Publisher's Notes “Having a baby is a life-changer. It gives you a whole other perspective on why you wake up every day. - Taylor Hanson Dear Valued Reader, Welcome to the 67th edition of GEM and the edition where we introduce the finalists of our second annual Cutest Baby Photo Contest. This year was no different as the judges had the unenviable task of narrowing down the list to a final ten. Despite the fact that the vast majority of babies were not chosen, we know that they are still bundles of joy in their own little way. As always, we thank the parents for participating, PAMPERS - distributed by Ansa McAl Guyana for the wonderful gift baskets, Duke Lodge in Kingston for the use of their facility, the media for helping us to promote the contest and last but not least the thousands of Facebook fans and followers for helping to make the contest an exciting experience. This issue is also jammed packed with many of the events that took place recently. The Inner Wheel Hatshow and Tea party, Kashif & Shanghai 25 th anniversary football tournament final, the Guyana Olympic Association Awards and lots of lifestyle features to read. Regional and national elections campaigning are in full swing, as political parties try to convince voters that they are the best team to take the country forward. This arguable is probably the most competitive elections the country have ever seen. I hope you are registered and plan to exercise your constitutional right to vote for a party of your choice. Whatever the outcome of the elections, my wish is for the next administration to be aggressive in their push to position Guyana where it ought to be in the 21st century. Please enjoy a fantastic couple of months and the Baby issue of GEM. See you around town,

financially self-sufficient. In 1997 the YouthChallenge Alliance Council was established, with four independent, autonomous partners, that work together: Australia, Canada, Costa Rica and Guyana.
Our Background Youth Challenge was founded in 1991 when a group Canadian volunteers and sponsors took the initiative to start a field project in Guyana. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) endorsed the start-up capital. For the first projects, Guyanese, Canadian and Australian volunteers (Challengers) were selected and prepared for the project by a Canadian project management team. It offered the volunteers an opportunity for personal development in global issues, leadership and problem solving through a range of diverse projects in hinterland communities. Out of these experiences grew what became known as the International Field programme.
YCG has a long history of building the confidence of young people, so that they become aware of their potential to be active members of the society. Since its establishment YCG has exposed thousands of youths in all ten administrative regions of Guyana to challenging and worthwhile community service projects, ranging from health, literacy, environmental research, community infrastructure and HIV/AIDS/STI education.
The idea of having a regional YCI office in Guyana became reality in 1993, when Youth Challenge Guyana (YCG) established its own office and own Board of Directors. By 1995 YCG succeeded to become

Health and HIV/AIDS With support fromUnited States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Global Fund Youth Challenge Guyana has workedfor many years in three different areas: Abstinence and Being Faithful(A&B), Other Prevention (OP) (like condom use) and Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT). All activities are implemented in four regions of Guyana (regions 1 and 8) targeting specific groups such asSex workers and their clients, out of school youths, and other populations in underserved communities. The professional staff of YCG is supported by a large close- knit group of youth volunteers, who are committed to Youth Challenge Guyana and passionate about making a difference in their communities. The consistent capacity building of staff and volunteers is a driving force for YCG’s success, because it provides them with credibility as a

that provides life skills to young women in region 8, in areas where life is dominated by mining. This initiative seeks to help women to be independent; the life skills training that make women aware of gender roles and their Human and sexual and reproductive rights. Life-skills and Livelihood The goal of the Life Skills & Livelihood programme is to increase employment opportunities for unemployed and atrisk youth.
Youth Challenge Guyana is working towards diversified multiple range of services, many of which can be accessed in a single visit; a team approach to care; sensitive staff who enjoy and care about youths; a “youth friendly” environment and a focus on positive youth development are internationally recognized as best practises to help at –risk adolescents who might otherwise go without treatment.
YCG’s Youth Employability initiatives aim to equip young people with the knowledge, skills and support to strengthen their employability. As part of this intervention YCGmanaged and implemented two components of the USAID/Guyana Skills and Knowledge for Youth Employment(SKYE) project that reached more than 500 youth who were empowered to acquire employment.
