Sarah’s Christmas Wish I just want you for my own More than you could ever know Make my wish come true All I want for Christmas Is you
Sarah closed her eyes as the beautiful Christmas song on the car’s radio serenaded her mind, the sweet melody drifting in the air on the wings of joy and goodwill. Her baby was asleep in her arms and looking at her sweet adorable face, she wondered, “What will this Christmas be like for us, Isabella? Will a star in heaven twinkle for us or will our lives continue to be a struggle?” Questions she had not the answers for but in her heart there was a wish that something good could happen. She was a poor young woman with a little child, a future not too bright, for three months before her baby was born, her husband met with a fatal accident. So young for such heartache, the struggles now of a single mother, rich in heart but rags of the poor, such crumbs, the tragedies of life. Oh holy night! The stars are brightly shining A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn! Tears gathered in Sarah’s eyes and she sighed deeply, not remembering at all when life was roses and not thorns. She had married a young salesman from her church hoping that with culinary skills, they could start their own food business. But too soon tragedy struck, too soon dreams and hopes were shattered. Now she was going back home to her grandmother, the one family she was close to, where there was always love and warm comfort in her little old house. A loud noise aroused her from her thoughts, startling a little the baby in her sleep. It was another passenger the driver had secured, a buxom woman with her heavy bags.
disturb the other passengers and as the baby calmed down, she fed her a bottle of milk. All was well until the woman in the front changed the channel on the radio to dancehall music, turning up the volume. It was not Sarah’s kind of music and she noticed the young, business man’s discomfort so she asked politely, “Can you please change that?” The woman gave her a cross look, “What you want to hear girl, gospel?” “Not really” Sarah answered in a polite tone “Some softer music will be fine.” The woman grumbled but changed the channel and he smiled a little at Sarah, maybe to say ‘thanks’ and return to his work on the laptop. It was then Isabella, now in a playful mood, noticed him and she reached out her little hands to grab his, talking in her baby language. Sarah pulled her back, holding her as she bounced up and down, clapping her hands gleefully. “Isabella” Sarah said sternly in a low tone, “Not so loud.” “Let her be” the gentleman said, a little relaxed now “It’s better she’s playing than crying.” Sarah smiled and relaxed her hold a little and in a wink, Isabella launched and clapped the laptop keys hard with her hands. “Oh my goodness!” Sarah exclaimed “I’m so sorry.” The woman in front turned and laughed, “She probably
“I just need two more sis” he told Sarah, a little apologetically, “A little more patience.” She smiled a little with understanding hoping though he could secure the two more passengers soon for she had been sitting in the car at the park for close to half of an hour and the morning was getting hotter. Not long after, the driver came back with a broad smile saying, “This gentleman will pay for both seats so we are ready to go.” “Thank goodness” Sarah said with relief, setting herself and baby comfortable and glanced at the gentleman who got in the car beside her. A young business executive he seemed to be, an Asian guy, neat and casual but there was a tense expression on his face. He glanced at her briefly, with just the hint of a smile and turned on his laptop. “So, how did your car break down, man?” the driver asked him. “I’m not sure what happened” he answered in a deep smooth tone, “The mechanics are working on it.” His car had apparently broken down and he was late for a very important meeting, so he was forced to continue his journey with a hire car from the park. He did not seem to be having a good day and a short while later Sarah’s baby awoke crying. She comforted her as best as she could, not wanting to
wants to Google something.” The young man closed his laptop and leaned back in his seat with a resigning sigh, “I guess I’ll have to stop working until she sleeps.” It was a good while after before Isabella fell asleep and Sarah closed her eyes too, drifting off a little. It did not seem long before she was jolted out of her sleep by the screaming of brakes and a sudden impact as something hit the car. The baby almost fell out of her arms and she felt strong arms holding them both at the car spun out of control, the driver wrestling with the steering wheel until he brought it to a stop, a few inched away from a culvert. “Oh my God!” She cried, raising her head from the young

maureen.rampertab@gmail.com man’s shoulder. “Are you and the baby alright?” he asked “Y-yes” she nodded and held onto his arm as he helped her out of the car. He turned to assist the woman in front, who was close to a panic attack and the shaken, distraught driver. A curious crowd gather as the police arrived and the young man standing next to her commented to someone on his phone, “This is really a bad day, send someone to pick me up.” An ambulance arrived, taking the buxon woman to the hospital and as he waited for his ride, he asked her. “How are you going home?” “I don’t know” she replied, an uncertain look on her face, “I’ll probably get a bus.” He looked at her for a short moment, noting she was still shaken and he picked up both of her bags, “Come on, I’ll give you a lift home. I already missed the meeting and you can’t be left here stranded with a little child.” “Thank you” she said with deep gratitude because her heart was still racing from the ordeal of the accident. The ride that came for him was a luxury vehicle and Isabella fell asleep as they continued their journey. It was the first time mother and child had ridden in such posh comforts and looking at the kind gentleman whose personality exuded a comforting warmth, Sarah thought, “Such different worlds we are from, I’ll probably never see him again.” One never knows though, what miracles Christmas can bring. She reached the village where her grandmother lived, not a poor outlook from the main road but across a dilapidated bridge along a muddy damn was a small impoverished community. She thanked him politely refusing his help, not wanting him to see where she lived and holding Isabella carefully with one hand and her bag on the other, she walked gingerly across the bridge, not turning back to see if he had left. Her grandmother’s eyes lit up on seeing her and the old lady hugged her granddaughter, tears of happiness in her eyes. “The lord is great” she said in a shaky voice, “for allowing me to see my great granddaughter.” She kissed the sleeping child softly on her cheek and looking at Sarah, she asked, a worried look on her face, “How have you been doing, my child?”

