens Kolkata street

n Bengal, Durga Puja festivities have begun already - and how! Shubho Mahalaya is being celebrated today to usher in Pujo, as it is called. The countdown to Mahasaptami begins from Mahalaya, and in keeping with the festive spirit, social media is full of people sharing messages on Mahalaya. To celebrate the upcoming Durga Pujo, about 400 people in Kolkata came together to create a huge ‘alpana’ or ‘rangoli’. Stunning pictures of the longest ‘alpana’ - it covers an entire street - have since taken over social media. The ‘alpana’ was unveiled by Bengali superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee as part of a corporate

initiative. “This was unveiled by Bengali superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee amidst the foottapping beats of Dhak and mystical sounds of the Shankh on this auspicious day of Mahalaya,” says a Facebook post. The ‘alpana’ was created on the 1.4 km stretch of the Lake Road. Pictures of the gorgeous rangoli, created especially for Durga Puja, are now all over the internet, and it has everyone swooning over it. Parliamentarian Derek O’Brein also tweeted a video of the ‘alpana’. “Kolkata getting into the Pujo mood already. Lake Road. See what college students did. Wow” he wrote. (Source: ndtv)

Around the world in 79 days: Cyclist smashes record

A

British cyclist set a new world record by travelling around the globe in 79 days - beating the fictional exploits of Phileas Fogg by a day. Scottish adventurer Mark Beaumont rode into Paris 78 days, 14 hours and 14 minutes after he set off from the French capital, smashing the previous record of 123 days for a round-the-world bike trip. Arriving in evening rush hour traffic under light drizzle, the 34-year-old rode the last cobbled mile to the Arc de Triomphe with a 20-strong entourage on wheels, including a man in a top hat on a penny-farthing bicycle. Some 50 supporters were at the monument to greet him, including his tearful wife Nicci and his daughters Harriet, four, and Willa, one.

“I doubt I’ll ever do anything like it again,” said Beaumont, describing the journey as “definitely the longest two-and-a-half months of my life”. Bouncing his grinning oneyear-old in his arms, Beaumont said the world record was “an absolute dream come true”. A Guinness World Records judge was on hand to present him with his two framed records. He also beat the previous time for the farthest distance cycled in a month while he was still in the saddle. Beaumont had held the roundthe-world record until 2009 when it was beaten by a New Zealander, leaving Beaumont to conclude he simply had to have the title back. “I have taken myself beyond anything I have ever done physically and mentally,” he said. D

irected by Apoorva Lakhia and scripted by Suresh Nair, Haseena Parkar is a dreary courtroom drama in which the protagonist is hauled before the law to defend herself against grave criminal charges. The story moves back and forth from the sessions court magistrate’s hearing to piece together the life of the only lady don the Mumbai underworld has ever seen. The film is hard-pressed to assert that she might have been

as much a perpetrator - she thought nothing of bandying about her fearsome brother’s name to intimidate people - as a victim who paid the price for her family’s deserved infamy. Haseena Parkar begins on that note in a courtroom as Haseena begins to tell the court and the audience her story. She is the daughter of Ibrahim Kaskar, a Mumbai police constable - one of ten children. Her large family lives in a 10 by 10 feet room in Temkar Street, South Mumbai. She has a brother. His name is Dawood Ibrahim. The first half of the film makes you feel that no Bollywood movie has captured the ambience and ethos of the Temkar street area as well as Haseena has done. Director Apoorva Lakhia has paid minute attention to detail and you are transported into the 1980s when Dawood began his ascent in the Mumbai underworld. Siddhanth Kapoor excels as the young Dawood whose only agenda is to eliminate his gangland rivals and dominate Mumbai’s crime landscape. The real find in Haseena is Ankur Bhatia who plays Ibrahim Parkar, Haseena’s

rive down GS Road and opposite the Agriculture office at Khanapara, above the Jaguar Showroom, on the top floor is Retro Town. The sign is bold and at night it’s hard not to notice the signboard. Take the elevator up to the fourth floor, past the heavy door, enter a space that will transport you to a space that has juxtaposed the past with modern. An old typewriter machine, bric-a-brac from 60’s and 70’s including a bright yellow Vespa bang in the middle, complete with a pool table, Retro Town has created an ambience that transports one back into an era of music and carefree life. The walls have newspaper prints, the water gets served in aluminium mugs and the menu is newsprint - Retro Times, with Oxomiya headings too! How cool is that! Speaking to the young owner of Retro town, Siddharth, as he walked me to the outside sitting