With support from the Caribbean Vulnerable Communities CoalitionYouth Challenge Guyana has started its Golden Girls initiative
Youth leadership and employment With financial assistance from UNDP, Youth Challenge Guyana successfully piloted an innovative youth project
The goal of the project was to enhance interactions among youth and government, civil society and the private sector by developing awareness and skills in mediation, negotiation and the peaceful transformation of conflict. The project equipped 74 young people from disadvantaged communities and different ethnic backgrounds with conflict transformation and employability skills. 65% of the trained youths were able to find employment within one month after completing the training. Many participants of the project became active members of existing YCG projects as well as volunteers in other Non-Governmental Organisations within their communities. For all of them, participating in the programme resulted in important personal development, and the building of selfconfidence and employability skills. As Facilitators and Community liaise-on the youths were able to plan and execute projects in their own communities with help from private sector companies. Through an involved community outreach approach the project was able to reach more than 1000 community members. Women’s Entrepreneurship With the financial support from Exxon Mobil 50 female entrepreneurs were equipped with the knowledge, skills and support to develop sustainable businesses. The business training, especially the modules on record keeping, costing and pricing, was extremely valuable for all the women who participated in the intervention.

Inquiry based science education The goal of this initiative was to improve the quality and delivery of Science education while rejuvenating interest in the subject area by training both teachers and students in an inquiry based method to teach and learn science at the primary level. The approach contrasts with those
where facts and processes are learned with little practise, a situation which may lead to boredom at school. The IBSE project was implemented in four schools as part of an extension of a similar project implemented by the National Centre for Education and Resource Development (NCERD). The project targets levels 5 and 6 students and provides them with important hands on experience to enable them to develop the skills used in testing ideas such as questioning, predicting, observing, interpreting, communicating, and reflecting. This creates in them an appetite to become critical thinkers at earlier ages. During the period July 1, 2013 to July 31, 2013 the project donated Science kits which comprised of laboratory equipment and resource material to four Primary Schools in the coastal zones of Guyana. Both teachers and students were trained in the use of these resources. Bi-monthly follow-up training sessions were also conducted to ensure the skills learnt at the initial training are effectively being practised in the classrooms. Following the implementation of the IBSE Project, results obtained from the schools indicated a 5.6% increase in student passes in science across the four participating schools.

GEM: Can you tell us about your family? Karen Boyle: My husband and I are the proud parents of three childrenMark Anthony, 25 a marketing consultant, Andrew Yannick- 22 a final year Psychology student considering a career in medicine and Keziah Rennee Boyle- 16, a fifth former at The Bishops High School in the science stream. Each child has a different personality and I try to give them the freedom to grow into their own person with my guidance and gentle nudging in what I feel to be the right direction.
GEM: What are some family planning techniques? KB: At GRPA, one of the primary goals is to prevent unplanned pregnancies. This is achieved through raised awareness of the various family planning options, and through increasing access to them. Family planning is best done by couples and not by an individual however, it is understood that there are times when it isn’t possible to have a couple come together and discuss what options are best for them. Different methods suit different women – there isn’t a “one size fits all” approach to family planning. For instance a
woman living in the remote interior locations would be ill advised to use a monthly injection as her method of choice. If she already has children, then an inter-uterine device such as a coil or copper T would be best for her and once inserted could be effective for up to five years, ridding her of the burden of having to travel out monthly for her family planning needs. Accessing the available counseling is the key to choosing the best family planning option for an individual or couple. If more persons took advantage of available family planning services, we would have far less need for terminations of unplanned pregnancies. I find that far too many persons seem to feel pregnancy just happens to you and isn’t something you have any control over. You do. You must start with getting the correct information. For couples who already have as many children as they feel they can comfortably provide a quality life for, a discussion on family planning is essential. For a young couple, planning for when would be the right time to start a family, how many children they can afford to take care of properly and how many years apart each child should be spaced are all very pertinent parts of family planning. In the event of an unplanned pregnancy due to the non- use or failure of family planning, counseling by trained counselors is also provided by GRPA and if after careful consideration, a couple or woman feels they must terminate, those services are made available. GRPA gives couples or women 48 hours to reconsider the decision to terminate before this is done. It would be wonderful if additional counseling
support was readily available in the community or church for women having to make this difficult decision. GRPA would be willing to refer women who indicate a desire to have such support to counselors duly trained and qualified to be a source of support. GEM: For young parents planning to have a family when is the right time? KB: When you can afford it financially, emotionally, chronologically and socially! GEM: What are some of the services offered by GRPA? KB: In addition to the family planning services and termination of pregnancy, GRPA in its effort to increase awareness of sexual and reproductive health, has a young group of volunteers “YAM” who are trained to discuss and share amongst their peers the various challenges teenagers and young people face with accepting their changing bodies and managing relationships. Parenting education and information is also available as well as a laboratory services that provides a wide range of tests from HIV, Syphilis to pregnancy and blood counts. GEM: As the president of GRPA, what are some of your duties? KB: I head a great board of directors. We have five functioning committees, each with its own work plan that is crafted to support the management and staff of GRPA and reach the organizational goals. My job is twofold: to ensure the board holds the management of GRPA accountable and to ensure that the board is strategic and effective in its support to the executive director and staff.