AFRO FASHION
Chronicle Pepperpot December 14, 2014 Did you know that? The Athenia! Not an armed merchant cruiser as he thought! Not a troopship! He had torpedoed a passenger liner. Quite suddenly all the bounce and elation left Oberleutnant Lemp. His voice heavy with emotion, he turned to his gunnery officer Hinsch; “What a mess!” he stammered. “But why, why, was she blacked out?” Mess or no mess, there was little he could do now except get away. Barbara Bailey moved slowly and uncertainly through the throng towards her lifeboat station aboard the torpedoed Athenia. Surrounded by disaster, her thoughts were still on other things – on her personal anxieties and frustrations. She had been in love: now that was all over. Her broken romance and bitter words with her father were still in her mind.
Aimlessly she wandered over to the rail and gazed down at the sea, fascinated by the idea of dropping into its cold depths. She saw a dead woman floating by. When she reached her boat she found it already crowded. By the time her turn came, there were only two places left. A woman stepped in and she was about to follow. But behind her she suddenly heard a woman break into a sob. She stopped, turned around and then stepped back. “You go ahead.” Barbara repeated, adding: Nobody loves me.” The woman hesitated for a fraction. But then she stepped forward. As she was about to get into the boat, she turned and said: - “It’s not true that nobody loves you. Jesus loves you.” CALM FAREWELLS AS BOATS LEAVE In the main, people moved into the lifeboats in a calm and orderly manner. (Some thought the boats were being launched purely as a precautionary measure.) Men would put their wives and children into a boat and quietly promised to follow in the next. That was all. Here and there perhaps, someone shed a few tears.
But there were some who left the Athenia in anything but an orderly way. As a lifeboat swung down past her deck, Mrs. Hugh McDonald threw her three year-old son Ronald in. Then she mounted the rail and waited for the boat to swing in towards her again before jumping. She landed safely but a woman who had climbed on to the rail beside her did not have the same luck. She hesitated just for a fraction too long before jumping. In that instant the boat had swung away again and she missed and fell into the sea. Mrs. McDonald never saw what happened to her. THE WOMAN HELPED A MAN Barbara Bailey was still wandering about the decks watching the boats getting away, indifferent to her own fate, but anxious to help where she could. Sarah’s Christmas Wish
Sarah put Isabella down on a cot and sat down on the worn sofa, smiling to hide the pain that was still like a fresh wound in her heart. “It’s fine, grandma. I’ve come back to you and this Christmas will be wonderful for us with what little we have.” Grandmother was an old woman, wise in her years, her eyes and wit still sharp and she saw clearly through the veil Sarah was hiding her pain. “Bless your heart, my child” she said, “I’ve always known there was something special about you.” Sarah unpacked her bag to settle down once more, in a home she had lived since she was a baby until she married Joel and moved to another region. It had saddened her heart to leave her grandmother alone but the pastor of their church has assured that the church’s sisters and brothers would take care of her. Sarah had visited her as often as she could until one year later, in her third month of pregnancy when she started to feel sick and couldn’t travel. She had sent though, whatever small amount of money she could afford to the pastor to ensure her grandmother’s upkeep. Now that Joel was gone, she had felt a strong need to return even before the pastor had informed her about her grandmother’s worsening health. Sarah looked around the small house that had deteriorated somewhat and in her mind, she promised, “I’ll clean and brighten this home for you, grandma, so the days of your life will be good and comfortable.” It was close to dinner when Isabella who had been pretty quiet since she awoke, playing with Sarah’s old dolls, screamed, a high pitch scream to signal she was hungry. Sarah hurried tp prepare a bottle of milk for her but she couldn’t find the bag with the baby formula, she realized after a moment’s thought, that she had forgotten the bag in the young businessman’s luxury vehicle. “Oh no, what do I do now?” The two tins of formula and other baby foods were a two week supply and there wasn’t much to eat in grandma’s house. “Grandma” she called to her grandmother, who was in her little vegetable garden, “Take care of Isabella, I have to hurry to the shop to get something for her.” The next morning, as she was getting ready to go to the supermarket by bus, one village away, for the baby’s formula, there was a knock on the door. “It must be the pastor” she thought but when she opened the door, the business executive who had traveled with her yesterday was standing there. “Oh!” she exclaimed, truly surprised, not expecting at all to see him again, “Why-why are you here?”
He held up the baby’s bag she had forgotten, “Thought you might need this and since I was passing your way…” he left the sentence unfinished. “Thank you” she said relieved but somewhat uneasy that he had seen the poverty she lived in. “Is this why you didn’t want me to help you yesterday?” he asked, noting her discomfort. She didn’t answer and turning, he walked to the gate and stood surveying the place, noticing the muddy dams, tall grass, clogged drains overgrown with weeds, and little old houses, a few close to falling down. “This looks like a place time has forgotten,” was his comment, a disturbed look on his face, “and that bridge,” he stressed, “is a hazard.” “Not much has been done here over the years” she told him. “This is not good” he said “Something has to be done.” He looked at her and asked, “How are you and the baby?” “We’re okay” she answered He smiled a little, “That’s good, I have to go now but I’ll see what I can do about this place.” He turned to leave then stopped after a few steps then turned back, “I forgot to ask your name.” “Sarah” she said. “A nice simple, biblical name” he said, nodding his head a little, “I’m Ronald.” She watched him leave, pleased she had seen him again, not sure why but liked that nice, little feeling in her heart. The next few days, Sarah began the cleaning and packing, finding old photographs and mementos from grandma’s young days, in old boxes pushed in corners. “These are real treasures” she said as she decorated the old house, giving it a whole new look. She was looking through a box of old Christmas cards, beautiful sentimental words that brought tears to her eyes when an excited voice called from the gate, “Sarah, it’s happening, come and have a look!” Sarah went outside wondering what was happening, seeing a small group of residents standing there, pleased looks on their faces. “The bridge, they are building a new bridge.” “What?” she looked surprised, “Who’s building it?” “Your gentleman friend who came the other day” one of the women answered. “I can’t believe this” Sarah said to herself, “He has actually kept his word.” She walked a little way up the dam and from there she saw him talking to the construction workers. He saw her and raised his hand and that pleased feeling she had felt that day on

seeing him again was now a little more intense. Sarah returned to the house and standing in front of the mirror, she let her hair down, that fell to her shoulder and looked at herself. A young woman looked back at her, her ebony skin, smooth but a dull look in her eyes, tiredness on her face. Pretty, she was but in a simple way as a poor girl could be. He was a rich stranger, in a class way above her with a confident outlook and classic good looks. She sighed and shook her head, not daring to think of the impossible. Two days later, grandmother had a relapse and Sarah sat by her bedside all night, trying to get her to hold and she prayed, “Dear lord, please don’t take her away now, if I were to have a Christmas wish, I wish that my grandmother spends this Christmas with us.” A star twinkled in the sky as a poor young woman’s wish reached the heavens.(To be continued)

Dental caries; gum disease are the most common oral health problems Now that 2014 will end in a few weeks let us review some important facts I examined during the year. Remember, dental care is by far the single most expensive service in terms of routine health care. An important key to mitigating this situation is basic knowledge of dentistry. (1) Dental caries (tooth decay) and gum disease are the two most common oral health problems in human beings. (2) Tooth decay is caused by bacteria which are normally present in the mouth and sticking to the teeth in a concentrated form with the help of a thin slimy layer called dental plaque. (3) When an individual takes food with fermentable sugars and some starches, the germs in the plaque start to make acid which produce cavities in the tooth’s enamel by dissolving it. (4) Whenever dental plaque is allowed to accumulate it may harden to form calculus (tartar). (5) Calculus gradually penetrates beneath the gum to cause a chronic condition called periodontitis (gum disease) which is characterised by bleeding gums, bad breath, deep pockets around the involved teeth with eventual mobility (shaking). (6) A healthy mouth can be assured by brushing each tooth for at least one minute a day with a fluoridated toothpaste, flossing daily, eating a balanced diet, avoiding sugary foods between meals and visiting the dentist every three months for a check-up. (7) Bad breath is mainly caused by the excessive concentration of bacteria in the mouth which occurs in gum disease, tooth decay and stagnated saliva in cases of fever and “morning breath”. (8) The cure for bad breath consists of extractions, if any, fillings if any, scaling and polishing if needed, followed by the rules as stated in number six above. (9) The treatment for discoloured teeth depends on whether the stain is external or internal. External stains, such as those derived from tobacco, are removed by polishing with an abrasive while intrinsic discolourations which in fact pervade the very structure of the tooth, may be eliminated by bleaching or capping. (10) In these days of modern dentistry there is no justification for the patient to be fearful of dental treatment as every procedure is virtually painless. Indeed, any existing inhibition could never exculpate the consequences of neglecting to visit the dentist. (11) Nearly a dozen oral diseases may result in death. The fatal situations usually occur when bacteria and their poisons emanate from infected roots (‘stumps”) and invade the brain. (12) Cancer of the mouth and lungs are due to smoking is a prevalent cause of death among adult men. (13) Oral manifestations frequently represent the first signs of AIDS. These signs include white areas anywhere in the mouth, “hairy” patches on the tongue, red to purple spots on the insides of the cheek or on the palate, and red, swollen and painful gums (acute gingivitis) despite good oral hygiene. (14) The extraction of a functional tooth should always be followed soon (at least two weeks) after by its artificial replacement (prosthesis). If not, dental migration (movement to open or close the gap), extrusion (lengthening of the one opposite due to the absence of contact) and bone reabsorption would take place. These circumstances make it difficult or impossible for the patient to be fitted with adequate replacements. (15) Whether as an individual, a community or a nation, it is definitely cheaper and more effective to achieve a good oral health status through the principles of prevention.

