Mashramani: A beacon of unity

GUYANA, known for its diverse culture and rich history, will celebrate the Mashramani festival, a colourful and vibrant celebration of unity and culture, today.

Mashramani, which means “celebration after hard work,” is indeed a time for Guyanese to come together and celebrate their unique identity, history, and culture.

The festival is usually characterized by vibrant colours, music, dance, and food. People dressed up in colourful costumes parade through

the streets, accompanied by lively music played on steel drums and other instruments.

The streets will be filled with food vendors selling traditional Guyanese dishes, along with a variety of Bar-bQue and other options.

Thousands are expected to flock the roadway and brave the weather to experience the costume displays and dance routines.

But Mashramani is more than just a celebration of culture and tradition, it is also a symbol of unity and togeth-

erness. The festival brings together people from all walks of life, regardless of race, religion, or social status. It is a time for Guyanese people to put aside their differences and come together as one nation.

The Mashramani festival is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Guyana and the resilience of its people. It is a celebration of unity, diversity, and the power of community. As Guyana continues to navigate the challenges of the modern world, events like Mashramani serve

as a reminder of the importance of coming together and celebrating the things that make us unique and proud.

President Irfaan Ali has been a beacon of hope for the country since his election in August 2020. Since being elected to office, President Ali has made national unity a top priority, and his efforts to bridge the gap between different groups have been widely praised.

In a country as diverse as Guyana, with a population of over 780,000 people and a

mix of ethnicities, religions, and cultures, national unity is essential for progress and development. President Ali understands this and has taken concrete steps to promote unity and inclusivity.

President Ali’s administration has taken steps to address issues in every community. Hs embrace of national unity is a refreshing change from the divisive politics that have plagued Guyana for many years. His leadership style, characterized by inclusivity, dialogue and collab-

oration, has the potential to heal the country’s deep-seated divisions and foster a more prosperous and harmonious society.

As Guyana looks to the future, President Ali’s efforts to promote national unity should be celebrated and supported. His vision of a united, inclusive and prosperous Guyana is one that all Guyanese should strive to realize, and his leadership provides a beacon of hope for the country’s future.

Mashramani 2024 dubbed biggest ever cultural celebration

MASHRAMANI 2024, a fervent celebration of Guyanese culture was dubbed the biggest celebration to date.

Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport’s Director of National Events, Andrew Tyndall, told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that Guyanese could expect more vibrant and creative

costume bands, a lively parade, and high-quality performances by local artistes.

“The ministry is working to make this year’s Mash the biggest Mash to date. We are engaging the private sector to encourage them to participate in the costume and float parade. One of our targets this year is to have more costume bands on the Road Mash,”

he said.

Additionally, Mashramani events were expanded to Regions Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), and 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) to ensure every citizen feels more connected to the annual festivities, and is engrossed in the

jubilation.

This year, the ministry added Dancehall to the list of categories for its annual Soca Monarch competition, which is designed to spotlight the diversity of musical talent in Guyana.

He said, “We spoke with the young people, and this is something that the young people want. This is a genre

that they have been in to, and we are going to create a platform for them to express their art, and express their talents, because the ministry is all about promoting the development of our young people and their talents.”

The inclusion of the new dancehall competition in the Mashramani 2024 lineup is also part of the ministry’s

plan to evolve and enrich the festival, which is a unique and important Guyanese product.

Guyanese are encouraged to participate in the Mashramani Costume and Float Parade and other events in celebration of the country’s Republic Day.

The history of Mashramani

ONE of the most popular and colourful of all local festivals, the Mashramani festival is observed in Guyana on February 23 –Guyana’s Republic Day – to commemorate the birth of the Republic.

The word Mashramani is derived from the Arawak indigenous language and in translation means “the celebration of a job well done”. It refers to a special event which brings people together after some enterprise.

As a national holiday, Mashramani is celebrated in a semi-official way in all ten regions of Guyana with flag-raising ceremonies or

sporting events. The biggest celebration usually takes place in or around Guyana’s capital city, Georgetown, where spectacular costume competitions, float parades, masquerade bands and dancing in the streets to the accompaniment of steel band music and calypsos, take place.

Masqueraders frequent the streets performing dance routines, a reminder of Guyana’s African heritage. Calypso and Chutney singing competitions with their witty social commentaries are another integral part of the festival and this culminates

in the coronation of a King or Queen.

The Jaycees of Linden had, since Guyana became independent in 1966, been organizing an independent carnival in Mackenzie. When Guyana became a republic in February 1970, they formed the Jaycees Republic Celebrations Committee. Basil Butcher was selected as chairman but due to his being selected to tour Australia with the West Indies cricket team, Jim Blackman was appointed as the Deputy to carry on.

A broad-based committee, including resource personnel such as Wordsworth

McAndrew, Arthur Seymour and Adrian Thompson, began the organization of the carnival activities.

The search for a name to replace carnival began and it was suggested by Basil Butcher that an Amerindian name be chosen.

This was agreed and several individuals, including Mr. Allan Fieldlow, an Amerindian, were contacted. Mr. Fieldlow had discussions with his grandfather who described a type of festival that was held by Amerindians whenever they gather to celebrate a special event.

The event, he said, was

like “Muster Many” (or Mashirimehi in Amerindian) and sounded in Arawak like Mashramani. Steps were taken to confirm this. Adrian Thompson concluded that since no one could have confirmed or denied that the Arawak word for festival was Mashramani, then the festival will be called Mashramani.