GEM: What are some of the ways in which they can help prepare young men and women for responsible parenthood? KB: (Mentioned above – concerning the work and focus of “YAM” GEM: Growing up was becoming a doctor your first career choice? KB: Yes, pretty much so. I considered being a lawyer for a brief period and actually started sixth form at St Roses doing subjects for law but a fortuitous encounter with a student from QC in the national Library made me realize that I missed the challenge of the sciences. So after three months at St Roses, I enrolled at the Bishops High School to prepare for a career as a medical doctor. I think I made the right move! I have now specialized in public health and spend most of my time in the field of disease prevention and health promotion. Sexual and reproductive health is my first love. GEM: What kind of advice do you offer for first time parents? KB: Well, if they are parents already the only advice to give is to love that child, spend quality time with it and provide a sound environment for learning. I would also suggest they space their children out so each can benefit fully from their attention and not be short–changed. GEM: What are some of the future plans for GRPA? KB: We plan to expand our reach providing out-reach services in all 10 regions of Guyana through partnerships with NGOs and civil society in each region, to ensure the quality of services provided to the public is of the highest quality and to raise public awareness and acceptance of the universality of sexual and reproductive rights.

Dealing with
Infant reflux WHAT IS GASTRO-ESOPHAGEALREFLUX? Gastro esophageal refers to the stomach and esophagus. Reflux means to flow back or return. Therefore, gastro esophageal reflux is the return of the stomach's contents backup into the esophagus. In normal digestion, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) opens to allow food to pass into the stomach and closes to prevent food and acidic stomach juices from flowing back into the esophagus. Gastro esophageal reflux occurs when the LES is weak or relaxes inappropriately, allowing the stomach's contents to flow up into the esophagus. Most infants occasionally spit up throughout the day. However, when regurgitation causes other problems or is associated with other symptoms, it may be due to gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD), which can also occur in older children.
(choking or gagging with feeding) * Crying with feeding or after feeding * Heartburn, gas, or abdominal pain * Slow growth Treatments for children Two-thirds of otherwise healthy infants spit up because of their physiology and they should be treated not with medication, but with modest lifestyle changes such s altering their positions during feeding. Medicine should be given only if the child is diagnosed with GERD. Lifestyle changes for infants * Elevating the head of the baby's crib or bassinet * Holding the baby upright for 30 minutes after a feeding
* Changing feeding schedules * Trying solid food (with your doctor's approval) For older children: * Elevating the head of the child's bed * Keeping the child upright for at least two hours after eating * Serving several small meals throughout the day, rather than three large meals * Limiting foods and beverages that seem to worsen your child's reflux * Encouraging your child to get regular exercise If the reflux is severe or doesn't get better, your doctor may recommend medication to treat it.