What Happened To His 'Friend with Benefits' In The Moment
I have a coworker who has become my good friend. Our friendship stays outside the office and we remain professional at work. We are both single and have had sex on a few occasions. Recently my friend travelled back to his home country where he had not been for four years. He came back with a bombshell. He is now in a serious relationship with his longtime friend of six years from over there. They spent less than seven days together on this vacation and hadn't seen each other in years. Now she is planning to visit him over New Year's, stay for 10 days, move here and eventually get married. None of this makes sense to me. With the news, I told my friend I have feelings for him. I wanted to tell him everything he is doing is too fast and not thought out. It seems like a huge mistake. They don't have much backing for a relationship. I don't think this relationship will be a good one, but I don't want to seem jealous in any way. VERA Vera, you are not an outsider. You had sex with him. You admitted to feelings for him. You are not a disinterested party. How could you not be jealous? With teenagers, the "moving too fast" argument is powerful. With adults, not so much. You want to judge his speed because in a year and a half you weren't able to change "friends with benefits" into a relationship. Moving too fast doesn't preclude him from going back home, seeing a woman he's known for six years and acting. Six years ago they might not have been ready. Now they are both available and sparks flew. It is their time. It is their moment. And it is your moment to acknowledge it is over. If the friendship lasted only out of its potential to become a relationship, the friendship is over too. Their moment frees you from a year and a half of friends with benefits. WAYNE & TAMARA

Convicted murderer freed - impugned hearsay statement not
VII
proved to be that of victim
THE last words said to be uttered by murdered woman, Elizabeth Griffith in 1985 before she was found dead satisfied a Demerara Assize Jury that Fred Martin called ‘Bull” was the killer. ‘Bull,’ who was found guilty by the jury, was sentenced to death by the trial judge but he appealed. But on appeal, the Guyana Court of Appeal, supported by inconsistencies and contradictions from the evidence of the prosecution witnesses, that court freed Martin called ‘ Bull’ and set aside the conviction and death sentence. The Appellate Court was constituted by Chancellor Kenneth George and Justices of Appeal Mr. Cecil Kennard and Mr. Maurice Churaman. The facts disclosed that the accused was charged with the murder of a woman who died after being violently struck with a stick. Three witnesses testified that within minutes of being hit, the deceased cried out “Ow mummy look how ‘Bull’ come and lash me.” The accused was more familiarly known as “Bull” than by his real name. The admissibility of the words “Look how ‘Bull’ come and lash me” was unsuccessfully challenged at the trial on the grounds of inconsistencies among the testimonies. The appellant was convicted and sentenced to death but he appealed. The Appellate Court held that: The trial judge failed to establish as a question of fact whether the impugned hearsay statement was in fact uttered by the victim. Therefore, the preliminary question of admissibility on the principle of contemporaneity and spontaneity was never raised. The trial judge did not have all the material upon which she could have properly decided to admit the evidence. APPEAL ALLOWED Sixty-four cases were referred to in the case. Mr. Rex Mc Kay S.C, Mr. Stanley Moore and Mr. V. Persaud represented the appellant. Mr. Desmond Christian appeared for the respondent. Chancellor George, delivering the judgment said: “The uncomplicated nature of the facts in this appeal belies the legal problems that have arisen. The facts as presented by the State at the trial were as follows.” “Oswald Tappin, aged 18 years, was sitting alongside the deceased Elizabeth Griffith on a plank next to a step in a yard in Barr Street, Albouystown.” “It was about 7.30 p.m and there was a blackout. The accused who was playing cards under the stairs of another house in the yard came up to them. He had a piece of wood in his hand. He expressed his displeasure to the deceased about something that she had done earlier. She replied that the worst that he could do was to lash her. He thereupon struck her on her head in the vicinity of the temple with the piece of wood.
All this evidence came from Tappin, who was the only eye witness.” “The medical evidence was that this blow resulted in her death. The appellant was charged with the offence of murder and was convicted of that offence by an assize jury on October 22, 1987. “It is against this conviction and sentence that he now appeals to the court. The other witnesses who gave evidence at the trial were all relatives of the deceased, viz her mother, sister and step-father. At the material time they were all in the home, which is in the same yard, and the deceased had lived with them. The substance of the evidence was that about the time when Tappin said that the accused had struck the deceased, they had heard her moaning or shouting “Mummy, Mummy, look how Bull come and lash me” or words to that effect.” “Several grounds of appeal were argued. The first challenges the adequacy of the judge’s direction on the issue of the many inconsistencies, most of them unexplained, between the deposition of the witness Tappin and the evidence he gave at the trial. “More especially it is contended that the trial judge failed
to give the jury any sufficient guidance as to their approach to a consideration of such inconsistencies and the effect which they should have on his evidence at the trial, especially having regard to his insensitive and irresponsible statements that he just says things for the sake of saying them and that he says the first thing that comes to his mind.” “Among the many inconsistencies in the present case were the following: (i) This witness said that he had known the accused for one year before the incident, but told the magistrate that he had known him for only three months before the occurrence. He explained this obvious difference in testimonies by saying that he meant that he had known the accused one year before the date of the trial. But this clearly was a hopeless attempt to explain away the inconsistency as the trial had commenced on October 14, 1987, some 2 ½ years after the incident. (ii) He said at the trial that when he arrived at the deceased’s home at about 7 p.m on May 11, 1985, he had called out for her but had to wait for about five minutes before she appeared, but in his deposition, he said that when he arrived there she was already seated on the plank on the bridge leading to her home. (iii) At the trial his evidence was that he told no

one of the incident leading to the deceased’s death except his mother, but in his deposition he did not make any such exception. (iv)He said in evidence that he had given the police a description of the accused, but in his deposition he stated to the contrary. (v) His evidence was that the weapon used resembled a baseball bat but in his deposition he said he was unable to describe it.” “The trial judge catalogued these several and other inconsistencies between this witness’s evidence and his previous statements, but failed to give appropriate guidance to the jury as to the approach that they should adopt when considering his evidence.” “AS regards the first of these, listed above, she merely said that “from the sum total of that it seems that he only knew the accused three months before the incident.“ “This was clearly the wrong approach and must have conveyed to the jury the impression that they could act on the deception evidence of the witness in preference to his evidence at the trial, even if he did not accept the former as true.” “The submission that ‘assuming the hearsay statement had been properly admitted no proper directions were given to the jury is by now of course academic, but it is one which clearly would have succeeded in as much as no directions were given to the jury on the possibility of concoction or fabrication by the victim to her advantage or the disadvantage of the accused, R. vAndrews (Supra) clearly enjoins a trial judge to ‘make it clear to the jury that it is for them to decide what was said and to be sure that the witnesses were not mistaken in what they believed had been said. Further they must be satisfied that the declarant did not concoct or distort to his advantage or the disadvantage of the accused’ the statement relied upon and where there is material to raise the issue that he was not activated by any malice or illwill.’ No direction whatsoever along these lines was given, and this submission, though in the circumstances and for the reasons I have given I say is largely academic, is one nonetheless well taken.” “I have not of course dealt with the additional points raised by Mr. McKay, namely the inadequacy of the trial judge’s directions on the question of identification and the way the jury ought to have approached the manifold inconsistencies and contradictions, arising out of Tappin’s evidence. I endorse with respect the conclusions (that is to say the adequacy of the trial judge’s directions on the question of identification , but the lack of it on the question of inconsistencies and contradictions in Tappin’s evidence) reached by the learned Chancellor and my brother Kennard J. A. Nothing that I may say likely to add to the thouroughness with which they have each dealt with these questions.” “For these reasons I would accordingly allow the appeal, quash the conviction and set aside the sentence of death.”