with an overview of busy GS Road and beyond, it was easy to see his passion and ideas. Spanking new Retro Town is just a month old; one can almost smell the paint still. It is designed as a pub with music and dance floor area, not a restaurant per se. The menu is designed in the same line, finger food, easy meal platters, pizzas and burgers catering to the popular taste in town. The license for the drinks is yet to come, so far they have to serve non-alcoholic drinks only. We started with Devilled Eggs, as suggested by Siddharth, Thread Chicken (I was curious) and Garlic Mushroom. I was expecting the eggs to be ensconced in mince meat but when it arrived it was basically egg halves fried tastily in a light batter with Mayo. The Thread Chicken came, chicken slices batter fried coated in crisp

husband. Clearly, Ankur is an actor to watch. Shraddha Kapoor deglamourises herself to get into character and her sincerity as an actress reflects throughout the movie. For a change, she also does not get wet in the rain like she does in most of her films. By the interval, you feel Haseena is on the right path. It has all the ingredients of a good masala Bollywood movie to make it a blockbuster. But, as you return to the theatre with this belief post the interval and the film moves on, you start to wonder: Where is this story headed? The narrative loses its hold on the characters’ moral campus, letting them spin in their own web of deceit rather than pull them out of their discrepancies to make sense of their outlawed lives. Underworld period dramas have anyways outlived their utility. In terms of both style and substance, they now reek of musty monotony. The drudgery is only aggravated when the director resorts to outmoded, by-the-numbers storytelling that has little to commend itself. In the end, the film achieves neither grit nor glory. n noodles. ngeekar Films recently launched the master poster of the first fulllength Assamese feature film on the problem of witch hunting, ‘Aei Maatite’. The film is set to release on 6th October 2017 in all major cinemas across Assam and North East. The famous student politician, Nirangkush Nath, has made his debut as an actor in ‘Aei Maatite’. All the posters have been designed by Tapan Das. The movie made under the banner of ‘Angeekar Films’ is directed by independent filmmaker and eminent theatre personality Dr. Sitanath Lahkar

and it is an adaptation of his famous stage play ‘Tamasaa’ on the burning problem of witch hunting. The story, screenplay, dialogues and lyrics have also been penned by Dr. Lahkar, a retired Principal of Cotton College. Dr. Lahkar said, “We are gradually, step by step, approaching the release date and this master poster is a step closer to that direction. I am thankful to SFI for its support to Aei Maatite and to our endeavor of creating awareness about witch hunting problem.” ‘Aei Maatite’ mainly talks about the witch hunting problems in Assam and how a section of people are using witchcraft for their own interest. Produced under the joint collaboration of the Assam State Film (Finance & Development) Corporation Ltd. and Bibi Devi Barbarooah, under the banner of Prerana Creations, the film is a love story and has, among its cast, Ravi Sarma, Barsha Rani Bishaya, Bibhuti Bhushan Hazarika, Nipon Goswami, Saurabh Hazarika, Arun Nath, Gunjan Bharadwaj, Jyoti Nath, Moonmi Phookan, Madhurima Chowdhury and Madhusmita Saikia. The music of the film is by Tarali Sarma and the cinematography has been done by Pradip Daimary. Reviews of the movie have pegged it at a score of 3.8/5 and a leading reviewer on Facebook

has updated as follows: It was the perfect romantic musical, if I may opine. Perfect because of its very creative musical sutradhari, perfect because Ravi Sarma’s handsomeness is back on screen as is Barsha Bishaya’s beauty, perfect because the two love stories fell into place so perfectly and without too much fuss. A bright big screen showcasing Assam’s rural beauty, ample doses of humour and comedy, and some seriously good music by Tarali Sarma, director Prerana Barborooah seems to have arrived with a bang on the commercial scene. What the movie could have done with was some more drama as the script provided ample scope of at least two serious domestic/ family altercations. That would have perhaps made it absolutely perfect. Good Asomiya cinema otherwise. n

a very strong message against witch hunting, upholding the value of scientific temperament and human life. The film aims to highlight that witch hunting has no reason at all and is shrouded in the darkness of superstition, which is to be overcome by the society itself. The action-drama film has some very critical scenes, shooting of which were done

with utmost care and precision. The film cinematically showcases some of the inhuman killings in the name of witch hunting.