* Thickening bottle feedings with cereal (do not do this without a doctor's supervision)
Symptoms of Reflux in Infants and Children, The most common symptoms of reflux in kids are: * Frequent or recurrent vomiting * Frequent or persistent cough * Refusing to eat or difficulty eating

They plan to up the entertainment game in Guyana with not only legendary parties and concerts but also events that cater for the entire family. These youngsters, from the Pomeroon River, are not new to the entertainment business as they started out in Charity, Essequibo at the Purple Heart hotel and disco some time ago taking to Essequibo artists such as KI, Shal Marshal, Lil Rick, Father Moses, and Peter Ram among others.

The name ‘Golden Boy’ was derived from a particular feature the brothers sported as young boys while growing up. With streaks of golden strands in their hair as children they were referred to as the ‘golden boys’. The brothers launched in Georgetown on November 29, 2014 with a mega concert at the National Stadium which featured Christopher Martin, Baby Cham and Lady O, Kranium and main attraction Shaggy. Pediatrician Extraordinaire …
DR. ROHAN JABOUR

H
e is cool, well grounded and direct. It is almost impossible to miss the passion he wears like a badge for his calling, i.e. the care and treatment of babies and young children. Dr. Rohan N. Jabour is a doctor of Pediatrics operating his clinic at the St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital in Georgetown. His quiet demeanour evident at first blush masks the deeply committed service
40 | GEM 67, 2015
he gives to the hundreds of tiny patients he sees as well as their parents and guardians. Dr. Rohan is a highly qualified physician and a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics (D.A.B.P.). Armed with a sound secondary education from the still prestigious Queen’s College he went off to Glasgow, Scotland to pursue
studies for his medical degree, but that was not enough. His love for children and the vast experience he acquired from childhood as the eldest in a huge extended family of siblings and cousins is what led him in the direction of medicine. Add to that his mother’s experience as a nurse and the guidance that she unwittingly gifted to him and you will discern the strong pull he felt to pursue specialty
education in Pediatrics in Alberta, Canada and the prestigious D.A.B.P. certification. The American Pediatrics Board confirmed that “Certification is a voluntary process that goes above and beyond medical licensing requirements for practicing medicine. It is an ongoing commitment by a physician to continually expand their knowledge in a medical specialty, like pediatrics, or in a subspecialty, such as pediatric hematology/oncology. Once pediatricians are certified, they must continue to demonstrate learning through a formal Maintenance of Certification programme if they want to remain certified.” Dr. Jabour, already certified, spends most of his time away from the clinic reading volumes of papers and studies in order to stay abreast with emerging science, new bacteria and organisms that evolve and the recommended treatments, whether medicinally or lifestyle-related. “A physician specializing in Pediatrics is concerned with the physical, emotional, and social health of children from birth to young adulthood. Care encompasses a broad spectrum of health services ranging from preventive health care to the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases. The Pediatrician deals with biological, social and environmental influences on the developing child and with the impact of disease and dysfunction on development.” Wikipedia Dr. Rohan’s soft touch and his obvious caring, compassionate demeanour epitomizes these attributes required of a specialty Pediatrician. He told GEM that he spends as much time with the parent(s) of ailing children as he does on each case. The parents’ knowledge about caring for infants and toddlers is as crucial to their
health as medicine, he said. In fact, he stated that many of the ailments he confronts daily, whether respiratory or intestinal, were occasioned by the children’s living and schooling environments. He considers it his duty to inform parents of the likely social and environmental conditions and habits that cause some of the viral infections which need not be treated with strong medicines. He spends approximately a third of a consultation imparting much needed information to the adults accompanying his little patients, and very often he has to give some assurances that their children’s symptoms would disappear on their own or when certain physical conditions are improved. Of course, this applies to the cases that do not involve serious or congenital diseases. A major concern of his is that the level of literacy of Guyanese across the board is significantly lower than it was 40 years ago. The level of functional illiteracy is what causes him to use up more time imparting advisories and general