WAKE IN THE COUNTRY G
reat Aunt Polly died at age ninety-eight. She had lived all her life in the countryside and never wanted to visit the city. She loved the innocence and simplicity of country life. She had requested that when she departed this world she be buried in the country. Relatives came from all over and from overseas. Wake would be kept for two nights preceding the funeral. All preparations were made. This saw Polly being put into a box and covered in ice. One day before the funeral she was washed then wrapped in a clean white cotton sheet and laid out on a bed upstairs. Cotton was then knotted 10-20 times and wrapped in the sheet with Polly. A relative was appointed to watch the dead. This person was expected to stay awake. If he happened to fall asleep it was believed that the dead would begin to swallow the cotton. Each knot swallowed would represent a relative who will die in the near future. The house itself went through a mini transformation. All photographs were turned down or turned to face the wall. Mirrors were covered and flowers were put outside. For this short period nobody wanted to eat ice. A nephew who was a cabinet maker made the casket and clothes for the dead. The wakes were well attended due to the old lady’s popularity and the abundance of food and drinks available to all. For the last night of the wake Polly was lying in state upstairs. There, relatives and friends would visit her. Whenever someone went up to see her, on their return to the gathering one could detect a noticeable lull in their activities and mood. The house was full and the yard was filling up fast. It became obvious that not too many people were staying on the outskirts. As it got later everyone on the outskirts came closer and closer to the house. The dark exterior seemed to force them towards the light. On the stroke of midnight it began to rain. It fell heavily and violently driving a chilly breeze. Older folks nodded their grey heads and murmured that their friend was crying. As the downpour increased, everyone ran for the cover of the wake house. Cold and cramped they continued their vigil. Meanwhile, cook-up was on the stove and drinks were being served. Dominoes and cards were engaging the attention of some of the men. Other villagers stood around in small groups chatting while the children ran all over creating quite a din. Suddenly there was a power outage. In the country, power outages could last anytime from 24 hours to a week. Candles were lit and the wake continued. Polly’s son Benjamin was seventy. He lived in the same village. His home was situated a few streets away from his mother’s. He was old so he took his time with everything
he did. Tonight he was going over to the wake. He knew he would be late. By the time he was ready to leave rain was pouring and a sudden blackout came. Slowly he lit a few candles and rummaged around for his old rain coat. He had not used it in a long time so was forced to give it a few shakes to get rid of any resident insects like scorpions, centipedes or tarantulas. Personally he did not mind a few cockroaches. He put on the big black coat, pulled on his long-boots and then tugged the hood over his silver grey hair. Head down to avoid the harsh raindrops, he shuffled slowly over to Polly’s home. Benjamin took his time getting there. You see, he was partially blind in his left eye and the right eye was swiftly catching up with the other. Turning into the wake yard, he
shuffled noisily towards the door. SHUFFLE! SCRAPE! The strange noise was coming from the front of the dark yard. It was pitch black outside so they could see nothing. SCRAPE! SCRATCH! SHUFFLE! The ominous noise drew closer and seemed to bring with it some amount of dread. All eyes turned towards the door. Benjamin arrived at the door but couldn’t see it clearly. He reached out blindly and felt his way inside. His hands came into contact with someone. “Who dat!” His voice was a touch above a croak. There was no response only deadly silence. The old, hooded man stumbled into the crowded room and looked blindly around. At that instant the large hood slipped down covering half of his face. Now he could see nothing. By the time the strange, searching hands came out of the darkness everyone was on their feet staring fixedly at the doorway. Suddenly a dark ghostly figure lunged into the room its huge hands swinging one way then the other searching for a victim. “Who dat!” There was no response because they were all fleeing for their lives. Bodies went through windows, out of doors and into any available hiding place. Four people managed to cram themselves through the backdoor at one time. This was quite a feat because Tessa was among the four. Tessa was over 300 pounds. By the time Benjamin was able to remove his hood the wake house was empty. He shrugged his tired shoulders and trudged upstairs to sit with his mother. A shocker awaited him. The body was gone. In its wake was a hastily unwrapped sheet.

MEET AUNT ROSE…
Sukhia ‘Rose’ Shioprasad
E
By Telesha Ramnarine
She worked really hard to care for her children
IGHTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD Sukhia Shioprasad, also known as Aunt Rose, sets a sterling example for parents when it comes to caring for their children and taking decisions that are in their best interests. She was just 22 years old when her husband, Mr. Nandlall (only name), died of problems related to his heart. She chose not to remarry for fear of ending up with a drunkard or someone who would make her life and that of her children miserable. Instead, she opted to work hard and raise her three daughters (Chandrowtie, Lilowtie, and Rajowtie) on her own. “I wuk like a man to look them after”, she told the Chronicle in an interview recently. Born and raised at Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara, on May 23, 1933, Aunt Rose attended Vryheid’s Lust All Age School and spent a few years there. She fondly recalled how she got away at times and went to work in the backdam. She enjoyed chopping cane, weeding grass, bailing punts, etc. Aunt Rose worked from 6 am to 6 pm to make ends meet, but the hard work was worth it. “When white man bin ah rule, yo bin ah eat good. You didn’t have to punish for anything,” she expressed. Her loving husband, whom she only got to spend a few years with, died suddenly one day after work. According to Aunt Rose, he apparently fatigued himself at work, causing the complications. She married Mr. Nandlall when she was just about 15 years old and still remembers to this day how he supported her when she had to go to work. In addition to doing his own work, he helped her cook for the children, since she had to be at work for 6 am. “We were two good company,” she said. After his death, Aunt Rose continued to work hard for the sake of the children and she ensured that they all went to school. “I always make sure the pickni them get them food first, even if me na get,” she related. She reasoned that God is the one who gave her three children and so she had to take good care of them. Aunt Rose worked hard to build her home at Success, on the East Coast Demerara, paying $2 a week for it. Nevertheless, she

said she chose to live in Dharm Shala (a home for the elderly and infirm) located in Albouystown. One of her daughters lives in the house and Aunt Rose would visit on the weekends. She has been living at Dharm Shala for many years, she said, and has been between the branch in New Amsterdam and Georgetown. In the days gone by, she served as cook, at times cooking three gallons of rice per day. Now, though, she said she doesn’t do anything but sit back and relax. Aunt Rose is still entitled to an ‘estate pension’ which one of her daughters collects..

Will the heat between Karan Singh Grover and Bipasha Basu in Alone add to their link-up rumours? Apart from all the scary scenes, Karan and Bipasha will also have some steamy moments in the horror film… A new horror movie, Alone, is just around the corner and we are thrilled for reasons more than one. Firstly the film marks the debut of television heartthrob Karan Singh Grover. Secondly the sizzling chemistry between the debutante and Bipasha Basu in the trailer is too hot to handle! And lastly the film looks like a good balance between sexy and scary! The scary bits from the recently released Alone trailer spooked us but we are equally excited to see Karan and Bipasha’s sexy romance in the film. Ever since rumours about Harman and Bips’ fall-out and Karan and Jennifer’s separation started doing rounds, sources close to the Alone couple reveal that sparks flew between the co-stars. Now the steamy chemistry between Karan and Bipasha will only add fire to the buzz about them dating each other. Whether on not the alleged link-up is a publicity gimmick or a real thing, we are yet to find out.
Bipasha Basu: Alone is going to be my boldest film that I have ever done till now The Alone actress talks about the amount of love and passion used in this film Actress Bipasha Basu may have done bold scenes in her previous releases, but she feels her forthcoming movie Alone is her boldest movie so far. In Alone, directed by Bhushan Patel, the Bengali beauty has shed all her inhibitions to shoot some passionate and steamy scenes with her co-star Karan Singh Grover. ”It is going to be my boldest film that I have ever done till now,” Bipasha, who has shown her bold side in films like Jism, Raaz, Raaz 3D among others, said. ”It’s a passionate love story. It is definitely a horror genre and will scare you, but it revolves around a love story… a love story between a man, a woman and a ghost,” she added. Further, Bipasha said that
the audience w o u l d love the film as “they will see lots of passion, lots of love in it.” Off late, Bipasha has been doing horror films. When asked if she isn’t afraid of getting typecast, she said: “This business is about typecast. You guys and everybody wants to typecast. When you talk about biggest actors like Salman Khan or Akshay Kumar… everybody seems to be doing their same kind of film. So everyone is typecast.” “It’s okay to be stereotype here (in Bollywood). If audiences want to see you that way, definitely you can’t take that away from them. So you have to give them what they want to see. “At the same time you have your own creative juices flowing as an actor and you
decide that you want to do something different. So you need to keep a balance of both,” she added. Alone marks the Bollywood debut of popular TV actor Karan Singh Grover. It is slated to release Jan 16 next year.
Why is Sangeeta Bijlani upset with Salman Khan? Though Khan’s ex-girlfriend was spotted at Arpita’s starry reception, all is not well between the two. Read on to know why…. Salman Khan’s darling sister Arpita Khan got married last week in Hyderabad at the royal Falaknuma Palace and it was indeed a grand affair. Many Bollywood bigwigs made their presence felt at the big fat Khan wedding including Katrina Kaif. Yes, the Kick actor’s ex-girlfriend
was very much present when Arpita took pheras with her beau Aayush Sharma. Frankly speaking, it wasn’t surprising because the Ek Tha Tiger costars have been cordial to each other ever since they parted ways romantically. But what was really surprising is the fact that Salman’s another ex-flame Sangeeta Bijlani was no were to be found at Arpita’s wedding. Despite the fact that the Being Human star is still very close to Sangeeta, the latter was not
invited to Salman’s sister’s shaadi. And this we hear has miffed Sangeeta. What’s worse is that though Salman maintained the wedding would be an intimate affair with family and close friends in attendance, a lot of people were invited who weren’t even close of the bride and groom. Our khabroo told us that a certain high-profile guest was also present at Arpita’s wedding apparently made a lot of people awkward with his antics. Well, if the guy in question was invited, then Sangeeta Bijlani sure should have made it to the guest list, hai na? After all, she has been friends with Dabangg Khan forever and also shares great rapport with Khan-daan. That’s not all! Bhai’s another ex-girlfriend (keep guessing) is also upset with him for the same reason. Well, we don’t blame Salman’s exes. Because Arpita-Aayush’s wedding was supposed to be a close knit affair but eventually it turned out to be a gala event. And what’s really sad is that those who are actually close to the Bajrangi Bhaijaan actor didn’t receive an invitation.