Aei Maatite has received the clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CENSOR Board) with a U/A certificate. n

Fun Horoscope of the week This week, you may feel moved to beautify your place and find ways to brighten it up in general. And with ideas from magazines or your own imagination, you can have a lot of fun with DIY and craft projects. In fact, the new moon in this same zone on Tuesday could coincide with a decision to make a fresh start, perhaps by introducing a pet or moving to a new home. As of Friday, leisure and pleasure options are firmly on the agenda.

This can be an excellent week for networking and connecting with likeminded others. If you’re eager to promote a project, a marketing plan can help. If you want to make new connections on social media, getting up to speed here can be very positive. But as the glowing sun moves into Libra and your home and family sector on Friday, it might be time to step back a little and enjoy some extra nurturing and pampering if possible.

This week brings an opportunity for a new beginning. You might be ready to start a savings plan, pay off a debt, or perhaps commit to earning more. This lunar phase can set you on track if you make a firm intention on or after September 19. On Friday, there’s a shift as the cheery sun moves into your sector of communication for a four-week stay. This can be an opportunity to connect with like-minded people and expand your networking options.

The coming weeks can be an opportunity to relax and treat yourself to some healthful pampering sessions that can help you feel restored. However, with a complex blend of energies also showing up this week, you might need to be firm with someone who drains your vitality. Setting firm boundaries could be essential to keeping things in check. Finally, the sun’s move into your financial sector on Friday could see you taking stock of your resources.

You might be more connected to your thoughts, feelings, and intuition over the weeks ahead. And with delightful Venus, your guide planet, in this secluded sector, you might feel like keeping to yourself. Time out for reflection can be good for you now, as it might enable you to gain clarity regarding an issue that has confused you for some time. Once the sun enters your sign on Friday, you might be ready to bring some of your dreams and visions to life.

With lovely Venus active in your social sector, there may be some romantic possibilities in the cards. You might enjoy all kinds of social events, club meetings, or community activities, and this can be the perfect time to connect with others and make new friends. At the same time, someone may not be as perfect as they seem to be. You could become great friends, but it would help to be realistic about their positive traits as well as flaws.

There’s a focus on your sector of goals and ambitions this week. A new moon in this zone early on indicates an opportunity could represent a fresh start for you. You could impress all the right people with a proactive stance, charm, and willingness to go the extra mile for others. But make room for social events, as your social life could have extra sparkle over the coming weeks. The chance to get to know someone better could lead to a supportive new friendship.

Being willing to move outside your comfort zone can allow you to sample some wonderful opportunities, but it’s easier said than done. With feisty Mars in your sector of travel and exploration, you’ll have the courage if you can be willing to take the first step. On another note, if you decide to take advantage of someone’s suggestion, make sure it’s reliable. Misinformation could be a problem over the coming days. As of Friday, your ambitious side can come to the fore.

The potential for inner transformation is strong now. You may feel called to explore issues that have been holding you back. This is all good, as by gently unpicking and working with intense feelings, things can begin to ease and you’ll be able to release this matter. From Friday, you might also seek lighter and brighter options in the form of a short break or a trip to a place you find inspiring. Enjoying a new experience would also appeal to you.

With a powerful emphasis on your relationships zone, you may find yourself thrown together with others in a way that allows for new insights and possibilities. Collaborating with key people or teaming up to complete a project can work very well, and it’s certainly better than trying to accomplish something alone. There is also a deeper focus showing up as the sun moves into a more intense sector of your chart, encouraging you to acknowledge and embrace issues that 1 2 3 4 are ready to be healed.

Your Puja style guide

t’s the most festive time of the year; if devotion is making the buzz, can style statement be far behind? What to flaunt and how to stand out. Hear it from the experts:

Rikhiya Chakraborty

Jyoti Kashmiri (Fashion Designer) – Indo western gowns, long flowing skirts with crop tops are trending this season. For traditional evenings, stylish kurtis can be paired with palazzo skirts or cigarette pants. For the all times sari lover’s, soft georgette, net and handloom saris and mekhela chadors are always a first choice. The newly married brides can choose colours like red, royal blue or hot pink. Men can opt for Indo-