information to the parents. His pet peeve is the effects of the mounds of visible, encroaching refuse that is present everywhere. He expects to have to treat patients suffering from respiratory and intestinal ailments and skin diseases caused by the abundance of bad bacteria and mosquitoes in the atmosphere. He said that he has observed a resurgence of parasitic illnesses in children including typhoid, gastroenteritis and dysentery, that old disease from centuries ago which had decimated fighting troops of soldiers on all sides during the two World Wars. Just recently a four-month old baby presented with symptoms and tests have confirmed the diagnosis. The good Doctor holds strongly to the view that every human being encounters in an average lifetime up
to 200 different viruses which our own (healthy) immune systems are equipped to deal with without the intervention of medicines. He also pointed out that all over the world, bodies are showing strong resistance to antibiotics mainly because of overuse. He has placed himself on a mission to steer parents away from the notion that administering antibiotics to children would always cure their discomfort. That is not so, he emphasised. “Antibiotics very often do more harm than good since they kill bad bacteria as well as the good bacteria the body needs to fight infections.” The viruses that cause sore throats, coughs and rashes due to colds and some fevers almost always work themselves out of the ‘system’ over relatively short periods. In his practice Dr. Rohan Jabour provides a unique admixture of medical/scientific and social services, administering to the particular needs of every person, adult and child, who enters the doorway of his clinic. He becomes almost joyful whenever he finds that a child’s symptoms are merely the result of a benign infection picked up at school or at play. He absolutely loves the sound of a baby’s laughter and chuckles. “Listen to this (sound of baby chuckling). It is the best sound in the world,” he said with a beaming smile. His reputation is one of excellent service. One visitor to his clinic observed that he spends “a very long time with everybody going in there”. This is surely an acknowledgement of his mission to address every factor, every physical, environmental or mental condition that may have contributed to the ailments presented by his tiny, cuddly patients. HOW TO EXERCISE during and after Pregnancy Text & Photography: Kezqweyah Yisrael
A
s a personal trainer for several years, I've been asked by women on numerous occasions about exercise during and after pregnancy. These questions have led to several discussions with other women and personal trainers. What I have found from these ensuing conversations is that there is wide spread ignorance on exercise during pregnancy in Guyana. In my years of talking to women about exercise during pregnancy; renowned fitness trainer Annabelle Vieira summed it up best. The great majority of women in Guyana are encouraged to walk a lot and operate from a place of fear when it comes to exercise in a gym setting. During the gestation period women have different experiences. Some are able to exercise while others experience discomfort and simply reduce their physical activities to a bare minimum. What must be noted however, is that with the growing awareness of preventative health methods more women around the world are committing to being the best they can be as it relates to their fitness and wellness. It’s widely known and accepted that women who exercise regularly usually have pregnancies with far less complications than those who do not. Women that were very active prior to conceiving were able to exercise for several months before delivery. What must be considered is the level of intensity, duration and type of fitness 44 | GEM 67, 2015
programs that they are involved in. The primary reasons for these considerations are important because of the following: 1. The developing fetus is affected by the heat (increase in body temperature) generated by vigorous physical activity. 2. Exercises that involve jumping, hanging over (where the stomach is pointing downwards), and heavy resistance training can increase the risk of complications. 3. During exercise blood supply to the developing fetus is reduced because of the need and demands by the muscles used in executing the various exercises. Therefore it's advisable that you reduce the level of intensity of your workouts along with a reduction in the length of time you train during your pregnancy. Along with the aforementioned if our regular exercise routine lasted one hour, reduce the time period to half an hour. Also make sure you exercise in well ventilated environs and that your water intake is adequate to aid in the management of your body temperature. Today with the rising rate of birth or delivery complications it’s intelligent that you take charge by committing to being in the best physical and mental state that you can be in during pregnancy.