On February 23, 1970, the festival called Mashramani was a huge success with people drawn from all regions of Guyana to Linden welcoming Guyana’s status as a Republic with over three days of frolic and fun.

After witnessing the mas-

sive crowds, and the glitter and level of competition, Mr. David Singh, a Government Official, held discussions with the Jaycees Committee about bringing the event to Georgetown, the nation’s capital.

Approval was also given by then President, Forbes Burnham, for Mash to be a National event for the Republic Celebration.

Mash activities were rotated in Linden, Berbice and Georgetown but due to sponsorship, the Costume band contest remained in Georgetown.

Leader of the Opposition: Let us further embrace our shared destiny

Fellow Guyanese, today marks the 54th anniversary of our country attaining republican status.

While Independence Day in May celebrates our freedom from colonial rule and our determination to achieve full national self-determination, republican status conveys our aspirations to establish a national identity and a guiding development philosophy.

On February 23, 1970, we declared ourselves a Cooperative Republic to highlight our national ethos of maximizing the use of local resources and working together for the greater good of all.

Let us, therefore, use the occasion of our 54th anniversary as a Republic to reflect on our Guyanese identity and consciousness as a nation and as a people. Let us reflect on the bonds and common goals that hold us together.

Let us pledge to minimize or remove the hindrances that undermine our togetherness and cooperation. Let us further embrace our shared destiny.

We believe Guyana can quickly become one of the best countries to live in. Our country has been blessed with the natural and human resources to deliver on the promises and pledges made decades ago.

A Blessed Republic Day to all Guyanese.

Alliance For Change: Together we can achieve more

THE Alliance For Change extends greetings to all our Guyanese brothers and sisters on the occasion of the 54th Anniversary of Guyana becoming a Co-operative Republic.

The concept and spirit of cooperation are indelibly linked to the ethos of the Guyanese nation.

Birthed through the indomitable spirit of our enslaved ancestors who on shaking off the chains of bondage joined together to own villages, this concept must remain a cornerstone of our development.

Together we can achieve more. More than half a century ago when our young independent nation took that bold step into the future by severing the last of the proverbial apron strings to our colonial masters it was with the intention and conviction that as a people, we were capable of establishing an

equitable and just society.

Today we must not lose sight of that goal.

Like our ancestors, we must be unwavering in our struggle. Standing together, as one people, we can create a nation where the needs of each citizen, especially, those of women and children, the elderly and differently able, the poor are addressed. There is enough for all.

As we celebrate our 54th Anniversary as a Co-operative Republic let our national motto, “One People, One Nation, One Destiny” be the beacon taking us into the future.

Long live the Co-operative Republic of Guyana!

Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union: We remain steadfast in our pursuit of progress for all Guyanese

IT is truly remarkable to reflect on the significance of attaining republican status for our nation, which occurred 54 years ago.

This momentous occasion marked the final shedding of our colonial linkages and ushered in a

new era of true independence for our country.

It was a significant step for us as a nation, following our Independence in 1966, and one that was intended to solidify our independent status further and strengthen our nationhood by appointing a President,

elected by the people, as our Head of State; this step and other Constitutional reforms cemented our independent status.

Today, we continue to remember this historic event with pride and gratitude for the sacrifices and efforts of those who made it possible.

On this significant anniversary of Republicanism, the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) extends its heartfelt greetings to our nation.

While we acknowledge the strides we have made in various socio-economic aspects over the past half a century, we recognise that there is still work to be done.

The struggle for economic transformation and a reasonable standard of living continues, but we remain steadfast in our pursuit of progress for all Guyanese.

The GAWU acknowledges that disunity is still one of our society’s most persistent problems, hindering progress and development. GAWU believes this issue significantly impacts our society, and we observe several national leaders stoking these tensions rather than dousing the flames.

Indeed, such attitudes are unfortunate and call into question the sincerity

of those so-called leaders. Our Union believes there is a need to take a mature and responsible approach to address it.

The union urges our leaders to work towards unifying the country, which is generally recognised as a necessary step towards achieving progress and development.

As we commemorate our nation’s republican status, we acknowledge that we stand at the threshold of unprecedented economic progress in the post-independence era.

The prospect of reaping the benefits of our natural resources fills our people with optimism and hope. However, we cannot ignore the valid concerns expressed by some members of our society.

We must strike a balance between meeting the expectations of our citizens and securing a sustainable future for our country. We recognise that our newfound wealth must be utilised in the best interest of all Guyanese if we continue developing

and building a more robust and prosperous Guyana for present and future generations.

The GAWU calls on all citizens of Guyana to play an active role in our country’s development and not be led astray by irresponsible persons who seek to thwart our progress.

As the Mashramani celebrations take place to mark this significant occasion, we must remember our duties as responsible citizens to work towards a prosperous and progressive future that benefits everyone in our nation.

We must unite and struggle to achieve genuine change that leads to all-round progress and lasting development in our beloved country. Let us celebrate this occasion and remember our shared responsibility to build a better future for all Guyanese.

A happy, peaceful Republic Anniversary and Mashramani 2024 to all!

Ethnic Relations Commission: Unique melting pot of cultures, traditions, perspectives have enriched Guyana’s national identity

THE Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) extends Republic Day greetings to all Guyanese.

Fifty-four (54) years ago we became a Republic in 1970 and in the years since we have grown as a nation rich in the cultural heritage of its diverse peoples.

nation.

The Commission therefore implores all Guyanese to participate in the national activities and celebrations planned for Republic Day/Mashramani, reflect on the progress Guyana has made as a nation and the importance that unity

and inclusivity extols in our continued journey of overcoming challenges.