I

western kurtas with jeans. It can be teamed up with waist coats in bohemian prints or solid colours to add to the festive mood. Moonmee Baruah (Fashion Designer) – This Durga Puja, opt for lighter hues. Keep garments minimalist and comfortable. Go for extremely light-weight attires with perfect blend of ethnic and western designs. This season, appliqués, prints, embroidered styles, sleeves with slits, long slim cut-offs and cigarette pants are in trend. Kanchan Sabharwal (Fashion Designer) - Saris or any traditional outfit is the best to go for any festive occasion, whatever trend maybe on the go. However, this year more than saris, it’s the blouses that are taking all the attention away. Blouses with various necklines and sleeve designs like ruffled, bell sleeves, leg - o

mutton to name a few. Other than that kurtis with long midcut slits, tunics, gowns with an indo-western fusion mix is also the talk of the town. Jitu Barman (Make Up Artist) - For the daytime, it’s better to keep it subtle and light, in an effortless manner. Creating a light base with primer and foundation dabbed with compact to keep it dry and even, and keeping the lips nude with light shades of gloss. The eyes can be made dramatic by applying mascara and pastel eye shadow, avoiding eye liner or kajal. As for evenings and night, the lips can be dabbed with red matte or a shade darker than red. Even mauve colour is very trendy and goes almost with all outfits. The face needs to glow. Hence the base should be well moistured with foundation and primer. Blusher can be used in shades of light brown or pink depending on the person’s skin tone. Since the mood is of festivity, shimmery eye-shadows also can be applied. n

Faith is Your Wealth

f you think your faith in God is doing a favor to God, then you are mistaken. Your faith in God or Guru does nothing to God or Guru. Faith is your wealth. Faith gives you strength instantly. Faith brings you stability, centeredness, calmness, and love. Faith is your blessing. If you lack faith, you will have to pray for faith. But to pray, you need faith. This is a paradox. People put their faith in the world, but the whole world is just a soap bubble. People have faith in themselves, but they don’t know who they are. People think that they have faith in God, but they really do not know who God is.

There are three types of faith: Faith in yourself: Without faith in yourself, you think I can’t do this; this is not for me; I will never be liberated in this life. Faith in the world:

You must have faith in the world or you can’t move an inch. You deposit money in the bank with faith that it will be returned. If you doubt everything, nothing will happen for you.

Faith in the Divine: Have faith in the Divine and you will evolve. All these faiths are connected; you must have all three for each to be strong. If you start doubting in one, you will begin to doubt everything. Lack of faith in God, the world, or yourself brings fear. Faith makes you full – faithful. Having faith in the world without faith in God does not bring complete peace. But if you have love, you automatically have peace and freedom. People who are extremely disturbed should only have faith in God.

VAASTU SHASTRA

T

Vaastu rules during Durga Puja

he Goddess Durga is worshipped during the month of Aswin as a form of Shakti or power. The first nine days of the month are very auspicious and they are known as the Navaratras (nine nights). This year the Navratras (auspicious nine days) have already started from the 21st September and will end on the 29th on the day of the Dussehra. This is the best time to worship the nine forms of Goddess Durga and lot of people do fasting and take only vegetarian food during the nine days. Meditation yields good results during Navratras. According to Vaastu, the northeast or the Eeshan angle is the abode of the gods. So the statue of Durga Maa or the earthen Kalash (pot) should be placed at the northeast and worshipped. The Kalash must be worshipped on the first day of the Navratras. This represents the earth and it must not be touched during the rest of the nine days. Geo-magnetic wise, the positive energy of the earth originates from the northeast. But the persons performing the puja should face east or north for best results. Another aspect during Navratri is to have a fire lit all round the clock for nine days for the Havan (Fire worship). As the southeast is the direction of the fire element, this Akhand Jyoti or continuous fireplace should be located at southeast. Pure ghee should be used as fuel. It is said that burning of ghee purifies the

atmosphere. It is very auspicious to have an earthen lamp lit with ghee in the house around evening time which must be kept at the southeast corner of the puja. The statues of the nine forms of Goddess Durga should be dressed in red clothes. Red Chandan (sandalwood), Red Vermillon (Sindoor), red ornaments should adorn the idols. Swastikas should be drawn on the main door outside the house with lime and turmeric. Needless to say, the Navratri Puja should not be done near a bathroom or toilet. Another significance of this period is the Kumari Puja or worshipping girls aged between one and sixteen. Depending on the age of the girls, they are worshipped in the various forms of the goddess. The girl in question symbolises Goddess Durga. For example, a one year old girl represents Sandhya, a form of Durga. A sixteen year old girl is worshipped as Mata Ambika. It is basically performed to evolve the purity and divinity of the women of the society. In Mahabharata, Arjuna had performed Kumari Puja. It is done on the 8th day (Ashtami) or 9th day (Navami) of Navratri. Devotees in most parts of our country wash the feet of the girls, offer them food, clothes and gifts during Kumari Puja.
