MASTER PLANNING The Master Plan is developed to provide an adaptable and implementable guide for future campus growth. It identifies opportunities of a campus (rural, suburban, or urban) and considers how an institution can develop a cohesive identity. We work with institutions to set priorities, explore phasing approaches, and develop implementation plans. Our firm’s extensive planning and landscape architecture services enhance our expertise with this type of work.

NEW FACILITIES At the outset of all new facilities projects we first try to understand how a new building can reinforce or enhance it's immediate surroundings and the campus master plan. We work closely with the client to create an appropriate architectural expression given the institutional and physical context. We seek to create dynamic, memorable places using a palette of materials and building skins that perform and age beautifully.

RENOVATIONS We begin each renovation project with a full building survey to ensure our team fully understands the existing facility. The renovation scope is then developed to ensure the budget is met, the functional program is accommodated, and new and existing architectural features and systems are incorporated. We are particularly adept in transforming “Brutalist” architecture of the 1960’s and 1970’s to improve comfort while incorporating iconic architectural elements.

ADDITIONS
2
Depending on the building and the client, additions may blend seamlessly with an existing facility or they will redefine a place. Context informs the material choices and character of an addition to reinforce the goal of the client while providing the functional needs of the project. Our addition solutions include: linking, connecting, and extending buildings and we work closely with the client to ensure that the addition is phased and constructed in a way that works with the continued use of the existing facility.

ADAPTIVE REUSE The best adaptive reuse designs celebrate rugged construction and delights in the contrast between old and new. We work to preserve elements which can help to “tell the story of the former use of the building while being an integral part of the new program. We develop detailed documentation to indicate which items are salvaged, protected in place, and recycled. We also have extensive successful experience developing realistic budgets and cost estimates for this complex construction type.

LABORATORIES Our lab space experience includes a multitude of lab types including: bio-medical, electrical, structural, mechanical, traditional biology and chemistry labs and extends to specialized materials testing labs, medical simulation labs, and computer labs. The spaces include durable finishes, modular casework and millwork, adjustable specialty lighting, and natural daylight and views whenever possible. We work directly with researchers to customize the lab space to the specific needs of the researchers. We also endeavor to provide spare utility capacity to accommodate future growth and expansion of facilities.

STUDENT LIFE Our work with student life facilities includes student commons, cafĂŠs and dining facilities, student lounges, and student dormitories and apartments. We work with each institution to develop an approach tailored specifically for the project. We often develop multiple finish and furniture options for students and staff to test and even vote on prior to the final selection. Multiple furniture types are developed to provide many seating options as appropriate for each space.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES Athletic facility design includes practice facilities, event spaces, and support spaces which are vital to the success of the athletic program. acoustics, lighting, durability of finishes, and robust mechanical systems must be coordinated to provide spaces for athletes to excel and for institutions to grow. We work closely to enhance, expand, and reinforce the “branding of the athletics program so that the facilities are integrated into a cohesive whole.

PERFORMING ARTS Clarke Caton Hintz has worked closely with performing arts clients to develop visually and acoustically superior spaces. We understand the need to provide a dramatic aesthetic and balance that with the need for maximized seating, excellent sightlines, and appropriate acoustics. In addition to new facilities, we are adept in renovating performing arts spaces to breathe new life into legacy buildings and historic facilities.
“These renovations return the Nicholas Music Center to its original glorious state. It puts Rutgers at the forefront of the arts, where it belongs. Dean George B. Stauffer, Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University

PARKING GARAGE AND RAIL STATION | Montclair State University Montclair, NJ
PARKING FACILITIES Parking facilities are often one of the first designs that are encountered at an institution by guests, prospective students, and faculty. The design of these facilities can help to reinforce a campus identity and develop an architectural language which is consistent with the campus. The design of these facilities impact the first impressions of a university and have tremendous impact as “the gateway onto campus. Clarke Caton Hintz has extensive experience incorporating these types of facilities into a campus, into adjacent buildings, and even submerged under public spaces and facilities.