It starts before your conception. Doing so will make your pregnancy and delivery a lot better and after this period getting in shape again will be a lot easier. Note after delivery please seek advice from your physician about the right time frame for you to restart regular fitness activity along with expert advice on what exercises and the level of intensity, duration and type of fitness program you are to be involved in. on Emphasizing Your Eyes & Lips Text: Reneé Chester-Thompson Photography: Infinity Photography “With your makeup application, you want to avoid emphasizing all features at once.” This is a major point that I always touch on when I’m teaching. It’s like I can’t say this enough. Pick one feature you would like to highlight and depending on the event just go all out on that feature. You might surprise yourself with how such a simple switch in doing your normal routine can change your whole look. While you can play up any feature on your face such as Brows, Eyes, Lips, Cheekbones, Contouring your nose, Highlighting etc… I find that the two major features that stand out most once done well, are the eyes and lips. So, let’s touch on how to make these features get the attention they deserve! USING FALSE EYELASHES Don’t let false eyelashes scare you. I absolutely love falsies. They add drama, flirt, glam and even sultriness to your overall look. They also give the illusion of bigger eyes. Every woman that’s on #TeamFlawless should learn how to apply their own false lashes. I admit, it takes a lot of patience and practice to apply them flawlessly but once you’ve mastered it, you’re well on your way to standing out and making an impression. You’ll need a pair of 100% human hair, invisible band. 46 | GEM 67, 2015
MEASURE: Check the length, trim the band to fit the length of your lash line. CUT: Make your cut where lashes are longer. Use the tip of your scissors to snip. BEND: Take both edges of the false lash and bend them to create a ‘C‘ shape for a second or two. APPLICATOR: Place lashes in eyelash applicator/tweezer. GLUE: Apply glue on the eyelash band and wait about 30 seconds. The lashes will stay in place easier if the glue is a bit tacky. Apply mascara if you think it’s necessary. It actually helps to blend your own lashes to the falsies for a seamless finish. Tip: Never pull the eyelashes off without using a remover. Use an oilbased remover. Treat your eyes with care. LIPS I have a lot to say! Women sometimes think they can get away wearing nothing on their lips, particularly during the day when going for a natural look. It’s still important to wear something on your lips, even if it’s just lip balm or a clear lip gloss. This actually helps to keep the lips
moisturized and protected. Lipstick helps a woman look more “put together” and what woman doesn’t want that? Lining the lips When lining the lips, the idea is not to create a hard line, but rather to provide some definition to the mouth. So please, please forget the black eye pencil as lip liner craziness. #Stopit It is better to go with a light touch close to your skin tone when lining to create a more natural look. When using colors, it’s best to either match your lip liner to your lipstick color or go only one shade darker than your lipstick color as a general rule. OMBRE LIPS Ombre lips is a unique technique that can make your lips look fuller and more 3D. You only need 2-3 different lip colors to create this ombre lip effect. Step 1: Outline the lips with your darker shade (I prefer a lip pencil) Step 2: Fill in the center of the lips with your lighter shade. Step 3: Merge the two colors by pressing your lips together or using a lip brush to blend. Add lipgloss if desired.
Ladies, I think this is one of the lip trends totally worth trying. EYELINER Making it effective for your style. Eyeliner creates a dramatic, glamorous effect. To achieve this you can choose to use gel, pencil or liquid eyeliner. Keep in mind that heavy eyeliner has the effect of making the eyes appear smaller. So, I don’t necessarily recommend it if you’re using false eyelashes. Make it as thin and light as possible or go without. In most cases the whole point of the eyelashes is to create open, fluttery, flirty eyes. If you decide to go with eyeliner plus lashes, be sure to draw all the way to the inner corner of the top eyelid with the liner so the liner doesn’t stop short where the eyelashes stop.
your eyes, instead of covering your eyes in a lot of heavy color.
TIP: Sometimes leaving the eyes alone works best.
That’s it for now! For both eyes and lips, there’s a whole lot of makeup techniques out there to try. Coordinate these looks to suit your features and style and you should be well on your way to always looking “put together.”
In other words, apply just concealer to your lids instead of putting on eye shadow.
Sometimes less is more!
