CARS Plus Annual Conference February 18, 2011 The Current State of Response to Intervention 2011 Dr. Tom Green, Director of School Transformation Alum Rock School District Recommended by federal law and the California Department of Education, it is assumed that local school districts are implementing Response to Intervention. Although the model is strongly supported by educational research on best practices, effective implementation of any service delivery model in public education is dependent upon the ability of the local school district to understand it and reallocate its resources. Because each state is legally responsible for implementation, because RtI is recommended rather than mandated, and because in California each district is independently responsible for implementation, RtI looks different in every district. This double session is your opportunity to analyze RtI in your district, identify concerns, and learn about factors contributing to successful implementation across the state and nation. Dr. Tom Green is the Director of School Transformation for the Alum Rock School District in east San Jose. He was a recent finalist for state Director of Special Education. He has implemented Response to Intervention as a Resource Specialist, site principal, and district administrator. His doctoral dissertation for UC Berkeley studied the ability of school districts to reorganize to effectively provide coordinated services for below grade level students. He trains administrators across the state in best practices in providing coordinated support and intervention for below grade level students, focusing on Response to Intervention.
