GAME NOTES

OPENING TIP

The St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team opens the 2024-25 season by welcoming Big West members CSUN (Cal State Northridge) on Monday night inside The RC. It will be the first-ever meeting between the Bonnies and Matadors who travel coast-to-coast from California for the season-opener of both teams. The two programs combined for 39 wins last year as the Bonnies won 20 games and reached the Atlantic 10 semifinals while CSUN posted a 19-15 overall record a season ago.

HOME SWEET HOME

• Since the Reilly Center opened in 1966, the Bonnies are 52-5 overall in home openers.

• St. Bonaventure has won its last three openers, defeating Longwood, Saint Francis (PA) and Siena at the Reilly Center to begin the past three seasons respectively. Those wins snapped what was a three-year skid in season lid lifters, all at home. Prior to that, however, the Bonnies had won 12 straight home openers between 2004 and 2016.

TRENDING NUMBERS

• 12-5 – The Bonnies are 12-5 in season-openers under head coach Mark Schmidt.

• 7 – Bona’s transfers have experience in seven different Division I conferences prior to this season: Big Ten, SEC, Missouri Valley, Big Sky, Mountain West, WAC and NEC.

• 9 – SBU has scored double-digit Atlantic 10 victories nine times since Mark Schmidt took over the program in 2007-08. Since that time, only Dayton and VCU have accomplished that feat more (10 times each).

• 10 – St. Bonaventure has 10 newcomers on the roster this season. Seven joined the program via the transfer portal.

• 18 – The Bonnies have averaged 18 wins per season during the Mark Schmidt Era.

• 71% - Of their three returning players, senior Noel Brown had by far the most statistical production for the Bonnies last year. He connected on over 71 percent of his field goal attempts while averaging over six points per contest in his first year with the program.

• 75% - Bona’s has won over 75 percent of its home games over the past decade. St. Bonaventure is 107-35 at The RC since 2014-15, good for the fourth-best winning percentage in the Atlantic 10 over that span (.754).

TEAM CAPTAINS

St. Bonaventure has selected Noel Brown and senior transfer Melvin Council Jr. as its team captains for this season. The captains were voted upon by their teammates following the conclusion of summer training.

BONNIES VS. BIG WEST

The Bonnies have technically never played a Big West opponent – at least not while that school was a current member of the BWC. St. Bonaventure is 4-1 all-time against current Big West members, playing just five contests against the league which currently boasts 11 members. The last time St. Bonaventure played a Big West squad was 1998-99 when the Bonnies defeated Hawaii, 78-69, in Honolulu, however, Hawaii was not a Big West member at that time. St. Bonaventure is also 1-0 against Santa Barbara (a 1966 meeting) and 1-0 against Pacific (a 1968 meeting). The Big West was not founded until July 1, 1969. Today, 10 of its 11 members are California schools with the lone outlier being Hawaii.

ABOUT CSUN

• CSUN was selected to finish sixth in the Big West preseason coaches’ poll, 10 points behind fifth-place UC Davis. UC Irvine was selected as the league’s preseason favorite.

• The Matadors finished last season with a 19-15 record, going 9-11 in conference play.

• CSUN went into last year’s conference tournament as a seven seed. After an overtime win in their first-round matchup against UC Santa Barbara, the Matadors fell in the second round to Hawaii.

• Keonte Jones, the team’s No. 3 scorer last year, returns for his senior year at CSUN. He averaged 11.4 points and 6.9 rebounds in 31 starts last season. He led the Big West in blocks per game (1.5). Jones was CSUN’s lone preseason Big West Preseason AllConference honoree.

• The Matadors bring in 15 newcomers for the ‘24-25 season, including nine transfers and six freshmen. Seven of the nine transfers come from Division I schools.

• CSUN is led by head coach Andy Newman who is in his second season. He led the team to an impressive turnaround in his first year, leading the Matadors to an increase from seven wins in 2022-23 to 19 victories last season.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

The GoBonnies.com Student-Athletes of the Week are women's tennis junior Tamara Bachmann and golf freshman Braddock Damore.

Bachmann picked up a doubles victory with teammate Isabella Venter at the Atlantic 10 Masters at Davidson last Friday.

The duo opened their tournament with an 8-4 victory over the team of Gisele Tang and Victoria Tracey from Saint Joseph's.

Venter and Bachmann battled the top-seeded Kavya Patel and Daniela Porges from Davidson in the next round, but fell 8-7, ending their run.

The pair of juniors concluded their fall with a 10-3 record in doubles action. Bachmann also scored three singles wins.

Damore carded a career-best round of 2-under 69 at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate held at Kilmarlic Golf Club.

The Warren, Pa. native shined in the final round last Tuesday as he birdied two par-4s in the first three holes before playing the next three holes in 3-over to move out of red figures. He got things going again with two more birdies on par-4s before making par and then sinking another bird on the par-5 ninth to go out in 33. Two more birdies came on back nine par-5s before draining his eighth and final birdie on the par-3 17th.

He opened the three-day tournament with 1-over 72 followed by 77 in the second round. He posted a 54-hole total of 218 to tie for 25th in the field of 72 players.

Damore posted a strong fall season, earning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors Oct. 14.

The Bonnies are now off until the spring, when they return to official competition March 10-11 at the Ross Collegiate Classic at Mid-Pines Golf Club in North Carolina.
