GAME NOTES

OPENING TIP

The St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team returns home to the Reilly Center to play host to Le Moyne Saturday afternoon. After opening the new season Nov. 4 with a convincing win over CSUN on home court, the Bonnies have since recorded back-toback road victories, first at rival Canisius last Saturday before traveling to southwest Florida for another win at Florida Gulf Coast Wednesday night.

HOT START

St. Bonaventure has its first 3-0 start since the 2021-22 campaign and fourth since 2000. The last time the Bonnies opened 3-0 three seasons ago, the team won 23 games and reached the NIT Final Four. Bona’s started the season 5-0 that year and reached No. 16 in the national rankings. Prior to 2021-22, the previous 4-0 open to a campaign for the Bonnies came in 1992-93.

IN THE EMPIRE STATE

The Bonnies add another Empire State foe to the schedule this year, playing Le Moyne for the first time since 2009. All-time, the Bonnies are 346-253 against teams from New York State. There are 22 New York schools currently playing at the Division I level and the Bonnies have played them all except one - there has never been an SBU vs. SBU matchup as the Bonnies have never played Stony Brook.

Among all New York Division I men’s basketball programs since the start of the 201011 season, only two have a better overall winning percentage than St. Bonaventure’s .604: Syracuse (.653) and Iona (.639).

TRENDING NUMBERS

• 3 – Dasonte Bowen has posted double-figure scoring in each of the season’s first three games. He played his first 51 career games at Iowa the last two years and had never previously scored double digits in consecutive contests, though he recorded seven total double-figure efforts for the Hawkeyes.

• 5 – Dasonte Bowen matched his career high with five assists in Wednesday’s win at FGCU.

• 6 – Melvin Council handed out a team-high six assists at FGCU and Lajae Jones’ six rebounds Wednesday represent a new Division I career-best for the junior.

• 7 – Bona’s transfers have experience in seven different Division I conferences prior to this season: Big Ten, SEC, Missouri Valley, Big Sky, Mountain West, WAC and NEC.

• 8 – New NCAA uniform number rules instituted last year allow players to wear any numbers from 0-99. This year, for the first time ever, a Bonnies player has number 8. Jonah Hinton becomes the first Bona’s player to ever don 8.

• 32 – Graduate Noel Brown has set new career highs for minutes in each of the last two games, playing 29 minutes last Saturday at Canisius before logging 32 at FGCU. Those totals come in his 103rd and 104th career games respectively.

ABOUT LE MOYNE

• The Dolphins are looking for their second win of the season. Le Moyne opened its campaign with two losses and most recently lost to No.3 UConn on Wednesday, 90-49. Le Moyne’s only win of the season came against SUNY Poly (107-73).

• Le Moyne lost to Syracuse, 86-82, in the season-opener, but trailed by just one point with 23 seconds remaining. The Dolphins led at halftime and had five

players score in double figures at the Dome in Syracuse: Freds Pauls Bagatskis (18 points), Will Amica (12), Nate Fouts (11), Zek Tekin (10) and Dwayne Koroma (10).

• St. Bonaventure and Le Moyne share one common opponent: Le Moyne lost 97-75 to CSUN in its home opener while the Bonnies defeated CSUN two days prior at the Reilly Center, 70-56.

• The Dolphins struggled on the road last season, going 5-14 and enter 0-2 as the visitors this season.

• Le Moyne’s move to Division I last year was a tale of two halves. The Dolphins started the season 4-8 before finishing the year with wins in 11 of their final 20 games. The Dolphins owned a 9-7 Northeast Conference record while they were just 6-10 out-of-conference.

• Six players return from last season’s squad including fifth-year guard Darrick Jones Jr. Jones was the highest returning scorer on this year’s roster (8.5 ppg) and has averaged 5.0 points per contest through four games this year. Thus far in the new season, four Dolphins average in double-figure scoring: Koroma (11.5 ppg), Tekin (11.0 ppg), Amica (11.7 ppg) and Bagatskis (10.3 rpg).

• The Dolphins have struggled on the glass as their opponents have averaged 6.8 more rebounds per game.

• Le Moyne was picked to finish fourth in the NEC Preseason Poll

GIVEN THE CHANCE

Bonnies senior guard Chance Moore shined in the opening week of the season, earning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honors. He averaged 22.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in two victories. In the opener vs. CSUN, he led all scorers with 18 points to go along with nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. At Canisius, he dominated with 27 points and six boards along with three blocks including a key swat late to thwart a Canisius rally effort. He stayed hot Wednesday at FGCU with a game-high 18 points along with eight rebounds and three steals. Through three games, Moore ranks third among all Atlantic 10 players in scoring at 21.0 ppg, behind only Gibson Jimerson of Saint Louis (22.0 ppg) and Jackie Johnson III of Fordham (21.3 ppg). A year ago with Missouri State, he tallied double-figure scoring 15 times with the Bears.

GREAT EIGHT

Bona's No. 8, Jonah Hinton, recorded his first career Division I game of double-figure scoring in Bona's win at Canisius Nov. 9. He delivered 10 points in 22 minutes off the bench and provided a spark from long range as he sank a pair of 3-point tries. He followed that up with 11 points off the bench on 3-of-4 three-point shooting at FGCU.

Hinton proved his 3-point shooting ability last season at Panola College, a junior college in Texas, where he shot nearly 40 percent beyond the 3-point arc. He sank 85 treys last year, going 85-214 from distance. Hinton scored in double figures 25 times last year at Panola, including a season-best of 32 points in one game.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Pettinelli tallied 14 points to go along with six rebounds and six assists in a team-high 35 minutes in her collegiate debut, helping the Bonnies to an 82-61 win over Binghamton Saturday afternoon.

Pettinelli finished the contest shooting 83.3 percent (5-for-6) from the field and 80.0 percent (4-for-5) from behind the arc. The freshman also added two steals on the defensive end. A native of Collegeville, Pa., her 14 points were the most by a Bonnies freshman in their collegiate debut since Asianae Johnson scored 13 points against Niagara in the 2018-19 season opener.

Moore was outstanding in his first week as a Bonnie, helping the men's basketball team to a pair of victories.

The Brookhaven, Ga. native averaged 22.5 points and 7.5 rebounds while shooting 58 percent from the floor. He drained 27 points in a win at rival Canisius and also had three blocks and six rebounds on Saturday. In the opener vs. CSUN last Monday, he tallied a game-high 18 points along with nine boards, three assists and two steals.