You can always add some false eyelashes to accentuate

Women’s Health 101: Getting Prepared & What to Expect at Your Gynecological Exam Text: Coretta Corbin-Rival
K
nowing what to expect at a gynecological exam could help eliminate some of the embarrassment and discomfort you may feel. Sometimes, walking with a trusted friend or having a nurse present during your exam, especially if your doctor is male could help reduce your fears and embarrassment. In order to provide you with the best care, your doctor will need to gather information on your family, sexual and medical history. Prior to your visit, make note of all the bodily changes you have noticed so that you will be able to discuss them with your doctor. This is also the best time to talk with your doctor about the right birth control method for you, and the best way to protect yourself against sexually transmitted diseases. And please do not be afraid to ask questions. After all, it is your health and you should be the one to take the initiative to learn as much as you can about it. Gynecological exams usually involve pelvic exam, Pap smear, and breast screening. Pelvic exam looks for abnormalities in the shape of the vagina, ovaries, bladder, fallopian tube and the rectum. The doctor usually presses on your stomach and inserts two lubricated gloved fingers into the vagina to feel the size, shape and position of the uterus. Pap smear is a screening used to detect cervical cancer, abnormal cells or
54 | GEM 67, 2015
any discharge that may lead to cancer. During the exam, the doctor also looks for sexually transmitted diseases like Chlamydia, gonorrhea and HPV. Breasts exams, also called mammograms, x-ray the breasts for lumps or abnormal masses in the breasts or under arm. Breast x-rays can detect cancerous lumps at least two years before they are felt by a person. Mammogram screenings could be uncomfortable because of the coldness of the machine and the pressure that is applied to the breasts by the machine. However, the test only lasts 10 to 15 minutes. If you feel pain or discomfort during your exam, make sure to let the attending technician know. How often should pap smears and pelvic exams be done? Doctors recommend that beginning at age 21 or 3 years after becoming sexually active, all women must receive pap smears every 2 years until the age of 30. At age 30, if 3 consecutive tests are normal, screenings could be done every 3 years instead. However, if test results show abnormal cells and precancerous growths the doctor may ask you to repeat the test in a few weeks. You may also be asked to have screenings done more often. Try not to schedule your exam too close
to your menstrual cycle or this could cause false test results. As far as breasts exams, you should also do a self-breast exam on your own at the same time each month after your monthly period. This will help you become more familiar with the way your breasts normally look and feel, and make it more likely for you to notice changes. Remember that the sooner you detect abnormal lumps, thickening or irregular discharge the better chance you will have for surviving cancer. After your exams, discuss with your doctor the results and what any abnormal findings may mean for you. Do your own research to gather information on the various tests and their results. Women’s health issues and information can be found at your health clinics, local libraries and on the internet, especially since there have been a push in recent years by companies like Avon, Estee Lauder and the makers of Dove Beauty Products to promote women’s health.

a google search on Guyana in 2013 was overwhelmed by the negative way Guyana was being portrayed on the Internet. According to her all she kept seeing were stories about Jones town and politics. This led her to create a facebook page celebrating the beauty of Guyana using photos taken by her brother Ryan. Within six (6) months, the facebook page (www.facebook. com/gotoguyana) moved from five (5) to fifteen thousand (15,000) fans;
One year later in 2014, acting on feedback from fans wanting specific information, two spinoff facebook pages and websites were designed and are managed by Chris. The first (www.guyanadining.com) focuses on providing information to fans on where they can enjoy various local creole and international cuisine when in Guyana. It also contains vibrant ‘foodie’ photos, restaurant reviews and recipes for mouthwatering favourites like black cake and cheese
rolls. While the second site (www. facebook.com/guyananightlife) provides information to fans on where they can dance the night way …it lists all the hottest events and parties happening in Guyana. The Visit Guyana Website and Facebook page won the Ministry of Tourism Award for Destination Guyana promotion in 2013. The team also released their first Guyana video in 2014 which can be found on Youtube here: www.youtube.com/ watch?v=OSYnRAKTuUc The Future in their own words: “…Our vision is to release videos each month, giving overseas based Guyanese and potential visitors a glimpse of what make Guyana special, from festivals like Phagwah and Mashramani to our Mountains and waterfalls. We are also close to completing our Visit Guyana mobile app, which will be released next month and we are also planning a Visit Guyana Magazine. Our main objective remains the same; it is to continue to share the magnificent beauty of Guyana, land of Many waters. A country unlike any place you will ever visit. To us it is home, to you welcomed visitor; its beauty will leave you breathless. We invite you to make cassava bread with our Indigenous peoples, eat seven curry with your fingers, dance under the stars in the Vast Rupununi Savannahs or go bird watching 100 feet above the rainforest floor... there is so much to do, see, taste, enjoy and most of all discover in destination Guyana, where adventure awaits.