You might favor good old caffeine, or new-age nutritional supplements. Tom Rice, a London-based film producer in his late 20s, has a new routine. It includes a little fish oil, a shot of espresso, and 800mg of the cognitive-enhancement drug Piracetam. "It enables you to think quicker and feel sharper," says Rice. "Although I've only started recently so it's hard to quantify the full effects." Rice has held a longstanding interest in nootropics-substances that improve brain function-as a means of enhancing his performance in a demanding business that requires tireless application. The producer emphasizes the value of healthy sleep and balanced diet, but through research and networking, has also developed an open attitude to cognitive enhancement.

Microsoft: Cheap PCs are here to stay PC prices are the lowest they've ever been this holiday season. But even after the deals end, cheap PCs will be around for a long time.Concerned about the long-term impact of fading PC sales on its cash cow Windows and Office businesses, Microsoft has loosened its grip a bit on PC makers. That's why Windows PCs have slipped below the $200 mark recently. Microsoft's Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner acknowledged that Microsoft has been charging PC manufacturers less to install Windows on their computers at the Credit Suisse Technology Conference in Scottsdale, Ariz., last week. Microsoft has historically charged PC makers about $50 per Windows license. But PCs are an incredibly low-margin business; you can't sell a $200 PC if Microsoft is going to be pocketing a quarter of the price. Can you?

Dr. Wernher von Braun - Was one of the most important rocket developers and champions of space exploration
Wernher von Braun (1912– 1977) was one of the most important rocket developers and champions of space exploration during the period between the 1930s and the 1970s. As a youth he became enamoured with the possibilities of space exploration by reading the science fiction of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and from the science fact writings of Hermann Oberth, whose 1923 classic study, Die Rakete zu den Planetenräumen (By Rocket to Space), prompted young von Braun to master calculus and trigonometry so he could understand the phys-
ics of rocketry. From his teenage years, von Braun had held a keen interest in space flight, becoming involved in the German rocket society, Verein fur Raumschiffarht (VfR), as early as 1929. As a means of furthering his desire to build large and capable rockets, in 1932 he went to work for the German army to develop ballistic missiles. While engaged in this work, von Braun received a Ph.D. in physics on July 27, 1934. Von Braun is well known as the leader of what has been called the “rocket team” which developed the V–2 ballistic missile for the Nazis
during World War II. The V–2s were manufactured at a forced labor factory called Mittelwerk. Scholars are still reassessing his role in these controversial activities. Click for details. The brainchild of von Braun’s rocket team operating at a secret laboratory at Peenemünde on the Baltic coast, the V–2 rocket was the immediate antecedent of those used in space exploration programs in the United States and the Soviet Union. A liquid propellant missile extending some 46 feet in length and weighing 27,000 pounds, the V-2 flew at speeds in excess of 3,500
miles per hour and delivered a 2,200-pound warhead to a target 500 miles away. First flown in October 1942, it was employed against targets in Europe beginning in September 1944. By the beginning of 1945, it was obvious to von Braun that Germany would not achieve victory against the Allies, and he began planning for the postwar era. Before the Allied capture
of the V–2 rocket complex, von Braun engineered the surrender of 500 of his top rocket scientists, along with plans and test vehicles, to the Americans. For fifteen years after World War II, von Braun worked with the U.S. Army in the development of ballistic missiles. As part of a military operation called Project Paperclip, he and his rocket team were scooped up
from defeated Germany and sent to America where they were installed at Fort Bliss, Texas. There they worked on rockets for the U.S. Army, launching them at White Sands Proving Ground, New Mexico. In 1950 von Braun’s team moved to the Redstone Arsenal near Huntsville, Ala., where they built the Army’s Jupiter ballistic missile. In 1960, his rocket development center transferred from the Army to the newly established NASA and received a mandate to build the giant Saturn rockets. Accordingly, von Braun became director of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and the chief architect of the Saturn V launch vehicle, the superbooster that would propel Americans to the Moon. Von Braun also became one of the most prominent spokesmen of space exploration in the United States during the 1950s. In 1970, NASA leadership asked von Braun to move to Washington, D.C., to head up the strategic planning effort for the agency. He left his home in Huntsville, Ala., but in 1972 he decided to retire from NASA and work for Fairchild Industries of Germantown, Md. He died in Alexandria, Va., on June 16, 1977.

