TEAM STATISTICS

GAME NOTES

OPENING TIP

St. Bonaventure brings a four-game winning streak into the new week, readying for the second game of a three-game homestand by entertaining Mansfield Wednesday night at the Reilly Center. The Bonnies have scored two road wins at Canisius and Florida Gulf Coast while defending home court against Cal State Northridge and Le Moyne.

HOT START

The Bonnies are off to one of their best starts in recent memory with their first 4-0 opening to a campaign since 2021. Bona’s +12.8 margin of victory is its best start through four games since 1992-93 when the Bonnies began the year 5-0 with a +23.7 margin of victory in its first four contests. SBU also started 5-0 three seasons ago, ultimately winning 23 games and reaching the NIT Final Four.

A win Wednesday would give the Bonnies just their third 5-0 start since 1990.

SPREADING THE WEALTH

The Bonnies have proven their depth in their four-game winning streak as four players have averaged over 11 points per game so far: Chance Moore (17.3 ppg), Noel Brown (11.5), Melvin Council Jr. (11.5) and Dasonte Bowen (11.3 ppg) while a fifth starter, Lajae Jones, checks in at 9.5 ppg.

Entering last Saturday’s win vs. Le Moyne, Moore had been the team’s leading scorer in each of the first three games while posting over 21 ppg. Moore was the only starter to not log double figures in Saturday’s win, but the Bonnies still never trailed in the win.

ON A ROLL

Two Bonnies veterans are on the best scoring streaks of their collegiate careers.

Dasonte Bowen has scored in double figures in all four games so far, the first time he has achieved that feat in four consecutive games. In two seasons at Iowa, he scored in double figures seven times and also produced a 3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio as a sophomore last year.

Noel Brown, meanwhile, has double figures in three straight games for the first time in his career. He first logged back-to-back games of double-figure scoring in last year’s Atlantic 10 Tournament, doing so in wins over La Salle and Loyola Chicago.

Brown was named to this week’s Atlantic 10 Weekly Honor Roll after scoring 13 points in a win at FGCU followed by a team-best 15 tallies in Saturday’s victory. He made good on over 70 percent of his field goal tries during the week.

WIRE-TO-WIRE

St. Bonaventure never trailed in its win over Le Moyne last time out, continuing a trend of controlling its first four contests. The Bonnies have led for at least 32:31 in each game thus far and over 35 minutes in three of their four victories.

CAPTAIN EFFICIENCY

Grad captain Noel Brown continues his high efficiency shooting rate with a strong start to this season. Last year, he made good on 71 percent of his field goal attempts (76-107) which was just shy of making Bonnies history. The all-time program record for field goal percentage in a season is held by Osun Osunniyi who connected on 61.5 percent of field goal tries during the

2019-20 season. Brown was a little short of making the minimum field goals per game of 2.5, however, as he recorded just over 2.3 made FGs on average in 2023-24.

Thus far this season, he’s making just under 68 percent of his tries from the floor and checks in at 70.4 percent for his Bonaventure career in 37 games with the Bonnies.

IMPRESSIVE RESUMES

Multiple new Bonnies bring impressive resumes with them to Western New York including a trio who boast postseason accolades at the collegiate level.

Senior Melvin Council Jr. was a standout at Wagner last year, helping lead that program to the NCAA Tournament. He was named 2024 First Team AllNEC following the season. Prior to that, he starred at Monroe College where he was selected as a 2022 NJCAA Division I First Time Honorable Mention All-America as a freshman. Following his sophomore season at Monroe, he was celebrated as a 2023 NJCAA Division I First Team All-American.

Lajae Jones also was a star at the JUCO level last year, taking 2024 NJCAA Division I National Championship MVP honors as he led Barton (KS) College to the national title. He was also picked to the NJCAA Division I Second Team All-America squad.

Chance Moore was a standout at Missouri State the past two years. In 2023, he was selected to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Bench Team after serving as Missouri State’s sixth man.

ABOUT MANSFIELD

• The Mansfield Mountaineers showcase two transfers from Division 1 programs: guards Artemios Gavalas from Butler University and LJ Stansbury from Delaware State.

• Head coach John Szentesy returns for his seventh year with the program.

• The Mountaineers return five players from last year’s squad, a team which collected the most wins for the program since the 2016-17 season and snuck in as the final playoff team in the PSAC East.

• Through four games, Stansbury leads the team in minutes played (131), points (52), and assists (15). He is tied with Scott Sterling and Julian Wilson for the team lead in rebounds (18), and level with Sterling again in steals (6).

• Scott Woodring (.552), Julian Wilson (.563), and Diarmid Stewart (.500) have been shooting efficient percentages from the field through the early stretch of the season.

SERIES HISTORY

The Bonnies are 5-1 all-time in regular season games against Mansfield. The last regular season meeting was in 1947 when the Mountaineers scored their only win in the series, 71-54. The schools met six times between 1940-47. More recently, the two schools played an exhibition game every year between 2009 and 2015 with the Bonnies winning each year.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Winters brought home a time of 22:32.0 on the 6K course layout to place 157th out of 272 competitors from around the region representing 40 colleges and universities at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships held Friday in New Hampshire.

The Brooklyn, N.Y. native led the Bonnies in each of the last four meets this season, logging the second-fastest individual 6K time in school history earlier in the year.

Brown, meanwhile, has scored in double figures in three straight games for the first time in his career. The Virginia native was named to this week’s Atlantic

10 Weekly Honor Roll after scoring 13 points in a win at FGCU followed by a team-best 15 tallies in Saturday’s victory. He made good on over 70 percent of his field goal tries during the week while helping the Bonnies improve to 4-0 on the season.

BEHIND THE BONNIES

Welcome to "Behind The Bonnies," a new GoBonnies.com series where we get to know the studentathletes at St. Bonaventure University. In this edition, we meet Bonnies sophomore Jack DeRose.

Jack DeRose is perhaps more familiar with Bonnies Basketball than anyone else on the active roster as he grew up in Olean and was a star for Olean High during his high school career.

Now he has a unique opportunity to play for his hometown team and is in his second season after walking on to the program last year.

While at Olean High, he was a First Team All-League all-star as both a junior and a senior, averaging 16 points per game. He earned Big 30 First Team honors and helped OHS to a 2022 sectional title. While with the Huskies, he scored a career-high 41 points in a game and also set the school record for 3-pointers in a single game when he drained 12. He also played football, golf and ran cross country/track.

Last year, he saw action in five games during his collegiate debut.
