GAME NOTES
OPENING TIP
St. Bonaventure wraps up a three-game homestand Sunday afternoon by hosting Bryant at the Reilly Center. The Bonnies are on a five-game winning streak after opening the year with a win at home over Cal State Northridge before traveling for two road victories at Canisius and FGCU. During the homestand so far, the Bonnies have scored triumphs over Le Moyne and Mansfield to remain perfect on home court.
HOT START
St. Bonaventure has just its third 5-0 start since 1990, last doing so three years ago when the Bonnies reached No. 16 in the national rankings and ultimately won 23 games, reaching the NIT semifinals. Prior to that, Bona’s last 5-0 open came in 199293.
A win Sunday would give the Bonnies their first 6-0 start since 1973-74. The best starts in program history: the 1970-71 team began the campaign 8-0 on the way to a 21-6 record and a spot in the NIT. The 1969-70 Final Four group started the year 12-0. In 1967-68, the Bonnies were undefeated during the regular season, 22-0, and stretched that to 23-0 with a first round NCAA Tournament victory.
WIRE-TO-WIRE
The Bonnies continued a trend to begin the season when they led for all but 28 seconds in Wednesday’s win over Mansfield. The Bonnies have led for at least 32:31 in each game thus far and over 35 minutes in four of their five victories.
STRENGTH ON THE GLASS
Bonnies senior Chance Moore not only leads the team in rebounding, he’s one of the top Atlantic 10 players on the boards thus far. Through the first five games of the season, he’s logging 8.6 rebounds per game – that total ranks fifth among all A-10 players and tops among all guards in the league.
Already named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week in the opening week of the season, Moore is among the top 10 scorers in the league thus far as well by averaging 17.0 ppg.
CAPTAIN EFFICIENCY
Grad captain Noel Brown continues his high efficiency shooting rate with a strong start to this season. Last year, he made good on 71 percent of his field goal attempts (76-107) which was just shy of making Bonnies history. The all-time program record for field goal percentage in a season is held by Osun Osunniyi who connected on 61.5 percent of field goal tries during the 2019-20 season. Brown was a little short of making the minimum field goals per game of 2.5, however, as he recorded just over 2.3 made FGs on average in 2023-24.
Thus far this season, he's making just under 67 percent of his tries from the floor and checks in at exactly 70 percent for his Bonaventure career in 38 games with the Bonnies.
TRENDING NUMBERS
• 1 – Senior Chance Moore turned in his first double-double with the Bonnies on Wednesday as he finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds in the victory. Overall, it was his fourth career double-double as he had three in the past two seasons while at Missouri State.
• 2 – Freshman big man Xander Wedlow recorded his first career points in Wednesday’s win with a bucket during the second half.

• 3 – Sophomore Miles Rose drained his first career three-pointer Wednesday vs. Mansfield. The second-year Bonnie saw his first minutes of the season and recorded a career-high five points off the bench.
• 8 – Junior point guard Dasonte Bowen handed out a career-high eight assists in Wednesday’s win over Mansfield. Bowen is currently averaging 4.4 assists per game in his first season with the Bonnies. The Iowa transfer owns a 2.8 assistto-turnover ratio. As a sophomore with the Hawkeyes last year, he recorded a 3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio with 49 assists against 16 turnovers in 25 contests. Bowen was fresh off recording a career-best on the boards in the previous game vs. Le Moyne when he hauled in six rebounds.
• 58.1% - The Bonnies are shooting 58.1 percent on all 2-point field goal tries this season, ranking 58th nationally. The Bonnies are still looking to find their footing beyond the arc, though, averaging 29.5 percent from deep.
• +74 – St. Bonaventure has had power in the paint so far: Bona’s is +74 in paint , scoring though five games and has held a plus paint margin in all five contests.
ABOUT BRYANT
• Bryant is 3-2 to open the season, securing wins over Dean (D-III), Buffalo, and Delaware.
• The Bulldogs have already played multiple nailbiters, falling on either side of thrillers. Bryant started the week with a thrilling win at Delaware, 85-84, before suffering a heartbreaker Thursday night at Stonehill, 67-66. It wasn’t the first heartbreak of the young season for the Bulldogs – they also suffered a 90-88 loss to Siena Nov. 8 at home.
• Bryant has a familiar face on the bench in assistant coach Nick Schmidt, son of Bonnies head coach Mark Schmidt. Nick joined the Bulldogs staff in June 2024 after spending time as the head coach of the varsity team at Putnam Science Academy. He was also an assistant with the prep squad at PSA, helping the school to a national title in 2022. Nick also served as a graduate assistant for the SBU basketball team prior to his time at PSA. As a collegiate player at Alfred State, he averaged 7.5 ppg over 98 career games. He played high school ball at Olean High School, helping the Huskies to three straight Section VI titles and trips to the Class B state final four in 2012 and 2014 as part of a 1,000-point career.
• Bulldogs head coach Phil Martelli Jr. has been on the staff since 2018, assuming the role of head coach in Nov. 2023. Martelli Jr. is the son of longtime Saint Joseph’s coach Phil Martelli Sr. He was previously an assistant on staff at Niagara from 2006-11 and spent time as an assistant at Central Connecticut, Manhattan, Delaware and Bryant before taking over as Bulldogs head coach last year.
• Senior Rafael Pinzon has led the Bulldogs in minutes (34.5) and points (19.5) to begin the year. Pinzon poured in 33 in an overtime loss to Siena and 13 in a win over Delaware. Pinzon started his career with St. John’s before transferring to Bryant for the 2023-24 season.
• After spending his first two seasons at St. Bonaventure, junior Barry Evans transferred to Bryant for the 2024-25 season. Evans has averaged 13 points per game in the first five contests of the year.
• The Bulldogs were selected third in the America East preseason coaches poll behind Vermont and UMass Lowell.
• Senior guard Earl Timberlake was named to the preseason All-Conference Team. He was a 2023-24 America East First Team All-Conference selection after averaging 14.6 points, 9 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game last season.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Winters brought home a time of 22:32.0 on the 6K course layout to place 157th out of 272 competitors from around the region representing 40 colleges and universities at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships held Friday in New Hampshire.
The Brooklyn, N.Y. native led the Bonnies in each of the last four meets this season, logging the second-fastest individual 6K time in school history earlier in the year.
Brown, meanwhile, has scored in double figures in three straight games for the first time in his career. The Virginia native was named to this week’s Atlantic
10 Weekly Honor Roll after scoring 13 points in a win at FGCU followed by a team-best 15 tallies in Saturday’s victory. He made good on over 70 percent of his field goal tries during the week while helping the Bonnies improve to 4-0 on the season.