Are Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma trying to avoid each other?
Things do not seem to be fine between the two B-town actresses That Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma do not share a friendly vibe is known to all. All thanks to a certain Mr Singh. So when the two ladies shared the same roof recently, we didn’t expect them to have a oh-so-nice-meet-you attitude. And that is exactly what happened.
While Dippy has always maintained that she is cordial towards the Bombay Velvet actress, her actions speak otherwise.Deepika and Anushka were at the recent IPTL match held in Delhi. However, the two were so near, yet so far. Look at the picture above and you’ll know what we are saying. We know that Deepika and Aamir played with Tennis
legends including Roger Federer. Aamir’s PK co-star Anushka was there with their director Rajkumar Hirani and the two perhaps cheering for Aamir. Candice Bergen-One cool, eternally classy lady One cool, eternally classy lady, Candice Bergen, born May 9, 1946 in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California, was elegantly poised for trendy "ice princess" stardom when she first arrived on the screen, but she gradually reshaped that dĂŠbutante image both on- and off-camera. A staunch, outspoken feminist with a decisive edge, she went on to take a sizable portion of these contradicting qualities to film and, most particularly, to late 1980s television. Candice Bergen was born in Beverly Hills, California, to famed ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and former actress and
"Chesterfield Girl" Frances Bergen (nĂŠe Westerman). Her paternal grandparents were Swedish, and her mother was of German and English descent. Bergen was surrounded by Hollywood glitter and glamour from day one. At the age of 6, she made her radio debut on her father's show. Of extreme privilege, she attended Westlake School for Girls in Los Angeles, the Cathedral School in Washington, D.C and then went abroad to the Montesano (finishing) School in Switzerland. Although she began taking art history and creative drawing at the University of Pennsylvania, she did not graduate due to
less-than-stellar grades. In between studies, she also worked as a Ford model in order to buy cameras for her new passion-photography. Her Grace Kelly-like glacial beauty deemed her an ideal candidate for Ivy League patrician roles, and Candice made an auspicious film debut while still a college student portraying the Vassar-styled lesbian member of Sidney Lumet's The Group (1966) in an ensemble that included other lovely up-and-comers including Joan Hackett, Jessica Walter and Joanna Pettet. The film drew positive reviews and was the 25th highest grossing picture of the year. Candice's second film in 1966, The Sand Pebbles (1966), was also a commercial hit and was nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Film offers started coming her way, both here and especially abroad (spurred on by her love for travel). Other than her top-notch roles as the mistress of an unhappily married newscaster in the French romantic
Candice Bergen drama Live for Life (1967) and as the co-ed who comes between Jack Nicholson and Art Garfunkel in Carnal Knowledge (1971) her performances were deemed a bit too aloof to really stand out among the crowd. While the bus ride was a refreshing treat and a nice “getaway” from my always busy schedule, it was rudely interrupted with a few unpleasantries as our ‘speed crazy bus driver’ dashed in and out of traffic, honking his horns at pedestrians, and other drivers who would respond to his brazen intrusion with loud obscenities and ‘lewd finger gesticulations’ that suggested their horrid and vulgar intentions. When the bus rolled into Cottage some time later, I was seething with anger at his reckless maneuvers and flushing hotly from the tons of vulgar responses thrown his way as a
ich, dense foliage flew by on both sides of the road as the speeding minibus made its way to Mahaicony and I was one of the many passengers that were enjoying the fresh country breeze and the almost mesmerising view of sprawling pastures and coconut trees swaying in the wind. I was bound for Cottage Village located some 37 miles from Georgetown, and truly anticipating my interacting with residents there who was said to be content, jovial and very hospitable. I gazed lazily at the large chunks of mud left on the road side my roving cattle and the many tractors and trucks that traversed the areas and felt this was evidence of the village’s high intensity agriculture activity. It was a tussle with the minibuses on the road to overtake the many trucks laden with rice and paddy from their many harvests along the countryside. Now folks, cottage is nicely bordered by the equally appealing Perseverance to the east and Zealand to the west. From my many treks around Guyana I would have learnt over time that the prettiest location I have discovered are actually the villages that are sometimes secluded in the middle of ‘nowhere’ or the very dreamy and exotic villages that are not known to many. It’s always a pleasure to explore these pristine sites and I look forward to such rare opportunities with great excitement and anticipation. What I have noticed also is that some of these villages are not Luxurious coconut palms sway in the breeze often listed on our priority list of places to visit and I cannot refrain from saying that this is a ‘downright shame.’ So here I was again my heart thumping like crazy as I was result of his irresponsible actions. yet again give one of the wildest and most scary bus ride ever by a driver seemed intent on having his vehicle take wings and Exploring The Village fly off into the afternoon sky. a long time to come, since in all my treks around Guyana, I have never really witnessed a village sleep in broad daylight as the sun seem to scorch its environs with merciless intensity. In the afternoons the village is abuzz with activity as housewives and young girls rush to get groceries from the very few roadside stalls and outlets available. But villagers in Cottage most times have to journey to the neighbouring village of Perseverance or to Central Mahaicony some five miles away to get such supplies since there are hardly many opportunities in the village for choices in this arena. What impressed me as being quite strange was that this village appeared almost dead and void of activity, which was not a customary thing for East Coast Demerara villages. There was not even an animal in the sprawling pasture behind the relatively sparse houses; and as the broiling sun beat down on just a few sheep grazing here and there, I was beginning to think that the silence of the village was just a bit too eerie for comfort. I was a bit taken back by the extreme quiet of this small village and wondered where in heaven name all the residents could have been. But soon after investigations revealed that residents preferred to remain in doors unless they were engaged in errands that warranted their presence outside of their homes, or were taken up with their varying professions in surrounding villages. Chatting With Residents A visibly tired Sharon Cummings who spoke to us from an open window of her home explained that she was home alone with her threeyear-old daughter while her common-law husband Patrick Fraser was out plying his trade as a labourer at a rice mill
some distance away. She noted however that while his profession can be tedious and very competitive at times, it however brings in a sizeable daily dollar that somehow manages to take care of their needs in the home. “Everybady does do either wan jab or anotha in Cottage. Because everybody have to survive somehow or the other. Me husband does go out there every day fuh mek ends meet, and some days he does comeback with almost nothing because is plenty people ah fight fuh duh de same wuk. beautiful and peaceful location where residents live in harmony and in great camaraderie with each other. I was welcomed there with wide hugs and smiles by the not so many residents who were ready to engage me in pleasant conversation. My first stop was at the home of 60-year-old Enid Abrams, a grandmother who still bore much merriment in her eyes. This contented soul explained while villagers do not enjoy the ‘finer things of life.’ They are contented to live in humble happiness enjoying the best life had to offer. “We ain’t get no fancy business places or big time shops and suck likes. But we exist quite fine and in peace with each other. In this village, everyone looks out for the other and there are no racial differences here. In Cottage, everyone live as one….” She chatted with me on a bench beneath her house and I could see a pot bubbling on the fireside in her yard emitting an aroma that caused my stomach to growl in anticipation. She explained that she was cooking her favourite meal of ‘split peas cook up rice,’ done nicely with fresh coconut milk which has been known to add that extra ‘zing’ to meals in the countryside. Being an ‘old soul’ who makes hygiene a priority she was also burning her garbage since no garbage trucks seem to visit the area. She however noted that she was somewhat concerned about the state of some drains in the village which have become overgrown with vegetation and can leading to flooding should the rains come in torrential downpours. Forty-three-ear-old John Simpson was all smiles when I stopped to chat with him as he was enjoying the afternoon breeze on the verandah belonging to his daughter-in-law with whom he is staying. He explained that life in the village was good and pleasant despite the fact that the village did not possess the facilities to facilitate entertainment development and sports. “Bai dis village really nice and comfahtable, and real quiet. Me really ah enjy livin hea and me nah want guh nowhea else. Awe dese nah get dem fancy places like dem atha village but ah we ah live good hea stil. Awe ah get clean wata fuh drink, electricity, and if awe want sport we just gat fuh catch a car and guh Mahaicony wha dem rum shap and disco deh plenty…. Me really like dis place fuh live in bai…. Some residents are calling on relevant authorities to build a playfield in the village for youth since the village is the home to some very talented upcoming cricketers. While this may be so, a few mothers lamented that the boys are not able to maximise or develop their sporting skills since there are not proper facilities there to make this possible. Cottage is certainly lacking in terms of apparent business potential as can be judged from its distinct infrastructure, but villagers are certainly not missing out on anything in particular since they can travel to Central Mahaicony or maybe Mahaica which serves as an ‘economic hub’ that can ultimately satisfy their entertainment, relaxation, social and of course economic needs. This village is nestled in Mahaicony which is a populated place The estimated terrain elevation above sea level is said to be just above 1 metre.
and simplicity. The minute I stepped into the village I was swept up in a whirlpool of lush green foliage, surrounded by startling plants thriving naturally alongside bubbling drains and small trenches. Healthy looking coconut palms waved lazily in the wind, and in each yard there was a bright fusion of fruit trees. Sheep and cattle grazed lazily in open fields, seemingly savouring their afternoon meals with relish, assured that there was much to serve around for months to come. In some yards just a few young children dashed about playing, while on street corner a group of elderly men stood chatting, opening their mouths and throwing back their heads as they bellowed their mirth over jovial jokes and mirthful tales. Cottage Before Time Today Cottage is a striking fusion of colourful little cottages and a peaceful ambience. Just in case you are wondering what the village was like ‘donkey years ago,’ elderly Theophelus Primo who has lived there all his life was more than ready to tell with an almost boyish gleam in his eyes and he took himself back to the days when he was a little starry eyed boy chasing after lizards and mongoose in the wide open pastures. “I barn and grow up in this village and ah neva left it fuh guh live nowhere else. In me time as a lil bai if the village had ten house he had nuff… The whole place was full ah bush and plenty fruit trees like wha yuh still ah see he today. All we could ah see was nuff bush, tall trees and big wide open fields. We nah bin get no shap and dem thing dah. We had to travel far fuh get grocery and good drinking watah. Most people used tuh bile de watah fram de riva and use it fuh drink and to cook food. We nah had no street lights and de place use d to be ‘pitch black’ at night time…” Mr. Primo explained that as time went by persons descended on the location and began to erect houses; hence today the village is one of the more pleasant little hideouts in Mahaicony. Although this village is still caught in the grips of gradual development it still holds its almost majestic aura of simplicity that is further accentuated the serene demeanour of residents who exist in great humility. They are employed as farmers, a few carpenters and masons, while a large number are employed at various entities outside the village. Entertainment This village has no possible avenue for any vibrant form of

