GENERALSecretaryof thePeople’sProgressive Party(PPP)andGuyana’s Vice-President,Dr.BharratJagdeohasassured Guyanesethatallfunds generatedfromthesaleof thecountry’scarboncreditswillundergoathorough audit.

Dr.Jagdeo,duringa pressconferencelastThursday,saidthattheauditwill beconductedaspartofthe processfortheallocation andexpendituretoensure thatallfundsareaccounted for.

“Attheendoftheday, wehavetoaccountforallof thesefunds,andwithaseparateauditthatwillgotothe Parliament,”Dr.Jagdeosaid.

InDecember2022,the ArchitectureforREDD+ Transactionsannouncedthe issuanceof33.47million TREEScredittoGuyana 2016to2020.

TheArchitecturefor REDD+Transactions(ART) isaglobalinitiativethat seekstoincentivisethereducingofemissionsfrom

deforestationandforestdegradation(REDD),aswellas restoreforestsandprotect intactforests.

TheGovernmentofGuyana,inthatsameyear,enteredintoanagreementwith theHessCorporationforthe saleofcarboncreditsfora minimumofUS$750million between2022and2032.

Fifteenpercentofthe

earningsfromtheinitial disbursementswasallocated toIndigenousvillagesacross Guyana,whiletheremaining 85percentwasallocatedto nationalpriorities,suchas

Already,thegovernment hasbegunpreparingtodisbursethesecondroundof payments.

Lastweek,Guyana’s PresidentDr.IrfaanAlirevealedthatthecountryearned US$87.5millionfromitssale ofcarboncreditsforthisyear.

Thegovernment,he noted,wouldbeincreasing thepercentagepaidoutto Indigenousvillages.

Thisyear’searnings wouldhaveseenvillages receivinglessmoneythan theydidin2023,hadthe governmentmaintainedthe 15percentpayout.

“Althoughtheagreement is15percent,wehaveincreasedthepercentageofthis year’searningto26.5per cent,therebyensuringthat youwillgetnolessthanwhat

yougotlastyear.Youwillget US$23.2million,or$4.84billioninyourvillages;directly transferredtoyourvillages,” PresidentAlisaid,adding:

“Wedonotwantyouto getless.”

TheLCDS2030,whichis oneofthemanyhallmarksof thePeople’sProgressiveParty/Civic(PPP/C)government, outlinesarobustmechanismingthatwillbeaccruedfrom thecountry’sforestresources.

TheLCDS2030 pavedthewayforahistoricagreementbetween HessCorporationandthe GovernmentofGuyana, wherebytheoilgiantopted topurchaseaboutonethirdofallGuyana’scredits(issuedandanticipated) upto2030.

Distinguishedphilanthropist,AmeenaGafoor,passesaway

AMEENAGAFOOR,a distinguishedphilanthropist,whohasleftanindeliblemarkonthearts andeducationinGuyana, passedawayonMonday, leavingbehindalegacyof generosity,dedication,and culturalenrichment.

PresidentDr.IrfaanAli, inaheartfelttribute,hailed Gafooras“atrulyextraordinarywomanwhosecontributionstoournation,and especiallytotheliteraryarts wereexceptional.”

Beyondhercontributionstotheliteraryworld, Gafoorwasdeeplyinvolved incharitableactivities.

Alongsideherhusband, SattaurGafoor,shecofoundedtheGafoorFoundation,whichhasfunded numerousmedical,educational,andsportsprojects.

InNovember2022, thefoundationopenedthe AmeenaGafoorMedical andDialysisCentreatGafoors’Parikabranch,makingdialysistreatmentmore

THEEnvironmental ProtectionAgency(EPA)’sAmazonSustainable Landscape(ASL)ProjectManagementUnit hasinitiatedcommunityconsultationsacross 35communities.These consultationsstartedon July16,2024,andwill concludeonAugust30, 2024.

Theseconsultations, theEPAsays,arebeing conductedattwokey projectsites:TheNorth RupununiWetlands,and theKanukuMountainProtectedAreas.

Theprimaryobjectives aretoengagestakeholders,informcommunities abouttheproject’sgoals andactivities,andtogathervaluablefeedback.A totalof27communities havebeensuccessfully consultedthusfar.

Dominicaannouncespackageforcountry’sfirsteverOlympicgoldmedalist

ROSEAU,Dominica, (CMC)-TheDominica GovernmentonSunday nightannouncedthatitis providingtheisland’sfirst everOlympicgoldmedalist,TheaLafondGadson, withthecountry’shighest nationalaward,aswellas acashgiftofnearlyhalf amilliondollars(OneEC dollar=US$0.37cents) followingherexploitsat theParisOlympicsearlier thismonth.

PrimeMinisterRooseveltSkerrit,speakingat apublicceremonyheldat theWindsorParkStadium, afterLaFondhadtravelled inamotorcadefromthe secondtownofPortsmouth, northofheretothecapital,Roseau,alsorevealed thatthetriplejumpwinner wouldbeappointedasthe InternationalSportsAmbassadorandthatsheand herhusband-coachwould beprovidedwithdiplomaticpassports.

“TheGovernmentof Dominicahasdecidedto grantyouacashgiftof EC$400,000,appointyou asInternationalSports Ambassador,alongwitha

LaFondsaidshewas pleasedtohaverepresented DominiccaattheOlympicsandthatpriortothe gamesshehadsuffereda minorinjurywhichnow requiredsurgery,hencethe reasonforherwalkingwith crutches.