Legendary international boxer Terrence Halley, rained praises on the promising potentials of the small village entertainment but that does not seem to bother residents since they can hop into a ‘short-drop car’ and travel to neighbouring villages and have a blast on weekends. The elderly folks in most cases are contented to purchase their alcohol and drink it in the confines of their homes as they watch television programmes or listen to ‘oldies’ via tape records or small stereo sets. The youths however prefer to enjoy the many concept parties hosted elsewhere and from time to time or would enjoy ‘chilling’ by one of the many hangout bars that can be found alongside the Berbice area. They eagerly anticipate the massive live shows and parties that are customarily hosted by various promoters at the Mhaicony Community Centre Ground. Church Influence Church influence plays a dominant role in the lives of the people within this community. They established themselves where the population was the densest and where bright prospects pertaining to religious and cultural development existed. The development of the political environment grew out of circumstances, which unveiled themselves. As a new people became engrossed with new aspirations, the horizon was necessarily limited. Gradually as education spread, the avenues for expansion and development widened. What appeared distant eventually came within grasp as time rolled on. Missionaries then are to be given significant mentioning, as they were the first to diffuse edifying influence and scholastic achievement. Most of the residents in this village however are Christians by origin. Conclusion It may be sometimes bare of activity, or lack the customary buzz of the more developed villages. But one thing about this location is that it is distinct in its simplicity and the aura of content and humility exhibited by residents.
Touching Down In no time I arrived at the outskirts of the village and disembarked hurriedly, sending the bus driver some venomous stares as I did so. He of course paid me no mind and just busied himself with collecting the fares from passengers for fear of losing them if they were just as annoyed. A young man indicated to me just where the borders of the village were and there I was breathing deeply the fresh, crisp ‘country breeze’ as my eyes took in with wonder the cluster of little homely cottages that made of this small village. Cottage has about just over sixteen households with a population that has not reached three hundred, according to residents. While the village is predominantly inhabited by Negroes, a small percentage of mixed races can also be found. Enthralling Beauty This village does not feature majestic buildings, posh shops, fancy stores or elegant boutiques like many others, but what it may top the list with is its quiet existence, fuelled by the humility and charm of its residents and dazzling beauty

Candice Bergen-One cool, eternally ... long-winded and notoriously long-titled Italian drama A Night Full of Rain (1978); and the soapy, inferior sequel to Love Story (1970), Oliver's Story (1978). However, things picked up toward the end of the decade when the seemingly humorless Candice took a swipe at comedy. She made history as the first female guest host of Saturday Night Live and then showed an equally amusing side of her in the dramedy Starting Over (1979) as Burt Reynolds tone-deaf ex-wife, enjoying a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination in the process. In 1980, Candice married Louis Malle, the older (by 14 years) French director. They had one child, a daughter named Chloe, in 1985. She and Jacqueline Bisset co-starred in George Cukor's Rich and Famous (1981), in which her mother Frances Bergen could be glimpsed in a Malibu party scene, but the film was not a success. She reunited with former co-star Burt Reynolds in the police thriller _Stick_, but the film was a critical and financial flop. Candice also made her Broadway debut in 1985 replacing Sigourney Weaver in David Rabe's black comedy Hurlyburly (1998). In the late 1980s, Candice hit a new career plateau on comedy television as the spiky title role on Murphy Brown (1988), giving great gripe as the cynical and competitive anchor/reporter of a television magazine show. With a superlative supporting cast around her, the CBS sitcom went the distance (ten seasons) and earned Candice a whopping five Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards. Television movie roles also came her way as a result with colourful roles ranging from the evil Arthurian temptress "Morgan Le Fey" to an elite, high-classed madam -- all many moons away from her initial white-gloved debutantes of the late 1960s. Malle's illness and subsequent death from cancer in 1995 resulted in Candice maintaining a very low profile for quite some time. Since then, however, she has returned with a renewed vigour (or should I say vinegar) on television, with many of her characters enjoyable extensions of her "Murphy Brown" curmudgeon. After years of working exclusively in television, she returned to

the big screen, playing a former beauty queen who attempts to foil Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality (2000), and Reese Witherspoon's pretentious would-be mother-in-law in Sweet Home Alabama (2002). She has continued chomping at the comedy bit, appearing in The In-Laws (2003), The Women (2008), and Bride Wars (2009). In 2005, she joined the cast of Boston Legal (2004) playing a brash, no-nonsense lawyer while trading barbs with a much less serious William Shatner. She played this role for five seasons, receiving nominations for two Emmys, a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Since 2000, she has been married to her second husband, Marshall Rose, who is a Manhattan real estate developer.

– DIYs, Beauty and Fashion Tips with Raveena Mangal THE saying goes, ‘no pain, no gain’ and we women know indulging in quality expensive beauty products can be a pain, but we go to have that gain! Read on for great tips on how to get the most from your beauty products. 1. White eye shadow is a great choice if you really want your eyes to stand out. You just have to layer your lid with white eye shadow and then add the colours that you want. The white will also keep those other colors from rubbing off before the end of the day. 2. Of course, hair conditioners will take great care of your hair, but try to use it instead of shaving gel for smooth and clean shave. Just apply a hair conditioner on your legs and shave easily and smoothly! 3. Your favourite bronzer is good for more than carving out some cheekbones. Swipe it across your eyes for an instantly bronzed, glowing shadow. 4. Eye cream can double as an instant lip moisturiser; don’t knock till you’ve tried it! 5. Do you have a favourite rosy cream blush but wear minimal lip colour? Try dabbing cream blush on your lips for a lovely pout. Alternatively, if you love your lippy but forgot the blush, use your ring finger to pick up color from your lipstick and dab it onto your cheeks. Sheer and creamy formulations work really well for this.

Growing part 5 Culinary Herbs By Clifford Stanley
Thyme a very popular culinary herb in Guyana, the Caribbean and worldwide is very easy to grow. Basically the thyme plant grows itself. But it's hard to grow thyme from seeds because of slow, uneven germination. It's easier to buy the plants or take some cuttings from a friend. The thyme plants, whether fine leaf or broad leaf, can be grown in a container indoors or outdoors or in a relatively small area in the yard. The fine leaf thyme grows from a sprig planted in the ground. Some people soak the broad leaf thyme in water and allow it to sprout roots before plant-
ing it into the ground. The thyme plants are not only hardy ie: requiring minimal care, but are blessed with longevity. As has been said previously, either fresh or dried, thyme leaves flavour soups, gravies, stews, sauces, sausages, dressings and many other dishes. With respect to harvesting, once planted and mature the plants can provide seasoning, in the form of leaves for ten years or even longer. If you are a beekeeper or just wish to attract more honeybees to your garden, you should include growing thyme in your garden design plans. Thyme planting, along with attracting pollinators, will help several other garden favourites thrive. It has been said for example that it is best to grow the thyme plant alongside or near cabbage plants. Thyme when planted near cabbage helps deter cabbage worms and white fly because the thyme plants attract bees and beneficial predator insects. Planting thyme alongside of cabbage can therefore eliminate the use of chemical insecticides for the average home gardener. It has also been said that burning thyme in the home gets rid of insects in your house. Thyme has been traditionally planted for home use. The plant, usually a single plant or perhaps two, is nearby and cooks take off a few leaves for use in the kitchen. In recent times with the growth of the agro-processing sub-sector, many farmers are growing thyme for commercial purposes. The growth of this sub-sector therefor offers value added benefits for the grower of the amazing culinary herb the thyme.

Walterine Inniss - The black cake expert By Michel Outridge

Black cake maker, Walterine Inniss comes highly recommended is Walterine Inniss. Since her girlhood days she learned the know-how by looking at her mother preparing black cake from scratch as she would ‘bake up a storm’ for Steamer Day, the day in which the ferry would arrive from the city at Stevedore Market at Hosorro Hill in Region 1 (Barima/ Waini). A mother of one, Inniss said she uses all local ingredients to make the best black cake one can ever have and would ask for more and finds it quite a fulfilling task. She told this publication that having been involved in black cake making for so long she has mastered the art and knows that her black cake is one of the best and enjoy meeting the catering needs of customers, who would make orders since the start of December annually. Inniss said her siblings also participated in black cake making and it was like a ‘family affair’ where all they gathered around their mother to assist her and it was quite good way to spend time with the family. As the years went by, Inniss related that her mother has since passed way but left something invaluable with her, that is, black cake making and is something she feels compelled to do since it brings back cheerful memories of her young days with her family. In Guyana, Christmas is not enjoyed without traditional black cake, ginger and the likes and this year if you have not ordered your black cake yet you can do so by calling Inniss on telephone number 644-6093 to place your order. She said a half pound costs only $3000 and it is a wholesome, rich and tasty black cake you will ever have.

… from a teen’s point of view!
Closing off the school term:
Hello there! I hope that you all enjoyed your school parties but kept the fun clean! To my adult readers I hope you all are enjoying whatever Christmas preparation you have undertaken. Well, this is the end of the school term for most of us unless you have to go to school to complete unfinished work. Most of you guys should have received your progress report for the term; I hope you all have performed to the best of your abilities and remember that next term we should try even harder. If you haven’t done as well as expected then you know that definitely next term you gotta “be on the ball.” Nothing is to be blamed on your teachers, in fact whatever score you got is a result of your input but with the help of others. Also, you have to appreciate the efforts made by your parents because they are the fundamentals of who you are. During this term if we have done something we did not like we should not let it recur, and if we did some-
thing to someone that made them angry or vice versa. We shouldn’t let trivial things break relationships so don’t start the New Year and new term with hatred. Try to make things right over the holidays, because tis the season to be jolly! Also at the end of this term I hope you all have not done anything that would make next term bad or that you would regret later on. It is a common practice that on the last week of school where there is minimal work done, that we youths tend to “get on” but in so doing hope that nothing too extravagant was done. Well that’s all for this week! Look out next week for my article about my little trip to the Children’s Home with my class and hopefully pictures and I’m also asking you all to support Reesa Sooklall- the reigning Miss Guyana Talented Teen, my classmate who will be representing Guyana at the Miss Caribbean Talented Teen (See her Facebook page for more information).
Quote for the week: (Unknown) “The past is the past, but you should learn from your mistakes- change now- for a brighter future!” See you here again in your favourite and best newspaper in Guyana! Goo!

Reaching into his rear pants pocket, he removes his badge and proudly displays it to the rancher. "See this badge? This badge means I am allowed to go wherever I wish.... On any land.. No questions asked or answers given. Have I made myself clear? Do you understand? " The rancher nods politely, apologizes, and goes about his chores. A short time later, the old rancher hears loud screams and sees the DEA officer running for his life chased by the rancher's big Santa Gertrudis Bull...... With every step the bull is gaining ground on the officer, and it seems likely that he'll get gored before he reaches safety. The officer is clearly terrified. The rancher throws down his tools, runs to the fence and yells at the top of his lungs..... "Your badge... Show him your badge!!"

ARIES - Though action and adventure may call to you, Jupiter’s retrograde phase encourages you to slow down and opt for inner journeys that encourage greater self-knowledge. The emphasis shifts with a focus on exploring those beliefs that affect your creativity and experience of romance. You may feel a desire to be free of rules and regulations, and you might consider working for yourself as opposed to a company or corporation. Don’t act impulsively, though. Take it one step at a time. TAURUS - You’ll be eager to explore ideas for earning more money, and you may be tempted to invest in classes with this aim in mind. Information is key this week, and accessing the knowledge you need could prove a turning point. At home, Jupiter’s retrograde phase may slow down your plans for your house or family. Seeds planted may take longer to come to fruition. Later, a potent transit suggests you may be limited by outdated beliefs. It’s time to replace them. GEMINI - Partnerships and relationships flourish this week as your involvement with others expands. You can expect a lot of encouragement, but try not to promise more than you can deliver. Later, the cosmos encourages you to reflect on deep soul bonds and committed relationships and how much you’re willing to share. Key could be finding the balance between keeping things lighthearted and desiring security and commitment. However, social delights await you over the weekend, with the potential for a love adventure. CANCER - There are advantages to be gained from stepping outside of your comfort zone this week. Say yes to new people, places, and experiences, particularly if you’re looking for a new job or hoping to set up a business for yourself. Meanwhile, Jupiter’s retrograde phase encourages you to ponder the spiritual source of your supply. Doing so could be a revelation. Finally, a revolutionary transit encourages you to take your goals and dreams seriously. Don’t let personal relationships stand in the way of your success. LEO - Creative and romantic opportunities seem well starred, especially early in the week. Yet as Jupiter rewinds in your sign, you may find certain associations or projects a bit too superficial. It’s time to direct your energy to activities and people who have depth and inspire you. Despite this, your social life continues to flourish, as do romantic options. Big questions circle around in your head as you may notice a desire to escape from too much responsibility, but at what cost? VIRGO - Focus on home affairs, plans, and projects that need to get sorted before the holiday week. You may be the one organising get-togethers, especially as people seem to enjoy chilling out at your place. Give yourself a chance for some alone time, as this is when inspiration could strike, bringing solutions to problems and creative ideas. Over the weekend you might be faced with a dilemma, as a potent transit encourages you to be honest about your feelings rather than hold back. LIBRA - Your outlook is upbeat and expectant, with a desire to reach out and connect. As the festive season gets underway it’s time to send cards and messages to those who are dear to your heart, which you’ll enjoy. Jupiter turns retrograde in your social sector, so you may prefer your own company and the chance to reflect at times. Still, there will be enough get-togethers to keep you occupied. Later, ask yourself if you’re resisting an idea whose time has come. SCORPIO - Spend time at home where you can think up ambitious plans and share your ideas with family and friends. You might want to invest in gadgets and other devices that make life easier. Jupiter turns retrograde in your career sector on Monday, so a goal or career move could take longer to materialise. This might not be a bad thing, encouraging you to reflect on what’s best for you. Finally, you might notice how your thoughts affect your well-being for better or worse. SAGITTARIUS - Your responsibilities to others may seem to restrict your freedom and dampen your enthusiasm. If real-life demands weigh you down, perhaps you’ll escape through travel or other adventures. As Jupiter turns retrograde in Leo, you may prefer to acquire more knowledge. Regular meditation and reflection over the weeks ahead can encourage you to review and change outdated beliefs. Avoid impulsive moves over the weekend that might affect your financial security, even if you’re tempted to take a gamble. CAPRICORN - You may want to help out with charity work or volunteer your time in other ways. A focus on your spiritual sector encourages you to be generous, as by giving you will receive. Meanwhile, Venus hikes into your sign on Wednesday, boosting your confidence and making you an attractive option. Later, you may notice a conflict between putting yourself and your own thoughts and feelings first versus doing your duty and making sure you fulfill your responsibilities. You may need to strike a balance. AQUARIUS - Your social life is busy, but you aren’t complaining! With festive get-togethers keeping you busy, you’re in your element. Jupiter turns retrograde in your relationship sector on Monday, so interactions could slow. For instance, a business partnership may see you both acting more independently for a while and learning much as a result. If you’re in a long-term relationship, you may relish more alone time. Finally, the weekend may set you thinking about what’s holding you back from being successful. PISCES - A focus on Sagittarius and your career sector makes this a good time to get your message out to the world, and to be bold and forthright about doing so. When it comes to everyday matters or lifestyle issues, it might be time to journey within to uncover and release anything blocking success. Your social life picks up midweek, with romance looking likelier. Finally, if a friend disapproves of your behaviour, you might wonder why you hang out with him or her.

Madonna Lands Versace Campaign For The Fourth Time: Replaces Lady Gaga
Move over, Gaga! Madonna has reprised her role as the face of the iconic fashion house for the fourth time in a slew of black and white campaign shots. The original Material Girl is still in high demand — just ask Donatella Versace! The designer tapped Madonna, 56, to take over for Lady Gaga, 28, and front Versace’s Spring 2015 campaign — and the images were unveiled just days after the pop star’s edgy shoot for Interview magazine, where she posed totally topless. The iconic singer, (and mom-of-four!), has had the honor of fronting Versace’s campaigns a total of four times throughout the course of her career. Madonna’s Versace Campaign — Fronts Fashion House For The Fourth Time: While she kept her chest concealed for her latest shoot the black-and-white images, (captured by famed photog duo Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott), still have a sexy, edgy vibe that one might not expect to see from a 56-yearold mom-of-four — but Madonna definitely isn’t your average mom. The star posed in NYC for the Spring 2015 campaign, and Donatella said that it is her iconic status that makes her a perfect fit for the job. “Madonna is one of the true icons of Versace. I am thrilled to have my friend and the most powerful and directional artist as the face of Versace for Spring 2015,” she said in a release.
